WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve will likely keep its key short-term interest rate unchanged on Wednesday despite weeks of harsh criticism and demands from President Donald Trump that the Fed reduce borrowing costs After causing a sharp drop in financial markets two weeks ago by saying he could fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell Trump subsequently backed off and said he had no intention of doing so he and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have said the Fed should cut rates They argue that inflation has steadily cooled and high borrowing costs are no longer needed to restrain price increases The Fed sharply ramped up its short-term rate in 2022 and 2023 as pandemic-era inflation spiked the head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency last Wednesday suggested that DOGE should look more closely at the Fed’s spending on its facilities The heightened scrutiny shows that even as the Trump administration backs off its threats to fire Powell the Fed is still subject to unusually sharp political pressures despite its status as an independent agency the Fed will almost certainly leave its key rate unchanged at about 4.3% when it meets Tuesday and Wednesday Powell and many of the other 18 officials that sit on the Fed’s rate-setting committee have said they want to see how Trump’s tariffs affect the economy before making any moves on Friday said on the social media platform Truth Social that there is “NO INFLATION” and claimed that grocery and egg prices have fallen and that gas has dropped to $1.98 a gallon That’s not entirely true: Grocery prices have jumped 0.5% in two of the past three months and are up 2.4% from a year ago Gas and oil prices have declined — gas costs are down 10% from a year ago — continuing a longer-running trend that has continued in part because of fears the economy will weaken AAA says gas prices nationwide average $3.18 a gallon though in the first three months of the year it was 3.6% according to the Fed’s preferred gauge economists say it’s possible the Fed would soon reduce its benchmark rate because it is currently at a level intended to slow borrowing and spending and cool inflation Yet the Fed can’t now cut rates with Trump’s broad tariffs likely to raise prices in the coming months said that the Fed is “scarred” by what happened in 2021 when prices rose amid supply snarls and Powell and other Fed officials said the increase would likely be “transitory.” Instead inflation soared to a peak of 9.1% in June 2022 “That’s a Fed that is going to have to wait for evidence and be slow to adjust on that evidence,” Reinhart said Trump’s badgering of Powell makes it harder for the Fed chair to cut rates because doing so anytime soon would be seen as knuckling under to the White House “You could imagine a world where there isn’t pressure from the Trump administration and they cut rates … sooner because they feel comfortable making the argument that they’re doing so because of the data,” he said Powell said last month that tariffs would likely push up inflation and slow the economy The central bank would typically raise rates — or at least keep them elevated — to fight inflation while it would cut them to spur the economy if unemployment rose Powell has said that the impact of the tariffs on inflation could be temporary — a one-time price increase — but most recently said it “could also be more persistent.” That suggests that Powell will want to wait to ensure tariffs don’t sustainably raise inflation before considering a rate cut Some economists forecast the Fed won’t cut rates until its September meeting Yet Fed officials could move sooner if the tariffs hit the economy hard enough to cause layoffs and push up unemployment Wall Street investors appear to expect such an outcome — they project that the first cut will occur in July WATCH: Trump criticizes Powell over interest rates, suggests he can remove Fed chair Musk criticized the Fed Wednesday for spending $2.5 billion on an extensive renovation of two of its buildings in Washington we should certainly look to see if indeed the Federal Reserve is spending $2.5 billion on their interior designer,” Musk said Fed officials acknowledge that the cost of the renovations have risen as prices for building materials and labor have spiked amid the post-pandemic inflation say that local regulations forced the Fed to do more of the expansion underground a former Fed governor and a potential candidate to replace Powell as chair when Powell’s term expires next year said recently that the Fed has attracted greater scrutiny because of its failure to keep prices in check “The Fed’s current wounds are largely self-inflicted,” he said in a speech during an International Monetary Fund conference in late April in which he also slammed the Fed for participating in a global forum on climate change “A strategic reset is necessary to mitigate losses of credibility worse economic outcomes for our fellow citizens.” said last month that “Fed independence is very widely understood and supported in Washington © 1996 - 2025 NewsHour Productions LLC PBS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization Subscribe to Here's year rates range from $250 or so in spring or fall to over $2,000 per night in the peak of winter rates are by far the most expensive in January and February you’re best off arriving at New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo Seasonally (in winter), Niseko Direct Shuttle offers service between the airport and the hotel If your flight timing doesn’t coincide with when the shuttle service runs you can expect that a private transfer between the airport and hotel will cost somewhere around 50,000 JPY (~350 USD).Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko signageThe Ritz-Carlton Reserve is located in the Higashiyama area of Niseko so there aren’t many places you can walk a free shuttle is operated every 30 minutes over select hours to Hirafu (among other places) and there you’ll find lots of shopping Otherwise you can of course arrange private transfers — I’ve seen a lot of reports online about very limited taxi availability but we had good luck with Japan’s “GO” taxi app the Ritz-Carlton Reserve gets a failing grade you wonder if you’ve arrived at a luxury resort has anyone seen an uglier exterior to a luxury destination resort the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko’s lobby area is super pretty with a design that’s in line with what you’d expect from a modern ski lodge My only issue with the lobby is how small it is as this is really the extent of the public areas where you can just lounge around The space just doesn’t seem big enough while one of the front desk agents handled check-in formalities I’ll talk more about service in a bit We were informed that we had been upgraded one category from the standard Niseko Reserve King to the Yotei Reserve King (with Mount Yotei being the famous mountain in the area) Our room wasn’t quite ready when we arrived but it was prepared in time for the official check-in time A front desk associate escorted me to our room The elevators are located down the hall from the lobby and on the right because there are aspects of the design that feel high-end located on the property’s top (fourth) floor Upon exiting the elevator and turning left Entry level rooms at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve are 52 square meters (560 square feet) and almost the size of junior suites at many other properties The room featured an entryway with a closet to the side The first thing I noticed is how the room didn’t have any automated “service” or “do not disturb” buttons but instead had a manual sign that you hang on your door That seems really low tech for a luxury hotel that just opened in recent years It’s one of the many examples of why I feel there’s no way this hotel was designed as a Ritz-Carlton Reserve.Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko room entrywayRitz-Carlton Reserve Niseko king room closetPast the entryway was the bedroom and living room area This part of the room has pretty elegant design and then two sliding doors (which were super flimsy) separating the bedroom from the bathroom It’s nice that the hotel offers a free minibar There was also a welcome amenity consisting of some sweets from nearby Niseko Cacao Crown with a mention that they’ll even pick you up if you want to visit the store and buy something though the whole thing felt a bit like a sales pitch While I thought the bedroom felt pretty luxurious the bathroom wasn’t quite to the same level The toilet was in a room off the main part of the bathroom Then there was a “compound” with a shower and bathtub (though this wasn’t an onsen the absolute best part of this room (and the hotel for that matter) are the views of Mount Yotei and it’s nice how unobstructed the vantage point is from this hotel The view was even more special in the mornings and evenings… all-in-all I thought the room was quite nice and spacious There were some very obvious areas of cost cutting that puzzled me but the room is hardly my primary complaint about this property The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko has Spa Chasi La Sothys What’s strange is that the whole setup feels like an afterthought: The spa also has the onsen, which is open to all hotel guests on a complimentary basis, from 6AM until 10AM, and then again from 2PM until 12AM. As you’d expect, it’s gender segregated, and nudity is required with the option of an indoor and outdoor onsen In addition to the gender segregated onsens there’s also a private onsen that guests can rent at the cost of 5,500 JPY per hour (~38 USD) and also doesn’t have an outside area I thought the onsen setup was quite nice (particularly the outside area) Note that the property doesn’t have a pool The gym at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko is on the ground floor People who ski also tend to be pretty active (and frequently work out) So there’s basically room for one person to do a non-cardio workout and walked right out.Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko gymRitz-Carlton Reserve Niseko gymThis was just plain disappointing but unfortunately it matched my overall impression of the hotel — guest experience largely felt like an afterthought The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko has three food & beverage outlets But the space also lacks a vibe — there’s no live music and there’s not some fun venue where you can après ski as well as some other seating clusters.Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko Ume LoungeRitz-Carlton Reserve Niseko Ume LoungeRitz-Carlton Reserve Niseko Ume LoungeBelow is Yukibana so we had that the first afternoon at Ume Lounge You can find the afternoon tea selection below I’d describe the quality of afternoon tea as being okay The meal then began with a selection of bread The first course consisted of a vegetable terrine with pesto sauce The next course was described as cream of broccoli soup with Hokkaido scallop I selected the pan fried flounder fish with ratatouille and boiled parsley potatoes while Ford had the baby chicken with herbs the entire chicken was bones and cartilage and he eating what he could (which was a few bites) dessert consisted of chocolate opera cake with lychee raspberry mousse and fruit plus an extra fruit plate (I think as an apology for the quality of one of the mains).Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko Yukibana Restaurant dinnerRitz-Carlton Reserve Niseko Yukibana Restaurant dinnerThe server taking care of us was awesome (more on her in a bit and asked if we’d be interested in eating at Sushi Nagi the following evening she offered to make us a reservation there the following evening and essentially lower the cost by one-third from 30,000 (~208 USD) JPY to 20,000 JPY (~139 USD) per person giving us a 10,000 JPY per person credit toward the dining experience So we had dinner at Sushi Nagi during the first seating We actually had the whole counter to ourselves You can find the breakfast menu and drink list below Options included things like fresh bread and pastries I had the Japanese breakfast box one morning while I had the baked eggs with Hokkaido eggplant Ford and I also split a pancake one morning We didn’t ski during our time at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko as we were really just here for a full day at the tail end of our trip The property does offer ski-in ski-out facilities The facility definitely feels a bit scaled back compared to the Park Hyatt Niseko offers amazing skiing opportunities But I don’t really have anything to add beyond that service at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko is really where the experience falls apart We found front office service to be pretty bad while we found restaurant service to be quite good so let’s go through those two points separately the person who checked us in just had such a chaotic and frazzled vibe would barely let us speak a sentence without cutting in etc.The attention to detail was lacking for a hotel that’s of this caliber (well or supposed to be of a certain caliber):When our room was ready as Ford was at the gym; I was carrying my rolling bag plus two additional bags and my coat yet the person escorting me to the room didn’t offer to help me with luggage which I found really unusualBoth by email before check-in we were proactively asked if there’s anything we don’t eat and I explained I don’t eat pork at both occasions; yet shortly after checking in we had afternoon tea (which we had a reservation for) and we were offered sandwiches with pork (don’t repeatedly ask guests for their preferences and restrictions if you’re not actually going to do anything with that information!)I had asked to arrange an airport transfer and they weren’t sure if it had been requested yet; I’d expect much faster service at a property like thisEvery time I had a question for the front desk they just started fumbling through papers; I don’t know if this hotel doesn’t use computers but it was just consistent chaosOn the morning of check-out I tried to at least provide some feedback to the hotel but was informed that there was no manager on duty until 9:30AM Vanessa served us at dinner the first night and did a stellar job with service recovery given the quality of Ford’s main course She was clearly invested in every guest having a great experience Sena served us the following evening at Sushi Nagi I hope to see them again at another property ideally one with a more consistent service level in line with the caliber of service that they provided.Like I said my issue with the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko is just how many little issues there were staying here is anything but frictionless.Bottom lineThe Ritz-Carlton Reserve Niseko disappointed me There are aspects of the hotel that are great the design of some of the public facilities Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" the day on the slopes is literally a day in the gym Unless you spend more time at the mountain bars the need for a gym is pretty limited at a ski resort or wanting to go to the gym after a day on the pistes It is a bit like missing a tanning bed at a resort in Hawaii Though you could very well argue that they should cater to both the skiers and they more relaxed (non skiing) spouses Though I did actually go to the gym at the RCR Niseko as we did not ski every day Wish there were standards for top tier brands like RC Reserve The lobbies at new or newly renovated Courtyards are as nice or nicer Marriott will put a brand on anything if an owner pays How does one book through the Marriott Stars program I have never seen this option either via the web or the app You need to book with an accredited travel agent They're very common in Japan in all levels of homes/apartments From detached family homes to high-end apartments (think $10k/month) in Tokyo's Rappongi district What you had in your room is very common in the latter Looks very similar to one I had - down to the plumbing hardware and the glass panel and plumbing hardware They're unfamiliar to a lot of Westerners but make practical sense I think there’s a seed of a new brand here “Ritz-Carlton Express offers owners