Dan Skelton and Willie Mullins have both earned more than £3m in prize money in British races this season
The battle for the British trainers' title between Dan Skelton and Willie Mullins will go to the final day of the jump racing season at Sandown on Saturday
English trainer Skelton had led the way for much of the year-long season and was more than £1m ahead in the championship - which is based on prize money earned - before the Grand National on 5 April
But Mullins, the first Irish trainer to win the British title for 70 years in 2024, saddled five of the first seven in the big Aintree race, including a one-two-three, to cut the deficit by £860,000
Skelton holds a narrow lead going into the finale meeting at Sandown
where the results of big races are likely to decide the outcome
he was more than £68,000 in front after racing on Friday
but Mullins still remains most likely to win due to his strong Saturday hand
with 10 of the 20 declared runners in the Bet365 Gold Cup where £175,000 is on offer
Last year's winner Minella Cocooner and Grand National third Grangeclare West are in the Mullins squad
Both trainers have runners in the Celebration Chase
although the hot favourite Jonbon is trained by Nicky Henderson
Jockey Nico De Boinville is out injured after a fall and will be replaced by Mark Walsh on Jonbon
Racing will begin 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled to ensure ITV viewers can see the final six races on the card
and there will be updates on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sandown is the final stop in the race to claim the British trainers’ championship
with the destination of the honour set to be decided over seven races at the Esher venue
Dan Skelton has the advantage over Willie Mullins heading into the finale of the jumps season
but Mullins will be mob-handed at Sandown with 21 runners compared to Skelton’s nine
We’ve taken a look at all seven races on the cards, selecting at least one tip for each race using the best odds from horse racing betting sites
There looks the potential for a strong early gallop here with the likes of Serious Challenge
HMS President and St Pancras all ridden aggressively
as well as one of the selections for this contest
The latter only faded late on in a strongly-run renewal of the Imperial Cup last month and, with a number of betting sites offering four places
he looks a big price with his affinity for the track already assured
Give It To Me Oj arrives in good heart courtesy of a canter around Huntingdon in a minor event last week and is perhaps better judged on a fine fourth in Grade 1 company at Aintree earlier this month
Classic Anthem has needed time to fill his sizeable frame
but the evidence suggests he is beginning to realise his potential so a mark of 123 might well be exploitable here
His victory over course and distance in March again confirmed that Saturday’s venue brings out the best in the seven-year-old and it is no coincidence that his run of solid performances have been recorded with Champion Jockey Sean Bowen on board
The talented Pic D’orhy sidestepped an Aintree engagement for this contest and will be fresher than most
Gaelic Warrior served notice on Merseyside that he could become a real class act over a trip and is taken to follow up
The selection recorded some terrific data in picking up Grey Dawning and Stage Star in the closing stages of the Grade 1 Golden Miller last time and looks to possess the rare combination of speed and stamina
Victory for the seven-year-old may have a major bearing on the destination of the trainer’s title
Another Willie Mullins market leader, Kitzbuhel, was as big as 15-2 on some betting apps earlier in the week when his trainer also had Lossiemouth entered
those prices are resigned to history now but he should appreciate the drop in trip and the application of a hood will help after he raced much too keenly in the Liverpool Hurdle over three miles
Some bookmakers may offer three places so each-way backers should research the markets
but Take No Chances is still worth backing as she has performed with great credit at both Cheltenham and Aintree and looks a shade overpriced in the betting markets
Jonbon is unbeaten in all five starts at the Esher venue so is pretty difficult to oppose
especially as he is also seven from seven going right-handed
he is priced accordingly at long odds-on as he bids to complete a hat-trick in this race so it might be prudent for backers to investigate the markets ‘without Jonbon’ and back the returning Il Etait Temps to chase him home as he has previously won following racecourse absences of 208 and 219 days so clearly goes well fresh
With half of the 20 runners in the bet365 Gold Cup trained by Willie Mullins
backers are set a real poser trying to evaluate which of the 10 have the best chances
especially with a number of the contenders having contested Nationals in the last month
Neither High Class Hero or Dancing City have done that and have understandably migrated to the head of the market
but in the hope that Minella Cocooner has recovered from his Aintree exertions he is taken to repeat last year’s success
his saddle won’t slip like it did in the National and he can give Danny Mullins as good a spin as last year
Having been rested since the middle of March
especially as he is 4-6 right handed and goes well on decent ground
Finally, thrill seekers might like to take a small chance with another right-hand track specialist Goshen who is as big as 40/1 on some horse racing betting apps
despite finishing just half a length behind the well-touted Hoe Joly Smoke last time out at Sandown
A couple of my original fancies for this race have sidestepped the engagement so Bunting gains the nod as this trip looks a better fit than the two miles he contested in the Scottish Champion Hurdle last time
He was a little keen early on that day and was hampered by a faller so will need to settle a little better here
but a patient ride could yield a first victory of the season and victory for him over the Dan Skelton-trained Mostly Sunny could be a fitting conclusion given the way the trainer’s title may play out

