the league has added seven teams this year
giving more than 100 additional kids the access and opportunity to develop a passion for the game of baseball and create memories that will last a lifetime

“For these kids to have access to resources from MLB teams is huge
These kids have a chance to learn the game
to become leaders and great teammates and have a blast playing baseball.”
One of the unique experiences that Play Ball Detroit participants enjoy each season is a parade on the field at Comerica Park

where Rosedale-Grandmont Little Leaguers joined more than 400 Play Ball Detroit participants and family members as they walked around the field before the game and were recognized on the Comerica Park videoboard
“For them to be able to be on the same field as Tigers players
that’s a dream come true for a lot of them.”
In addition to the Opening Day festivities and the parade at Comerica Park
the Rosedale-Grandmont Little League was also the first organization this season to receive a field cleanup from Tigers representatives and local volunteers on April 12
The field cleanup featured more than 50 people contributing about two hours of work apiece
totaling approximately 100 hours of volunteer cleanup work
Future field cleanups include Balduck Park for Eagle Sports Club on April 30

Both developments are supported by the Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF)
which helps developers foster vibrant and safe places for residents to walk

officially a town in 1875 and incorporated into Kansas City
Rosedale’s life effectively began with the establishment of the Kansas City Roller Mill Company in April 1875
the roller mill primarily made iron railroad rails and spikes
the Rosedale neighborhood has been the home to wave after wave of American migration
and its businesses and restaurants are a testament to change
The neighborhood is today bounded by Interstate 35 on the northwest
West 47th Avenue on the south and State Line Road on the east
and with a population of 6,670 as of the most recent census
these days Rosedale is dominated by the The University of Kansas School of Medicine and hospital complex (more on this institution below)
The town-slash-neighborhood’s fortunes waxed and waned
and diverse populations have moved through the community
all while it has participated in the great moments of the nation’s history
Read on to learn more about Rosedale’s history and what local institutions are worth checking out in this surprisingly varied corner of Kansas City
the KU hospital complex has been a fixture in Rosedale
KU even offered a “Preparatory Medical Course” in the town in 1880
for those wishing to learn more about the KU Medical Center’s history
The Clendening Library & Museum houses instruments from 19th and 20th century American medicine as well as materials that depict ancient
The museum also houses exhibits on American Civil War medicine
It is also home to some very rare and interesting items
including a plaster cast of the Stele of Hammurabi
is one of the earliest legal codes ever discovered
it honors the soldiers of World War I and is based on Paris’ Arc de Triomphe
The arch was designed by Rosedale resident John LeRoy Marshall and was dedicated in 1923
a monument was added under the Arch to honor the soldiers of World War II and of the Korean and Vietnam wars
a volunteer-maintained network of about four miles of singletrack
For those wanting a space more for sporting than reflection, to the west and not far from these two parks is Rosedale Park
a 55-acre athletic complex with lighted and non-lighted softball fields
skate park and two 18-hole disc golf courses
The parks above are not far from Southwest Boulevard
On that strip is Dagwood's Cafe Diner, a local landmark that’s been dishing diner favorites since 1938. A locals’-favorite breakfast and lunch spot
many customers have dined at Dagwood’s since their early years and now bring their kids and grandkids
This is your classic greasy spoon: breakfast favorites
Also tops are their open-face roast beef sandwiches
there are two legends in this one neighborhood: Rosedale Bar-B-Q and Joe’s KC
Also on Southwest Boulevard, Rosedale Bar-B-Q celebrated 90 years in 2024 and is the oldest continuously-running BBQ restaurant in the metro
This establishment is known for founder Anthony Rieke's Southwestern-style sauce
They dish all the expected favorites and also sell meat by the pound
Down on the other side of Rosedale is the original, gas station-sited, award-winning Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que
This enterprise has grown to three locations and now offers a mail order business
but the original location is the way to go in many diners’ opinions
but it all smokes down to one thing: outstanding slow-cooked meats served on buns or platters
People love their Rocket Pig and Z-Man sandwiches
Also on the south end of the neighborhood: should-be-world-famous Gus’s Fried Chicken
In business for over 60 years and launched in Mason
the joint is now in 12 states and puts a fight against any Kansas City fried chicken
Gus’s is a piece-and-plate establishment: two- and three-piece meals with sides of your choosing
For plant-slash-coffee lovers (or lovers of just either): Garden House Café is a must-visit on Southwest Boulevard
Almost a holistic retreat for its lush calmness
this cafe also pours specialty coffees and sells home goods
plant accessories and even office accouterments
Looking for another fun surprise? Located inside the shop, in a literal closet, is Supply Closet: A nook business packed with pens
Looking for a boozy sojourn? Take in the new-wave cocktail scene with a Southwest vibe at Sagebrush
You know you wish you were there right now
Next up is Three Bees Pottery & Coffee Shop
or even “like a vacation to Mexico.” This coffee-and-pottery spot sells hand-crafted Mexican telavara pottery and blown-glass artwork as well as home décor and local-made jewelry
you’ll find a full roster of coffee and espresso but also authentic Mexican pastries and even killer tamales and a birra burrito
Is it really the Midwest without a large, family-style Mexican restaurant? (Hint: no.) Taqueria Mexico #4 is one of the oldest Mexican restaurants in KC and very much a local favorite
though this location is less old-style and leans just a little more into the TVs
this is a big-menu restaurant with page after page of specials
Rosedale is also home to great Vietnamese cuisine. Vietnam Cafe 39’s menu offers all the faves (pho
the atmosphere and decor have that thing that can’t be replicated: strip-mall feel on the outside
Note: Vietnam Cafe sits across from KU Medical Center and can get busy
If you want “real” pizza (did I just start a fight?), 1889 Pizza Napoletena serves it: authentically Neapolitan wood-fired pizza
Dine in and take it slow or call in and rush it out
this place accommodates but does not bend on flavor
Closed to movie screenings for the season as of this writing but slated to reopen in April 2025, Boulevard Drive-In Theatre is worth building a Rosedale visit around
Our metro had two drive-ins until recently, but the other closed due to rent hikes
there are fewer than 300 drive-ins left across the country
Perhaps the Boulevard’s secret to success is that it turns into a swap shop on the weekends where vendors sell everything from vegetables to antiques

