and a River Oaks Patrol officer was injured after a shooting on Sunday in southwest Houston
Houston Police said this began with River Oaks Patrol Officers investigating a burglary at a home
They said a chase began on San Felipe and Bellmeade and ended behind River Oaks Elementary School
Homeowner Esfandiar Baharloo said the burglary was in progress at his home
“I saw a suspicious person on camera and immediately called River Oaks Patrol,” said Baharloo
Neighbors tell KPRC 2 they heard four to eight gunshots
“I heard bam bam bam,” said Madeleine Connor
who lives just a few houses down from where the shooting took place
“It’s really kind of scary to know that one of our great River Oaks Patrol guys was shot."
River Oaks Patrol is a 24/7 team of officers and dispatchers serving exclusively the River Oaks community and is funded by the residents
“River Oaks Patrol is very good,” said Connor
“My mother used to live in this house for 20 years by herself
comforting thing to have River Oaks Patrol always on top of it.”

(WPDE) — River Oaks Elementary went into a temporary lockdown on Wednesday afternoon
according to Lisa Bourcier with Horry County Schools
Bourcier said the school went into lockdown for about five minutes due to a community incident nearby
which is under investigation by Horry County Police

Levi Goode is ready to share more details about his plans to bring Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina to the River Oaks Shopping Center
both the restaurant and the bar should open in March
[Update 3/3: The restaurant announced it will open on Wednesday
An opening date for Bar Buena has not been set.]
The chef and restaurateur explains that part of the decision to open in River Oaks stems in part from the good-natured grief he’s been getting about the restaurant from regulars at his four establishments on Kirby Drive. They wanted to experience its food without having to drive to the Heights or Memorial
“Everybody is very territorial on where they live and eat,” Goode says
I’ve been getting lots of jokes about Credence and Kitchen and Cantina
‘Are you ever going to do this inside the loop?’ It was exciting we were able to secure a really iconic restaurant space and evolve it into Kitchen & Cantina.”
Turning La Griglia into Kitchen & Cantina requires extensive renovations
One that people will notice immediately is that the bar has been moved back a little bit to make it easier to enter the restaurant
A large tree in the middle of the dining room will emphasize its high ceilings
One element that will remain are the concrete pavers that local celebrities signed when the restaurant opened
Its a nod to the space’s history and as well as a bygone era of Houston restaurants
Just as Credence’s speakeasy Sidebar has a distinct feel from the main restaurant
Bar Buena will have a difference environment than Kitchen & Cantina
Occupying La Griglia’s former private dining room
the bar takes inspiration from Goode’s extensive travels throughout Mexico
including to places like Jalisco and Oaxaca
“Bar Buena is going to be a bit more refined than what we’ve done at Kitchen and Cantina,” he says
you’re going to get more a polished finish at Bar Buena
A place where we’ll be well suited for great hospitality with small bites
the food menu will be familiar to anyone who’s dined at Kitchen & Cantina’s existing locations

It’s never been easier to get an order of Nancy cakes or former Astros star Justin Verlander’s favorite Houston cheeseburger. Beginning this Monday, May 5, Nancy’s Hustle is now open for dinner seven days a week
Co-owner Sean Jensen tells CultureMap that he and his business partner
opted to add a seventh day of service for several reasons
“We often get complaints that it’s hard to get in
This opens up another day for people to sneak in.”
Indeed, the restaurant, which opened in the fall of 2017, has never been riding higher. Food & Wine recently named it one of the 15 best restaurants in America
based on a nationwide poll of restaurant workers
It also earned a coveted Bib Gourmand designation in the Michelin Guide
which Michelin describes as recognizing “restaurants that offer great quality food at good prices,” felt like the right award for Nancy’s
which has always prided itself on being a neighborhood restaurant with refined food and friendly
I would have thought they were wrong,” Jensen says
“I would have probably been offended if we’d only gotten a recommendation
I think we’re in the right place with a Bib Gourmand.”
The restaurant saw an immediate uptick in diners after the Michelin Guide’s list came out in November
particularly from visitors who wanted to patronize Bib Gourmand recipients
Being open on Monday allows the restaurant to serve diners who are either staying for a long weekend or flying in on Monday and looking for a good meal
regulars will notice a new face behind the bar
bartender Brandon Choate left Anvil for a new role as Nancy’s bar manager
He’ll also be working the floor some evenings
We love the changes he’s making and the new fresh set of eyes,” Jensen says
since many other restaurants are closed on Monday
being open on that day makes it easier for their peers in the hospitality industry to patronize Nancy’s Hustle
Monday service has been a success at like-minded peers such as Theodore Rex
which have always drawn restaurant workers on Monday evenings
Nancy’s makes itself particularly friendly to hospitality workers by seating people until 11 pm nightly
being open seven days also benefits the restaurant’s employees
Jensen explains that it became easier to be flexible with employees’ schedules at Tiny Champions — their EaDo restaurant devoted to pizza
and shareable plates — when that restaurant moved to daily service last summer
the restaurant wants to give all employees two consecutive days off
but that could sometimes get tricky when one of those days had to be Monday
“Instead of having to focus everyone’s two consecutive days as Sunday and Monday or Monday and Tuesday
we can mold days off that work better for them or for us,” he says
“it makes it easier for those employees who have family or significant others who work nine-to-fives
It’s easier to give them a Saturday or Sunday off when you’re on a seven-day schedule.”

