with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission
told WTOP the affected communities include Clinton
“We will be doing some emergency work starting late Wednesday night into Thursday,” Riggins said
The work will take a 36-inch main out of service
and in order to maintain enough water pressure for public safety
Riggins said about 40,000 households are being asked to only use water for essentials
While the repairs to an aging water main take place
Riggins said residents are being asked to:
“At this point we are expecting the essential-only water use to last only about three days,” Riggins said
But she added that’s the ideal completion time
Weather or other unexpected conditions could change that
we expect we can get through this emergency” without interruptions to service
because the WSSC’s fiber-optic monitoring system detected breaks within the steel wires that serve to reinforce the prestressed concrete cylinder pipes at the main
located underneath Dower House Road just south of Maryland Route 4
That means the pipe is losing its structural integrity,” Riggins said
The request for affected residents to restrict their water use for essential purposes only is designed to keep enough water pressure in the system to avoid having to declare a boil-water advisory
WSSC would sample water to ensure it’s safe to drink
More information is on WSSC’s website, including an interactive map that shows what neighborhoods are affected

Prince George's County residents urged to limit water use during major pipe replacementby John Gonzalez
ROSARYVILLE, Md. (7News) — WSSC Water has issued an essential-water-use-only request for 40,000 customers
WSSC is also reporting an increase in usage and they are urging residents to limit use for essential purposes only to avoid a boil water advisory
This conservation request will continue until crews replace a failing section of a 36-inch-diameter prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) water transmission main
Customers in the following areas are impacted: Clinton, Rosaryville, Marlton, Brandywine, Accokeek and Portions of Ft. Washington. To check if you are located in the affected area, click hereand type your address in the interactive map
The water company says H2O quality is not impacted by this essential-use-only request
Water remains safe for all use but customers are being recommended to conserve as much as possible
Following the guidance below could avoid a Boil Water Advisory (BWA) for the impacted areas and help preserve water for fire protection as the main is taken out of service to safely replace the failing section
crews will start work to replace the section of the main and will work around the clock
Work is expected to take three days to complete
The essential-water-use-only request will be lifted when the water distribution system returns to normal – ensuring fire protection and water supply for customers
This work schedule may be impacted by weather and other construction-related factors
The damaged 16-foot-long section is under Dower House Road
WSSC Water installed an Acoustic Fiber Optic (AFO) cable within this pipe
continuously monitors the integrity of large-diameter PCCP and provides notification to trained personnel if a potential problem is detected
WSSC Water began installing AFO in 2007 and has the longest active AFO monitoring system in the country at 110 miles
the AFO system has alerted WSSC Water to break within the reinforcing steel wires that help maintain the structural integrity of this concrete pipe
When the number of breaks reaches a certain threshold
WSSC Water will proactively replace the pipe
it is time to replace this section of this pipe before it fails
This technology is expected to prevent the “River Road incident” from happening again
The River Road pipe in 2008 did not have this technology
WSSC Water had no warning -- it just broke and turned River Road in Potomac into a river
This pipe being worked on this week in Prince George’s has the technology that now gives a heads up to be taken out of service and fixed before the road has a chance to be underwater
We have the address for the funeral home & the family on file

PONCHATOULA — Scores of runners and walkers ranging in age from about eight to 80 congregated on the sprawling
mostly tree-shaded expanses of the Rosaryville Catholic retreat center for the annual Nun Run and Anything Goes Cook-Off on Saturday
Those competing in the various running events followed trails wandering among the pines
oaks and other trees that cover the 1,700 acres comprising Rosaryville

Callais said two sessions are held at Camp Kateri
and she said that both sessions this year have already been filled
“We have so much demand for our camp that next year we are going to add a third session,” she said
The camp is led by Marie Arnone and is staffed by trained leaders and local high school and collegiate counselors
The purpose of the Nun Run and the Anything Goes cook-Off is to support Camp Kateri
Callais said proceeds from last year’s event were used to update the camp to enhance the camping experience
painting the exteriors of all camp buildings
upgrading the many roads on the campus and enhancing lighting systems
The campus includes dorms and dining halls for the campers who experience swimming
bicycle riding and other general camp activities
“Our counselors are the heart of the experience
and we think they enjoy Camp Kateri as much as the campers,” Callais said

The number of vocations to the religious life has dwindled over the years but Sister Brauer said there is still a place for the religious in today’s society
we want to do this because it is so important
We still have some who are willing to dedicate their lives to this great mission,” she said
