Westchester's costs rise after private operator's departure County Executive Ken Jenkins last week said that Playland Park would open for 2025 but has yet to say when the amusement park will open or how much of the park Playland patrons will be able to enjoy “It’s very possible that Standard did leave it in a very dire situation,” she said Standard has insisted that it left the amusement park equipment in good condition upon its departure "This mess is what you get when you fail to put contingencies in place," she said "Competent leadership would have done exactly that we're watching a trainwreck in slow motion and the taxpayers are getting hosed for a no bid contract Ken Jenkins has been running the county for the past 8 years The responsibility for this debacle is his alone." While it sounds like a simple category describing the grain used to make the whisky, events this year have demonstrated the absurdities that can be brought about by legislation and agreements. Currently, rye makers in the EU have been banned from using the term ‘rye whisky’ This bizarre problem stems from a 2003 EU‐Canada trade agreement the EU concurred that all ‘rye whisky’ in the EU was to be Canadian there was only one known rye producer in Europe With the powerful wine lobby demanding strong protection for the likes of Champagne and Prosecco rye whisky was likely seen as an easy win to give the Canadians the rules relating to rye whisky have been subsequently overlooked for the past two decades in which time distillers across Europe have begun producing rye whisky it has become a central part of their whisky identity they are being asked to remove the name of the very grain that makes their spirits small amounts were added to whisky made from other grains to offer a more interesting this developed to the situation we have today ‘Canadian rye’ and ‘rye whisky’ are all allowed to be used interchangeably in the country In terms of protecting heritage and historic production methods it also means that Canadian whisky with no rye could theoretically be marketed as ‘rye whisky’ on the label the 2003 agreement aligned the EU with Canada’s domestic definitions While the flavour‐profile approach made some sense in its own context the potential for transparency issues internationally is clear to see Nordic rye is a niche but powerful category that has developed in the past decade. While local authorities overlooked their obligations stemming from the EU‐Canada agreement, rye‐focused distilleries such as Finland’s Kyrö and Denmark’s Stauning became much‐lauded This makes sense – rye is central to food culture in the Nordics It even makes up parts of the national dishes of Finland and Denmark is writing a book titled The Meaning of Rye about the region’s relationship with the grain “Rye has strong geographic ties with the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as Russia,” she explains “Eighty percent of global rye production comes from those areas it’s probably due to rye thriving in these areas with harsher winters.” rye acreage has been dropping in the region in recent decades Nordic rye whisky makers came at just the right time to take a local threatened heritage crop in new directions Like their culinary cousins in New Nordic cuisine Nordic whisky makers have also focused on championing local produce and traceability This has been central to their early success and trust‐building establishing a dedicated set of fans globally it also means the lack of transparency brought about by the current rye restrictions is particularly concerning Jakob Stjernholm is a co‐founder of Thy Distillery Thy routinely lists all the grains in its whisky on the labels aiming to be as open as possible with consumers “We need to tell people what our grains are – they come from our fields.” For a distillery so deeply rooted in farming in a country where rye lies at the heart of culture banning the name of a grain is as devastating as it is ridiculous Stork Club Rye Whiskey in Germany has also been deeply affected by the new rules a state that produces a third of Germany’s rye crop “We decided to use this association with rye to make whisky,” co‐founder Bastien Heuser says We wanted to talk to a modern whisky consumer and bring something new to the market – not copying anyone.” the distillery is re‐labelling its bottles to fit within the rules One way to do that is by translating ‘rye whisky’ into another language – ‘roggen whiskey’ with redesigns required every time they ship to other EU countries not to mention signalling a local rather than international approach that doesn’t fit the overall vision or identity of the company Among the arguments about international agreements the EU’s subsequent guidance and niche workarounds it can be easy to get sucked into the technical arguments here dedicated whisky producers are under threat from these rules European rye makers are suffering a barrage from numerous angles “They’re playing with people’s lives,” Kyrö co‐founder Mikko Koskinen tells me while we discuss the problems his 100% rye whisky distillery faces it’s evidently an upsetting turn of events for a group that The big issue now is where to go from here What future does rye whisky have in Europe The distilleries are hoping an EU‐Canadian committee can meet to rehash the 2003 agreement A solution needs to be found to move forwards in a way that acknowledges Canada’s unique rye heritage while also allowing competition and innovation from European producers – because they are not giving up on their rye whisky We are using cookies to give you the best experience on our website You can find out more about which cookies we are using or switch them off in settings This website uses cookies so that we can provide you with the best user experience possible Cookie information is stored in your browser and performs functions such as recognising you when you return to our website and helping our team to understand which sections of the website you find most interesting and useful Strictly Necessary Cookie should be enabled at all times so that we can save your preferences for cookie settings we will not be able to save your preferences This means that every time you visit this website you will need to enable or disable cookies again (WCYB) — Friday marks 96 years since a devastating tornado struck Rye Cove and killed more than a dozen people News 5's Yannia Nordelo spoke with a local artist whose main goal is to honor the victims The column was updated to reflect new information Kathryn and Walter Burke looked forward with great excitement to Playland’s 2025 season They'd bought season passes from Standard Amusements with plans to spend weekends at the park with their daughters and four grandchildren The Burkes love Playland. Kathryn wrote a history of Playland in 2008 and the Burkes took their children to Playland often in the 1980s with Walter thrilled to see his kids ride the rides he once rode in the 1960s and those thrilling descents on the Dragon Coaster and Log Flume who are expecting a refund on their passes from Standard Amusements have rethought their plans for Mother’s Day weekend Westchester had yet to say when the county-owned amusement park will open following the abrupt departure of the private management firm in February just three years into its 30-year privatization deal and that’s where we were going to be,” said Kathryn Burke “I don’t think that’s happening this year.” Just days after Westchester's parks department held a job fair to hire for Playland summer work County Executive Ken Jenkins declared that the park will open in his April 23 State of the County address did not set a date for the park’s opening nor did he say how much of the amusement park would be open to Playland patrons Related: 'Everybody's going down to Playland Park': As uncertainty looms, Playland remains iconic Westchester