Crozer Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital
have now closed their doors to Delaware County and its half a million residents
The closures destroy a vital resource in the community and has caused one of the largest mass layoffs in recent Pennsylvania history
The sell-off of Crozer assets and the subsequent closures were approved by Judge Stacey Jernigan on April
in a bankruptcy proceeding in Texas involving the California-based parent company of Crozer
The company had been seeking bankruptcy protections since January
acquired Crozer in 2016 and proceeded to strip its assets and saddle it with an estimated $400 million in debt
Private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners controlled a majority stake in Prospect until 2021
CBS News reported that the firm’s leadership handed itself $457 million in dividends in the year 2018 alone
Prospect Medical’s CEO Sam Lee took home $90 million
and Leonard Green shareholders gobbled up $257 million
Almost immediately after the court finalized the bankruptcy sell-off plan
the Pennsylvania hospitals closed their doors
Within just one week of the order almost all of the patients in both hospitals had been packed up and shipped like cargo to a different location—mere commodities in America’s for-profit health care system
Eight facilities closed in all: Crozer-Chester Medical Center; Crozer-Taylor Hospital; Crozer-Chester Medical Center Behavioral Health Unit; Crozer Health Corporate Offices; Crozer-Springfield Hospital; Crozer Springfield Hospital Offices; Crozer-West 15th Street Offices; Crozer-West 15th Street Offices Behavioral Health Unit
The consequences of the closures will be far-reaching for this historic working-class community southwest of Philadelphia
It is openly admitted that lives will be lost in emergency room visits
owing to commute times to the nearest hospitals of at least one half-hour—or much longer in metropolitan Philadelphia
currently ranked the fifth-most congested city in the US
The absorption of tens of thousands of patients from the Chester area in other hospitals will stretch these already overburdened and understaffed facilities to the breaking point
neither the state government headed up by Democrat Josh Shapiro
took any action that would have prevented the closures
Republican and Democratic parties spend trillions of dollars on war
corporate bailouts and tax breaks for the super-rich
while the working class is told that it must pay with austerity and the loss of vital resources
WSWS reporters spoke to local residents to learn how the closures will impact their lives
and we live right across the street in the apartments
and I remember I could just walk him to the emergency room if I needed to
My ex-husband and his elderly mother live right up the street and have been to this hospital many times for emergency reasons
and had he not had a hospital this close he could have been killed.”
Maureen said several other family members and friends have used both hospitals
“I am so disheartened that these hospitals have closed
There are just so many more sickly people now since COVID
said: “My heart goes out to the people who will be hurt by these closures
The owner company should be held accountable
“My taxes will have to go up now because they didn’t want to pay theirs,” she added
adding that “taxes keep going up for regular people
while the rich pay less in taxes and keep getting richer.” Ray told reporters that very morning he had returned after a 45-minute drive to take his elderly mother to the nearest hospital
Ray was standing just one block from the recently-closed Taylor hospital
told the WSWS that she was “scared to death for her grandchildren.”
“I wonder where some of my elderly family members will go
all of our medical needs were met by these hospitals
I blame the local and state government at fault for not doing enough to keep the hospitals open and for not taking the action required to keep these facilities operating.” When a WSWS reporter noted that the federal government finds $1 trillion for the Pentagon’s war machine and nothing to keep open hospitals on which hundreds of thousands defend
Mary added that her grandmother once served on the board of the hospital
whose roots stretch back well over a century
“This hospital was the heart and soul of our community,” she said
“And what will happen to the laid off workers
explained to the WSWS said that his friend
said that the word had gotten out that Prospect Holdings was stripping the hospital for its assets
“The closure is going to devastate the community,” Larry said
“It was its center.” Himself a former worker at Crozer
Larry pointed out that Martin Luther King Jr completed his undergraduate studies at Crozer Theological Seminary
One resident thanked the WSWS for reporting on the closure but
Our hospitals are gone.” The reporters told the man that what has been done can be undone
and that the alarm must be raised for the whole working class

One of the things that’s fun about this job is that it truly changes daily. Boring it is not. I wake up in the morning never knowing what funny, awful, or bizarre thing happened. And, well, sometimes — not often — something happens that is the funny-awful-bizarre trifecta. (Remember this guy?!) And so I give you the so-called Delco Pooper
But when you have the public pitchforking (and believe me
the pitchforks are out) over someone they are calling the Delco Pooper
it’s hard not to delve into the rabbit hole
On Tuesday at the intersection of 4th and Madison in Prospect Park
And one of the people involved in said road rage dispute did something that no one expected
The woman in the gray car then calls the Delco pooper a “slut,” which
is an awful thing to call someone but is also the least bad thing that could happen after someone poops on the hood of the car that you’re sitting in
Because I’ve seen video of the Delco pooper in action
which isn’t available for me to link to in any public forums (it’s circulating in private members-only groups)
I’m not allowed to show you the full squatting incident
but the powers-that-be say I can show you the
in a you-just-walked-into-a-gas-station-bathroom kind of way:
This was all the talk of Delco on Wednesday
internet sleuths believed they had identified the woman based on the visual similarities of the Delco Pooper and the Facebook profile photo of a woman who lives in Delco
Prospect Park police chief Dave Madonna tells me that his department is investigating the messy incident
“We can’t have things like this happening in Prospect park,” he insists
Lots of people actually seem to think that the whole Delco Pooper video is a fake. But, here, Madonna explains why they are full of, well, you know what

a Delco destination restaurant reinvents itselfRosemary's menu was the most ambitious in Delaware County
But “I didn’t get into this for accolades,” said owner Philip Breen
who is laying off nearly half his kitchen staff
Rosemary, the stylish bistro that opened 16 months ago in up-and-coming Ridley Park, may have had the food, drinks, and atmosphere dialed in.
