(WPMI) — Some Saraland Water and Sewer Service customers are scratching their heads after receiving their latest water bills
The water and sewer service is looking into the issue and believes it could be attributed to two things
One resident who wanted to remain anonymous was billed $1,164 this month
but she says on average her bill is around $68
Some customers received massive bills ranging from $200 all the way up to $11,500
they had made a decimal point error or something
Some customers say they are still waiting for the issue involving their accounts to be resolved
“The only other time I got a large bill like that was a year and a half ago when I had the liner replaced in my pool
My bill was close to that for filling up the pool when they put the new liner in
but it was not even $1,000 for that much water
NBC 15 News received a statement from the Saraland Water and Sewer Service Board of Directors:
“The Saraland Water and Sewer Service (“SWSS”) is aware of recent concerns from customers regarding abnormally high water and sewer bills
The primary cause of these exorbitant bills stems from an error in the SWSS’s meter reading system
some SWSS bills may be higher than usual due to multiple billing cycles being reflected on this month’s bills
If you believe that the amount reflected on your bill is incorrect, please call the SWSS office at (251) 675-5126. You can also submit your concerns to our website at https://saralandwater.com/contact-us/.
The SWSS apologizes for any inconvenience that these errors may have caused and appreciates your continued patience and support during this time while it experiences staffing shortages
The Saraland Water and Sewer Board of Directors meet on the first and third Thursday of every month at 5:30 pm at 233 Shelton Beach Road

he is going to work his hardest to figure it out,” said SHS teacher Chelsea Deese
Deese says she wasn't surprised to see Savell’s scholarship offers surpass the three-million-dollar mark
and he deserves all the scholarships he's gotten,” she said
Savell will graduate from Saraland High School in May of this year
and he applied for over two hundred scholarships to help achieve that goal

Statement from the Mobile Public Library :
(WPMI) — A 35-year-old Saraland man is dead after a standoff Wednesday morning at his home on Ideal Drive
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch says it all began when deputies pulled over Juan Puente
"Our ICAC unit attempted to serve two arrest warrants for child pornography
and they watched the individual leave his home in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Shelton Beach Road," said Burch
Burch says deputies noticed Puente had a handgun within reach during the stop
Burch says Puente became combative and took off
Deputies performed a pit maneuver trying to end the chase but that didn't stop him
Video NBC 15 News obtained shows a deputy firing into Puente's SUV multiple times and Puente driving away
"The guy just wouldn't give himself up," said Derrick Englebert
The video was shot in front of Englebert's business
Englebert says prior to the gunfire he heard a deputy yell "get out of the vehicle" and "keep your hands up." Puente returned home and refused to get out of his SUV he parked in the garage
Burch says hostage negotiators couldn't get him to come out peacefully and the standoff lasted about 30 minutes
and it sounded like the finale of a fireworks show," said Englebert
"He began firing more shots at law enforcement
and law enforcement from multiple agencies returned fire
and he's now deceased in his vehicle," said Burch
Dianne Wright lives next door and took cover with her dog when she heard the gunfire
"It was like three different times that the gunfire was coming from him
but the last go around was when it was like 800 bullets flying," said Wright
Wright described Puente as a nice neighbor who recently repaired her vehicle at no charge
She says he leaves behind a wife and two daughters
you just never know what's going on behind people's doors," said Wright
We found no criminal history for Puente in Mobile County

