The seasons may turn, but some things stay the same. With the end of the winter season, the eye of the surfing world has begun to stray from the shores of Hawai’i, but local die-hards are still making the most of spring waves. The latest to do so was Mason Ho

but summer day trips to Rocky Point are the most nostalgic
Looking back on my childhood in Rhode Island, I have so many incredible memories. Of course, there were day trips to Newport and Narragansett, ferry rides to Block Island, days at the beach, visits to Lincoln Woods, hanging out with friends on Thayer Street in Providence after school, apple picking at Jaswell's Farm, etc. And then there were those summertime trips to Rhode Island's one and only amusement park—Rocky Point.
but I can't even recreate these memories as an adult
Rocky Point closed for good in the mid-1990s
the property where the amusement park once stood is now a state park
The property of Rocky Point Amusement Park has a longstanding history
It was first opened in the 1840s and became a popular destination along Narragansett Bay
starting with a ferry pier and shore dinners
and then a few amusement rides were added a few years later
Photo by Melissa MahoneyIn the 1950s through 1995, Rocky Point Amusement Park became the go-to place for summer fun for Rhode Islanders. Those of us who grew up within that timeframe hold fond family memories of trips to this amusement park. For some, a day at Rocky Point was an annual summertime trip filled with thrilling rides and a visit to the park's Shore Dinner Hall for clam cakes and chowder.
Rhode Islanders suffered a devastating blow when Rocky Point Amusement Park was shut down permanently
The owners took out loans on the property to fund other business ventures and couldn't repay the bank
when my mom and I visited Prince Edward Island in Canada several years ago
This amusement park had purchased Rocky Point's Cyclone Rollercoaster
I was able to take a picture of this amusement park ride
While The Cyclone was no longer in Rhode Island
it still made me happy to know that it's creating memories for new generations in Canada
there's now a large green space complete with ghostly remnants of certain rides that nature is reclaiming

interpretive signs state what structure or ride once stood there
Coming here as an adult is a trip down memory lane
and reading the signs takes me back to the thrill of a summertime day trip to Rocky Point
I can almost hear the screams of those on the rollercoasters and feel the joy and laughter that we all experienced at the beloved amusement park that once was

Idaho Transportation Department
The Idaho Transportation Department recently secured $20.8 million in grant funding to build three wildlife underpasses near Montpelier
These improvements will increase drivers’ safety on U.S
Highway 30 at Rocky Point between Montpelier and the Wyoming border
The project aims to mitigate wildlife-vehicle conflict points with wildlife underpasses built where the highway crosses a regional mule deer migration route
This 20-mile section of US-30 can incur more than 100 mule deer collisions with vehicles each year
with about 70% of those carcasses being reported in the four-mile section (milepost 443-447) known as Rocky Point
Besides making the highway safer for drivers
the new structures will protect the migration corridor and ensure connectivity between crucial seasonal mule deer habitat
The three wildlife underpasses will be coupled with about 6 road miles of 8-foot-tall wildlife fencing to “funnel” migrating wildlife toward the underpasses
The funding is part of $125 million in federal grants also announced in December for wildlife crossing projects in 16 states
“We are excited to get this project fully-funded and built,” Environmental Planner Alissa Salmore said
“Local citizens and our Montpelier crew have been asking for a solution here for decades
It will be good to finally deliver this project
with key contributions from the ITD team and Idaho Fish and Game as a partner agency
developed the application package for submittal to the FHWA Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program over the past year
The grant covers about 98% of the construction costs for the trio of underpasses
Department of Agriculture will fund a portion of the fencing to connect two of the structures in the heart of the mule deer travel route
There are significant benefits to the project beyond ITD’s interest
Idaho Fish and Game also has a strong interest in resolving the conflict between the highway traffic and the regional Bear Lake Plateau mule deer herd’s migration path
The Bear Lake Plateau mule deer herd is a key piece of southeastern Idaho’s economy
bringing thousands of hunters and wildlife enthusiasts to stay and recreate in the area every year
The mule deer migration encompasses parts of Wyoming and Utah as well as Idaho
so those states will also see a benefit from reducing the wildlife-vehicle collision rate at Rocky Point
more than one million wildlife-vehicle collisions are estimated to impact motorists and wildlife in the U.S
Wildlife-vehicle collisions involving large animals result in approximately 200 human fatalities and 26,000 injuries to drivers and their passengers each year
These collisions also cost the public more than $10 billion annually
Highways can threaten wildlife populations by fragmenting habitats
and causing mortality due to wildlife-vehicle collisions

