the attic spreading into the adjacent homes causing further damage All occupants were out of the affected homes prior to arrival of the fire department There were a total of 3 townhomes affected 2 of which sustained severe damage and the third home sustained minor damage one civilian transported to a local area hospital with smoke inhalation and one firefighter with minor burns The Red Cross was contacted to assist with the displacement of approximately 10 civilians It took approximately 30 minutes and 56 firefighters to bring the fire under control The Anne Arundel County and Naval District atdan.dearth@herald-mail.com One of Franklin's public elementary schools has been named a National Blue Ribbon School The district announced in a news release Sept 21 that Robinwood Elementary has been honored as a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School and as an Exemplary High Performing School.  The award recognizes public and private elementary middle and high schools nationwide that have demonstrated consistent excellence and have made progress in closing student achievement gaps Robinwood Elementary School principal Chad Nelson said the award means a lot to the school's staff students and the Franklin Public Schools community "It does feel good because we have teachers and families that are so dedicated each and every day to ensure that each and every child is growing in their own way It was just really nice to see how those results are showing beyond Franklin and even at the national or federal level as well and that it's being noticed," Nelson said in a Sept Nelson said the school focused on highlighting its work on continuous improvement in its application for the award after being nominated this spring He said the focus on continuous improvement has become engrained as the school's culture "We really created a system to look at getting better each and every day as staff for our students and really utilizing our data whether that is formative data or even subjective or objective data in order to improve and get better," Nelson said the school has focused on student growth in a year's time with a year's input in areas such as leadership art and math versus a focus on getting students to proficiency "We want all of our students to improve and all of them to grow So I would say that would be one of the things that mindset has established," said Nelson The school's motto — ROAR - Respectful, Organized and Responsible — goes beyond just academics Nelson said the school's goal is to help students become good people "We need to also teach those behaviors that we expect of our students and then encourage them in ways as well to meet those behaviors because academics are one side of the coin but the other side is really who they're going to be as people and we want to make good people here," said Nelson The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a U.S. Department of Education effort in its 39th year and has given about 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools. Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year, according to the program's website The department honors schools in two categories: Exemplary High Performing Schools and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state's highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school's student groups and all students Robinwood Elementary will be honored in a ceremony in November in Washington along with representatives from other National Blue Ribbon Program schools from across the country For more information about the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, visit nationalblueribbonschools.ed.gov/ Contact Alec Johnson at (262) 875-9469 or alec.johnson@jrn.com. Follow him on Twitter at @AlecJohnson12 COVID-19 kept Piedmont Community Charter School from formally marking the completion of its new high school campus in Gastonia but all of the school’s students are finally enjoying it together.  “It’s an absolute dream come true,” said Jennifer Killen Piedmont Charter’s head of school who began working at the school 19 years ago as a teacher’s assistant She never imagined she would have a hand in building a new high school campus “My heart is just full of gratefulness.”  Here are several key takeaways from the new campus:  Piedmont Charter’s new campus cost the school $20 million and features a 70,000-square-foot school building with 32 classrooms on two floors a full-sized gymnasium for basketball and volleyball games as well as physical education, a fine arts auditorium with more than 300 seats and an outdoor soccer field.  the school’s South New Hope Road campus which now serves grades five through eight cost the school just more than $5 million by the time it opened in 2010 according to Piedmont Charter.   which are fitted with Apple TVs and sound bars, include two science labs fine arts classrooms and a health sciences classroom.  Many of the school’s features, such as a large commons area to be used for lunch and smaller student commons on each floor, have yet to be fully used by students due to the pandemic The student commons have floor-to-ceiling dry erase walls meant for collaboration among students.   Some of the most notable perks of the new campus include facilities made specifically for school use said High School Director Ernie Bridges.  