spirit at this year’s FestAbility This free community event is designed to uplift and support individuals with special needs and their families through sensory-friendly entertainment Now in its fourth year, FestAbility has grown into a city-backed celebration that blends fun with purpose Formerly known as “Freedom To Be Me,” the event was rebranded to better reflect its mission of fostering ability “FestAbility is about creating a space where our special needs community feels seen Arts and Events Coordinator for the City of Santa Clarita “From therapy dogs and goats to an adaptive rock wall and inclusive dance performances everything here is designed with intention and even character meet-and-greets like Henry the Octopus from The Wiggles A designated Chill Zone offered a calming space for those needing a sensory break while dozens of community organizations hosted booths and activities But behind the festivities lies a powerful origin story Dena Bogrow, known as FestAbility’s “visionary,” first approached the city in 2018 after finding it increasingly difficult to attend crowded public events like concerts in the park with her daughter who has special needs and is deeply passionate about music “She couldn’t even get to the dance floor at concerts in the park,” Bogrow shared “So I emailed the city with the idea for a more inclusive event so I reached out to friends in the special needs community The event also featured participation from the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department’s Mental Evaluation Team (MET) which shared information with families about alternatives to incarceration when responding to mental health-related calls we’re trying to connect people with the right support,” said Deputy Rene Gonzalez “We want families to know they’re not alone and that there are compassionate trained teams available to help in difficult moments.” Gonzalez emphasized the importance of community awareness and praised the event for opening up those conversations “The feedback has been incredibly positive,” he said Star Wars characters pose at FesAbility event (Sophia Lesseos) organizers reflected on how far the event has come “We’re already planning for next year,” Nocella said It’s about building a Santa Clarita where everyone feels welcome What began as one mother’s idea has blossomed into a beloved city celebration of inclusion and support “If you believe in something and take that first step On Saturday the community of Santa Clarita came together once again for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley joining together in a powerful day of unity The event drew participants from all walks of life and families who walked in solidarity under the warm spring sun While Relay For Life is nationally recognized as a major fundraising initiative the Santa Clarita gathering went beyond just donations…it was a celebration of life “Relay For Life is more than just a fundraising walk it’s a movement to celebrate survivors and raise critical funds to help end cancer as we know it,” said one event organizer attendees enjoyed live music throughout the day A key moment of the day was the luminaria ceremony where candles were lit in decorated paper lanterns to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle each offering information on different types of cancer Relay For Life at an uptick in the number of people applying for a REAL ID — The good news is that DMV’s digital transformation has made it easier for customers to start their application online upload their documents and schedule an appointment which not only saves customers time during their required office visit The California DMV has been sharing information through multiple channels to ensure that Californians know the steps they need to take to get their REAL ID how to find information from TSA about what alternative forms of federal ID can be used for people who have not gotten their REAL ID yet and the Gavin Newsom, as signs indicate he’ll propose additional state cuts to Medi-Cal in a mid-May budget revision for fiscal year 2025-26 — independent of the cuts the Trump administration might make Williams said Newsom could exacerbate, rather than reduce, the harm from the federal government “It could be really catastrophic for these programs and services because it becomes this cumulative and compounding impact,” Williams said “We need the state to be thoughtful — don’t make cuts to the same services that the federal government is trying to decimate.” The county will propose using taxpayer dollars out of the general fund its largest source of discretionary spending to keep its most critical but federally reliant services running at a baseline level Most of the backfilling will go to supportive housing services which will see the steepest federal reduction hit at $24 million in losses followed by the Public Health Department at $19 million Behavioral Health Services and District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s office will also see hits to their budgets and rely on general fund support But Sheriff Bob Jonsen’s office will see no general fund support as his office stands to be least affected by proposed spending cuts under the Trump administration “We don’t have the resources to backfill everything,” Williams said Still, the recommended budget adds 30 positions to Custody Health Services to improve mental health services for people in the county jails Santa Clara County’s federal revenues fall into three