James Taylor flip side plus a pair of holiday songs he recorded with Halley Neal Your album reminds me of the early ‘70s singer-songwriter era when prerecorded cassettes were a relatively new format where the deal was twelve songs for a penny if you agree to purchase twelve more at regular club prices over the next two years including James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon which is where I learned “You Can Close Your Eyes,” the song used as the flip side of “You’ve Got a Friend.” A live version of that song is also the finale on James Taylor’s 2007 live album I had a similar experience to your Columbia Record Club membership There was this pack of CDs I bought when I was twelve and it included that album which was my introduction to a lot of James Taylor’s songs I didn’t know the original versions of those songs for a long time The One Man Band album has his crystal-clear guitar with Larry Goldings joining him on piano James Taylor’s “You Can Close Your Eyes” is a great example of what inspired me for my new album I have done albums before with a full band but I wanted this album’s focus to be mainly a guy and a guitar which is what is so compelling about James Taylor’s album Fabulous Flip Side: You Can Close Your Eyes “James Taylor’s ‘You Can Close Your Eyes’ is a great example of what inspired me for my new album which is what is so compelling about James Taylor’s album.” – Sam Robbins Available from Shamus Music on vinyl GM: Your album opens with “Piles of Sand,” where I hear the storytelling influence of James Taylor “I thought it was a mountain” in the chorus I thought of their breakthrough song “Closer to Fine.” SR: “Piles of Sand” definitely has the sparkling guitar and piano sound that I wanted to recreate from James Taylor’s One Man Band album Sonically it is like a clear blue lake to start off the album GM: You shift to more of a full band sound with “What a Little Love Can Do” with Rob Griffith’s drums in addition to your guitar and Seth Glier’s piano “Whatever world I wanna live in begins with me.” SR: Seth suggested starting the song with piano and making it fuller I was so pleased how the bridge came together “I wanna believe in something bigger than me.” GM: There is a great build on “People Gonna Talk” leading to the ending message of encouragement “I think it’s your time to sail on because you know what to do Keep on shining through and one day people gonna talk about you.” You went from insecurity and uncertainty in the beginning to motivational power at the end I received a lot of bad advice when I was younger and I took everybody’s opinions as gospel Now I encourage people younger than me to trust themselves “So Much I Still Don’t See,” is filled with imagery “Stuck in line behind Gladys at the grocery store smiling as she showed me a new doll for her granddaughter hair curly,” and filled with compassionate racial difference awareness SR: This song was difficult to write because of the imagery I had a variety of scenes written out and some I had to cut because I didn’t want to beat the listener over the head on race your fiancé Halley’s harmonies sweeten out the sound on the new album I also love the work the two of you did together on the holiday album You & Me on Christmas Eve “Better This Way” reflects on the early lean years of a family at Christmas SR: I wrote that song long before Halley and I were together and she was releasing a Christmas album with her band and she asked me to write a song for the album This was another time when I was inspired by James Taylor trying to imagine him writing a Christmas song I think back to those times when we were working hard and hanging out in Boston Singing that song every Christmas with her is such a great experience for me you two recorded a wonderful version of Peter Paul & Mary’s “Light One Candle,” written by my brother David’s friend Peter Yarrow Halley and I wanted to have three-part harmonies so it was great being surrounded by their wonderful voices and it was hard finding a good Jewish song to put on the album I didn’t want to sing about a dreidel To reference another favorite song of mine from your new album may you “Live Them in Love.” We appreciate that and thank you for making today’s session so much fun samrobbinsmusic.com jamestaylor.com goldminemag.com/columns/fabulous-flip-sides our leading industry insights View all newsletters from across the GlobalData Media network You might reckon Milwaukee is historically a polka kind of town but a new trend is rolling like a tumbleweed across the city country line-dancing is shuffling across the area like a grape vine.  