unprecedented state tournament run "It just proves that the hard-work and all the practice that these guys have put in it just goes to show it pays off," Vondette said GLADSTONE -- North Saginaw Township Little League was one strike away from a state championship with a one-run lead for the second consecutive year Brady Samson came through with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-5 win over Norway to bring home the 11-under state title Thursday at Howes Field in front of 150 fans “I was under a lot of pressure,” Samson said about the last at-bat After it got past him (the second baseman) Pitcher Justin Hughes battled the Norway batters for 5 2/3 innings before giving up the game-tying double to leadoff batter Bobby Kleiman “There was a lot of pressure,” Hughes said Hughes gave up nine hits and hit one batter “(Hughes) always throws strikes,” North manager Jay Schwellenbach said “I wish he could’ve ended the game with the last batter 0-and-2 The last at-bat he hit an 0-2 curve for a nice hit who was 3-for-4 with two doubles for North closed the door in the sixth with a strikeout last year wasn’t on my mind,” Jay Schwellenbach said I was thinking we can’t give up the lead.” 8 and 9 batters came through for North as they did all tournament Matt Bartels led off with a line-drive single on an 0-2 pitch North considered its options then let Ethan Fornwalt hit away and he came through with a bloop single to right field After a fielder’s choice and stolen base made it second and third Samson chopped his single between the first and second basemen It felt so good to bring back the state championship.” “Everyone was due and came to win,” Mason Schwellenbach said I just went out there and tried my hardest to get the guy out.” Schwellenbach led North with nine hits in the state tourney because you’ve gotta get it rolling,” Jay Schwellenbach said … I know he’d rather bat with runners on base “That hit he had with two strikes over the center fielder’s head was big.” That double in the third inning started a four-run rally for North to give it a 5-3 lead Zack Csongradi and Elijah Abenth knocked in runs in the inning In a tournament run where every player on the team got a chance to be a star Jordan Eisengruber came through with a running catch in left field and an RBI single to score Hunter Parasiliti -- both in the second inning Eisengruber was the last North player to collect a hit and an RBI in the state tourney The host District 10 champions had two runs in and runners on second and third with two out That’s when first baseman Scott Walker made a diving stop to his right sprinted to the base and dove to touch it with his glove ahead of the runner The first base umpire called him safe but asked for help from the home plate umpire The umpire said to the Norway fans along the fence “Jordan Eisengruber’s hit was big,” Jay Schwellenbach said Confidence played a big role in North’s state title Eisengruber was the only one of the 11 players who was not with the 10-under all-star team last year “because they’ve been playing together for so long North advanced to the state tournament with an unbeaten district championship run at Bay City Northwest North won four games in four days to start the 15-team That put North in the title game with two days off Norway won the losers bracket final earlier Thursday morning Left-fielder Dawson Bilski made a game-saving catch in the fifth inning with a diving catch on a line drive with the tying run on base Five different North pitchers recorded wins in the tourney: Walker in relief against South Portage Abenth in the winners bracket final over Norway then Schwellenbach in relief in the championship Abenth and Hughes each started two games and finished with a combined 25 strikeouts and seven walks in 18 2/3 innings led by Hughes with seven and Csongradi with six Schwellenbach had nine hits and Hughes had six North hit five home runs in the first three games three-run shot in the sixth inning for an 8-7 win over Byron Schwellenbach and Matthew Sulkanen each hit two home runs North had 42 hits for a .326 batting average in the state tourney Its opponents had 28 hits for a .237 average .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Heather Jordan | heather_jordan@mlive.com SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — Three people, including north side A community open house is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m — Saginaw Township’s Hopevale Church is entering the third chapter of its more than 50-year history The nondenominational church is raising a noticeable superstructure at 4873 Center “I think our history is finally going to be matched with a building that’s in a place that’s pretty prominent and I think that’s going to provide us with some neat opportunities to do ministry,” said the Rev The church’s roughly $8 million new building eclipses the current 38,000 square-foot church structure built in 1964 chairman of the church’s building committee and 37-year church member Hopevale’s new church is one of the county’s largest The building is the newest chapter in the church’s history He said previous chapters include the founding of the original Hopevale Church by a group of missionaries who were martyred in the Philippines during World War II and the church’s founding at McBrite School The church’s current building at 5360 Shattuck in Saginaw Township is for sale but Nall said Hopevale will use both spaces for administrative offices and youth activities until the older building is officially sold He said the two facilities have been dubbed “south campus” for the current church and “north campus” for the new structure The church has owned the site at the corner of Center and Tittabawassee in Saginaw Township since the late 1990s church leaders originally considered constructing a new building finances prevented the church from pursuing the project further He said considerable growth within last 10 years has caused Sunday church attendance to reach about 1,400 people The south campus’ limited parking forced the church to bus attendees from nearby parking lots Parking is nearly doubled at the new location Whereas the current location’s pew seating accommodates about 650 comfortably the new 5,762 square-foot worship auditorium can seat 1,050 people in padded chairs The new building includes rooms for children in every grade level with accommodations built in for children with disabilities easily partitioned spaces for adult and youth seminars a coffee station with adjacent seating area and a lobby with room to expand on the church’s 54-acre lot About $300,000 remained from the church’s first attempt to build a new structure and was combined with about $3 million in pledges by church’s members that was a clear indication the Lord was blessing this entire endeavor.” 