images of cars flying around banked ovals likely come to mind
But just down the road in wine country lies a different beast: Sonoma Raceway
and one where a legendary driver with Rio Linda ties
Before he became a household name and NASCAR Hall of Famer
Jeff Gordon spent formative years racing right here in the Rio Linda area
honing the skills that would make him a racing icon
And while Gordon conquered tracks across the country
With a record five Cup Series wins at this challenging road course
Gordon demonstrated the incredible finesse
and car control required to succeed where left and right turns rule the day
Sonoma isn’t your typical NASCAR venue
1.99-mile layout (sometimes using the 2.52-mile “Carousel” configuration) features 10 demanding turns and a significant 160-foot elevation change – the most on the NASCAR circuit
Forget simply mashing the gas; drivers here battle their 3,400-pound machines through sharp hairpins
requiring precision braking and masterful shifting more reminiscent of international sports car racing
“Sonoma has always been a very technical flowing road course,” notes Denny Hamlin
“It’s a great racetrack and all the drivers and teams enjoy a changeup even from other road courses we have on the schedule,” adds Aric Almirola
why should Rio Linda fans make the short trip
The tight corners and narrow straights mean close-quarters racing
Contact isn’t just possible; it’s practically guaranteed
“rubbin’ is racin’,” and Sonoma often delivers fender-bending duels and dramatic last-lap moves
especially heading into the infamous Turn 11
“Turn 11 will be seeing a lot of smoke,” predicts Cup Series driver Austin Dillon
“It’s going to be an exciting race.”
Recent track improvements have only upped the ante
all the time,” says former champion Kyle Busch
Drivers with diverse racing backgrounds often excel
leading to unexpected winners and thrilling championship implications
It’s a chance to see raw talent shine on a uniquely challenging stage
Imagine it: The roar of V8 engines echoing through the Sonoma hills
the smell of tires and race fuel hanging in the air
and the sight of colorful stock cars sliding and battling just inches apart
It’s a full-sensory experience unlike any other in motorsports
Whether you cheered for Rio Linda’s own Jeff Gordon back in the day or you’re new to the excitement of NASCAR
witnessing the drama unfold on a road course is a must
And there’s no better place to do it than at the iconic Sonoma Raceway

Arizona State's Cam Skattebo reacts after throwing a pass for a touchdown during the fourth quarter against the Texas Longhorns in the Peach Bowl on Jan
about stepping down as football coach at Rio Linda High School in California after the 2013 season
who was coaching his son Matthew for his senior season
also had a fullback and linebacker on his team named Leo Skattebo
Debbie Morris attempted — unsuccessfully — to convince her husband to stay on the sidelines by issuing a warning about Leo’s younger brother
“[She] said you need to keep coaching until Cameron gets here because he’s going to win everything and go to the NFL,” Mike Morris recalled
“‘They’re going to interview his head coach and it’s not going to be you.’ ”
Cameron is Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo, whom the Giants selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last Saturday
General manager Joe Schoen called Skattebo “one of our favorite players” to evaluate during the pre-draft process
Skattebo’s journey took him from zero FBS college offers after his senior year of high school in 2019 to an Associated Press first-team All-American selection five years later
In between came a stop at Sacramento State in 2001-02
“He’s a 220-pound back who runs with power
and has the type of personality we are looking for,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said
“I think Joe and the scouts did a great job of bringing in guys that have a lot of toughness.”
Morris said that in order to understand that toughness ahead of the Giants’ rookie minicamp (May 9-11)
people need to know about where Skattebo comes from
Rio Linda is about 30 minutes north of Sacramento and has a population of nearly 17,000
It’s a blue-collar town in which the high school football team isn’t always the most talented but takes pride in wearing teams down physically
but he also was a different caliber of athlete
Not only did his brother Leo play at Bowling Green
whom Mike Morris called a “freak of nature,” even as a child
“Cam just dominated at the youth level,” said Morris
in high school and was Rio Linda’s athletic director when Cam Skattebo enrolled
“His dad was his youth coach and it was basically [run] Cameron left
[run] Cameron right and win a whole bunch of football games.”
It wasn’t surprising to see him barrel over defenders in a fashion similar to the way he did in college
I’ve been doing the same thing,” Skattebo said on a recent conference call
I’ve stuck with the path that I’ve put myself on
Skattebo lived up to expectations in his junior year of high school in 2018
He ran for 3,550 yards and 42 touchdowns and led Rio Linda to the California Interscholastic Federation 5-AA state championship
Skattebo’s coach for three seasons at the school
sensed something was different the year before
From Skattebo’s first practice as a sophomore
Garceau saw he was gifted but also was determined not to just rely on his talents
It was the unwillingness to be beaten by anybody and the willingness to take extra reps until he won,” Garceau said
“That was something that carried all the way through
That was clear in that 2018 state championship game on a play that went viral last season during Arizona State’s run to the Big 12 championship
Skattebo shook off nearly all 11 defenders at various points during a 67-yard touchdown run
Defenders grabbed at his legs and his shoulders but couldn’t bring him down
Three defenders converged to tackle him at one point
but Skattebo pulled himself away and left them on the turf while he raced to the end zone
they rallied around what he did and that just changed the complexion of the game,” Garceau said
“They realized how special and tough he actually was.”
Skattebo amassed 393 yards and three touchdowns that day
That big-time performance foreshadowed what happened at the Peach Bowl with Arizona State in January
Skattebo struggled early in the game and was seen vomiting on the sideline
two touchdowns and a 42-yard passing touchdown on a trick play
Despite the Sun Devils’ 39-31 loss in double overtime to Texas
Skattebo was named the game’s most outstanding player
It was just another example of the toughness he learned in Rio Linda
Garceau and Morris expect more of the same with Skattebo in the NFL as he competes for carries behind the Giants’ Tyrone Tracy Jr
That’s the one thing I can tell you 100% for sure,” Garceau said
he’s going to do more than what you ask him to put in
That’s just always the way that he’s been.”
Skattebo noted after being drafted that he’s been doubted before in his life
he had to prove himself at Sacramento State
where he ran for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns and had 605 receiving yards in his senior season
and he expects to do the same with the Giants
carrying on the lessons he developed back home
“The journey that I’ve been on has been a long one
“I can’t wait to get to New York and start playing ball.”