County faces big Playland costsThe Burkes’ disappointment comes as Westchester County digs itself out the ruins of the failed privatization agreement The deal was conceived during the administration of then-County Executive Rob Astorino in 2016 and was carried out under a revised pact after former County Executive George Latimer failed in his bid to scuttle the agreement in 2018 Westchester taxpayers are left holding the bag for as much as $186 million in Playland debt incurred during the privatization deal and its aftermath There's $150 million borrowed for Playland upgrades and at least $36 million to be borrowed to pay Standard Amusements in the deal's dissolution The county will be paying it off for up to 20 years The status of property taxation at the park remains in play including the tax status of the Tiki Beach restaurant and a $2.2 million refund the city of Rye says it's owed by the Rye City Schools Playland has emerged as an issue in the race for Westchester County Executive this year who served as deputy county executive during Standard Amusements' tenure as park manager "As someone who grew up across the street from Playland and worked there to help pay for my schooling it is heartbreaking to see what Ken Jenkins has done to our beloved park," said Sculti Westchester taxpayers may be on the hook for $36 million owed to Standard Amusements A combination of a potential $36 million budget hit to Standard plus the lost Playland revenue would be catastrophic to the county's finances." The Jenkins administration placed the blame on Sculti and Westchester Republicans who conceived the deal in 2016 “We all agree — the state Standard Amusements left Playland in is absolutely heartbreaking and it’s the direct result of the sweetheart deal Christine Sculti struck with Standard Amusements when she and then-County Executive Rob Astorino were desperately trying to unload public treasures at the expense of our County’s most cherished residents — our children," said county Director of Communications Catherine Cioffi one-sided deal that sold out taxpayers and left the County holding the bag — having to return 100% of Standard Amusements’ investment That’s why County Executive Ken Jenkins voted against this agreement in 2016 when he was on the Board of Legislators." More taxpayer investments may be necessary Cioffi confirmed that Playland’s repair crew is working on damage to rides over the winter after Standard Amusement failed to adequately winterize their mechanical systems An earlier county ride safety audit found that Standard had insufficient staff to perform standard maintenance county report to Standard detailed repairs that had yet to be made A Standard Amusements spokeswoman denied that the company cut back on maintenance as it contemplated terminating the 30-year agreement Standard Amusements prioritized both the improvement and maintenance of rides to the highest standard including the winterization of rides after the end of the 2024 season consistent with both previous years and industry standards," according to a statement "This is yet another baseless claim from the County to try to distract from its own failures to prioritize Playland.” appears on target to have a full opening for Playland Beach on Long Island Sound Playland regulars and seasonal employees are hoping it opens by Memorial Day weekend Among the prospective seasonal employees for the aquatics venues was Malakai Hulcome who lined up with 40 other jobseekers outside the Westchester County Center on April 19 at the county’s Playland Job Fair “I’m hoping to find out today,” said Hulcome a Mount Vernon High School junior who wanted to work as a cashier at a Playland food concession Also seeking work was pensioner Bob Maliszewski has collected parking fees at the Playland entrance with fellow retiree a former shop steward with Teamsters Local 456 said he was looking forward to another summer greeting motorists at the gate “I’m reliable and show up on time,” said Maliszewski The privatization deal spawned a spate of lawsuits over the taxable status of the county-owned park once Standard Amusement took over management in 2022 A ruling by the Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Brooklyn in April rejected the city of Rye’s contention that the amusement park should pay city school and county taxes on land it valued at more than $200 million The city of Rye will not appeal the ruling The court agreed with Westchester that the management agreement did not transfer ownership of the park to the private company Yet to be decided as of late April was the fate of $2.2 million that the city of Rye paid the Rye City school district in the middle of the Playland legal battle Standard Amusements and Westchester County did not pay their tax bill to the Rye school district during the pendency of the litigation over the tax exemption Now the city of Rye is now seeking a refund from the schools because the property was found to be tax-exempt said it's akin to a private business that pays its property taxes even as it challenges the taxable status of its property “We are in the shoes of a taxpayer who has overpaid by 100%,” she said “The school district doesn't get to keep the improper tax money has yet to decide whether it will return the $2.2 million that the city of Rye paid to cover the shortfall That payment was based on what turned out to be the city’s improper taxation of the Playland amusement park Rye City Superintendent of Schools Eric Byrne said the board has yet to meet with its legal counsel to determine next steps Westchester taxpayers out $36 million — and maybe moreWhile the property tax issue appears near settlement the cost of running the nation’s only publicly-owned amusement park continues to rise Dissolution of the management contract with Standard came with a payment of $36 million to cover Standard's investment during its short tenure An additional $21 million could be possible depending on what an arbitration panel of three retired judges decides in August said Westchester County Attorney John Nonna If Westchester is found liable for defaulting on the contract Standard Amusements and its investors will receive at total of $57 million Westchester had argued that Standard can be terminated from the contract — without the additional $21 million payment – because the company announced in January it was done with running Playland “We are claiming that Standard was in default,” said Nonna Jenkins has urged the Board of Legislators to approve borrowing up to $36 million by May 20 to pay Standard Amusements and avoid interest penalties of 18% “This will prevent interest from accruing on the $36 million which would save the county a substantial sum of money in the long run,” said Jenkins and less than a month before the interest kicks in the Board of Legislators will meet May 5 to decide whether to move forward on the $36 million payment to avoid interest The three committees will discuss the issue on the morning of May 5 with a vote expected before the full board that evening Another tax issue remains at the park: the city of Rye’s assessment that places a taxable value of $1.3 million on the Tiki Beach restaurant which Standard Amusements managed during its three-year stint which is located on Westchester County property Both Standard and Westchester County sued to restore the tax-exemption Kristin Wilson said the tax exemption for the restaurant was revoked in 2011 with three Rye City assessors keeping it on the taxable assessment roll There was a settlement of a tax grievance in 2021 with the city signing off on the reduced assessment She said the county has again filed to moved the restaurant from the tax rolls But Wilson said the restaurant is a private business that operates outside of the amusement park and would not be subject to the recent appeals court decision “The restaurant