main categories government insurance program managed locally as Medi-Cal in California — and Medicare the insurance plan for people with disabilities and older adults Next is money that comes in for social services from a variety of state and federal programs administered by the county including food stamps and foster care programs Both of these categories haven’t yet been factored into Williams’ budget message He said while federal lawmakers are proposing steep cuts to these programs it’s unclear how those cuts will take shape The third and smallest category in the budget is money from federal grant programs established by Congress County supervisors will hash out Williams’ proposals at a series of budget workshops this month “We’re doing the things we can — with the things we can control — so that to the greatest extent possible we are determining our own future,” Williams told San José Spotlight Contact Brandon Pho at [email protected] or @brandonphooo on X Join our mailing list to receive the latest news and updates from our team more potent and deadly fentanyl analog The County of Santa Clara Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed last week that a 39-year-old man who died of a drug overdose had taken pills laced with carfentanil which is said to be 100 times more potent than fentanyl — which itself 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin or morphine The male victim was found in possession of counterfeit M30 pills which are meant to resemble prescription oxycodone "Using drugs alone increases the risk of death We urge people to avoid the dangers of opioids especially fake pills that may contain carfentanil or to tranquilize elephants It is deadly to humans even in the most minute quantities — and we've previously heard that just a couple grains of fentanyl can kill a person who has not developed a tolerance "What I'm really worried about — and the reason I want people to be made aware of this — is because some of the pills that are sold off the street could be potentially laced with carfentanil," Dr. Jordan said, speaking to ABC 7 Carfentanil has not previously been found in the local drug supply in the Bay Area, and this death comes at a time when public health officials are several key initiatives and improvements to transportation infrastructure Among the most ambitious projects is the Sunridge Development which will transform 996 acres of land behind the former Saugus Speedway we’re looking at something even bigger,” Mayor Miranda explained a successful master-planned community in Los Angeles The city’s portion of the Sunridge project will include an advanced sports park and a 3,000-seat amphitheater designed to attract major entertainment acts we can bring in original acts,” Mayor Miranda added “The final plan is expected later this year with groundbreaking anticipated for Spring 2026,” Miranda stated “The project could take up to 20 years to complete ensuring long-term growth for the city.” Old Town Newhall will also see major changes, with a five-story mixed-use building planned for the corner of Market Street and Main Street and underground parking,” Miranda revealed a parking structure is planned near the southern end of Main Street “Smaller than the one on the north end,” said Miranda “Where the golf club building is [it’s] going to become this new development and that’s going to be later in the year.” Hart Park will officially transition to city management on July 1st The city plans to restore its former luster with immediate improvements to clean up the grounds and reopen the historic mansion to the public Long-term plans include a first-class arts and cultural museum Another project in early planning stages is the transformation of Valencia Town Center “We don’t know exactly how that’s going to end up want is we want something akin to a real conference center with a sizable conference center where we can have sizable events.” Miranda said Miranda emphasized that the city is pushing for a venue capable of hosting larger events While these projects are anticipated to bring significant benefits Mayor Miranda acknowledged concerns about traffic and crime And the city’s done a really good job of stopping crime being proactive about crime right from the start.” said Miranda he emphasized continued efforts by local law enforcement and community organizations As Santa Clarita moves forward with these ambitious plans residents can expect a city that continues to grow while maintaining its community-oriented feel “Not everybody is going to be 100% happy with everything that we do as we progress into the future.” were not happy with what you have and are doing to our town I don’t think you’ll be happy until all of our mountains are mowed down Streets are flooded in the mornings and evenings with traffic not to mention our law enforcement are understaffed Is anyone else tired of hearing sirens all day every day Crime is up and you don’t have a handle on it Mr Sixty plus years living out here and this is the worse I’ve seen One of the reason we moved here 20+ years ago was for the small town feel Do you even drive around town and see how congested the traffic is Keep building and making it more congested Leaving California is looking better all the time The traffic is horrendous in Santa Clarita The traffic on bouquet is terrible and that is one small area We will will need an hour to get anywhere in this valley The traffic was terrible after the 94 earthquake from what I can