Iowa — Tree removal continues Wednesday and Thursday at the Sac and Fox Trail crossing at Rosedale Road
as Linn County Road Maintenance crews work to clear the area for a future bridge removal project
Rosedale Road will remain closed to traffic from 7:30 a.m
the Sac and Fox Trail will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists
the parking lot for the trail will be inaccessible while Rosedale Road is closed
The Linn Area Mountain Biking Association (LAMBA) has temporarily relocated the mountain bike trail entrance for the duration of the bridge removal process
Both trail users and drivers are advised to plan for alternate routes during the closures and to exercise caution near the work zone
The City of Cedar Rapids thanks the public for their continued patience and cooperation during this essential maintenance
This art installation bridges historical struggles with current movements for justice
creating a significant public space for reflection and conversation
The East Rosedale Monument Project will host an open-to-the-public dedication on Feb
offering a fresh perspective on the civil rights movement through the lens of Fort Worth's own history
Arts Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Public Art program invite the community to witness this powerful dedication
It's not just an art installation — it's a chance to experience how history
The artist behind this incredible tribute is Christopher Blay
a man whose work has been deeply influenced by his personal journey from Liberia to Fort Worth and his role as the chief curator of the Houston Museum of African American Culture
he submitted his proposal to the Fort Worth Public Art Commission
To create a monument that would not only reflect national civil rights history but also speak to the local significance of transit buses during this pivotal time
right by one of the neighborhood’s bus stops
As he thought about the neighborhood’s history
he realized the transit bus was not just a mode of transportation — it was a symbol of struggle
“The transit bus was this very pedestrian kind of conduit for a lot of the moments of the Civil Rights Movement,” Blay told KERA last June
From the Montgomery bus boycott to the Freedom Riders to the busing of students for desegregation
carrying people through America’s fight for equality
The result is nothing short of awe-inspiring
Blay has taken a 1970s-era transit bus and transformed it into a living monument
its gray exterior adorned with bold orange
These colors aren't just decorative — they connect this piece of public art to the actual history of the bus
bringing a tactile authenticity to the installation
silhouettes of children from the neighborhood
Inside the bus, the past comes to life. Engraved plaques detail historic moments from the Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery bus boycott, the busing of Black students to I.M. Terrell High School in Mansfield, and Fort Worth’s own Civil Rights demonstrations. The stories of local heroes like Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," and Brenda Polk
who carried the banner for Fort Worth's first Martin Luther King Jr
The road to creating this monument wasn’t easy
challenges emerged — from sourcing materials to finding the right fabricators