There seems to be a dispute on how many hoedowns this town can handle Paul Robbins, creator of Robbins’ Roundup a “honky tonk takeover,” is of the strong opinion that there is plenty of room His Roundup night takes place regularly at Riverwest’s Falcon Bowl and Bay View’s Club Garibaldi Admission to the night includes line-dancing lessons followed by a set by Robbins’ honky tonk band who sing boot scootin’ tunes like “Everything’s Bigger in Texas.” Robbins says the goal of creating the event was to provide a fun time “Our crowd is new to it and casual I would say,” Robbins says He wants the event to appeal to those who are curious and might be intimidated by not knowing the moves “I went to a Texas two-step night once and no one would dance with me so I could learn because they were all too good for a beginner.” Robbins began hosting the Roundup late last summer Everything was going as smooth as a buzzard gliding on a lazy breeze but then Robbins’ dance instructor (we ain’t gonna name names) said he felt pressure from another line-dancing group he trucked with The group felt he was horning in on their territory and feeling about as low as a rattlesnake belly Convoy’s drummer decided it was time to skedaddle Robbins thought the Roundup’s goose might be cooked An anonymous source says the group that had a bee in their bonnet is Redd’s Line Up the group’s namesake (“I only go by Redd”) flatly denies it “I had a crush on a boy who liked country music,” she explains A DJ eventually took her under his wing and she started Redd’s Line Up with a dance team of about ten a little over two years ago developing a following with her weekly events: Tuesdays at Shotzy’s in Oconomowoc a beginner class Wednesdays at the Oak Creek Community Center and another open dancing night Thursdays at Shotzy’s II in West Allis as well as regular nights at Kelly’s Bleachers II in Wind Lake Water Street’s Red Rock Saloon and other locales At a recent Sunday evening at Red Rock Saloon shouted stomping orders into a mic from the DJ booth as an energetic blast of fiddles and banjos played through the speakers put ‘em up!” Redd instructed as the crowd moved side to side “Line-dancing has taken off like wildfire,” Redd says “I got to give a lot of credit to TikTok.” Redd says there are a few other line-dancing groups in Southeastern Wisconsin and that “there’s always drama with groups like this.” She mentions that she knows of at least one other instructor that she’s heard dislikes her I don’t know if it’s territorial stuff or if people feel threatened he was able to find a replacement instructor and says Convoy will find a new drummer or will switch in guest bands He’s got a long string of Friday nights booked at Club Garibaldi and is working on Falcon Bowl dates And if that ain’t enough, there’s a new line-dance night just two hoots and a holler across the street from Club Garibaldi at Cactus Club, the Slap Leather Saloon Queer Line Dance Night both Robbins and this group agree that Wentworth Avenue is big enough for the both of them the night was created to be safe space for the LGBTQ+ community who hosts the event with dance instructor Collin O’Brien with a second installment scheduled for May 22 and after that it’ll be a quarterly hootenanny “Line-dancing has a really rich history in the queer LGBTQ+ space it’s been a safe haven,” Henderson explains “People could just come and be themselves and meet other people.”  Henderson attended a “queer farming convergence” where one of the activities was line-dancing She had a blast and got hooked on the idea more spaces where we can have fun and forget about everything going on,” Anderson says And with the garshdern world in the state it is that just might be the best thing line-dancing provides Redd or the Slap Leather Saloon: it’s a chance to dance those ever lovin’ worldly blues away May 1, You’re juggling a demanding job search and an increasingly heavy mental load no one prepared you for the effortless social life we once had evaporated hanging out with friends requires a Google Calendar invite and a level of energy we desperately wish for but don’t always have I thought this was just a personal problem If you’ve found yourself panic-googling “cheap Mother’s Day gifts” at the eleventh hour CVS has a lineup of under-$25 gifts that are thoughtful and look way more expensive than they actually are In a recent interview with Jay Shetty and again on her podcast motivational speaker and author Mel Robbins shared a simple yet powerful explanation for why it’s so difficult to make and keep friends as adults Her theory instantly struck a chord with me it has changed the way I think about relationships altogether I’m sharing Mel’s refreshing perspective on adult friendship including her advice for making friends at any age “There is a massive shift that happens in adult friendship when you hit 20,” Robbins explains “and no one sees this coming.” As kids and young adults we’re constantly surrounded by people our age doing the same things at the same time dorm life—you were all in the same season of life and around each other constantly “Your entire childhood set up the conditions for friendship,” she says Robbins explains that we “expected” friendship to happen With every transition in my life came a new group of friends, all the way through college. But eventually, that traditional structure fell apart. People move away—myself included. Life timelines scatter between engagements, children, and career changes I’ll actually never forget the gut-wrenching feeling of watching my most active college group chat go quiet We went from sending memes and updating each other on the most mundane parts of our lives to missing birthdays and major milestones altogether But what actually happened is structural: The environment for friendship disappeared Making and keeping connections