Hudgens was arrested for the 11th time in Chicago on May 1
Buckets n Blooms and Dee Dee’s have officially joined forces on Main Street Rockton
Two of eight mayors from the Rockford region who were said to be backing a movement to restore executive powers to the Winnebago County chairman's office say that is not true
local officials called for the restoration of the chairman's powers
saying the effort was backed by the mayors and village presidents of Machesney Park
Roscoe Village President Carol Gustafson and South Beloit Mayor Tom Fitzgerald said they are not taking a position on the hotly contest debate
Two others — Rockton Mayor John Peterson and Winnebago Village President Frank Eubank — did not return phone calls and email messages to discuss their support
and another two — Machesney Park Village President Steve Johnson and Cherry Valley Village President David Schroeder — confirmed their backing
More: Opponents accused of 'slow-rolling' efforts to restore Winnebago County chairman's powers
Gustafson said she wasn't ready to advocate for or against a change in county leadership
"I thought it was premature to say the village of Roscoe is signing on to x
z recommendation when the whole issue had not been vetted
explored at the County Board level," Gustafson said
"To say I am picking a side in this is not true."
South Beloit Mayor Tom Fitzgerald also said he wasn't willing to choose a side either
Fitzgerald said he does not "have enough knowledge on the way Winnebago (County) handles our business to give" a definitive answer
Many of chairman's powers and authorities — especially over the power to supervise
hire and fire — were curtailed during a dispute with the previous chairman eight years ago
Some County Board Members say the changes rendered the chairman's office a largely ceremonial position despite being a countywide elected official
Opponents say concentrating power in the hands of a single elected office
Now leaders of Roscoe and South Beloit say they aren't willing to take a side in the debate
And Rockton Mayor John Peterson and Winnebago Village President Frank Eubank did not return phone and email