isn’t dependent on the amusement park,” said Wilson “The restaurant will be operated this summer and the amusement park may or may not open.” The restaurant case remains pending before state Supreme Court Justice Ann Minihan who was the author of the decision that found Playland remained tax-exempt while under basement in the hopes of retooling songs he originally wrote in the 1990s to perform with a new band I wrote all these songs back in the day around ’98 ’99 and played them out a couple times using my friend Scott (Black Hollies) on drums and Justin (Rye Coalition) on bass Then I stopped writing the album joining Rye Coalition to record the “On Top” LP sessions when everybody was holed up and and nobody wanted to do shit with the sky falling I recorded this slowly in my friend’s basement to tape I basically waited 25 years to record them properly with hopes to put together a band and play them out As soon as I was done recording and mixing I need that I needed to record them now or I might not be able to Distillery: Sourced from Ross & Squibb Distillery (MGP) Official Website Press Release Bulleit introduced 95 Rye Frontier Whiskey as a permanent line extension in 2011 Bulleit has a unique agreement with the company for them to produce rye whiskey using a proprietary recipe which is done at MGP and Bulleit’s warehouses or “Bulleit Rye 10 Year” as it is typically referred to is now a permanent extension of Bulleit’s rye brand The oft-used “95” refers to the 95% rye in its mashbill A mix of seasoned and toasted oak wraps up the aroma with a satisfying conclusion but this is a case where it doesn’t need to be as it maximizes the scents it has to satisfying results Typical bold rye notes take a backseat to an upfront surge of pear This unexpected yet delightful surprise immediately sets a welcoming tone inviting the drinker in with its approachableness With additional touches of leather and mild oak but it is quickly drowned out by the encroaching flavors of the finish seasoned oak unravels against bitter apple This is all layered against vanilla and finishes with stewed apples with the rush of rye spice merely enhancing the baking-related spices that are already present it is a satisfying end that nicely contrasts the rest of the sip Bulleit 95 Rye 10 Year Old was introduced to take its place as an ongoing product.Being an MGP-sourced whiskey plenty of rye drinkers probably know what to expect as MGP-produced ryes are everywhere in the marketplace But Bulleit has always had a unique relationship with Diageo and like what we saw with the Bulleit Rye 12 Year Old they have a knack for releasing good stock. The 2 year difference between the 10 and 12 Year releases is quite surprising and a strong case could be made that they are from entirely different companies as age notes are prevalent throughout its sip thanks to the fruity notes found in its nose and palate Even its finish doesn't showcase its age and instead focuses on a deepening of flavor and overall balance Bulleit 95 Rye 10 Year Old doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it is one of the better showcases of aged rye from MGP currently available Given the quality of the sip Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old delivers and its price point it is an excellent value in today’s market Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old is an approachable highly drinkable rye that impresses with its age statement and price Some may balk at Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old as just being another MGP-sourced rye it doesn't offer the degree of unique qualities other ryes offer but its overall quality and enjoyable flavors are hard to beat and many rye-haters may even find something to love With its mix of fruit-forward nose and palate Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old is surprisingly dynamic they can offer Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old at a price point no other brand can match in today’s market When Bulleit Rye 12 Year Old eventually dries up and disappears from the store shelves Bulleit Rye 10 Year Old shouldn’t be seen as a consolation prize but one rye drinkers should celebrate and grab hold of The Rye Boys Golf Team picked up win introduced in 2012 and the brand line now includes a single barrel, 7 year, a blend of bourbon and rye The new Knob Creek 10 Year Old Rye became a permanent addition to the Knob Creek portfolio in mid-2024 You’re introduced to a noticeably mild aroma for a 100 proof rye It begins with a mix of grain and hay that quickly transfers to sweet candy corn The combination provides a refreshing middle ground before ending on rich caramel and orange on the backend It’s a surprisingly dynamic aroma with a distinct beginning Though a swirl of the glass helps liven up the scents Immediate caramel and barrel char notes hit your tongue before entering into anise territory The anise provides more of a gentle flavoring agent than a dominating one Combined with light eucalyptus and mint notes it helps give the sip a refreshing quality but they struggle to blossom against the lingering oak notes The palate leans sweet but never fully commits leaving it more simple-tasting than desired Its semi-oily mouthfeel combined with its flavors works well together Dry oak is then injected against a coffee lover's mix of mocha Touches of clove and anise can be tasted but are overpowered by the rise of tobacco All of the flavors have good staying power that help elevate the sip from average territory The lack of overt sweetness or fruitiness is most noticeable on the finish but isn’t as dynamic as other parts of the sip But a commonality among these and Jim Beam’s offerings they rarely impress and truly stand out. These ryes come across as mass-market ryes meaning they are meant to appeal to a wide range of drinkers Knob Creek 10 Year Rye encompasses these qualities it doesn’t taste noticeably “aged.” There is a surprising amount of youthful vigor still in this release and an overall brightness that is not often found in other ryes of a similar age One of its most unique traits is its flavor range of anise which can be noticed throughout its sip in different degrees of intensity Knob Creek 10 Year Rye is a whiskey that has moments of uniqueness but they quickly end and you’re instantly brought back to familiar territory the bump to $200 for Michter’s 10 Year Rye is hard to top In the now crowded field of 10 year old ryes Knob Creek 10 Year Rye has a hard time truly standing out based on its price alone Beam Suntory throws support to its rye line by introducing a permanent 10 year old edition but its sip doesn’t quite offer enough to truly stand out Knob Creek 10 Year Rye is being introduced in a time where competition is much stronger than it was a mere 5 years ago With many more options available with similar age statements Knob Creek 10 Year Rye can’t rely on its age alone With many of these 10 year old rye options also priced similarly Knob Creek 10 Year Rye now finds itself in an increasingly crowded spaceFor a rye with a 10 year old age statement many may not even notice but it never truly enters aged oak territory The rye is surprisingly bright and expressive for its age which is one area the whiskey actually truly shines But compared to the many decade old ryes on the market - most that are similarly priced - Knob Creek 10 Year Rye struggles to fully compete This story was originally produced by the Portsmouth Herald. exactly surprised to see the marble rye flying off the shelf As the latest iteration of the annual capstone project for students enrolled in FVCC’s Culinary Institute of Montana Root and Rye has taken students through the process of opening up a food-based business from concept to culinary creation Students in the program begin by envisioning and creating a marketable idea before progressing