isn’t so black and white as adults three essential pillars need to be aligned to have thriving adult friendships and we have to work at them in a way we aren’t familiar with There are “three pillars of adult friendship,” according to Robbins: proximity Understanding these explains why friendships fade and change over time as well as how to create new ones proactively I was able to release my vice-grip on my old relationships and welcome the opportunity for new ones which is why they are worth breaking down in their entirety Robbins defines proximity as physical closeness “This matters way more than you think,” she says citing research that shows it takes 50 hours to become a casual friend and 200 to become a close friend it’s hard to log the time required for a real connection When you’re no longer in school or living with friends that kind of time together doesn’t happen by accident “The number one predictor of friendship is how often you see people,” Robbins explains “You have to physically be around people to become friends.” That’s why moving or even just working remotely can so deeply affect your social life But it does create a large barrier that can seriously affect a friendship the distance isn’t emotional; it’s just the fact that your lives have diverged,” she says This pillar made me think deeply about a specific friendship of mine that came to a standstill pretty suddenly. There wasn’t a big falling out, and I racked my brain for months trying to figure out what I did to push her away I didn’t do anything—our priorities simply don’t align right now Energy is how it feels when you’re around someone, and often, that energy changes based on the two pillars above. “Do you feel safe, supported, and understood?” Robbins asks. “Energy is one of those things you can’t fake.” You might have the same job or live in the same building, but if the emotional vibe between you isn’t clicking There have been multiple occasions in recent years where every circumstance should have set me up for a wonderful friendship with someone… and it just didn’t happen Robbins emphasizes that trying to force chemistry especially if proximity or timing is also misaligned Don’t try to twist yourself into someone else’s rhythm.” As a recovering people pleaser Letting a ~vibe~ be off isn’t really in my wheelhouse “Pay close attention to the energy that your friendships bring and nurture the ones that make you feel seen.” And if a friendship feels strained or starts to fade it’s often because one of these pillars has shifted Let’s recall Robbins’ classic theory: “Let them.” When it comes to our friends, we have to “Let them live their lives. Let them change. Let them meet new friends Robbins compares friendship to a rubber band: Given the correct combination of the three pillars This visual has made it so much easier to accept the different seasons of my friendships and I don’t need to take the change so personally and match their effort—whether big or small or none at all So, what do we do when we need to make new friends finding and keeping meaningful friendships as an adult starts with a mindset shift: We have to stop waiting for it to happen and start building it on purpose This is based on her experience with meeting some of her best friends in her 50s This mindset shift encourages taking action and looking for alignment in the three pillars be the one to say hello at your Pilates class Seek out people in a similar life stage as you because timing doesn’t just ease logistics; it shapes your emotional compatibility Pay close attention to the energy that your friendships bring and nurture the ones that make you feel seen The only certainty we all have in life is change so instead of viewing that with resistance embrace the opportunities that can come your way Allow new connections to form and give them the space to grow into something real Sydney Cox is a Chicago-based writer and intimacy coordinator who is passionate about exploring the complexities of human connections and teaching readers to advocate for themselves Sydney’s work has been featured in various publications where they aim to foster open and honest conversations Exclusive content delivered straight to your inbox SAN DIEGO, May 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The law firm of Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP announces that purchasers or acquirers of Geron Corporation (NASDAQ: GERN) securities between February 28 2025 to seek appointment as lead plaintiff of the Geron class action lawsuit the Geron class action lawsuit charges Geron as well as certain of Geron’s top current and former executives with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 A subsequently filed complaint is captioned Potvin v If you suffered substantial losses and wish to serve as lead plaintiff of the Geron class action lawsuit https://www.rgrdlaw.com/cases-geron-corporation-class-action-lawsuit-gern.html CASE ALLEGATIONS: Geron is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the development of therapeutic products for oncology Geron’s primary product is a telomerase inhibitor which Geron sells under the brand name Rytelo The Geron class action lawsuit alleges that defendants throughout the Class