In the intense hours leading up to the beginning of the Conclave convened to elect the new Successor of the Apostle Peter
it is worthwhile to recall a fundamental aspect of the ministry of the Bishop of Rome—one particularly perceived by the People of God: fatherhood
upon the unexpected announcement of the death of Pope Francis
Pope Saint Paul VI reflected on the experience of fatherhood during a conversation with his friend
upon returning from his journey to India in December 1964
The Pope had been greeted in the streets upon arrival by more than a million people from all religions
surrounding the open-roofed Lincoln that Paul VI would later donate to Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Pope Paul VI confided to Guitton, “I believe that of all the dignities of a Pope
I once accompanied Pius XII during solemn ceremonies
He would throw himself into the crowd as into the pool of Bethesda
But between witnessing fatherhood and being personally a father
there is an ocean of difference. Fatherhood is a feeling that invades the spirit and heart
but only grows—because the number of children grows.”
Pope Saint Paul VI added, “It is not so much a function as a fatherhood
Never—not even for a moment—have I felt tired when raising my hand to bless
I shall never grow weary of blessing or forgiving."
"When I arrived in Bombay," he said
"there were twenty kilometers to travel to reach the Congress venue
attentive crowds that one sees only in India
A priest friend who was near me—I believe that by the end he was supporting my arm
but a brother—less than all—because I carry the weight of all.”
“less than all,” because he carries the burden of all
Several months before that experience in India
Pope Paul VI had already felt what it meant to be quite literally “swallowed” by the embrace of the people
the crowd was so immense that it disrupted the planned welcome ceremony
exiting with difficulty and shielded by King Hussein’s soldiers
passed with great effort through the Damascus Gate—his entourage unable to accompany him
hemmed in by the tightly packed crowd in the ancient alleys of the Holy City
it seemed he would be swallowed up by the throng
told a group of journalists gathered outside the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem that many years earlier
Giovanni Battista Montini had confided to him, “I dream of a Pope who lives free from the pomp of the court and the imprisonments of protocol
Bevilacqua concluded, “That is why I am convinced that today
he is happier than when he descends into Saint Peter’s seated on the gestatorial chair…”

The conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor will begin on May 7
Over 130 cardinal electors will vote in the conclave
the largest group of cardinal electors ever
It is also arguably the most diverse group of electors ever

the more “representation” those Catholics get in the conclave via the cardinal or cardinals who serve them.

The upcoming conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis will be the largest in the history of the Catholic Church
with 133 cardinal electors expected to gather in the Sistine Chapel on May 7
The unprecedented number surpasses all previous papal conclaves
breaking the previous record of 115 electors in the 2005 and 2013 elections
It also marks the first time a conclave will be held with more than 120 voting cardinals — the limit set by St
John Paul II in his 1996 apostolic constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.

At a time when some postulate that Europe might soon become irrelevant because of the increasing prominence of the Global South — where the Church is growing fastest — it remains
as its institutional and theological center of gravity
With currently 53 of the 135 voting cardinals coming from Europe — a third of whom are Italians — their collective priorities and concerns will influence not only the choice of the next pope but also the direction of the Church in a rapidly changing world.
It is becoming clear, however, that the European bloc is no longer unified, writes Solène Tadié in the National Catholic Register
The qualities of a pope go far beyond merely being a kind of CEO of the Catholic Church
he should possess a strong faith and humility
be willing to adhere to the Church’s teachings and apostolic tradition
and personify the pope’s ancient title as “servus servorum Dei,” the servant of the servants of God
But he should also possess other exceptional qualities, according to Edward Pentin at the National Catholic Register

Cardinal Gerhard Müller calls for a deeper, faith-driven approach to overcome factionalism as cardinals prepare for the upcoming papal conclave, reports CNA Deutsch

Peter learns something important about Easter Life in the readings for the Third Sunday of Easter, Year C
In Sunday Readings columns at this site and the Extraordinary Story podcast
I’ve been discovering the true meaning of Easter: Jesus Christ
is undoing the sin of the first Adam and through the Church re-Edenizing the world
You could call our new life “the Easter Life” and as this Sunday’s Gospel reveals
because the longing for second chances is built into our hearts
“Forgive us our debts” is one of the most powerful petitions in the Our Father
It fulfills a longing that starts as children: When children attempt a stunt on the playground and miss
“I call do-overs!” and their friends generously allow that
But Satan is the opposite of children on the playground
He does not allow any “do-overs;” Once he gets us to sin
We sin because we think it will free us from constraints and allow us to thrive
but the horrifying reality of sin is that it traps us
Othello realizes that he can’t un-kill Desdemona and despairs — he is trapped by his sin
just like the characters in Fargo and Breaking Bad and countless other stories
Pope Francis in his autobiography wrote about how his whole life has been haunted by the time as a young man that he snubbed his father on his death bed
“How I wish I could replay that scene!” he said
Judy Garland was pressured by her movie studio to abort her first child
and she never forgave herself — the memory fueled her depression
The Good News of Easter — and therefore the Good News of Christianity — is that Jesus Christ
heals our deepest hurts and gave us all a second chance
First: Peter gets to do over his reaction to a miraculous catch
Jesus got into his boat and started preaching
When Jesus said “lower your nets for a catch,” Peter reacted by complaining that he hadn’t caught anything all night
after casting his nets anyway he received that first miraculous catch that almost sunk his boat when he pulled it in
But as it dawned on Peter that this was no mere preacher but someone truly special
the Lord once again directs Peter toward a miraculous catch
The Gospel also includes a telling detail a little later that is easy to miss:
“Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore”
but worth noting: The first time he received a miraculous catch of fish from the Lord
wiser Peter knows that just because the Lord blesses you doesn’t mean he gives your boat miraculous powers
In order to accommodate the Lord’s blessing
Second: Peter Gets a second chance to come to Jesus across the water
Peter once walked on water at the Lord’s command
but then he sank when he took note of the winds and waves instead of staying focused on Jesus
tell me to come to you across the water.” In this Sunday’s Gospel
right off the boat — and has to splash the 100 yards to shore
Maybe he expected to walk on the water — after all
he put more clothes on before stepping into the sea
But what actually happens amounts to the same act of faith
Peter once lacked trust in Jesus on the water and had to shout “Save me!” with a mouth full of water
he is so focused on Jesus that he steps into the sea again
only this time even sinking into the water won’t stop him
“Wash not just my feet but my hands and head as well!” and here he gets his wish
the Gospel tells us that Jesus had made a charcoal fire
This is the second time the Gospel of John mentions a charcoal fire
The first was in the courtyard before the early morning trial of Jesus on Good Friday
Peter during the Passion that he was praying that he would strengthen his brothers’ faith
I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you.” But then Peter famously failed
John describes how the denials happened by a charcoal fire
“the Lord turned and looked at Peter” and Peter wept bitterly
and Jesus gives him a golden opportunity to reverse it here
by professing his love for Jesus three times next to another early morning fire
repeating three times that he loves him and receiving the command to lead his flock
Fourth: Peter gets to do over his leadership of the Church
“I am going fishing.” His leadership of the apostles is such that several agree to join him
“Someone else will … lead you where you do not want to go.” That is the life that Peter has ahead of him
where he is sent various places based on the needs of the Church
we see how his leadership is transformed into his Easter life
He is no longer denying Jesus in the courtyard of the Sanhedrin
saying: “Though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree
God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior
He is no longer leading his people in fishing for fish — now he is leading the Church as it fishes for more Christians
Jesus Christ died and rose to give us all a Second Chance
and now not only are we not separated from God
we are welcomed into his company for an intimate meal
The Second Reading describes what we experience at Mass
looked and heard the voices of many angels who surrounded the throne,” he says
“Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea
cry out: ‘To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor
At each Mass we gather around the altar of the Lamb and are incorporated into his new life
Our second chance starts in the confessional
where we leave our sins behind; it continues at the altar
where Peter and his Church feed his sheep with the Real Presence of our Risen Savior; and then we are sent out of our churches to be his witness in the world