recall I was born here but haven’t always lived here but it used to be nice Things are going downhill the people moving in are horrible too I have new neighbors from Santa Monica area and Chatsworth and they suck don’t pick up trash that they drop have 5 dogs and probably like 5-6 cars on a cul-de-sac Wonderful to think we will get more inconsiderate people There is no mention of bringing big businesses up to Santa Clarita no mention of how they are going to help expand the freeways to get out of Santa Clarita It’s bad enough at 5:30 in the morning they 14 is fully packed and takes 20 – 30 minutes to get from Via Princessa to the 5 freeway It would be nice to have some huge companies come up to Santa Clarita and employee 5 to 10K each We need to borrow Elon Musk for a day to clean out the rotting deadwood in City Hall but all the politicians see is tax revenue coming in The same trap the San Fernando Valley fell into We don’t need a large venue where the mall is located Research what the Parma Town Mall in Ohio did Please put widening Sierra Highway on the agenda and repaving it as far as the city limit on the south side I was 7 when this beautiful area was voting to become a city It wasn’t just about giving all the towns one name to go by because everyone still went by our different towns and only the original town Saugus got wiped out from the Internet and all the different maps I knew as a kid what it meant to become a city It meant they would never stop building homes which meant all the beautiful hills were going to change or disappear Our sheriff’s don’t know how to do real traffic stops Believe me I lived with a police officer who would complain constantly about it They’re also not good at directing traffic when our lights go out at the intersection And do they ever think about the roads or traffic before they expand Sadly I can’t remember how Bouquet once looked when it was just 2 lanes but the widening didn’t come fast enough I mean look how long it took to connect the 5 to the 14 with Newhall Ranch Rd and Golden Valley And they still haven’t connected Via Princess to the other side of Via Princess near Circle Ranch When they renamed San Fernando Rd and Railroad Ave why couldn’t they just have named it all Bouquet Cyn Rd it would have made more sense and city council has never shown any Sure our area didn’t even have a mall until we became a city but this mall has always sucked They didn’t build it as big as Northridge mall The department stores have never carried as much as there We still have to go there once in awhile to find what we need One of the most important things they have always forgotten is what it was like after the Northridge earthquake if you were going to the Valley it was The Old Rd if you were going to Ventura it’s the 126 which at least it’s been widen If you’re heading East it at least has choices Sierra Hwy But do any of these roads have more than 2 lanes? When they built West Ranch area why couldn’t they connect it to the valley? Why haven’t they ever thought to make the Roads before the expansion because they’ll say they need the homes to bring in the money to build the roads! Or how many people moved here in the summer because traffic was nice? Of course it is many people get out of town and make it seem great everyone is trying to find shortcuts to get around the traffic I have always been on the outside of the city limits I don’t know why they didn’t include us but I’m glad because I see the hills are going to be changing at Benz since the one family home is no longer there and they’ve been checking the soil for over a year at least When this town became four different towns and someone said let’s become a city The adults should have run those people outta here! But they were hoping for the goods of a city without becoming like a city That’s why we still went by our town names What was the first thing I noticed when we became a city My parents had to pay for us to be able to receive a trophy for swimming We told our parents we didn’t need a silly participation trophy we earned our medals that was enough They also had to start paying for us to join teams Hart baseball already cost but once a city it went up in cost If only the Mann theater couldn’t have become the Plaza dollar theater since now you can’t even see where the Plaza theater once was The amphitheater I heard was supposed to go over by Magic Mountain They won’t stop building homes until every beautiful hill is gone When I was a kid getting to the freeway was like 10 minutes but then streets needed more lights because people! Now it’s 20 minutes and that’s when it’s not rush hours But they have never cared about really keep that small town feel! They want the Valley well it’s slowly but surely going to be soon enough! Gone like the drive in and our landmark Saugus Speedway and the solutions for traffic mitigation are not beneficial to the existing residents If you go through with even more downtown expansion open up the “resident only” access to Calgrove and Placerita Canyon These were through streets and helped with traffic flow It is not helping matters that the unincorporated areas continued to bulldoze and build Many of the people who live here came for a peaceful relaxed family lifestyle and to get away from crowds City life I don’t know anyone who is happy about this except the people’s pockets being lined and maybe the real estate market and I remember what it was like to have only two major lights I’d rather