SACO (WGME) -- A Saco woman who has been trying to get out of a Florida timeshare amid her husband's battle with Alzheimer's disease is finally free from the contract—after the CBS13 I-Team stepped in
Barbara Labbe first shared her story with the CBS13 I-Team earlier this month, explaining how she and her husband Richard had enjoyed years of family vacations at their timeshare near Disney World, managed by Vacation Village Resorts. But after Richard’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, travel became impossible.
"I’m 82, my husband is 82, and he’s not in good health," Labbe said, explaining the hardship they were facing. "There's no way I could take him on a plane. No way."
Labbe says she reached out to the resort multiple times, asking to be released from the contract under a hardship clause. Despite the medical circumstances, she was told she didn’t qualify for relief.
“I’m not asking for anything big,” Labbe said. “I’m just asking for them to be human and have understanding—and they didn’t.”
Desperate for help, Labbe contacted the I-Team. After we reached out to Vacation Village Resorts’ parent company Vacatia for comment, the company reversed course and acknowledged the Labbe's should qualify for hardship relief.
Within weeks, all necessary paperwork was completed. Labbe now says the timeshare is officially out of her name—and she no longer has to worry about the financial burden it carried.
“Thank you so much,” Labbe said. “This means everything to me.”
The CBS13 I-Team is On Your Side, committed to getting results and digging deeper into the issues that matter to you.

BUTTE — In its pursuit of a third consecutive championship — and in a nerve-racking moment — Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale simply couldn’t be denied
A big third quarter turned a five-point halftime deficit into a 10-point lead
and the Mavericks held off hungry Roy-Winifred in the final minutes to prevail 53-47 on Saturday and win the Class C girls basketball state championship at the Civic Center
Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale may have seen its 73-game winning streak snapped earlier this postseason
but the championship was always the year-end priority
And it wasn't exactly expected from the outside looking in
good kids come through," said Mavericks guard Shelbi LaBrie
"I'd say the first few years when we got it
"We didn't have a close game for two years before this
And so we worked hard for this one and fought for it
The final moments of the game were pressure-filled for both teams
Roy-Winifred's Kinzlee Wickens scored off a turnover to trim the Mavericks' lead to 50-47
The Red Raiders then forced a five-second violation on the in-bound but gave the ball right back with a turnover of their own
LaBrie then stepped to the line for two bonus free throws with 30.4 seconds left
hitting 1 of 2 to extend Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale's lead to 51-47
and LaBrie followed by making two more foul shots with 13.7 seconds on the clock
as the Red Raiders were unable to score on their final possession
"They came out in that super-aggressive man-to-man defense
and we had a few turnovers," Roy-Winifred coach Julie Ewen
whose team was outscored 21-6 in the eight minutes after halftime
Their man-to-man defense got us there in the third quarter."