theater arts didn’t have a home stage to perform on nor did the school’s sports team have home fields The school’s theater arts department used the Little Theater of Gastonia to perform and the school’s sports teams used other venues across the county to play on.  “Theater arts has a better facility to put on performances,” he said “We’re able to have home basketball games home soccer games for boys and girls instead of going to somebody else’s site.”  has attended Piedmont Charter since kindergarten Tharp and his teammates enjoy seeing their school colors as they run up and down the court they now call home "We used to play at a church for basketball Now we get to see our logo on the court and have our own home floor It feels like an actual high school," he said Though there’s not an associated timeline, the school plans to build a baseball and softball complex at the Robinwood Road campus.  Student morale is high despite the pandemic High school students used to share a building with middle school students but now have their own space which has generated a newfound school spirit.  "The biggest thing is just having our own school now," said Nataleigh Turlington a senior who has attended Piedmont Charter since kindergarten "Now we have all of our own classrooms."  Turlington and her fellow students also didn’t have a traditional first day of school in their new building The students began the school year completely online and later transitioned to in-person learning four days a week Some students opted to remain learning remotely.   Once high school students moved into the new building earlier this school year Bridges noticed a substantial increase in school pride and morale from last school year to this school year despite any pandemic dampers.  It feels like a completely different student body and he expects morale to increase in the coming years.  “I’m noticed elevated pride in the kids and the other thing that I’m seeing is they’re really taking care of it,” he said “I only see that going up when we’re all in-person and we’re not wearing masks.”   Opening the new campus allowed the charter school to free up space at the elementary campus located on East Second Avenue, and middle school campus.   Piedmont Charter hired an additional teacher for each grade level in grades kindergarten through fourth grade and two additional teachers for each grade level in grades five through eight.  High school enrollment alone increased from 366 students during the 2019-20 school year to 574 this school year The high school campus has a capacity of 600 K-12 enrollment at Piedmont Charter increased by 500 students to a total of 1,800 according to the school. Killen expects the Piedmont Charter's total enrollment to reach 1,900 students next school year Business and health sciences programs will be a new focus at Piedmont Charter.  A mathematics teacher at the school began offering business classes at the school this school year.  Bridges hopes to soon partner with Gaston College so students in Piedmont Charter’s health sciences program can earn nursing certifications as they finish high school.   Students have shown promising, long-term interest in the programs – especially health sciences Bridges said. The school currently offers three health sciences courses, which each have more than 20 students in them.  “We’re filled up in health sciences,” he said.   president of Piedmont Charter’s board of directors noted that paying tribute to Gaston County through the design of the new building was a critical aspect of the project.  Commuters who pass or stop by the high school campus - designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting and constructed by Rodgers Builders both of Charlotte - may notice that the school building’s exterior aesthetic mirrors that of old textile mills throughout the county.   “It echoes some of the mill buildings you see in the county,” Satterfield said “It’s the same rhythm [as a mill] with the glass high in the gym and the brick low.”  Much of the inspiration for the design came from a particular building along Spencer Mountain Road through Ranlo School leaders took photos of the building before it was demolished and gave them to the architects for them to use as a guide for the exterior.   designed the school's Washington County Board of Commissioners awarded a nearly $7.8 million construction contract to widen a portion of Robinwood Drive east of Hagerstown The Robinwood Drive Corridor II project will increase a one-mile stretch of the roadway from two lanes to four between the entrances of Meritus Medical Center on Medical Campus Road and Hagerstown Community College on Academic Boulevard Robinwood Drive will be a four-lane divided roadway between those intersections connecting to a new roundabout that replaces the traffic signal at the intersection of HCC’s entrance and Youngstoun Drive the county deputy director of public works “This is a major corridor improvement,” County Administrator Gregory B Murray said prior to the five commissioners’ unanimous approval to award the contract to Milani Construction LLC of Washington The total construction contract amounts to $7.79 million which includes $7.685 million for widening the roadway and the new roundabout Another $105,000 to be paid by HCC is part of Milani’s bid to install a new wall and fencing at the college’s entrance The roundabout — which will have two through-lanes on Robinwood Drive similar to many installed by the Maryland State Highway Administration — will be built with a concrete apron surrounding a raised and landscaped center median Overhead street lighting will be added near the roundabout for increased pedestrian safety to and from the college Slocum said the project also includes new traffic signals and equipment at the intersection of Medical Campus Road and the Elks Lodge entrance as well as storm-drain upgrades and new curbing along the length of the project Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and ramps will be installed along the north side of the new roadway Some temporary lane closures are likely with various stages of the widening and paving processes but Slocum said the county intends to keep at least one lane open at all times Slocum said he has spoken to the presidents of Meritus and HCC about potential traffic delays associated with the work He also told the commissioners that he expects “a bit of chaos,” but the county and contractor will do their best to manage the work with marginal disruptions Two other bidders came in under the county engineer’s estimate of about $9.17 million Two bids received exceeded the engineer’s estimate Slocum told the commissioners that officials solicited feedback about Milani a company the county has not worked with prior to this project Milani officials said they intend to subcontract about 23 percent of the overall work to local companies in the county “which is about $1.5 million to $2 million in paving alone,” Slocum said McKinley said after Tuesday’s meeting that congestion on Robinwood Drive has been an issue for years noting it is not unusual for that area to gridlock once or twice a day when traffic is heavy between Meritus and HCC “I think the advantage of what we did today with the Robinwood project will enhance the traffic flow in so many ways,” McKinley said Safety was a key component in the widening to better allow ambulances access to and from the hospital facilities on Medical Campus Drive Other infrastructure projects will be in the works for that area over the next few years including extending Yale Drive to HCC and extending Professional Court that juts off Eastern Boulevard North to intersect with Yale Drive The Hagerstown-Washington County Industrial Foundation is in the process of developing its proposed Mt which officials estimate could potentially create about 2,000 jobs over the next 15 years that will continue to improve the traffic flow of Robinwood,” McKinley said I think the Yale Drive project will be good.” the county needs to finalize its contracts with Milani who anticipates giving the go-ahead for work to start by July 8 Milani will be given 500 consecutive calendar days to complete the job which is expected to be completed by mid-November 2014 including $8.15 million in Capital Improvement Plan funds and the $7.79 million contract is fully funded at the start of fiscal year 2013-14 on July 1 Inspections will be handled by county staff and consultants throughout the process The evolving tug of war over new patients in the growing local health care market has pivoted to southeast Gastonia this week Almost a dozen urgent Kafsky said the response of the Y's membership to the opening of the lake has been very positive with more than 430 of them having used the lake in the last couple of weeks Another attribute of the lake is the outdoor chapel which fronts its waters and offers seating for up to 150 adults "We've had several churches do their Sunday morning services over there," said Kafsky All we ask is that their offering collection be contributed to our fund to provide recreational opportunities for children who otherwise could not afford it." Kafsky also noted that the lake features a large floating fishing pier and that so far the richly-stocked lake has yielded good results The Piedmont Area Wildlife Stewards have also contributed an osprey nest tower to the lake and the large predatory birds are often seen at the lake and its environs A large deck area with rocking chairs overlooks the lake as does a sundeck with lounge chairs off the two pools "This truly is a remarkable setting for a Y," said Miller "With the lake and the woods and all the property we have A part of that potential will soon be realized with the official opening of the Y's walking/jogging/hiking trail system the trailhead for which will be on the south side of the lake's dam There will be some elevation gain and loss we're just waiting to get the signage up to declare them officially open." Miller thanked the husband and wife team of Ron and Janet Sytz for donating time and resources to make the trail system a reality She and Kafsky also gave special thanks to: • Joel Long of GSM Services who helped spearhead the entire project and brought out employees from the company to clear space and build platforms • Jon Mark Hovis of Hovis Lawn Care who did much of the finishing work • Lake “We are still on schedule for getting the keys Dec and then opening in the middle of December,” said Gaston Family YMCA CEO and President Tony Sigmon “A lot of the things that are left to do will come together pretty quickly.” Nearly a year and a half has passed since officials broke ground on the new Robinwood Lake YMCA – an aesthetically imposing complex being built