Peter as the geographic midpoint on our treks to the Twin Cities
It meant there were only two more towns before Belle Plaine

and I’m hard-pressed to think of a more Minnesota place for a day of exploration or peaceful weekend escape
tracing back to the early 1850s when Swedish immigrants settled in the area
it played a pivotal role in the early history of Minnesota
even earning a place in the conversation about the state’s capital—before St
Peter was a serious contender due to its central location along the Minnesota River
It was even recommended as the capital by some of Minnesota’s early political leaders
a last-minute maneuver in the state’s legislative branch prevented the change (a chairman actually hid the physical bill to stop it from happening)
Though it didn’t turn out to be the capital
Peter’s historical importance is undeniable
The city played a pivotal role in one of the most consequential events in Minnesota’s history: the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851
marked a defining moment in the relationship between the United States government and the Dakota people
the Dakota Nation ceded about 24 million acres of land to the U.S.
which included much of what would become southern and central Minnesota
though these promises were never fully honored
The land that had been home to the Dakota for centuries was quickly transformed
accelerating the state’s settlement and expansion
positioned as it was along the Minnesota River

we’ve seen a good deal of the Vatican just lately
the two of us visited the place a few years ago through the good offices of Sr Nancy
Natalie’s old Pittsburgh buddy and co-conspirator
who went to Rome to be a translator for the Vatican newspaper and work in Vatican archaeology
If you’re looking for the tomb of Saint Peter she’s a good lady to know
The place has changed lately because of security concerns
Vatican Square used to be a crowded traffic intersection until vehicles were banned (Mussolini in 1937
it was still a collection of ordinary pedestrian streets
The only close laundromats were across the square from our hostel (more later) and we weren’t the only laymen toting a laundry bag past the saints and apostles and the front door of St Peter’s Basilica
There’s a good hardware store right next to the laundromat
Sr Nancy engineered a room for us to stay at a hostel for religious pilgrims
The best laugh l ever got out of Natalie’s mother was my description of the premises: a narrow bed on each side of the room
and a portrait of the Virgin Mary in between
We slept soundly and the food was excellent
an independent state entirely surrounded by Rome
which is famously built on seven hills that stick up above the landscape like our Indian mounds
The Circus of Nero was a race track up on Vatican Hill
and as part of the half-time show they crucified Saint Peter for the crowd and buried him in a nearby Jewish cemetery
The Throne of St Peter is placed right at that spot
Oh: in case your plans include funny business involving those colorfully costumed Swiss Guards who patrol the place
you should know that each one carries a Glock automatic pistol in a seriously well-worn holster
They’re still from Switzerland and each one is a scary-looking dude
The manhole covers have “SPQR” cast into them
(That means “The Senate and the People of Rome,” you Philistine.) I came across a construction crew digging their way down to a water shutoff valve
and the sides of the hole revealed maybe eight previous pavements
including the big stones of the original Roman roads near the bottom
every subway stop had to include an archaeological museum to contain and exhibit the stuff they’d dug up
the streets are lined with Roman guys working on their cars: serious work
The hardware stores sell welding supplies and plumbing fittings with the same sizes as ours: ½
Go figure.Natalie looked at the clothing stores with less enthusiasm: each displayed maybe ten insanely costly sweaters or pairs of shoes in tiny glass spaces styled like old Vogue magazine covers
ages gracefully in our little old house in Lancaster
where Natalie and the three cats retain their youthful appearance by extracting and absorbing the last traces of life energy from his deteriorating corpus

From the very beginning of Russia's war in Ukraine
Pope Francis continuously offered to mediate to help bring about peace
He appealed for an end to the war at almost every public appearance
and his prayers for "martyred Ukraine" became a familiar refrain
calls for dialogue - for key players to come together and find a way to put an end to the conflict
such a dialogue took place between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
Photos showed the two Presidents seated face-to-face in St
Peter's Basilica, deep in conversation
A spokesperson for the White House called the discussion "very productive"
said that it had been a "good meeting," adding that the pair had "discussed a lot one on one."
"Hoping for results on everything we covered," President Zelensky wrote on social media
Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out."
that ceasefire had appeared less and less likely
The last time Presidents Trump and Zelensky met in person
the discussion devolved into an acrimonious verbal brawl
President Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened to "walk away" from efforts to broker a peace deal
Russia carried out its deadliest air attack on Kyiv since the beginning of the year
President Zelensky said it was a "very symbolic meeting
If those results do manifest themselves - if the 'just peace' so often spoken of by the late Pope is achieved - it might just be Francis' first miracle

Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 2/8/2025 6:39:00 PM | Pete Janny
RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Manhattan used the adrenaline from an intense 40 minutes of regulation to outlast Saint Peter's in overtime 84-83. Redshirt sophomore Devin Dinkins took control of the game from the free throw line
A three from Will Sydnor at the 12:56 mark of the first half tied the score at 11
Manhattan responded to a quick 5-0 run from Saint Peter's with another three from Sydnor that cut the deficit to two with 10:54 left
Saint Peter's grinded out the next few possessions to open up a 27-19 lead following a pair of free throws from Adetokunbo Bakare
Manhattan leaned on multiple scorers to whittle the deficit. A three from Shaquil Bender and then a three-point play by Will Sydnor brought the Jaspers to within two at 27-25
Moments later, a dunk by Marko Ljubicic on a nice feed from Sydnor cut Saint Peter's lead to one at 28-27
Ljubicic was whistled for a technical foul for hanging on the rim too long
Saint Peter's took advantage with a free throw from Bakare and then a three ball from him stretched the Peacocks lead back to 5 with 3:07 left
Saint Peter's went into halftime ahead 40-35
Back-to-back threes from Bender and Sydnor gave Manhattan a 43-42 lead with 17:33 left in the second half
A 7-0 run culminating in a lay-up from Mouhamed Sow pushed the Peacocks lead to 7 with 11:24 left
rallied Manhattan back to within 2 with under 10 minutes left
With Saint Peter's clinging to their lead, Masiah Gilyard converted his jump shot and massive two-handed slam to tie the score at 63
With the game hanging in the balance less than two minutes left
exchanged baskets to set up an exciting final minute
Manhattan's defense came up big yet again by forcing a turnover by Marcus Randolph on the final possession of regulation
With Manhattan trailing by four in overtime
spurring the Jaspers' final comeback during which Dinkins took over down the stretch
Four free throws sandwiched around a three-pointer gave Dinkins seven points in a span of 1:24
drawing the Jaspers even with the Peacocks with 1:05 left
After grabbing an offensive rebound with just over two seconds left
Gilyard was fouled by Zaakir Williamson to earn a trip to the line
Gilyard went 1 for 2 which was enough to seal the win
The overtime date with Saint Peter's was the Jaspers' fourth overtime battle of the season
Manhattan moves to 2-2 (.500) in games decided in overtime
The Jaspers have swept the season series versus the Peacocks by a total of four points
The season sweep over the Peacocks marks the first time since the 2018-19 season that Manhattan beat Saint Peter's in both meetings
Dinkins' 26 points tied a career high that he set at Siena on January 3
Dinkins went a perfect 11-11 from the line on Saturday afternoon
the redshirt sophomore guard is shooting 86.1% (93-108) from the charity stripe
Bender and Gilyard have started in all 21 games for the Jaspers this season
Manhattan is one of four teams in the country (Marquette
Saint Mary's) that has deployed the same starting line-up in every game this season
Ljubicic's 7 points marked a career high for the freshman from Croatia
He also doubled his career high in minutes played by logging 14 vs
Saint Peter's was their most made triples in a game since connecting on 13 at Wagner back in December
Manhattan improved to 2-0 in games against a repeat opponent
the Jaspers concluded their season series with Mount St
Mary's by knocking off the Mountaineers in Emmitsburg by a final score of 74-64
Gallagher on the clutch plays late: "I really thought Masiah made huge two plays (in overtime) with three from the corner and then grabbing the offensive rebound before getting fouled
Gallagher after improving to 6-6 in MAAC play: "We're peaking at the right time."
Manhattan will get another try at Merrimack (14-10
11-2 MAAC) when it welcomes the Warriors to Draddy for a 7 P.M
The Jaspers took a 69-62 loss in North Andover on January 12

a new call to priests to put themselves at the service of all
and his concern for migrants are some of the themes Pope Francis addressed in 2021 in an interview with Noel Díaz at the papal residence of Casa Santa Marta
Díaz is the founder of lay association ‘El sembrador
which announces the Word of God through television and radio
The previously unaired interview with Pope Francis
originally intended to be part of a documentary
please find the English translation of the complete transcript of Noel Díaz’s interview with Pope Francis:
you are the successor of this man called Simon
That Jesus calls Simon into the midst of the people
and the people go to listen to Jesus because they are thirsty for the Word of God
Jesus always calls His priests from the people
The second thing: the signs that Jesus does
In order for them to have confidence in Him
What does Peter do when he sees Jesus do this
for I am a sinner.” And that is where Jesus gets to where He wants to go
Peter’s way is to be with the people to listen to the Lord
to go out and fish at the Lord’s command and to work that miracle
The third thing: recognising his littleness
I will now make you a fisher of men.” This is the fourth step
in order for him to be the head of an office
He doesn’t anoint him to organise the country politically
And how do you feel about taking Peter’s place
[despite the fact] that I am a sinner like Peter
The next passage I want to share with you is from the Gospel of Matthew
when the Apostle Peter makes his confession…
“What do people say about me?” “They say that you are a prophet
He says to them: “But you…” – in other words
Jesus addresses us challenging us: “What do you say for yourself
What do you say about me?” It is the dialogue with Jesus
already showing himself to be their leader
but you will be called Peter.” He had made him the cornerstone of the group
Let’s put ourselves in the scene: saying to a person: “You are not Tom
the Son of God.” If you say that to someone today
And Jesus explains why he had the courage to play: “For what you said was not revealed to you by any science
when He sees Peter took a gamble like this
on this rock I will build my Church.” On the fragility of a man who has the solidity of a stone that relies on the word of Jesus
Peter is amazed at what Jesus says to him: “My Father has revealed this to you.” And then Jesus says
who was already feeling a bit like the group’s “top dog”
“You are the receptacle of my Father’s revelation,” challenges him
Because he wanted Him out of the path of the Cross
It’s the great correction of the first pope
if we ever stray from his plan of salvation
Because we are sinners and we can go astray
History shows us some popes who preferred a different path
my confidence is in the word of Jesus who gives me firmness when He chooses me and who slaps me upside the head when I make a mistake
to face the challenges and attacks from the secular world
But I am sure it is more painful to face the attacks from within
And this says: “You are Peter.” You are now the successor of Peter and these forces
when hope is placed not in the revelation of the Father or in the choice of Jesus
“We are well off because we have money.” Imagine a priest
a bishop who says: “Our Church is doing well
we have lay people who give us money and we are doing well.” Don’t put your hope there because you’re going to fall apart
They are not the forces of the Father’s revelation
So many martyrs in the Church teach us this
Today I just want to propose one more Scripture passage in which the Lord confirms
“Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time
you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him
you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted
and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go’…”
He had promised Peter when he confessed Him that the gates of hell would not prevail
that he would stand firm as long as he was on the rock
Peter is grieved because he remembers the three times he denied Him
And at the end the Lord confirms him for the third time
“From now on nothing bad will happen to you
because when you are old you will go where you don’t want to go
they will take you where you don’t want to go
they will strip you and you will end up like Me
the way of putting one’s trust in Him alone
It’s interesting just as when Peter confessed that Jesus was the Son of God – the power of the Holy Spirit makes him confess that – he then loses his bearings
what’s going to happen to this one?” It is the gossiping Peter
the Peter who forgets at that moment what the Lord had spoken to him in order to have a gossip about someone else
but the Lord takes care of us with His power
I would like to finish by talking about today’s martyrs
There are more martyrs today than at the beginning of the Church
martyrs whose heads are cut off just because they are Christians and they confess Jesus
Martyrs who are in prison for confessing Jesus
Because martyrdom means “witness.” I mentioned those who give their lives
that woman who works every day to educate their children in the Christian life and give them testimony
he’s not a martyr if they didn’t kill him” [someone might say]
And that carries forward the Church as well
may the Lord open your hearts and may His Word enter in there
So I bless you from the bottom of my heart
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit
those who have had to leave their homeland
who are welcomed by so many good people or even indifferent people
To all migrants I give my blessing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
Hundreds of thousands of the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square on Sunday to pay homage to Pope Francis on the second of nine days the Vatican has set aside to mourn the beloved pontiff