ROSCOE — For people who knit or crochet, the last Saturday in April is Local Yarn Store Day
a time to celebrate being in quick reach of a brick-and-mortar supply shop
this year — for the first time in five years — yarnies in the Rockford region can again celebrate having a local shop
A Skein Away is opening at 10 a.m
is just west of the Illinois 251 intersection
across from Fiesta Cancun in a commercial park anchored by Miracle-Ear
a fourth-generation knitter and first-time entrepreneur
of Shirland comes from the world of managing corporate software
first in the health care industry and then in finance
while maintaining a home with her husband and their 8-year-old daughter
she’s been turning to making things with yarn
“Fiber arts have always been my escape — a retreat from the daily life stress
every woven thread brings me back to center,” Wirth told followers on Instagram in February as she introduced her business
She explains the name this way: “I want my shop to be that getaway for you
too — a place where you can find your people
The last local yarn store in the Rockford region was Knit One Purl Two
which was open from July 2014 to July 2020 on the 6400 block of East Riverside Boulevard in Rockford
As excitement and support for A Skein Away has spread on Facebook
Knit One Purl Two’s owners reached out to Wirth and gave her elegant accessories they had used to display finished pieces
Since the closing of this store during the COVID pandemic
finding the closest yarn shop has meant driving at least 40 minutes to Freeport
or an hour to South Elgin or Monroe or Stoughton
Wirth’s plans to open A Skein Away took shape last year after a close friend
who survived cancer and has multiple sclerosis
found great joy climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
“what’s my excuse for not doing something that brings me that much joy and is that life-changing?”
she wanted to fill the shop with specialty yarns like the hand-dyes and imports she seeks out at local shops and regional festivals
But a few weeks after getting keys to the shop
the 80-year-old crafts and fabric superstore
“That made me rethink some of the inventory I was going to carry,” Wirth said
referring to much of her initial product mix as budget-heavy
“I now wanted to make sure people who are used to Joann’s prices have a place to find something of quality as well.”
The curated yarn mix at A Skein Away evolved to include acrylic blends in addition to luxury brands
Half the yarns are from the United States; imported yarns come from the Shetland Islands
Many of the U.S.-made yarns are from independent dyers in the Midwest
including some in southern Wisconsin within an hour’s drive of the shop
The colorful yarns — whether you use them with needles to knit
or a hook to crochet — can be used to make everything from garments and clothing accessories to home décor items such as pillows
Having grown up with a mom who knit many clothes for her
including the sweater she’s wearing in the photo with this story
Wirth gravitates toward knitting projects you can wear: pullover sweaters
One of Wirth’s favorites is a petite shawl (an accessory known as an Italian bandana)
that she recently knit with yarn custom-dyed by a small company in Minnesota to the spring colors of Rockford’s Anderson Japanese Gardens
“I sent them some pictures and this is what they came up with,” Wirth said
proudly showing off the gentle variegation and speckling in the yarn
This kit is called Forest City; it sells for $32
Wirth asked this company to dye yarn to the colors of Hononegah Community High School in Rockton
The result is a sock set kit called Go Hononegah; it sells for $42
The yarn in both of these locally inspired kits is a blend of super–wash merino wool and nylon
but durable—perfect for socks or any piece that will get heavy wear
I refer to it as a ‘workhorse blend,’” Wirth said
A Skein Away will be offering beginner classes in both knitting and crochet
as well as advanced classes in each art for people looking to expand their skill set
For intermediate-level knitters who want to use up leftover yarns
or anyone who wants to learn how to play with color without committing to a huge project
Wirth is stocking themed collections of small repeating patterns in design sets called Doodle Decks
These mix-and-match idea starters range from $12 to $24
It’s a standout example of how creative you can get with the bands of tiny motifs that come in these chart decks
You’ll find printed patterns at A Skein Away but with the growing popularity of online pattern websites like Ravelry
Wirth expects many shoppers will arrive with a pattern already in hand
looking to see and feel the yarn called for
Woolamena or Purl — voting for favorite name will take place the first two days the shop is open
The prized sheep statue was a gift from the owner of Nina’s Department and Variety Store
this sheep had guarded Nina’s yarn department
Soon as Wirth told its story on social media
there will be plenty of fun to leave customers in stitches
Wirth has events like Yarn Shop Bingo planned
where a $10 reservation gets you two game cards
a night of yarny puns and the chance to win notions
Among the notions Wirth is stocking are stitch markers her husband
His creativity with woodwork and a laser cutter includes markers with Illinois- and Wisconsin-shaped charms
plus some with sassy — and naughty — notes
A Skein Away is the second needlework-supply shop to open in the Winnebago County town of Roscoe in a year. In April 2024, Bee Youtiful Sip and Stitchery
a boutique for cross-stitch and hand-embroidery supplies
Bee Youtiful has continued to draw shoppers locally and from across the Midwest
“It is exciting to see Roscoe become a destination for crafters
especially when many major retailers have cut back on craft supplies
and personal service that can be found in local shops,” said Brett Casanova-Rini
As videos on social media are renewing interest in a handwork technique called duplicate stitch — embroidery on top of knitting — Casanova-Rini and Wirth are paying attention
Both shop owners confirmed they’re working on a Bee Youtiful Sip and Stitchery and A Skein Away collaboration to bring the how-tos of this art locally too
a Rockford resident who has been crocheting and/or knitting every day for over half a decade
said Wednesday afternoon after hearing about A Skein Away
Liddell paused the interview to enter the grand opening time in her phone calendar
“When I started crocheting Knit One Purl Two helped me
It was lovely; you could go and sit and just bring your stitching in the store and get great advice,” said Liddell
a retired elementary school teacher who will tell you that no matter how closely you pay attention on YouTube
I had to get on I-90 and drive an hour into South Elgin
I am so happy to have another store coming that’s so much closer.”