(WPMI) — The Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared." but even a seasoned scoutmaster of 15 years has trouble being prepared for something like this
"There's still a little bit of understanding
for some of the younger kids in the troop,” says Jamie Currie
“They're still trying to make sense of why someone would want to steal from the Boy Scouts."
From a trailer belonging to the scout troop
the trailer had been broken into and also the little building here on the church property
But Currie says the thieves did help themselves to items the scout troop keeps in that trailer
pointing at the empty slots on the trailer’s interior
Most of what's missing are items that have been used by past and present members of this troop for decades
"There's a lot of stuff in there that predated me,” he says
“So a lot of that stuff is fifty or sixty years old
Currie says the missing stuff had spent a lot of time in the hands of former scouts
Much of that "generational stuff" was emblazoned with the classic BSA emblem as well as the troop number engraved on many items
Adding insult to injury is that the victim here
members of Boy Scout Troop 113 spend a lot of their time not taking
May of the bird houses hanging around town
There are countless people benefitting from Eagle Scout projects
as this small troop produces one of those prestigious scouts just about every year
But perhaps this troop's prized project is retiring weather worn American flags
even providing community drop boxes for those who wish to retire old glory with the respect she deserves
"They may needed it more than us but they didn't know who used it,” says Currie
“which is a bunch of kids learning skills and learning life lessons."
if those thieves had experienced a little Scouting in their own lives
this story would have a happier ending for everyone
"They probably don't watch the Hallmark Channel"
But there is still a chance for a happy ending to this story for Saraland Boy Scout Troop 113
Scoutmaster Currie tells NBC 15 News they've been getting donations and inquiries from other parts of Alabama
donations to help replace those stolen items can be dropped off at Stillwater Church
And if you think you spot one of those stolen items

Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person
The Parker Thundering Herd are 6A State Champs
The first state title was captured with a 28-17 victory over Saraland
Jourdin Crawford was crowned MVP with a dominating performance from his defensive line position
It was the first time Parker had been in a state title game since 1980
scoring on three of their first four possessions
scored the first two touchdowns for the Herd
Parker led 14-0 before Saraland answered with a KJ Lacey to Deshawn Spencer touchdown pass that covered 39 yards
Parker immediately answered with another drive
capped by Na'eem Offord's 15-yard run to make it 21-7
Saraland inched seven points closer just before halftime with another Lacey to Spencer connection that covered 37 yards
The only score in the second half came with 1:37 to go when Offord scored from short yardage to put the game away
"It was meant for us to win," Crawford said amid the celebration
"Like Coach Warren said in the pregame speech
All we had to do was come out and dominate
so it's really crazy right now."
"I feel like we deserve it," Offord said
It means a lot because we're the only city school still going
And for us to be working this hard and bringing it back for the city
Parker hasn't done this in a long time
I'm pretty sure our alumni's happy and everybody in the city's happy."

1-ranked Saraland advanced to its third straight Super 7 appearance with a 47-12 rout of Pike Road in the Class 6A semifinals Friday night in Pike Road
who was a perfect 9-of-9 for 182 yards in the second half
threw TD passes of 11 and 51 yards to Deshawn Spencer and 7 yards to Santae McWilliams for the Spartans (13-0)
2 Parker (13-1) for their second state championship in the past three years Friday at 7 p.m
we’ve lost one and we’ll see what happens this week,” said Saraland coach Jeff Kelly
who will make his sixth appearance in a state championship game
Lacey’s fourth career 300-yard passing game in the playoffs gave the 4-star University of Texas commitment 10,764 career passing yards
leaving him 261 yards away from becoming the state’s all-time leading passer going into his final high school game
Piedmont’s Jack Hayes holds the record of 11,024 yards and Williamson’s Jamarcus Russell is No
McWilliams continued to peak in the playoffs
He also showed his versatility with 7 catches for 97 yards
6 going for first downs and the other a touchdown from Lacey
rolled to his right and lofted a perfect throw to McWilliams just before halftime
“One of the big keys was Santae out of the backfield,” Kelly said
“They were doing some different things coverage-wise and we found some things open with Santae out of the backfield
We’ve been able to find answers and we’ve got to continue to do that.”
No one has had any answers for the Spartans in quite some time – they have the best record in Class 6A over the past five seasons at 62-8 and have never trailed this year
there’s no room for second chances in the playoffs,” Kelly said
“I told our guys tonight – and I’ve told them before – I think they have the innate ability to play their best in the big moments
They thrive in this situation and our guys that we lean on to lead us and make plays
they love the big moment and they love these games.”
Stat sheet: Saraland had twice as many first downs as the Patriots (23-12)
twice the total offense (496 yards to 234) and held Pike Road (10-4) to 2-of-10 on third down conversion tries
The Spartans’ starting defense stopped the Patriots on eight straight third downs … Pike Road’s Ja’Michael Jones ran for 80 yards on 18 carries and scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter … The Patriots’ other TD came on Gunner Gibbs’ 47-yard pass to Levi Kelly in the third quarter after Saraland had a 33-0 lead … Lacey completed passes to six receivers
the Spartans’ all-time record when scoring 40-plus points … 5
straight games Saraland has scored at least 40 points … 30-12
turnovers for Saraland in the last six games or 297 snaps
Coachspeak: “Every time that we’re on the field
we want to go score and we’ve done that at a pretty good clip through the playoffs
We’re playing confident ball and we’re finding different ways to do it.” – Kelly
I feel like we’ve been warming up the whole season and then we get into these playoff games and we play our butts off.” – Lacey