made his case Tuesday for legislation to have two of the state’s four electoral votes allocated to the vote count in each of the state’s two congressional districts
Awarding half of the state’s electoral college votes based on the showing of presidential candidates in each congressional district would enfranchise more citizens and motivate nominees to return for general elections to campaign in New Hampshire
all four votes are awarded in a winner-take-all format with the statewide election victor taking them
Gannon’s bill (SB 11) would have New Hampshire join Maine and Nebraska in allocating at least some of their electoral votes by the congressional district count
“SB 11 is a step towards a more representative democracy
will encourage presidential candidates to be engaged with our voters and continue our proud tradition of transparent
free and fair elections here in the Granite State,” Gannon told the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs Committee
two electoral votes would be awarded based on the statewide total vote while one each would be given to the winner of the count in each congressional district
Gannon called his bill “bipartisan,” since both political parties would have benefitted from it in the past
then-Democratic Vice President Al Gore lost to Republican George W
Bush by two electoral votes after New Hampshire narrowly went with the GOP contender
Gore would have gotten one vote from the state’s 2nd Congressional District that hasn’t chosen a Republican hopeful since 1988
former Democratic Secretary of State Hillary Clinton edged Republican Donald Trump in New Hampshire
But Gannon pointed out that Trump won the count in the 1st Congressional District
so would have gotten one of the state’s four votes had his bill been in effect
“This is not just a political science exercise; we want everyone’s voice to be heard,” Gannon said
The state senator believes Trump would have returned to New Hampshire to campaign if he stood a chance of winning the vote in the 1st District against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris
“We would like New Hampshire to remain the most engaged state,” said Gannon
Nikki Haley during the New Hampshire primary contest that Trump won by double digits
“Trump didn’t come and campaign in New Hampshire because he didn’t feel he had a shot at it.”
But while Gannon had seven Senate colleagues backing his bill
he was all alone defending it during Tuesday’s hearing
opposed the bill and said the best way to achieve Gannon’s goal of voter representation would be to get rid of the Electoral College
Nebraska officials thought its hybrid electoral vote model would attract both candidates to campaign there
with both Harris and Trump sending their vice presidential candidates and surrogates to campaign there
Harris got one of the state’s five votes in a congressional district while Trump got one of Maine’s four electoral votes in that manner
“They happened to balance out this time; I don’t know where New Hampshire would be,” Tentarelli said
Ken Barnes of Contoocook said this could make the Electoral College system subject to partisan power grabs
“This way of doing it by congressional district could be manipulated
skewed by political gerrymandering and the redrawing of congressional district lines,” Barnes said