Period made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (i) defendants created the false impression that they possessed reliable information pertaining to Geron’s projected revenue outlook and anticipated growth while also minimizing risk from seasonality and macroeconomic fluctuations; (ii) in truth Geron’s optimistic reports of Rytelo’s launch success and potential growth fell short of reality as the impacts of seasonality and the burden of continued monitoring played a much more significant role in patient starts than defendants had implied; and (iii) Rytelo lacked the necessary awareness to penetrate the market resulting in an inability for Geron to capitalize on the purportedly significant unmet need for the drug particularly among first-line patients and those outside the academic setting The Geron class action lawsuit further alleges that on February 26 Geron announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024 disclosing that Rytelo’s growth had flattened over the preceding months attributing the diminished growth on seasonality and the burden of the monitoring requirement necessary for the drug treatment Geron’s stock price declined more than 32% THE LEAD PLAINTIFF PROCESS: The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 permits any investor who purchased or acquired Geron securities during the Class Period to seek appointment as lead plaintiff in the Geron class action lawsuit A lead plaintiff acts on behalf of all other class members in directing the Geron class action lawsuit The lead plaintiff can select a law firm of its choice to litigate the Geron class action lawsuit An investor’s ability to share in any potential future recovery is not dependent upon serving as lead plaintiff of the Geron class action lawsuit https://www.rgrdlaw.com/services-litigation-securities-fraud.html Contact:        Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP         J.C. A recognized leader in shareholder rights litigation, the attorneys and staff of Robbins LLP have been dedicated to helping shareholders recover losses and hold company executives accountable for their wrongdoing since 2002 we have obtained over $1 billion for shareholders Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome Equally deserving of a permanent post is her “Seven-Day Reset for More Time, Energy, and Happiness.” In a recent podcast episode Robbins shared what to do in seven days to “reclaim your time and focus” (and noted it’s a culmination of a decade’s worth of research) Why can’t I make progress on something that’s important to me consider her seven-day formula “your reset button” and a blueprint for taking back control “You’ll go from feeling scattered and exhausted to calm and ready to face whatever life throws at you next,” Robbins said You better believe I took copious notes (so you don’t have to) Below are seven research-backed habits she swears by—use them as a guide for a week-long reset or incorporate them into your routine every week Take out a piece of paper and write down whatever is on your mind Resist the urge to put on your editor hat (just me?) and just let it all out in your journal or on Post-it Notes (one of Robbins’ vehicles for her brain dumps)—no matter how random Once you’ve jotted down all the chatter in your mind “One of the reasons why a brain dump is so liberating is because you feel a little space in your mind free up,” she explained “The second thing that you’re going to notice is ‘I actually carry a lot around,’ and you’re going to be impressed with your mental capacity.” Make brain dumps a habit and she promises you’ll feel lighter and liberated That brings us to the second ritual on the checklist for setting yourself up to have a great week: You’re going to free yourself You’re going to notice that some (and maybe even most) of the things you brain dumped are not happening this week yet you’re lugging them around in your head Robbins said you’re going to release the hold those things have on you by crossing them off: “There is so much on that list that you have zero intention of doing this week You’re going to free yourself of bearing the weight of tasks that don’t require immediate attention (read: things you’re not getting to this week) with zero guilt By letting them go (at least for the current week) and sticking to it “You’re making room in your brain and your body and with your energy to not carry this stuff around with you,” she continued “Cross off absolutely everything that you’re not doing this week You’ve let it all out in writing and released the burden of projects you’re not getting to this week Now you’re left with items you can’t quite part with Robbins wants you to stand in front of said items and ask yourself this: Of all the things that are left on this list if I were to fast-forward to next weekend and look back on this week Is it tackling emails that are waiting for your response Is it baking cookies and driving them over to a friend who could use some support “Really look at that list because there’s something on there that is meaningful to you,” Robbins said this is something that I really would like to find a little time on.” and motivations surrounding the events of the workday It’s not when the study’s