to developing a business plan and then actually opening up a new eatery in the basement of the college’s arts and technology building In recent years the pop-up has taken students down culinary pathways focusing on themes like barbecue Italian food and Scandinavian open-faced sandwiches As part of their market research this year students analyzed a little over a dozen other businesses in the valley which could be considered competitors The research revealed that marble rye isn’t all that common it’s almost always part of a Reuben sandwich is the amount of thought that actually goes into the concept,” said Root and Rye kitchen manager and FVCC senior Erin Abbott So a lot of it was supporting our community the executive chef for FVCC’s culinary program described the project as amounting to a test of the students’ values vision and mission against the reality of serving paying customers “Our objective is to meet or exceed the expectation of every guest,” Blanton said and experience it so they can feel what that feels like.” Blanton said that he’s sometimes an observer He wants the students to have a long enough leash to actually feel what it’s like to be invested in the venture but at the same time to be able to help coerce them towards their goals and make sure that students are mentally and physically prepared “I think it expedites their learning capacity and gives them a real sense of what the world they’re entering into will be like once they graduate this program Everything from the point of sale to the marketing to the human resources element and then getting that to be able to produce for up to 100 guests on a daily basis.” Blanton said that of the sandwiches on the menu The Forager and something called the Mary’s Shepherd which is made using lamb from Kila-based Hansen Farm that’s marinated before being cooked up and served with a whipped garlic-mint-lime feta a chimichurri made with arugula from the FVCC Farm and pickled red onion on an ancient grain baguette are the byproduct of an artisan breads class that was developed during the pandemic but are only making their debut this semester Culinary arts program director Manda Hudak said that a lot of students come into the program with an interest in making pastries and an interest in the idea of opening up a bakery Students spend a year working on their pastry techniques as part of the culinary institute curriculum The artisan breads course is a deep dive into breadmaking which Hudak said also has the benefit of enhancing pastry skills “It’s looking at types of grains used in different applications but how we grind it and what the bread tastes like what its texture is and how it eats,” she said Although bread is something of a specialty at Root and Rye the menu also features a number of soups and sides including a garden potato leek soup made with leek ash and truffle oil a carrot ginger soup with lemongrass and coconut milk Palouse beluga lentil soup made with more lion’s mane mushrooms from Sun Hand Farms a “Smoked Snow Country Garden Potato Salad” which promises a smokey twist on Yukon gold potatoes Several sandwiches on the menu can also be ordered chopped up into a salad Root and Rye offers a lemonade float with housemade lemonade and a scoop of spruce tip vanilla bean ice cream made from Kalispell Kreamery cream; a huckleberry bread pudding which can also be enjoyed with the spruce tip ice cream; and a hand pie filled with green tomato and white chocolate they’ll pass by posters on the hallway leading to the kitchen and dining area which highlight local producers students have partnered with students had to develop relationships with producers which meant getting them on the phone and figuring out what’s available at what price or what can be made available for what price As accounting and purchasing manager and FVCC senior Miya Rogers said “We try to stay as whole and local as possible for our in-house products.” “Because a lot of healthy food is really hard to approach especially because it just doesn’t taste good So our main goal is to not only make it healthy but to make it look good and taste good.” Root and Rye is open Wednesday What’s true for single malt Scotch won’t always hold for single grain and comparing whiskeys across continents is like comparing apples to kumquats — doable but it’s still probably best to pick smaller battles To that end, we previously asked nine of the smartest folks in American whiskey — including some bona fide legends — about the ideal age for bourbon That survey yielded fascinating ranges and more than a few caveats It’s practically impossible to prompt an industry vet without turning on the fountain of knowledge It’s just one of many examples illustrating that when it comes to whiskey maturation it’s tough to categorize things by clearly defined rules and norms So we asked nine of the smartest American distillers and blenders (Fletcher among them) for their thoughts on the best age range for rye whiskey ideally with no greater than a four-year spread We also solicited some additional thoughts on aging rye versus bourbon Note: These responses have been lightly edited for formatting and clarity I often view corn-based mash bills as providing the canvas for barrel flavors to express themselves rye whiskey can behave a bit differently in its maturation some particularly punchy rye distillate seems to need even longer in cask to mellow out and mature into a cohesive whiskey I generally prefer bourbon aged a little longer in a more moderate temperature some of my favorite rye barrels mature in cooler warehouse locations giving a good amount of time for oxidative reactions to occur while limiting the exposure to heat preferably with a lower entry proof to keep the profile sweeter Most rye whiskeys reach peak maturation between 10 and 13 years — this is when they truly shine and excite me the most creating a harmonious profile where sweetness and floral notes shine without overpowering This stage delivers a refined complexity that needs no further adjustment Rye is a more powerful grain and requires more precise aging to balance its power and nuanced flavors leans into comforting notes like caramel and vanilla There are so many things that go into the flavor I’ve worked at several distilleries, and I think each had their sweet spot — at least for my palate. At Jack Daniel’s I think our rye is excellent between 6 and 10 years old But a barrel on the top floor of a really hot house will be more balanced closer to 6 than 10 years When we look to push [the] age out on any of our products we will let the whiskey tell us what to do We will move barrels as needed even though generally we don’t do that we will do it the best way we can and keep as much balance of flavor as possible I think balance is the most important thing; keeping some sweetness of the spirit up front to round out the level of oak and spice that the barrel brings when it’s a new Our personal preference here at Kentucky Peerless tends to fall within a 5-to-8-year span on the aging of our rye whiskey barrels We start sampling our product at the 4-year mark to test if the barrels are aging properly in our warehouses and this also gives us an idea of the distinct tasting notes the whiskey picks up year-to-year and season-to-season We are still new to the world of bourbon and rye whiskey we will be able to develop new aging techniques and see how our distillate further develops in our barrels our aging process is determined by the quality of the rye that comes out of the barrel If the barrel is complex and is selected by the tasting panel the barrel can be selected as young as 4 years This is what we enjoy so much about our process: We never know what a barrel will taste like until the very end of maturation By having a lower barrel entry proof of 107 and processing at barrel strength this allows the distillate to absorb