The full build-out of the River Oaks Parkway will construct 737 units
including 637 apartments in three structures and a hundred townhomes
the team has exceeded the 15% affordable housing requirements per city code
there will be 130 affordable apartments ranging in size from 360 to 1,037 square feet
The market-rate apartments will be much larger
while the townhome residences will contain 1,230 to 1,790 square feet each
Parking will be included for 891 cars and 345 bicycles
Studio T Square is responsible for the design
The complex’s aesthetic is dedicated largely by the local development standards and design guidelines from the city’s general plan and zoning code
with three apartments rising between five to seven floors above semi-circular River Oaks Park and the hundred townhomes conforming to a triangular lot abutting Anza Road and Levee Road
The nearly ten-acre property is located in a relatively new neighborhood featuring the 1,750-unit Crescent Village Apartments masterplan built by the Irvine Company
Immediately next to 281 River Oaks Parkway is Aire Apartments
a 293-unit apartment complex by Pacific Development
Across from the site is the 2013-built River Oaks Park
once the site of a Sony manufacturing facility
211-281 River Oaks Parkway property outlined approximately by YIMBY
The city has recently published its notice of preparation for the draft Environmental Impact Report for the residential infill. The city will be encouraging the public to submit comments on the scope of the report from now through December 10th. For more information about how to participate, see the city’s website here
Preliminary permits had been filed last summer
utilizing Senate Bill 330 to streamline the approval process
the developer expects to start construction on the townhomes by November 2026
with apartments potentially starting in mid-2028

As impressive as the numbers may look on the surface
the developer is really only doing the minimum required for the zoning
They should consider removing the block of townhomes north of the market rate building and adding another apartment building there
Density would jump from 76/acre to 92+/acre
We must put scarce land with high zoning to a better use than this proposal
Look at how terrible the utilization of land is for that entire area
There’s an incredible amount of surface parking lot in San Jose
San Jose could easily be triple the population

What a splendid weekend it was when Bayou Bend House & Gardens opened for three fundraising events that saw ladies and a few gents lunching during a fashion fête on Friday
children and parents frolicking across the verdant gardens on Saturday
and a cotillion of primarily Houston old guard staples dining and dancing beneath a party tent on Sunday evening
The festivities brought in $1,275,000 million for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston house museum
The trio of spring garden parties celebrated the legacy of philanthropist Ima Hogg, who bequeathed her historic John Staub home (circa 1927) and surrounding 14 acres to the MFAH in 1957
Over the three days, the events centered on the gardens (alas the renowned azaleas had passed their prime) with the Bayou Bend Fashion Show and Luncheon hosting more than 200 for the Neiman Marcus Lela Rose presentation and City Kitchen lunch
Gillian Sarofim chaired the gathering that
attracted a clutch of fresh faces in the mix
Among them were Betsy Goodman, Lauren Gray, Lauren Reckling, Randa McConn, Hope Dorsett, Louisa Lummis, Christiana Elliot, Ellie Petit and Christiana Reckling. The Galleria once again served as principal underwriter for the luncheon
The annual Bayou Bend Children’s Party
attracted some 250 who joined in the activities which included “Mary’s Magic Bubbles,” “Face Paint Petals,” “Gentle Garden Creature” and “The Enchanted Workshop,” which included art making for the whole family
Sunday evening’s record-breaking Bayou Bend Garden Party found 325 supporters wining and dining on City Kitchen food and dancing to the sounds of Manhattan. The Events Company dressed the tent in splashes of lavender and green and profusions of florals. Adding to the success of this fundraiser was the principal underwriter position of Lugano
and dance duos included Nancy and Butch Abendshein

