A friend speaking, his voice steady and sad, as he pointed toward the orange glow of the fast-encroaching Palisades fire The park — named after Rogers’ great-grandfather — was Will Rogers Historic State Park in Pacific Palisades the last place the cowboy-humorist had called home who lives near her great-grandfather’s gravesite in Claremore “just put my phone on silent and sat and cried.” The fire destroyed Will Rogers’ century-old house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places And it incinerated his white-and-green stable with its stately central rotunda a firefighter with the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Station 69 looks at the burned remains of Will Rogers’ historic ranch house (Carlin Stiehl / For The Times) In the surrounding park — 186 wooded acres cut with ocean-view hiking and equestrian trails — more than 200 trees planted in the 1920s and 1930s at Rogers’ behest were so badly charred they soon will be removed according to California State Parks officials a portion of the still-closed park is being used as a processing site for trees and shrubs removed from the fire zone The site also is being used to pulverize concrete removed from burned properties As for the twisted remains of Will Rogers’ 31-room ranch house: They had not yet been cleared as of Friday the question she faces the most is the one that’s hardest to answer: What comes next It is hard to overstate the grip Will Rogers had on Americans in the early 20th century Rogers was the country’s first multimedia superstar: Nationally syndicated newspaper columnist Hollywood’s highest-paid actor and the star of more than 70 movies Humorist Will Rogers laughs while sitting with his feet propped up on a straw table (George Rinhart / Getty Images) The “Cherokee Kid,” as he was known was born in 1879 in Indian Territory near modern-day Oologah With his country twang and aw-shucks mannerisms belying a keen intellect, he was the lasso-roping star of vaudeville and the Broadway stage And his wry political commentary is widely considered the precursor to the modern late-night TV monologue (“All I know is just what I read in the papers,” he once quipped and everything is changing and he’s adapting like some kid jumping on the internet in the ‘80s or YouTube in the aughts,” said Larry Nemecek board president of the nonprofit Will Rogers Ranch Foundation “He became the king of all media while it was being invented.” Hollywood — the up-and-coming center of the film industry — came calling and their four children to Southern California at the behest of movie producer Samuel Goldwyn the couple bought more than 200 undeveloped acres in the Santa Monica Mountains in the nascent community of Pacific Palisades the family built what started as a six-room weekend cabin It was added onto over the years until it became a 31-room California Will Rogers was the most beloved American of his day In a 1927 letter to his architect Rogers said he wanted the cream-colored house to be a simple “very [plain] and ordinary” and with “a big wide porch.” It was built on a gentle slope he wanted some level ground in front of the porch “so we can ride our horses up and hitch ‘em right in front of the house.” The house had a wagon-wheel chandelier and barnlike rafters — and a high ceiling that Rogers had raised while his wife was traveling abroad so he could practice roping indoors There were Navajo rugs; custom, Western-style Monterey couches and chairs; and hundreds of books, including signed first-editions by Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller and Harry Houdini. A stuffed roping calf given by a friend who had grown tired of Rogers lassoing him Betty wrote in her memoir after her husband’s death in a 1935 Alaska plane crash Barbara Tejada joined fellow State Parks employees from across California at Malibu Creek State Park for a long-planned fire training session it was Santa Ana wind conditions,” said Tejada Jennifer Rogers speaks with members of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Pacific Palisades-based Station 69 in front of the burned remains of Will Rogers’ ranch house (Carlin Stiehl / For The Times) Just after 10:30 a.m. attendees’ phones started pinging: A fire had started in the Palisades Tejada and a colleague grabbed boxes, tape, moving blankets and bubble wrap from the Malibu Creek facility. They took off for Will Rogers’ ranch house, slowly weaving around traffic gridlocked on Pacific Coast Highway Tejada said 10 State Parks employees — two of whom would lose their homes — worked on-site Maintenance and restoration staffers started sprinklers atop the buildings and on hillsides workers stuffed State Parks pickup trucks and personal vehicles with historic treasures “We have an emergency evacuation plan for Will Rogers with a list of priority items by time — if you have one hour Thousands of rusty nails lie on the ground near the burned ranch house (Carlin Stiehl / For The Times) But as the flames approached “people just started grabbing whatever was easily reachable.” They saved paintings, pottery and Native American rugs. They got the typewriter Rogers used to compose his newspaper columns. Tejada carried out sculptures and paintings by a friend of Rogers The stuffed roping calf burned. So did all the furniture, the book collection and a newly restored hand-crank barrel piano Flames were visible in their rearview mirrors the sprinklers — no match for the wind-driven fire — were still spraying Jennifer Rogers knew little about her famous great-grandfather “We didn’t really talk much about Will Rogers who lived in New Mexico and Texas in her youth Rogers did not visit