more flavor from the barrel and create a bolder and higher-proof whiskey Keeping our rickhouses at one story (five barrels high 10 barrels back) allows minimal temperature variance throughout the different levels of the rickhouse so each of our barrels gets similar heating and cooling rates leading to a more consistent profile between batches Rye is typically aged for shorter periods of time than bourbon Aging rye whiskey for a shorter duration allows the spicier rye grain flavors to remain more prominent in the final product whereas longer aging periods for bourbon typically mellows out the taste and helps develop sweeter this gives the whiskey a smoother profile with enhanced complexity My personal age preference for rye whiskey is between 6 and 10 years which is slightly younger than my preferred age for bourbon Part of the reason I love rye whiskey is because the flavor influence coming from the grain is more pronounced than in bourbon The spice and aromatics that rye contributes in a bourbon are competing with the sweeter flavor notes coming from the corn and the sweet aromatics coming from the barrel But in a rye whiskey the more complex grain is center stage That flavor can be a bit prickly as it develops over the first couple of years but as it matures it becomes not only extremely useful for making well-balanced cocktails but excellent sipping whiskey with complexity I prefer a rye in the 6-year range for making really good cocktails I love treating myself to a 10-year rye to drink neat if I want those warm oak notes to balance out the rye flavor I find that on the younger end you can capture some of those herbal flavors that rye brings to the table and on the older end you can develop really delicious I particularly love Old Forester Rye Whiskey because we heat-cycle our warehouses which means we utilize steam in the winter time to ensure our barrels continue to experience temperature fluctuation rather than sitting dormant This means our rye whiskey achieves incredible balance and maturity as we are able to extract so much flavor from the barrel to complement and round out the grain flavor I actually think that sometimes a well-made rye matures better than bourbon as it ages — part of the reason you see some distilleries launch a 2-year rye before their bourbon hits the shelves rye whiskey really blossoms starting at the 6-year mark I’ll also caveat that I do love an even higher-aged rye whiskey but that’s not necessarily where I think the category on the whole presents best Age is just one of many factors that will impact flavor rye whiskey has a sweet spot between 6 and 10 years A younger rye tends to be a little more fruit-forward As the whiskey matures the rye spice will start to take over those sweeter fruit flavors That’s not to say that rye whiskey older than 10 years is bad but it will continue to mellow and lose some of the nice bold spice and nuanced fruit balance that you see in the 6-10-year range we always strive for balance and approachability We accomplish this through a combination of age which is why I prefer an older bourbon to an older rye a young bourbon can come across “green” as it lacks the complex mellow flavors that are developed through maturation I don’t often see this same issue with rye whiskey I think rye is better younger than bourbon You’re able to appreciate the citrus and spice notes around year four I’m expecting the presence and influence of eugenol I believe the majority of our rye whiskey barrels reach peak maturation after resting between 6 and 10 years this isn’t true for every barrel as some barrels are going to be very good before 6 years and some barrels are going to continue to get better long after 10 years Older rye whiskeys can sometimes become too tannic or over-oaked; the herbal characteristics of rye tend to fade or become overpowered when rye barrels are allowed to mature too long rye tends to reach peak maturation earlier than bourbon sometimes bitter barrel notes developed later in maturation more herbal profile tends to mature faster and can hit its sweet spot in a shorter time frame there are so many factors to consider here What’s the proof of the spirit going into the barrel what’s the proof coming off the still? All of this makes a big difference to the end product there is some continuity within all those variables the real sweet spot starts hitting at 7 to 9 years old That’s when those sharper dry “rye spices” from the distillate begin to shift toward softer dark fruits and deep winter spices with a sweet and lush end (from the wood sugars taking dominance in the distillate) That age range is when the barrels start to shine through while still holding onto the rye-ness of it all You’ll still get nice green herbs and a sharpness that’s “rye” without the harsher/pepperier/drier vibes of a younger one Support the David Gergen Summer Fellowship Program by giving to the David R. Gergen Leadership Experiential Learning Endowment Fund.  I’m among the lucky ones to have had David Gergen as a teacher When I graduated from Harvard Kennedy School in 2009 I think David would most appreciate my sharing in a tribute to him advice that I learned from him that can be useful to others pursuing lives of service Here are five pieces of advice I gained from the great good fortune of knowing David Gergen perhaps the most pragmatic pieces of advice from David Months after completing my third overseas tour as a Marine in Fallujah I joined the Kennedy School on a fellowship David had established with veterans in mind at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership (CPL) He was one of the few balanced voices of reason on cable news and I had watched television anchors and commentators with keen interest ever since replying to a second-grade survey on what I wanted to be when I grew up with We had met through a mutual friend in North Carolina and I had a more of a personal relationship with him from the outset because we shared ties to the Old North State and where I earned my bachelor's degree and intended to settle after graduation with my amazing [University of North Carolina Chapel Hill] Tar Heel wife I approached him one day and proposed an independent study on speechwriting having written and edited speeches for four sitting U.S While David had not offered an independent study focused on speechwriting before and wanted to help me with my career development his time was stretched well beyond that of a typical overworked professor where he created and grew four new national fellowship programs for graduate students He also spoke to groups around the United States and provided commentary each week as a CNN senior political analyst and suggested that each week I come to his home library and discuss it together the following week I knew instantly that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity What I didn’t realize initially was that each book included David’s own handwritten notes in the margins but they were also a source of intrigue for David who in most cases had not revisited his initial observations some of which were written when he was in the arena advising presidents and making history The history he made started early in his career His first job in the Nixon White House resulted in his penning Nixon's resignation letter “No one else was around,” he joked on his 80th birthday Secretary,” David Gergen wrote for Richard Nixon "I hereby resign the Office of the President of the United States David’s handwritten reflections in the books included many candid moments such as “not true” next to hagiographic excerpts in books about Nixon and Johnson Passages about the importance of service were often underlined including a passage that formed the basis of a future book David would write and which I reference at the end of this tribute There were so many learnings I pulled from this inimitable