Shortly after getting a commitment from Idaho transfer Tyler Mrus, BYU is looking to add additional ball handling and shooting in the backcourt to fill out the roster
UC Riverside guard Nate Pickens is currently on a visit to BYU right now
Pickens arrived to Provo Thursday and leaves Friday
The 6-foot-3 combo guard spent his first three seasons at UCR
averaging over 9 points in each of the last two seasons
and 2.1 assists on 40% shooting from the floor
Pickens shot 47-120 from three and just under half of his attempts were from distance
Pickens can also create his own shot off the dribble and finish above the rim
BYU is looking to add one additional ball handler
and Pickens fits that mold as someone that can play either the point or two guard spot
BYU played UC Riverside earlier this season
and Pickens scored 18 points on 6-10 shooting versus the Cougars in a close game
Nate will be a senior this upcoming season
he would likely get run as a backup point guard behind Rob Wright who can also play off the ball as a secondary ball handler

the Hudson-side path in Riverside Park is back—repaved
the beloved 1.25-mile stretch of the Hudson River Greenway between West 100th and 125th Streets in Riverside Park
is officially reopening this weekend after an eight-month-long closure—and just in time for the tail end of cherry blossom season
Closed since last September, the scenic riverside route underwent a long-overdue makeover
including repaving areas damaged by tree roots and adding new
clearly marked lanes to better separate cyclists from pedestrians
park-goers were forced to detour from the water and climb stairs just to keep moving uptown
“I used to train for marathons there,” cyclist Marteen Vandersman told The Spirit
the first outlet to report on the reopening
“It’s the best place for it.”
Cherry Walk’s return was delayed by final safety inspections and finishing touches on the lane markings
“It’s frustrating because it’s been closed for so long,” one West Side walker told the neighborhood publication
Despite the hiccups, the reopening brings renewed access to one of Manhattan’s most peaceful pockets—a riverside respite where the breeze cuts through city noise and, yes, the cherry trees bloom in springtime glory. The trees, gifted to the city in 1912 by the Committee of Japanese Residents, are a key reason Cherry Walk made our list of the best places to see cherry blossoms in NYC
With the path’s upgrade, the city promises a safer, more user-friendly experience without losing the historic charm that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux envisioned
Cherry Walk is back—and we couldn't be happier about it
The path was closed in September 2024 for repaving and safety upgrades
and the city aimed to improve accessibility by adding new lane markings to separate cyclists and pedestrians
Cherry Walk is expected to reopen the weekend of May 3
following final inspections and completion of all pavement markings

When Carl Maronich arrived at Riverside Healthcare in 2006 as the director of communications and marketing, he did not have a set timeline as to how long he would be at the site.
He could never have imagined his largely behind-the-scenes stay would have lasted until mid-2025, for a total of 19 years.
The 63-year-old Maronich will end his Riverside career May 16. A farewell party celebrating Maronich’s Kankakee-based career was held Friday at Hoppy Pig.
A former newspaperman with Shaw Media and the Dixon Telegraph, where he served as a reporter and then a city editor, evolved into a career in the healthcare industry.
Following his news career, Maronich transitioned into a communication position at Dixon’s Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital, a post he held for 14 years before planting his roots in Kankakee and Riverside.
Maronich had no idea his stay in Kankakee would be his final stop in the world of being a spokesman.
He did note that when he came on board at Riverside, the marketing department featured a staff of four. It now has a staff of eight.
“I didn’t think it would be this long. Phil (Kambic, Riverside’s president and CEO) had just taken over as CEO. I don’t know if I had in my mind it would be this long, but I’m grateful it was. It’s been a great run.”
Maronich had been contemplating this move for about a year. He moved to Oak Park three years ago and commuting for the Downers Grove North High School and Marycrest College (of Davenport, Iowa) graduate has been a grind.
Between his professional duties and the wide range of community activities, including the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra board and a WKAN Saturday morning radio show, Maronich has also forged his way into the world of entertainment.
In 2021, he earned a Fine Arts master’s degree as a playwright from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He has already penned a handful of plays. He describes this chapter of his life as something of a “different challenge.”
“I don’t know if it’s lucrative. I’m starting to get some traction. I’ve always been interested in writing,” he said.
Maronich is hopeful this will be a smooth transition for all.
Riverside officials have found a replacement for Maronich. The administration has not yet released the name. They stated they don’t want to take away from Maronich’s celebration.
Maronich is not sure how the final two weeks of his Riverside career will be marked. He did make one declaration.
“I’m not sure I’m going to get much done on the last day,” he said.
