Over 600 service members will participate in Jaded Thunder
a comprehensive joint-service training exercise
The airport authority said the Salina Regional Airport’s proximity to the Smoky Hill Weapons Range offers a key strategic advantage for advanced training
The airport allows minimal transit for military aircraft and maximizes training hours over the range in coordination with ground forces
“The combination of the Smoky Hill Weapons Range and the Salina Regional Airport provides unmatched access for realistic training scenarios,” said Pieter Miller
Executive Director of the Salina Airport Authority
“The continued support from the local community also plays a vital role in making this location ideal for military readiness exercises.”
Residents may notice increased aircraft activity and occasional noise from the range as military units conduct training operations
The Salina Air Traffic Control Tower will oversee all flight operations to ensure the airspace is utilized safely
— The New York State Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to an upcoming lane closure
The Department of Transportation said Interstate 81 Northbound will be reduced to one lane between the on-ramp to I-81 Northbound from East Taft Road to Exit 29S (481 South/DeWitt) in the Towns of Salina and Cicero from 6 a.m
The lane closure is for the installation of overhead signs as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project
All construction is weather-dependent and subject to change