go back to that than what it’s become Stop building houses in SCV and around it; go somewhere else Yoo are allowing these homes to be built but what about our water supply this city can’t handle anymore more traffic or people To see the meeting agenda, visit here Game Recap: Baseball | 4/19/2025 7:13:00 PM Thanks for visiting Who/What: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical Details: Do you know someone who loves all things Percy Jackson West Ranch Theatre invites you to come see Percy Grover and all the monsters come to life on stage in The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical Rick Riordan’s best-selling Greek mythology book series on Percy and his friends at Camp Half-Blood has been made into movies a television series and a Broadway musical When teenager Percy Jackson discovers he is a demigod he and his friends embark on an epic journey to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt and prevent a war among the gods Where: West Ranch High School Theater – 26255 West Valencia Blvd Contact: Tickets are $11 general admission, $9 seniors/veterans, online at www.westranchtheatre.com or at the door 2025Strong winds and rain slick roads made for a treacherous commute in the Santa Clarita area on Thursday.SANTA CLARITA (KABC) -- Strong winds and rain slick roads made for a treacherous commute in the Santa Clarita area on Thursday Commuters said they were expecting the rain but the winds caught them off guard "My van is skidding all over the place...because of the wind," said one driver just stay inside if you have no business going out." they have the potential to raise debris in the air and the potential issue there is if they make contact with an electrical line or a power pole That could cause a power outage," said Gabriela Ornelas with Southern California Edison the Santa Clarita City Council did not engage in discussion regarding public transit expansion under the Consent Calendar and barely discussed the Sand Canyon Belcaro project which would put more than 300 homes in a floodplain and high fire-risk area The meeting began with a proclamation recognizing National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.  City leaders emphasized inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities within Santa Clarita A presentation provided an annual update on the city’s economic development efforts In the last year, 1,461 jobs across 21 different companies were brought to Santa Clarita Valley, according to Ondre Seltzer, President & CEO of the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation. A major item on the agenda was the awarding of a contract to Model 1 Bus Sales for the purchase of five new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Dial-A-Ride vehicles These vehicles aim to improve accessibility and sustainability in the city’s transportation services the City Council did not discuss this agenda item before approving it as part of the Consent Calendar The council briefly discussed a contract to SWCA Environmental Consultants to conduct an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Belcaro at Sand Canyon project This project site is located east of Sand Canyon Road and the existing terminus of Lost Canyon Road This is 193‐acre site for a new 55+ community with 359 Single Family Units 2.6 miles  of trails and equestrian center proposed To the north of the Project site is the Santa Clara River and the 14 freeway; to the east is vacant; to the south is the Sand Canyon Country Club; and to the west is existing residential development surrounding the project site 55% of property proposed as open space within a Significant Ecological Area overlay zone and Fire Zone Portions of the property are located within a Flood Zone and Liquefaction Hazard Zone will assess potential environmental effects before further development approvals Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste was the only council member to inquire about the contract asking whether SWCA could include specific detailed elements in its environmental assessment the council had little discussion on the matter before moving forward SWCA will play a crucial role in assessing and mitigating potential environmental impacts associated with the Belcaro at Sand Canyon project Their expertise will help ensure that the development proceeds in compliance with environmental regulations while balancing sustainability and responsible land use Several community members voiced concerns during the public comment portion of the meeting regarding two major projects: While these topics were not formally on the agenda the council acknowledged the concerns and indicated that they would be reviewed in future discussions Mayor Pro Tem Weste also brought up concerns about upcoming construction in Old Town Newhall near the KHTS Radio Station The construction stems from discussions about a four-story parking structure that may be built next to the station This project could significantly impact KHTS’s ability to broadcast live and record programs during the day thereby affecting the station’s operations and business Weste suggested that the city provide KHTS with a temporary building to operate out of during the construction to minimize noise disruptions The City Council unofficially agreed to move forward with this plan once construction begins The next regular City Council meeting is scheduled for March 25 For more information, visit Santa Clarita City Council’s official website