“I’ve really been blessed to have such a great team around me,” Maronich said.”
Momence will soon have one fewer dining option.
The family-owned Pizza Stone Express restaurant at 119 W. Washington St., Momence, will be closing its doors May 31.
The establishment did not renew its liquor license at the end of April in anticipation of the closing.
The restaurant’s ownership announced its decision in an April 26 Facebook post.
Father-son duo Avelino and Eric Vela took over Pizza Stone Express in February 2017, according to its website.
“It has been a true honor to be able to serve this wonderful community for the past 8 years,” Eric Vela said in the post. “Many deciding factors have went into this and it was not an easy decision by any means. I want to thank each and every one of you for the support over the past 8 years, it has been an incredible journey.”
The owners are encouraging customers to come in by the end of the month and use any gift cards.
With warmer weather upon us, it’s a great time to dine outside in Kankakee. Outdoor dining is now available at 5 Star Wings at 125 W. Station St. in Kankakee.
Owner-operator Troy Clark added outdoor decks on each side of his front entrance that were completed Monday.
“My seating goes from 48 to 78 [patrons],” Clark said.
The decks come with benches so diners can sit and enjoy the outdoors while savoring the wings, chicken, ribs, sandwiches, fish and a variety of side dishes.
Clark said the decks were built by his longtime friend, Nelson Sims, a former Kankakee resident who now lives in California.
“He used to build houses around here,” Clark said. “He and his father, they built like nice houses. He still has family around here.”
5 Star Wings has been at its current location for five years, after three years at a storefront on Court Street.
The decks still need some finishing touches, including signage on the front, facing Station Street.
The restaurant is open every day, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The menu has a variety of southern cooking, including deep-fried Cajun catfish or the perfection of Cajun chicken dinners, catfish nuggets, pork chops and ribeye steaks.

“I’ve never gone hunting in my life,” he said
“I like golf and to just hang out with friends.”
but on the field the Riverside seniors are a lot alike
Both are hard-throwing right-handers for one of the WPIAL’s premier programs and form what is arguably the top duo of starting pitchers in the area and one of the best in the entire state
Dan Oliastro has been coaching at Riverside for 57 seasons and has had quite a few standout pitchers over the years
but even “Coach O” doesn’t recall having a tandem quite like this
has hit 97 mph on the radar gun this season
“Nothing like the velocity we’re seeing now,” Oliastro said
but Lucarelli and Hare also understand how to pitch
The two are a combined 8-2 this season and are striking out an average of more than two batters an inning
This 1a and 1b have played giant roles for a Riverside team that is 13-2 and won the Class 3A Section 1 title
They’ve helped the Panthers amass a record of 54-5 since their sophomore season
The pair has helped the Panthers give up only 23 runs in 15 games
Only twice has the team given up more than two runs in a game
The story of Lucarelli and Hare is kind of like “The Tortoise and the Hare” in that Lucarelli burst onto the scene quickly as a freshman while Hare’s development was a little slower as he didn’t begin pitching heavily for Riverside until his junior season
Hare emerged as one of the WPIAL’s top pitchers last season when he went 9-1 with 86 strikeouts in 44 innings
Hare is 5-1 with a 1.41 ERA and has struck out 72 compared to just seven walks in 34⅔ innings
Opponents are hitting just .119 against him
Lucarelli said he loves watching Hare pitch and believes the two are the area’s top duo of starters
He’s been going five-plus innings almost every start
and I think that’s definitely helped set the tone.”
Major League scouts have been flocking to Riverside games to check out Lucarelli
“For an 18-year-old to be on the mound and he’s got five guys standing behind the screen with radar guns
He’s struck out 58 and walked 22 in 27⅓ innings while limiting opponents to a .092 batting average
“It’s good because I feel like on one team
We just push each other and that’s how you just keep on getting better.”
Hare and Lucarelli get the most work on the mound
But there’s another standout senior pitcher on the team
another Slippery Rock recruit who’s 2-1 with two saves and a 1.29 ERA
evidenced by him striking out 29 and walking only two in 16⅓ innings
“Him being able to come in back-to-back days to pitch and close it out for us
Every single time we know the same results are going to happen
And it’s huge for me and Christian because we come in
righties really over the top throwing harder
and then Hunter comes in submarine kind of from the left side
he has ice in his veins and throws nothing but strikes,” Oliastro added
Hare and Garvin have some impressive career numbers
The three are a combined 47-8 and have struck out 594 in 321 innings
All three have also been terrific at the plate for a Riverside team that is averaging nine runs per game
is hitting a team-best .486 and has 16 RBIs
Hare is batting .423 with team highs of four home runs and 24 RBIs
Riverside will be eyeing WPIAL and PIAA titles when the postseason gets underway next week
After becoming the first WPIAL team to win a PIAA title with a perfect record in 2023
the Panthers were upended by Avonworth in last year’s WPIAL Class 3A final before seeing their season end with a loss in the first round of the PIAA playoffs
The Panthers have won six WPIAL titles and their five PIAA titles are two more than any other WPIAL school
“That would be a dream to go off with a ring
To end with a championship like that would mean the world to pretty much everybody.”