It’s been a very long time since anyone has heard the sound of hooves pounding around the big oval Sandown racetrack
The track's final race happened almost 20 years ago when the Randall family that owned the land had 12 acres designated for commercial development and donated the remaining 83 acres to North Saanich for agricultural purposes
That 12-acre commercial land is now the Sandown Park Shopping Centre
and the development of the site has been a huge boon to life on the Peninsula
the North Saanich shopping experience is moving into a new and exciting period in its development as two simultaneous celebrations are poised to mark the latest chapter for the shopping centre
the Canadian Tire store on the site will mark its grand reopening to showcase a significant increase in what they have to offer Peninsula residents
but now we’ve remerchandised the entire store and improved our assortment by increasing the retail space by 25 per cent,” said owner John Cunningham
Canadian Tire is one of the anchor stores at the shopping centre and was the first tenant to open its doors back in 2018
but recent improvements have significantly increased the store’s capacity
“Our customer count is No. 1 in British Columbia and we’re in the top 20 in the whole country,” said Cunningham
“The hope has always been that (this development) will save people the hassle of having to drive into the city
and now I think we’ve achieved that goal.”
In conjunction with the grand reopening of the Canadian Tire store
the celebration will also act as a grand opening of the Sandown Shopping Centre in general
“The 100,000 square foot retail plaza began with Canadian Tire back in 2018
but the construction of a new 47,000 square foot phase has made the centre a hub of the community’s shopping experience,” said Sue Hodgson
North Saanich Canadian Tire’s marketing manager
barBURRITO (Mexican) and Firehouse Subs along with other soon-to-open retailers including Sleep Country Canada
Higgie’s Pet Mercantile and Cheeky’s Cannabis.”
Three retail spaces remain available for lease
ranging from 1,650 square feet to 2,200 square feet
but Hodgson is confident that those spaces will soon be occupied as well
“With the recent completion of this exciting new phase
Sandown Park is a well-rounded and convenient shopping node that is uniquely positioned to service the everyday shopping needs of residents and businesses in the area
as well as traffic along the Pat Bay Highway”
said Kyle Shury of Platform Properties
the development company behind the project
“There was a need for a commercial centre (on the Peninsula)
and even though phase 2 of the Sandown development took a little while to gain momentum
we’re on track now and it’s been great,” said Russ Benwell
one of the principal owners of Red Barn Market
which opened at Sandown in July 2024 and is one of eight stores operated by Benwell and his partners
this is the largest of our eight locations and we’re doing very well
largely because of our approach to the business,” said Benwell
and the hyper-local approach has always been a part of our business model.”
Red Barn is well known for its support of local growers and locally produced products
and their sandwich bar (with the signature ‘tall as Red Barn’ sandwiches) has become legendary
“We’re invested in the community and have always seen ourselves as a farmers market
supporting the community in a way that is unique to our approach.”
The double celebration at the Sandown Shopping Centre will take place on May 3 between 11 a.m
at the Garden Centre parking lot of the Canadian Tire store
Both Q and the Zone will be on hand with live remotes
a dunk tank and a barbecue hosted by Red Barn Market (with all the proceeds going to Canadian Tire's Jumpstart charity to help kids participate in sports)
and the VIJHL champion Peninsula Panthers will be in attendance with the Brent Patterson Memorial Trophy
There will also be a 50/50 raffle for Jumpstart
and the Victoria Humane Society will be in attendance with some puppies for adoption

It is part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for the venue near Esher

but Dancing Gemini (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) is doing a passable impression of last year's miling sensation as he completed the same Doncaster Mile-Sandown Mile double on Friday
Always travelling comfortably in the Group 2 feature under Rossa Ryan
the Roger Teal-trained 5-2 favourite took off passing the two pole and hit the line with 1 3/4 lengths to spare over Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB})
who was returning under a five-pound penalty
who had turned a corner in the Listed contest at Doncaster last month after a winless 2024 campaign which involved a second in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and fourth behind Charyn in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
has either Newbury's G1 Lockinge Stakes or ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix d'Ispahan as options now
“Today shows why we were pitching him into all the top Group races last year
but unfortunately we got a soft summer and I've always said he's not a soft-ground horse,” Teal said
“I was a little worried about the ground here today
as although he goes on it when you see him point his toe like he did at Doncaster it's something else
The d'Ispahan could be an opportunity–we want to get a Group 1 with him–and we have to do best by the horse
I'd love to go to Newbury but we will have to see.”

Rosamund Pike and Sir Anthony Hopkins have been spotted filming scenes at Sandown Park racecourse for a Guy Ritchie film about the British aristocracy
Sherlock star Cumberbatch donned a taupe peacoat and jeans while Gone Girl actress Pike wore a long
suede camel-coloured coat over corduroy trousers and a patterned knit jumper for the Wife And Dog filming on Thursday
Oscar-winner Sir Anthony was dressed in a long brown coat over a blue shirt and dark tie as they filmed outdoors at the Surrey racecourse

British filmmaker Ritchie could be seen chatting on set with the cast members
who also included Lady Macbeth star Cosmo Jarvis
The filming took place as the racecourse hosted the Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day
Wife And Dog sees the filmmaker return to the colourful world of Britain’s high society
which he used for his 2019 film The Gentlemen and a Netflix series of the same name

