A fire that started on a patio quickly spread to a Saddle Brook home Sunday afternoon

When Officers Skordinsky and Reece arrived
they learned the flames had already spread to the structure — and that the homeowner’s dogs were still inside
The officers immediately ran to the front door to enter the home
"The quick and brave actions of these officers most likely saved the homeowner’s pets," Chief Zotollo said
"These officers continue to show their commitment and professionalism while serving the residence of Saddle Brook."

The owner of the 244-room Marriott Saddle Brook has unveiled the first phase of a $15 million renovation of the historic hotel
a familiar sight to motorists in northern New Jersey
Pyramid Global Hospitality on Tuesday said the property
a refurbished fitness center on the first floor has upgraded flooring and walls with newly installed equipment ranging from elliptical machines and exercise bikes to weight machines and free weights
Ownership has also redesigned the Marriott Saddle Brook’s indoor gathering spaces
which include six meeting rooms named after nearby counties in New Jersey and the 300-guest Grand Ballroom
That complements another 4,700 square feet of seasonal outdoor space for a variety of events
Hospitality interior design firm DiLeonardo spearheaded the updates, which follow last year’s sale of the highly visible property
“A new chapter for our historic hotel has begun as we proudly showcase a revitalized
function and meeting spaces,” said Alejandro Cardona
“Phase One of our renovation catapults us to the top of the consideration set for our corporate and business guests seeking the convenience of a modern hotel in the metropolitan area
with signature amenities that cater to this segment of traveler.”
the hotel dates to 1967 and is the second-oldest in the Marriott system
It’s now among the newest hospitality venues in North Jersey
reflecting both its significance within the Marriott brand and the property’s connection to the area
Upgrades also include a newly built atrium that streams in natural light
occupying the property’s former pool area and now providing a space for business lunches
“Adding to the excitement of our almost 12,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor function space
our newly built atrium will be a sought-after location
especially for events around the Saddle Brook region,” Cardona said
“This is a bright new oasis for the hundreds of social events and weddings and meetings we host each year.”
The operator added that the redesign draws inspiration from the building’s distinctive architecture
which has a robust three-dimensional massing
Elements of the newly designed public spaces and guest rooms integrate geometric elements and are visible in areas such as the guest room artwork
A second phase is slated to conclude early next year and will encompass a rebuild of the Marriott M Club
a new restaurant and a recreation of the Greatroom lobby space
That figures to create a sweeping new offering for a facility that serves destinations such as MetLife Stadium
Fairleigh Dickinson University and Great Falls Park

Joe Cutrona stepped down as Wood-Ridge football coach in November
aiming to spend more time with his children’s youth program in Saddle Brook
he did not foresee the Saddle Brook High School job becoming a possibility
Cutrona was approved as the Falcons’ new coach at his hometown Board of Education meeting
“This opportunity came about in March,” the 45-year-old said
and I felt it was a no-brainer that I could do both – coach high school
Though his commute is only about four miles shorter
anyone who has traveled Route 17 or Route 46 in the evening can empathize with the situation
“By the time I got done coaching practice at Wood-Ridge and got to the Saddle Brook rec program practice with my kids
“I could see how sad they were and [how much] they wanted me around.”
The Falcons may have reason to feel the same way. Their new coach gained a reputation for clever motivational tactics at Wood-Ridge and hinted at his move by posting a GIF of a falcon on his social media account Monday
The Blue Devils went 23-16-1 in Cutrona’s four seasons
qualifying for the state playoffs each time – after making just two postseason appearances in the previous 42 years
Saddle Brook won the NJIC Union Division championship in 2021 but has no NJSIAA playoff appearances since 2016
trying to do things to put Saddle Brook on the map,” Cutrona said
I think me coaching down on the rec level will help facilitate that
where the kids will see my face every day and want to stay here.”
That may seem a tad ironic coming from a 1998 Paramus Catholic graduate who played on a Parochial Group 3 championship team as a senior
Yet, as Cutrona has told NorthJersey.com in the past
he relates to the underdog mentality as a result of having played receiver and defensive back at 5-foot-7
I was the smallest kid on the field probably,” Cutrona said after leading Wood-Ridge to the 2022 NJIC Tournament final
its seventh consecutive losing record outside of Union Division play
Brighter days should be ahead – literally and figuratively – as the school is putting the finishing touches on a new turf field with lights and will play regular Friday night home games for the first time next season
Those are “the kind of things that kids want to see
that parents want to see in town,” Cutrona said
“I’m honored to join the Saddle Brook family
excited to get started with these student-athletes
and we’re going to build something special together.”