The East Rosedale Monument Project serves as a bridge between the past and the present
It stands as a marker for where we’ve been
The monument intersects with more recent struggles
like the tragic 2019 killing of Atatiana Jefferson by Fort Worth police
reminding us that the fight for justice and equality is ongoing
Blay has always viewed this project as part of a larger American journey
“It’s an evolving experiment—this great American democracy experiment,” Blay reflects

and this monument is a testament to that.”
Blay enlisted 2023 Tarrant County Youth Poet Laureate April Pelton to write a poem for the monument

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) today announced the start of a $51.8 million infrastructure project in Rosedale
Queens that will help manage stormwater in the area
and make other transportation improvements in the area
DDC is managing the project for DEP and DOT
“New York City is putting more money into improving the sewer and water infrastructure of Southeast Queens than any other neighborhood in the city,” said DEP Commissioner Rohit T
“As climate change brings more extreme rainfall
this $51 million investment will ensure better stormwater drainage
in Rosedale and improve the lives of property and business owners in this area for decades to come
I’d like to thank DDC and DOT for their partnership on this major project.”
“Not only will this infrastructure project prevent flooding and bring new roadways
but it will deliver critical safety enhancements to an underserved area in Southeast Queens,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez
as well as the addition or upgrade of street lighting
and pavement markings will benefit many pedestrians and bus riders in the Rosedale community.”
“The people of Rosedale desperately need these major improvements
which will prevent future flooding and ponding occurrences in the area,” said NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley
“They have waited and dealt with flooding for far too long
This project will upgrade the drainage system and water distribution system and add catch basins to direct storm water
roads and sidewalks will also be fixed to better serve pedestrians and riders.”
The project will expand the storm sewer system
addressing years of severe flooding episodes in the Rosedale area
Nearly 1.5 miles of local storm sewers will be upgraded or newly installed
The construction of 92 catch basins will help to drain precipitation from the roadways while 13 underground storm chambers will further boost capacity
More than half a mile of sanitary sewers will also be upgraded or newly installed
almost two miles of water mains will be upgraded from six- to eight-inch cast iron pipes to stronger eight- to 12-inch ductile iron pipes
These newer pipes are more resilient and less prone to breakage than the cast iron pipes typically used decades ago
14 new hydrants will be added and 21 will be upgraded to ensure firefighters have ready access to the City’s water supply during emergencies
The project will reconstruct 36 blocks with new roadways
will replace over 4.5 miles of damaged/broken curbs and over 4.5 acres of sidewalks
and will construct 130 ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
The project will improve traffic safety and traffic flow in the area
on major roadways such as Francis Lewis Boulevard
Hook Creek Boulevard and Hungry Harbor Road
Over 140 new street trees will also be planted in the area
The project is part of a $2.64 billion investment made by the City to build a comprehensive drainage system
and alleviate flooding in neighborhoods throughout southeast Queens
The project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2026
“Southeast Queens has been incredibly flood prone for generations
all while the city has historically disinvested in these communities—but no more
We are finally reversing that trend and making sure communities like Rosedale have the upgraded infrastructure it needs to prevent disruptive and damaging floods,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr
“As climate change continues to creep in
investments like these have never been more important
That’s why I’m proud to have secured $2 billion in infrastructure upgrades for Southeast Queens while in the City Council and I look forward to completing even more of these critical projects in the coming years.”
“Flood protection is essential to the health and safety of the Rosedale community,” said New York City Council Majority Whip Selvena N
“This investment will help modernize our infrastructure and ensure Rosedale is prepared to withstand the city’s severe weather events for years to come.”
“As someone who deeply cares about our community
I understand the frustration that frequent flooding has caused for many of our residents,” said New York State Senator James Sanders Jr
“The installation of new water mains will be a game-changer in preventing these issues
and curbs will make a tangible difference in the daily lives of pedestrians and drivers alike
I am proud to support these much-needed upgrades and am excited to witness the positive impact they will have on Rosedale.”