The film will also feature Happy Valley star James Norton
House Of The Dragon’s Paddy Considine and Succession actor Pip Torrens
who directed the Sherlock Holmes film series starring Robert Downey Jr
also produced the new project alongside long-time production partner Ivan Atkinson
Here we look at their runners on the bet365 Gold Cup card and assess where the title race will be won and lost
1st £20,8122nd £9,5683rd £4,7844th £2,3925th £1,1966th £596
Riskintheground
Riskintheground is a spring horse who arrives in career-best form. He looks to have a great chance to get Skelton off to a flyer, and it's hard to see him not finishing in the money.
1st £45,5602nd £17,0963rd £8,5604th £4,2645th £2,1446th £1,072
Boombawn
The might of Mullins is perfectly illustrated in this race. Hot favourite Gaelic Warrior will be hard to beat, and Skelton will be hoping his old boss Paul Nicholls can help him out by toppling the market leader with Pic D'Orhy. This could be a key race in determining the destination of the title. Boombawn will struggle to get competitive.
Kitzbuhel
Gwennie May Boy, Take No Chances
Kitzbuhel has a strong favourite's chance. Once again, Skelton may need the intervention of Nicholls to keep Mullins out of the winner's enclosure as Blueking D'Oroux has a better chance than his odds imply.
1st £99,6622nd £37,3973rd £18,7254th £9,3275th £4,6906th £2,345
Energumene, Il Etait Temps
Harper's Brook, Unexpected Party
Unless Jonbon spectacularly underperforms, which seems highly unlikely, it will take something special from Energumene or Il Etait Temps to seize the near £100,000 for winning this Grade 1. Energumene was the subject of support on Friday, but surely needs softer ground to be seen to best advantage. The Skelton duo have little chance.
1st £98,4722nd £37,1003rd £18,5674th £9,2755th £4,6556th £2,3277th £1,1558th £595
Hoe Joly Smoke
1st £18,2102nd £8,3723rd £4,1864th £2,0935th £1,0466th £521
Mostly Sunny, Got Grey
It will be a shock if the title hasn't been decided by now
but six of the ten runners for the final race of the 2024-25 jumps season are trained by Mullins or Skelton
Don't be surprised if the Mullins-trained Bunting bounces back to form or if Skelton's Mostly Sunny manages to build on Monday's fluent Plumpton victory
He still looks well treated under a 6lb penalty

Will Brown secured his second Supercars pole position of the season in a wet and wild qualifying for the Sandown 500
With the day interrupted by rain and squally weather
Brown came out on top in the top 10 shootout - a time of 1m10.2549s in the Triple Eight Chevrolet Camaro he will share with Scott Pye in Sunday's race bettering Tickford Racing's Cam Waters
“I knew it would just be who didn't stuff up out there,” said Brown
between one and two there was a lot of water on the road
I knew Chaz [Mostert] would be hard to beat and also Broc [Feeney]
Waters looked like taking the fastest time until he ran wide at the final corner
“It was a bit of a lucky dip really,” he explained
“There were rivers and dirt on the track that we had to work out on the fly
I am pretty happy where we are in a dry car; in a wet car
Anton de Pasquale provided the shock of the shootout by finishing third
having taken to the track first by virtue of finishing 10th in the first part of qualifying
He conceded he almost spun at the final corner before his lap had even started
though he recovered for a second-row berth for him and co-driver Tony D'Alberto
to move up to third is very excited,” said de Pasquale
to have a fast car around here will be quite good.”
Brodie Kostecki took the fourth fastest time in the Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro he will share with Todd Hazelwood with a time of 1m10.5309s
He just edged out defending race winner Broc Feeney (Triple Eight Chevrolet Camaro) and Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford Mustang)
who will share with long-time co-driver Lee Holdsworth
Andre Heimgartner (Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet)
Matt Payne (Grove Racing Ford) and Ryan Wood (WAU Ford) rounded out the top 10
Nick Percat missed out on making the shootout by 0.04s and will start the race from 11th in the Matt Stone Racing Chevrolet
just ahead of James Courtney (Blanchard Racing Ford)
the race will start with the teams' 'main' drivers at the wheel
while in previous years the common practice has been that co-drivers start the race before completing their minimum number of required laps