subjects completed the assignment that made them feel most fulfilled but rather when they were able to make progress on something important to them Spend 15 minutes moving the needle on managing your inbox “Progress creates more positive emotions,” Robbins stated “You feel this sense of joy and warmth and pride when you know you’re actually moving things forward You feel more naturally motivated and interested in what you’re doing when you make progress.” It’s not the actual goal in mind that is difficult and standing in your way and “moving a little bit forward in a world that is constantly screaming at you for your attention.” Robbins doesn’t recommend a specific diet or even prepping for an entire week’s worth of meals she recommends just planning one meal for the week you feel more in control of the week,” Robbins affirmed Checking off that single dinner can help set in motion more meals planned for the week and take away decision fatigue around the never-ending dilemma “What’s for dinner?” She added that research shows that people who plan their meals make healthier choices figuring out what to eat can often be a source of stress But if meal prepping an entire week’s worth of meals feels like too much having a plan for just one can make a difference Get your calendar out and map out one meal You might have such a jam-packed week that the only thing you can wrap your head around is DoorDashing as soon as you shut your laptop on Friday night If you have a roommate or live with your SO it might look like figuring out when you both will be home to sit down for dinner together (say then determining what you’re going to make (spicy shrimp tacos and spring pea pasta it is) and writing out the ingredients you need to grab from the store you’ve got your grocery list. And if you want to be a little extra double up the recipe; consider lunch or dinner for the next day covered It’s not just meal planning that Robbins takes the less-is-more approach—the same goes for working out She asks that you promise yourself to do just one solid workout this week She noted that there’s research around the power of one workout whether it’s 15 minutes or more (remember the “Hot 15?”) one 15-minute workout makes a big difference in your health,” she said Robbins is referring to a study published in the European Heart Journal that tracked the physical activity of 72,000 people over five years and it revealed that even the people who only did 15 minutes per week of vigorous physical activity had a 17 percent lower risk of death from any cause compared to people who did nothing With about 50 minutes of movement per week When you look ahead at the week, you can likely find a time in the morning or afternoon to go for a walk or do a 15-minute virtual Pilates class (bonus tip: if you do stream workout classes put the link to the class in your electronic calendar with an alarm—treat your workouts like any other important meeting where you would make sure to show up on time) It’s time to tack on finding a moment of quiet to do something just for you, to give your brain and your body respite. The only requirement is that it doesn’t involve looking at your phone. Standing in a hot shower a little longer than you normally would, making a cup of tea or a mocktail, picking up that nearly-done needlepoint project “One of the reasons why we doomscroll on social media and hours can go by is because it lulls you into this trance and we mistake it for rest,” Robbins said It’s actually keeping your brain active do a two-for-one and cook dinner or work out together (see: habits #4 and #5) Robbins also suggests catching up with a loved one while driving or arriving at work a half hour before the workday to send a text or an email to somebody you’re thinking about Robbins backs up this point with science; in fact she said it relates to the most important study ever conducted on human connection and happiness Referred to as the Harvard Study of Adult Development making it one of the longest-running studies on human happiness providing profound insights into the true aspects that contribute to a fulfilling and healthy life It found close relationships were the most important factor—more than wealth or genetics. “Relationships protect you from life’s challenges,” Robbins said “They help delay mental and physical decline Participants in this 87-year-long study who had strong social ties experienced longer healthier lives compared to those who were less connected.” And that’s the unapologetic real talk we know and can’t get enough of from (almost) everybody’s favorite contemporary self-development guru Katherine Chang is The Everygirl’s Wellness Staff Writer with over five years of experience in the health and wellness space She navigates the latest wellness topics and trends through expert interviews and studies and she’s always first in line to try them firsthand 1949 to the late Ray and Rheba (Avery) Robbins in Noblesville Viola retired in 2017 as a Senior Account Manager at Gregory & Appel with over 40 years in the insurance industry She enjoyed meeting with friends for a cocktail and reminiscing about the good old days Viola loved spending time with her family and always looked forward to Christmastime Visitation