RELATED: Tickets to historic River Oaks Theatre’s first screening ahead of grand reopening going fast!
Most Houstonians have a strong connection or fond memory of the city’s oldest theater, and after news surfaced it would be shutting its doors for good
CLOSER LOOK: Inside the newly renovated River Oaks Theatre, Houston’s oldest and only art-house cinema
For the new owner, Omar Khan, CEO of Star Cinema Grill and Culinary Khancepts
there were so many reasons to get involved
One motivating factor was saving the theater where he and his wife shared one of their first dates in the late 90s to watch “Fight Club.” (Don’t worry
“We are a couple that went to a lot of movies
but there was something really special about this venue
I think the art deco eclectic vibe just had this certain atmosphere that really sucked you in,” he explained
“And you could see that everybody that worked in the venue really appreciated the art of film
and I think that that really showed that the passion was really behind the counter
And that’s what really set this theater apart from everybody else.”
Khan now describes his wife as his business partner and muse
because it wasn’t an easy task to keep the theater from closing its curtains for good
“The landlord was approached by many people who wanted to save the theater,” Khan admitted
It could be a mix of entrepreneurial passion combined with a genuine love for movie theaters
Khan’s father owned a movie theater in Houston that was one of the first cinemas (if not the absolute first) to play Indian films
It was there Khan told me he got his first start in the cinema industry
“My father wanted to bring Bollywood-style movies to the U.S.
and so I grew up in that theater running around the concession in the lobby and all those types of things as a young adult,” he said
I got the privilege to work alongside my father in the cinema industry.”
“I also had the privilege to work for some large organizations in the cinema work,” he continued
“And so my kind of passion came from all of that..
I worked in theaters during my college career as well
but it just kind of was running through my veins and so I always had the desire to be in the business myself.”
Combined with Khan and his wife’s shared love of films and entrepreneurial spirits
they were able to share that vision of an elevated experience and put seats back in the theater
“There was almost this obligation that felt like
we were the right ones to do that,” Khan said
“That obligation eventually turned into the desire to want to save it
And we were fortunate enough to work out a deal with the landlord that made economic sense for both sides and here we are today.”
For the last few years, there’s been a contentious debate on whether or not the movie theater industry is dying. An article by CNBC suggested they’re not dying
MORE: Movie theaters and streamers may end up friends, after all
Khan certainly shares that sentiment saying everyone wants to go out and enjoy themselves
so give them a reason to be glad they left the home
“You want to take your families out and you want to entertain them and you want to enjoy those emotions and feelings and all the things that we talked about that bring their highs and lows and make you feel alive within an immersive experience you can’t really get at home,” he explained
“The philosophy of how we program this theater has changed
we have a lot more diversity when it comes to programming—I think that we’ve always been pretty good at that
My wife and I collaborate on a lot of those things like bringing food and beverages to this venue
bringing live performances and comedy shows and events
The theater celebrated its grand opening on the first week of October
but even after just three weeks of it being open to the public—when this interview was conducted—Khan admitted it was all still a surreal experience
that I could feel how genuinely he cared about bringing back this theater and really believing in the vision he and his wife shared coming to life
“I won’t forget that we were probably 75% to 80% done with construction
I was here alone with my wife and we walked down the aisle way past the seats
we walked up to the stage and looking down from that stage into the auditorium and just seeing how beautiful this venue is
what it meant to this city and the fact that we were
MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS STORIES
“Sometimes I have to step out of my busy life of ‘What’s next?’ and ‘What are we doing?’ and ‘What are we working on?’ and ‘How do we get better?’ to appreciate that I think this venue definitely brought that to life for me,” Khan continued
“It almost makes me a bit emotional that I remember that feeling standing on the stage with my wife
just looking at what we’ve accomplished and what we’ve built and been really proud of that and that like I said
but it has a lot more to do with us as an organization and the team that we’re able to develop around us.”
and it’s hard to say what movies mean to me
But when my colleague and photojournalist Wladimir Moquete asked
Khan said it’s more than just moving pictures
my wife and I had this connection as we were dating and as we got married and we were young couples
it was probably the thing that we did every single weekend: we went to a movie
It means who I am today; I’ve got three beautiful kids and all these other venues that we have