On hold: Pope Francis' death prompts postponement
Many of the cardinals are gathering in daily meetings to continue operations of the Vatican and to select a conclave date

‘How would you name the wrong track for the conclave?’ I would say the idea that unity is the priority,” Czerny said
He recalled the fear and sadness of the apostles after Jesus’ death and said the image represents the Church’s state of mind now as Christians mourn Pope Francis

Some members of the College of Cardinals went to Francis' tomb at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on Sunday to pay homage
Access to the tomb was open to the public all day Sunday starting at 7 a.m
The cardinals then gathered there for evening prayer led by the basilica's coadjutor archpriest
Some of the same cardinals will take part in the conclave next month at which the next pope will be selected
More than 30,000 people had filed by the tomb by midday Sunday

Francis broke tradition in picking burial site outside VaticanFrancis became the first pope to be buried outside the Vatican in more a century when he was laid to rest at St
The burial took place Saturday after his casket was transported through the streets of Rome in a modified popemobile following a funeral service that saw more than a quarter million people
who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires
had requested a "simple" burial "without particular ornamentation."
The casket was placed in a simple marble tomb in a side aisle of the St
“Franciscus," is inscribed on top − as the pope instructed − while a reproduction of the plain cross that he used to wear around his neck hangs above the niche
With the passing of Pope Francis, who presided over the Roman Catholic Church's estimated 1.4 billion followers for 12 years, attention now turns to the selection of his successor
The decision is made through a time-honored process known as the conclave
an election conducted in secrecy behind the locked doors of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel
Soon, the College of Cardinals, the church’s most senior members and the acting head of the church until a new pope is selected, will convene to choose the new pontiff. Only those under age 80 are eligible to vote; of the church’s 252 cardinals, 135 will serve as electors, according to the Vatican
The conclave, customarily held 15-20 days after the pope’s death, is anticipated to start from May 6 to May 11. Read more here.
At the fourth Novemdiales Mass celebrated in St Peter’s Basilica
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti reflected on the passage from Matthew's Gospel describing the Final Judgement
when all peoples of the world are gathered before Christ
Others will find themselves alone - outside love
“Excluded from the Kingdom,” Cardinal Gambetti said
“they remain desperately alone in their soul"
But Cardinal Gambetti invited the faithful to look deeper
“Which of these attitudes do we embody,” he asked
both “personally and institutionally?"
is not about knowing all the answers or performing all the right actions
when did we see you?” The word used - oráo in Greek - means more than simply seeing
The message is clear: we meet Christ when we meet others
“The Word became flesh,” the Cardinal continued
And it is this humanity that Cardinal Gambetti saw in Pope Francis
He recounted the farewell to the Pope written by Edith Bruck
who described the Pope as “a man who loved
As the Church prays for Pope Francis and walks through these days of mourning
Cardinal Gambetti reminded the faithful that “Christian humanity” must be at the centre of the Church’s mission
everyone is called to live in the Church"
Pope Francis once said - words that today feel more urgent than ever
Peter’s encounter with Cornelius offers a model: openness
and the courage to proclaim the Gospel through relationship
Cardinal Gambetti noted that on this Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena
whose bold love for Christ saw no boundaries
the Church is reminded of the call to walk closely with humanity - because God has done the same

Today the Roman Martyrology commemorates St. Angelus of Jerusalem, O.Carm (1185-1220), priest, martyr, hermit, mystic, reformer, thaumaturge, missionary, convert from Judaism and a professed Priest of the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. He is also known as St. Angelus of Sicily and St. Angelo. Born in 1145 at Jerusalem and died by being stabbed to death in 1220 at Licata, Sicily.
Bl. Caterina Cittadini is also commemorated today. She was an Italian Roman Catholic religious from Bergamo who established the Ursuline Sisters of Saint Jerome Emiliani. The order was dedicated to the education of girls in Bergamo and in the surrounding areas and has since expanded outside of the Italian nation.
2. "Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow His steps" (Epistle). The Christian slave might complain that his membership in the Church had not alleviated the harsh conditions of his life. St. Peter points to the example of Christ who was in all things to be the model of the Christian.

