With the franchise having just wrapped up its 40th season in Sacramento
now seems as good a time as any to reflect on the past and celebrate some of the best players who have ever suited up for the Kings
I will feature the Sacramento Kings’ “All-Time Starting Five” one player at a time
Last week’s article focused on the Small Forward spot with a fan favorite and one of the greatest shooters to ever play in the NBA: Peja Stojaković
we move over to the Shooting Guard spot to highlight the career of one of the best scorers of the 1990s: Mitch Richmond
Mitch Richmond was drafted 5th overall in 1988 by *that other team in Northern California* and was voted NBA Rookie of the Year for the 1988-1989 season
Richmond made an impact in his first couple of years in the league as part of “Run TMC” alongside Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin
fast-paced style of basketball for coach Don Nelson
Richmond was traded to Sacramento and immediately became the franchise’s first true star player since the team had moved from Kansas City in 1985
“Rock” rewarded the Kings organization for bringing him in by making six consecutive All-Star Game appearances in his seven seasons in Sacramento
Richmond was named the NBA All-Star Game MVP for the 1995 edition of the game
To celebrate Mitch Richmond's 55th birthday we showcase some of his best plays and the origin of his nickname, "The Rock!" #NBABDAY pic.twitter.com/lSGkMiOaQg
A Florida native and star at Kansas State University
Richmond endeared himself to the Sacramento Kings fan base by being an absolute bucket between 1993 and 1998
he averaged over 23 points per game to go along with 3.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists
Richmond shot over 45% from the field and over 40% from three point range over that span
earning himself the reputation of being both a sharpshooter and a pure scorer
He was a nightmare for opposing defenses to guard
as defenders who sat back too far could only watch as Richmond buried threes
Defenders who closed out too hard to prevent the three point shot would be left in the dust as Richmond drove to the hoop

Mitch Richmond received consistent (and well-earned) accolades for his stellar individual play
In addition to the six All-Star Game appearances
Richmond was also named to the All-NBA Third team twice and the All-NBA Second team three times
Sacramento made the playoffs just once in Richmond’s stay with the team
a first round exit at the hands of the eventual Western Conference champion Seattle SuperSonics in the 1995-1996 season
The Kings did manage to take one game from the Sonics
as Richmond led the way with 37 points in a Game 2 victory

However, Richmond did play a role in what would become the Kings’ most successful run as a franchise, as Sacramento traded Richmond and Otis Thorpe to the Washington Wizards for Chris Webber. This move began the transformation of the Kings from consistent lottery team to annual playoff and title contender.
Richmond was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, and inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He has also had his #2 jersey retired by the Sacramento Kings franchise. Although the teams he played on did not achieve much success, Richmond has remained a fan favorite amongst Kings fans.

Selected vehicles that were on display for top honors in four of the five West Coast events are eligible for the West Coast Challenge
The winner of the 2025 West Coast Challenge will take home a $12,500 prize
Here are six of the varied contenders that were on display at the 2025 Sacramento Autorama:
as we’d spent plenty of time poring over the twin-turbocharged SOHC V-8 at the Grand National Roadster Show
wondering how such a massive powerplant could fit so well into the confines of a Pantera engine bay that seemed strained by the factory 351
Greg Paboojian owns this intimidating Italian/American hybrid
The 489-cubic-inch SOHC engine was built by Hutchinson Racing Engines
and the mirror-image turbos were plumbed by SS Motorsports
Its warm tan interior upholstery is courtesy of Kevin Baumbach