SADDLE RIVER — A female former officer has filed a complaint against the borough's Police Department
citing harassment and a "hostile work environment."
Former Police Officer Maryan Beskaly's complaint charges "wrongful termination" in April 2023
just short of completion of her probationary first year with the department
The complaint also alleges the Police Department was involved in gender and national origin discrimination
The Beskaly complaint was filed in state Superior Court on April 10 by attorney Gina Mendola
who filed a tort notice against the department in July 2023
The Golonek hearings are expected to resume April 22, after 32 hours of testimony.
'PMS-ing' commentsBeskaly joined the Saddle River department on May 2
after serving as a special law enforcement officer with the Cliffside Park and Westwood police departments
The complaint says Beskaly was advised by borough Police Chief Jason Cosgriff on Oct
that her performance was "up to standard" and that she would be released to standard patrol duties
Cosgriff "also expressed concern about her working under the supervision of certain officers." He did not name the officers
but other members of the department told her Cosgriff did not want her working on call with Golonek because Golonek "was not competent to supervise."
Unlike male officers who had completed their field service training
she was placed on call on a "limited basis."
Beskaly's complaint says she was the leader in the patrol division in the number of tickets issued for several months
and that at first this "motivated other officers to increase their own productivity." Because she continued to associate with Golonek
Beskaly was accused of "taking her anger and emotions out on the motoring public," even though the public filed no complaints against her
The complaint also says Beskaly was accused of "PMS-ing," short for having premenstrual syndrome mood swings
said he had "gotten a headache" from listening to her "screeching" on her body camera footage and advised her that "she should take testosterone to lower her voice and better perform as a police officer."
Because she was born in Egypt to parents who were U.S
and she was the only officer assigned to work the Ramadan Crescent Moon Lighting
told two Egyptian doctors being interviewed after they were victims of a burglary that "we hired one of you" for the department
Beskaly and Golonek filed similar complaints about back pain caused by being required to wear heavy taser equipment on their utility belts
while the chief and senior officers were allowed to use carrier vests to distribute the weight of their equipment more evenly
Beskaly was questioned by fellow officers for taking time off during her probationary year to deal with her back issues
Both women's complaints state that recharging equipment for their body cameras and tasers was provided and stored only in the men's locker room
Beskaly's complaint says she was surprised when she was summoned to Cosgriff's office in April 2023 and was informed of her termination because she was "not meeting performance standards." It was the first time she had been told of any deficiencies
said Beskaly previously filed a complaint against the department with another attorney
and "they tried to settle but were unable to do so."
Mayor Albert Kurpis and Borough Attorney Raymond Wiss did not immediately respond to requests for comment

The man accused of shooting a Bergen County pet store owner in the face with a crossbow has been ordered to remain in jail by a Passaic County judge
is accused of shooting the owner of Birds by Joe 2 on Route 46 in Saddle Brook on Feb
The case was transferred from Bergen County to Passaic County
where Bergen County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Anthony Talarico argued before state Superior Court Judge Scott Rumana on March 5 for Carey to stay in jail
Carey is charged with first-degree attempted murder
Talarico called Carey's actions "extraordinarily random and extraordinarily violent," saying Carey had been to the store multiple times
He said the surveillance footage in the store showed Carey walking in with a black bag
He then made contact with the victim and asked her a question
he shot her in the face with the crossbow from about 2 to 3 feet away
and Talarico said he believed she had a portion of a tonsil sliced
See it: Car falls into collapsed road in Rockleigh, forcing road closure
Talarico said Katarina was not given any warning and there was no particular reason for Carey to shoot her
He said Katarina removed the arrow from her throat and fought Carey off as he tried to shoot her again before she fled to a neighboring store
and he was arrested in Pine Beach in Ocean County the next day
Talarico said before that Carey went into Manhattan and fired his crossbow at the FBI building
Talarico said Carey "conducted himself in a whole violent and irrational manner" that almost killed one woman and could have injured others
He said the Hasbrouck Heights resident had previous run-ins with the criminal justice system
including sending a dead mouse to a Superior Court judge in retaliation for "an adverse ruling against him."
Talarico also argued Carey had few ties to the community
Kalsner Kershen said Carey has lived in the area his whole life
and that his mother and sister still live in the state
She acknowledged a restraining order filed by Carey's mother against him
She said the incident was downgraded to family court and that his mother was not in fear of him and didn't want to continue with the charges
Crime: Bergen County resident faces $500K lawsuit over sneaker business. Here's what it claims
Kalsner Kershen noted that her client had run-ins with the law in 1994 and 2000 that were disorderly persons offenses but said he was not known to be violent
"He has no prior violence convictions on his record at all," Kalsner Kershen said
"This is the first allegation of any form of violence against him."
Talarico said the history Carey has may not be long but is "assaultive in nature" and includes resisting arrest
and the restraining order against him from his mother is still active
Kalsner Kershen argued that there were conditions the court could place on Carey to guarantee his presence in court and for him to stay away from the victim
The judge said he has been aware of the case since its inception and that it was highly publicized in his daily newspaper
"Somebody who is apparently completely innocent of doing anything except for being a shop owner
and the next thing is taking a crossbow to the face."
He said the circumstances of the offense were "not favorable," nor was the fact that Carey was a frequent customer
Rumana said Carey's firing of the crossbow was "deeply concerning" because of its violent nature
He referred the case to the grand jury and told Carey he had seven days to appeal the decision