The sisters left the orphanage in 1823 to live with their cousins Giovanni and Antonio Cittadini, both parish priests at Calolzio, Italy. Caterina became a teacher at a girl‘s public school in Somasca in 1824. The sisters felt a call to the religious life; their spiritual director recommended that they should stay in Somasca, and become the basis of a new congregation.
In 1826 the sisters rented a house in Somasca, bought and furnished a building, and in October opened a boarding school for girls. Caterina taught religion, managed the school, and instituted the oratory style of education for her girls. Word of her success spread, attracting more students. The sisters established another “Cittadini” private school in 1832, and another in 1836.
Giuditta directed these new school until her sudden death in 1840. Caterini’s cousin, Father Antonio Cittadini, died in 1841, followed quickly by her spiritual director from the orphanage. The rapid succession of tragedy ruined Caterina’s health, and she fell gravely ill, but was cured through the intercession of Saint Jerome Emilani.
Caterina quit her public teaching position in 1845 to manage the schools, care for the orphans, and guide the three companions who help her. To help organize the work and lives of her companions, she wrote the beginnings of a new rule similar to that of religious orders. In 1850 she obtained permission to build a private oratory to keep the Blessed Sacrament at her boarding school. In 1851 she applied for approval of her new religious family.

Peter points to the example of Christ who was in all things to be the model of the Christian
neither was guile found in His mouth," but nevertheless he was subjected to persecution and injustice
But the Christian is expected to be a follower of Christ
but delivered Himself to him that judged Him unjustly." If then Christians feel that they have not achieved the liberty and the equality they long for
they are to remember that Christ had come not to right all the wrongs and injustices in the world
but to give an "example that you should follow His steps."
Men often complain against God when they suffer what they consider undeserved misfortunes
They think that God ought to interfere and punish injustice and wickedness here and now
They are like the apostles James and John; they want to call down fire from heaven and destroy those who appear to them to act improperly
Christ made it clear that all injustice will be rectified eventually
but that for the present He wishes to allow the cockle to grow among the wheat
When the proper time comes God will deal with injustice in His own way
But it is not only the slave who is to be subject to authority
and to recognize that mistreatment patiently borne is a service acceptable to God and meritorious for man
Obedience to legitimate authority does not depend on the worthiness of the official exercising authority
Christ Himself had commanded His disciples to obey the officials of the Jewish Church
even though they might not be personally worthy of the office they held
He was obedient first of all to His parents
"He went down with them and came to Nazareth
He observed the ritual and the laws of the Jewish Church
He obeyed the laws of the Roman authorities and paid the tribute they demanded
He set off on a Genoese ship on 1 April 1219 and stopped first in Messina before heading off to Civitavecchia before he ended up in Rome to meet with the pope
The friar preached in the Basilica of Saint John Lateran while in Rome where he met both Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Dominic
He foretold that Francis would receive the stigmata while Francis foretold his premature death.st angelus of jerusalem snip From there he was a guest of the Basilians in Palermo where he was for about a month
before preaching in Agrigento for over a month before settling in Licata
He had healed seven lepers and the ailing Archbishop of Palermo Bernardo de Castanea while in Palermo
He settled on the Sicilian island though his fame as a wonderworker caused crowds to flock to him
He also had success in converting some Jews though most Jews in Palermo came to despise him for this since he himself was once Jewish
He wanted to convert a Knight named Berenger
Catholic tradition states that Berenger was living in incest and that Angelo convinced the knight’s companion to leave him
Berenger became enraged and arranged to have him attacked and murdered
in front of the Church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo in Licata
He didn’t die from the attack until four days after the attack and during that time
he prayed for his assassin and asked the civil authorities to pardon him
setting an example for all those that he preached to
He was buried at Saints Filippo and Giacomo Church
His sepulchre at Licata quickly became a site of Pilgrimage

Pope Francis, who died Monday at the age of 88 after 12 years as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, was honored with a funeral Saturday morning in St. Peter's Square in front of the Papal Basilica in Vatican City.
The Mass was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, and attended by leaders from all over the world.

Palestrina, a lifetime resident of Rome, served as choirmaster at the Basilica of St. John Lateran and at St. Mary Major at different times in his life, according to a foundation dedicated to him
He also served for several years as the maestro of the Cappella Giulia
Palestrina composed liturgical music for Masses and motets
becoming a leading composer for polyphonic music — in which various melodies sung simultaneously work in harmony
Peter’s Basilica accomplished this masterfully
with some instrumental accompaniment in between pieces.

Almost immediately at the start of the Easter season
the Universal Church found herself suddenly in a sede-vacante (“empty seat”) period following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday morning
His funeral was held the following Saturday
the traditional nine-day period of mourning the death of a pope.
the Cappella Giulia sang of Easter as Vatican personnel worked to prepare the church for the sixth Novemdiales Mass to be celebrated for Pope Francis’ soul
The Mass would begin about an hour after the concert.

Peter’s Square is transformed into a small piece of the Netherlands as flowers from all parts of the country color the steps of the smallest nation in the world
It all started in 1985 with the beatification of a Dutch priest
Dutch florists decorated the Square in honor of their countrymen
they were invited to decorate the Square for Easter
One man has been involved from the beginning in this tradition
which has now become a sense of national pride
Charles Lansdorp recalls that very first Easter where Pope St
John Paul II thanked the Dutch people for their flowers in their native language
everybody knows what you’re talking about.”
Lansdorp says this collaboration between the Vatican and Dutch florists “is the longest project” in the flower industry in the Netherlands
this collaboration “brings spring to Rome” as thousands of flowers line the area in front of St
In order to prepare the flowers and decorations for Easter
the Vatican gardeners and Dutch florists work together
Volunteers start working on Holy Thursday collecting
the world watches as the floral arrangements come together
Some 10,000 flowers from various parts of the countries are driven from the Netherlands to Vatican City over the course of two days
Peter’s Basilica are transformed as “it is almost like we bring spring to Rome.”
“We will have the colors of the logo of the pilgrims for the Holy Year,” Dr
it is no wonder that the Easter flowers are such a source of pride for the Netherlands
He says this activity has perhaps the biggest visibility for the Dutch industry worldwide
“It’s unique because we have the cut flowers
“It is really the Netherlands presenting itself as a flower industry.”

