A Reno bakery is expanding to Tennessee with two new locations and another planned at home
which operates multiple businesses in Reno
will open a location in Franklin on May 24 and another in Nashville this summer
a grocery store and a sister restaurant — Claio Rotisserie — in Reno
who runs the business with her husband Tyler
said they were itching to do more without jeopardizing the success of their existing locations
"We've been planning this for a little over a year," O'Laskey told the RGJ
taking a short break from stocking planters with flowers at the upcoming Franklin location
"Watching all those little details that we've been working and planning on..
I'm literally bursting with excitement right now."
The Franklin location will combine Claio Rotisserie’s concept with that of the Rancharrah location — bringing the bakery
What inspired the move to Tennessee? The O'Laskeys had been considering an out-of-state expansion for a few months when a longtime customer encouraged them to check out Franklin in late 2023
"It's the literal set of a Hallmark movie," she said
"It is so quaint and it's the quintessential small town
But the historic Boat House location required extensive renovations
so the pair decided it would be best to live in Franklin during the build-out and opening process
Franklin also offers excellent public schools and a friendly atmosphere
Perenn's Franklin location is set to open at 94 E
Its Nashville location is planned for 2934 Sidco Road and is expected to open in the summer of 2025
But what about Reno? A new location is coming to the Biggest Little City and will be announced on Perenn's social media and website soon

the Aces were walked off in the bottom half of the inning

Amarillo scored five runs in the top of the seventh to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead
a fielding error opened the floodgates as the first six Sod Poodles reached base

Hillsboro's bullpen made that one-run lead stand
Alexis Liebano retired two of three hitters before giving way to Carlos Rey
including three on strikes to send the game to the ninth
Philip Abner picked up his third save with a tidy ninth inning
with a 13/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 11 innings

He pitched out of a major jam in the third inning
in which Fresno had runners at second and third with no outs
A strikeout and a double play allowed him to escape
Slade Caldwell reached base in four of five trips to the plate
His only out was a sacrifice fly that put Visalia on the board in the fourth
He also had his family in the stands on Sunday
who has guided him with sage advice throughout his development
.@VisaliaRawhide's Slade Caldwell wears a tattoo his grandfather gave him: "See the ball, hit the ball."His family flew in from Arkansas to watch the Diamondbacks' #3 prospect go 3-for-3 with a walk & 2 RBI.Feature story on Slade coming tonight at 10:45 on @KMPHFOX26. pic.twitter.com/nehR0dG9ku
Braden Quinn pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first professional win
Left-handers Rocco Reid and Jake Fitzgibbons closed out the game with three scoreless innings

If you're seeking a new style with a new cut - you're in luck
you will need a REAL ID or identification with a federal security equivalent (such as a passport) to efficiently get through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at the airport
Going through the process of getting a REAL ID — which requires visiting your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office
providing one document proving your identity (more if you've changed your name)
a document proving your Social Security number and two documents proving your Nevada residential address — can take multiple hours and significant effort
So Nevadans may be wondering: will I have to go through this every time I need to renew my REAL ID
Here's your guide to renewing your REAL ID
most residents will not need to show documents when renewing their REAL ID
permanent residents and limited term residents are required to show their immigration documents at each renewal
date of birth or Social Security number will require documentation at renewal
What is the deadline for REAL ID to fly?May 7
state-issued driver's license or ID card that meets minimum security standards
It's the same card as your driver's license or state ID
The visible difference is a gold circle or Nevada shape with a clear star in the center
How do I get a REAL ID?You can get a REAL ID by visiting a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office
You will need to bring one document proving your identity
a document proving your Social Security number and two documents proving your residential address
Though standard driver’s licenses and state IDs will no longer be accepted by TSA as identification
travelers can also use an unexpired passport to fly domestically starting May 7
because it meets federal security requirements
Can a REAL ID be used as a passport?Though a passport can be used to fly domestically in place of a REAL ID because it meets federal security requirements
the two are not completely interchangeable
You still need a passport if you plan to fly internationally
Documents that will be accepted by the DMV as proof of identity include:
Licenses and ID cards will be marked “LIMITED TERM" when immigration documents are used to prove identity
The following documents can be used as proof of your Social Security number as long as it has your full name and number on it
A Social Security cardW-2 formIRS Form 1099A printed pay stub with your Social Security numberWhat documents can I use to prove my residence? You can use a variety of documents to prove your address including:
For a complete list of proof of residency documents, you can visit DMV's website.
You only need to bring documentation of your name change if the name on your identification documents do not match your current name
Documents accepted as proof of a name change include:
Birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates can all be reordered through the state. For a complete list of offices you can visit for these certificates, visit the CDC's website.
you need an official government-issued birth certificate to apply for a REAL ID
A hospital-issued birth certificate will not suffice as proof of identity for a REAL ID
You can tell if your birth certificate is government-issued if it is embossed and has the signature of a state official at the bottom
If you’d like to order any of these certificates online, you can do so at vitalchek.com/v/
You can order a replacement Social Security card through the Social Security Administration's website.
Your REAL ID should arrive within 10 days of your completed DMV appointment
REAL ID is only required to enter secure federal facilities
board commercial aircraft and access nuclear power plants
You do not need a REAL ID for the following:
and then select your city and choose a time on the calendar that works for you
A REAL ID costs the same as a change-of-information fee
$7.25 for an ID card or $12.25 for a commercial license
If you are updating other information to your driver’s license or ID
these changes may be included at no additional cost
There is also no additional charge for a REAL ID if you are completing another license or ID transaction
such as a renewal or adding an endorsement
You can visit the DHS website or the Nevada DMV website for more information about REAL ID