Carey was found and arrested in Pine Beach
and the Manchester Township Police Department
Carey was charged with weapons possession and obstructing the administration of law
He was taken to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office to await a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack
The pet shop Birds by Joe identified the victim as a woman who works there on Monday
and said that she "is recovering and investigations are underway."
Detectives are investigating the case as an attempted homicide
In an unusual twist, the pet shop is the same one that reported last month that someone stole a $7,000 grey parrot out of the same employee's hands. The parrot was returned days later after someone purchased the bird and then called in a tip, they said in an update
The Saddle Brook police said on Feb. 3 that they had issued an arrest warrant for a Paterson man in connect with the bird theft
The bird store said they will reopen on Friday
"Prayers for a full recovery for this very nice woman," said one commenter

Marriott unveiled a $15 million overhaul for its Saddle Brook hotel just off Route 80, after the property sold for nearly $17 million last year
The overhaul comes at a time when the international hotel chain
is shifting from new openings to renovations amid higher construction costs and complicated financing coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic
the newly-renovated Marriott Hotel — which first opened in 1967 — will feature 244 rooms

The property had been sold last year by CP Saddle Brook LLC
The Marriott Saddle Brook is operated by Pyramid Global Hospitality in a franchising agreement with Marriott
Pyramid Global was formed by the 2021 merger of three hotel and resort management companies

A second phase — slated for completion in early 2025 — will include a new restaurant called M Club
Marriott International CEO Tony Capuano told investors last month that — with higher construction costs and the complexities of financing — the company's focus has been on updating existing properties rather than new construction
“The availability of construction debt is still relatively constricted to where we were in a pre-pandemic situation,” he said during a recent earnings call
we're not back to where we were pre-pandemic in terms of shovels in the ground

will “remain a significant driver of growth” for Marriott
Other hotels are in similar situations. IHG — the British hospitality company that owns Holiday Inn, told trade publication Hotel Dive that nearly 40% of its openings in the first half of 2023 were conversions of existing properties