WAMC Northeast Public Radio highlighted St
Peter’s Health Partners’ Robotics Day of Discovery
with four robotic arms able to perform minimally invasive surgery
Saint Peter’s Hospital Acute Care Chief Medical Officer Dr
Nick Montalto says the new technology is safer for both practitioners and patients
“It allows us to do very minimally invasive surgeries through very small incisions with very fast recoveries for patients that were that is really a tremendous advance,” Montalto said
the ability to actually feel tissue and the manipulation of the instruments is something that has not existed before,” Montalto said
Montalto says the level of precision possible through modern robotic surgery machines is unmatched
“Instead of the equivalent of looking at a television screen
now you see as if you’re in the body
And so that visualization lets you see blood vessels that are so small you never would have been able to see them before
You see actual capillaries,” Montalto said
who was visiting her mother in the hospital
stopped by the demonstration to give the machine a whirl
After undergoing minimally invasive surgery a decade ago
she was impressed with the advanced technology on display
I have to admit I’m not one to play video games
and you can see how much easier this makes it for the surgeon,” Friedlander said
The hospital demonstration was packed with small children
Local Pre-K students from Saint Peter’s Mercy Cares for Kids program were invited to take a look
Peter’s Director of Surgery Jeffrey Stone says robotic surgery makes the medical profession accessible to the next generation
who might already have some related experience
“We’re seeing people who grow up playing video games much more
much more comfortable at the table and at the console
because it’s something that they’re familiar with
you feel the tug through the through the machine
you don’t necessarily feel that,” Stone said

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's basketball team dropped a 69-61 decision against the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena
Senior guard Bryce Johnson paced three Retrievers in double digits with 15 points and was joined by graduate student forward Josh Odunowo (10 points) and senior guard Marlon Short (12 points
"We knew the game was going to be a rock fight from the opening tip, and Saint Peter's was able to establish their physicality and pace," stated UMBC Head Coach Jim Ferry
"I thought we really guarded very well in the opening half
but we broke down defensively in the second half
We've got to play better in the second half to beat an excellent team like that."
The Peacocks (1-3) connected on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) three-point field goals in the second half to break open a tight contest for much of the contest
UMBC (3-2) held a 16-11 advantage with 8:34 left in the opening half after sophomore guard Ace Valentine scored the final five points of a 5-0 mini-run
The Retrievers still held a 20-17 advantage after Short converted a jumper in the lane at the 6:47 mark

The visitors settled for a 28-26 lead at the break
Junior forward Louie Jordan provided UMBC with their final lead
after swishing a triple with 17:22 remaining in the game
The Peacocks responded with nine consecutive points to take their largest lead up to that point
Sophomore guard Armoni Ziegler stuck bookend treys during the critical stretch
Trailing by nine with just under ten minutes left
Short recorded consecutive buckets to trim the deficit to 53-48 at the eight-minute mark
Saint Peter's responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from junior guard Eric Morgan Jr
and senior guard Marcus Randolph to claim a 59-48 advantage with just 5:53 left
The hosts did not go away quickly, inching within 65-60 after a fast break layup by senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. with thirty-six seconds left
but the visitors converted all four of their free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach
UMBC made just 4-of-20 of their attempts from behind the arc in the contest and finished at 38.9 percent overall (21-of-54) from the field
Saint Peter's converted 24-of-55 (43.6 percent) field goal attempts and finished 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from deep

Pope Francis officially opened the Holy Year 2025 by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door at St
followed by a group of children with their parents and by faithful representing 27 nations
Pope Francis pushes open the Holy Door of St
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In the quiet of Christmas Eve
launching what he called a "Jubilee of Hope."
After the reading of a brief passage from the Gospel of John in which Jesus describes himself as "the door," Pope Francis briefly left the atrium of the basilica
But when the cardinals in the front row sat down
He was pushed in his wheelchair up the ramp to the Holy Door
he raised himself from the chair to knock five times
which had been framed in a garland of green pine branches
decorated with red roses and gold pinecones
Peter's Basilica has been a fixture of the Catholic Church's celebration of jubilee years since the Holy Year 1450
Pope Francis chose "Pilgrims of Hope" as the theme for the Holy Year 2025
The rite of opening the decorated bronze door began inside the basilica with the reading in different languages of biblical passages prophesying the birth of the savior "who brings his kingdom of peace into our world," as the lector explained
to emphasize how the birth of Jesus "proclaims the dawn of hope in our world," the Gospel of St
Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus was proclaimed
"Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord."
"The steps we now take are the steps of the whole church
a pilgrim in the world and a witness of peace," the pope told the assembled cardinals
ecumenical guests and lay faithful in the atrium of the basilica
enlightened by his word and renewed by his grace," the pope continued
"may we cross the threshold of this holy temple and so enter into a season of mercy and forgiveness in which every man and woman may encounter and embrace the path of hope
Echoing the biblical jubilee themes of reconciliation and forgiveness
Pope Francis prayed that the Holy Spirit would soften hardened hearts so that "enemies may speak to each other again
adversaries may join hands and people seek to meet together."
"Grant that the church may bear faithful witness to your love and may shine forth as a vital sign of the blessed hope of your kingdom," he prayed.
to the right of the basilica's center doors

The 16 panels on the bronze doors illustrate key moments in salvation history
Christ presented as the shepherd rescuing a lost sheep
the crucifixion and the risen Jesus appearing to the disciples
crossed the threshold after the pope and the altar servers
Then 54 people from 27 nations -- including the United States and Canada
Many of them wore the traditional dress of their nations or ethnic groups
Neither the Vatican press office nor the Jubilee press office released the names of the pilgrims or explained how they were chosen
Also among the first to cross the threshold were representatives of other Christian churches
The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity said in an explanatory note
"Entering through the Holy Door expresses the willingness to follow and be guided by the only begotten Son of God."
Especially during the year that will see the celebration of the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea
which solemnly defined the basics of Christian faith
the ritual "is a manifestation of the faith that all Christians share in Jesus
the ecumenical guests' participation "must not be interpreted as an attempt to associate them with elements of the jubilee
which are not in line with the practices of their respective communities."
the "selling" of indulgences helped spark the Protestant Reformation; the practice was later banned by the Council of Trent
The Catholic Church believes that Christ and the saints have accumulated a treasure of merits
which other believers -- who are prayerful and repentant -- can draw upon to reduce or erase the punishment they are due because of sins they have committed
receiving Communion and offering prayers to receive an indulgence is a key part of the Holy Year.