Rosedale Distilling Company’s site renovations will preserve approximately 130,000 square feet of historic architecture across multiple locations
This includes a 166,000-square-foot former factory dating back to 1954
which will house the main distillery and barrel-aging facilities
The distillery will also revive several downtown Rosedale buildings
tasting rooms and museums dedicated to Mississippi River explorers
All of this carries on the tradition created by Martin years ago
“One product line will honor the legendary Perry Martin," Coleman

Martin buried his filled barrels to age in the sandbar of the Mississippi River to avoid discovery -- barrels he bought from my grandad’s hardware store
customers would ask for it by name in bars in Chicago
We appreciate the cooperation of the Martin family in bringing this historic brand back alive.”
Rosedale's location along the Mississippi River allows convenient access via the Port of Rosedale and the recently upgraded Terrene Landing
with support from the Mississippi Development Authority and Bolivar County
they hope will further highlight the Delta’s rich cultural and natural assets
drawing in both locals and out-of-state visitors

Restaurateur Ashok Bajaj continues to bank on suburban outskirts of D.C
A little over a week ago, restaurateur Ashok Bajaj opened Rosedale
his fifth restaurant on Connecticut Avenue
“They should name this street Knightsbridge Restaurant Group.” While Bajaj insists opening so many spots on the Northwest main street was more of a coincidence
Rosedale’s neighborhood choice was strategic
“Had you asked me pre-pandemic if I would open a restaurant in Van Ness
I probably would have said no,” Bajaj said
The acclaimed restaurateur is known for his downtown mainstays (Bombay Club, Modena, and La Bise (formerly Oval Room)
His shift to more residential neighborhoods for new restaurants is a direct response to hybrid and remote working
Bajaj noted that while all his restaurants still do well
is struggling a bit” and more people are now staying closer to their own neighborhoods when venturing out to eat
Van Ness in particular offers a unique opportunity
As a highly residential area with a scarce number of restaurants
Rosedale is the only spot offering seasonal American cuisine
They will also be the only place to have dine-in brunch
which they plan to launch later this month
With James Beard Foundation Award winner chef Frank Ruta at the helm
the place boasts a variety of shareable plate options
“It’s so cliche to say farm to table,” Ruta said
“But when Ashok and I first started talking we wanted to rely a lot on the farms around us.”
Most of their products are locally sourced
with proteins and produce coming mainly from Pennsylvania
but he wants to be known as one of the “better restaurants in D.C.”
From daily rotating rotisserie options including chicken
to pastas and even pizzas made from a sourdough starter in 1988 when Ruta was working at the White House
they hope they can have something for every family member
Rotating the menu based on what’s in season will hopefully keep regulars interested and wanting to return frequently
where you can feel comfortable every day and for a special occasion as well,” general manager George Manolatos said
you could often find couples stopping to peer into Rosedale’s windows to try and get a glimpse of the space
General manager George Manolatos noted that when people would see him entering or leaving Rosedale during its construction
they would ask for details on its opening date and food to expect
the 100-seat dining room and U-shaped bar has been consistently buzzing with guests
the daily rotisserie option was the most popular dish during the first week
“It’s been nice to have the neighborhood really wanting us,” Manolatos said about the response
By spring Rosedale plans to open up their patio facing Connecticut Avenue NW
they hope they can lock in on the community enthusiasm with impressive food and service

The future home of the main Perry Martin Distillery in Rosedale
The Mississippi Development Authority announced Thursday that Rosedale Distilling Company is locating distilling and bottling operations
The company broke ground on the $23.15 million project Thursday
saying they are creating 57 jobs over the next five years
founder of Rosedale Distilling Company said the company is excited to bring this transformative project to the Delta
“It has taken a strong collaboration with our federal
and we are going to work hard to ensure that he and all Mississippians are proud of our company,” Coleman said
“Rosedale will be the first impression that thousands of Mississippi River cruise boat passengers will get when they come to tour the Delta
We are committed to a Rosedale renaissance
and putting historic buildings back into use for our distilling operations is the first step.”
The Port of Rosedale is a large grain and industrial port
The port along with Terrene Landing provide public access to the Mississippi River
which is expected to bring 40,000 visitors per year from cruise vessels by 2025
MDA said Rosedale Distilling is renovating approximately 130,000 square feet of historic buildings
It will be the largest distillery in the history of Mississippi
The primary distillery operations are to be located in 111,400 square feet of the former Alabama Metals Product Company factory building
Governor Tate Reeves called the project a big win for Bolivar County
local company highlighting one of our many historic riverside communities and demonstrating the hospitality that is such an important part of our state’s culture,” Reeves said in a statement
“This investment and the many jobs that come with it is both an economic development victory and further testament to the fact that Mississippi is a great place to live
MDA noted that the agency is providing assistance for road improvements and water/sewer infrastructure improvements while the city of Rosedale and Bolivar County are also assisting with the project