The car’s factory frame was replaced by an Art Morrison chassis with a four-link suspension in the rear
and the trim was shaved to remove any blemishes from the Corvette’s body
The interior also features subtle modifications
including new bucket seats widened to fit the interior
and cooling and ventilation from Vintage Air
The Edsel brand got a bad start
A lot of the blame can be leveled at the controversial styling of the infamous “horse collar” grille that most Edsels were saddled with
The 1960 models got a completely new look that gave us a beautiful Villager wagon and just 777 copies of the Ranger sedan
is now a roadster which he has appropriately dubbed “Sledsel.”
The roof was removed and the windshield was angled back
It’s powered by a Ford 429 paired with a C6 automatic and features a custom interior with bucket seats from a 1964 Thunderbird
This is probably not what you imagine when you think of an Edsel
Eckert’s Rod & Custom first came on our radar when they built the Mach 40, a 1969 Mustang with the mid-engine powertrain from a Ford GT, in 2012. Doug Merganthaler called on Eckert’s to transform his 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner into a monstrously powerful Pro Touring machine by swapping in a 426-cubic-inch, 1,000 hp Hellephant crate engine and the suspension to help put it to the ground
It now rides on a custom chassis with independent rear suspension and a rear-mounted Tremec TR-6070 seven-speed transmission
The body features a ton of subtle modifications
including lengthened rocker panels and reshaped bumpers
yet it still looks like a proper muscle car
On of these is not like the others. Not sure the 53 Corvette deserves to be in this list. It’s a brand new car and did not start out as a corvette. I’m not saying it isn’t a custom but the other cars on this list started out as something else and were modified.
Wow, I sort of had the opposite reaction. If I were judging this event, the ’53 Corvette would win hands down. It’s styling is off the charts beautiful. And a bespoke V-12 engine! The others are nice Kustoms; basically well-restored cars, lowered, with a few custom details and the ubiquitous 21″ wheels. The ’53 Corvette may not have much GM DNA left in it, but it’s a beauty.
Jealousy will get you nowhere . Kindigit hands down is the best costomiser of our time. No comparison out there!
If your interested, I attended this event as well and have professional grade video of the event. You can message me if interested, 916 868 4719
You all are fighting the wrong battle you are in concord cars not hotrods you made them go a long time ago o boy it’s another stock car where is the customs they all look the same got one coming next year see how you like what 8 think customs are
I love love love seeing the craftsmanship of each and every automobile at these types of shows. Wether these cars have a past or not, is irrelevant. Its all about there passion, foresight and the quality of there craftsmanship that inspires us all…
Sacramento Autorama is not perfect but it is the only one we have in Sacramento.
Customs are not my favorite genre, but as a guy who has fabricated (of a fashion) and attempted body and paint work for decades, I certainly appreciate the imagination, engineering, work and skill-levels of what it takes to make these cars. At a show, I don’t drool over them because I want them – but I do take time to look over the details and craftsmanship. Too often, IMO, the builders overdo the customizing stuff – that green Corvette is just about right to me.
Also; if you’re going to post a comment, at least get your grammar and spelling right.
Due to the resources and money spent the 53 Vette should win. The other cars deserve recognition as well and every piece of those vehicles get massaged in the build process. Hard to beat a hand formed ground up design and build. Parameters need to be set for these high end builds. Unless the parameters are anything goes at any cost your willing to lay out…
I want to like that Pantera. The wheels too big and the car slammed over them is a terrible look.

I want a MALL – not housing – not hotel – but somewhere I can go for quality shopping
entertainment and a fun place to spend time with friends – it used to be like that
I remember when everyone fought for parking spaces at the mall
We don’t need a Home Depot when we already have two within close distance. We don’t need a hotel – Citrus Heights is not a “Go To” place for conventions or sports and is not near a freeway. As Carly Harms stated in her letter on April 19th, I fear what the clientele would be
I’m not a fast food eater but I understand and respect that many people are
Citrus Heights is already saturated with drive-through restaurants and I really crave something better – but I know that In ‘n Out is extremely popular and not near us and it sounds like it would attract a lot of customers so that would make sense
I remember when La Bou was at the Sunrise Mall and
I ate there all the time – it had healthy
reasonably priced food with take-out option – I miss it
I certainly don’t understand all the legalities of the relationship between Ethan Conrad and the City of Citrus Heights
but truly believe that someone has to buy him and any other owners out because they obviously don’t know or care about what the residents of Citrus Heights want
I don’t understand why are they allowed to just sit on it or offer unacceptable options
the Mall property is the only “Jewel” we have left in Citrus Heights and there has to be a common sense solution to making it a “I want to go” place again
I don’t want to have to go to Roseville or Folsom

The John Kobylt Show Hour 1 (05/02) - John goes scorched-earth on Sacramento lawmakers after a Democratic-led bill fails—one that would’ve made it a felony to buy 16- or 17-year-olds for sex in California
It’s a legal loophole that leaves the state alone in the nation where such a crime is still treated as a misdemeanor

