Athletes cross the finish line of the Ironman St
Members of the Southern Utah Triathlon Club pose for a group photo
Local triathlete and Ironman competitor Rich Bruin displays his many finisher medals
George has been a race that tested the limits of endurance athletes
offering breathtaking views and a punishing course through the red rock landscapes of Southern Utah
it has become a defining event in the triathlon world
unpredictable weather and unforgettable community spirit
athletes reflect on the legacy of this iconic event
George made its debut in 2010 as a full-distance (140.6-mile) race
quickly earning a reputation for its grueling elevation gains and extreme conditions
The transition to a half-distance (70.3-mile) event in 2013 allowed more athletes to experience the course’s difficulty while maintaining its status as a premier race
when brutal winds reaching 40 miles per hour made the swim nearly impossible
Officials were forced to pull many athletes from the water
leading to one of the highest DNF (Did Not Finish) rates in Ironman history
the race has continued to attract competitors eager to take on one of the sport’s toughest courses
spectators and local triathletes of the Southern Utah Triathlon Club have fostered a supportive atmosphere that has kept athletes returning year after year
One athlete who knows the race better than anyone is Rich Bruin
His journey encapsulates the heart of the race and the deep connection athletes have to it
and how has this race evolved for you over the years
and there’s something special about racing on familiar roads surrounded by stunning landscapes
and that challenge keeps me motivated year-round
their energy and dedication create an experience that’s second to none
The community aspect has also played a huge role: training and racing alongside friends makes a difference
exchanging high-fives and sharing the experience is what makes this race feel like home
Q: Can you share a particularly memorable moment from your years racing here
A fierce windstorm made an already tough race even harder
I remember reaching the top of the bike course near Veyo Pies
telling my friends I wasn’t sure I could handle another loop in those brutal winds
But with their encouragement and some refueling
Another unforgettable moment was in 2016 when I decided to run without socks
A volunteer at an aid station saw my struggle and offered me their own socks
That small act of kindness saved my race and reminded me that Ironman isn’t just about endurance; it’s about the community that lifts you up along the way
Bruin: This race will be all about savoring the experience
my main goal is to appreciate every moment: the start line buzz
the support from volunteers and the finish line celebration
Their encouragement and dedication have made this event what it is
When I cross that finish line for the last time
I want to reflect on the incredible journey – years of training
friendships forged and the unforgettable highs and lows
It won’t just be the end of a race; it will be the culmination of countless memories
This race has been a huge part of my life for over a decade
and while I understand that all things evolve
it’s hard to see something so special come to an end
the volunteers and the challenges have made it one of the best races in the Ironman series
I’ll always be proud to have been part of it from the very beginning
its legacy as one of the sport’s toughest and most beloved events remains undeniable
tackling steep climbs or drawing strength from the unwavering support of the community
athletes have left their mark on this course
While the race itself may be coming to an end
friendships and lessons learned will endure long after the final finisher crosses the line

GEORGE — A 29-year-old man is facing felony charges after allegedly picking up a teen girl who had been walking home and then trying to flee from police
Eugenio Fabian Hernando-Ramirez was charged on Friday in 5th District Court with child kidnapping
a first-degree felony; failing to stop at the command of police
a third-degree felony; and two counts of reckless endangerment
George police were called to the area of 750 East and 1000 South at about 9:30 p.m
Two young sisters had been walking home when one sibling reported "a white van with a frog on it approached her sister," a police booking affidavit states
The van then sped away from the area and the girl could no longer find her 13-year-old sister
"Due to the possibility of a child kidnapping
multiple officers began circulating the area in an attempt to locate the van," according to the affidavit
police spotted the van near 900 South and 400 East by officers on bike patrol
The officers attempted to stop the vehicle
Other officers in patrol cars saw the vehicle a short time later and pursued it as the driver continued to flee
running a red light at one point in an effort to get away
police blocked it in and conducted a felony stop
Hernando-Ramirez was taken into custody after getting out of the van

George • A premier southwestern Utah fossil quarry threatened with extinction by the planned construction of an electric power station will no longer go the way of the dinosaur
A week before the May 1 deadline for excavation of the fossil-rich
George city officials pulled the plug on the construction of the substation
thus extending a lifeline to the three-quarter-acre quarry regarded as one of the most important dinosaur track areas in North America
Instead, the city will build the substation on less fossil-laden land just south of the quarry, on municipal property across the street from St. George’s Dinosaur Discovery Site museum at 2180 E
“We owe the city massive praise for working with us and deciding to relocate the station to protect this fossil site,” said Andrew Milner
lead paleontologist and curator of the museum who is overseeing excavation efforts
Even though the excavation at the quarry ended April 30 as planned
scientists and volunteers will no longer have to forever abandon extracting fossils
they can rest up during the area’s withering summer heat and resume unearthing paleontological treasures at the quarry at a more leisurely pace in the fall
Milner said city officials opted for the new location after he met with Mayor Michele Randall and city staff to talk about the impressive finds they were unearthing and to ask for more time to excavate before construction on the station began
George spokesperson David Cordero said city officials were excited by the discoveries found at the quarry
“We wanted to be as supportive as we possibly could while also maintaining the location for the substation in that general area [near the original quarry site] to handle the loads,” he said
“We are thrilled to be able to work with them on this
Hurricane volunteer Alli Gholdston was one of many workers at the quarry who were ecstatic over the last-minute reprieve when they heard the news
“When we found out we would now have plenty of time to dig through this site
it gave us all such a sense of relief,” she said
“We could work a bit slower and be much more thorough.”
Gholdston is one of 750 volunteers from all across the country and as far away as Canada and Europe to work the quarry once news about the substation’s original location surfaced and the headlong rush to excavate the site began in March
is many of the fossils found at the quarry date back 200 million years to the start of the Jurassic period and the end of the Triassic period
the latter of which featured a mass extinction that killed 75% of life on Earth and led to dinosaurs becoming the planet’s dominant species
workers have excavated and inventoried 1,055 specimens since the excavation began
Perhaps more important than the quantity is the quality of what has been found
“We have found four dinosaur bones so far,” Milner said
“We now think we have potentially found three different species of sharks that are new to science
We won’t know until we start prepping the specimens.”
a dietary staple of dinosaurs that roamed and swam the area
Milner said the prevalence of fish bones and fossils at the bone-dry quarry is because it was once situated on the shores of ancient Lake Whitmore
a massive prehistoric expanse of water that covered everything between St
“We also know we have four new kinds of meat-eating dinosaurs at the site – two small ones and two large ones,” he said. “The large ones were between 15 and 20 feet long and would have produced the big three-toed Eubrontes tracks that we are finding."
Gholdston is especially enamored with the partial fish jaws she dug up. Topping Cedar City volunteer Nathan Martin’s list is the three-inch dinosaur tooth he extracted last Friday. For his part, Milner is enthused about all the new volunteers and fresh faces.
“We have amassed quite a team of volunteers who live in the area and now have some serious skills that can help us with this site, the prep lab and to do field work elsewhere,” he said.
(Mark Eddington | The Salt Lake Tribune) Paleontologist Andrew Milner shows off a dinosaur tooth found embedded in a rock at a St. George dinosaur site, Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Volunteers are racing to extract fossils at the site before construction begins on a power substation.
Between now and when work resumes on the quarry in September, Milner will oversee efforts to sort through all the material he and others have collected.
As for construction on the substation that was originally slated for May, Codero, the city spokesman, said that won’t commence in its new location until later this year.
St. George owns roughly 20 acres in the area, which includes the quarry, the new substation location and the museum. The nonprofit DinosaurAH!torium Foundation operates the facility, which attracts 50,000 visitors a year.

