excellent pitching performance in a surprise start and also drove in a run as Warren Central beat Saltillo 3-2 in the deciding Game 3 of their first-round MHSAA Class 6A softball playoff series on Monday Two of the three games in the series were decided by one run The winning team scored three runs in all three games “It feels good,” Warren Central coach Brian Ellis said We did a good job staying on it and giving ourselves opportunities to win ballgames.” Next up for Warren Central (12-14) is defending state champion South Panola (27-2) which is led by the MHSAA’s Class 6A Miss Softball Sadie Bright The best-of-three series will begin Thursday in Batesville with Game 2 Friday at WC and Game 3 back in Batesville on Saturday The Lady Vikes pushed South Panola to Game 3 when they faced each other in the second round last season which gave them confidence heading into the rematch If you want to win a state championship you’ve got to go through them some time.” Ellis decided to roll the dice in Game 3 against Saltillo (9-14-1) by going with his backup pitcher McKay instead of the primary ace Madison Pant Pant started the first two games of the series but Ellis said he wanted to give her some rest and give Saltillo a different look They’ve seen her for 14 innings and she’s kind of worn out “KeKe hadn’t thrown in a while but she’s been working and pitching She’s been spinning the ball pretty good in practice McKay pitched six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits She only walked one batter and struck out four before giving way to Pant who earned a save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning McKay stepped in on a moment’s notice last season when Pant was injured in Game 3 of a first-round series against Grenada and led the Lady Vikes to a win She said she didn’t find out until Monday morning that she would be pitching instead of playing shortstop like she expected “Right before I walked into school he told me that I was pitching,” McKay said After Addie Kesler singled to bring in the first run of the game in the top of the third inning Saltillo had the bases loaded with one out Madison Padgett lifted a fly ball to right field for the second out and Kesler tagged up from third Emily Muirhead fired a strike to home plate to throw out Kesler and get the Lady Vikes out of a big jam Mary Clell Allred caught an infield pop up while runner Cella Dye was halfway between first and second and Allred threw to first for another inning-ending double play “We made some big plays when they got runners on,” Ellis said the Lady Vikes manufactured all of their runs in the third and fourth innings Two errors and a single by Allred set up McKay’s RBI groundout and brought in a run to put them ahead 2-1 in the third Addi Mullen reached on an error and then stole third base before scoring on a passed ball to make it 3-1 Mullen’s run ended up being the winning run Saltillo’s Chloe Skelton blasted a solo home run over the center field fence in the fifth inning Their only other baserunner in the last three innings was Skelton again who was intentionally walked with two outs in the seventh Pant got Avery Holly to fly out to center field for the final out “That was a big deal breaking the ice and get something on the board Keep them off the board and get something on the board,” Ellis said “We did a great job up and down the lineup but then somebody to come in and get a hit We got some hits at the right time today.” Ernest Bowker is The Vicksburg Post's sports editor He has been a member of The Vicksburg Post's MHSAA Class 6A girls soccer North State championship game on Monday Warren Central started the MHSAA Class 6A North State championship game with some shock and awe The Lady Vikes scored two goals within the first five minutes to stun Saltillo but the two-time defending state champions got two of their own late to steal back the lead and beat Warren Central 3-2 in the Class 6A girls soccer semifinals on Monday We came out and punched them hard real quick and they were shellshocked we couldn’t keep up the tempo,” Warren Central coach Jeremy Lawrence said “It’s pretty obvious as the game wore on that they were gaining momentum and we couldn’t hang in there for that long Going from losing 7-0 last year to taking them 3-2 to the last minute Saltillo (21-1-1) advanced to its third state championship game in a row and will face either West Jones or Long Beach on Saturday It beat Warren Central in the semifinals for the second consecutive season Lawrence said he was proud of how much progress his team has made in the year between Warren Central finished this season with an 18-6-1 record and won its second straight Region 2-6A title but you can’t describe how proud you are in that moment to watch them rise to that kind of adversity,” Lawrence said I was scared they were going to say we can’t do this Warren Central took it to