The senior quarterback and Texas signee was named the state’s top high school football player for 2024 by the Alabama Sports Writers Association at the annual Player of the Year Banquet in Montgomery on Tuesday afternoon
Football Award for Saraland after Ryan Williams won in 2022 and 2023
No school had previously won two in a row in the 43-year history of the Award
For Saraland to win all three 6A (back) awards in three years and three Mr
I’m definitely glad to keep that streak going
it’s time to take my talents to Texas and see what I can do.”
flew in Tuesday morning for the banquet and was scheduled to fly back out later in the afternoon
“The kid controls the whole game,” Theodore coach Steve Mask said of Lacey
“I haven’t seen anyone in a long time that completely takes it over like he can
but the performance he put on in the Alabama-Mississippi (All-Star) Game was just unreal

Lacey completed 21-of-36 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns under heavy pressure in leading Alabama to a 35-29 win over Mississippi in Mobile last month
“He had a great week and played extremely well on a field that was full of talented and highly rated guys,” said Saraland coach Jeff Kelly
who also served as head coach of the Alabama team
The thing that stuck out to me in that game was his ability to buy time and create when the pass rush got to him
He was able to move around and do all the things he’s always been able to do with us and create opportunities to throw the football against a bunch of talented guys.”
Lacey also was named Class 6A Back of the Year on Tuesday at the annual ASWA banquet sponsored by ALFA Insurance and the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association
he completed 62 percent of his passes in 2024 for 3,042 yards and 40 touchdowns in leading the Spartans to a third straight Class 6A title game
“He’s been an absolute joy to coach,” Kelly said
“The physical ability and the physical talent that he has is unlike anything I’ve ever seen
He has the creative ability to make something out of nothing
He has the football IQ to really dissect a defense and do a great job of having a plan of how to attack and the ability to be really accurate
All that is unlike anything I’ve ever coached.”
Saraland went 41-3 in Lacey’s three years as the starting quarterback and played in three straight 6A title games
He finished second in career passing yards in AHSAA history behind only Piedmont’s Jack Hayes with 10,985 yards
his ability to make everyone around him better – I think will be what allows him to continue to do great things while playing quarterback,” Kelly said
“I’ve never seen him in a situation where he’s stressed or where the moment seemed too big
He has the ability to be his best in those pressure-packed moments and has the ability to slow down the game and make the big plays at the big time
cool and collected and that rubs off on everyone around him.”
Coaches and scouts have long compared Lacey’s style to that of former Alabama QB and current Carolina Panther Bryce Young
He’s like a point guard out there who distributes the ball so well,” said David Morris
but he can do that and he may be at his most dangerous when a play breaks down a little and he has to improvise.”
Elba senior and Auburn signee Alvin Henderson was named Class 1A Back of the Year for the third straight season
The Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year rushed for 3,620 yards and 61 touchdowns and became the state’s all-time leading rusher with 10,894 yards
Fellow Auburn signees Anquon Fegans (7A Back), Jared Smith (7A Lineman), Jourdin Crawford (6A Lineman) and Jakaleb Faulk (2A Lineman) also were winners.
Fegans and Crawford were all named to the Super All-State team
the top 12 players in the state regardless of class or position
They were joined by Jackson’s Landon Duckworth and EJ Crowell
Tuscaloosa Academy’s Preston Lancaster and St
1,265 players were nominated for All-State consideration from 267 schools