Roy-Winifred led by as many as eight points in the first quarter
A BaiLee McColly putback before the buzzer of a high-scoring first quarter pulled the Mavericks within three points
CharLee McColly then tied it with an offensive rebound and subsequent three-point play to open the second
but a late burst fueled by a 3 and a layup inside within the final 1:10 — both by Lyla Ewen — allowed the Red Raiders to go into halftime ahead 28-23
Roy-Winifred hit five 3-pointers in the first half
Lyla Ewen led all scorers with 11 points at intermission
The Mavericks came out in the third quarter looking like
and CharLee and BaiLee McColly both converted inside to help Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale reel off an 11-0 run
Gracie Wasson it a 3-pointer and LaBrie again scored off a steal as the Mavericks led 39-30 with 3:30 left in the third
A LaBrie 3 with 10 seconds left in the third gave Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale a 44-34 advantage
Roy-Winifred got within 48-42 on a spinning shot by Jennifer Ewen
then Claire Wickens made a huge 3 with 1:45 left to make cut it to 48-45
"We were really struggling in the first half
I think we were all just really amped up and excited to be here," LaBrie said
"The talk in the locker room (at halftime) was more like
"So we just tried to do little things right when we came back out
and now they're adding more hardware to a growing trophy case
The Mavericks finished the season with a 25-1 record while the Red Raiders
LaBrie finished with a game-high 18 points
CharLee and BaiLee McColly combined for 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting and 17 rebounds
Lyla Ewen's 16 points and seven rebounds led Roy-Winifred
Melstone beat Scobey 51-25 to claim the third-place trophy
Maggie Eike led three Broncs id double figures with 17 points
Scobey was led by Kaytie Aanstad's 12 points
Melstone finished 26-1 while Scobey ended with a 20-9 record

Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale saw its 73-game winning streak snapped
But the Mavericks aren't ready to relinquish their throne atop Class C girls basketball
In their pursuit of a third consecutive championship
the Mavericks ran past Denton-Geyser-Stanford-Geraldine 53-27 in the semifinal round of the state tournament Thursday at the Civic Center
Roy-Winifred dispatched Scobey 46-35 to set up a rematch of last year's championship game
which ended Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale's long winning streak in the District 3C title game earlier this year
was trying to set up another grudge match with the Mavericks
Instead it will be championship déjà vu from last season
a game which the Mavericks won by 31 points
Both Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale and Roy-Winifred will have Friday off as part of the four-day state tournament structure utilized by Class C
Their championship matchup is set to tip off Saturday at 7 p.m
Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale showed its state tournament mettle
four assists and five steals as the Mavericks marched into the championship game for the third straight year
LaBrie was a catalyst to the Mavericks gaining separation in the second quarter
as they outscored DGSG by nine points to take a 28-13 lead into halftime
Bailey McColly added nine points for Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale
while Emerson Downing had seven points and four rebounds
Downing also had three steals to aid the Mavericks' defensive performance
Coach Amber Erickson's Mavericks are trying to become the first Class C girls program to win three straight championships since Belt did it from 2012-14
Briella Becker had a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds
The Bearcats slip into a loser-out contest on Friday against Melstone at 3 p.m
Roy-Winifred jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back in advancing to Saturday's championship game
Hannah Ewen and Lyla Ewen were the pace-setters
and combined for 26 points for the Red Raiders
Lyla Ewen pulled down a game-high nine rebounds
Scobey cut its deficit to 26-24 midway through the third
but a 9-0 run by Roy-Winifred after that proved to be the key stretch
Hannah Ewen 's midcourt steal and basket gave Roy-Winifred a 35-26 advantage with about 2:00 on the clock in the third quarter
The Red Raiders carried that nine-point lead into the fourth
An Isabella Edwards 3 made the score 42-28 in favor of Roy-Winifred with about 4:00 remaining
The Spartans fell into loser-out action against Plenty Coups on Friday at 4:30 p.m

SACO (WGME) – A convenience store in Saco closed over the holidays
leaving a number of employees still owed money for the work that they did
Hillview Market in Saco closed in early December
That’s when employees noticed their paychecks starting to bounce
"A lot of us have discovered that our paychecks have bounced,” former Hillview Market employee Amy Schuhmacher said
Schuhmacher was one of the original employees at Hillview Market
She says business was good and doesn't know exactly why it closed
What she does know is that she and her co-workers are owed money for the work they did in those final weeks
it's been devastating,” Schuhmacher said
They're facing possible evictions at this point."
Justin Main was the owner and operator of Hillview Market
He says he had intended to use the income from the final week to pay employees
He says he lost everything when the store closed
and he says he's already paid two employees what he owed them
Main says he plans to pay back the rest of the employees as soon as possible
PORTLAND (WGME) – There was an exciting moment of home ownership in Saco Tuesday
Habitat for Humanity rewarded Justin with keys to a new home for him and his daughter
He got the keys directly from the mayor and thanked Habitat for Humanity very much for this fresh start
“The volunteers and John the builder really did an excellent job making it look safe and really magnificent,” Justin said
Tuesday's festivities included Justin’s family and friends along with the volunteers from Habitat for Humanity
SACO (WGME) -- A medical spa in Saco appears to have recently closed without warning
the Secretary of State confirms the business has not been in good standing with the state since early November
it didn't stop them from offering Black Friday deals on gift cards that can no longer be used
"People are really upset," says longtime LuxeMD client Rebecca McKenney
"They bought gift cards for Christmas presents
all of these people are out that money."