Saltillo at the start Just 20 seconds into the game Jordan Polk scored off an assist from Melissa Herrle and about five minutes later Polk assisted Brooke Steed for a second goal that gave the Lady Vikes a stunning 2-0 lead “I think for the first half it gave us everything we needed As we got later on into the second half that adrenaline starts to wear off and you realize how tired you are It drains and drains and drains,” Lawrence said of the hot start it also was kind of a detriment because now we’re riding that high and that high slides off.” Saltillo showed its championship pedigree by regrouping and taking back the initiative Brooke Davis headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute to cut it to 2-1 and the Lady Tigers stayed on the attack for most of the rest of the first half The teams traded scoring chances in the second half until Saltillo finally broke through late Georgia Joshlin was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick which she converted to tie it in the 60th minute Riley Dickens managed to squeeze a pass through the defense to Olivia Miller who wound up with a short one-on-one breakaway with WC keeper Hayleigh Simmons Simmons had made two spectacular saves earlier in the second half but didn’t stand much chance against a shot from penalty kick range Miller buried it to put the Lady Tigers ahead 3-2 with only 13 minutes left in regulation It could have gone either way at that point,” Lawrence said The Lady Vikesz tried to rally in the waning moments of the game but couldn’t generate anything of consequence as Saltillo filled passing lanes and packed in its defense Lawrence said his team’s adrenaline had worn off by that point and was replaced by fatigue I thought about making some subs but the girls that had been playing were playing so incredibly well that it’s difficult to make those choices in those moments to break that chemistry up,” Lawrence said but when it came down to it they (Saltillo) were playing five or six players back and trying to hang in there as long as they could It was a heartbreaking end to an outstanding season for the Lady Vikes They’ll lose seven seniors from this roster and should be a contender for the Class 6A championship again next season Lawrence said he couldn’t be prouder of their stellar effort against an opponent that is perched on the throne of Class 6A girls soccer It’s watching them play on the field and seeing where they were a year ago to where they are today That growth and togetherness that they have is the reward Are you concerned about the Mississippi River exceeding flood stage View Results Saltillo's Warren Central's Central hadn’t been that far in 30 years Coach Greg Head said this year’s success validates the Vikings as one of the state’s elite teams even though they’d been a playoff regular throughout his entire 18-year tenure “I’m proud for the kids because they’ve worked hard to get back up here,” Head said I keep telling the kids we’re playing for respect and that’s how they get out here and give it everything they have We had a good game plan going in here and it worked.” Their first goal came in the third minute when Porter saved a ball along the end line then crossed it back in front to Wescott who tapped it in for the score Duke Esparza was fouled hard by Saltillo keeper Reid Smith just outside the goal box Esparza received a cut on his head and left the game took the ensuing free kick and ripped it into the top right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead and a very satisfying goal “What happened with my brother really made me mad It really encouraged me to put that shot in the top corner,” said Charlie Esparza who scored only his second goal since New Year’s Saltillo tightened things up in the 62nd minute when Cooper Bingham was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick Peyton Weems converted it to cut it to 2-1 The Tigers had another scoring chance a minute later when another foul on Bingham just outside the box resulted in a free kick The Vikings’ defense blocked it and cleared and the attackers put the game on ice down the stretch After Smith stopped two shots in rapid succession in the 65th minute Porter converted on a breakaway chance in the 74th to make it 3-1 Wescott scored the final goal off an assist from Nick Lee in the 78th minute They kept playing and we got out of it,” Head said After waiting a day to begin its postseason softball series Industrial Park Road has been put out for bids The first advertising went out last week and the bid opening is set for Jan “It is a 300-day construction contract so it should be completed by November 2025,” said Pryor Morrow architect William Dexter The design features a storm shelter for employees inside the concrete engine bay The office and living areas are metal stud construction The exterior has brick up 3 feet on the outside to tie the fire