The historic Sandown Park motor racing track in Australia has been saved for the immediate future after being given a reprieve from the developers
which for more than 60 years has hosted motor racing and horse racing in the same Melbourne suburban location
has had its medium-term future assured after a change in the make-up of the Melbourne Racing board on Thursday
John Kanga was voted in as the new MRC chairman at a special board meeting
after the resignation of former vice chairman Nick Hassett
The board oversees the horse racing activities at Sandown and other Melbourne horse racing tracks at Caulfield and Mornington
Kanga and his new board are opposed to selling the 112 hectare site for the development of up to 7000 new homes in the Melbourne suburb of Springvale
Currently houses are located less than 150 metres from the circuit
These residential development plans had previously threatened the future of the circuit
Sandown has been at the forefront of the sport in Australia since its opening in 1962
Sandown was prominent in the Tasman Series and first hosted the Australian Grand Prix in 1964
In 1968 the Sandown GP winner was Jim Clark
A temporary extension saw the 3.1km track lengthened to 3.88km so it could host rounds of the World Sportscar Championship in 1984 and 1988
The track has also hosted the traditional 500km Supercars endurance race, which was won last month by Will Brown and Scott Pye for Triple Eight
The board changes mean Sandown will avoid the same fate as the Pukekohe Park Raceway in New Zealand
Motor racing activities at the famous Kiwi circuit ceased in April 2023 after owner Auckland Thoroughbred Racing elected to expand its horse training activities
It means that New Zealand was absent from the Supercars calendar in 2023
before returning this year with a new event at Taupo International Motorsport Park
Mullins dealt Skelton a damaging blow on Wednesday when reducing his lead to £24,562 after Paul Townend won both feature races at Perth for the defending champion
but the title will definitely be decided on the final day of the season
who is as short as 1-12 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win the title
has one runner on Thursday and none on Friday
providing Skelton with the opportunity to build his slender lead with 22 runners declared over the two days
The title rivals will finalise their teams on Thursday morning from 38 and 33 entries respectively
and Sandown’s card will build to a crescendo after the schedule was heavily changed
the bet365-backed Celebration Chase and Gold Cup
switched to races five and six of the seven
after ITV had gone off air and potentially with the title race still in the balance
The changes mean the final six races on Sandown’s card will be shown on ITV
Sandown clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said: “Saturday promises to be a gripping end to the jumps season and we wanted racing fans who can’t join us on the day to be able to watch all the drama unfold live on ITV Racing
participants and the teams at Haydock and Leicester
who have moved races to accommodate our changes at very short notice."
who will lead ITV Racing's coverage from Sandown
praised the united approach to ensure the conclusion of the meeting could be covered on terrestrial television
“We’re delighted that everyone has worked together to move things around on Saturday
so we’ll hopefully be able to crown the 2024-2025 champion jumps trainer live on terrestrial television," he said
"With Sean Bowen also being crowned and John Hales being remembered
One of Mullins' longest-serving owners is hoping to play a part in the Closutton charge at Sandown on Saturday as Lombron
is entered in both the bet365 Gold Cup and novice handicap chase earlier on the card
The Roaringwater Syndicate is made up of the O'Leary family
and the late Archie O'Leary owned the legendary King George winner Florida Pearl
O'Leary's son Anthony has kept his legacy going by keeping horses in training with Mullins and he thinks Saturday could be another special occasion
He said: "There is a distinct possibility Lombron will run
so it will be great to be a part of it all
Willie is not sending Lombron over there for the good of his health
"We've been on an incredible journey with Willie all through the years
Willie always joked that my father was his luckiest owner and a lot of people would agree with that
Team Mullins is just the envy of every team
no matter what sport you're watching."
O'Leary has watched Mullins train horses for the family for the best part of four decades and reflected: "Willie is very matter of fact
He doesn't try to bamboozle people with any mystery attached to what's going on
and there is only one winner in every race remember
I think his analysis for when a horse is beaten is what makes him that extra bit special."
He added: "We were at Sandown for the final day last year and it was just amazing to see the whole thing unfold in front of our eyes
It was decided with two or three races to go
and to see the reception Willie got from the Brits was absolutely fantastic
He's not someone who courts publicity and yet the whole crowd seemed to be euphoric about the whole thing."