Business owners are pinpointing what would make Roscoe a great place to live and work and what strategies and developments would draw businesses and families to the community
A group of over 30 Roscoe business owners got together at the Village Hall on April 16
to begin the first step in the process of transforming Roscoe
Village President Carol Gustafson greeted the participants with a challenge - “it begins with you.”
The workshop was conducted by David Sidney, CEO and founder of Place Foundry
Place Foundry specializes in partnering with businesses and public organizations in creating and developing transformative and exceptional developments that enrich communities
The goal of the new Business District Alliance is to promote, and enhance Roscoe, beginning with the Main Street corridor
Sidney tasked the business owners to pinpoint what would help make Roscoe a great place to live and work
what strategies and developments would draw businesses and families to the community
He asked what each participant would be willing to do to move the process forward
The question was answered with dozens of ideas and enthusiastic support for the project
Trustee Michael Wright introduced James Packard Sr
The two have been meeting frequently during the last two years to talk about what is involved in creating a vibrant appealing community
Packard is a retired executive and area philanthropist. He has been a leader in making Beloit 2000 a success
Packard said, after talking to Mike (Wright), he got enthused about how to draw people to the community. “First you need to file for a 501(c)(3),” he said
“This project needs to be separate from government
It will be a challenge.” He encouraged the group to “stay enthused
Participants agreed that the fresh ideas exchanged would enhance and promote Roscoe as a safe

I WAS A JUNIOR when I crossed the threshold into Assistant Professor of Music Larry Weng’s classroom
and a familiar blend of excitement and apprehension washed over me
Surrounded by this pianist’s many global accolades and accomplishments in classical music
My musical foundation wasn’t built on young
disciplined practice and recitals but was a gift from my mother
whose voice had the power to penetrate both silence and darkness
It was this unique connection to music that I wanted to explore further and refine with Dr
Roscoe Bell practices piano as mentor Larry Weng teaches him life lessons beyond the music
The first task was choosing a piece for me to learn
which I quickly discovered was more complicated than simply picking one off a list
Weng first challenged me to articulate why I wanted to play music
I tried to explain that I always yearned to play something that mirrored the complexities of life — both shadows and light
but my why probably sounded more like an existential crisis
The unspoken depth of human emotion and struggle is what I sought to find in music — you can hear someone’s heart shatter or soar without a single word uttered
familiarly known as the “Moonlight Sonata,” as it matched my desire
That concluded the first lesson: defining your why
each session bringing yet another hill to overcome
panic ensued with every misstep; I was making desperate attempts at fixing things
forcing me in that moment to pause when everything in me just wanted to push blindly forward
Lesson two taught me something profound about approaching life’s obstacles: Observe
understand and then proceed with intention
Amid all the sessions about how to play notes better emerged another kind of lesson
Weng’s office one day bubbling with stress and ready to pop
my professor didn’t give much advice at all except
“Breathe.” And so we did together … just for a second … just long enough for tranquility to settle over every part of me cowering behind layers of anxiety and frustration
“Breathe,” he whispered again as the fire died down
“Whenever you start to feel overwhelmed,” he told me
Weng’s mentoring lessons — observing why you’re doing something
addressing mistakes with carefulness and taking deep breaths — transformed my view of not only what is possible in piano
I soon dreamed of what was possible at Wake Forest
led me to organize students and create the inaugural Wakeville Arts Festival my senior year
A celebration of art and community that demanded us to understand our collective why
a strategic problem-solving and logistics planning method and the courage to breathe through any kind of challenge thrown at us
every error we corrected along the way made this dream tangible
transforming it into life’s melodies observed and celebrated by a quarter of our student body in April 2023
Weng’s mentorship was something extraordinary and went beyond the usual boundaries
Weng didn’t just teach me; he traveled alongside me as we discovered expression and enlightenment
Weng has been a guiding light to follow not only through musical notes
but also in illuminating the intricate steps of existence itself
a psychology and music graduate and a second-year Wake Forest Fellow
He is a program coordinator for the Program for Leadership and Character while aiming for a career as a physician

Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person
(WBMA) — A 22-year-old Birmingham man is dead after what police described as a 'shootout' took place on Roscoe Avenue Wednesday evening
South Precinct Officers heard shots fired in the Kingston community
When they responded they found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound
He has been identified as Demarious Antwon Cherry
"Our officers said they heard rounds being fired from different guns
It was chaos when our officers arrived."
A couple of people have been taken into custody for questioning
"These individuals chose to fire 40 rounds in a densely populated neighborhood
Police say they should have surveillance footage to look at thanks to the housing authority