Before he became a national name at Arizona State and Sacramento State
fearless competitor on the fields of Northern California
playing for Rio Linda’s Junior Knights youth football program
Coaches quickly noticed his hard-nosed running style
and sheer will to compete—traits that would define his career for years to come
Skattebo’s potential exploded into record-breaking production

Schools like UCLA and USC came to Rio Linda to scout him but ultimately passed
where he proved all the doubters wrong—again
After back-to-back standout seasons at Sac State
including winning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year in 2022
he became one of the best running backs in the country
culminating in a First-Team AP All-American selection in 2024

Standing 5’9 ½” and 219 pounds
Skattebo impressed NFL scouts with his toughness
and ability to force missed tackles—he forced 102 missed tackles on runs last season
While his 40-yard dash time of 4.65 seconds isn’t elite by NFL standards
and relentless drive make him a perfect fit for the Giants’ physical rushing attack

the once-overlooked kid from Rio Linda is heading to the biggest stage in football—and he’s taking a piece of his hometown with him
2025 – A chilling investigation has concluded with the discovery of the body of Matthew Clark
in a shallow grave on a property located on the 100 block of U Street in Rio Linda
while authorities continue to search for an accomplice
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office initially began investigating Clark’s disappearance in January 2024
after he was reported missing by Fermin’s brother following an argument with his live-in girlfriend
Concerns were raised when Fermin sold Clark’s pickup truck and other belongings
The investigation intensified in June 2024 when Clark’s truck was found in San Joaquin County
Fingerprints belonging to Jerry Mulford were discovered inside the vehicle
led detectives to believe that Fermin shot Clark after an argument in December 2023
The investigation indicated his body was likely buried on the U Street property in Rio Linda
a search warrant was executed at the Rio Linda property by Sheriff’s Detectives and the FBI Evidence Response Team
and the mummified remains of Matthew Clark were recovered
An autopsy confirmed Clark’s identity and revealed he had been shot multiple times
and is currently held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail
Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 27
remains at large and is thought to have fled the state
He is wanted on an active felony warrant for accessory after the fact
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information regarding Jerry Mulford’s whereabouts or this investigation to come forward