He said losing two games after starting league play 11-0 helped motivate the Miners
Manogue coach Charles Oppio said losing twice — to Reed and then Reno — just proves that most of the teams in the league can beat each other
"Reed had a good game and beat us and the Reno game is always tight," Oppio said
"I'm just proud of my pitchers the last few games
He said the pitching has come on strong after the Miners' offense hit a slow patch in the past couple weeks

Nevada’s Legislature has authorized cities and counties to use redevelopment under Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 279 to revitalize communities statewide
a mechanism that reinvests additional property tax revenue generated by new development back into the project area
has spurred private investment and transformed blighted areas into vibrant economic hubs
From Sparks’ Victorian Avenue and Marina to downtown Minden
and expanded tax bases through increased sales
The Reno Redevelopment Agency has been a cornerstone of progress in the Biggest Little City since 1983
and the Meruelo Group’s proposed expansion and arena project at the Grand Sierra Resort in Redevelopment Project Area No
2 (RDA 2) is a historic opportunity to continue this legacy of successful rejuvenation and revitalization
the City of Reno and the Reno Redevelopment Agency will drive transformative economic growth
and tourism without placing any financial burden on the city or its residents
Reno’s redevelopment began with Redevelopment Project Area No
reshaping the downtown core into a tourism and hospitality hub
TIF-funded projects like the National Automobile Museum
Truckee River Walk and Truckee River Whitewater Park helped counter declining visitor numbers
and Silver Legacy benefited from these attractions and TIF-supported expansions
such as Eldorado’s parking lot redevelopment in the early 2000s
demonstrating the potential of public-private partnerships
The $275 million Reno Transportation Rail Access Corridor (ReTRAC) replaced 10 at-grade rail crossings with a 2.25-mile trench
improving safety and enabling events like Hot August Nights
drawing hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to the downtown core annually
offer valuable lessons for shaping future redevelopment efforts
The Meruelo Group’s proposal avoids the ills of earlier TIF projects by eliminating the need for city-backed borrowing
ensuring a financially responsible investment that benefits the community without straining public resources
after an exhaustive 18-month public process
the Reno City Council and Redevelopment Agency established Redevelopment Project Area No
2 (RDA 2) to address areas in need outside of downtown
characterized by deteriorated infrastructure
and additional tourist and visitor declines
RDA 2 included the Reno Hilton (now Grand Sierra Resort)
is now set for a $785.7 million private investment by the Meruelo Group
transforming Reno’s entertainment landscape
Future phases will add 300 workforce housing units
The Meruelo Group’s $785.7 million investment in the Grand Sierra Resort will drive regional economic growth
A 10-year Treasury note would yield $145.8 million more
Alex Meruelo would be significantly wealthier in 10 years if he loaned the money to the federal government or invested it in Las Vegas instead of investing his money in Reno
Meruelo requests reimbursement of the incremental property tax generated by the project’s enhanced value over 10 years
without new taxes or strain on Reno’s general fund
The GSR assumes all financial risk; if the project underperforms
as supported by the Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board on April 21
Critics falsely claim TIF diverts public service funds
but incremental property tax from rising values goes to the Redevelopment Agency
This revenue supports projects like property acquisitions
façade upgrades and sewer fee offsets for other redevelopment projects across the city
Incremental property tax revenue cannot fund general city services while the Agency exists
TIF has bolstered the tourism and hospitality sectors by funding downtown Reno projects designed to attract visitors
private ownership of the arena proposed at the GSR reduces municipal risk by assuring adequate funding for operating
maintenance and capital expenses — costs the city and redevelopment agency simply cannot afford
but which are not absorbed by the private companies that use the facilities
Meruelo’s request includes no municipal debt and no taxpayer funds outside of what the GSR contributes
The same cannot be said for the downtown facilities
which collectively maintain approximately $133 million in obligations spread across three different bonds
the downtown facilities have created substantial financial benefits to the downtown casinos for the past 30 years by using public funds at the expense of the city’s budget
This new proposal by the GSR is a responsible departure from how projects have been built in the past
The GSR project offers Reno a rare opportunity to rival Las Vegas entertainment venues
attracting top-tier events and cementing its status as a premier entertainment destination
set for a spring 2025 groundbreaking and 2027 opening
has an opportunity to deliver on its long-standing promise of bringing significant economic development to the Biggest Little City by approving a sustainable
no-risk investment that will secure a thriving future