Made possible by funding from
a Benedictine monk who strove to purify the Church during the early years of its second millennium
Pope Benedict XVI described him as "one of the most significant figures of the 11th century ..
a lover of solitude and at the same time a fearless man of the Church
committed personally to the task of reform."
Born during 1007 in the Italian city of Ravenna
Peter belonged to a large family but lost both his father and mother early in life
An older brother took the boy into his household
took steps to provide for his education; and the priest's own name
Peter excelled in school while also taking up forms of asceticism
and spending long hours in prayer with an emphasis on reciting the Psalms
He offered hospitality to the poor as a means of serving Christ
and eventually resolved to embrace voluntary poverty himself through the Order of Saint Benedict
lived out their devotion to the Cross of Christ through a rigorous rule of life
and practiced many physical mortifications
Peter embraced this way of life somewhat excessively at first
Deeply versed in the Bible and the writings of earlier theologians
Peter developed his own theological acumen and became a skilled preacher
The leaders of other monasteries sought his help to build up their monks in holiness
and in 1043 he took up a position of leadership as the prior of Fonte Avellana
Five other hermitages were established under his direction
Serious corruption plagued the Church during Peter's lifetime
including the sale of religious offices and immorality among many of the clergy
Through his writings and involvements in controversies of the day
the prior of Fonte Avellana called on members of the hierarchy and religious orders to live out their commitments and strive for holiness
Pope Stephen IX became determined to make Peter Damian a bishop
a goal he accomplished only by demanding the monk's obedience under threat of excommunication
Consecrated as the Bishop of Ostia in November of that year
he also joined the College of Cardinals and wrote a letter encouraging its members to set an example for the whole Church
and the election of his successor Nicholas II
Peter's involvement in Church controversies grew
He supported Pope Nicholas against a rival claimant to the papacy
and went to Milan as the Pope's representative when a crisis broke out over canonical and moral issues
he was forced to confront rioters who rejected papal authority
wished to withdraw from these controversies and return to the contemplative life
But Nicholas' death in 1061 caused another papal succession crisis
which the cardinal-bishop helped to resolve in favor of Alexander II
That Pope kept the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia occupied with a series of journeys and negotiations for the next six years
Peter Damian was allowed to resign his episcopate and return to the monastery at Fonte Avellana
Pope Alexander needed his help to prevent the German King Henry IV from divorcing his wife
Peter lived another two years in the monastery before making a pilgrimage to Monte Cassino
Peter returned to his own birthplace of Ravenna
to reconcile the local church with the Pope
The monk's last illness came upon him during his return from this final task
and he died after a week at a Benedictine monastery in Faenza during February of that year
Peter Damian was celebrated as a saint after his death in many of the places associated with his life
Pope Leo XII named him a Doctor of the Church and extended the observance of his feast day throughout the Western Church
Pope Francis wished a "Happy Palm Sunday and Happy Holy Week" to all those gathered for the Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion celebration in Saint Peter's Square
The Pope came out into the Square from the Basilica for around ten minutes
immediately following the final blessing of the Mass where he offered his good wishes and then visited in his wheelchair among the faithful.
Pope Francis' latest visit marked another public occasion among the people
following his presence last Sunday at the Jubilee of the Sick and the World of Healthcare and his visits to Saint Peter's Basilica last week and visit to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major yesterday to pray before the Marian icon of the Salus Populi Romani
Following his greetings to pilgrims in Saint Peter's Square
the Pope returned inside the Basilica where he paused for moments of prayer before the tomb of the Apostle Peter
and then that of Saint Pius X and the monument dedicated to Benedict XV
Before celebrating the opening Massof the second session of the General Assembly of the Synod on Wednesday morning
Pope Francis was able to see a relic of the Chair of Saint Peter (Cathedra Sancti Petri Apostoli)
the Pope was taken to the Ottoboni sacristy of St
where the ancient wooden throne that symbolizes the primacy of Peter has been temporarily placed
It has been moved there for the restoration work of Bernini's 'Baldacchino'
the famous canopy over the Altar of the Cathedra
The restoration work is conducted by the Fabric of Saint Peter
the Vatican institution currently headed by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti
Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Rome on Saturday
to pay their final respects to Pope Francis
WATCH A REPLAY OF THE FUNERAL FOR POPE FRANCIS ON SCRIPPS NEWS
the same place where he often celebrated Mass and spoke to the faithful
Those in attendance included approximately 250 cardinals
The Vatican said 12 reigning monarchs and 55 heads of state would also attend the service
and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
there were roughly 250,000 in attendance at the funeral at the square
with another 150,000 lining a processional route to pay respects as the pope's mortal remains were transferred to St
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re delivered a eulogy sermon during the mass
recalling Francis' efforts to reach some of the most marginalized people in the world
with an open heart towards everyone," Re said
"The guiding thread of his mission was also the conviction that the church is a home for all
Francis had choreographed the funeral himself when he revised and simplified the Vatican’s rites and rituals last year
His aim was to emphasize the pope’s role as a mere pastor and not “a powerful man of this world.”
It was a reflection of Francis’ 12-year project to radically reform the papacy
to stress priests as servants and to construct “a poor church for the poor.” He articulated the mission just days after his 2013 election and it explained the name he chose as pope
Francis of Assisi “who had the heart of the poor of the world,” according to the official decree of the pope's life that was placed in his simple wooden coffin before it was sealed Friday night
Francis’ body was transferred to Saint Mary Major
the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary
where he would be buried beneath a simple marble headstone
Select cardinals and people close to the pope attended a private ceremony
Francis is the first pope in a century to be buried outside the Vatican
He chose instead to be buried close to the Salus Populi Romani icon of the Virgin Mary
Pope Francis died on Monday after suffering a stroke
He had spent nearly six weeks in the hospital in February and March battling pneumonia and was released on March 23
Although his public schedule remained limited
he made a brief appearance to greet the faithful on Easter Sunday in St
As mourners paid tribute to the pope around the world this week
church officials said a further 250,000 people passed through St
Peter’s Basilica to view the late pontiff and offer prayers since Wednesday
The Vatican said nine days of mourning and Masses will be held to honor the pope and offer prayers
followed by a conclave to elect his successor

