Michael Rubinkam in Pennsylvania; Steve Karnowski in Minneapolis; and Lisa Baumann in Bellingham Efforts to address growing traffic concerns in Santaquin and the Interstate 15 corridor through southern Utah County are moving forward The Utah Department of Transportation commenced an environmental study last year to evaluate how to improve congestion issues at the I-15 and Main Street interchange in Santaquin as well as on I-15 between Payson and Rocky Ridge The study’s findings were presented to residents in a public hearing Thursday night at Santaquin City Hall The plan calls to add additional lanes to I-15 in each direction from Wash Canyon Road in Juab County to Utah Avenue in Payson to address the high volume of traffic the section often can accumulate UDOT suggests widening Main Street from one to two lanes and relocating Highland Drive to the east to open up space for the interchange the preference is to keep the existing diamond layout but to increase the capacity of the overpass and ramps and add a traffic light to both “(Adding) one lane in each direction on I-15 works and serves the demand out to 2050,” said Eric Rasband UDOT’s project manager for the environmental study and ultimately I settled on a very similar configuration to what it is today the Santaquin Main Street interchange was designed to accommodate 12,000 cars per day the interchange handled 18,000 cars per day Santaquin Mayor Dan Olson says the current infrastructure creates safety issues and also impacts the local economy because business owners reportedly view the interchange as a “pinch point” that deters them from developing in commercial areas on the east side of the city the population in Utah and Juab counties is expected to grow by more than 60% by the year 2050 the congestion on a typical travel day extends at least halfway through town it goes all the way through town,” Rasband said that congestion we’re experiencing today is not projected to be observed Santaquin has come a long way in a short amount of time to bring these issues to the forefront When city officials got to work three years ago to convince the state to update the interchange Olson said he was told by the district’s engineering heads it would take 30 years before they could examine the problem ‘Not if I can find a way to get around this he began meeting with legislators who represent portions of the city including Utah House member Doug Welton and Sens With the support of the Legislature and Gov the state put $5 million toward researching the project the transportation commission awarded the project an extra $19.5 million to look at adding a lane on the freeway and UDOT’s study commenced at the end of last year Dozens of Santaquin residents attended Thursday’s meeting to view UDOT’s findings Rasband said there was “quite a bit of support” for the proposals UDOT will address any public comments then hopes to publish a decision document to determine what to do in early 2025 getting funding for the project may take some time “We’re currently programmed out to the year 2030,” Rasband said likely improvements would be after that time.” ‘We’re looking at getting this funded,'” Olson added LLC | www.heraldextra.com | 1200 Towne Centre Blvd Courtesy Santaquin CityThe new Santaquin Bike Skills Park at Prospector View Park opened Aug and Parks) tax were also used for funding Mayor Dan Olson said that he grew up in Santaquin “During the 2021 election process and all the campaigning it was apparent that there were needs for more recreation needs to open a canyon that had been closed from fires that happened in 2018,” he said the road to the Nebo Loop from Santaquin City will once again be open I knew of 120 acres the city owned in the canyon and felt a city park with mountain bike and walking trails would be perfect.” The park was selected by Utah Recreation Parks and Recreation Association as a Facility of the Year in 2024 It has four different skill lines with wide and high banked turns “The Santaquin Prospector View and Mountain Bike Park is built in the canyon in a setting that opens to vistas of the Utah Valley as well as the mountain peaks that surround it The trails are named after pioneer families who prospected the mountains dug the mines and supported their families and built the town,” Olson said “This park is a gem that many will find in the days This park has plans for more and more as we take opportunities to add to it.” Recreation Department Events Coordinator Lindsay Scott said that there has been much encouraging feedback from the community showing excitement about involving children in outdoor activities “It seems that people of different ages have already found value in the park’s activities and have shared their high level of satisfaction with their experiences,” she said Scott believes communities nationwide thrive when the government invests in and focuses on outdoor recreation where there is a strong desire to encourage children to spend more time outdoors and less time on electronic devices “A skills park offers a chance to develop and enhance desired skills potentially evolving into a sport as children reach high school and can participate in a mountain biking team.” SALT LAKE CITY—A slew of power outages has hit northern Utah affecting almost 8,000 a Santaquin police sergeant who was hit and killed by a semitruck while on duty a state lawmaker wants to change how commercial driver’s licenses are issued in Utah The idea for HB375 came about after Sgt “It’s a tragic loss anytime an officer is killed by a deadly weapon which in this case turned out to be a vehicle,” Burton said Hooser was hit and killed by a truck driven by Michael Aaron Jayne Prosecutors say Jayne deliberately rammed into Hooser who had been working at the Santaquin Police Department for about seven years He has now been charged with multiple felonies including murder HB375 would not allow someone to receive a commercial driver’s license in Utah if they have been convicted in the last three years of a violent felony The bill would also require background checks for all commercial driver’s license applicants in Utah “I always bristle at expanding government,” Burton said “but this is a case where we need to do a better job of protecting our citizens and our law enforcement officers from potential violent felons and that’s the genesis of the bill.” The Utah Trucking Association has concerns about the bill told KSL TV he is “sympathetic” to the bill’s intent but he worries about adding hurdles to the hiring process when it’s already difficult to find truck drivers FILE: AAA Utah and the Utah Trucking Association demonstrate the driving techniques car drivers need to safely drive around trucks “We definitely don’t want to hire people who are violent or who would cause trouble,” Clasby said we’re not sure that putting in that requirement makes sense.” Clasby added the situation with Hooser’s death was horrific but isolated “We’re not seeing vehicles – commercial vehicles – being used as weapons as it was in that situation,” Clasby said was relayed to Sundwall “multiple times over the years” but the nurse refused to believe it officers from the Lone Peak Police Department and first responders were called out to a medical emergency at a home in Highland Terry’s uncle reportedly told police in a 911 call that he found her unconscious and struggling to breathe in a bedroom with Sundwall When the uncle asked Sundwall how long Terry had been like that she responded with  “a couple of hours,” the probable cause statement said the uncle described Terry as having “major major health issues” and that “it sounds like she’s drowning,” the affidavit states Sundwall allegedly told Terry’s uncle that Terry had a “do not resuscitate” medical order and did not want to be placed in a hospital nor were any documents that listed Sundwall as Terry’s power of attorney though the documents note that Terry was nondiabetic Terry was taken to a hospital in Lehi where her blood sugar was found to be at a dangerously low 14 A blood sugar level below 40 is considered life-threatening Terry’s family told doctors she had suffered terminal cancer but was getting better Terry’s primary doctor revealed she never had cancer Terry never regained consciousness and was declared brain dead by doctors An autopsy performed showed no cancer or any other health problems A report from the Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed that the cause of death for Terry was an overdose of Promethazine probable exogenous insulin and other drugs The manner of death was listed as undetermined Terry was described in her obituary as a social butterfly during her years attending Lone Peak High School who made many friends some of whom she stayed close with until she passed she and Sundwall had also supposedly been friends A search of their social media accounts showed they both worked for the same disability service provider though it’s uncertain if their tenures were at the same time detectives reported they found more than 20,000 text messages between the two dating back to 2019 some messages allegedly detailed the different ways Sundwall would kill herself if she was Terry and even offered to “help” Terry die “They also discuss Meggan’s money problems being solved by Kacee dying and Meggan receiving her life insurance payout,” court documents allege Detectives said further evidence revealed Sundwall “continuously searched for Terry’s life insurance policy after her death” through calls and emails and she deleted more than 900 texts from her phone which police believe was an effort to hide information from investigators