(WECT) - A more than 600-acre wildfire in Pender County on N.C
WECT was previously told by the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office that the cause of the fire was a controlled burn
officials stated later on April 21 that the cause is still under investigation by the North Carolina Forest Service
but not before neighbors were forced to evacuate their homes on Saturday
Shawana Rivas and her family moved into their house in Pender County a few months ago
but this fire over the weekend nearly took it all away
We had neighbors that lived down here that were home and were like ‘did you get clothes?’ and I was like we had nothing,” said Rivas
She was told to evacuate when she was heading home from church
Rivas recalls seeing the ash falling even though she was still a mile away from her house
and I was telling the officer just let me go home and check on him because for a moment he was not answering the phone
and I was worried because he has asthma,” said Rivas
Though there were no injuries reported or homes lost
Rivas pleads for others to keep their neighbors in mind when burning
but your neighbors and people miles away from you because of the large amount of land that burned,” said Rivas
Forestry Service (NCFS) crews were able to contain the fire with better mapping and strong containment lines
The fire will continue to smoke and smolder until adequate precipitation happens
and the NCFS is continuing to monitor the fire by ground personnel and aircraft
“All agencies provided support at the utmost level of professionalism
and property without any injuries or homes lost
Conditions remain favorable for wildfire activity,” a N.C
Forestry Service representative said in a statement
Fire crews say people on Ashton Road at Ashton Crossroads and McCrary Road are safe to return home
fire crews said people living on Ashton Road and McCrary Road needed to evacuate
Neighbors were asked to go to Heide Trask High School
Several fire crews were on the scene of a large wildfire in Rocky Point Saturday for most of the afternoon and evening
According to the NCFS, the fire grew to a total of 661 acres and is now 100% contained
A WECT News crew on the scene spotted planes overhead spraying water on the fire
and Pender County Emergency Management all responded
No injuries or structural damage have been reported
We will continue to add details to this story as they become available

Rocky Point celebrates after winning the state Class B cheerleading title at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton
These Eagles soared higher than ever before
The Rocky Point cheerleading team secured its second state championship with the highest score of the morning session at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton
earning an 87.90 to claim the class B competitive crown
“Every stunt we hit gave us more motivation to keep going,” senior flyer Ella Reisinger said
From winning six of seven county competitions to experiencing defeat at a regional championship
the Eagles were determined to turn every moment into motivation for success
“A few things didn’t work out this season that we hoped
but we were motivated to work harder and show everyone we could keep going,” Reisinger said
“We felt that defeat a few times this season and we didn’t want it in our last time on the mat.”
No one hurdled a more difficult obstacle than senior flyer Callie Russell
a week before the UCA national championship
she was back on the mat for the state championship
“I trusted the girls and people that were in every spot
and we’re all a family and motivated each other to push through,” Russell said
I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.”
The team’s motivation was also shaped by the loss they endured last season at the county championship
where Rocky Point finished shy of a state championship appearance by 0.1 point
“We dreamed of that moment of winning a state title since the beginning of the season,” Russell said
“We had the mindset of just having fun and enjoying our last moment of the year
but we used the losses and turned them into motivation to be better and show our best."
The last time Rocky Point earned a state championship title was in 2019
when coach Samantha Ferrara was a flyer on the Eagles squad
who returned last year as the Eagles' coach
couldn’t have been prouder of her team’s growth
“They were not stopping until they completed their goal
and I had the feeling they did it watching the finals,” Ferrara said
“Doing it as a coach is the greatest feeling because you’re so proud they get to feel what you felt.”
With six of the 17 squad members being seniors
they hope their state title will ignite a flame in the underclassmen to continue soaring to new heights
“I think it was really important to reassure everyone that we were all capable of doing it and they know they can do it again,” Reisinger said
“All of the feelings they experienced along the way will give them drive in the upcoming seasons to come back even stronger.”