Utah (KUTV) — A 29-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly picked up a 13-year-old girl in his van as she was walking home with her sister in St
George police said a young girl contacted them shortly before 9:30 p.m
She reported that she had been walking home with her sister when a white van with a distinct frog symbol approached her sibling near 747 E
The caller said she was unable to find her sister
Police searched the surrounding area for the van
an officer spotted the vehicle near 900 South and 400 East and attempted a traffic stop
which ended when the van reached a dead end at Crosby Family Confluence Park on Convention Center Drive
identified by international identification cards as Eugenio Fabian Hernando Ramirez
stepped out of the van as the 13-year-old girl exited the front passenger side
Both Hernando Ramirez and the girl declined to speak with law enforcement
The girl's mother later told police that her daughter "has an extensive history of sexual conduct and interactions with older-aged (men)." A records check confirmed the girl had previously been involved with a 17-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man
Hernando Ramirez was booked into the Washington County Jail on third-degree felony failure to stop at the command of police as well as Class A misdemeanors reckless endangerment and Class B misdemeanors reckless driving
Additional charges are pending as authorities wait to obtain court-authorized search warrants for the electronic devices of both Hernando Ramirez and the girl
human geography — how people got where they are — has always been a fascinating topic for me
one that makes travel even more interesting
why Chicago became the dynamic city it did when you consider that every Midwestern farmer sent his yearly crop off to the city on Lake Michigan
and those goods were then taken by barge or ship through the Great Lakes for international consumption
at least for the majority of American cities
when highways or waterways dictated where the masses settled in

Once known primarily as a sleepy Mormon outpost
George has become a vibrant destination for golfers and those who love to sightsee
We spent 48 hours in the up-and-coming locale
There's a reason the resort has pushed to house tournaments for both tours: The amenities are top-notch and the views are otherworldly. We met with Patrick Manning

First responders investigate the scene of the crash in St
George Police vehicle is parked at the crash scene in St
A 9-year-old boy sustained head injuries after he was in a collision with another child Sunday afternoon
First responders were dispatched to the scene near the intersection of 2780 East and Flycatcher Drive
where the two children reportedly collided with each other while one was driving a golf cart and the other was on a motorized scooter
Bryan Hendrix said the call came in at approximately 3 p.m
It appeared that a 12-year-old girl was driving the golf cart north on 2780 East
Hendrix said it appears the golf cart ran over the boy
but Hendrix said he may soon be moved to a children’s hospital in Las Vegas
"Family went with the 9-year-old to the hospital
and they were pretty — obviously pretty distraught," Hendrix said
He said that while golf carts don't require insurance
operators must be at least 16 years old when on a public roadway
No citations were issued to either family and Hendrix said that no charges would be filed until police had reconstructed the scene and investigated the crash
recklessness — nothing like that," he said
Other agencies later assisted with the reconstruction of the crash scene

GEORGE — You could say this story began about 200 million years ago
That's when scientists and volunteers rushed to excavate a fossil-rich quarry at the Dinosaur Discovery Site in St
George before it was scheduled to be turned into a power substation
"The discoveries have been crazy," said Jim Kirkland
which is known as one of the most significant of its kind in North America
has yielded impressive finds in just a couple of months
Probably 20 to 30 dinosaur teeth of various sorts," Kirkland said
Thousands of volunteers from across the country and even around the world came to dig
a new electric substation was planned for the quarry location
City officials gave scientists until the end of April to excavate what they could before construction began
"It's a major site anywhere in the world
"Just because it tells the story of the recovery from this global mass extinction."
and we determined if we move the site just a little bit
then it would be able to allow them to continue to be able to work on this site," said David Cordero
The decision came after meetings between city officials and museum leaders who shared the scientific value of what was being uncovered
City leaders agreed to move the substation's location just enough to spare the fossil site
"I think everyone is walking away from this very happy," Cordero said
While excavation at the quarry has paused for the summer
paleontologists plan to return in the fall when temperatures cool to continue digging and analyzing
"Utah is the history of life," Kirkland said
these dinosaurs at this site won't become extinct again