a cost-effective platform to command a higher ADR from their existing limited-service property with a significantly lower cost structure than a traditional luxury hotel The guest experience will be enhanced with signature service touch points like in-room snacks and a localized sponsored welcome gift Marriott is targeting 1st and 2nd generation select service properties like Comfort Suites and TownePlace.. “Ritz-Carlton Express offers owners a cost-effective platform to command a higher ADR from their existing limited-service property with a significantly lower cost structure than a traditional luxury hotel Marriott is targeting 1st and 2nd generation select service properties like Comfort Suites and TownePlace for the brand.” LOL I'd heart this if I were a proper member here It's not like you can go running outside in the winter It feels like it's trying to capitalize on the view at the expense of everything else View from the room and the public areas of Yotei is very good Brand name is something leased by a property owner and is meaningless One must assess each property on its own and rely on reviews from *trusted* sources but did you personally present yourself with the same demeanor Did you walk up to the desk at a standard pace Mirror neurons are a phenomenon and the literature suggests the Japanese habitually and non-consciously copy the demeanor of those in front of them Meh I have a hard time believing Ben and Ford did not act normal Ritz-Reserve is literally the most premier brand (on paper) of Bonvoy The service should be almost perfect and if the customer is stressed So the good thing about that Egyptian video release of Ben walking through the airport is that we got to see how Ben acts when he (thinks) he's not being recorded for the world to see a lot of people who present themselves as stressed aren't self-aware of it that's also perceived as negative (frazzled I get that and if this was a small independent 3 star hotel somewhere random I would agree with you this is literally Marriott's most premier brand Unless a customer is hostile which I highly doubt Most St Regis' for example don't even have desks but sit you down in a nice table to check you in The most premier brand in a very touristy area should do better The expectation for a top tier hotel is that clients will be shown good hospitality even if they are stressed or frazzled Obviously there are limits - if they start behaving in an abusive manner hospitality at high end hotels isn't predicated on the client not being stressed or frazzled This is by far the nicest Compared with the start of the Korean War in 1950 — Toulotte’s case study for a successful mass mobilization — today’s Marine Corps has a slightly larger combined Reserve and active component: approximately 250,000 Marines now, compared with about 204,000 then, he said. But the Marine Reserve now has just eight infantry battalions, compared to 26 then, and one fighter squadron, compared to 30 then. While smaller-scale mobilization exercises have taken place more recently, and the Individual Ready Reserve holds routine musters to monitor responsiveness, Toulotte said nothing from the recent past can compare to the exercises Marine Corps Reserve Command is now planning. Marine Forces Reserve troops participate in Integrated Training Exercise 4-24 in Twentynine Palms, California, in 2024. (Lance Cpl. Orion Stpierre/Marine Corps)“I would say it’s probably the first time since the beginning of [Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003] that we’ve deliberately looked at this: How can we speed the response of the Reserve component in response to a peer threat?” he told Marine Corps Times. The nature of the drills is still in planning; Toulotte said the first one is likely to be small. But they will test, he said, how quickly units can aggregate together with all the fighting gear they need for deployments. Compared with the norm in previous years, when Reserve component activations for deployments may be planned years in advance, “our exercises are going to test our ability to get those units aggregated quickly,” he said. “Not just the personnel, because oftentimes, over the last 20 to 25 years, we would just send our personnel forward and they would fall in on the equipment forward. We’re assuming that that won’t be the case. So what we’re driving towards is, how do we pick up all of our people, all of our equipment, and push that forward to wherever the active component tells us we need to go.” The Marine Reserve, Toulotte said, is also seeking to add the ability to activate as a component of readiness scoring in the military-wide Defense Readiness Reporting System. Selected Reserve component Marines can expect to see drill days more closely focused on training for deployment readiness and job proficiency, Toulotte said. “How do we get out the door as fast as possible? That’s fundamentally going to change, potentially, annual training plans, things at the unit level that they’re focusing on,” he said. “And so it should be, potentially, a breath of fresh air for the Reserve Marines, because we’re going to get back to the war-fighting basics of their [military occupational specialty] and their unit.” Toulotte stressed that the entire Defense Department needed to undertake similar mobilization tests to ensure that mass Reserve activation in case of crises was successful. “These are isolated initiatives, and we need to look at this from