planning and development from the University of Southern California
Steinmann is a leading expert in tax increment financing and urban policy who has played a pivotal role in shaping Reno’s redevelopment plan by providing technical assistance to the Reno Redevelopment Agency on district formation and strategic planning

UNR’s Theater and Dance Council put on a “25-hour play festival,” showcasing five plays written by students on April 26 in the Church Fine Arts building
A 25-hour play is a collection of 10-minute plays that have been written
The actors for each play auditioned April 25 at 6:30 a.m.
Each writer was required to have a beach ball involved somehow and a line “I hope he has a shirt on” in their plays
the festival began with “Washed Ashore,” written by Ria Howard
played by Genesis Jessamyn Mahrous Velazquez
being hit in the head with a beachball and getting knocked unconscious
discovers what she’s done and spirals about what this woman’s life was like before she “took it.” The monologue was comically dramatic and was very well performed
setting the pace for the rest of the plays to come
“Everyday for a Summer,” written by Luis Galvez and Benit Hensley
is seen waiting and two “therapists,” played by Ria Howard and Jace Ouchida
The patient starts talking about the issues he’s having and the therapists hilariously do not care about what he is saying
One of the therapists comes up with a horrible metaphor to try and get this patient out of the room and eventually just leaves the patient all on his own
This play had a little more edge than the previous but nonetheless didn’t fail to make the audience laugh
“Regretting Your Hero” is everyone’s worst nightmare
began with a fan who snuck backstage to meet her idol
and instead interacted with the stage manager
The idol is incredibly self-centered and forgets people if they aren’t important to him
The fan and the idol introduced themselves three separate times because the idol kept forgetting the fan
The play ends with a surprising plot twist
The stage manager and the fan end up getting together and that’s where it concluded
Following was “Watson: A Castaway Hommage,” written by Ryan D
an homage to the movie “Castaway.” The beachball had the handprint and face
The two try to find a way to escape and hilariously break into song

The long ball was his eighth of the season
tying him with James Outman (OKC) for the Pacific Coast League lead

– A night after logging only two hits and still escaping victorious
the offense remained slow for the Sacramento River Cats on Saturday as the Reno Aces were powered by a four-run third inning that eventually led to a 5-1 win in game five of the series
– A night after logging only two hits and still escaping victorious
River Cats (15-17) starter Carson Seymour (1-3) started the game off hot
retiring six of the first seven he faced with the only batter reaching on a free pass
two walks to start the third preceded a Jorge Barrosa two-RBI double
and another RBI double with this one from Trey Mancini that set the Aces (18-14) well on their way to victory
as he crushed his seventh homer of the season on the second pitch he saw while leading off the fourth inning
It was his second homer of the series after also hitting a grand slam on Wednesday evening
It took all the way until the eighth for the River Cats to finally reach the scoreboard
avoiding the shutout with a sacrifice fly from Grant McCray in the home half of the frame
Sacramento never had more than one hit in an inning and failed to record an extra-base hit
and the Aces faced just five batters over the minimum
Two of the Sacramento hits came from Osleivis Basabe
who snapped a four-game and 13 at-bat hitless streak by closing his night 2-for-3 with a run scored
who made his Triple-A debut and earned his first Triple-A hit in his first plate appearance during the third inning
Sacramento has dropped four of five so far in the series with Reno
but the River Cats will look to close the series on a good note with a victory in the series finale when the two teams take the diamond at Sutter Health Park at 1:05 p.m