The topic of incorporation has surfaced once again in Rio Linda/Elverta
with residents and community leaders weighing the potential benefits and drawbacks of becoming a city
it’s important to examine the facts and consider how incorporation could impact the future of this growing region
On February 24th, 2025, the Rio Linda Elverta Neighborhood Association invited Michael Seaman from California [Un]Incorporated to speak on the possibility and process of incorporation
With an estimated population of 22,610 in 2025

the community receives municipal services from a variety of sources:
A key question facing residents is whether they are satisfied with the current level of service provided by Sacramento County

decisions are often made by county officials who may not fully understand the community’s specific needs and priorities
Incorporation would shift this balance of power
giving residents a greater say in shaping their own future
The process of incorporation in California is often described as:
These challenges have led organizations like California (un)Incorporated to advocate for changes that would make incorporation more accessible

Rio Linda residents looking for their morning donut fix were met with closed doors at Jimmy’s Donuts (748 M St.) on Tuesday
A Sacramento County routine inspection resulted in the temporary closure of the shop due to the presence of cockroaches and other health code violations
The inspection report details the discovery of live German cockroaches in multiple areas
including over 10 adults and egg masses found under the coffee machine
Additional violations included unclean surfaces
Inspectors observed old food debris on the floor and “soiled” cardboard used as a liner under flour

and Twin Rivers Unified School District (TRUSD) representatives recently met to discuss the possibility of naming the Rio Linda High School football field after a deserving individual
The overwhelming consensus was to honor retired head coach and athletic director
When the football field and running track are resurfaced this year
it is likely that the field will be named “Michael Morris Field at Marion Adams Memorial Stadium”
Coach Morris’s legacy at Rio Linda High School is one of dedication
and track and field at Enterprise High School
where he also served as student body president
His athletic pursuits continued at Shasta College
where he again participated in football and track
in History with a double concentration in World and U.S
He later received his teaching credential from Sac State and began his career at Rio Linda Jr
After brief stints at Foothill High School and Martin Luther King Jr
he found his long-term home at Rio Linda High School in 1991
Coach Morris’s impact on Rio Linda High School spanned decades
He taught World History and served as Athletic Director until his retirement in June 2022
His contributions extended beyond the school
as he served as the FVL representative to the Sac-Joaquin Section Board of Managers
was a member of the Section’s Playoff Committee
and the Section’s Football Advisory Committee
earning a master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University
His coaching career began at San Juan High School
where he quickly rose from freshmen assistant coach to junior varsity line coach and defensive coordinator
He then served as assistant head coach and line coach at Foothill High School for four years before taking the helm at Rio Linda
Coach Morris served as the head football coach at Rio Linda
the Knights were Section Champions in 2004
and amassed an impressive 86-30-1 record in the CVC and a 148-103-1 overall record
His exceptional leadership earned him numerous accolades
National Football Foundation “Red Smith” Award (2005)
and Optimist All-Star North Coach (2007 and 2013)
Coach Morris demonstrated his commitment to the community by volunteering as the Head Coach for the Law Enforcement Team (the Hogs) in the annual Guns and Hoses Football Game (Pig Bowl) from 2011 to 2024
with the Hogs defeating the Fire Department 27-13
Coach Morris is in his ninth season with the American River College Beavers
the Tight Ends Coach and Run Game Coordinator
The committee’s nearly unanimous vote to name the field in his honor will be presented to the Twin Rivers Unified School District Board for consideration on February 25
It is important to note that this proposal concerns the field itself
Rio Linda is about to welcome a brand-new addition to its culinary scene
an Italian-American comfort food restaurant
marking a significant milestone for the community
The restaurant is the brainchild of Natalee and Jeremy Price
owners of the highly regarded A Taste of Tuscany in Antelope
this is more than just a business venture—it’s a homecoming
she attended Elverta Elementary and Alpha Middle School before spending her freshman year at Rio Linda High School in 1997
Her family moved to Missouri following the tragic death of Michelle Montoya
but Natalee found her way back to the Sacramento area after graduating in 2000
where she serves on the city’s planning commission and is an active member of the Antelope Lions Club
But her heart has always been with Rio Linda
a place she describes as uniquely tight-knit
“People here take the time for each other,” Natalee shared
and you’ll see someone sitting alone with a cup of coffee
The Grotto is designed to be a cozy yet versatile space
“I want this to be a place where you can grab an appetizer and a beer after work or celebrate homecoming in a nice setting without having to drive out of town,” Natalee said
With booth seating that can be expanded for larger gatherings and plans for live performances
The Grotto is poised to become a hub for Rio Linda residents
The positive ideas flowed during our hour-long discussion- Al fresco Sunday Brunch
bringing in the RLHS Jazz Band and Choir for performances and sharing the revenue
inviting local churches to bring their congregation to The Grotto for an early Sunday service before opening for Sunday brunch
While the menu has roots in Italian cuisine
it’s been thoughtfully expanded to include a wide variety of dishes to accommodate different tastes and dietary needs
The Prices have worked hard to ensure there’s something for everyone
“My background in cultural anthropology really influenced the menu,” Natalee explained
“I wanted to reflect the diversity of people and their preferences
Whether it’s providing fish on Fridays or avoiding pork in certain dishes
Although brunch isn’t part of the initial rollout
with plans to feature items like Natalee’s favorite dish: strata—a savory bread pudding with sausage
Opening The Grotto hasn’t been without its hurdles
Natalee had initially hoped for a “walk-in ready” space but quickly discovered that the reality was far from that
From broken floorboards and tiles to outdated equipment
the renovation process has been painstaking
Another challenge has been navigating Sacramento County’s permitting process
“I can’t just order equipment and install it,” she explained
and then have inspectors come out to confirm everything.” Despite these delays
the restaurant is now in the final stages of health permitting
aiming to hire five to eight employees for both the front and back of the house
“I’m a ‘Positive Polly,’ and I work best with people who share that energy
I’m also bringing over my executive chef from Taste of Tuscany
who’s not only culinary-trained but also shares my passion for creating comforting
Natalee envisions The Grotto as more than just a restaurant; she wants it to be a resource for the community
The restaurant will close on Mondays and Tuesdays to allow the space to be used for events
Natalee and her team at Taste of Tuscany partnered with local organizations to feed over 10,000 people
She hopes to bring that same spirit of giving to Rio Linda
While there are no plans for major promotional events at the start
Natalee is excited about the ribbon-cutting ceremony and soft openings for friends
“Opening night is for my immediate circle—people who will forgive us if something goes wrong,” she joked
“The next soft opening will be for Rio Linda locals
we’ll go all out with a big ribbon-cutting event.”
Natalee and Jeremy Price are pouring their hearts into making The Grotto a place that reflects the best of Rio Linda: warmth
Whether it’s a meal after a long day or a celebration of life’s milestones
The Grotto promises to be a restaurant where memories are made
The Grotto is currently selling VIP gift vouchers that fit nicely in a Christmas stocking or holiday greeting card. You can find out more by visiting the website at https://thegrotto.restaurant/ or the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568599739069