SADDLE RIVER — Pre-leasing registration has begun for the 112-unit affordable housing project on Choctaw Trail
The project, called Residences at Choctaw, is still under construction. Registration is being taken at the development's residencesatchoctaw.com website. Notice of the housing is also posted on the borough website, saddleriver.org
There has been a "tremendous amount of demand" for the housing
senior vice president of The Michaels Organization
"We've had 1,300 pre-applications submitted
we have to weed through who is income-eligible," Lubonski said
Lease signing is being held off until the project's permanent power source is confirmed
"We have to be very careful to make sure the buildings are going to be delivered and folks can actually move in within 120 days
or the income levels go stale," Lubonski said
Monthly rentals for the affordable units are listed at $662 to $1,391 for a one-bedroom unit
$795 to $1,690 for a two-bedroom and $918 to $1,928 for a three-bedroom
applicants must meet 60% median income limits for the area per household:
The project was approved in January 2022 by the borough with little opposition because of its isolated location off East Allendale Road
It is not the first affordable housing project for the borough
There is senior housing on Wolf Run off Boroline Road
the borough has not been quick to embrace the concept of affordable housing
with a median income of $226,750 and a median home price of $4.1 million on minimum 2-acre lots
on five sites in a February 2020 agreement with the Fair Share Housing Center
It took 19 hearings over 14 months to get its affordable housing plan approved in December 2021
the affordable housing hearing for neighboring Upper Saddle River took 45 minutes
the Choctaw site is the only one to be built
The borough was assigned an additional 249 affordable units when fourth-round assignments were made by the state Department of Community Affairs in July
A proposal to build 60 townhouse units, eight affordable, on the former 10-acre estate of actress Rosie O'Donnell on East Allendale Road was in hearings from November 2021 to April 2022. It was dismissed by the Planning Board in a dispute with developer Michael Kasparian over variance and waiver issues
The hearings were so contentious that Mayor Albert Kurpis declared at one that residents knew more about traffic patterns along East Allendale Road than the borough's own traffic expert
SADDLE RIVER — Do a police sergeant's changes to a patrol officer's incident report deserve a 90-day disciplinary suspension or a dismissal of charges
What do the six charges filed against the department's only female officer in March 2024 regarding an October 2023 incident have to do with the Notice of Tort Claim she filed against the borough and department in July 2023, accusing her employer of "harassment and wrongful mistreatment"?
Those questions are at the heart of rare public disciplinary hearings requested by 12-year member Sgt. Diana Golonek in response to charges filed against her by the 16-member department
Almost 13 hours of testimony was heard on Tuesday and Wednesday
as all involved did not testify at the two hearings
Saddle River police officers' testimonyFive officers testified during the first two days of hearings
the officers responded to questions with a uniform low-key — at times barely audible — manner about events leading up to the charges against Golonek
At issue is documentation of the department's response to what was relayed by a dispatcher as a "commitment call" for assistance on Oct
transporting a patient from Brighton Gardens
an assisted living/memory care facility on Boroline Road
Police Officer Gregory Bulick initially responded to the call
Golonek dispatched him to a building inspection while she temporarily assumed supervision of the call
Bulick returned to Brighton Gardens and the two went to headquarters to file a report
Bulick testified that on returning to the station he ran into Detective Michael Cooper
with whom he had recently completed field officer training
According to testimony by the two officers
they chatted briefly about the call and Cooper made casual mention that a "firearms check" was required for commitment transports and that Bulick "should" include one in his report
Golonek viewed Cooper's suggestion as an attempt to "countermand and second-guess" her instructions as Bulick's squad leader and Cooper's superior
Golonek confronted Cooper in the squad room in what several officers characterized as a profanity-laced yelling match in which Golonek was the "aggressor." Testimony shows Cooper either placed or threw down policy guidelines regarding firearms checks he had looked up to assist Bulick on a table and left the room
declaring that Golonek was creating a "hostile work environment."

Bulick said Golonek made some changes to his initial incident report with his knowledge and agreement
Cooper said he also took it upon himself to review Bulick's report to see if the firearms check was included
According to Internal Affairs supervisor Detective Sgt
their computer program indicated that Golonek stayed after shift for 1½ hours
"improperly" referring to her body camera footage to "add quotes attributed to the patient" when Bulick was not on the scene
Department attorney Raymond Wiss said Golonek in a "purposeful clandestine" move changed the call description from "commitment" to a less-serious "medical transport," and removed references to the firearms check
Cooper said he subsequently rechecked Bulick's report
noted that it looked "drastically different," and told Bulick
who said "he was not aware of the changes." Cooper reported the changes to then-Lt
Giannotti testified he checked the department's audit log to confirm date stamps on "substantial changes to the report" by Golonek after Bulick's shift ended
and reported the changes to Police Chief Jason Cosgriff
and he agreed Golonek's changes were "factual and correct." However
several officers testified that the changes were made without Bulick's knowledge and approval
failing to attribute her observations to herself
or issuing a separate supplemental report confined to her experiences on the call
Cosgriff referred the incident to Internal Affairs Sgt
who testified he considered the changes "grossly improper" and that they "did not follow regulations" and constituted an attempt to "falsify records" so serious that he referred the case to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office to see if it qualified for criminal prosecution
The Prosecutor's Office declined to become involved
Passaretti contended he "never found evidence of changes being made" by other supervising officers to subordinate officer reports without their knowledge
While Golonek and Cooper were investigated for the squad room incident
charges were filed against Golonek five months later on the report editing incident
incapacity and disobedience of rules and regulations
and five violations of department rules and regulations