deep dive on speechwriting with one of our nation's great speechwriters A common thread across nearly all of the books was the utility of lists in speeches to distill and package ideas effectively and to help capture attention in a cluttered world David often affirmed this technique in our sessions together and he recalled how he thought about it when he took over as editor of U.S the magazine became best known for its annual rankings lists the most notable of which continues today to rank universities and colleges Whenever I deploy a list in my writing or public speaking—as I am doing at this moment—I think of David and that remarkable time in his home library with his books You can influence a lot when you have as much respect and skill as a communicator as David Gergen I returned to Boston for a reunion of fellows of Harvard's Center for Public Leadership at the famed New England Aquarium It was a significant occasion to celebrate CPL’s stunning growth of fellowships under David's leadership honk.” Two penguins shuffled behind the podium The two penguins behind the podium appeared on top of each other and there was nothing David Gergen could do about it and multiply!” David concluded the formalities of the evening “honk” became a code whenever a group of us who had been in the room where it happened reconnected with David One spectator wondered aloud if the penguins had been attracted to the timbre of his voice: baritone Although David would often note that it was important to define a primary audience when writing a speech another headline for this piece of advice could be about having a sense of humor he once wrote: “What good leaders understand is that a capacity to laugh at anxieties and absurdities of modern life won't solve your problems but will help you get through them.” A moment from the “Penguin Night” at the New England Aquarium with (L-R): Brad Davis David often reflects on history to make more informed decisions and tell stories that inspire change This was as true in his role advising presidents and advice to mentees.  One of his former research assistants referred to it as his superpower I benefited often from his historical wisdom but none more so than at one of the most pivotal junctures in my career.  I was considering leaving a relatively successful business career in my late 30s to start a nonprofit with Peter Dixon a friend from the Marines who was also a mentee of David Peter and I noticed a surge of post-9/11 veterans preparing to run for office in the 2018 midterm elections Could the next generation of veterans help lead our nation and combat the crippling polarization in Congress by working together across party lines We knew from our personal experiences that military service is a great equalizer It forges bonds between Americans from all walks of life young men and women united in service to something larger than oneself veteran representation in Congress had declined from over 70% to under 20% over our lifetimes as polarization in the first branch of our democracy had skyrocketed we had no political or policymaking experience I viewed David's reaction to the idea as the initial stage gate He was the most respected bipartisan leader I knew He cared about my career and knew many of my own strengths and shortcomings David listened intently as I described a character-based pledge that would form the backbone of the organization we started calling "With Honor." Any veteran we supported would need to pledge to serve with integrity especially the courage to work across party lines We would evaluate character through veterans with whom candidates had served Combat is the ultimate test of character We would launch a political action committee that would help the most talented and competitive of the veterans run for Congress and win where veterans often faced a massive disparity in resources they had spent their early adult years in service to the nation David reacted first with historical context He recalled working with bipartisan veterans on the national stage whose relationships together made a consequential impact Dole and Inouye had first forged a friendship recovering together from grievous wounds in combat in WWII He spoke also about the transformative impact of military service on Presidents Truman “I would not pretend the leaders of the World War II generation were perfect But on the whole that generation raised our sights about what is possible when our civic culture is strong and our leaders work across divides passed major legislation advancing the causes of women and communities of color and invested heavily in science and technology they won the Cold War without firing a shot directly at the Russians David brought up two of the first post-9/11 veterans who had recently been elected to Congress: Rep whom David had mentored as a Harvard College student and I planned to call them as a next step if the meeting with David went well David concluded it with the essential question: had veterans in Congress been more bipartisan than non-veterans David encouraged me to reach out to a political science professor who helped run an analysis using data on voting in Congress and sponsorship of legislation The result became our validation: Members of Congress with military service as a group had been more bipartisan than members of Congress without military service since World War II David had guided me to a narrative tied to our history and backed by data He graciously agreed and months later introduced us to our largest early backer who remembered through our mission his friend David and Anne Gergen at a Center for Public Leadership 2015 Reunion with mentees Marine Corps veterans (L-R) Rye Barcott and David Gergen at the With Honor Gala for the 118th Congress I never actually heard David mention the Golden Rule the moral principle that states you should treat others as you would want to be treated Living the Golden Rule can be challenging when you have a full life with many demands on your time getting time with David could be extremely challenging You had to really work to get on his schedule Most students just gave up after a try or two “He isn't replying to my emails,” many a Harvard student thought if you take the time and stay politely persistent and he is kind to people regardless of their station in life the commentary on cable news became louder and more obnoxious I saw David Gergen on television hundreds of times in the past 20 years when David was in between two accomplished people yelling at each other I asked him how he managed to keep his composure He said he tried to understand where people were coming from "But it can be difficult,” he added with a laugh Many people know David from some level of personal interaction Regardless of the depth of their relationship people always speak to what a good person he is apart from the occasional quips about how to find more time with him the type who genuinely wants the best for you His kindness and concern for others carry over to his children who are living service-oriented lives and also benefited from an amazing mother who is a psychologist and a beautiful writer in her own right David wrote in the final lines of his first book “Public service demands its greatest sacrifices not from those in government but from their loved ones They experience many of the hardships and few of the rewards nurtured our children in their early years had told me that it would be understandable for his father to feel angry frustrated or at least a little bit grumpy as his body and mind fight the brutal disease that is Lewy body dementia he is as kind and as gentle as ever to everyone who interacts with him who include his longstanding colleague Joe Nye a steady stream of old friends and mentees and of course the nurses and other caregivers David Gergen has perhaps never said the Golden rule this might be