Western Nebraska’s only zoo is celebrating a milestone coming up this weekend
known originally as Riverside Park and Zoo in Scottsbluff is reaching it’s 75th Anniversary this year and a full party is on deck Saturday
It began in the 1950s simply as a small collection of native animals and waterfowl housed in basic enclosures on the banks of the North Platte River in Scottsbluff
Volunteers and donations pioneered the early development of the park through the 50s’
Donations and support from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission allowed the expansion of the zoo
Department of Agriculture advised improvements
and after a supportive community came together to raise funds
the organization was able to build a primate structure in 1976
financial uncertainy threatened the well-being of Riverside Zoo
A survey confirmed that residents valued the zoo resulting in the City of Scottsbluff allocating funds in 1986 to hire professional staff
It was under Pierce’s leadership that the zoo gained it’s accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 1990
That was the same year the zoo saw incredible expansion
With voter approved funding between 1991 and 1993
the zoo built a chimpanzee conservation complex
A walk-through aviary was established in 1997 along with a Nebraska Threatened and Endangered Species kiosk
and renovated buildings such as the chimp house and primate facilities
the Riverside Zoological Foundation merged with the Children’s University and the Wildlife World Natural History Museum
The organization then became known as the Riverside Discovery Center with $350,000 support from the City of Scottsbluff each year for ten years
RDC opened the Heritage Barn and petting zoo and built a new playground
It also expanded the Species Survival Plan to 16 species
The celebration this Saturday happens all day starting at 9:30 a.m.
Admission is free and fun for the whole family until 4
and Jared Fernau will be there performing his magic show
it’s a beer garden and band by Richard Castro and Donny O and DJ S3NSVTION until 9 p.m
Texas — Austin police are investigating a homicide near downtown Thursday night
The incident occurred at 2001 East Riverside Drive
when Austin Police responded to a shoot/stab hotshot call at the Shell gas station
they located a 30-40-year-old Hispanic male that had trauma to the body
Austin-Travis County EMS as well as the Austin Fire Department performed life-saving measures
but the victim was pronounced deceased at 7:21 p.m
One person of interest is cooperating in the investigation
Police say the incident occurred as a result of a disturbance between two people
the relationship of these people is unknown
Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the homicide tip line at 512-477-3588
They can also contact Austin Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477
located between 100th and 125th streets in Riverside Park
underwent a long-awaited reconstruction and was slated to reopen on the weekend of May 3
The work focused on repaving sections damaged by tree roots and adding new pavement markings to separate pedestrians and cyclists with clearly delineated paths
While the eight-month project was underway
bikers and walkers were forced to veer away from the Hudson River to a route that involved climbing steps and no view of the water
The 1.25-mile Cherry Walk is not just another part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway: It’s a vital public space and a treasured escape for many city dwellers
Riverside Park is one of eight natural landmark spaces within the city
When the city originally announced the project
especially the completion of safety markings
and the community’s patience began to wear thin
Residents and park-goers started to voice their frustration
“I thought it would be open by now,” said Rick W.
“It’s the first time I’ve come since last year
“It’s frustrating because it’s been closed for so long
I understand there may be engineering concerns
maybe something with the highway nearby—but still
Others acknowledged the improvements while still lamenting the inconvenience
It’s really nice that there are fewer bikers on the other paths now
but it’s frustrating it’s a longer detour for walkers.”
“I’m not surprised at all,” said another West Side resident
“It doesn’t seem like anything has changed since they repaved it
Everyone’s blaming each other; bureaucracy is overburdening everything with inspections
the police don’t do anything about the accidents that happen.”
I used to train for marathons there—it’s the best place for it
I guess I’ll just stick to Central Park for now.”
The message was clear: People missed Cherry Walk
“We want it open as soon as possible,” a group of regular walkers told the Spirit
with the river beside us and the cherry trees in bloom.”