McKenney paid $1,200 for a series of laser treatments
We asked: "Did you have any warning that this was going to happen?"
And she said that they found out when we all found out
It's just very discouraging there's people out there like this
McKenney also signed up for a 12-month membership for Botox treatments
only to now learn her monthly payments cannot be canceled
Credit card companies have told her and other clients that they will have to dispute the charge every month
the husband and wife that owned it," she says
LuxeMD in Saco removed its social media pages
This message is all we heard: "We're sorry we can't take your call right now
we learned they are still accepting online payments for gift cards and prepaid treatments costing as much as $10,000
A LuxeMD client posted this: "Blows my mind that they are continuing to sell gift cards
and prepaid services that cannot be redeemed."
"It's fraud," says Rebecca Mckenney
"And these people are out all that money."
The LuxeMD phone message ended with this: "Thank you for choosing LuxeMD for your aesthetic needs."
we still don't know if the business is officially closed
We're told the new owners of the building had planned to lease space to LuxeMD but hasn't seen or heard from them in more than a week
The Maine Attorney General's Office is now involved. They tell CBS13 that two clients have filed complaints against LuxeMD, and they encourage any other clients or staff impacted by this to file a complaint at the link here

SACO (WGME) -- Several intersections in Saco and Old Orchard Beach are getting some attention for being considered "high crash locations."
the public got a chance to weigh in on the problem and possible improvements
things that don't get reported,” Old Orchard Beach resident David Pelton said
“So there's the actual accidents and the near accidents and I think all of that really combines to needing some change in that intersection”
The Maine DOT reports 37 crashes between 2021 and 2023 at the "Halfway Intersection" in Old Orchard Beach
locals say constant traffic is moving too fast
“It's called ‘Disfunction Junction’ by the locals,” Pelton said
That’s one of the "problem areas" identified in a study by the Maine DOT
The three entities are looking to make the roads safer along the I-195 and Ocean Park corridor
“I think you kind of can see that there are some concerns
so that’s really what the study looks to long-term alleviate,” Saco Planning Director Emily Cole-Prescott said
The study also calls for adding a traffic light at that five-road intersection in Old Orchard Beach and building a roundabout in Saco connecting I-195 and Ocean Park Road
adds crosswalks and bike paths and reconfigures the traffic flow
“We feel the operations of the corridor will be better where there's back-to-back signals,” Don Ettinger of Gorrill Palmer Engineering said
While most of the public expressed their support for the project at Monday's meeting
some leaders in Saco aren't on board with part of the plan that would require local drivers to go get off the highway
drive to the roundabout and then into Saco instead of going right from the highway to Ocean Park Road
“To force that traffic to be rerouted down to the base of the spur
it's not going to do anything to alleviate the traffic,” Saco City Councilor Joe Gunn said
Saco's mayor and Gunn say they want to make sure there's room for that intersection layout to be changed before the project moves forward
There's a years-long road ahead before things potentially break ground
including securing funding for the estimated $15.9 million project

Maine (WGME) -- Temporary riprap currently holds up a portion of the Saco Riverwalk in Biddeford and the fear is a future storm could further erode the wall and bring the smokestack down
The wall was damaged in a November 2021 storm
In 2023, the CBS13 I-Team covered this story extensively
We met with Biddeford EMA Director Roby Fecteau
who believed the repair work qualified for federal aid
The project secured FEMA approval that fall
An access road was then put in the winter of 2024
some people in Biddeford are wondering about the work delay
FEMA approved roughly $4.5 million in federal funds for the repair project
The remaining amount would come from Biddeford taxpayers
that bid came in at $10.3 million,” said Roby Fecteau
"We've got to make this repair and it's a question of how we fund it,” Biddeford Mayor Martin Grohman said
the city was able to shave approximately $3 million with the new proposal of $7.5 million
which $2.8 million will to be covered by Biddeford
it carves even more and the tower comes down
Wipes out fifty cars," said one Biddeford councilor before the vote
what's the liability to the city on that?"