A rear-end collision inside a drive-thru car wash in St
George left two vehicles heavily damaged Thursday
The incident reportedly happened shortly before noon at the Tagg-N-Go Car Wash at 1506 S
primarily involving a white BMW SUV and a gray Tesla sedan
George Police Officer Ryan Nielsen said it appears that the customer in the BMW
instead of placing the car into neutral in order to be taken through the wash
mistakenly hit the accelerator while the vehicle was still in drive
The BMW then sped through the car wash before crashing into the rear end of the Tesla
The impact sent the Tesla into the rear of a third vehicle
a Subaru that was about to exit the car wash
Although that secondary collision caused significant front-end damage to the Tesla
the Subaru reportedly sustained only minor damage and remained drivable
according to police and witnesses at the scene
employees who heard the crash said they immediately shut off the machinery and called 911
The incident occurred on private property and no citations were issued

As Bandon Dunes Resort wraps up its 25th year in golf
I am reminded of the magic of what many consider to be the most iconic golf resort in America
Chances are you’ve heard of the golf holy land
due to its seven courses on the Southern half of the Oregon coast
features five of the top 15 courses in America
one-third of the top 15 golf courses in America reside within a few par-5s of each other
Where do the sixth and seventh courses rank
They are stunning 13-hole and 19-hole (not a misprint) par-3 layouts or “short courses” known as the Preserve and Shorty’s
Either course can be a warm-up or a cool-down or offer several days of great golf
They possess several of the most amazing par-3s you’ll ever play
After my 14th visit and spending over a month of my life on the property
I contemplated the same thing I wondered after my first trip
Is part of what makes Bandon Dunes so special that you have to put in some work to get there
1-ranked Pebble Beach and many of America’s great courses
but not so remote that you are exhausted by the time you get there
You have several airport choices like Portland (a bit of a drive)
Eugene (less of a drive) or the seasonal flight schedule to North Bend
count on passing several minivans packed with clubs carrying grown men clearly on the same journey down U.S
Don’t expect a giant LED billboard or lighted signage letting you know you have arrived in the magic kingdom of golf
You would surely miss the understated entrance if you hadn’t already been counting the minutes and miles to your arrival
You’ll spend the first half a mile wondering if you missed the turn until you arrive at an unmanned gate confirming you are not lost
You spend the final half mile winding up to the main lodge and a clubhouse that
feels familiar and exactly what you’d hoped for — perfection
Accommodations fit for a king who loves golf
I don’t quite remember what I expected the first time I checked in at the resort
picture a summer camp layout surrounding the main lodge
cabins and an Inn filled with high-quality beds
Resort lodging continues to be one of the biggest challenges for those booking due to the demand and inventory
While some rooms are beginning to show their age in furniture
they have started to solve that problem with remodels and the addition of the Round Lake lodge
Round Lake continues the theme of quality and comfort
What must have felt like uncertainty back in the late 90s now feels like a reality that was never in question
The resort shares the name of the property's first links-style 18-hole track
a par-3 that looks like something out of every golf magazine you have ever held
Yet when you stand on the tee and pull your phone out to take a picture
you will look down at the snapshot and be disappointed that it didn’t capture the mastery of one of golf’s great shots
I can still hear my caddie breathe life into the story of the 12th hole’s inception
Picture the creepy old sailor at the end of the dock telling the story of the monster in the sea
Only this version depicts how McLay Kidd was assigned to design a hole to win the architect job for Kieser’s first course
“The Audition Hole,” as it has been referred to
tells of the assignment that … I’m not sure what I love more; the first time I heard the story or that every caddie since has told me the same story when I stood on the tee box
I never stop the caddie to tell them I have heard it all before
it is the ultimate reminder of what makes Bandon so special
It was a gamble that was born from the love of golf
If you ever get to reach for an 8 iron on the 12th hole
you will know what I mean when I say there is something special about the par-3 in front of you
the Pacific Ocean in the background makes it easy on the eyes
but the true lover of the game will see how well the hole can stand up against the greatest golfer and how one small error can be punished
There are certainly more scenic par-3s in the world
this hole certainly plays the cool guy that doesn’t look like he is trying
In an age where convenience and comfort sit in the front seat in our lives
Bandon requires golfers to enjoy golf in its purest form — walking
It’s funny when you tell people you walk and they quickly appreciate and understand that walking a course instead of driving from shot to shot is the best way to play
If you are playing Bandon for the first time
and those guides come in the form of a caddie
so I do suggest a call to the caddie shack (yes
not just a Bill Murray movie) and making a request based on your skill and attitude
but like to keep the mood light and fun and I encourage joking
I always ask for someone who has been there for more than two to three years and is skilled at reading the greens
It’s hard not to rattle off your love for Bandon to any unsuspecting golfer who asks
sharing pictures and rehearsing a few of your caddie’s best stories
Your caddie is an important ingredient to a great Bandon experience
this is a must; if you have had plenty of caddies
I suggest a rickshaw (think three-wheeled push cart like you’ve seen everywhere else)
I always lean caddie because it allows one to take in the entire property and fully enjoy the experience
Insider’s Tip: Most caddies prefer to carry two bags
but most prefer to “two-bag it.” You can also get a forecaddie who assists on shot selection
I should point out that I think the greens at Bandon’s newest course
are difficult for even the most experienced caddies to read
as the greens are still new and in the early stages of the hard-to-stop transition to poa annua
this makes me love the greens at Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes even more
You get a chance to see into the future of what the greens at the newer courses at Bandon will look like from their near-perfect state at Bandon and Pacific
there are many articles out there about poa vs other grass greens and most golfers can still recall Tiger Woods’ complaints about the poa at Pebble years ago
but I believe a few holes at Bandon or Pacific or Trails will leave you taking back all of the bad comments about poa
Bandon Dunes is the first and frankly my favorite of the five 18-hole layouts
There is something deeply authentic about McLay Kidd’s design
You can sense his love for the game and his desire to build something special
you leave Bandon admiring how well the hole layouts blend land
and you appreciate a younger course designer’s ambition and eagerness not to necessarily prove he belongs but to be worthy of the selection
1 is only a few yards from the pro shop and compared to many of the standard American tee boxes
it is flat and hard to discern from the fairway if not for the subtle tee markers
you will at times have a small gallery of those waiting for their chance to start their round
the tee shot could be topped or pured and you can still make par
your first shot depending on prevailing wind
McLay Kidd understands you want to get off to a good start
you’ll face a dogleg right uphill short iron
The routing takes you uphill again with an elevated par-3 green
which I believe is one of the highest points on the course
you work your way back toward the ocean with a solid par-5 that inches you closer to your first glimpse of the ocean
with the par-4 fourth hole that gives you the first chance to see how magical the boundaries of the course really are
you flirt with ocean views mixed with dunes until you arrive at the par-5 9th hole
wondering how you are already halfway home
Insider’s tip: Grab a sleeve of Protein Balls at the turn
You’ll thank me and enjoy the packaging meant to mimic a sleeve of actual golf balls
Hole 10 allows for you to swing about any club in your bag
the closer or friendlier the angle will be
You’ll want it as I find this green structure to be challenging to visualize a shot into
There are many ways to play the tee shot and approach
you find yourself at the “Audition Hole” 12th
put the sunglasses on and enjoy every minute of the final seven holes as everything starts to happen fast now
you are given a fair shot at a birdie to get some momentum
you jog back across the terrain to Bandon’s final par-3
where anything on the green will leave you grateful
this is the same hole that during the 2020 U.S
two of the best nonprofessional golfers slugged it out
including a triple-bogey-6 from the eventual winner
Hole 16 is visually one of the most stunning on the property
The hole is drivable (wind allowing) or you can play it safe and still have a chance to stick something close
sand and gorse all remind you not to go right
But the green you do see in front of you after a small optical illusion of a valley is peppered with small bunkers that
can turn a near-perfect shot into a test of your sand game
this green can feel as if it sits on the edge of the world
you will most certainly take your phone out a few times on this breathtaking hole
I would bet that at least 90% of groups take a picture on hole 16’s tee box
You have reached the penultimate of your Bandon Dunes round and you are left with two holes to take inasmuch as you can until the next round
but fair par-4 where I am generally always happy with a par
A small valley to your right separates you from the Preserve’s 13 par-3 holes
You are headed directly back to the Bandon lodge
but not before you are given one more chance to make birdie and dream of what could have been
The 18th hole at Bandon Dunes lands softly instead of bringing your round to an abrupt halt
you don’t want to drop out of the sky on such a great round of golf
it feels like McKay Kidd wants you to enjoy your round
wind will come from your left (north) or right (south) and not directly into your face on the final drive
Land it in front of the wall of fairway bunkers and you are left with a chance to get home in two
but even the green structure is inviting for the majority of short or long approaches
with only a green side bunker left to make you think twice
As you place the flagstick back in the hole
shake hands and walk off the 18th green at Bandon Dunes
your short walk back to the clubhouse will no doubt leave you instantly nostalgic
Regardless of whether this was a bucket list or a new annual golf destination
I am confident you will leave the Bandon Dunes Resort dreaming of another chance to enjoy one of golf’s most complete