But the customer count and revenue have not been there
Its menu — the most ambitious in the Delaware County town
among dinner entrees in the $20-to-$34 range — is being retooled to become “more conscientious of the economics,” Breen said
“People identified us as a special-occasion restaurant or a destination.”
now about $56 per person for an entree and alcoholic drink
“We’re still focusing on hospitality,” Breen said
who has been on board since March following the departure of opening chef Elijah Milligan
which will include starters such as crab cakes ($22) and butternut squash soup ($12) and sandwiches such as pesto chicken on house-made ciabatta with burrata ($18) and a cheesesteak French dip ($22)
“I know ‘cheesesteak’ doesn’t sound like the most amazing thing in the world
but our cheesesteak is going to be sliced filet with roasted garlic on the roll
pastas will remain on the menu but will come off in favor of pizzas
Sabatino is a longtime pizzaiolo who created pizzas for a concept called Good Luck Pizza Co
though Breen and Sabatino intend to make happy hour a priority
Critics have been generous with praise, but “I didn’t get into this for accolades,” said Breen
who lives nearby with his family and intended Rosemary as a neighborhood restaurant
“I have people that come almost every week..
It’s just not at the clip that we needed it to be at.”
Breen was a manager at Condesa in Center City in March 2020 when he and his family moved into Ridley Park from Secane
Condesa closed temporarily because of COVID-19 and Breen was out of work
and outdoor dining in a landscaped back yard
The streamlined menu will require fewer kitchen workers
Breen said the decision to lay off six of the 14 people was “gut-wrenching.”
“We had gotten to a point with this culture where it’s amazing,” Breen said
“So this for me is the saddest part of all.”
Chef George Sabatino brings a fresh perspective to the Delco hot spot
turning it into a culinary destination that's worth the drive
Plates from Rosemary / Photography by Ed Newton
“Afternoon Delight” by Starland Vocal Band was playing
The cream-colored walls and green ferns in the bar made the place feel like a Midwest airport Hilton circa 1983 — someplace where the present hadn’t arrived yet but had promised it was on the way
But this was exactly how owner Philip Breen and opening chef Elijah Milligan wanted it. On that first night at their Delco date-night hot spot in Ridley Park
People could feel the talent in the kitchen counterweighting the carefully curated nostalgia
Milligan opened the kitchen at Rosemary in July of 2023. I was there seven months later, in early January, prepping for a review that would never run because, in February — just seven months after opening night — news broke that Milligan was leaving, saying he had some unspecified other Delco project in the works. In March, it was announced that George Sabatino would be taking over at Rosemary
making changes — a little weird because Sabatino had cooked in a lot of different places (most recently as culinary director for the Safran-Turney restaurant empire)
but all of those places had one thing in common: They weren’t in the suburbs
Sabatino said he wasn’t sure if he’d ever even been to Delco before taking the gig with Breen
Rosemary owner Philip Breen and chef George Sabatino
and compact as Philly’s restaurant history
those rhymes come with a machine gun patter
they come together in this kitchen and that one
working with and for different conglomerations of bosses who
have histories as complicated as Masonic handshakes
Burrata with chili crisp and a plate of marinated beets at Rosemary
Philly Mag named him Best Chef in Philly — an honor he answered by immediately leaving Stateside to go off and do his own thing
And Sabatino in Rosemary’s kitchen? Sabatino
free from the youthful modernist influences and ego-driven experimentalism that defined his time at Stateside and
For a guy who didn’t even know the way to Ridley Park
he’s now pushing out scratch focaccia and half-chickens with charred lemon and harissa vinaigrette
The beets paired with strawberries and a cloud of whipped ricotta and the roasted carrots with lemon yogurt and pistachio almost feel like callbacks to the early days at Aldine
then pan-fried crisp and perfect golden-brown
served with nothing more than a hit of lemon and a stinging horseradish cream — may be the very definition of modern suburban simplicity
and also the best potato variation I’ve had in a long time
The dining room is exactly the same fern-bedecked
the greenhouse and patio seating have backyard-picnic comforts as seen through the lens of an Architectural Digest photo spread (minus the occasional train roaring by just on the other side of the fence)
And all involved know exactly what they’re doing
as evidenced by the “Tonic and Gin” cocktail on the bar menu — all pink and sweet with its elderflower
named for that most desperately suburban of ’70s drinking anthems
Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” — but there’s a thin and gleaming edge of modern energy here in the plating
The handmade spinach gnudi were gluey and dull and came in a broken brown butter sauce that speaks of a lack of critical attention at the pass
pair a cocktail with the Japanese milk bread crab toast and happy hour slabs of glazed
and you’ll forget how far from the city you (and George Sabatino) have wandered