David Fish was one of those delighted to be contributing to a solid afternoon for Camelot on Friday as Dancing Gemini scored for the first time in Group company in Sandown's bet365 Mile
who with his wife Linda breeds and races under the name Fishdance
has had quite a trip with his four-year-old colt
A close runner-up in last year's French Guineas and sixth to Auguste Rodin in the Derby
he is already twice a Listed winner including at Doncaster last month and stepped forward again here with fine effort up at Group 2 level
coming a length and three-quarters in front of the decorated Tamfana
who was a minor winner for Roger Charlton and is out of Anabaa mare Confusion
"We raced Lady Adelaide and we like Camelot
he's our favourite stallion," said David Fish of what was the sire's 42 individual winner at Group or Graded level
"We breed from him and we've been doing it for years
this stoutly-bred colt appears to have been making his mark over a mile
Fish adding: "His turn of foot comes from the Anabaa line in France."
Dancing Gemini is the first of three foals to have been produced by Lady Adelaide
who paid another visit to Camelot on her most recent cover
with Joseph O'Brien and Dancing Saxon [by Saxon Warrior]
"I think this fellow goes better on good ground; everyone thinks he needs soft ground but he doesn't
There could be another Epsom Classic challenge in store for Camelot as Tattycoram
homebred by Andrew Black's Chasemore Farm and also ridden by Rossa Ryan
got herself into the entry stage through a wildcard from the ten-furlong novice
The sire completed a Sandown hat-trick with Sing Us A Song in the concluding handicap
as good looking a homebred as you'd come across," trainer Ralph Beckett said of Tattycoram
the half-sister to the smart Johannes Brahms
"I thought it was a good effort today
I certainly wouldn't rule out the Oaks entry but whatever we do
we'll do with her best interests in mind."
Camelot's Coolmore neighbour Wootton Bassett was the other stallion able to add to his total through Swagman in the Group 3 Classic Trial
It was the son of Iffraaj's 11th individual Group winner from the sire's first Irish crop and it was his third northern hemisphere Group winner this year
who was working on behalf of the operation
for €170,000 at the BBAG September Yearling Sale and is out of an unraced Galileo half-sister to Group 1 winner Plumania

Star Sports (licence number 009177) is licensed and regulated by the Gambling Commission
I can’t keep going on about the first time I came to Sandown
back in 1985 but it did make an big impression on me
I’ve had a couple of reunions with old pals recently
you wonder when you should have turned right when they turned left
back in 1985 I used to devour Dick Francis books and dream about the life and characters they included
but I have and still have a rewarding working life in racing never really feeling like I’ve worked a day
OK I’d have only been someone Sid Halley brushed past in ‘Odds Against’ but I’ve been part of that world Dick and latterly Felix wrote about and feel extremely lucky to be still in it
misty-eyed self-gratifying trumpet blowing premise over
Star Sports’ team on the rail were Kaan at the helm
This was the first flat meeting of the season I’d attended
though didn’t know what to expect as far as decent punting business went
there was a buzz about the place so hopes were high
1:15 bet365 Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-100) 5f (5f10y)
There was no sign of any bag men or big punters for the opening 5f of the Sandown flat season
there was decent business from off the floor
Bets totalled £1400 with £2000 – £100 each-way on Ardennes the biggest
Kaan had a bet with the Wharton Slaney firm
he took 9/1 each-way the runner-up Brosay which finished runner-up behind the 4/1 winner Queen All Star
The book copped £288 and Kaan an extra tenner thanks to BOG added by Gary Brown and Gerry Chesneaux’s generosity
1:50 bet365 Esher Cup Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-105) 1m
Next up and the money was mostly for Thunder Wonder with notable bets of £2000 – £500 each-way and £1200 – £300 stuck with Star into a book that ultimately held £2166
‘It’s got away’ said Kaan just strides before the long time leader and big loser Thunder Wonder fell into a metaphorical hole
the race looks different when you have one for a lump
led by the 5/2 favourite where it mattered at the post
did sweep past the bogie though he did hang on for fourth
not much consolation for the £500 each-way punter but worth £2286 to connections
it’s just the way the cards fell but very handy none the less
2:25 bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+) 1m2f (1m1f209y)
Star’s head of political betting William Kedjanyi turned up
and why not it’s surely better than Parliament or a polling station
the plunge horse this time was initially See The Fire with a rapid rat-tat-tat of bets totally £600 at 11/4
then bets of £150 at 9/1 on Al Aasy and £200 at 9/1 Ancient Wisdom
right in the hole they laid £2000 – £600 Arabian Crown
which made that a late loser for £460 behind bogie for £1814 See The Fire and they were off
Kaan’s getting them in pluck paid off when 15/2 chance Al Aasy laid early at 9/1 come racing
Despite the £150 bet copping the book still held on to £692 of the £2502 the hod held
3:00 bet365 Mile (Group 2) (Class 1) (4yo+) 1m
and it transpired that WK had blagged his way in
that is a disgrace but fair play to the Head of Political betting but as we know these politics types do love a freebie
Amazing what time surrounded by capitalists will do to a man
The betting on the next was steady but without anything of note
At the off off there was £1660 in the hod apart from £900 – £300 Dancing Gemini
but not with Star had been Haatem with reportedly some decent bets laid
which would have pleased those that laid the lumps
the winner and 5/2 favourite Dancing Gemini wouldn’t have had many in the ring cheering
Star lost £190 largely due to the aforementioned carpet bet
3:35 bet365 Classic Trial (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo 1m2f (1m1f209y)
The next saw two horses backed with Star though there appeared to be lively business all along the rail
Notable bets included £3333 – £1000 and £1000 – £300 I Am I Said and £1800 and £400 Windlord at 11/8
At the off the book held £5569 with the two losers for over £2000
riding for Aidan O’Brien on Swagman didn’t capture the betting public’s imagination but did win the race
it took the combination a while to get past the jolly Windlord but won decisively in the end
4:10 bet365 ‘Wild Card’ Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 2) (3yo) 1m2f (1m1f209y)
and I got a message from professional punter Alan Potts
he’s kind enough to mark my card occasionally when he fancies one
Tattycoram which he said should have beaten Winter’s Song last time
but got trapped on the rail until too late
Winter’s Song opened 10/11 but was virtually unlayable
quickening when challenged to win going away
cheering home a loser in the book used to be a sacking offence on some firms
the winner was owned and bred by Betfair founder and previous #BettingPeople interviewee Andrew Black and now has a wildcard entry into The Oaks
#BettingPeople: ANDREW BLACK
4:45 Nordoff & Robbins Jeff Beck Memorial Handicap (Class 4) (3yo 0-85) 1m2f (1m1f209y)
the firm were in the enviable position of being £6834 in front on the day
Sophie and Kieran rest on their laurels though
then another score because the punter forgot on Sing Us A Song at 9/2
£200 and £90 in rapid succession Gunship at 10/3 among an unusually large number of £50 bets
‘Lots of ‘bullseyes’ remarked Kaan before quipping ‘Let’s hope they aren’t on target’
Late on there was another £300 Gunship at 10/3 adding to his liability
the only loser in the race nudging over the £3600 in a book that held £2798
It looked from a long way out as if Gunship was being set a hard task from the position it was in and so it proved
which was copping over £2000 in the book went odds-on in running but was overhauled close home by Sing Us A Song which had been backed into 4/1 but still won £329 in the book
Gunship came from way back to finish third
that is until a punter had an even £2000 on the favourite in the last as Perth….