the city voted unanimously to move forward with the proposal
they hope to meet with contractors one more time this week
and Fecteau tells the I-Team work will start within the next 30 days
I remember the first time I ever went to Funtown USA
It was in the early 80s and it was amazing
The two things I fondly remember are the second floor arcade where I played Donkey Kong for the first time and the Galaxi Coaster
Galaxi Coasters were built but an Italian company that mass-produced their small footprint rollercoasters which were popular in amusement parks that didn't have typical wooden or steel rollercoasters
The company went bankrupt in 1993 but the Glaxi coaster endured in many parks. At one time at least 37 amusement parks were operating Galaxi coasters with two in Maine at Funtown and Palace Playland
Galaxi coasters have a track length of 1,099 feet
with a ride time of two minutes. Its maximum speed is 31 mph
The track is steel and trains have two
four-seat cars, for 8 passengers per train
What made the Galaxi unique is that it was designed to be disassembled to either be stored for the winter or loaded up on trailers and transported elsewhere
The ride is designed to be transportable and disassembled onto trailers
The Galaxi Coaster debuted at Funtown in 1978 and at the time

SACO (WGME) -- A Saco woman is fighting to free herself from a timeshare contract that has become a burden she can no longer bear
who have spent over a decade making cherished memories at their timeshare near Disney World
now find themselves trapped in an agreement they can no longer use due to Richard's declining health
the Labbe family enjoyed vacations at their Vacation Village Resort timeshare in Kissimmee
Barbara and Richard purchased their first week in 2008
followed by a second one a few years later
with Richard battling advanced Alzheimer's
hoping to be released from the timeshare contract due to her husband’s medical condition
and he’s not in good health," Barbara said
"There's no way I could take him on a plane
Labbe says she sent a letter from Richard’s doctor to Vacation Village Resorts
hoping it would qualify them for a hardship exemption
Labbe received an email back stating she did not qualify for the company’s relinquishment program because she had rented the property in 2024
Am I supposed to continue paying for this for the rest of my life and pass it on to my kids
If someone could please help that would be so great
The CBS13 I-Team reached out directly to Vacation Village Resorts trying to find out more about why the Labbe's claim to get out of the contract was denied
acknowledging they should be eligible for hardship relief
"Vacation Village Resorts does have a Relinquishment Program for Owners that are experiencing a financial hardship
and situations in which timeshare ownership may no longer suit the Owner’s lifestyle," a spokesperson wrote in an email
"Given the details of this Owner’s case
this Owner should be eligible for hardship relief."
Paula Fleming from the Better Business Bureau emphasized that Barbara's situation isn’t unique
I have heard about this year over year being an issue," she said "It’s disturbing to see how often it takes a member of the media to contact them for them to do the right thing."