questions the twisted logic behind opposing the bill

and it isn't taking long for changes to come to the rest of the coaching staff as well
The Athletic's Anthony Slater and Sam Amick announced that the Kings are expected to let go of Jay Triano
who was a lead assistant under Mike Brown and Christie for the latter half of last season
as well as Jawad Williams and three other assistant coaches
The Kings will not retain lead assistant Jay Triano as part of Doug Christie’s staff, sources tell me and @Sam_Amick
Continues organizational overhaul: Jawad Williams and three other assistants also out.Leandro Barbosa will remain as part of Christie’s reworked staff
as all of the assistant coaches were chosen by Brown and not Christie
it's also no surprise that Leandro Barbosa will remain with the Kings and help build out the new staff under Christie
The two appeared to have a close connection and work together as assistant coaches the last three seasons
Triano was not only the lead assistant but the most experienced coach on the Kings bench
as well as the offensive coordinator of the group
His departure means that the Kings offense could get a major overhaul next year with someone else running the helm of the offense
Jawad Williams was the director of player development
leaving another important position vacant for the time being
It's a role that former King Bobby Jackson has specialized in in the past
Adding onto the mid-season departure of Luke Loucks
the Kings coaching staff is getting a major overhaul this offseason
which should be the case under a new head coach and isn't uncommon
Christie was dealt an extremely tough hand last season when he took over
It was clear during the season that Christie was taking on a lot of the responsibilities himself
but also one who had to do more than most with limited resources
Worth noting that Triano - the former Raptors, Suns and Canadian team head coach - still had time left on his deal. Jawad Williams, Riccardo Fois, Robbie Lemons and Sam Logwood also out, per sources. https://t.co/CNrD3mHIj2
Time will tell who he brings in to help him during the season
but ideally he'll find someone with experience to help replace Triano and the other assistants
Either way, this marks another series of changes to the Kings as they head into an offseason overhaul from top-down.

Shaquille O'Neal has agreed to become the Sacramento State men's basketball general manager
Retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck last year accepted the GM position with his old school
O'Neal won four NBA titles, three NBA Finals MVPs and a league MVP during his 19-year career in the NBA. He is currently an analyst on TNT's "Inside the NBA" show. He also served as a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings from 2013 to 2022
Sacramento State is slated to open a new basketball facility on campus this fall
an alum and the youngest president ever appointed in the California State University system
has been aggressive in his approach with the athletic programs -- and the addition of Shaquille O'Neal continues that
The Hornets hired Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran and former Kings star, last month. He replaced Michael Czepil, who served as interim head coach for the 2024-25 season after David Patrick left to take a job as associate head coach at LSU.
Sacramento State went 7-25 this past season under Czepil and had gone 28-42 in two campaigns with Patrick at the helm. The program has not made an NCAA tournament since moving up to Division I in 1991 and has posted a winning record only twice since then, going 21-12 in 2014-15 and 16-14 in 2019-20.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass returned to Sacramento Wednesday to lobby state leaders for money to help close the city’s nearly $1-billion budget hole
This is Bass’ second visit to the state Capitol in as many months — a homecoming of sorts for a former Assembly speaker who helped navigate the state’s 2009 budget crisis
She is undoubtedly well aware that the state is facing its own economic headwinds
very important that we solidify those relationships,” Bass said Wednesday
restating the importance of keeping the city’s issues front and center even while state legislators fend off their own budgetary crises
because the city was in the rare situation of not having Southern California representation atop either house of the Legislature: Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) is from Northern California and Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) hails from Central California
Two days ago, Bass presented her proposed budget, which would cut more than 2,700 city positions — about 1,650 of them through layoffs. Bass is hoping to avoid those layoffs, either through state funding or by renegotiating promised raises that have added considerable heft to personnel costs for the next fiscal year.
Those rising personnel costs are one of several factors compounding the city’s budget crisis, including the financial toll of the January wildfires and subsequent recovery efforts, spiraling legal payouts and a weakening national economy.
California
Faced with a nearly $1-billion budget shortfall
Bass released a budget after her speech that calls for the elimination of more than 2,700 city positions — including 1,650 layoffs
Bass has repeatedly lobbied Newsom and other state leaders for a relief package that could avert some or all of the job cuts. During her March trip to Sacramento, she and four members of the City Council met with Newsom as well as leaders from both chambers of the Legislature
After that trip, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor (D-Hawthorne), who chairs the Los Angeles County Legislative Delegation, sent a letter signed by 22 other members of the state legislature to the Assembly budget committee requesting funding for the city.
Before Bass’ arrival, some Democrats at the Capitol were confused about her need to return to Sacramento and meet with lawmakers so soon after her visit last month. Her appearance was viewed by those Democrats as more about style than substance, giving her an opportunity to stand before cameras and show she is trying to address the city’s budget woes.
The city’s situation is further complicated by the fact that its budget process is happening concurrently with the state’s, meaning the City Council will have to move forward with its budget deliberations before knowing if state money is coming.
The governor’s revision to the state budget will be released in mid-May, so at that point, the city will have some idea of whether substantial resources may be coming from the state. But the revision is just a starting point for final budgetary negotiations between the governor and the Legislature, and the state budget won’t be completed until at least mid-June, weeks after the deadline for the City Council to approve its own budget.
Bass met with legislative leaders Wednesday but did not sit down with Newsom, who is in the middle of preparing his budget revision.
Bass told reporters that she was unable to get onto Newsom’s schedule. She stopped by his office hours later for an unplanned meeting with two of his top aides.
Her request for financial relief from the state could be a tough ask in a challenging budget year for California.
The state is facing higher than expected costs to provide healthcare coverage to low-income residents as well as the potential loss of billions of dollars as a result of federal funding cuts and state revenue declines from President Trump’s tariff policies. The tariffs on foreign imports and retaliatory levies from other countries are expected to hit tourism, agriculture and the technology sector particularly hard.
The state’s financial outlook is dire enough that it could swing from earlier projections of a relatively neutral budget to a staggering deficit in the year ahead.
Bass was joined Wednesday by City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, who was pushing for legislation to be introduced that would cap the damages that plaintiffs in lawsuits can seek against public entities. According to Feldstein Soto, 38 states cap these damages, and she would like to see a similar cap in California.
“We’re trying to bring California more into the mainstream and make sure that we don’t pay taxpayer dollars out unnecessarily or in disproportionate amounts,” Feldstein Soto said.