While the Nevada men's basketball team playing in the proposed Grand Sierra Resort Arena has drawn most of the headlines over the last 19 months
the facility also could be home to a minor-league hockey team
While no team is in place for the arena if built
all of the in-depth analysis of the project presented by Hunden Partners
a third party hired by the city of Reno to analyze the redevelopment
have included a minor-league hockey tenant
Of the Hunden Partners' estimated 95 events held in the arena each year
39 are projected to be minor-league hockey games
And given the thin margin of financial wiggle room the developers have said the project has
landing a minor-league hockey team and drawing fans to those games will be key to the project's success if it is approved Wednesday when the Reno Redevelopment Agency Board meets to vote on whether to offer tax-increment financing to the GSR
Reno last had a minor-league hockey team in 1998
which was the final year of a short-lived three-season run by the Reno Renegade/Rage
played in the Reno-Sparks Convention Center from 1995-98
Reno hasn't had a fully pro minor-league hockey team since then
although Northern Nevada has seen a recent renaissance in the sport as the Reno Ice Raiders
has played in the Reno Ice facility since 2021 with the ECHL's Tahoe Knight Monsters debuting in Stateline last fall
While minor-league teams have come and gone in Northern Nevada over the years
including the Renegades/Rage; Reno Bighorns basketball team; and Reno 1868 FC soccer team
the GSR developers believe minor-league hockey would be a success in Reno
I think Reno Ice has done a great job of expanding the local fan base for hockey and getting enough families and the youth sports segment interested in hockey," said Andrew Diss
the senior vice president and chief strategy officer of Meruelo Gaming who has helped oversee the project
We see the job that the Aces have done with minor-league ball
and we think that hockey can be successful."
The Triple-A baseball Reno Aces are the longest standing minor-league team in Northern Nevada
calling the region home since relocating from Tucson in 2009
In its three most recently completed seasons
5,040 (in 2023) and 4,769 (in 2024) fans per home game in the 9,013-capacity Greater Nevada Field
have averaged 3,427 fans per home game in their debut season while playing in the 4,200-seat Tahoe Blue Events Center
That's an average percent capacity of 81.6
Hunden Partners projects minor-league hockey games to draw an average attendance of 4,449 fans per home game in the 10,000-plus-seat GSR Arena
While hurdles in getting a minor-league team to Reno exist
one thing helping the projection is the fact GSR owner Alex Meruelo owns the Tucson Roadrunners
Phase one of the GSR project also includes a community ice rink that would double as a practice facility for a minor-league team
"We are working on bringing a team," Diss said
I feel pretty confident within two years when the facility opens (in 2027) that we will be at that point where we're announcing a new team."
The Hunden Partners presentation also projects five major concerts and seven minor concerts per year as part of those 95 annual events
One of the GSR's big pitches is the arena would change the caliber of acts who would stop in Reno
the top draws from a venue standpoint include the Reno Events Center (7,000 capacity)
outdoor Nugget Event Center (8,500 capacity) and GSR's Grand Theatre (2,900 capacity)
"We think that number is conservative," Diss said of the projected five major concerts and seven minor concerts
"We are shooting for much higher numbers because Reno is a pass-through market for the big shows that are driving along Interstate 80 from Sacramento going out to Salt Lake City or vice versa
And we wanna put Reno on the map as one of those stops for those big shows that are currently bypassing us and going straight to Golden One (in Sacramento)
It's about that market that we are serving not only for the locals but for the Northern California drive-in market
We want to give them a reason to come over here and see that big show that they have been wanting to see."