with numerous complaints from other customers facing similar issues to Labbe's
"I would also encourage people to read the reviews and read the complaints and take it a step further and read the responses to the complaints," Fleming said
While the situation has been a frustrating ordeal for Barbara Labbe
she remains hopeful that the resort will follow through and help her break free from the timeshare
"I’m just very distressed by the whole thing and I don’t need more stress in my life," she said
Barbara’s story is a reminder to consumers to be cautious when entering into timeshare agreements and to know their rights when trying to exit them

As he stood on the Memorial Stadium pole vault runway in Great Falls
Saco’s Blaine Downing knew that Skol Viking applause from the grandstands was for him
The ritual first gained widespread attention as Iceland’s soccer team made an unexpected run in the Euro 2016 championships but has since been adapted by other sporting crowds over the world
it was being performed as Downing attempted to break the Class C pole vault record at last year’s state track and field meet
the crowd’s claps reaching a crescendo by the time Downing launched himself into the air on each attempt
and all of a sudden that starts,” Downing recalled
knocking the bar off the standards that were raised 15 feet
and he broke the Class C record of Arlee’s Rafe Espinoza that had stood since 2001
It also gave Downing his second straight pole vault title
muscle it out and you'll get over it,’” Downing said
From the time a pole vaulter starts rocking back and forth on the runway
Depending on how many clearances a vaulter ends up making
they may have competed for 45 seconds total
a former two-time Class C pole vault champion from Hinsdale and NCAA Division II indoor All-American at Minot State
who works with pole vaulters across northeast Montana (including Downing) with any spare time that his farming life affords him
it’s not those 45 seconds or so where Downing stands out
that a track-and-field athlete has to themselves
“Blaine does a pretty good job of that,” Capdeville continued
meaning Downing’s ability to compete worry-free once he gets going
“He’s good at making little adjustments and not let it affect or ruin his mindset for the rest of the event.”
And just what is Downing’s mindset when it comes to the pole vault
with his own Class C record or perhaps even an all-class record to overtake
It’s been an evolving approach to the event
It wasn’t until Downing placed second at state in the pole vault as a freshman that both Capdeville and Downing’s mom
saw Blaine’s commitment to the event take a turn toward the more serious
“I think once he started seeing some success
I could just tell he really matured,” Capdeville said
but he went for me from being this kid to a flat competitor.”
While he’s friends with the other area pole vaulters he competes with — a lot of them train together on occasion during gatherings in Glasgow — Downing said that when he’s in the pole vault area
It’s an approach that has served him well in his other athletic endeavors
He’s also the defending Class C 400-meter champion
and he has signed to play college football at Montana State University after a highly successful fall season playing for the Malta Mustangs
but he said pole vaulters are usually among a track team’s best athletes
The Mustangs’ football staff put Downing all over the field
linebacker; anywhere he was needed on Malta’s march to the Class B state championship with a win over Manhattan in November
it’s that football future putting up hurdles for Downing this spring
The Montana State coaching staff has tasked Downing with putting on as much weight as he can before fall camp
will affect his vaulting technique as well as the need to find larger poles to accommodate his growing strength and weight
But priorities being what they are — and there is no denying his Montana State football future is his top priority now — doesn’t mean Downing is letting up on the track
He would like to top the Class C record he set last season and also take a stab at the all-class mark of 16-4 set by Helena’s Chase Smith in 2015
I’d be happy with,” said a realistic Downing
whose younger sister Emerson placed second in the pole vault last year as a freshman and whose younger brother Trey has started vaulting
One priority that will never change for Downing is his grandfather Dale
who passed away when Downing was in seventh grade
he came across a Facebook post his mom made about her son and her late father
he gets a little closer to Grandpa Dale,’” Downing said
that's kind of stuck with me a little bit to just to think about that
Maybe Grandpa Dale was one of those pairs of hands helping to push Downing to new heights as he stood on the runway last spring at Memorial Stadium

SACO (WGME) -- Local packaging retailer "Pack Edge" now has a new facility in Saco
A ribbon cutting event was held Wednesday afternoon to unveil the new building at 955 Portland Road
Pack Edge makes temperature-sensitive packaging for products like seafood and biomedical supplies and is the largest manufacturer of ice packs in New England
and Pack Edge President James Freeman says this new facility is a huge milestone
"I still come around the corner and I look at the building and I'm like
I can't believe that this is where we're at,'” Freeman said
but this is going to really allow us to expand the reach that we do."
Freeman says the pandemic really accelerated the direct-to-consumer market
and he says they are also developing curbside recyclable products.
