RELATED: Atlantic Beach City Commission approved new legislation to improve e-bike safety. These are the new rules
The boy had to be airlifted to a local trauma center as a result of the crash and remained in critical condition Tuesday morning
Some of the key rules and provisions approved by the city commission included e-bikes being restricted to a 10 mph speed limit and requiring all e-bikes to abide by “all state statues and regulations” like stop signs and bike laws.
Below is a more comprehensive list of rules approved by the city commission, according to the Atlantic Beach Police Department.
Once reviewed by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the ordinance will head to the St. Johns County Commission for discussion, which will be followed by public comment before any official vote is held.
The St. Johns County community remained in shock on Tuesday upon learning of the crash that left the boy critically injured.
“That made my stomach turn. I knew this was an inevitability with the number of [e-bikes] on our sidewalks,” said one News4JAX reader.
Julington Creek resident Pam Livermore said she wasn’t surprised to hear an accident involving e-bikes occurred in the area.
“I’m always very careful when turning in here because a little kid was coming down the road and I knew he wasn’t going to stop to look,” she said.
Another woman named Jamie said, “It doesn’t surprise me at all, especially with the way people drive around here.”

Our usual "sweet spot" on the calendar couldn't be sweeter most days

it should continue for another 10 or 12 days

You may have noticed, we're big on moons around here

which we'll get for some 14 days after the full moon
Because everything is ramping up as the moon starts to fill
and therefore the fish — including the quality catches — are downright giddy at all the baitfish being blown around throughout the water columns
As they say after such fishing proclamations
it wouldn't take much effort to find an angling contrarian who prefers waning to waxing and new to full
most of us wouldn't know a Gibbous if it jumped over our gunwale or onto our dock
and they’ll become a big target in the weeks ahead
anglers will keep concentrating on catches they can actually eat

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about the presence of Portuguese man o’war on St. Johns County beaches.
It’s vibrant blue and purple with tentacles and has a dangerous sting.
Because it has been sighted, a purple beach flag is currently up to warn about the presence of these dangerous sea creatures at the beach.
Beware of man o’ war and remember not to touch them!
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), man o’ war are called jellyfish but are actually siphonophores.
“A siphonophore is unusual in that it is comprised of a colony of specialized, genetically identical individuals called zooids — clones — with various forms and functions, all working together as one," NOAA says.
A man o’ war can sting you even days after it dies. So beware!
The Saint John’s community mourns the passing of alumnus Fr
Don was a dear friend to generations of students
We miss him and will continue to model his revered gifts of deep listening and genuine friendship,” said Dr
president of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University
OSB: “Early on in his monastic life and ministry
Don discovered a gift for relating to the spiritual challenges of our students and alums in their ordinary lives
faces and places of origin in a way that enabled him to be profoundly personal with thousands of friends and alums.”
During his eight decades of association with Saint John’s
Don literally became the essence of the place and the embodiment of our Benedictine values
He served as an undergraduate and seminary student, a faculty resident and theology professor, and as alumni chaplain. But most of all, Fr. Don served through his faith, guidance, gratitude and inspiration, both in his personal interactions at Saint John’s as well as the Daily Reflections he provided to thousands of readers around the world (www.saintjohnsabbey.org/reflection)
Don will be remembered for how steady and gracefully he journeyed with those he encountered,” Bruess said
“He was unmatched in his ability to remember names and hometowns
but more importantly he delighted in knowing each person’s story and life passions.”

Johns County is planning to build a croquet lawn at a 2.3-acre park off U.S
The county said that could change based on contracting costs
This project will feature four croquet fields
these fields will stretch a little over the length of a football field
as indicated by a map provided by the county
Funding for the project will come from impact fees
which are one-time charges levied on new construction
These fees are designed to help cover the costs of capital projects necessitated by development
ensuring that new growth contributes to infrastructure improvements like roads
It’s important to note that the funds collected from these fees cannot be used to operate
the project aims to enhance Rock Springs Farms Park on Sunstone Court by adding a shade structure
Donna Tucker and her husband Forrest are split on whether the idea of a croquet lawn is a good one
though their marriage certainly doesn’t ride on the decision
“We need to make the maximum use possible out of our county parks
and I’m not certain a croquet field that serves
a pretty narrow interest is the best use of that park,” Forrest said
Noreen and John Rice feel like there is an interest; they are actually borrowing their idea for the park from the Sarasota County Croquet Club
and believe it fits the interests of the county
and we want to build the future of the croquet program with the youth who are in the area as well,” John said
the county invited residents to share their thoughts on the project during a public meeting at the Southeast Branch Library
Attendees had the opportunity to meet with key project team members
including Public Works Project Manager Darren Shannon
Capital Improvement Program Manager Jason McKay
Parks and Recreation Project Manager Timothy Conner
and Associate Landscape Architect Matthew Jurney from the planning and design firm Kimley-Horn
According to The Croquet Foundation of America, croquet is believed to have been first played by 13th-century French peasants who used crudely fashioned mallets to whack wooden balls through hoops made of willow branches.
Croquet became a favorite pastime of the elite in the 1930s and 40s.

That six-in-a-row run included the first five Super Eight titles; that tournament began in 1991

who finished the regular season on a 1-9 slide
We may get Mark Pope vs. Rick Pitino this season after all. According to St. John’s podcaster Dave Berov
John’s is replacing UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic
The Cats were scheduled to face the Bruins in this year’s event
meaning that they will face Pitino’s Red Storm unless the schedule changes
Kentucky is 5-6 in the CBS Sports Classic, most recently losing to Ohio State in New York. Atlanta has been kind to the Cats, who beat Duke in the Champions Classic in State Farm Arena last year and North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic in 2023. Hopefully, it’ll come through for Kentucky once again.