the ranch until she was about 21 when her grandfather took her family to New York City for the debut of the musical “The Will Rogers Follies,” based on the humorist’s life she “sat there on Broadway in disbelief.” “I just said to my grandpa: ‘I want to learn more.’” In 2006, as the state was finishing a $5-million restoration of the ranch house Rogers co-founded the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation Rogers — who for two decades ran a Bakersfield-based almond company called My Husband’s Nuts — became the public face of her famous family Jennifer Rogers looks at the charred page of a book outside her great-grandfather’s burned ranch house (Carlin Stiehl / For The Times) After the fire she received phone calls and emails from Will Rogers fans around the world — an outpouring of grief she never expected a man dropped off a huge bouquet of flowers to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum “because he just felt so sad and didn’t know what to do.” He’s still alive,” Rogers said of her great-grandfather which has more than 28,000 citizens in California said that “more than a century after his heyday we’re still talking about him because the things he said are timeless.” Rogers joked that “my ancestors didn’t come over on the Mayflower but they met the boat.” He never shied away from his Cherokee heritage at a time when many did not talk about it out of fear of persecution because Will Rogers is a singular figure in Cherokee history,” he said a docent at the ranch for more than two decades said it was challenging to keep Rogers’ memory alive even when the house was still standing Trigger!” — a mixed-up reference to the actor and rodeo star Roy Rogers (“What’s a typewriter?” one child whispered to his mother.) And he would lead kids to the dining room table Rogers’ petrified gum was still stuck to the wood Rogers, he would explain, was always gnawing on a wad of gum. Even during one of his most famous speeches, a nationwide broadcast dubbed “Bacon Beans and Limousines” recorded at the downtown L.A Then-President Hoover had invited him to speak. Wearing a cowboy hat and bow tie, Rogers chews his gum. He jokes. He’s amiable but outraged, delivering a blistering critique of the country’s high unemployment rate bread lines and uneven wealth distribution “It wasn’t the working class that brought this condition on at all,” he declared “It was the big boys themselves who thought that this financial drunk we were going through was going to last forever There’s as much money in the country as there ever was After working to boost interest in the ranch, Nemecek had been thrilled to learn that every week of the current school semester was booked with school field trips for the first time in years. And plans for centennial celebrations were just getting underway. Nemecek, an actor, author and native Oklahoman, said “the ironic thing is that so many people now are reawakened to Will because of the tragedy.” It remains unclear when Will Rogers State Historic Park will reopen. “The concrete that we are recycling is generally the foundation of a home,” Patrick Moes, a spokesman for the Army Corps, said in an email to The Times. The concrete, he said, is washed at its original property before being brought to the park, where it is ground into tiny pieces while being sprayed with water to mitigate the spread of dust. Concrete from the Palisades fire burn zone is crushed at Will Rogers State Historic Park. (Christopher Rosario / U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) Marty Greenstein, a State Parks spokesman, said in a statement to The Times that “this is not a waste disposal site — long-term storage is not occurring, nor is the site processing hazardous materials.” Tejada said the removal of debris from Rogers’ house and barn and other structures is expected to be completed by early June. California A parking lot at Will Rogers State Beach will be used as a staging area for potentially hazardous household waste removed from the Palisades fire zone, officials announced. In the park, roughly 400 trees, mostly non-native — and notoriously flammable — eucalyptuses, were considered part of the cultural historic landscape. The fire killed about 200, primarily around Inspiration Loop Trail, Tejada said. “Will had directed them to be planted to line all the pastures and roads,” Tejada said. “The benefit was they grow tall and straight. Back in the day, they were used as wind breaks, and they grow quickly.” Although State Parks officials are “trying to retain as many of the original trees as possible” because of their historical significance, there are ongoing discussions about whether different tree species should be planted, she said. The 99-year-old polo field, where Rogers played with friends including Walt Disney and Clark Gable, is still a grassy green oasis. But the announcer’s booth and goalposts burned. So did the equipment used to maintain what is the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles County, said Felice Densa, manager of the Will Rogers Polo Club, which has about 80 players. “I am determined to reopen this club, one way or the other,” she said. “We can rebuild the club. And we will. As soon as they start letting us in.” On a recent Thursday, Jennifer Rogers stepped gingerly across ruins of the ranch house. Jennifer Rogers looks at the burned remains of the ranch house. (Carlin Stiehl / For The Times) She pointed out what she recognized: Rusted springs from the bed in Will’s upstairs office that crashed through the ceiling. Yellow tiles from her great-aunt Mary’s bathroom. “My brother got married right in front of this tree,” she