The legal guardian of a former preschooler in a Saddle Brook district said their son was diagnosed with lead poisoning after being exposed to the highly toxic chemical while attending school
the child's guardian ad litem — appointed to represent the child's interests in court — said the township
the district's Board of Education and Washington School negligently exposed the child to lead-based paint
according to a lawsuit filed in state Superior Court in Bergen County
15 complaint also names Bergen County and its Department of Health Services and Office of Education
a preschool for children over the age of 3
during the 2021-22 school year when he underwent a blood test for lead
showed a blood lead level of 29 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dl)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that while no level of lead is safe in a child's blood, a blood lead reference value of 3.5 mcg/dl is considered elevated for children ages 1 to 5
has a known risk of causing serious health effects
The boy was tested several times in 2022 and continued testing with a blood lead level over 20 mcg/dl
He also tested twice with blood lead levels over 20 mcg/dl in 2023
but it was not clear if he was still attending the school
The suit says the pediatric range should be between 0 and 9 mcg/dl
with the child's levels considered "high" by the CDC
the district conducted a lead-based paint risk assessment of Washington School on April 6
that allegedly came back positive for lead
The school was put on notice in March 2023 of the family's intent to sue the district
Saddle Brook Schools Superintendent Toni Violetti
Board of Education President Mariana Ianneillo and Board Attorney Mark Wenczel did not respond to requests for comment or to verify whether the school underwent testing and what the results were
Media contacts for Bergen County did not respond to requests for comment
A search of Board of Education minutes over several years did not return any results for lead-paint testing
although water testing for lead was conducted and came back clear across the district's six schools
the district's schools have had several areas that tested over state guidelines for lead in water
What is lead poisoning, and are children more vulnerable?Lead is a naturally occurring metal used in plumbing, construction materials and car batteries. Lead-based paint was banned in 1978
although the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as many as 31 million single-family homes and multi-unit apartments still contain it
including 3.8 million homes where children under the age of 6 live
No safe level of lead in children's blood has been identified
and the amount of lead in blood that is considered to cause significant harm has been revised downward several times
In 2021, the CDC began using a blood lead reference value of 3.5 mcg/dl to identify children between ages 1 and 5 with blood levels that are higher than most children's levels. The prior value of 5 mcg/dl, established in 2012, was lowered based on data from a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Even low levels of lead in blood can mentally and physically harm young children and cause lifelong adverse health effects
slowed growth and irreversible damage to the brain
Exposure to lead is responsible for an annual loss of 765 million IQ points in children globally
and one in every three children worldwide — more than 600 million children — have lead poisoning
professor and chair of environmental health sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health
Navas-Acien's findings, along with those of colleagues at other medical schools, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month
"The global burden of disease from lead exposure is staggering," Navas-Acien said
Low-level poisoning in adults can lead to chronic kidney failure and hypertension
with lead accounting for 5.5 million deaths annually from cardiovascular disease
states that because of a failure to take actions to ensure that Washington School was in adequate
the child was "carelessly and with palpable unreasonableness" exposed to lead and will suffer mental and physical pain
Lead poisoning "has caused or will cause" the child permanent injuries to his body
In fiscal year 2022, 113 children out of 12,013 tested under the age of 6 in Bergen County had elevated blood lead levels, according to the latest data from the New Jersey Health Department
the levels were elevated if they were above 5 mcg/dl
three children had blood lead levels between 20 and 44 mcg/dl; four had levels between 15 and 19 mcg/dl; 23 were between 10 and 14 mcg/dl; and 83 had levels reading between 5 and 9 mcg/dl
EPA ruling imposes stricter lead paint standardsLast month, the Biden administration imposed strict rules on dust from lead-based paint in older homes and child care facilities
When lead paint deteriorates and peels and cracks
The new policies
announced by the Environmental Protection Agency on Oct
declare any amount of lead exposure to be harmful and limit the amount of lead-based paint dust in homes constructed before 1978 to levels low enough that they cannot be detected
The new rule, which takes effect early next year, follows an Oct. 8 ruling by the Biden administration requiring water utilities to identify and remove all lead pipes in homes within the next decade