will be from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm 2025 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Noblesville Memorial contributions may be made to COPD Foundation, PO Box 160112, Miami, FL 33116-0112 (https://www.copdfoundation.org) SAN DIEGO, April 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Robbins LLP reminds stockholders that a class action was filed on behalf of all persons or entities that purchased or otherwise acquired Ibotta (NYSE: IBTA) common stock pursuant and/or traceable to the registration statement and related prospectus issued in connection with Ibotta's April 18 Ibotta purports to be a technology company that allows consumer packaged goods brands to deliver digital promotions to millions of consumers through its network called the Ibotta Performance Network For more information, submit a form, email attorney Aaron Dumas The Allegations: Robbins LLP is Investigating Allegations that Ibotta (IBTA) Misled Investors in Connection with its IPO defendants did not properly warn investors of the risks concerning Ibotta’s contract with The Kroger Co and Ibotta failed to warn investors that a large client could cancel their contract with Ibotta without warning Despite providing a detailed explanation of the terms of Ibotta’s contract with Walmart there was not a single warning of the at-will nature of Kroger’s contract Plaintiff alleges that the Company's 2Q 2024 10-Q failed to include any mention of Kroger as Ibotta's client despite Kroger's inclusion as a client in the Company's Registration Statement Ibotta's stock has plummeted and trades significantly lower than the IPO price of $88.00 per share About Robbins LLP: A recognized leader in shareholder rights litigation, the attorneys and staff of Robbins LLP have been dedicated to helping shareholders recover losses To be notified if a class action against Ibotta, Inc. settles or to receive free alerts when corporate executives engage in wrongdoing, sign up for Stock Watch today SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Robbins LLP informs stockholders that a class action was filed on behalf of all investors who purchased or otherwise acquired Open Lending Corporation (NASDAQ: LPRO) securities between February 24 Open Lending is a provider of loan services to automotive lenders For more information, submit a form, email attorney Aaron Dumas The Allegations: Robbins LLP is Investigating Allegations that Open Lending Corporation (LPRO) Misled Investors Regarding the Company's Business Prospects defendants: (1) misrepresented the capabilities of the Company's risk-based pricing models; knew about Karen you can imagine that if there was an issue she was going to help you feel better—and even if she didn’t have the answers you always ended the conversation knowing that you were loved kid” and thought she was supposed to hang out with her and her friends She always took part in their shenanigans and never told on them Karen slept with Teresa every night until they were old enough to move out they would get themselves so scared with their stories that they would have to run and jump in bed with their brother You would’ve thought she had given birth to them She fought for them friends thought of Karen as a second mom Karen thought she had the best life until she became a grandmother you could not hold a conversation without her talking about every single one of them and telling what they were each accomplishing She was very proud that Kadence is a cheerleader and beautiful to boot Garrett is now playing football and is the best kid on the team Grant excels in sports novelist, Tom Robbins, had died on Sunday at age 92 I felt a pang of melancholy and also a bit of surprise How could the literary world’s greatest imp — someone so perpetually young at heart — have been 92 years old I had the good fortune to share a public stage with Robbins a couple of times as well as a drink and a conversation on at least one memorable occasion I came of age reading Robbins’ novels; first “Another Roadside Attraction,” followed up with “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues,” and then his other entertaining works funny and stocked with fabulously wild metaphors and unexpected allusions but they also contain enlightened riffs on religion alternative lifestyles and the quirks of humanity we all share Critics who favor literature that is obtuse and rigidly serious were not fans of Robbins’ books Robbins resisted those who said he needed to choose between getting more solemn or becoming purely comedic rightly pointing out that life itself is filled with both laughter and tears, silly absurdities and cruel realities he ran as far as he could from the racism and narrow-mindedness of his home region where he worked for The Seattle Times until the 1960s counterculture lured him to alternative newspapers rock festivals and psychedelic epiphanies He spent something like a half century living in Skagit County and no writer has captured the misty mysticism and rain-soaked eccentricity of this region any better In “Another Roadside Attraction,” Robbins wrote about “lipstick-orange starfish” in Puget Sound; flooded Skagit Valley fields that “could be successfully navigated by midget