snapping Manhattan's five-game losing streak in Jersey City
Saint Peter's jumped out to an 8-0 lead following a three-pointer from Bryce Eaton at the 17:57 mark of the first half
Manhattan stopped its scoring drought when Will Sydnor came up with a steal and found Jaden Winston for an easy fast-break lay-up that cut the deficit to 8-2
Manhattan did a good job of hacking away at the Saint Peter's lead despite the Peacocks' shooting success. The Jaspers had answers for four more three-pointers from Saint Peter's. Down 20-15 following a three from Marcus Randolph, Will Sydnor delivered five straight points on a two-handed dunk and a three-pointer
and Manhattan took a 22-20 lead thanks to the quick 7-0 run
The Jaspers' resurgence included 14 consecutive points from Sydnor and Roxburgh
The duo got into a shootout with Saint Peter's sophomore guard Armoni Zeigler
who attacked the hoop with purpose in the first half and whose jumper at the 3:52 mark extended the Saint Peter's lead to 33-27
Saint Peter's eighth three-pointer of the first half came from Adetokunbo Bakare at 1:31 before Masiah Gilyard closed the half with a lay-up to send the Jaspers' into the locker room with a manageable three-point deficit at 38-35
Manhattan showed an even greater pep in its step
which was highlighted by a coast to coast tomahawk dunk for Sydnor that elicited a roar from the crowd and cut the Jaspers deficit back to two at the 15:46 mark of the second half
The Peacocks would grow their lead back up to seven with help from the charity stripe
the pair of freshmen came up huge with eight straight points—three from the former and five from the latter—to put Manhattan ahead 51-50 with 10:54 left
Back to back baskets from Marcus Randolph and Jaquel Morris tilted the advantage back to the Peacocks by three with 7:51 left
Manhattan's defense locked in while the offense continued to ride the hot hand of Roxburgh
He was set up for another three on an assist from Winston before adding another lay-up that regained a lead for Manhattan at 59-57
The Jaspers wouldn't allow another Saint Peter's basket until a lay-up from Eaton with 14 seconds left — a span of 7:37 in game clock
Eaton's drive cut the Jaspers lead to three, and he then did his part to cut the home team's deficit to one with a long three-pointer with six seconds left. However, Manhattan refused to miss from the line and used a pair of free throws from Gilyard and Shaquil Bender in the final five seconds to ice the game
The Jaspers hit a total of nine free throws in the closing minute to help clinch the win
With his 16 points, Will Sydnor now has five double-digit scoring games in eight tries
His special first half on Friday included 11 points on 5-7 shooting
all while the Jaspers had to fend off hot shooting from the Peacocks
which included a putback dunk in the first half and then the one-handed throwdown in the opening minutes of the second half
Roxburgh's 17 points are a career high for the Aussie
Both of his personal 5-0 runs in the second half established leads for Manhattan — first at 51-50 with 10:54 left and then at 59-57 with 7:13 left on the clock
The 7:37 of game clock without allowing a made field goal was the longest goal line stand of the season for the Jaspers defense
The Manhattan defense had two other stretches this season exceed five minutes without an opponent field goal (5:11 in the second half at FDU and 5:09 in the first half at Maryland)
Head coach John Gallagher on tightening up the defense tonight at Saint Peter's: "All week long we went back to the tape and put x's on the court and lines for how we want to play… It was a much better defensive performance and I thought we were really gritty diving for loose balls…That's the Manhattan I'm familiar with in practice."
Gallagher on the rapid growth of his young team: "When we built this roster we set out to beat the top teams in the league…Championship teams like Saint Peter's…I have great respect for coach (Bashir Mason)...So for us to get this win shows a lot about where we're headed but also shows that in December we're tough enough to win games like this
'you can't let the wins get to your head and the losses get to your heart.'"
Manhattan will stay in MAAC play when it hosts the Marist Red Foxes (5-2

Peter’s Basilica ahead of his funeral on Saturday in St
The basilica was bathed in a hushed silence as mourners from across the globe made a slow
shuffling procession up the main aisle to pay their last respects to Francis
The Vatican said more than 90,000 people had paid their respects by Thursday evening
The basilica closed for just a short time Thursday morning
and will stay open Thursday night as long as there are mourners
and after two hours still had not reached the basilica
“I don’t even care how much time I wait here
It’s just the opportunity to (show) how I admired Francisco in his life,’' said Fernandez
whose admiration for the pope grew during his 2016 visit to Mexico
flew on the spur of the moment from Dublin just to pay his respects
“I think it’s just really important to be here
to show our respect to the Holy Father,’' he said
We just felt it was really important to be here.”
Among the first-day mourners was a church group of 14-year-olds from near Milan who arrived for the now-suspended canonization of the first millennial saint
as well as a woman who prayed to the pope for a successful operation and an Italian family who brought their small children to see the pope’s body
“We came because we didn’t bring them when he was alive
so we thought we would bring them for a final farewell,’’ said Rosa Scorpati
who was exiting the basilica Wednesday with her three children in strollers
but I don’t think they really understood because they haven’t yet had to deal with death.”
Out of devotion to the pope and his message of inclusion
the grieving faithful joined the procession of mourners that wended from St
Peter’s Square through the basilica’s Holy Door
with the repentant among them winning an indulgence
a form of atonement granted during the Jubilee Holy Year
the line extended down the basilica’s central aisle to the pope’s simple wooden casket
Italian authorities have tightened security around the Vatican
adding drones to foot and horse patrols to their controls along the Tiber River and Via della Conciliazione
to secure the area for mourners and foreign delegation expected for the funeral
The Vatican said 130 delegations are confirmed
including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning sovereigns
Among those confirming their attendance are U.S
President Donald Trump with the First Lady Melania Trump
told a news conference on Thursday that “I believe that the ‘security machine’ is ready,’' but will remain flexible and ”ready to reshape and above all transmit a sense of serenity.’'
with four Swiss Guards standing at attention
many lifted their smartphones to snap a photo
One nun accompanying an elderly woman with a cane walked away sobbing
The mood was more one of gratitude for a pope who had
“I am very devoted to the pope,’' said Ivenes Bianco
”He was important to me because he brought many people together by encouraging coexistence.’' She cited Francis’ acceptance of the gay community and his insistence on helping the poor
Humbeline Coroy came to Rome from Perpignan
for the planned canonization Sunday of 15-year-old Carlo Acutis
which was suspended after the pope’s death
enjoying exchanges with Japanese mourners they met as they waited under the sun in St
and I traveled to Madagascar to work with poor people
Cardinals continued to arrive in Rome for Saturday’s funeral
During a morning session “the cardinals started a conversation on the church and the world,’' the details of which remain private
cardinals under 80 years of age will meet in a conclave to choose a new pope
after Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares said he would not make it to Rome for health reasons
confirmed his participation after getting cleared by doctors
and one feels that,’' said French Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco
“For the moment I do not believe the cardinals are saying ‘who will be the next?’ For the moment we are here completely for Francis.”