And now the idyllic stretch is ready to be enjoyed again
retaining a natural beauty that was carefully cultivated starting 150 years ago
renowned co-designer of Central and Prospect parks
was retained by the city in 1873 and submitted a plan in 1875 combining park and parkway into a synthesized landscape “which adhered to the general topographical contours of hill and dale,” according to the Parks Department website
park designs developed under a succession of landscape architects
including Olmsted’s partner Calvert Vaux and Samuel Parsons
The full Riverside Park was planned as a grand English-style rustic park stretching four miles from 72nd Street
From joggers training for marathons to families out for weekend walks
Cherry Walk serves thousands of New Yorkers year-round
The distinctive cherry blossom trees on Cherry Walk came about 40 years after Riverside Park officially opened
a gift from the Committee of Japanese Residents
one that retains its charm but is better suited to the volume and diversity of users it attracts
or simply looking for a tranquil place to breathe
Just in time to catch the latter half of the cherry-blossom season
which started in March and stretches through May

ELLWOOD CITY— Riverside softball catcher Charlie Bissell’s high school softball career was a process that led her to where she is today
While the four-year letter winner has found success throughout her high school career
Bissell had to pave her path to starting at her primary position behind the plate and emerge as one of the key leaders on the team
After producing as the team’s designated hitter early in her high school career
the senior emerged as a natural leader during off-season workouts
“She earned that spot behind the plate because of the way that she leads and commands the team,” Riverside head coach Geri Lynn Cummings said
she immediately stepped up and started to lead the team
Whether it was doing stretches or getting the younger girls involved with how we do certain things
it is nice to see her step into the leadership role naturally because she learned it from the players above her and when it was her turn
Required Reading: Beaver Valley high school softball notebook: Pitchers impress in the circle
accepting a role as a designated hitter and waiting for an opportunity might be hard for some
Bissell took that opportunity in stride and got to work making the most of it
helping her grow into the player that she is today
“I needed to have patience in those moments and I knew that as long as I continued to work and produce in the role that I was in
I would be able to be where I am now,” Bissell said
Bissell has found her voice within the team and she has gained respect from her fellow seniors and underclassmen
Building the relationships with the roster has been a rewarding experience for Bissell
who takes a different approach than most upperclassmen
“Whenever you have older players on the team
sometimes they will try and put the younger girls in their place,” Bissell said
“I like to think that we have more of a friendship than anything
I love to build strong relationships with the younger players.”
With the way that the senior helps lead the team
Cummings knows that it is only helping set a precedent for the underclassmen that will soon be in that role in the coming years
“Charlie is making the footprints for the players behind her,” Cummings said
“It is one of those things that what she is doing now will translate to the other players behind her and will set the program up for the future.”
Bissell has also handled the bat well this year
coming up in clutch situations collecting six hits and seven RBIs in eight games this season helping the team stack together wins
Bissell has spent time in a practice setting and away from the team working on her swing and continuing to get better each day
which Cummings attributes to the way that she is able to produce in pressure-filled situations
“She understands the importance of putting in the work during the offseason and time outside of playing games,” Cummings said
“It has given her a chance to stay fresh and not get rusty
I look at the bad swings that you have in the offseason and that they will turn into good swings during the regular season.”
7-4 WPIAL 2A-I) will look to continue to stack together strong games with its balanced roster looking to put together a deep playoff run in 2025
we just need to continue to put in the time during practices that we have all year
We also not getting in our heads too much regarding which teams we could be facing in the playoffs,” Bissell said

Today (April 23rd) we celebrate a rare milestone—David Muñoz
longtime San Antonio radio personality and devoted golfer
marks exactly 60 years since his very first round of golf
Even more special: that first round was played at Riverside Golf Course
where he returns today to honor the occasion
We sat down with David to reminisce about that first round
and the lifelong connection he’s had with golf and Riverside
ACGT: So your first round of golf was here at Riverside
so he knew he would be able to pay for the round at the turn
It was nine holes that were 100 yards or less along with two par fours
I was only 11 and did not think about saving things at the time
so I don’t have a copy of that scorecard
But I do know that it was a 111 and I was very happy to play with my father.”
ACGT: That was before the back nine opened across the river
They didn’t open the nine holes on the south side of the river until 1973
ACGT: Do you remember what clubs you used back then
But I do remember I made a birdie on what’s now the par five 12th hole
I also birdied number six on the front side
ACGT: How has your game changed over the years
Any advice for golfers who want that same kind of longevity
I always go back to what Jimmy Valvano said: ‘Don’t give up
Only one person knows what I’ll shoot today
But I’m playing today in my father’s honor.”
ACGT: Do you still feel his presence when you’re playing
I recall in 2003 my first trip to New York
it was called the Major League Baseball game of the week
I took my first trip to New York with my wife Betty
I feel his presence whenever I’m playing golf.”