Iron County is gearing up for the United States' 250th birthday
with a series of events scheduled to begin this year
On April 23, the Cedar City Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting America250 and Utah250
creating a local committee to make "the July 4th celebrations in 2026 even bigger and better than the ones before," according to the City Council packet
The committee will plan these celebrations in honor of the country's semiquincentennial
250 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed
"This is a national effort that is coming out of the federal government
and then it's been filtered down to the state governments," Phillips told the council on April 16
"And we want to participate as an America250 community
what that means is that we will be doing a number of activities throughout the year
executive director of the Visit Cedar City-Brian Head Tourism Bureau
said America250 offers a "great opportunity to celebrate."
even though I was pretty small," she told St
And I think this is a great opportunity to unify our county
and celebrate why we are the United States of America."
George News that he's "very humbled that our community and our city leaders have chosen to participate in this."
and I'm glad our nation is celebrating it," he said
"For all of our struggles and all of the issues with our American government
it is still the flagship of democracy that the world turns to say
How can we emulate what the American people do?' Do we have problems and issues
and it's written right in the preamble of our Constitution
'In order to form a more perfect union.' Because we will never be there
But if we are constantly working to form a more perfect union
And I'm hoping that these activities and these experiences that we'll put forth in our county will help us all realize and all work towards forming a more perfect union so we have it for our children
our grandchildren and all the future generations to come."
There are currently 22 members on the committee
with Phillips and Twitchell serving as co-chairs
Other organizations represented include Southern Utah University
Frontier Homestead State Park and the Cedar City Interfaith Alliance
"We've tried to really cover a cross-section of the community to make sure that we are coordinating and trying to match activities that would meet an entire city," Phillips said
Twitchell said local governments throughout the county will participate
with Parowan Mayor Mollie Halterman and Brian Head Town Manager Bret Howser attending the committee's first meeting
And Iron County is expected to vote on its own resolution in the next few weeks
Phillips said Kanarraville and Enoch have also joined the committee
To qualify for funding through the Utah Department of Cultural and Community Engagement
Phillips said the City Council needed to pass a resolution in support of America250 and approve Cedar's committee
Phillips said he plans to request $10,000 for the upcoming budget and that the city could obtain $10,000 from the state
as well as $ 10,000 to $15,000 from Iron County
"And then we might use some fundraising," he said
We don't know all the activities we're going to be doing yet
and I won't be here next time it comes around
starting July of this year through July of next year."
George News that the committee hopes to plan at least two projects per month during that period
Although the work is still in its preliminary stages
These include encouraging residents to walk 250 miles throughout the year
flying "an enormous flag" over Cedar Canyon
expanding Brian Head's Independence Day celebration
putting on a production of "1776," recognizing 250 outstanding locals
hosting an America-themed spelling bee and planning a July Fourth Cedar City Community Band concert
Phillips said the committee has considered recreating Paul Revere's ride between Parowan and Kanarraville
painting 13 sheep during the annual Sheep Parade in honor of the original 13 colonies and planting 250 trees in Cedar City
"(Planting trees) is part of our personal city initiative
because these things will last generations and be here for years," he said
such as the Southern Utah Museum of Art's planned exhibition on Native American history
Individuals who want to join the committee, volunteer or have event ideas should contact Twitchell or Phillips
"We're trying to put this master calendar together," Twitchell said
"We're encouraging existing events to figure out a way to incorporate it into this whole theme of America250
… This is definitely about community and education and celebration