14-year member of the church and finance coordinator for the project said the remaining $4.5 million was directed through the sale of bonds Garner said the biggest change in the church’s ministry is its revamped birth to fifth-grade children’s ministry He said typical Sunday school classes will combine with large group teaching and small group application courses on Sunday evening Hopevale Church will begin worship services at 9:15 and 11 a.m Find out more about Hopevale Church and its move at the proposed trail is a connector of the Iron Belle Trail MI -- They moved to the country for seclusion their township wants to put a public trail through their front yards "I've been here 27 years," said resident James Gross The Tittabawassee Township Board of Trustees unanimously approve a grant proposal last month for the 2.6-mile trail which would connect a portion of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail and the statewide Iron Belle Trail The proposed $665,800 trail connector between the existing Freeland and Kochville Township's trails would start at the Freeland SportsZone south on Hackett Road and finally east onto a utility trail the pavement trail would extend 6 foot off the roadway through the yards of seven family homes Residents don't have to OK the proposal because the property technically belongs to the county through right-of-ways Several Kochville Road residents interviewed said they weren't mailed a notice for either the planning meeting or the meeting where the board approved the proposal "I found out from a neighbor knocking on my door," said resident Kate Colpean "As soon as I found out I went to the next meeting." "A neighbor came into my yard one day and said they were going to run the trail across his property and now they're going to do it to mine," Gross said Colpean and some 40 other residents attended the March meeting in hopes of getting the township to rethink their plans "We all went and told them what we thought," he said "They're going to do it as they see fit "I thought we lived in a society where your voice mattered?" Tittabawassee Township Supervisor Rick Hayes contended residents were mailed notices and their concerns were considered "Were they allowed to speak?" Hayes asked If the current proposal to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is accepted the township $265,800 and the Great Lakes Bay Region Trail group $100,000 MLive left messages with Tittabawassee Township Manager Marc McGill The township initially planned two years ago to run the connector from the Freeland SportsZone to Kochville Township through utility trails the whole way The plans fell apart when a property owner declined to let the trail run through a portion of his land "They owned the land and didn't want it going through it," Hayes said "Most of the land is owned by Consumers Energy except for that one piece." The township then rerouted trail plans up Garfield and onto Kochville Road with the Kochville stretch narrower than the rest "That portion will be 6-foot wide because some of the residents along the route felt a narrower trail would be a better fit with the neighborhood character and less trees need to be removed," the proposal states The year after Tom Zemanek moved to his Kochville Road home in 1999 he planted rows of arborvitaes encircling most his property "I planted all this," Zemanek said "It's just my little piece of dirt "It's a big asset to my property and I'm proud of it." crews will tear out his greenery bordering the roadway Every tree and shrub uprooted for the trail construction comes with a promise the township will replant them "We all think it's our front yard but the road commission owns 33 feet from the center line," he said Hayes noted plantings in the right-of-way would be torn up anyhow Residents said the trail would compromise their privacy Most viewed the trail as a positive asset to the area said the location along the roadway doesn't highlight natural landscape but I just think it would be beautiful back in the nature of things," Zemanek said Colpean said she'll likely fence in her yard for privacy that's why I came out here," she said Gross said although he doesn't think the all-hours trail will bring in crooks and burglars it'll be cause to keep things locked up "If we wanted people closer to our house we would've bought in a damn subdivision," he said \n m_gallery = \"tittabawassee_township_residen\";\n m_gallery_id = \"eba31cbd6a2743\";\n the Sunny Side Gang during raids that netted 17 members of the notorious group MI -- After the number of homicides in Saginaw hit a 30-plus-year low in 1999 Police linked that spike in violence to the rise of two relatively new gangs: the Sunny Side Gang which claimed the city's northeast side and former Daniels Heights neighborhood as its territory the gang violence spread to the city's Old Town district where a quintuple shooting took the life of one man inside the Captain's Cove bar on North Niagara This fourth installment of a Saginaw gang crime timeline -- the result of combing through 30-plus years of Saginaw News articles -- shows that by mid-2006 and local agencies had put a big dent in the Sunny Side's efforts police had arrested so many members of the two gangs that they no longer could function The next four years went by without much discussion of gang violence but after the city experienced 30 homicides in 2012 an ongoing rivalry between the East Side Gang and a new North Side Gang came to the forefront detailing the increasing gang violence and then those two gangs' demise 2005 -- Gunfire erupts in the parking lot of Wise Guys bar after bar patrons begin after gunmen open fire on two Buena Vista homes within 15 minutes the previous day two of about 10 drive-by incidents in recent weeks are retaliation for the shootout at the Mapleview Apartments