Rio Linda is a haven for Mexican food lovers
that’s garnered recognition beyond the region
El Rinconsito De Jalisco has taken over the spot previously occupied by BG’s and a string of other restaurants that struggled to find a foothold
my spouse and I ventured out for a Wednesday night dinner to see if this latest contender could win over our taste buds
a crowd-pleaser served with a vibrant pico de gallo and a cool avocado sauce
overflowing with melted cheese and tender chicken
The Poblano (Anaheim?) pepper boasted a golden
As a self-proclaimed Chile Relleno aficionado
While I understand salt is a personal preference
a sprinkle could have elevated the flavors
My wife’s chicken fajitas presented a surprise
Unlike the sizzling platters overflowing with peppers
El Rinconsito’s version arrived on a plate with just the chicken
possibly house-made judging by their delightful texture
was a bit dry and lacked the caramelized bits we associate with fajitas
This difference in preparation could be a cultural variation
but it left us slightly confused about what to expect
especially in a market as saturated as Rio Linda’s
With established favorites like Taqueria Mi Lindo Apatzingan
and Xochimilco just a stone’s throw away
El Rinconsito De Jalisco faces an uphill battle
The recent arrival of The Grotto and a new sushi restaurant replacing Villa Fat
coupled with Rio Pub’s revamped menu and Creekside Diner’s seemingly upped game
The Verdict: A Promising Newcomer Needs Time to Shine
the Rio Linda community is ultimately the winner
with a wider array of dining options than ever before
While El Rinconsito De Jalisco may not have fully swayed us this time
The friendly atmosphere and flavorful ingredients offer a solid foundation
We plan to revisit El Rinconsito De Jalisco in three months
they can refine their offerings and become a more compelling contender in Rio Linda’s vibrant Mexican food scene
El Rinconsito De Jalisco is located in the old BG’s building at 6730 Rio Linda Blvd in Rio Linda