submarines”; Northwest landscapes that are akin to “a Sung dynasty painting perhaps before the intense wisps of mineral pigment have dried upon the silk”;  and gray cloudy skies that turn the shrouded sun into “a little boiled potato in a stew of dirty dumplings.” And Robbins celebrated women and their many powers creating memorable characters like Sissy Hankshaw the protagonist in “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues,” who hitches her way through modern Western adventures unembarrassed by her two abnormally large thumbs one Robbins metaphor from that book has stuck in my memory for decades — his description of the story’s cowgirls making small sounds in their sleep that were “like the love cries of marshmallows.” Those who knew Tom Robbins well seem to have nothing but good things to say about this kind Those of us living along the shores of Puget Sound should be proud and grateful that he came to live and create among us See more of David Horsey’s Mary Moriarty’s decision not to prosecute a Walz administration staffer accused of a felony $20,000 vandalism spree in downtown Minneapolis Kristin Robbins (R–Maple Grove) issued the following statement: “The decision to decline to prosecute a felony case involving six individual incidents of extensive and deliberate property damage The public deserves and expects accountability for crime and the continued failure of Hennepin County Attorney Moriarty to prosecute crime and uphold the rule of law is a violation of her oath of office.” multiple Teslas at a downtown Minneapolis parking lot were severely damaged The incident was caught on surveillance footage and Minneapolis police recommended felony charges who works for the Department of Human Services in the Walz Administration Yet County Attorney Moriarty chose not to file charges despite clear evidence and efforts from law enforcement Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara voiced the frustration felt by many: “The Minneapolis Police Department did its job It identified and investigated a crime trend and presented a case file to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office for consideration of charges… Any frustration related to the charging decision of the Hennepin County Attorney should be directed solely at her office.” “This case is a prime example of why I authored legislation, HF 1188 that would allow city prosecutors to bring forward cases when a county attorney declines to act,” said Rep “When political calculations override justice Law enforcement must not be undercut by prosecutors unwilling to pursue clear cases of criminal behavior.” In addition to her bill to empower local prosecutors Robbins called on the Walz Administration to immediately fire the staffer involved in the vandalism: “It is indefensible that this individual remains employed by the Walz administration Public trust in government starts with accountability Governor Walz and DHS Commissioner Gandhi should take immediate action.” He was preceded in death by his wife 61 years and David Brown; great-grandchildren – Dai please remember his siblings Jeraldine Thompson (Alton)-deceased and Rhonda Gail Henderson ((Ligon)-and their families in their ability to describe this wonderful husband Many of us have our morning routines down pat (or at least are trying to nail it down). From opening shifts to morning menus we dedicate significant time and energy to figuring out how to start our days in the best way possible But evening routines don’t get the attention they deserve despite their long list of benefits like reducing stress your evenings are dominated by way too much TV and staying up too late (read: we lack a proper wind-down regimen) I know that my current evening routine isn’t sustainable and her step-by-step evening routine is a recent addition to her growing list of applicable wisdom I tried Robbins’ five-step evening routine for a week to see if I could change my bad evening habits once and for all her five-step evening routine is especially needed when there is “zero gas in the tank.” Made up of only five simple habits Robbins claims that this routine will not only help you close out each day but it’ll also benefit your sleep and set you up to feel better tomorrow.  So instead of going to bed at the exact moment we want to fall asleep we should be in bed about an hour before to give our bodies time to relax and naturally wind down for sleep.  start by picking the time you want to wake up in the morning and go back nine hours (for example make sure to prioritize consistency (AKA the key to establishing any routine).  This doesn’t need to be a full-on deep clean of your space; all you need is a few minutes to clean up any mess accumulated throughout the day and organizing any other clutter in your home.  make a note of the things you can do for yourself the night before it’s pulling out her workout clothes and laying them on the floor filling up a water bottle and placing it near the coffee maker packing up her lunch and preparing a bit of breakfast Remember: “Anything that you do tonight that can make tomorrow morning easier is a gift you’re giving to yourself,” she said.  