This engine responded to a 2-vehicle collision on SR59
“We got dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident shortly after 5 p.m.,” Hurricane Valley Fire Department Battalion Chief Tyler Ames told St

but all the occupants were safely out of the vehicles.”
Ames added that three of the occupants from the two vehicles were transported to the hospital with “a variety of minor injuries
Some of the brush on the side of the highway near the collision caught fire

One is a burned out shell and the other is missing its engine block
which Ames said was found on the other side of the road
“One had caught fire and was totaled,” Ames said
“There was significant damage to the other one.”
Such severe damage indicates a high impact collision

Three people were arrested Saturday after repeatedly stealing merchandise from a big-box retailer in St
were arrested Saturday after police received a call shortly after 7:30 p.m
about an attempted theft at Target on River Road in St
Store employees told police that Malachowski and Munoz were found inside the store with a shopping cart full of items they were “actively concealing," according to a probable cause statement filed in support of the arrests
Store employees reportedly said the pair was then seen leaving the store with more than $800 in merchandise
Upon reviewing the store's security footage
police say Munoz and Malachowski could be seen shopping separately at the store
then meeting up to conceal the items inside a bookbag
The pair is suspected of being involved in five prior incidents of theft at Target
which were not previously reported to police
Staff said the pair have been spotted in the store “multiple times
following the same pattern to commit retail thefts
Malachowski is suspected of stealing over $1,100 in merchandise from the store
he is accused of using a box cutter to open five boxes of collectible trading cards that could not be resold once they were opened
which left the store with a loss of more than $140
In addition to the items she reportedly concealed during Saturday's incident
Munoz was allegedly captured on the store’s security footage taking more than $105 in merchandise during a previous incident
who was found to have an active warrant for his arrest issued out of Washington County
several of which were recovered during the arrest
adding that Munoz said she had taken only necessary items and that she did not make enough money to survive
Neither Malachowski nor Munoz had any form of payment on them at the time of the arrest
Downey was determined to be an accomplice and is accused of taking more than $100 in merchandise from the retailer
He reportedly told officers he entered the store “knowing he was going to take merchandise" without paying for the items
then said he changed his mind and decided to put the property back
Security footage provided by the store did not support Downey’s claims; instead
it reportedly showed the suspect concealing items without paying for the merchandise
Investigators determined that all three suspects arrived at the store “with the sole purpose of stealing merchandise" and had traveled to St
since all three had reportedly stolen from the same retailer previously
Downey is suspected to have driven Munoz and Malachowski to Utah from Nevada
and security footage showed the trio together in the store
officers reportedly found store property during a search of Downey’s vehicle
All three suspects were transported to Purgatory Correctional Facility and booked into jail
Malachowski and Munoz were each charged with two third-degree felonies
Downey was booked into jail on misdemeanor counts of the same charges
the Washington County Attorney’s Office filed the cases
and the charges were enhanced against all three defendants
Malachowski faces a second-degree felony of pattern of unlawful activity
and a misdemeanor of property damage for allegedly cutting open the trading card packages
Munoz was charged with one second-degree felony count of pattern of unlawful activity and a misdemeanor theft charge

A no-bail warrant was issued the following day by Judge Barbara J
Brown at North County Justice Court in Colorado City
and the defendant was charged with second-degree murder
The warrant was sent to the Washington County Attorney's Office
and a fugitive complaint was filed stating
"The State of Arizona has ordered that the defendant is not eligible for release on bond."

