Utah (KUTV) — A former detective said officers with the Saratoga Springs Police Department are likely focused on "emotional connections" between the mother and son killed in their own home
"Murders are seldom if ever random," said Dave Bahde
who once was a lieutenant over an investigation unit at a Wasatch Front police department
"They're [murders] also typically emotional
so there's some sort of emotional tie to someone or something."
It's been a week since the body of eight-year-old Eli Painter was found in the townhouse he lived in with his mother
Lyman was found in critical condition and was rushed to a hospital
Police said both were victims of an "apparent shooting," but investigators have released very little additional information — and declined an on-camera interview request on Thursday
2News sent a list of questions to a spokesperson for the police department:
Saratoga Springs spokesperson AnnElise' Harrison said only that "police are still making progress in the investigation."
Investigators have not said if there is a suspect or a person of interest
"I'm sure they're following every lead they can that puts those connections together," Bahde said

— A family of seven is forced out of their rental home after Tropical Storm Debby flooded it last week
and their five children rented a home in Sarasota Springs near Phillippi Creek for the past four years
"We ended up with about 7 inches at the deepest part of our house
they had about 18 inches," said Eric Hoskins
Hoskins said his family had renter's insurance
but it did not cover the contents of the rental property
Hoskins said his family spent a week in a hotel before a local family offered them a place to stay for a few months
Friends started a GoFundMe page to help the family replace their belongings
"We’ve had some really good friends who actually started a GoFundMe for us and several others who just stepped up and see the need and met it in whatever ways they’ve been able
The community around us has been really supportive
really encouraging as I imagine has been happening all across Sarasota in the last week," said Hoskins
but it does not cover the contents of her home
She said her husband lost all of his power tools he needed for work. The family started a GoFundMe page to help Eva and her husband
"The flood insurance is supposed to cover the house
Sarasota County officials said staff was in the neighborhoods on Monday and this past weekend
They're looking at the drainage system near Phillippi Creek and better understand the duration and level of flooding seen during Debby
"We had staff on site today and through the past weekend looking at the entire drainage system to identify any root causes that we can find to help us understand the level of flooding and duration of flooding along the Phillippi Creek drainage areas," said Public Works Director Spencer Anderson
you see the contents of everyone’s homes just lining the street because it’s all been ruined," said Hoskins
Hoskins said his family is grateful for the community's help
"I would say it’s taught our family a lot about the things that really matter
and so watching my daughters sort of walk through this first real season of loss for themselves
they’ve really held on to the things that mattered
and I feel like that's part of where the system failed"

A long-awaited revamp to a local landmark finally saw golden shovels hit the dirt last week, as the redesigned Sarasota Bath & Racquet Residences & Club broke ground April 9
launching construction on a mixed-use condominium and racquet sports complex
The ceremonial dig capped years of back-and-forth between the developer
nearby residents and Sarasota city officials as the iconic facility has pushed for a second act
The club’s final site plan includes 256 condos
Fabio Di Prima is the founder and president of Silver Sky Global Capital
one-half of the joint venture that yielded developing corporation Sarasota Springs LLC
Di Prima said responding to community feedback and preserving the history of the club was paramount
“This concept clearly matches the residential demands but also enhances the recreational heritage in a more modern way,” Di Primi said
and more than 70% of the first phase’s units have been sold

Sarasota Springs LLC purchased the 13.4 acres on the 2100 block of Robinhood Street for about $15 million in 2022 — a change of hands that saw the previous owner sell the property after original redevelopment plans fell through
The site lies just behind the Trader Joe’s at 4101 S
The bath and racquet club opened in 1969 and ascended to a top tennis destination
with stars of the sport such as Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova attending tournaments in the 1970s
Its membership reached more than 4,000 at its peak before it closed in 2020
Just as it seemed the new plan — 207 multifamily units with taller buildings shifted farther from nearby residences than the original design proposed — would materialize
the developer sought an amendment that would reduce commercial space by around 70,000 square feet but add 70 residential units
the City Commission approved it by a 4-1 vote
Lucas sold the property to Sarasota Springs LLC shortly after

The project didn’t progress without critics
as nearby residents pushed back against changes in the proposed size and density and proximity to their homes
the developer included larger landscape buffers along the property’s eastern and southern boundaries to increase separation between the club and nearby single-family homes in its new site plan
The club projects its first batch of condos will be ready for move-in at the end of 2026