the first bullet for David's advice on leadership Nearly every interaction I have had with David involves the theme of service After the first election cycle with With Honor we helped elect or re-elect 19 members of Congress to work across party lines What would this group organize around initially across party lines David guided us to voluntary national service and it became one of the three key pillars of the Congressional caucus Voluntary national service is immensely popular in polling across party lines throughout the nation Yet fewer than 1% of young Americans now serve in the military and fewer than 5% serve in civilian capacities or public service jobs such as teachers and nurses With David's encouragement and the support of many in his vast network of friends we've since helped pass laws to expand AmeriCorps and Junior ROTC in high schools across the nation This will be an enduring focus of commitment for With Honor created a service year option for Maryland youth The book's title is inspired from the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes who had been left for dead on the battlefields of the Civil War fought for African American rights and became one of the most consequential Supreme Court justices in U.S Holmes said in a Memorial Day speech to veterans and their families in 1884: it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of his time at peril of being judged not to have lived It is given to us to learn at the outset that life is a profound and passionate thing.” David's view on service is best embodied in his own words reflecting on these lines by Holmes Hearts Touched With Fire: How Great Leaders are Made: “What a glorious way to capture what so many young men and women have experienced in one era after another in committing themselves to civic life but in devoting yourself to the service of others you find satisfaction that transcends your troubles service and leadership are inextricably bound together leadership at its best is service to others.” Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to David one of the few who makes it his life's work to serve our country and his fellow citizens and many of us who consider David a friend and mentor serve in uniform But his life shows us that anyone can serve and that service can save us Our country's brightest days can still be ahead of us through service to one another He impresses upon us a lifetime devoted to this cause Harvard Center for Public Leadership dinner after a Kennedy School Forum keynote on public service and bipartisan leadership co-hosted by With Honor with David’s colleague former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta who has been a champion for national service along with his son who is the founding Co-Chair of the For Country Caucus Gergen Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership David Gergen's remarks at the 2023 With Honor Gala Rye Barcott graduated from Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School as a Center for Public Leadership George Leadership Fellow and Reynolds Social Entrepreneurship Fellow He is the author of It Happened on the Way to War and the CEO and Co-Founder of With Honor.  there’s no question about the impact the park has had on Lower Hudson Valley residents and visitors for nearly a century Let’s take a look Westchester County has issued an emergency order to fast-track critical ride inspections and repairs at Playland Amusement Park following the departure of former operator Standard Amusements signed by Westchester Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor allows the County to bypass competitive bidding and immediately hire Zamperla an Italian-based global amusement ride manufacturer and maintain multiple rides left disassembled Standard’s abrupt exit in February left the park in disrepair jeopardizing Westchester’s ability to reopen it safely and on time Several rides were left partially disassembled "Standard's abrupt departure leaves the County with little time to properly carry out all of this work," the emergency order states The County owns 11 rides manufactured by Zamperla along with others made by a now-defunct company making Zamperla the only entity capable of quickly sourcing parts and performing specialized maintenance While the full cost of the work is not yet known the Parks Department will submit a formal contract to the Board of Legislators once it is assessed The emergency order marks the latest twist in a long-running dispute between Westchester County and Standard Amusements Standard sent a Notice of Termination in January 2025 claiming the County had breached the terms of their 2021 operating agreement citing poor financial performance and maintenance failures by Standard and the matter is now heading to arbitration in August Westchester has taken full control of park operations while bracing for legal The breakdown has reignited political tensions former County Executive candidate Christine Sculti criticized County Executive Ken Jenkins' administration "Imagine making taxpayers pay $36 million to NOT open Playland What the heck is Ken Jenkins doing to our county?!"  Westchester County Communications Director Catherine Cioffi blasted Sculti she said who helped broker the original public-private deal during her time in former County Executive Rob Astorino’s administration "Instead of protecting it, Christine Sculti handed us a disastrous, one-sided deal that sold out taxpayers and left the County holding the bag — having to return 100% of Standard Amusements’ investment," Cioffi wrote, as Daily Voice reported earlier this week.    who opposed the agreement as a legislator in 2016 claiming the deal ended up costing $125 million far above the $30 million originally projected Although county officials blame Standard Amusements for the park's current woes saying that it revitalized the park and that the County violated contractual obligations The company also argued that the county missed critical construction deadlines and fabricated defaults to cover up its own failures "Standard Amusements has made every effort to work with Westchester County to unwind our relationship in a responsible manner because we sincerely want the Park to have a successful season in 2025 and beyond," a spokesperson told Daily Voice on Wednesday They added that the company "prioritized both the improvement and maintenance of rides to the highest standard," including winterizing rides after the end of the 2024 season "consistent with both previous years and industry standards."  Jenkins has vowed to open Playland for the 2025 season calling it the “crown jewel” of Westchester The county says the emergency partnership with Zamperla is a critical step in making that happen "It's in the best interest of the county to enter into an agreement with Zamperla on an emergency basis as it is the most timely and fiscally efficient solution and will safeguard the county's property and secure the public safety of park attendees and staff," the emergency order states.  Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text Canadian producers often distill rye at a lower proof to use as a flavoring agent adding it to a base of nearly neutral corn or grain whisky distilled at 90 to 95 percent ABV Some Canadian ryes are just 10 percent rye the rest being high-proof corn whisky.  By contrast, U.S. law requires rye whiskey to have at least 51 percent rye in the mash bill and be distilled below 80 percent ABV (with most producers keeping it under 70 percent) distillers co-ferment all the grains together while Canadian producers distill each grain separately and then blend them after aging This lets them tailor each step—milling Canada doesn’t have that restriction Lighter blended whiskies often age in used barrels 100-percent rye components age in new or lightly used casks This flexibility allows Canadian distillers to assemble a multitude of whiskies through the art of blending for taste and consistency.  