43-year-old Kay Billie Sorrels appeared at 5th District Court in St
Sorrels was sentenced on a second-degree felony charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance that was reduced to a third-degree felony
when he was sentenced on misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia charges
The couple was arrested during an early-morning traffic stop conducted on Dec. 27, 2024 in St
when an officer noticed a vehicle enter the roadway without stopping
the officer reportedly became suspicious of the woman's account of their travels that day
According to charging documents filed with the court
Sorrels told officers they were returning home to Washington City after a visit to northern Utah
which is the opposite direction,” the officer noted in the report
a police K-9 was dispatched to the scene and alerted to the possible presence of narcotics
The vehicle was searched and officers recovered suspected anabolic steroids
several syringes and a suitcase in the trunk of the car that contained a large number of THC cartridges
marijuana products and psilocybin mushrooms
Sorrel told officers she was from Washington State and was unaware that marijuana was illegal in Utah
but was unable to tell officers the names of the different steroids and said the substances were given to her by a doctor in Washington State
Officers became suspicious when the woman did not appear to be taking testosterone or mass body-building substances
Jones told officers they were traveling to Washington County from visiting family in northern Utah and were returning the vehicle to his niece
he said he didn't know there was that much marijuana in the vehicle and was unaware of the steroids
The suspects were arrested and booked into jail in Washington County on multiple charges
when she pleaded guilty to the reduced charge and the judge ordered her release
During the sentencing hearing held April 14
the prison sentence was suspended and Sorrel was sentenced to time served
She was then placed on three years’ probation with Adult Probation and Parole and ordered to pay a $53 fine
Jones was transported to Utah State Prison in Gunnison on Jan
Jones pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges and on March 5
a term the defendant elected to serve at the Gunnison facility
He is expected to be paroled on June 24, according to Utah Department of Corrections records
A weekend of truck festivities spiraled into chaos across Washington County
as unauthorized gatherings led to thousands of dollars in damages
Utah (KUTV) — A weekend of truck festivities spiraled into chaos across Washington County
Prior to and following the Southwest Truckfest
informal meetups spilled into commercial parking lots on the evenings of Friday April 11 and Saturday April 12
According to Washington City Police Officer
one of these meetups drew between 150 and 200 trucks into the Best Buy parking lot near Green Springs Drive on Friday evening
He said about 20 to 30 trucks were doing donuts and burnouts while a large crowd watched
This lasted for about 40 minutes until the police arrived
Klotz said that the damage done to the asphalt and a speed bump totaled $18,000
Between four and five people were arrested
Klotz noted that the event was driven by a small group of participants who were actually engaging in the reckless driving
But an unauthorized crowd can lead to a dangerous scenario for bystanders and law enforcement
"The worry is that the crowd can turn hostile quickly," Klotz said
He said there was one accident between a truck and another vehicle
police responded to a similar event at the Smith's parking lot in SunRiver
George Police Public Information Officer Tiffany Mitchell said about 100 trucks were involved
"They scared a lot of people," Mitchell said
It was really dangerous and irresponsible."
Officers issued citations and impounded several vehicles for reckless driving and driving without registration or insurance
She could not give an exact number of arrests
but said it included "a handful," estimating around five
Mitchell described the situation as chaotic
with trucks blocking fuel pumps and preventing other cars from leaving the parking lot
She said they dispatched as many offices as they could
"One of our sergeants said he was genuinely terrified for the safety of his officers and the public," she said
"That tells you how serious that was."
Mitchell said that they are still working to assess the total cost of the damage
She said that there is no further risk to the public and is hopeful that this doesn't happen again
IRONMAN 70.3 St George takes place for the final time on Saturday week
and we have an all-star triathlon cast fitting of the occasion
Both Sanders and Long are multi-time winners of the race – Lionle winning in 2016, 2018 and 2021 and Sam the two-time defending champion after scintillating displays in 2023 and 2024
On the women’s side, Paula Findlay adds further interest from a Canadian perspective as the defending champion, while 2022 IRONMAN World Champion Chelsea Sodaro makes her eagerly-awaited seasonal debut
It’s hard to look past bib numbers one
two and three on the men’s side with Long
‘The Big Unit’ is the two-time defending champion and is formidable over the 70.3 distance – having finished on the podium in four successive races – and he has won seven events since December 2022
For 2025, Long’s focus is on PTO’s T100 Triathlon World Tour, and it will be interesting to see how well he transitions back to the traditional middle-distance after being well beaten in Singapore
His storied friendship/rivalry with Sanders will certainly go under the microscope here
The Canadian is equally as adept over the 70.3 distance and has found a new lease of life in the off-season – taking a more relaxed approach to training and amending his nutrition
Sanders produced a sensational run to break the field at 70.3 Oceanside in early April and has won three consecutive starts over the 70.3 distance
The pair last faced off at Oceanside in 2024
with Sanders besting Long by just over a minute
Sam had defeated Lionel in eight consecutive races
The wildcard in the mix is Denmark’s Ditlev
who is competing in his first 70.3 race since the 2022 World Championship where he finished third
His last two seasons have been spent competing in the T100 and over the full distance
but his stunning victory at IRONMAN South Africa shows the kind of form he can bring to the table
Ditlev has finished ahead of Long in seven of their last nine meetings
and has beat Sanders in three of his last four starts
Although the race is being billed as a clash between the top three
other names to look out for include pro cycling star Cam Wurf
IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong runner-up Jake Birtwhistle of Australia
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast champion Ben Hamilton of New Zealand – who also finished second behind Long in St
George last year – and IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga winner Matt Hanson of the United States
There is also a defending champion on the women’s side as Canadian superstar Findlay looks to build on her IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside victory
The 35-year-old has six wins over the 70.3 distance in the past three years and is a contracted athlete on the T100 Triathlon World Tour in 2025 – likely to appear at San Francisco T100 at the end of the month
Lotte Wilms of the Netherlands has been given the number two bib
A three-time winner over the 70.3 distance – albeit her last victory coming back in 2022 – she’ll look to use her formidable swim to put pressure on the rest of the field
Findlay has beaten Wilms on all five occasions the pair have met on the start line
Sodaro makes her 2025 bow after withdrawing from IRONMAN Texas due to a virus
while IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside runner-up Jackie Hering and third-place finisher Danielle Lewis re-oppose Findlay in Utah
Lisa Becharas is perhaps a name to watch out for – she set a blistering bike split at Oceanside – while Brazil’s Vittoria Lopes is another interesting contender

A 29-year-old man is in jail following a felony stop near Convention Center Drive where he was allegedly found with a juvenile reported as a kidnap victim
was arrested less than an hour after the initial police report
officers were dispatched to East Riverside Drive in St
George near Heritage Elementary School regarding a possible kidnapping shortly before 9:30 p.m
officers spoke to a witness who said two sisters were walking home when a white van pulled up and then sped away at a high rate of speed
The juvenile told officers that once the van sped off
She described the van as having a frog on the side
“Due to the possibility of a child kidnapping
multiple officers began circulating the area in an attempt to locate the van,” the officer noted in the report
the van was spotted in the area of 900 South and 400 East by two bike patrol officers
who activated emergency lights to stop the vehicle as additional officers were rerouted
Another patrol officer spotted the van and attempted to stop
the driver continued east on Sunland Drive towards Riverside Drive
The van continued south along Convention Center Drive
crossing into oncoming traffic and running a red light
When the driver came to a dead end near Crosby Confluence Park
several patrol units surrounded the vehicle
was ordered out of the van during the felony stop
Police said a juvenile that left the van on the passenger’s side was the reporting party's sister
The driver was identified by an international identification card
The child’s mother also responded to the scene and confirmed the juvenile was under 14 years of age
She told officers she did not authorize her child to get into the van
Hernando-Ramirez was taken into custody and refused to speak with police before he was transported to Purgatory Correctional Facility
He was booked into jail facing one third-degree felony count of failing to stop or respond at command of police
along with reckless endangerment and reckless driving; each a misdemeanor
the case was filed by the Washington County Attorney’s Office and Hernando-Ramirez was formally charged with first-degree felony kidnapping
along with felony evading and two misdemeanor charges
George News reached out to Prosecutor Courtney Brinkerhoff-Sinagra
who said the kidnapping charge was added after they received further information indicating Hernando-Ramirez did not have permission from the child’s parents to transport the youth
Brinkerhoff-Sinagra said that each probable cause statement is reviewed to determine which charges are appropriate
then charges are either added or removed prior to filing
the state filed a motion for detention Friday
asking the court to deny bail in the case based on several factors
including the ongoing investigation into possible evidence of other child sexual offenses
Hernando-Ramirez is not a citizen of the United States
Prosecutor Lane Wood said in the motion for detention
Hernando-Ramirez is scheduled to make an initial appearance Friday at 5th District Court in St
where the judge will also rule on the motion for detention
with the Colorado City-Hildale Police Departmen