Rocky Point goalie Brianna Henke makes the arm save on the Mt
Sinai shot in a Suffolk girls Division II lacrosse game
the only breeze making its presence felt came from Rocky Point’s cage
Known by her nickname “Breezy,” Brianna Henke helped the Rocky Point girls lacrosse team lock down a pivotal 5-4 road victory in Suffolk League II play on Thursday afternoon
The University of Massachusetts Amherst commit made eight saves in net for Rocky Point (4-1)
including three crucial stops in the fourth quarter
Halfway through the fourth quarter with Rocky Point leading by just a goal
Henke saved consecutive free-position shots from Mount Sinai within 30 seconds of each other
Mount Sinai moved the ball effectively in the eight-meter arc and created a good look from the right side
but Henke dropped to a knee to deflect a low shot and save the day
just not let it get to my head and play my game,” Henke said
knowing that if they score and the game is tied
junior midfielder Kaleigh Moeller — who scored two goals in the first quarter — scooped up the ground ball and pushed it up the field to sophomore defender Teagan Trentowski to set up the successful clear
Watching Trentowski cross midfield and essentially ice the game allowed Henke to bask in the moment
after this back-and-forth battle of a game and not scoring for a quarter
knowing that we just beat them,” Henke said
Neither team scored in the second or fourth quarters
Rocky Point attacker Cadence Adamo caught a feed at the right top of the 12-meter arc and fired it into the back of the net to tie the game
faked out the goalie on the left doorstep and fired it in to give the Eagles the lead for good
“It does feel really good that I helped bring my team to success today,” Adamo said
Other contributors to the win were senior midfielders Kylie Lamoureux (one goal
as well as eighth grade attacker Colbie Burke (one assist)
Alexa Spallina finished with a goal and two assists and sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Arrington saved seven shots
Travelers headed toward the popular beach destination of Puerto Peñasco
might see long wait times because of heightened security measures at the Lukeville Port of Entry
After Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum deployed 10,000 National Guardsmen to reinforce the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the “Operativo Frontera Norte” mission
troops stationed across the border began inspecting more and more vehicles crossing in and out of Mexico
About 200 soldiers were sent to the border town of Sonoyta, part of a collective of 1,500 Guardsmen distributed across the state of Sonora
Sheinbaum agreed to reinforce the border with additional military personnel to postpone President Donald Trump’s plans to impose duties on imports from Mexico
Those troops have been tasked with preventing drug-trafficking from Mexico to the United States by conducting a variety of security operations
including helping Mexican Customs officers at ports of entry
Several people have shared their experiences with the changes at the land border crossing online in a Facebook group centered around the Mexico beach destination
Some who have posted in "Rocky Point Friends" over the last few weeks said they waited for more than two hours to cross into Mexico
Others caution that wait times vary significantly
and that individual experiences depend on the time of day
The Arizona Republic reached out to several members of the group for this story
“Sometimes you'll experience some of those larger lines
because the controlling processes in Mexico has been increased,” Rafael Barceló Durazo
“But that's something I would say that's contingent on the time when you're crossing.”
Durazo emphasized that the Mexican government has not changed its policies regulating American travelers in response to the Trump administration’s threat of tariffs on Mexican goods
“There's been fake news on social media saying that President Sheinbaum announced that the U.S
citizens should have a visa in order to get into Mexico as tourists
The latest immigration numbers: Deportations; Border crossings; DACA; Visas and more
including the rules around the "Forma Migratoria Múltiple," have remained the same
The operational hours for the Port of Entry in Lukeville recently were extended after Dr
Customs and Border Protection’s director of the port of Lukeville
Travelers crossing into Mexico have also been asked to present their "Forma Migratoria Múltiple," an immigration document colloquially called a "tourist card."
“It's just registering your entrance into Mexico," Durazo explained
to prove that your passport was controlled when you got into Mexico."
Visitors who plan to go further into Mexico than the border region and will be in the country for more than seven days should get the FMM
The Instituto Nacional de Migración is responsible for issuing the "Forma Migratoria Múltiple." To acquire the FMM, individuals must fill out an application online or at the border crossing's local INM

Cordova takes visitors across destinations along the Gulf of California and further into the interior of Mexico
Cordova took seven American tourists to the popular whale-watching town of Guerrero Negro in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur
He encountered multiple military checkpoints on the way
including one where Mexican officials told him that his clients did not have an entry stamp into Mexico
"After talking to him for about 30 mins he basically told me that I was transporting illegals and that they can get deported
pay a hefty find and possibly go to jail," Cordova wrote in a Facebook post
Cordova now asks that all of his clients obtain proper documentation before going on any trips
"I strongly suggest you get it just in case
because you just never know," Cordova said

The Lukeville border crossing is extending its hours on Fridays starting in March to help ease peak-season travel to Puerto Peñasco
The government of Puerto Peñasco announced that the crossing into Mexico would extend its hours to 10 p.m
The crossing will continue to close at 8 p.m
Keith Allen with Encántame Resorts said the move is a step in the right direction
He said the border crossing used to be open until midnight every day pre-COVID-19
“It’s been hard for a lot of people because we’re a drive-in destination and we’re known as Arizona’s beach,” Allen said
“It’s been difficult for some people to get off work and get across the border by 8 o’clock.”
Allen hopes that the longer hours will drive tourism this summer
that border officials will extend the new hours to other days of the week and consider keeping them in place past October

The town’s waste management crew demolished the long-vacant home at 118 Route 25A
Town Supervisor Dan Panico said the property will be absorbed by the expansive Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest that surrounds it
New York’s Department of Conservation purchased the abandoned property

Located near Aldi supermarket and Spiro’s restaurant — and across the street from the vacant Rocky Point Drive-In property — the half-acre lot included a 916-square-foot
one-story house that for years had been covered in graffiti
The property had previously sold in 2007 for $315,000
The structure was demolished by the town under a “fast track” process to quickly remove unsafe buildings — so-called “Zombie homes” — from neighborhoods