WhistlePig’s success with its 10-year-old, 100-percent Canadian rye in 2010 pushed Canadian producers to reevaluate their own rye stocks. J.P. Wiser’s had actually released Lot No. 40 Rye back in 1998 made from a single grain but it didn’t catch on and was discontinued WhistlePig’s popularity likely motivated the brand to bring it back in 2012 Inside the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor 40 is made at the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor under the guidance of master blender Don Livermore Originally created by Michael Booth in 1998 the whisky was inspired by his ancestor Joshua Booth who likely made whisky himself in the late 1700s in Ernestown the site of Booth's ancestor's gristmill and distillery The original recipe used 90 percent unmalted and 10 percent malted Canadian rye When Livermore relaunched the brand in 2012 he updated the formula to use 100 percent unmalted rye and microbial enzymes in place of malt The whisky is made using a column still followed by a 12,000-liter traditional copper pot still Canadian law requires a minimum of three years 40 drinks like a softer version of American rye especially those made with 95 percent rye and 5 percent barley It’s complex and balanced enough for sipping 40 is noticeably cheaper than a similarly aged WhistlePig 6 Year Rye so using it in cocktails doesn’t feel extravagant While Canadian rye varies widely in style and quality many 100 percent rye expressions are worth seeking out—especially for fans of American straight rye ShareSaveCommentLifestyleSpiritsWhiskey Of The Week: Knob Creek Bourbon X RyeByTony Sachs Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights Tony Sachs is an NY-based writer covering spirits probably the most frequently consumed cocktails in my apartment And one of the great dilemmas I have faced for most of the years I’ve been making and consuming Manhattans is When my wife has a preference (usually rye) I generally go bourbon — there’s just something about the beef/bourbon combo that works perfectly I can spend so long agonizing over which whiskey to use that occasionally I’ll lose interest in having a cocktail altogether and just give up Knob Creek's bourbon/rye blend is a boon to indecisive Manhattan drinkers like me and that too has made it into many a glass at my place since it was released — probably even a little before it launched as I think we boozy scribes got to taste it before the general public did isn’t just the perfect ratio of 70% KC’s classic 7 year old rye to 30% of their 9 year old bourbon It’s also been upped from a perfectly terrific 100 proof to an even-better 113 proof That little bit of extra alcohol makes for an even more flavorful whiskey that will stand up to water If you blend an excellent bourbon and an excellent rye together in the right proportions and futz with the proof just enough it’s kind of a no-brainer that it’ll be good It’s a perfect balance of bourbon sweetness and rye spice It’s an excellent sipper as well as the ideal mixing whiskey And at a mere $45 for a bottle of the stuff just buy a bottle of the bourbon and a bottle of the rye and blend your own Apr 8, 2025 12:00 PM EDTAmerican rye whiskey generally falls into two categories. There's whiskey with relatively low amounts of rye in the mash bill often somewhere just above the legally required 51 percent and then there's whiskey with 95 percent rye grain and 5 percent malted barley.  Bulleit Rye falls definitively into the latter category, which makes sense given that it’s produced at Indiana distillery MGP, which is famous for that very high-rye recipe. Bulleit Rye has become a popular brand over the years due to the fact that it’s an incredibly versatile spirit which can be sipped on its own, but is also a fantastic component for making classic whiskey cocktails.  Bulleit is owned by drinks company Diageo and has become one of the top-selling bourbon brands in the U.S who's no longer associated with the brand after being accused of abuse by his daughter in 2019 Bulleit was supposedly inspired by his great-great-grandfather’s high-rye recipe so it follows suit with more rye grain in the mash bill than many other bourbons has been contract distilled at other distilleries for years but the brand just released its first in-house produced whiskey and according to Bulleit whiskey blender Samantha Johnson it holds an important place in the portfolio.  “The bartending community and dedicated fans latched on to our rye,” Johnson says “Its place in our lineup feels natural given our signature high-rye bourbon mash bill clove-like spicy character that defines Bulleit taking those signature notes to new heights.” Bulleit Rye at a GlanceBulleit Rye is a bartender favorite because it mixes well in cocktails.  Pros and Cons of Bulleit RyeProsConsGreat value Bulleit Rye ReviewBulleit Rye is a flavorful and spicy whiskey “When we set out to create our Bulleit Rye Whiskey we wanted to craft something distinct,” she says “The 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley mash bill allows us to maximize the natural enzymatic process essential for fermentation while fully showcasing the unmistakable spice and complexity that rye grain delivers.”  but the blending team at Bulleit has managed to produce a whiskey that's unique.  all of which are balanced by the flavors picked up after years inside barrels there's a nice bit of heat on the finish it’s just enough to bring some added flavor to the palate whether you’re sipping this affordable rye whiskey or using it to whip up some cocktails How to Drink Bulleit RyeDrink your whiskey how you like it I always recommend starting off with a neat pour first to get to know any whiskey and at 90 proof Bulleit Rye brings a little oomph to that first sip.  That higher ABV also means that it stands up to other ingredients in a cocktail and indeed this is a staple at many bars and restaurants.  He started having it contract distilled at a Kentucky distillery soon thereafter but they looked nothing like the ones seen on store shelves today medicinal design wouldn’t come till later and turned out to be a very successful marketing device for the brand.  In 1997, Seagrams purchased Bulleit, and switched production to the Four Roses distillery and its assets went to Diageo and Pernod Ricard Inside the Bulleit visitor's center in Shelbyville Bulleit’s contract distilleries have shifted over the years but Diageo opened a Bulleit distillery in Shelbyville in 2017 and moved its visitor center there two years later There's a Diageo distillery in Lebanon but its operations there are temporarily paused.  Although Bulleit recently released its first in-house produced bourbon Johnson says that rye production will remain in Indiana for now.  “We’re incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with MGP for Bulleit Rye,” Johnson says we’re always exploring new opportunities at Bulleit Distilling Company so while there’s nothing to announce at the moment we’re always looking ahead.” How Bulleit Rye Is MadeBulleit Rye is produced at MGP from a mash bill of 95 percent rye and five percent malted barley The whiskey is aged in new charred oak barrels every batch is evaluated to determine the quality of the whiskey once it’s fully mature.  “The final whiskey is then expertly blended under the guidance of our team at Bulleit Distilling Company who ensure that each pour of Bulleit Rye is the same tasting experience,” she says “I am passionate about ensuring the bold which means I work with MGP every step of the way from grain quality to the distillate.” If You Like Bulleit Rye You’ll Also Like…Rossville UnionLike Bulleit Rye Rossvile Union Rye Whiskey is also produced at MGP but released under the distillery’s in-house Ross & Squibb