George will soon be home to the second location in Southern Utah of a highly-popular burger joint known for its simple menu and long car lines at the drive-through
In-N-Out Burger is set to be built off Interstate 15's Exit 2 in the growing commercial offerings by SunRiver. While the general location has been known for a while
the question of when construction begins has remained
George Councilwoman Natalie Larsen said Thursday night as the City Council unanimously passed a zoning amendment that clears the way for construction
The new In-N-Out Burger will be built on two-acres of land next to a Del Taco location also opening in that area
southeast of the existing Terrible’s gas station and west of the southbound ramp off Exit 2
There was some concern about the long lines of cars the restaurant tends to produce
as is often seen at In-N-Out Burger’s Washington City location
expressed by Councilwoman Dannielle Larkin
city staff said the restaurant's site plan showed space to provide room for a queue of 30-plus cars
“It looks like they’ve addressed parking very well,” Larsen said
the long line of cars at the Washington City location tend to move at a quick pace thanks to In-N-Out Burger’s simple menu
“I’m not concerned about that queue stacking,” Larsen said
Like other popular restaurants that can garner a long queue of cars at the drive-through
it was noted In-N-Out will have staff set up along the line to take orders during heavy traffic periods
the city received a single email from a SunRiver couple who are looking forward to In-N-Out Burger’s addition to the neighborhood
“We are super excited for In-N-Out to be our new neighbor and give our wholehearted support,” residents Lance and Deborah Parks wrote
it is estimated it will take eight months to construct the new restaurant once work begins
“We’re really exited to have the an In-N-Out Burger here,” David Cordero
“So far Washington City has had the only In-N-Out in the region.”
While the city is also looking forward to the tax revenue that having a popular restaurant within city limits will produce
its location also highlights the large amount of growth that has occurred on the city’s southern end over the last 10 years
but with all the (residential) rooftops that came in over time
commercial has been following,” Cordero said
In-N-Out Burger’s enduring popularity is said to stem from its commitment to simplicity
With a stripped-down menu focused on fresh
the family-owned chain has built a loyal following across the western United States
The restaurant is also known for its “not-so-secret menu,” along with adding small but memorable touches, such as Bible verses on packaging and distinctive crossed palm trees planted outside many locations
The extra menu is a collection of what originated as popular custom orders repeatedly made
This collection of unofficial offerings can be found on In-N-Out Burger’s website
The marketing move has kept the main menu’s in the restaurants proper
Santa Clara-Ivins Police Chief Jaron Studley explains the department's recent investigation to the City Council of Ivins
This stock image shows a Santa Clara-Ivins Police patrol vehicle
The Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department reportedly discovered that a St
George man possessed child pornography generated by artificial intelligence
resulting in the launch of a federal investigation
when officers responded to a “report of lewdness” at a Santa Clara residence
officers say they came to believe that 47-year-old Jared Marsh had recorded a nude person without their consent
Marsh was arrested and taken to the Purgatory Correctional Facility
investigators obtained a search warrant for Marsh’s cellphone
where they found “multiple altered photographs using artificial intelligence technology to depict juveniles in a nude state,” Tobler wrote
Investigators obtained a second search warrant for Marsh's St
they reportedly seized electronics containing “additional AI-generated images of juveniles in the nude.”
Marsh was released from custody while his initial charges were pending
Investigators obtained a second arrest warrant
reportedly listing 20 first-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor
Marsh was found at his residence and taken into custody without incident
He is currently incarcerated at the Purgatory Correctional Facility
Tobler said no further details of the case will be released at this time to “protect the integrity of the case and the privacy of any potential victims.”
Santa Clara-Ivins Police Chief Jaron Studley discussed the case at an Ivins City Council meeting earlier this month
“I don’t know that we want to be famous for this
but we’re bringing our first case in the region forward on the federal level for a case involving artificial intelligence and manipulation of images for that same type of material,” Studley said to the council
that’s kind of a scary thing for people to be watching us model
so I don’t know if I’m excited or if I’m nervous
but we’re waiting to see how that plays out.”
Tobler provided guidance on how citizens can recognize and respond to potential instances of child exploitation
“Child exploitation can occur both online and in person and is often difficult to detect,” he said

While two minors were previously caught and admitted to destruction at the house
Beynon said he has since seen people of all ages

A Cessna 340A (same airframe as a Cessna 335) takes off from an airport in this stock image
A private twin-engine plane did a belly-landing on the runway of the St
George Regional Airport last Friday in what may have been a case of “pilot error.” The incident is now under investigation by federal authorities
when the routine landing of a Cessna 335 went awry as the plane skidded across the runway after the pilot seemingly forgot to lower the landing gear
Two people — the pilot and the passenger — were in the plane, according to a preliminary notice from the Federal Aviation Administration
The occupants of the plane were reported as being unharmed after the plane “skidded to a halt,” Warren said
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the official cause of the incident
While the belly-landing caused a short delay in airport operations
it did not cause the cancellation or diversion of any flights or closure of the runway
There was also no damage to airport infrastructure
the twin-engine Cessna took off from the Provo Municipal Airport and is registered to the Surdex Corporation