The city of Reno is implementing a 90-day staffing hiatus on non-mandated boards and commissions as it grapples with a projected $26 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2026.
City Manager Jackie Bryant announced the hiatus
as part of a broader effort to realign operations with current staffing levels and service delivery priorities
Bryant said the hiatus will allow staff to focus on developing a comprehensive review process for community engagement practices
"Community engagement remains an important and valued aspect of our City processes," she said
"The City must ensure our strategies meet the needs and preferences of the community and staff resources are used to meet these needs in the most efficient way possible."
The hiatus affects several boards and commissions
New appointments to these non-mandated boards will not be agendized during this period
Bryant emphasized that the hiatus is not an elimination of boards and commissions but a necessary step to prioritize staff time and resources
"It is a necessary step to review our approach to B&C operations
maintain compliance with Nevada Open Meeting Law
and identify the most accessible and effective ways for residents to engage with their local government," she said
The city plans to present its current community engagement strategies and an overview of the review process on May 7
followed by a presentation on the structure and operations of current boards and commissions on June 4
These efforts aim to establish a modernized framework for public involvement that aligns with the City's reduced organizational capacity
Members of the affected boards and commissions will be contacted directly
and the city will continue to maintain communication with the public to ensure residents remain engaged in city decision-making
News 4-Fox 11 reported earlier this year the city's budget shortfall comes after city leaders forecast slower-than-expected revenue growth due to flat sales tax revenues
Reno finance director Vicki Van Buren told council members the deficit is driven by stagnant consolidated tax revenues
higher interest rates and declining consumer confidence are the major factors that have contributed to the slowdown
"Over 80% of consolidated taxes are sales taxes
So it is very volatile and it's based on people's spending and the economy," Van Buren said
"It can even fluctuate based on people's consumer views of what the economy's going to do people tend to save
Van Buren said city departments have begun cutting costs in the current fiscal year
with departments instructed to find 2% cost savings by taking steps such as holding some positions open
department heads have been told to find ways to lower expenses by 5% and the city will use one-time funds to cover $16.4 million worth of expenses
there is a $3.7 million budget gap after those steps
City staff will host another budget meeting Monday morning and a regularly scheduled council meeting Wednesday
A crowd gathered outside the federal building in downtown Reno on Thursday -- May Day
or International Workers’ Day -- chanting for workers’ rights and protesting President Donald Trump’s actions
The Northern Nevada Central Labor Council, Indivisible Northern Nevada and 50501 Northern Nevada hosted the demonstration and estimated 1,000 people added their names to clipboards supporting the cause
protesters carried homemade signs that had an array of topics
One sign said “Workers over billionaires” while another next to it said
the “Hands off our democracy” theme from previous protests in Carson City was prominent on signs in Reno
as well as the wave of protesters naming Lombardo on their signs and advocating for people to vote against him in 2026
The Virginia City resident told the RGJ she drives to all the protests
because she believes the Republican party is not standing up for the U.S
McMillin said she believes Trump’s executive orders on things like tariffs and federal funding cuts are trickling down to Nevada
and she thinks Republican-dominate areas are going to feel a harsh reality check
She said she was told before the election that she needed to relax and not worry so much
I feel like my worry was warranted,” McMillin said
A Washoe County School District employee for 30 years
Janet Brown said she's a registered Republican
but said she’s “beyond frustrated” with members of her party like Trump and Lombardo not abiding by the U.S
“Donald Trump (is) skirting around the actual constitutional laws
He is trying to be a dictator and make us an authoritarian country,” Brown said
Brown said Trump laid out all of his plans for 2025
and people are just now catching on to what’s going on
are going to suffer the most as federal funding gets cut
Brown said she grew up in a Navy family and was taught to take care of her own
“They taught us to stick up for what was right,” Brown said
said they felt everything Trump has been doing has slowly snuck up on them
“We’re going to be undoing this for decades,” Carrara said
whose parents immigrated from South Africa in 1997
said what they’re witnessing with the ICE deportations and Trump’s actions are terrifying to watch
Carrara added that they weren’t the targeted minority group Trump was going after
“You have to fight for the communities that are already down low
there’s going to be nobody else there to fight for you,” Carrara said
An 8-year-old activistKylie Fraley was one of the youngest activists out Thursday
Her mom, Maria Fraley
said they came out to advocate for her special education rights
and support all of the teachers that assist Fraley in school
“We need the necessary accommodations and equity to survive in the educational system in America,” Fraley said
The 8-year-old told the RGJ she loves school
and that math had become her favorite subject
I’m against.”Robert Richter said he came to support veterans
the Department of Education and every other group affected
pointing to the blow-up of the president he carried throughout the protest
The Reno resident said Trump’s administration is “madness” in the way they pull people off the streets and send them to the El Salvador prison
He also fears the tariffs’ financial implications
“It’s going to happen soon and it's going to hit everyone all at once,” Richter said
Self-declared political activist Jane Ifland traveled all the way from Casper
and happened to catch Reno’s May Day protest
Ifland and her boyfriend were helping move his son to Fallon for a new job
she immediately started searching for a May Day demonstration she could join
“I’m frustrated with the disregard for the plight of the most vulnerable people,” Ifland said
“What I think (Trump) is doing is seeking to destroy the American way of life.”