ACGT: What does golf mean to you after all these years
It’s about looking forward to the next shot
because my father introduced the game to me way back when
I’ve had the pleasure of having played so many courses
He and I made a pact in 2010 to do what we could to take the golf trip every year
We played several of the famous courses all over the country as well
and it has been an honor to be able to take those golf trips with him
factor or it could be a very frustrating factor but you got to do your best to do what you can to play your best game.”
ACGT: You’ve had an impressive radio career as well
What’s that been like alongside your golf life
I host Smooth Jazz San Antonio on 101.9 HD2 and fill in on the golf show on Ticket 760
I’ve also been in advertising sales for 24 years
ACGT: What’s your first thought when you arrive at Riverside today
This course has always held a special place in my heart
I remember during my father’s funeral procession
It was like he got one more visit to the course
The old number 16 was one of the most disliked holes in San Antonio
It’s a gift to still have this course here on the south side.”
David’s story is more than a walk down memory lane
it’s a heartfelt reminder of golf’s power to connect generations
we’re honored that his journey began and continues right here on the Alamo City Golf Trail

— A portion of Riverside Drive will be closed until further notice due to a sinkhole that collapsed a section of the road Friday morning in Battle Creek
as city crews were wrapping up sewer repair work
Engineering Administrator for the City of Battle Creek
said crews were notified of a blocked pipe around 10 p.m
we don't have a 24 inch [pipe] get clogged because they're so large
I knew something unusual had happened."
Crews believe it was already hollowed out from the pipe collapsing
and the weight of the car caused it to crumble
“I drive that route daily two or three times daily," Kelly Cariuty
"Never in a million years would think that you would just find a big
The collapsed section measured about 25 by 20 feet wide
and nearly 15 feet deep -- nearly double the depth of a standard swimming pool
“I don't know how you would gauge something like that," Cariuty said
That's the funny thing because you could just be sitting there in the ground could just collapse.”
Crews have been on-site and working on repairs most of the day Friday
but said they aren't sure how long repairs will take until they know the full extent of the damage

chemists generate unstable molecule in water
Chemists have confirmed a 67-year-old theory about vitamin B1 by stabilizing a reactive molecule in water — a feat long thought impossible
The discovery not only solves a biochemical mystery
more efficient ways of making pharmaceuticals.
a type of carbon atom with only six valence electrons
carbon is stable with eight electrons around it
it is chemically unstable and highly reactive
may form a carbene-like structure in our cells to carry out vital reactions in the body
Now, for the first time, researchers have not only generated a stable carbene in water, they’ve also isolated it, sealed it in a tube, and watched it stay intact for months. This discovery is documented in a paper published last week in Science Advances.
“This is the first time anyone has been able to observe a stable carbene in water,” said Vincent Lavallo
a professor of chemistry at UC Riverside and corresponding author of the paper
a Columbia University chemist who proposed in 1958 that vitamin B1 could convert into a carbene to drive biochemical transformations in the body
but carbenes were so unstable — especially in water — that no one could prove they actually existed in a biological setting
Lavallo’s team succeeded by wrapping the carbene in what he calls “a suit of armor,” a molecule they synthesized in the laboratory that shields the reactive center from water and other molecules
The resulting structure is stable enough to be studied with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography — providing conclusive evidence that carbenes like this can exist in water
“We were making these reactive molecules to explore their chemistry
not chasing a historical theory,” said first author Varun Raviprolu
who completed the research as a graduate student at UCR and is now a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA
“But it turns out our work ended up confirming exactly what Breslow proposed all those years ago.”
Beyond confirming a biochemical hypothesis
Carbenes are often used as “ligands,” or support structures
in metal-based catalysts — the chemical workhorses used to produce pharmaceuticals
Most of these processes rely on toxic organic solvents
The researchers’ method of stabilizing carbenes in water could help make those reactions cleaner
“Water is the ideal solvent — it’s abundant
and environmentally friendly,” Raviprolu said
“If we can get these powerful catalysts to work in water
that’s a big step toward greener chemistry.”
Knowing that such reactive intermediate molecules can be generated and survive in water also brings scientists one step closer to mimicking the kind of chemistry that happens naturally in cells — which are mostly made of water
“There are other reactive intermediates we’ve never been able to isolate
who has spent two decades designing carbenes
the moment is both professional and personal
people thought these molecules couldn’t even be made,” he said
What Breslow said all those years ago — he was right.”
the discovery serves as a reminder to persevere in scientific research and discovery.
“Something that seems impossible today might be possible tomorrow
if we continue to invest in science,” he said