said, pointing to a charred trunk in front of the house. “I’m still in shock — still in shock.” Three chimneys still stand, and Rogers said there are plans to bring in scaffolding and secure them. The visitor center in Will’s garage has extensive damage but potentially could be rebuilt, she said. And the roughly 150 items rescued from the ranch house are stored in Sacramento. Rogrers hopes that, eventually, some kind of tribute to her great-grandfather will stand where the house once did. But, she said, the truth is, “I don’t really know what’s next.” Hailey Branson-Potts is a Metro reporter who joined the Los Angeles Times in 2011. But, of the film that was available to me, this game was the biggest sample of Rogers playing guard. So, we can at least get an idea of what he brings to the table as an interior lineman since the Raiders announced him as a guard One area where Rogers stands out in the running game is on down blocks Texas Tech runs a trap or wham concept where he is responsible for the nose tackle he has good leverage/knee bend to get his pads down and excellent hand placement controlling the nose with his inside hand on the chest and washing the nose down by putting his outside hand on the hip Rogers keeps his feet moving through contact to push the defender from the frontside A-gap to the backside B-gap there is room for improvement on this rep as Rogers false steps initially and has his helmet on the defender’s back instead of in front of the defender But that almost makes this rep even more encouraging as he could be more effective with improved technique Like this post-snap adjustment by Caleb Rogers, recognizes LB crashing hard inside & picks up the DT to create backside cutback lane #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/2F2WCBOzEg This next clip technically isn’t a down block since the Red Raiders call inside zone, where Rogers (lined up at right tackle this time) is originally responsible for climbing up to the backside linebacker. However, Iowa State has a stunt called where the backer crashes hard to the weak side of the formation while the nose tackle slants to the strong side The defense is trying to create some confusion up front but Rogers picks up on it and immediately gets his eyes inside when the linebacker comes downhill That allows the tackle to pick up the nose and he has another quality block to kick the nose inside and create a backside cutback lane for the running back That’s impressive awareness and physicality to execute the block Caleb Rogers finds work as the puller and makes a nice block in space against a DB to create a rushing lane #Raiders pic.twitter.com/khTjc9gLuE We’ll get another example of the Texas Tech product’s awareness as a run blocker this time as a puller on the backside of counter North Texas blitzes the strong-side linebacker and the strong-side defensive end pinches inside while the weak-side linebacker (No 32) wraps around to replace the defensive end on the edge 32 initially and makes sure the tight end picks up 32 before climbing up to the second level highlighting the awareness mentioned above he continues to look for work and sees the safety (No but the further offensive linemen get up the field the more they are at a disadvantage since they’re trying to block a better athlete in space But Rogers stays under control to push the safety out of the way creating a rushing lane for the running back Caleb Rogers with a nice pull to kick out the edge defender #Raiders pic.twitter.com/ac13ZtGuLc we’ll get a more traditional pull from Rogers he does a good job of staying under control right before making the block to stay in front of the more athletic defender he keeps his feet moving through contact to widen the edge to the numbers for a dominant rep I like how Caleb Rogers varies his punch timing in pass pro, can see how that throws off the pass-rusher's timing here #Raiders pic.twitter.com/k28367HC0L something that stands out about Rogers’ game is how he varies the timing of his punch That can be tough to show without diving into a bunch of different reps but the clip above is a good example of how it can impact a pass-rusher Rogers is patient with his hands and feet post-snap keeping his feet moving but matching the rusher’s tempo to avoid creating a lane for the rusher while simultaneously having his hands up and ready to shoot at any time the defender goes to work a cross-chop move he takes his outside hand away and then attacks leaving the rusher swatting at air and allowing the tackle to win the rep Defensive linemen are often taught to ‘defeat the hands meaning they start their pass-rush moves by trying to knock the offensive lineman’s hands down which gets thrown off if an o-lineman varies when he throws his punch like Rogers does Caleb Rogers with a great rep in pass pro vs a wide 9 technique #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/t5McqUIuZ7 we’ll end with a great rep in pass protection against a wide 9-technique What makes blocking that alignment difficult especially without any help via a chip block from the tight end or running back is that the tackle has to cover a lot of ground laterally without creating too much space inside while also gaining ground vertically to avoid getting beaten around the edge But Rogers does a good job of getting out of his stance and to the perfect spot where his outside foot splits the defender in half to protect the inside lane while simultaneously getting enough depth to protect the outside lane he has great timing with his punch again to make the first significant contact and stop the defender’s pass-rush move I thought Rogers stood out a little more at tackle than guard it’s a tough call on what his best position at the next level will be I think he is better in the running game at guard and stands out more in pass protection at tackle and it bodes well for his future that he can play both spots ROGERS -- A man died Friday after he jumped off an Interstate celebrating all things roots music including Southern Gospel We had the opportunity to sit down with roots artist Mike Rogers and hear about his history with this soul-centered genre of music.  