Catholics from across the globe have found a home in the Diocese of Lansing
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint George
Mary Cathedral in Lansing depicts the baptism of St
and spread the faith across the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms
The builders of our cathedral understood that St
Ethelbert’s conversion marked the beginning of Catholicism in the English-speaking world
shaping a distinctly English expression of Catholic spirituality that continues to bring souls to Christ
the Virgin Mary appeared to Richeldis de Faverches
instructing her to build a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth
This Holy House memorialized Mary’s joy at the Annunciation
the root of man’s salvation,” a message re-echoed in the Angelus devotion
Our Lady promised her motherly help to all who devoutly seek her there
as popular as the Camino to Santiago de Compostela in Spain
Devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham reinforced England’s spiritual identity as the “Dowry of Mary,” a title dating back to at least the 14th century
It signifies England’s consecration to the Blessed Virgin
where a dowry was a gift of property provided by a husband for his wife’s security
It is in this sense that the title “Dowry of Mary” is understood; that England has been especially set apart for Our Lady
Catholic England was also called “the island of saints” and “the most devoted child of the See of Peter.” Throughout the medieval period and into the Reformation
the only English-born doctor of the Church
wrote extensively on Scripture and history
coining the terms “AD” and “BC” to mark dates relative to the birth of Christ
was martyred in 1170 for defending the Church’s liberty against secular interference
and other houses of religious life were found in nearly every town across the land
is associated with the beginnings of the Brown Scapular devotion
Writers like Dame Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe enriched the English mystical tradition by reflecting on divine mercy
The English Reformation brought immense suffering to Catholics
Thomas More were executed for upholding the sanctity of marriage and union with Rome after Henry VIII’s break with the Church
Their sacrifices solidified the unconquered resilience of English Catholics
who kept the faith alive through clandestine Masses and the practice of the faith in recusant families’ households
English Catholicism experienced rebirth following the Oxford Movement
This renewal found expression in literature
who reproposed the faith in works like Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man
Gerard Manley Hopkins expressed a sacramental vision of nature in his poetry
captured the struggles and triumphs of the faith in an increasingly secular world
Pope Benedict XVI once remarked: “The great tradition of English Catholic spirituality has much to offer the Church today
It is a spirituality of both contemplation and action
which expresses the deep interior life of the individual and the commitment to work for the common good

George is set to welcome its first namesake cultural festival this spring
the latest mile marker in the journey to build a community identity in the newly incorporated city
The festival—called the Saint George Culture Scene—will be held on the third Saturday of each month
Organizer Luke Lognion tells Daily Report that the goal of the festival is to build unity through shared experiences. Lognion also manages the Baton Rouge Arts Market in downtown Baton Rouge
“Many people have strong feelings about the creation of Louisiana’s newest city
it’s that art and music can bring people together unlike anything else,” Lognion says
and if there’s one thing I know from living in Spanish Town
it’s that neighbors’ differences fall away when there’s a block party.”
The Saint George Culture Scene will make its debut on May 17, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church on Perkins Road. The inaugural event will feature more than 30 artists, music from Zach McLain and Nouveau Soul and a curated lineup of food trucks
A portion of the festival’s proceeds will benefit St
Margaret’s and support the growth of the church’s community outreach programs
George did not have a hand in organizing the festival
Mayor Dustin Yates has expressed his support for the effort
George looks forward to another great event celebrating community and fostering a sense of unity as we move forward together,” a statement from Yates reads
food vendors and sponsors from across the Greater Baton Rouge area are welcome at the festival
On the sponsorship side, the festival has already secured its first media sponsor, Guaranty Media
and Lognion is actively seeking additional partners

Rob joined the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a young man while serving in the US Marines in Camp Pendleton
He then enlisted in God's army and served an honorable mission to Rome
He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Curriculum Development
He married and raised his 4 children in Wyoming
Texas and held many other church callings during his lifetime
and as an ordinance worker in the St George Temple and Baptistry
he met his eternal companion "Alley" while riding his rusty bike on the greenbelt of the Snake River literally across the street of the Idaho Falls Temple
They were married civilly twice; once in 2008 and again in 2012 when he was rebaptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Their marriage was sealed and solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple September 21
They chose this day to be their new anniversary as it was the beginning of their eternal life together in Tandemonium
which was quintessentially the symbol of their marriage
They could never answer the question of how long they were married because it required math
then their marriage sum is infinite and timeless
Along with the "package deal" of a 2nd marriage came the addition of Alley's daughters that he loved as his own; Cassandra Barany (William) of Seattle

never mind doing the dirty and unglamourous jobs
the kind who came early to set up and the last to sweep the floor when the event was over
He was a man's man in his skills and yet gentle and refined in his tastes
"occasionally pondering what made Shakespeare and Beethoven great"
He was the unofficial greeter of his Mayberry neighborhood and GV3 ward with his sourdough bread
He willingly fixed things for his widowed neighbors and put their garbage cans out weekly
We may never know all the secret service he performed for others because he was ever vigilant in looking for ways to help others and do good all his days
His life was simple but his joy made it abundant
His longest act of service was a full-time 23 month mission with Alley
They were called to the India Bengaluru Mission but ended up serving the most diverse mission ever; first in the Church Headquarters mission 5 months while waiting for their visa
2 months in the country Timor Leste and 4 months in The Indonesia Jakarta Mission
starting over and setting up a new household 5 times which he did masterfully and creatively
They made numerous lifelong friends everywhere they went
After returning home from that grand adventure
Rob cherished his time spent worshiping and serving daily and weekly in the House of the Lord in St George
He was scheduled for sealings and his evening shift just 2 hours before he was called home
But he died doing what he loved- digging in the dirt