station in with other buildings in the area the department’s pride and support of the high school will be on full display “The accent walls inside the living areas will be Saltillo blue as will the tile in the kitchen,” said Mayor Copey Grantham which is very popular in the community.” The big question is will the construction bids come in within the city’s tight $1.9 million budget The bulk of that money comes from a $1.5 million allocation from the state legislature so Grantham has named the station in honor of Lt Another $100,000 came from federal COVID-19 relief finds. The Saltillo Board of Aldermen has approved up to $300,000 in general obligation bonds to cover the remainder “We have two alternates in the bids to try to keep the price at $1.9 million — the circular drive and a sprinkler system,” Grantham said “The drive makes the station look complete and more professional you’re not having to turn around in the middle of the road to back into the bay.” The circular drive is estimated at $200,000 It would allow the fire trucks to drive behind the station and enter through the back of the engine bay preventing the need to back the engine into the bay allowing the city to add the secondary drive at a later date The fire suppression sprinklers cost about $75,000 but require a 6-inch water supply line There is only a 4-inch line serving the area at the moment The $800,000 cost to upgrade the water main would derail the project Grantham hopes to get the sprinkler system installed and use future grant money to enlarge the water line Since the construction business is normally slow in the winter officials are hoping for several competitive bids to keep the project within budget If the bids do go over the budget by a small amount Grantham is willing to go back to his board to ask to increase the bond amount to get the alternates Plus there are ways to get more money,” Grantham said “There are a lot of grant opportunities we can look at.” The scale of the fire station has been trimmed several times since it was proposed more than a year ago Increases in construction costs forced the project to be downsized from the original 10,000 square feet to around 4,000 square feet The original plan called for three large double bays but they are designed to be able to accommodate the ladder truck the department will need in the near future The redesign has one administrative office to be shared by the chief There are two bedrooms that each sleep three That will accommodate the switch in the future from a volunteer force to paid fire fighters on three shifts which will be needed if the department ever has a female firefighter the Saltillo Fire Department has been housed in a 58,000-square-foot former furniture factory That building is 50 years old and no longer suits the needs of the fire department The Saltillo Fire Department is a hybrid with a handful of full-time employees augmented by up to 30 volunteer firefighters the number of full-time employees has grown to six and allows at least one to be on duty 24 hours a day The department has held a Class 6 rating from the Mississippi State Rating Bureau since 2017 one of the things the city would have to do is staff all three shifts with at least three firefighters (c)2024 the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (Tupelo Visit the development for Amazon in the release “We’re grateful for our partnership with the Community Development Foundation and Lee County We look forward to sharing more details about this facility in the future.”  the new last mile facility will help power the last mile of Amazon’s fulfillment process by enabling fast everyday delivery directly to customers’ doorstep Packages are transported to recruiting new companies to our community,” said CDF Board Chair Charlie Kinney in a statement “This investment is paying great dividends now as a global brand such as Amazon has decided to locate here into one of our buildings.” Amazon has invested over $3.5 billion across the state in various facilities since 2010 resulting in the creation of more than 6,000 direct full- and part-time jobs as as a "relief valve" for a U.S truck factory expected to reach capacity in the future Chrysler brand CEO Christine Feuell said Tuesday on the sidelines of a Reuters event in Detroit Asked why that extra capacity wasn’t added in the U.S. and if the Mexico expansion was an effort to slash spending following a new agreement with the UAW Feuell said it was not a cost-cutting move “The plant in adding factory space next to the Saltillo facility for that purpose The Wall Street Journal reported this month that the company, citing unidentified sources and satellite images, is expanding its factory space in northern Mexico to potentially produce Ram 1500 pickups The automaker's production plans have come under greater scrutiny as the UAW is laying the groundwork for a nationwide walkout