We all need intentional time with ourselves This step can be completely customized to what you want to do in the evening When deciding how you want to retreat and unwind for the day Robbins strongly encourages tech-free activities because “it’s a lie to believe that scrolling mindlessly is time for you,” she stressed “It’s a lie that you tell yourself that slumping on the couch and having a phone in your hand while you’re flipping and watching trailers is somehow time for you.”  Some tech-free activities that you can do include taking a walk around the block Just think: In the time you’ve mindlessly watched five to 10 TikToks you could have done something to improve your mental or physical health and truly recharge All you need is five minutes—and if you can dedicate more time for self-care After a long, busy day, most of our go-to activities include doomscrolling or watching TV until we get tired enough to go to sleep. A 2021 study in Sleep Science highlighted the negative effects screens can have on sleep quality and cycles The research found that phone usage near bedtime disrupts sleep initiation A way to combat the pitfalls of doomscrolling and binge-watching is Robbins’ “tuck-your-phone-in-before-you-tuck-yourself-in” ritual Find a designated location out of arm’s reach (e.g. or living room) to put your phone away every night.   If you’re concerned about being completely unavailable overnight notify those closest to you about your commitment to a tech-free evening routine and instruct them to call (not text) if you’re needed Or you can adjust the notifications in your phone settings to mute calls with the exception of the people you put on your favorites list (just go to Settings > Focus > Sleep > People then add the people from your contact list who you want to grant access to notifications).  What instantly drew me to try Mel Robbins’ evening routine was how straightforward and simple it is After a week of trying out Mel Robbins’ five-step evening routine I can confidently say that it was exactly what I needed to create a healthy evening routine Not only did it give me a template to build a routine that works for me but it also improved my life in many other unexpected ways As someone with an all-or-nothing mentality even though I know they’d still make a positive impact on my wellness journey If I don’t feel 100 percent motivated for a workout like taking a few minutes to tidy up my space and taking at least five minutes to do something for me I learned that something is better than nothing I made time for the things that made me feel grounded and organized without stressing over whether my actions were perfect or grand: write out my to-do list place my vitamins on the kitchen counter so I remember to take them put everything I need for the next day in my backpack My lifestyle is pretty flexible; I work part-time as a freelance writer and part-time as a language teacher assistant so it’s easy for me to neglect structure outside of work especially when it comes to the evening time and flop onto my bed and stay there until nightfall watching random videos on YouTube and aimlessly scrolling through Instagram Reels I know what time I need to shut off my screens and start tidying up doing tasks that will make my morning easier I feel like I’m living for the weekend and not making the most of my weekdays I became more intentional with my evenings Now that my evenings are infused with things that bring me joy like romanticizing an evening walk around town taking time to light a candle and indulge in a good book or treating myself to a dessert after dinner I no longer feel like I have to wait for the weekend to slow down Once I started incorporating the five habits of Robbins’ evening routine beneficial practices to my day without much effort the habits I was practicing in my evening routine started to bleed into my morning routine: I practiced gratitude instead of waking up in a hurry and made time to sit down and enjoy my breakfast before heading out I was motivated to do more wellness habits because of how recharged and in control I felt from carrying out the simple I usually like to close out the day with a good binge session on Netflix while simultaneously scrolling on Pinterest (please no judging) This continues until I’m tired enough to drag myself to the shower do the short version of my skincare routine I noticed that this simple evening routine unintentionally helped me spend less time staring at screens It became a non-negotiable for me to turn off my devices by a certain time every day to ensure I had enough time to complete the steps of the routine before my bedtime Not only did this help me create boundaries and feel more in control over devices but it also helped me fall asleep more easily.  I’ll continue to do Robbins’ five-step evening routine It was the ideal routine for me to hit reset and start building healthy habits into my evenings I would recommend this routine to anyone who wants to trade in their current evening routine (or lack thereof) for one that is simple and flexible enough to make it your own.  She received a degree in journalism from San Diego State University and worked as an editor for the award-winning student newspaper Aaliyah covers a range of topics including slow living William and Diane Robbins;