— A family is grappling with the devastating loss of Demarious Cherry
who was caught in the crossfire of a shootout on Roscoe Avenue
recounted the harrowing moment she learned her brother was shot
"We heard gunshots and we jumped down to the ground," she said
"They was like light skin dude with the dreads so I got my phone called his phone three times and he did not answer."
Moore found her brother lying on the ground
"She said mama Demarious is dead," Tiffany Moore said
"I said he can't be dead because he was just in his room."
Cherry had left home to walk to the store when he was caught in the shootout
Tiffany Moore was approached by a Birmingham police officer at the scene who informed her of her son's passing
I couldn't believe it," she said

The family described Cherry as a loving son
"He'd go out of his way for everyone to make sure everyone was good," Jacquline Moore said
Cherry was in the process of starting a nonprofit with his mentor
aimed at bringing mentors into neighborhoods in need of positive influences
Powanda recalled Cherry's infectious enthusiasm
"You look around outside and there's not a lot of excitement and enthusiasm out there and he always had excitement and enthusiasm," Powanda said
He just had this real positive aura."
Demarious Cherry's funeral will be held at Church of the Highlands Woodlawn Campus on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The Birmingham Police Department has not provided an update on the investigation since the night of the shooting
Two people were initially taken into custody for questioning
but Mindy Barnes and her dog Roscoe prove you can rescue it
I thank God he found me before it was too late," said Barnes
Roscoe's story begins in April 2024 in Hugo
He was discovered days later and taken in by the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals
who posted his story and picture on Facebook
"They posted they weren't going to be able to salvage both arms and were going to discuss quality of life
the 6-month-old puppy faced a double amputation
He made sure I understood it wasn't going to be an easy job and that there was so much care that was going to go into a dog having just two legs," said Barnes
Barnes had that plan and the green light to rescue Roscoe
It turns out she has a heart for cases like his
I've taken in the animals that no one seems to want."
"I had anticipated carrying this dog for the rest of his life
They told me that dogs carry 70-90% of their body weight on their front legs
and I was just going to carry the dog everywhere he needed
he decided he needed to go outside to do his business and refused to let us hold him
When 2 News Anchor Julie Chin asked what has happened since then
"He's learning to do it one foot at a time
so it looks like he's running or pitter-pattering
"He outgrew it because he didn't stay the 20 pounds we suspected
So we have another wheelchair on order," said Barnes
and the "Rollin' with Roscoe" Facebook fan club is helping to cover some of that
Barnes isn't the only one who has fallen in puppy love
Roscoe often helps at Oklahoma Alliance for Animals events
"He is a ham; every time we do a public showing for OAA or Roscoe goes out
we seem to carry a chip on our shoulder; this dog does not
He survived his first incident and keeps rolling through the rest," says Barnes
All thanks to the best friend he found in Barnes
who was willing to take a chance in order to give Roscoe his second chance at life
"I hope his story teaches other people to give them a chance- don't assume there won't be more to the story," said Barnes
If you'd like to make a donation toward Roscoe's new wheelchair or follow his journey, we've linked the Rollin' with Roscoe Facebook page here

But I had been a fan since he made his daytime debut in the ’80s as Ryan’s Hope mobster Joe Novak (a character to whom General Hospital godfather Sonny Corinthos owes an un-repayable debt of gratitude)
Born had already made the leap to primetime — in 1984’s Paper Dolls opposite his future The City leading lady Morgan Fairchild — and come back to daytime
reprising his role of One Life to Live’s Machiavellian Mitch Laurence
That the former cult leader is probably the character for which Born is best known isn’t surprising in the least
returning over and over again to wreak havoc
but because it played to one of Born’s greatest strengths: his charisma

Born — as you’d expect — had already gone down in soap history as one of the genre’s greats
shocked that he won’t turn up on General Hospital next month as the don who finally usurps Sonny’s power
That Born won’t be doing that, not to put too fine a point on it, sucks. But rather than focus on what could have been and will never be, perhaps we can celebrate what actually was, via the below photo gallery of some of his most memorable roles
