He replaces Cris Bell, who left after one season to take the job at Tuscaloosa County. “The rebuilding process has been a part of my journey “I never really walked into a situation where a team was coming off a 10-win season or a major playoff run I understand the challenges in front of us we’ve had those challenges at other places as well we can manage them at Robertsdale like we did at other places and put a product out there that is what the community needs and deserves.” Robertsdale ended a 24-game losing streak by winning its first two games of the 2024 season Robertsdale is just 12-47 since 2017 and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2004 It’s not like coach Jones has some magic formula I’ve just been blessed to be around some good football coaches But it has allowed us to get things in order and get things turned around at the different places we’ve been.” Jones is coming off a 25-19 run in four years as head coach at Beauregard He led the team to the playoffs in his last three seasons there The Hornets were 5-15 in the two seasons before Jones arrived Nine of his last 10 teams have made the playoffs Jones also had two stints as an assistant coach at Enterprise and a stint as defensive coordinator at Prattville He said there were a lot of positives when he thought about taking the job at Robertsdale just the opportunity to be in that area,” he said “You never hear anything negative about the Baldwin County area If you take football and the school aspect out of it you are still talking about the quality of life and the ability to live in a really unique and fun environment that is really cool for your family Jones also said he was excited to work with Robertsdale principal Shay White and is extremely encouraged by the facilities upgrades taking place at the school “We are in fast forward when it comes to getting the athletic facilities up to part with everyone else in the area,” Jones said I’ve been at places where similar changes have happened and I’ve seen how it not only changes the football program culture but athletics in general and the school in general To be able to walk in as head football coach and put a stamp on things and have an immediate impact is exciting.” Jones’ first official day on the job is Friday “It’s like they said in Smokey and the Bandit We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.” The Golden Bears are scheduled to open the season against LeFlore on Aug Use of and/or registration on any portion of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement, (updated 8/1/2024) and acknowledgement of our Privacy Policy, and Your Privacy Choices and Rights (updated 1/1/2025) © 2025 Advance Local Media LLC. (WALA) - A Robertsdale native has made it to the big stage in the professional golf world Colby Norman will be on the bag for pro golfer Danny Walker this week at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio as they look to qualify for the Masters in Augusta It’s a huge opportunity for Norman who has been making a name for himself as a caddie on the PGA tour Colby Norman didn’t play on the Golden Bears golf team in high school he only started playing with friends for fun while attending the University of Alabama Now he’s been a caddie for the last six years with this being his first year as a caddie on the PGA tour The last few weeks in particular have been a whirlwind Danny Walker was a first alternate for the Players Championship and a last-minute withdrawal from former world No 1 Jason Day meant that Walker and Norman were in Two rookies taking the course for a potentially life changing payday Walker went on to play extremely well in the tournament with the possibility of winning It was a long shot to even be playing in this tournament at all Walker finished in 6th place with Norman by his side the two are preparing to take the course this week in San Antonio I kind of joke with him pretty much every week just kind of messing around and I was like I don’t have anything on my schedule next week as of right now Norman tells me what the opportunity to caddie for Walker at the Masters would mean to him “I don’t think I would really know what’s going on until I actually got there I’d be figuring out how many tickets that I get a day And how do I get my family there as fast as possible I mean that would just be… I truly don’t even know how to put it into words.” With it being both of their rookie seasons neither Norman nor Walker have seen the majority of these courses The Valero Texas Open will take place at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course which is known for its challenging layout and par-72 design There is a ton of preparation that goes into getting ready for a tournament like this Norman always scouts each course ahead of every tournament “I try to either travel every Sunday night to wherever the next tournament is and get to the course and I will go out and try to see all 18 holes and just kind of chart in my yardage book what I see just really any type of information that would help him come tournament time.” Norman and Walker will play nine to 18 holes so Walker can see the course for himself and Wednesdays are PRO/AM days - a chance to get more practice alongside other golfers It’s an opportunity to get in any last-minute prep ahead of tournament time I’ll kind of do a deep dive in my yardage book which is basically just like a layout of the golf course I’ll do one last deep dive in that and make sure I’ve got everything figured out and Thursday it’s go time.” I will have more on Norman’s journey from Baldwin County to the PGA tour throughout the week. (WPMI) — A Robertsdale couple were arrested Thursday evening on aggravated child abuse charges and are currently being held without bond. William and Kelsey Brewer are each charged with one count of aggravated child abuse, a class B felony. According to Robertsdale Police, the abuse was reported to the Department of Human Resources by employees of the school, who in turn contacted police. The child, according to police, told investigators on one occasion the stepmother threw a lunch box at them. That incident, according to police, resulted in a busted lip and swelling of the mouth. That led police to conduct a home visit, at which time they discovered there were multiple reports of abuse. According to police, the child would be locked in their room, deprived access to the restroom, was not fed or bathed properly and their clothes would not be washed. Another instance, the child arrived at school with bruises on their face which, according to police, the child said were from the stepmother hitting them with a spatula. Aggravated Child Abuse carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison. .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ben Thomas | bthomas@al.comCris Bell knew the numbers before he agreed to take over the struggling football program at Robertsdale High School in Baldwin County 24 – Number of games the Golden Bears have lost consecutively entering the 2024 season 2 – Decades since the team has made the playoffs He was successful in doing that in his previous Alabama stops at Oak Mountain and Scottsboro Turning Robertsdale around may be a bigger challenge than either of those schools he has been undaunted as he attacks his new job and as Robertsdale jumps from 6A to 7A for the first time Bell spoke at Baldwin County Media Day earlier this month at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne about his time so far in Robertsdale the task at hand and how he plans to change the Bears’ fortunes What has been the first order of business for you at Robertsdale We have a lot of work to get done to get out of that streak We are trying to change the expectations across the board John Wooden used to start all his meetings with freshmen This is what a high school player looks like We’ve been putting in a lot of hours and not getting a lot of sleep.” you’ve had no problem staying busy in the off-season ‘Are you willing to get out and get your hands dirty and get the job done?” The veer option attack you like to run is a little different in today’s game “The thing the option gives us is the opportunity to balance the scales a little bit and I’ve got a couple that can match up physically with anyone but we’ve got to do something to give us opportunities to compete when we are playing against a more talented group overall I’ve taken over a lot of programs that have been in bad shape but that is no excuse not to get out there and perform We are going to get out there and compete our brains out and the expectation for our guys has to be What do you think about the team moving up a classification I want to play in the highest classification you can play but I missed being at Oak Mountain and being in that region (7A I want to compete at the highest level and against the best people You have to have the mindset to play anyone anywhere at any time.” Can you break down the intricacies of your offense a bit more We are going to read as many people on defense as we can because I don’t know if we can block very many What attracts you to coaching and keeps you in it “Every kid who plays high school football deserves to be coached like he is in the best program in the country All I ever wanted to do was to be a high school football coach we take a step or two forward and some we take a step backward Bell and Robertsdale open the 2024 season with back-to-back home games against Chickasaw (Aug The Central