Williams transferred out of UCF to play under the tutelage of Bibby and Shaq at a basketball program adding big names
The freshman guard averaged 5.1 points in 14 minutes per game over 18 games for the Knights last season
Williams left Memphis for UCF following an April 2023 arrest in which he faced nine felonies and a lengthy prison sentence after he was charged for allegedly firing a gun at a car full of people who had arrived at his home
and he pleaded guilty in November 2023 to a single felony count of making criminal threats with provisions that would allow him to avoid jail time
He was sentenced to a year of summary probation in August and his felony charge was reduced to a misdemeanor
clearing the way for him to make his collegiate debut with the Knights last season
as he was away from the team while the legal process played out
has been aggressive in his approach with the athletic programs
ESPN's Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf contributed to this report
Mike Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran and former Sacramento Kings star, has been named the new men's basketball head coach at Sacramento State
who served as interim head coach for the 2024-25 season
"I'm ecstatic to announce Mike Bibby as the new head coach of Sacramento State men's basketball
and welcome him back to the community of Sacramento," athletic director Mark Orr said in a statement
"Mike will recruit talented student-athletes and develop a team culture that embodies success both on and off the court
I am convinced that Mike will pour every ounce of his energy into Sacramento State and engage the entire Sacramento region
I could not be more excited about the future of our program."
Bibby said he is excited to return to the city where he experienced much of his professional success as a member of the Kings
but a storybook story of coming back to Sacramento for basketball purposes and instead of playing now I'll be coaching and do my best to change this program around and turn it into a winning program."
Bibby is already in the process of putting together a staff and was hired at the same time the NCAA transfer portal opened
Bibby said he will target the portal aggressively in his first season to improve the roster with players who will fit his style of playing a fast-paced game featuring an aggressive
"We're going to get kids that will want to come play and want to come win," he said
negotiated the agreement with school officials in recent days
The university is slated to open a new basketball facility on campus next fall
has been aggressive in his approach with the athletic programs -- and the hiring of Bibby continues that
Bibby previously spent six years as a coach at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, where he played on the school's first state championship team as a student in 1996 before competing for two seasons at the University of Arizona. He led the Wildcats to the 1997 NCAA championship as a freshman
Bibby was drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies the next year
He played for several teams over his NBA career from 1998 to 2012
5.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 1,001 games
His most successful NBA stint came with the Kings from 2001 to 2008
which included one Western Conference finals berth
two West semifinal runs and averages of 17.6 points
5.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 476 regular-season games
Bibby guided Shadow Mountain to four consecutive state championships
winning a total of five over his run from 2013 to 2019
Sacramento State went 7-25 this season under Czepil
who was promoted last spring after David Patrick left to take a job as associate head coach at LSU
The Hornets had gone 28-42 in two seasons under Patrick
and the program has never made an NCAA tournament since moving up to Division I in 1991-92
The Hornets have posted a winning record only twice since then
going 16-14 in 2019-20 and 21-12 in 2014-15
"I have a lot of confidence in myself and a lot of confidence in my staff," Bibby said
'I'm going to turn this thing around.' I'm not saying we're going to go 27-0 or whatever it is
But there's going to be changes that come with this
We're going to have guys that play hard and that play for each other
We're headed for that NCAA tournament bid."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report
-- Mike Bibby and Shaquille O'Neal are going to be mixing it up again
No more Sacramento Kings-Los Angeles Lakers rivalry or on-court trash talk
it's Bibby the college coach and O'Neal the student-athlete father
Good thing they get along great these days -- because Shaq's son, Shaqir, verbally committed to play for Bibby in the former Kings star's new position as head coach at Sacramento State
It probably wasn't good when we were playing against each other," Bibby said with a grin when formally introduced at the school Tuesday
"There was a lot of try to get a rivalry going
Don't be surprised if more NBA players' sons wind up in California's capital with one of the most beloved stars to come through the Sacramento franchise
Bibby's phone hasn't stopped ringing since he was hired last week to take over the program
He doesn't even have time anymore to take his daily naps
The 46-year-old Bibby is ready to lead the Hornets back into contention in the Big Sky Conference right away after they finished 7-25 last season
look at our new head coach," athletic director Mark Orr said
"Today's introduction of Coach Bibby marks a successful turn of events here at Sacramento State over the last couple years
Bibby retired in 2012 and has had various coaching jobs since
He won five state titles and coached 25 players who received college scholarships in six seasons as coach at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix
He also has been an assistant for the Puerto Rican National Team
summer league teams for Cleveland and Memphis
he's a Sacramento legend," Sacramento State President Dr
"The city embraced him during his NBA years and he's returning that love by choosing to lead our program
the pride and determination and he's ready to build something that's special right here at Sacramento State
With Coach Bibby at the helm we are raising the bar."
Orr said he received inquiries about the job from NBA-level coaches on down
"and I kept coming back to one of the greatest basketball minds that this city has ever seen
He loves this community and wants to be here."
And Bibby wants to leave a lasting mark and build something special here
He knows the student-athletes will look to him as an example of someone who has been at the top
I don't want to let the city down and I'm going to do my hardest not to," Bibby said
"These kids are trying to get to where I've been
and why not get it from someone that's been there before?"
Bibby won an NCAA championship as a player at Arizona in 1997 and then starred in the NBA for 14 seasons
with his most successful stint coming during seven seasons with the Kings
He helped Sacramento reach Game 7 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals before losing to O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers
"He's a legend, and I think the city needs somebody that's going to reflect it culturally," senior guard EJ Neal said
Bibby is ready to teach -- "Everything has to be precise
We do it hard or we do it again." And he plans to schedule top non-conference opponents -- "They'll overlook us."
He has no doubt the Hornets will win immediately
adding that "I have plans of taking this conference by storm."
"Having a coach come in here to teach us and to try and push us and hold us accountable so we can get better and get to that position where he was I think is the biggest thing," senior forward Jalen Pitre said.
Even with all of that confidence and swag, Bibby was clearly a bit emotional and overcome by this full-circle moment.
"I'm lost for words right now, I'm nervous as you guys can tell," Bibby said. "I'm just ready, I've been ready for this for a long time."