Mike Rogers shocks many when they see and hear him playing guitar and singing Little do they know that guitar was his first instrument took an interest in music at a very early age.  By the end of high school Rogers was playing drums for a Nashville recording artist and in 2003 he was moving to Nashville to play drums with Country artist Craig Morgan.  By 2010 Rogers was recruited by Bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson to join his group Quicksilver.  That’s when he moved from behind the drums and to the front of the stage playing acoustic guitar and singing lead and background vocals.  Since then Mike has made a name for himself in the Country Gospel and Bluegrass genres.  Most recently he became a member of Ricky Skaggs’ group Kentucky Thunder as well as his own group Brothers of the Heart Tell us about your history with roots music.  I would say my history with roots music can go back to my Dad and him listening to Bluegrass music when I was growing up.  I have to admit one of my favorite artists was Ricky Skaggs.  The music was just so perfect and had so much heart How is roots music influencing culture today Roots music has and does have a big impact on culture today.  Music and the songs being written being the biggest recipient of that impact.  I would like to think that the songs I write (and sing)  reflect my love for Roots music (One of my favorties) and then I would move to maybe some James Taylor come to Nashville and visit the Station Inn!  That’ll give yah a crash course in roots music!  promote and celebrate the Gospel through music For Current Students For film/studio production with a minor in studio art at UA Little Rock Though initially drawn to engineering and robotics  “After realizing a passion in film and post production I really wanted to dive deep into media and film,” he said.  His first entry into the field came while filming weddings and events for a Latin photography company in Little Rock.  I was on my feet 12 hours filming this competition in the thick of July,” he recalled.  Rogers said it was an enriching experience that deepened his connection to the broader Latin community his resilience has carried him through numerous other opportunities “Adrian has operated a camera for ESPN+’s coverage of Trojan games, he’s shot videos for a real estate company, and worked as a wedding videographer,” said Dr. Simon Hawkins, director of UA Little Rock’s Donaghey Scholars Honors Program “He’s been an intern for KATV News and for the NPR Art & Letters Podcast but it doesn’t show the background work he had to put in to get each of these positions.” Hawkins said Rogers heard about a major film shooting in Little Rock and saw it as a chance to gain experience He reached out to his professors and found that none had connections to the production He kept asking around and eventually connected with someone on the set through a friend He was able to wrangle an unpaid internship as a production assistant.  Adrian showed the kind of tenacity and relentlessness that is necessary to be successful in such a competitive field,” Hawkins said.  Rogers ended up interning on the set of the western film “The Isolate Thief.” The cast included big names like Sean Bean from “The Lord of the Rings,” Odeya Rush from “Lady Bird,” Mackenzie Foy from “Interstellar,” and Joe Pantoliano from “Dexter.” being on a feature film set had been a childhood dream “Terminologies were thrown around precariously and learning the hierarchy of the film set was daunting,” he said I would be responsible for setting up tents The hardest part was balancing my finals during the day and working on the film at night.” Rogers said being a production assistant was a humbling experience that made him feel responsible for the overall environment on set One memory stands out: being tasked with cleaning up after horses “The reactions from the crew were hilarious as they were in awe that I was able to catch everything in my shovel effortlessly,” he said His educational journey also took him to Brisbane where he studied at the Griffith Film School through the University Studies Abroad Consortium Without knowing anyone and without guidance on class selection He ended up accidentally enrolling in both first- and second-year courses but the experience helped him form friendships and exposed him to cutting-edge film techniques and equipment Rogers worked on “Canary,” a documentary about an immigrant mother’s journey from Spain to Australia “It reminded me of my own mother and her adjustment from El Salvador to the United States,” he said “The editing portion was pretty difficult as I had to organize interview footage “Canary” was later picked up by Australia’s SBS On Demand and screened at the El Dorado Film Festival in Arkansas secretary of the League of United Latin American Citizens and helping organize events like movie nights and student film showcases “Mothball: Lost but Found,” explores hidden spots around the UA Little Rock campus like the observatory and planetarium Rogers credits much of his success to the university’s Donaghey Scholars Program  “They have been able to fund my education and support my passion for film,” he said Rogers said the biggest inspiration has been his mom  “She has constantly pushed me to find the best opportunity and to fight for what I want,’ he said “Being raised in a Spanish-speaking household has opened a lot of doors around campus and I am grateful that I have the ability to share stories both in English and Spanish.”  