At a clinic led by two-time Olympian and Rosemount alum Payton Otterdahl
the Irish showed off the unique strength of their discus and shot put programs
On a blustery morning last month outside Rosemount High School
freshman Emma Flugum had two very important questions for Olympic shot putter Payton Otterdahl
The first: What did he think of the chocolate muffins that went viral at the Paris Olympics
Flugum‘s second question: “If you could thank one coach for pushing you to be the thrower you are today
Otterdahl didn’t hesitate to share his answer with the 30 throwers gathered around him
wouldn’t be in the place that I’m at right now.”
Tim Conboy has coached in Rosemount’s discus and shot put programs since 1987
He’s overseen an Irish team that has produced not just Olympian Otterdahl
but a steady stream of state medalists and record holders
provided a glimpse into how Rosemount’s throwing program has become one of Minnesota’s strongest
This summer’s outdoor season will take him as far as Croatia and Morocco to compete
The trip home gave him the chance to see his idea for a clinic come to life — first suggested during the school football team’s “Payton Otterdahl Night” held last fall to celebrate his second Olympics
At the Summer Olympics in Paris last summer
it’s not a very popular sport,” Otterdahl said
“Being able to have motivated younger generations that still love throwing and want to get better
that’s what it’s all about,” Otterdahl said
“To let them know they come from a great line and culture of throwers at this school
is the “godfather of the throws program,” said Rosemount boys coach Jay Hatleli
there were fewer than a dozen students — boys and girls combined — participating
thriving program must have a “happy marriage” between football and track
Rosemount’s throwing program has built a working relationship with Rosemount’s other sports teams
If there’s a hockey or soccer player wandering Rosemount’s halls
coaches know where to send them come springtime
Rosemount also fields an Olympic weightlifting club in the winter
Combine that with large youth and middle school track programs
and the Irish have had a steady stream of athletes trying shot put and discus
They make the daily trek up to “the Hill” — the elevated area overlooking Rosemount’s stadium
where the throwers train and kids are celebrated for their size and strength
“the Hill” is not very nice in the grand scheme of every other school
Otterdahl said the mats near the rings might date back to before he graduated and went on to win NCAA titles in shot put and weight throw at North Dakota State
Of the 300 kids who typically come out for track and field
half of our roster is throwers,” Hatleli said
The depth of its throws program has helped the Rosemount team rack up recent state accolades
Conboy was briefly the boys team’s head coach in the ’90s until ..
a former North Dakota State track and field athlete
began coaching the girls program four years later
The Rosemount boys won big-school state titles in 2008
The Irish have also cleaned up well at the true-team state meets
with titles in 2019 and 2021 on the girls side
“The throws program is like a sport unto its own,” Jay Hatleli said
“That frees me up to do a lot of lot of other things that maybe some other head coaches don’t have the luxury of doing.”
junior Adam Hanson‘s shot put best of 57 feet
behind only Forest Lake junior Howie Johnson’s 58-2
also won a state weightlifting title this winter
Flugum’s shot put best of 37-7 is third in Minnesota’s freshman class
behind Lakeville North‘s Sahara Wilson and Luverne’s Taya Johnson
Flugum joined the team as a seventh-grader
just as future Army thrower Jordan Hecht was capping off her Rosemount career with a third discus state title and shot put gold
the Irish had at least one thrower earn a top-three finish at state each year
capped off the streak by breaking the Minnesota’s boys shot put record by throwing 66-8.75
Max and Trevor Otterdahl, Payton’s younger brothers, were also standouts at Rosemount before competing at NDSU. Now throwing at Nebraska, Max’s 2019 state titles (64-4 in shot put, 191-4 in discus) topped out the brothers’ “friendly rivalry.”
When Payton Otterdahl was a freshman, he said he was “screwing around at practice” and wanted to quit the team. Conboy sat him down with senior Brandt Berghuis, who finished eighth at state that year before going on to throw at North Dakota State.
“You can be really good at this,” the pair told Otterdahl. “You need to give this a real try.”
“The compounding thing, having greats that are seniors ... that’s what you aspire to be,” said Otterdahl, who is now gunning for a medal at the world championships in Tokyo in September. “It’s snowballed into what this program has become.”

7 seed Rosemount pulled a mild upset over No
2 seed Centennial/Spring Lake Park with a 3-2 win in the first state quarterfinal game of the Class AA Tournament
and Gianna Marchese was outstanding in goal as the Irish advanced to Friday’s state semifinals where they will play the winner of Andover and Hill-Murray
Hockey Finalist Sophie Stramel opened the scoring when she banged home a rebound off her own shot for her 29th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead
Holzer got her first on a power play at the 9:20 mark of the third period for a 2-0 lead with just over six minutes to play
But Centennial/SLP’s Grace Laager scored on a power play just over a minute later on a nice individual effort
finally solving Marchese who had been lights out all game by stifling several close chances by the Cougars
But Holzer answered again for the Irish when she skated down the left wing of the Cougar zone and fired a shot that deflected off a stick and found the back of the net for a 3-1 lead
The Cougars mounted more pressure by pulling their goalie
and Laager added a goal with 38 seconds left on a one-timer
but time ran short as Rosemount held off a late surge by the Cougars to win 3-2 and advance in the tourney
Rosemount’s Marchese stopped 22 shots to earn the win

The land parcels are located northwest of the intersection of Blaine Avenue East and 145th Street
while the other was sold for $43.32 million
Meta told DCD that there is no existing plan to develop the land
Rosemount senior planner Anthony Nemcek said the city has not received a planned unit development application for this site from anyone

The first scenario was a 2.3 million sq ft (213,677 sqm) data center and the second scenario was for industrial development
The site is currently zoned as an employment district and was sold by RGA Holdings LLC and RADS Land Company LLC
Meta already has a planned data center in the Rosemount Area; a 715,000 sq ft (66,426 sqm) data center that will see an investment of $800 million
The state of Minnesota proposed expanded tax breaks for data centers in April last year

A segment of Hwy. 52 in Rosemount is back open Thursday morning after both directions were shut down Wednesday due to a propane leak.
All southbound lanes are fully open while northbound is reduced to one lane between Clayton Avenue and E. 145th Street, the State Patrol said.
The Rosemount Fire and Police departments responded at around 2:41 p.m. Wednesday to the 15100 block of Hwy. 52 after reports of a possible brush fire, according to a city release. But when they arrived, emergency responders discovered a substance leak rather than a fire.
After closing part of the highway between County Rds. 46 and 42, crews identified the source of the leak as a propane line owned by Flint Hills Resources refinery.
As a precaution, two families that live near the leak site were evacuated from their homes.
As of about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said the leak was contained and Dakota County personnel were monitoring the air quality.
Gov. Tim Walz posted on X Wednesday night that he had been briefed on the gas leak.
“I’m glad to hear that everyone is safe,” Walz said. “Thank you to the first responders and state agencies who responded to evacuate homes in the area and are investigating to find the exact location of the leak.”
According to Rosemount officials, Flint Hills has been proactive in mitigating the situation. The refinery was working to discharge the remaining propane from the leaking line, and also was assisting with relocation of the evacuated families.
“The safety and well-being of our residents remains our foremost concern and top priority,” said Rosemount Fire Chief Kip Springer. “We are grateful for the cooperation and effective collaboration with Flint Hills Resources, whose expertise played a crucial role in resolving this situation promptly.”
According to the state Department of Transportation, Hwy. 52 between Clayton Avenue in Coates and 145th Street E. in Rosemount was closed Wednesday night in both directions to all traffic except emergency vehicles. A notice said the highway could reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday.