The move indicated that the Kings would have some continuity on the bench heading into what could be a new era for the team
it seems like there won't be that much continuity in that category outside of Christie
On Saturday, it was reported that
while Christie will be back, multiple assistant coaches will not be retained
The list of coaches that will not be back includes lead assistant Jay Triano (the most decorated coach on last year's staff
a former 14-year NBA veteran who has been with the team since 2022
has survived the cuts and will remain with the team
One candidate to replace Triano as the lead assistant seems to be Mike Woodson
Woodson is one of the few guys out there with even more experience than Triano
He played in the NBA for over a decade (from 1980 to 1991) before becoming an NBA assistant coach in 1996
He stayed in the NBA for a quarter of a century
including head coaching stints with the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks
Woodson then left the NBA game to be the head coach at Indiana
He parted ways at the end of this season after four years with the Hoosiers
Sources say Mike Woodson is a leading candidate for the Kings’ top assistant spot under Doug Christie. He last coached in the NBA in 2021, and spent the past four years as the head coach at Indiana. https://t.co/CNrD3mHIj2
The Kings will also be without Luke Loucks
Loucks came to the Kings in 2022 after a half decade run with the Golden State Warriors
He did such a great job in Sacramento that he was able to leverage his experience into a head coaching gig at Florida State
Next season will be his first year as the leading man of the Division I university
Christie has also been with the Kings since 2022
he spent time as an assistant on this staff before his promotion
These changes will give him the chance to handpick his own guys
Let's see what he ends up doing with this freedom