A guide to the newest places to eat and drink
Frank Ruta has kept the same sourdough starter alive since he was a chef in Ronald Reagan’s White House in 1988
He used it to bake loaves at his long-gone yet beloved Cleveland Park restaurant Palena and into more recent years as chef of Annabelle in Dupont Circle
He’ll continue to incorporate the sourdough starter into thin-crust pizzas and bread at Rosedale
a farmhouse-styled American restaurant near the Van Ness Metro serving seasonal small plates and rotating rotisserie specials
Bajaj says many of the clientele who come to his restaurants live in Upper Northwest DC
he wanted to create neighborhood place for them that was a little more affordable and relaxed but still had upscale atmosphere
“I don’t want to sound too pompous here
but this probably will be the place in town where you want a pizza and a glass of wine
You’re actually sitting on a $600 chair,” Bajaj says
simple cooking” at Rosedale: “It’s kind of cliche to say that we’re going to lean a lot on what the farmers are giving us and picking for us
because it seems like everybody’s doing that nowadays… but that’ll be the focus
Ruta’s naturally leavened pizzas land somewhere between New York and New Haven styles with toppings like bacon
The rotisserie grill will be another highlight: spinning chickens one day
including potato-and-smoked-cheddar croquettes
or chicken livers with pickled honeycrisp apples and scallions
You’ll also find a handful of salads
such as butternut ravioli or amatriciana with house-cured guanciale
Bigger mains include a 45-day dry-aged steak or sole l’anglaise
expect classic cocktails—from a barrel-aged fig Manhattan to a Last Word—and a focus on organic
with glasses ranging from $12 to $19 and bottles starting at $48
Rosedale is named after a historic farmhouse in Cleveland Park that was built in the late 1700s by a colonel who fought in the Revolutionary War
The restaurant embraces a modern farmhouse look with natural woods
it feels that you’re transported to a farmhouse somewhere in the country in France or Italy,” Bajaj says
“But of course there’s Connecticut Avenue in front of us
so we have we put nice curtains in the windows.”

SeaQuest has appeared to close its Rosedale Center location as the company continues to work through Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and faces an investigation for how it treats its animals
makes Roseville the fifth SeaQuest location across the country to shut down in the past two years as the Idaho-based company faced financial pressures and calls from animal advocacy groups to cease operations
Tuesday’s development was welcomed by Aaron Zellhoefer
Minnesota state director of Humane World for Animals
formerly known as the Humane Society of the United States
“I’m not surprised this day has come,” Zellhoefer said in a phone interview
“People decided not to give their money to these places.”
Information about SeaQuest Roseville by Tuesday afternoon had been removed from the company’s website and calls to the aquarium weren’t able to go through
Google Maps lists the location as permanently closed
The beleaguered chain of indoor aquariums and petting zoos in shopping malls filed for bankruptcy last year after Humane World for Animals released footage of an undercover investigation at other locations showing hungry animals begging for food
The Roseville location had failed five inspections due to many of those problems

The location was under investigation in Ramsey County after the Minnesota DNR submitted a case
That case was turned over to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office
Court filings from December showed SeaQuest owed Rosedale Center more than $500,000 in rent
seeking comment were not immediately returned
SeaQuest had filed subsequent motions to sell its assets
to Jeff Cox and Z&A Management LLC for $80,000
which already owns a 4% interest in SeaQuest
That sale was canceled, leaving the question about what happens to the animals in Roseville and at SeaQuest’s four remaining locations uncertain.
“If the sale does not occur before the middle to end of February, the welfare of the animals and business operations will be in jeopardy,” a previous filing from SeaQuest said.
SeaQuest had assets of less than $1 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million, court documents filed in December showed.
PETA had opposed the sale to Cox, saying selling to an insider would only lead to more animal sickness and more violations of federal, state and local laws.
“Champagne corks are popping at PETA now that this blight on Roseville has finally stopped exploiting and endangering animals,” PETA Foundation General Counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet said in a statement.
A call was left Tuesday at SeaQuest’s corporate headquarters seeking comment.
Going forward, “the surviving animals at SeaQuest Roseville must be transferred to accredited facilities where they can finally get the care they need and deserve,“ Zellhoefer said. “Management at Rosedale Center must ensure that no other animal-abusing business takes its place.”