on the bank of a 34-acre reservoir it will replace the outdated Central Branch YMCA near downtown Gastonia that has been in service for decades Sigmon said it’s “amazing” to think how far the project has come “We have been charging hard for over three years and we are looking forward to getting the doors open and getting members in to enjoy the YMCA,” he said “That’s going to be the finish line for us but it’s also the starting line for the future.” What started as a $16 million venture was boosted to a $20.5 million capital campaign after construction began The cost went up as YMCA leaders decided to increase the footprint of the complex from 48,000 to a full 60,000 square feet which includes interest on the construction loan officials have raised about $19 million to date Fundraising efforts are still going full steam ahead Plans are to retain the YMCA’s current membership rates to $76 for a family of two adults and dependents Scholarships will help to pay for those who can’t afford those rates provided they fall under income thresholds and meet certain requirements Visitors using the large indoor lap pool and separate recreational pool will have a clear view of Robinwood Lake through a glass wall They’ll also be able to sit outside on a grand deck overlooking the water A playground and athletic fields for soccer field hockey and other sports will flank the east side of the YMCA A trail leading to the other side will guide people toward the woods where a campground and more than three miles of natural trails will be built throughout the 110-acre site will take the lead soon in blazing those trails Trail and campground elements will also likely be completed as part of Eagle Scout projects “That work will continue on through the spring,” he said All the standard YMCA amenities will be in place including a gymnasium for basketball and other activities and three to four exercise studios with a ‘spin stadium.’ The 10,000-square-foot fitness center with include machines from about five different vendors Floor machines will be there along with staples such as bench presses and squat racks “The cool thing is we’ll have everything from equipment that’s specifically designed for folks with Parkinson’s disease and post-stroke patients and other machines like stepmills and Jacobs Ladder,” Sigmon said Permits have been approved for the YMCA to rebuild and fortify the earthen dam that makes Robinwood Lake what it is a boathouse will allow members to rent canoes kayaks and fishing boats with electric trolling motors Artificial reefs will be built in the lake catering to the 36,000 largemouth bass and bream that were stocked there last spring Wood duck nests and osprey stands have been installed around the water which has an average depth of 18 to 25 feet A chapel on the east bank of the lake will provide a unique place for faith-based services Kids ages 6 to 11 will relish access to a 24-foot-tall adventure climbing center roll and tumble” area for toddlers and crawlers,” Sigmon said A special café and smoothie bar near the lobby will provide a place for visitors to grab a quick bite to eat at different times of the day who owns Guilty Pleasures Catering and Bakery in for position in the Hogan administration Gastonia leaders have approved a preliminary subdivision plat that outlines a plan for 51 new homes near Robinwood Lake submitted the plan for constructing the new residences at the corner of Elam Street and Winterlake Drive The Gastonia Planning Commission unanimously approved it during its regular meeting May 9 The subject of the new development most recently came before the planning commission last December JP Development submitted a rezoning request for the 19 acres of land there which was already subdivided into nine total tax parcels zoned for residential use with 12,000-square-foot lots JP Development asked for that to be converted to an R-8 residential zoning designation that would allow 8,000-square-foot lots increasing the number of homes it could squeeze onto the land When some questions arose about that proposal the firm withdrew its request to allow for more time to talk to nearby residents about the change “Several of their questions were good questions that we needed to answer,” JP Development Group owner Tom Pearson said at the time The rezoning proposal came back before the planning commission in January with some additional conditions for the subdivision A number of neighbors voiced concerns about the increase in traffic which resulted in the commission approving the change Elam Street and Winterlake Drive are not constructed to city standards So the developer will be responsible for installing concrete curb and gutter sidewalks and any other necessary improvements to bring the road frontage up to those standards Streams flow through portions of the wooded property and a very small lake serves as the signature feature of the land Pearson said the single-family houses that Eastwood Homes builds as part of the new development will range in price from $350,000 to $450,000 exceeding the value of many of the neighboring homes there now “I think it could be one of the prized developments in Gastonia,” he said “It will really have some unique qualities about it.” it appears that the victim did indeed pass away from injuries received from this shooting This is the 6th homicide in Annapolis