who invited him to attend the Turner Classic Movies Festival in Los Angeles an Instagram account where he’s shared highlights of his college life since 2021.  “From skits with friends to interviews at Arkansas Comic Con to highlighting my experiences in Australia Goo News has been with me to serve as a creative avenue to share my film passion with others,” Rogers said adding that Goo News is a “testimony of the various communities I am a part of and I find myself humbled by each and everyone’s story.” Rogers plans to take a year off to explore Arkansas’s film scene before potentially heading to graduate school “I have been part of many communities in my life but I have never found a home like the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,” he said where world-class professors engage closely with their students I am constantly so inspired by the classmates and friends I have met here and I am the biggest proponent for anyone to study here at this university.” UA Little Rock is a metropolitan research season The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced in March that it intends to keep the park closed this year to perform a large improvement project that will update the park and offer more amenities to campers The DNR intends to invest $5.4 million in the project which will feature upgrades to the toilet and shower building Like many other places in Northeast Michigan the campground also suffered damage from the recent ice storm and it is not known at this time if it will set the infrastructure project back There is no definitive date set for when the park will reopen next year Rogers City Mayor Scott McLennan said the closure of Hoeft State Park will likely hurt the local economy and the tourism the city depends on each year He said the campground is sold out each day during the camping season and most people come into Rogers City to shop McLennan said there are about 130 campsites at the park and most of them are filled with families each day He said when you consider how many people that totals at the end of the camping season that is a huge loss of money that businesses depend on to survive the slower winter months it will be damaging to our economy,” McLennan said “Local businesses have already had to review and probably adjust their budgets because they anticipate a loss of customers The state park has a huge impact on our economy and losing it for this year is a big deal to all of us.” The campground closure may also dissuade people from coming to Rogers City for a vacation or spending a weekend It could be a large problem during the annual Nautical Festival in town which draws tens of thousands of people from all over the country McLennan said the city government is working hard to find a way to create temporary camping sites for people He said the city is working with the Rogers City Area School System where the football and baseball fields are located to use the property for camping during large events McLennan said the city is also in talks with Posen officials and organizers of the annual Posen Potato Festival to see if the land it uses for temporary camping can also be used McLennan said the city government will continue to work hard to find more places for people to camp so they don’t have to miss the events that are planned “We are doing everything we can to open up spots for people to use,” he said Some people in Rogers City believe the DNR had other options it could have used to complete the project and still allow the park but little can be done about it at this point “I wish the DNR had scheduled it in the fall and then wrapped it up in the spring we wouldn’t have it closed,” he said we are doing everything we can to mitigate the fallout from this because it is not a good thing and will have a serious impact on Rogers City.” Hoeft isn’t the only state park that will be closed to campers this year Projects are also planned for Cheboygan State Park that will limit nearby options for people who want to visit the Rogers City area Season-long closures were also planned for Clear Lake State Park near Atlanta but the DNR pivoted on its plan and will now keep the parks open until Aug Steve Schulwitz He has created and edited video for DreamWorks had the confidence to make history at 24 years old because he was an investor at 12 As AFROTECH™ previously told you who made the decision to ensure Rogers received stocks for Christmas and his birthday instead of toys which included $200 worth of shares from companies such as General Motors and Commonwealth Edison His father also played a role in him connecting with Chicago IL’s first African American stock brocker While both his parents worked as lawyers — his mother even made history as the first Black woman to graduate from the University of Chicago Law School — not to mention his grandfather he never felt pressure to follow a similar footprint and was trusted to make his own decisions “I was in a good position to hopefully have a creative approach to small cap value investing when we started in 1983 I talk all the time about how having the role models of dynamic African-American entrepreneurs in Chicago who had started their companies at a young age really also gave me the energy and the confidence to start — primarily George Johnson with Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen and then John Johnson with Ebony and Jet They were just such giants on the Chicago scene and naturally I just couldn’t help but be impacted by their leadership,” Rogers said in an interview with AFROTECH™ Rogers’ aspirations early on with Ariel Investments was to be viewed as a “true expert” in selecting small undervalued securities and become the best small-cap value manager in the nation creating mutual funds for individual investors while managing pension funds and endowments with separate accounts Ariel Investments has been tested several times including during the stock market crash in 1987 it had also launched its flagship Ariel Fund which focused on small- and mid-cap companies “The true value investor buys more when everybody else is panicking and takes advantage of the bargain prices in a market downturn and that set us up for really good performance in 1988,” he mentioned As it relates to his position as a leader, this has been strengthened through strategic hiring. It would be his board and the hiring of Mellody Hobson in 1991 as president that would encourage Rogers to expand Ariel Investments’ vision transitioning it from a mutual fund company to a diversified global asset management firm Hobson also served as chairman of Ariel Investment Trust’s board of trustees and has now become co-CEO as well My vision has changed from being a one-product specialist to realizing that we need to have a balance of products that work well together in parts of the marketplace where we can make a difference do a good job for our customers in these newer areas that we’ve added to our infrastructure,” he mentioned Moving forward with this decision has played a part in the company’s longevity in the midst of challenges that would follow including the recent foreign tariffs imposed by the Trump administration it was the obstacles faced during the wake of COVID-19 in 2020 as well as the financial crisis between 2007 and 2009 “We went in and bought while everybody else was scared to death,” Rogers said regarding the 2007–2009 period “Added to our positions as they got weaker and weaker felt that we could buy them again at bargain prices which really set us up to be able to come out of the bottom with great performance and more reinforced confidence with our customers because we had now done it twice.” Today, Ariel Investments manages $12.9 billion in assets, including $1.48 billion under its private equity subsidiary, Ariel Alternatives, which launched Project Black in 2023 for middle-market companies. Additionally, the Ariel Fund is managing $2.4 billion in assets as of March 31, 2025, per information on its website. When considering the future of Ariel Investments, Rogers expresses his approval in passing on the torch to Hobson to serve as his successor. Over her 24-year tenure, he credits her for playing a hand in Ariel Investment’s international and global investment strategies and launching its emerging markets strategy in 2023 around Ariel Alternatives inception. Furthermore, within the past five years, Hobson hired a new chief financial officer, head of HR, and new general counsel, all of which are people of color and primarily women. That, Rogers says, will be “a competitive advantage going forward.” “They are already bringing on top teammates, hiring wonderful people to help us do these tough jobs during tough, tough times. This is not an easy time,” Rogers said. “But we’ve been able to just again build a world-class team because of Melody’s leadership and her ability to attract and attract these kinds of talented people.” AFROTECH™ has selected Rogers as a Legacy Leader for exemplifying a characteristic required on its annual Future 50 list. The spotlight is given to disrupters across the categories of future makers, visionary founders, changemakers, corporate catalysts, and dynamic investors. Rogers is recognized as a dynamic investor. “You ought to surround yourself with world-class talent, both in the company as well as the company’s board. That’s the way to differentiate yourself, and I think for up-and-coming entrepreneurs, you’d be surprised, you’ll go out and ask people for help and support. People are eager to join an advisory board or join a board, even if you’re the little guys,” Rogers mentioned. He added, “We’re the tiny guys compared to Fidelity and Vanguard. Our mutual fund company has board members like Eric Holder, the former attorney general, and Kim Liu, who’s the chief investment officer at Columbia’s Endowment, both unicorns in their fields. They were willing to come and join our little mutual fund family and help us try to compete with the big guys. So I tell that to all the entrepreneurs. Surround yourself with great people.” Samantha Dorisca is a Houston-based journalist and photographer whose mission is to impact communities through the gift of storytelling using the written word or visual media. might be the winningest high school girls basketball assistant in Mississippi history       If he’s not then it wouldn’t take long to call the roll of the ones who had more wins       Rogers was a part of 452 wins three state championships and two Overall Tournament titles in his 19 years as an assistant coach for legendary coach Jan Sojourner at Jackson Academy       Sojourner retired this season as the third winningest coach in Mississippi history after 45 years and Rogers was on the bench besides Sojourner for the past two decades       In addition to all the championships JA had a remarkable 97-game winning streak against MAIS competition from 2016-2018 will embark on the next chapter of his life as he has been named the head girls basketball coach at Central Hinds Academy He will be the director of student spiritual life at Central Hinds       “Coach Rogers was the only coach we interviewed for our opening,” Central Hinds head of school Billy Wayne Hankins said and we are so fortunate to have him at CHA Everyone knows how qualified he is as a basketball coach but what is more important is he is a great person Ronnie will be coaching our girls basketball team but just as importantly he will be a Christian leader on our campus.”      “When Coach Hankins reached out to me on April 4 I had every intention of saying thank you but I am not interested,” Rogers said after speaking briefly with him I decided to at least meet with him and listen to what he had to say After visiting with Coach Hankins for 1.5 hours on April 8 I think we both knew that this was a good fit for me and for him I called him on Friday April 11 and told him I would be accepting the job on Monday.”       It was a tough decision for Rogers       “I was truly content to work with Coach Gantz and to remain at JA for the entirety of my career,” Rogers said “He is an incredible coach and one of my great friends in coaching was knowing I wasn’t going to get to coach with Coach Gantz.”       Rogers a Starkville High and Mississippi State graduate feels fortunate to be able to learn and work with one of the most successful coach in Mississippi history       “I have been so blessed to work under Coach Sojourner and alongside so many great coaches at JA,” Rogers said “I’ve been able to compete and learn from so many other coaches in our league and abroad I have been involved in so many big games sitting on Coach Sojourner’s bench and I’ll bring that big game experience with me to Raymond.”       Sojourner credits Rogers for being a huge reason why she and the Lady Raiders were so successful over the past two decades Rogers had great input on the offense and scouting and also implemented a matchup zone that JA used on occasion       “Ronnie does a great job of being consistent in working every day to get the girls better as players,” Sojourner said “He understands what it takes to win and has a great mind and feel for the game He will use different schemes offensively and defensively that will blend with his team’s personnel Ronnie has played a huge part in helping make JA’s basketball program successful I am very appreciative and grateful for all his time I know he will do an excellent job at Central Hinds       “Coach Rogers will do a great job at Central Hinds and the school is lucky to have him,” said Gantz who spent 10 years at Central Hinds and won two state championships and reached the Overall Tournament semifinals the past two seasons and he has a lot of talented players to build around.”       Former players at JA talked about Rogers’ dedication       “Ronnie was always there weekends – whenever I or anyone wanted to get in the gym for extra reps he was always there to help you grow as a player,” said JA All-State forward Conley Chinn Sojourner and Rogers win two consecutive Overall titles and graduated in 2017 and played college basketball at Belmont “He invested time and effort into the details – training proper form in every aspect of the game Ronnie pays attention to the details many people overlook I always knew that he wanted each player to build a foundation of skills before anything else and attention to details when it came to player development he’d share one of his diet cokes with me if I had a good practice.” “Coach Rogers has been a constant in my life since the eighth grade when he first coached me,” former JA point guard Mollie Blair Baioni played at Mississippi College and finished her fifth year as the girls basketball coach at Bayou Academy in Cleveland. “That year we ended up winning the junior high district championship and it is still one of my favorite memories as a player After losing to Pillow three times that year we were able to beat them when it mattered in the championship game Coach Rogers taught us to believe in ourselves and to not let losses define us and it paid off. As an assistant coach for my varsity years and would even throw out a joke here and there I have countless memories that I can think of and still laugh about today. He was always in charge of scouting the other teams and truly did a great job with that It really mattered to him that we were as prepared as possible for any game we faced.  Coach Rogers turned into a friend and mentor to me he let me help coach his junior high teams during the summer to give me some experience He was also always a great listening ear through the good times and bad times of becoming an adult I can always count on Coach Rogers to send me any film and scouting reports that I need. He’s someone that you can always count on and he’ll do anything he can to help you in any way.”       “I am thankful to have played under Coach Rogers,” said Emily McNair Holmes Sojourner and Rogers win two consecutive Overall titles and graduated in 2017 and played college soccer at Mississippi College “He was always willing to work with me outside if our scheduled practice time He cares a lot about the game but even more about the players He goes above and beyond to get to know his players individually and help make them reach their full potential       “Coach Rogers has been coaching me for the last six years,” said JA rising senior guard Jayden Rhymes Learning just how to do the basic stuff has improved my game tremendously he has always told me I would do big things and I just had to have the confidence and work ethic he knew that we were a special team and never doubted us We won the championship that year because he always believed in us Something I’ve learned from him from just watching him is to just be yourself and have confidence I know Coach Rogers will do amazing things as the head coach at Central Hinds.”        