a joint force,” Toulotte said. “If we don’t, and we enter protracted, pure conflict, and it’s in response to an enemy that is moving on its objectives quickly, our force flow will be delayed and will be at risk of preventing the enemy from gaining those objectives.” Facebook pageTwitter feedRSS feedDefense News © 2025 Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information will leave at the end of the year following more than three decades at the US central bank according to people familiar with the matter who joined the central bank as an economist in 1992 rose within the agency under former Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo following the 2008 financial crisis he informed some staff of his plan to retire from the Fed who asked not to be identified because the move hadn’t been publicly announced StarbucksBy Meredith HolserMay 05 2025Meredith HolserAffiliate and Food WriterMeredith Holser is B+C's resident affiliate writer Meredith enjoys writing about a range of topics but she's adopted e-commerce writing in all its many facets and dreaming about having a yummy little treat Inspired by the Iced Ube Coconut Latte that hit Starbucks Reserve menus this spring the all-new Ube Espresso Martini is topped with the most delicious ube-flavored cold foam The drink itself mixes Starbucks Reserve espresso Since it's crafted with fresh espresso you'll get a more coffee-forward sip than other martinis that just use coffee liqueur This subdued sip is still mighty impressive You can order this one hot or iced from Starbucks Reserve locations plus Starbucks notes it pairs well with a sweet treat – which we're always here for The next new item on the Starbucks Reserve summer menu is simply savory and makes a great option for breakfast or even a mid-day snack the Crispy Hashbrown Egg Cups highlight a wonderful texture which you can also order with freshly-sliced prosciutto All three new items on the Starbucks Reserve summer menu will be available alongside items like the Iced Ube Coconut Latte and Rose Pistachio Twice-Baked Cornetto that hit Reserve locations in the spring Subscribe to our newsletter for more Starbucks news Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information Arizona’s measure to create a digital asset reserve explicitly allowing taxpayer-funded investments in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies was vetoed by Gov The measure (S.B. 1025) which would have been the first law of its kind in the nation would have allowed the state treasurer and public retirement systems to invest up to 10% of the money they control in virtual currencies The veto is the latest setback to Bitcoin advocates who have yet to persuade policymakers to enact a law in the more than two dozen states considering similar legislation this year Log in to keep reading or access research tools 2025 Arizona governor vetoes bill to make Bitcoin part of state reserves Arizona’s plan to invest in Bitcoin has ended in a veto with Governor Katie Hobbs citing concerns over using public funds for "untested assets." the lives of more Israelis for the sake of the political survival of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu Yair Golan made the remarks in an X post on Monday a day after Israel's so-called security cabinet unanimously approved a new plan to expand attacks in Gaza and occupy additional areas throughout the besieged Palestinian territory He said the decision to expand the offensive was made “not to maintain Israel’s security but to save Netanyahu" and his extremist cabinet The occupation army’s only role is to protect Israelis who also heads the opposition Democrats party The actual occupation of the Strip in the name of survival "will cost us blood – in the lives of the captives The criticism came after Israel's so-called security cabinet approved the phased plan for the brutal Israeli onslaught that involves conducting “powerful strikes” across Gaza and forcibly displacing Palestinians to the territory's south The forum representing the families of Israeli captives said in a statement that the plan is the acknowledgement by the regime that it is choosing to occupy more territory over releasing captives a framework for the future distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip via private foreign firms Far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir opposed the resumption of aid deliveries into Gaza the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that bakeries and community kitchens are no longer operating while food warehouses have been emptied as a result of Israel's total siege on Gaza The new framework for the distribution of Gaza aid " contravenes fundamental humanitarian principles and appears designed to reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic – as part of a military strategy driving civilians into militarized zones to collect rations while further entrenching forced displacement," it emphasized Israel launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 7 which has so far killed at least 52,535 Palestinians The Tel Aviv regime accepted longstanding negotiation terms by the Hamas resistance group under a Gaza ceasefire Israel unilaterally abandoned the truce on March 2 cutting off humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip It also resumed its deadly bombing campaign and redeployed troops to the blockaded territory Press TV’s website can also be accessed at the