The Harry Charlton trainee was usurped in the betting market by Amo Racing's Rock D'Oro (Bolt D'Oro)

and stalked that rival in second for most of this seven-furlong contest
Looming large on the bridle with a quarter-mile remaining
the 5-2 second favourite seized control entering the final furlong and powered clear in emphatic style to register a hugely impressive 6 1/2-length success
Cosmic Year becomes the 35th Rising Star for his sire
whose roll of honour include this year's graduates Chancellor (GB) and Field Of Gold (Ire)
“The ground was too quick for him at Newbury and
I didn't want him to have a hard race today,” explained Charlton

He doesn't have to run again this year and we'll get him home and see what [Juddmonte's] Barry [Mahon] wants to do.”

Andrew Balding’s colt has impressive change of gear and won his only start to date
and the latest renewal at Sandown on Saturday includes several runners with obvious potential to follow their lead
a significant improver when successful at Newmarket last month
is a logical favourite butMatauri Bay and Royal Playwright (3.35) were winners of their only starts to date and Andrew Balding’s colt could have the most scope for progress
He showed an impressive change of gear for a debutant to accelerate three lengths clear of his field in a useful time at Salisbury in July and Balding’s juveniles tend to find plenty of improvement for a run

Murphy was aboard when he won over seven furlong for Balding
last season and this is Glenfinnan’s first step back up to that trip for his current yard

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has today confirmed a provisional all-Chase
six-race card has been created for Sandown Park’s meeting on Saturday 1 February
which will come into effect if the scheduled Hurdle races are abandoned
An inspection will be held by 8am on Thursday 30 January to determine whether the Hurdles course at Sandown is raceable
the fixture will revert to a six-race card will which feature three additional Chase races as follows:
which will be available to view on Racing Admin this afternoon
will close at noon tomorrow (Tuesday 28 January)
and declarations will take place at 10am on Thursday 30 January along with the existing three Chases
If the meeting is able to proceed as originally scheduled with both Chase and Hurdle races
the three additional Chases will be abandoned
This decision has been made both to give the original card the best opportunity to go ahead
and to provide a contingency to support a Grade 1 Saturday fixture on ITV