This isn’t Rogers first time that he has been a head coach He was head coach for one year at Manchester Academy in Yazoo City and one year at East Rankin Academy before coming to JA Rogers was also an assistant at JA from 2000-2002 for then JA boys basketball coach Bill Ball Rogers also has been the ninth-grade girls coach at JA for the past 20 seasons       “I really enjoyed my years working with Ronnie,” said Ball who won 599 games and two Overall championships at JA Starkville Academy and Hartfield Academy in 22 seasons and now is an assistant junior high and high school coach at Hartfield “Ronnie has always had his teams super prepared for each game and season He was a tremendous asset for Coach Sojourner He not only did a great job with the girls at JA but did a fabulous job with his East Rankin teams Ronnie’s true legacy in coaching is the impact he has made on every boy and girl that played for him I’m thankful for our time together at JA and lasting friendship we have developed.”       Rogers is just as excited about being the spiritual leader of the school       “My first job out of college was in the campus ministry at Ole Miss at RUF (Reformed University Fellowship),” Rogers said “I do have a master’s in divinity (at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson) and I have certainly used it at JA and I want to expand on that at Central Hinds While I’m sad to leave so many great students and friends at JA I truly felt like I was going to be Jonah going to Tarshish instead of Nineveh as it became quite apparent that Central Hinds and this coaching position was what God had been preparing me for all these years.”       Rogers was also much more than an assistant basketball coach at JA He was head golf coach for six years (and coached now PGA Tour professional Wilson Furr) and an assistant tennis coach for 20 years       Although Central Hinds had its best two-year run in school history with back to back MAIS Class 4A state championships and back to back Overall semifinal finishes the Lady Cougars have no returning starters from those talented teams “Coach Gantz and those before him always had hard-nosed competitive teams that you better be ready to play,” Rogers said “There is great pride in Raymond have to write a blog post about it the next morning “What is happening?” When you have to scroll through an episode of Everybody’s Live to look for music-related content the entire experience feels even more surreal than it otherwise would Last night’s episode was a prime example because you get to a certain point that really is John Cale and Maggie Rogers talking about dental surgery.” And that really is all the members of Phish Mulaney has a regular bit where he’ll look through a telescope and see something crazy happening in someone else’s window he found an apartment that looked exactly like the Seinfeld set — presumably it was the Seinfeld set (I’m glad Mulaney narrated the entire thing because I do not know the names of Phish members.) Eerie Twin Peaks-ass keyboard drones played under the entire thing and the editors chopped it up into something mind-shredding were the musical guests on last night’s episode of Everybody’s Live and they got some time on Mulaney’s couch before they got around to performing together The episode’s theme was this: “Can major surgery be fun?,” and its other guests included Marc Maron and Rogers has apparently had some recent dental issues involving errant microphones so they clearly had some fun getting into their histories There was also a brief moment where Mulaney seemed to be fishing trying to get Cale to tell him that he’s a true avant-garde artist of the current day Mulaney also fanned out about Cale’s viola scrapes on “The Black Angel’s Death Song.” John Cale & Maggie Rogers perform "Shark-Shark" on Everybody's Live with John Mulaney. pic.twitter.com/xTwZFWEeKs — Netflix (@netflix) May 1, 2025 John Cale’s album POPtical Illusion is out now on Domino The most important stories and least important memes A celebration of life to honor Roy will be held at a later date Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are made the son of Harvey and Bernice (Petersen) Rogers he married Jacquelyn “Jackie” Sternberg in Davenport in a memorable double wedding alongside Jackie’s sister Roy was incredibly proud of their 54-year marriage He graduated from Davenport Central High School and spent his career as a painter and paper hanger for Union Local 676 until his retirement he served six years in the Army Reserves during the 1970s Roy worked with various dirt track racing teams over the years He also loved playing golf with his close friends never missing a chance to perfect his swing or share a good laugh finding great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren his wife of over 54 years; daughters Michelle (Jacob) Acri of East Moline and Carolyn (Tony) Meyer of Killeen He is also survived by his siblings Bud Rogers of Wyoming He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Online remembrances may be expressed at www.hmdfuneralhome.com.  Stigma surrounding mental health is a significant problem for overall well-being and it's a barrier for treatment Rogers Behavioral Health shares the different ways that stigma has a negative impact on mental health and treatment: If you or someone you care about is experiencing any of these symptoms, support is available.