River Oaks
She will speak at length about the perfect collard green brine to anyone who will listen
reopened its doors to Houston audiences Oct
Taking visual cues from the movie palaces of the 20th century
the new theatre now boasts three screening rooms
two in-house bars and a kitchen that serves food to guests.
Throughout October, the theatre screened new releases, including “Joker: Folie à Deux”
including films like “Mulholland Drive” and “Fight Club.” This new mixture of old favorites
modern arthouse and prestige studio releases is a breath of fresh air in the Houston cinema space
as few theatres near Rice consistently screen these types of films (the Museum of Fine Arts being a notable exception).
The theatre operated from 1939 to 2021 until it closed due to the pandemic
Arthouse Houston — previously known as Friends of River Oaks Theatre — started working to save the historic space and reinstate it back in the Houston film community.
co-founder and director of Arthouse Houston
said the original River Oaks was the core of Houston’s art film community
After beginning her career overseeing the River Oaks for Landmark Theatres
McNamara returned to help save the theater
after recognizing the establishment’s complex leasing situation
“There had been a long-standing desire of the real estate company that owned the River Oaks Shopping Center to redevelop [the River Oaks Theatre],” McNamara said
“The landlord had been renewing leases for short periods of time
so it was very hard for the people operating the business to invest in renovations and repairs.”
Weingarten Realty Investors were negotiating to raise the rent
further contributing to the initial closure of the business
“That doesn’t mean it wasn’t healthy or thriving,” McNamara said
it was easy just to use the opportunity to move on and get them to close the theatre.”
McNamara and other Houstonians recognized the problems and began to take action
“It was really clear that the theater was at risk
there were people who worked at the theatre
neighbors that came together to say ‘not on our watch’,” McNamara said
the Houston Mayor’s Office determined that the space should remain a theatre
a Houston-based company that operates a variety of restaurants
including Liberty Grill and the Star Cinema Grill
a chain of dine-in movie theaters in the greater Houston area
McNamara said that the Friends of River Oaks Theatre worked with the company after they signed the lease to the space in 2022.
“We wanted to make sure the idea of the theatre was never more than a beat away,” McNamara siad
Despite this newfound collaboration with Culinary Khancepts
the River Oaks Theatre is still committed to arthouse and cinema outside what you might find in the megaplex
according to artistic director Robert Saucedo.
“We always want to recognize that the River Oaks has historically been like a great place to see independent arthouse
so we were trying to keep on that and stay true to that,” Saucedo said
Saucedo also noted that the theatre’s approach may be philosophically the same in terms of film programming
but noted some key differences in terms of what is being shown.
“We will definitely keep bringing in big studio films wherever it makes sense and where they fit in with the general kind of philosophy,” Saucedo said
“We’re not probably ever going to play something like the new Avengers movie
but we would play a superhero film if it was directed by an auteur filmmaker
the River Oaks has found success in terms of capturing a new audience.
“I think the biggest surprise I’ve had is just how young our repertory audiences are,” Saucedo said
“The median age of the audience being probably 30 is great
because that’s the kind of audience that it’s important to nurture and support because they’re going to continue to continue to support the theater in the years to come.”
Saucedo said he hopes to continue to engage audiences with the programming offered.
“Students at Rice who want to see a certain movie or want to see certain types of programming: reach out and let us know
We’ll continue to tailor the programming at River Oaks to fit what people are interested in watching,” Saucedo said
McNamara said the cinema experience is completely unlike watching at home.
“I challenge anyone to watch the same movie on their [small] screen and then go see it at the River Oaks and have the same experience they had the first time,” McNamara said
“When you’re in the dark and completely surrounded
with a community of people or other people you’re with
you have shared emotional peaks and valleys and wonder that you’re experiencing together

“Serves & Spurs” — what a theme for the annual US Men’s Clay Court Championship ladies luncheon at River Oaks Country Club
On the heels of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
Tootsies’ annual fashion presentation embraced the spring River Oaks tennis tournament while giving a retro nod to styles that will surely be seen 2026 at the Rodeo’s posh Wine Garden or The Ranch Saloon & Steakhouse
The two-day al fresco fashion frolic reigns at the top of the heap for seeing and being seen each spring in Houston with a good portion of the 650 daily attendees doubling up requiring back-to-back dressing up
A number accessorized their spring frocks with Western hats and/or boots in salute to the spurs while others went for that ubiquitous Zimmerman flouncy skirt
Thank you to those who stepped away from froufrou and into lawn party sophistication
the luncheon is held on the immaculate country club lawn overlooking the golf course
the tennis courts an errant out-of-bounds serve away
It was so windy on both days that the ribbon canopies which provided shade had to be re-secured several times over
it was so windy that skirts flew skyward revealing interesting selections of undergarments
With some 80 looks to choose from ranging from Naeem Khan to Oscar de la Renta from Valentino to Nini Ricci
ladies found the on-site shopping opportunity a welcome exercise
A highlight of the luncheon in recent years is the flower-bedecked Annie Cafe & Bar caviar cart where executive chef emeritus Robert Del Grande welcomes those in need of a taste treat