WILLIE MULLINS has declared an army of superstars for his epic Sandown showdown - including an 'extraordinary' runner not seen for a year
The all-conquering Irish trainer is throwing the kitchen sink at the final day of the jumps season in a bid to overhaul Dan Skelton and claim a second jumps trainer title
Mullins trails his big rival by just under £25,000 at the time of writing with a tally of £3,283,054
But the Closutton boss is 1-12 to get the better of him at Sandown - after forcing ITV bosses into a broadcasting change in anticipation of his crowning.
It's testament to his simply unmatchable strength in depth that Mullins didn't include all his A-listers for Sandown.
To the relief of commentator Simon Holt, Lossiemouth won't take on Lossiemouth in the Grade 2 Select Hurdle - neither were declared.
Here's how the title will be decided in the Sandown showdown
1.20pm bet365 Novices’ Championship Final Handicap Hurdle (£100,000)Willie Mullins: NoneDan Skelton: None
1.50pm bet365 Josh Gifford Novices’ Handicap Chase (£40,000)Mullins: NoneSkelton: Riskintheground
2.25pm bet365 Oaksey Chase (Grade 2, £80,000)Mullins: Appreciate It, Classic Getaway, Gaelic Warrior, Gentleman De MeeSkelton: Boombawn
3.00pm bet365 Select Hurdle (Grade 2, £80,000)Mullins: KitzbuhelSkelton: Gwennie May Boy, Take No Chances
3.35pm bet365 Celebration Chase (Grade 1, £175,000)Mullins: Energumene, Il Etait TempsSkelton: Harper’s Brook, Unexpected Party
4.10pm bet365 Gold Cup (£175,000)Mullins: Grangeclare West, Minella Cocooner, Dancing City, High Class Hero, Lombron, Olympic Man, O'Moore Park, Spanish Harlem, Chosen Witness, Klarc KentSkelton: Hoe Joly Smoke
4.45pm bet365 Handicap Hurdle (£35,000)Mullins: Bunting, Dr Eggman, Jump Allen, King AlexanderSkelton: Got Grey, Mostly Sunny
But Mullins has flooded the bet365 Gold Cup - the feature and richest race of the day - with TEN of the 20 runners.
His domination of the field means Skelton's sole runner Hoe Joly Smoke will be running massively out of the handicap.
Among the other Galacticos to line up will be recent Grade 1 scorer Gaelic Warrior in the Grade 1 Oaksey Chase.
While Minella Cocooner will be back to defend his Gold Cup crown alongside Grand National third Grangeclare West, Grade 1 monster Dancing City, High Class Hero, Lombron, Olympic Man, O'Moore Park, Spanish Harlem, Chosen Witness and Klarc Kent.
we see one big name make a long-awaited return
Four-time Grade 1 winner Il Etait Temps makes his track comeback for the first time since winning the Barberstown Castle Novice Chase at Punchestown on May 2 last year
Labelled an 'extraordinary' horse by his trainer
Il Etait Temps is one of two in the race for Mullins alongside former Champion Chase king Energumene
Both will be tasked with taking on defending champion Jonbon, who will be ridden by Mark Walsh owing to Nico de Boinville's injuries
Mullins won't have a runner in the first two races
While Skelton will field just Riskintheground in the 1.50 contest
The Warwickshire-based handler has declared Boombawn for the Oaksey Chase
where he will be up against the might of Appreciate It
Gaelic Warrior and Gentleman De Mee for Mullins
Skelton has the numerical advantage in the Grade 2 Select Hurdle at 3pm
his Take No Chances and Gwennie May Boy taking on Mullins' sole runner Kitzbuhel
While both have two in the Celebration Chase
with Skelton running Unexpected Party and Harper's Brook against Mullins' Il Etait Temps and Energumene
It all swings massively back in favour of Mullins in the Gold Cup at 4.10pm with his ten runners to Skelton's one
Dr Eggman and Jump Allen - to Skelton's two - Mostly Sunny and Got Grey - in the final race at 4.45pm