NY (WRGB) — The Saratoga Springs Fire Department is seeing an increase in call volume and ER patient drop-off times
Officials say it's starting to affect serving the community
“Some of the delays that we have at the hospital are related to the fact that the hospital is just full of patients; they're having difficulty transferring patients to other facilities or getting them home,” said Acting Fire Chief Aaron Dyer
“That causes a trickle-down effect in the emergency department where we bring our patients in.”
Earlier this week the department shared this Facebook post stating multiple instances where ambulances have been occupied with medical calls and administrative staff have had to respond to other calls
“It's not uncommon right now when we bring a patient up to the hospital
we could have anywhere from a 45-minute to an hour-plus wait time to turn the patient over to the hospital staff,” he said
CBS6 reached out to Saratoga Hospital for comment and confirmation on the ER wait times
Dyer says short staffing is also a concern
“So currently we have a staff of 84; we are short one person to be what we consider our minimum staffing,” Dyer added
where we need to be to properly provide the service is another eight firefighters.”
Dyer says budgetary challenges within the city are a factor in staffing shortages
The department started staffing its third fire department on the East side of the city in May
fire department leaders say the addition has helped cut down on response times
The Saratoga Springs Police Department announced Sunday the identities of an 8-year-old boy found dead inside of a home in Saratoga Springs last week and his mother who was critically injured
Police said they responded around 10:15 a.m
Friday to a medical emergency at a home near 1200 Willowbrook Lane where two people appeared to have been shot
The 8-year-old, who has been identified as Eli Painter, was pronounced dead without chance for survival. His mother, who was identified as 44-year-old Jessica Lyman, according to a press release issued Sunday
discovered the victims and then called 911
“stating that she had just seen two individuals who were unresponsive and covered with blood,” Assistant Chief Bill Robertson told reporters in a briefing Friday evening
Both teenagers are the half-siblings of Painter
Police said the teenagers were placed in the care of family members
Lyman remains in the hospital in critical condition
authorities have not indicated who they suspect is responsible for the shootings
officers and detectives from multiple agencies converged on the Saratoga Springs neighborhood as they canvassed the area for any potential witnesses or possible video surveillance cameras
A search warrant was obtained for detectives to enter the townhome in search of evidence
“Persons present in the home and other family members have been interviewed or are to be interviewed,” the press release stated
Detectives said their investigation into identifying any potential suspects is ongoing
and they encourage anyone with information concerning the incident to call the Saratoga Springs Police Department at 801-766-6503

A highly imitated and satirized workout video from TikTokker Ashton Hall was notable for the heavy presence of blue water bottles
BY Grace Snelling
3:54 a.m.: Pour out a cup of Saratoga Water
4:04 a.m.: Work out next to a bottle of Saratoga Water
5:49 a.m.: Dunk face in ice-cold bowl of Saratoga Water
And there’s one brand that’s clearly the winner amidst all of this publicity: Saratoga Spring Water
Viewers were quick to notice that Hall’s routine—which also includes rubbing a banana peel on his face
and eating breakfast seemingly prepared by an in-home chef—featured a disproportionate amount of product placement shots for Saratoga-branded water
the eye-catchingly blue bottle appears in around 25 different shots
Now, dozens of TikTok and X users are putting their own spin on Hall’s ultra-privileged routine. Several influencers have attempted to capitalize on the moment by mimicking Hall’s routine shot-for-shot, including by purchasing their own bottles of Saratoga
Some have been more overtly critical. Makeup artist Matt Bernstein said in an Instagram story that the Hall’s video had an “extreme undercurrent of misogyny,” noting the presence of a woman who appears out of frame to present him with food and water
Saratoga finally responded to the trend with an Instagram post on Sunday telling users
If you must,” and crediting Hall for his video
the brand has yet to truly capitalize on this moment with its own content—a move that seems like the natural next step
given its sudden visibility in the cultural zeitgeist
While Hall’s original viral video doesn’t specifically list Saratoga as a brand partner, it seems probable that the content is sponsored, given that the brand invariably appears in almost all of Hall’s TikToks
Primo Brand executives shared that the brand has grown significantly since it was acquired in 2021
going from $13 million in sales that year to $71 million in 2024
Saratoga did not immediately respond to Fast Company’s request for more information on how the recent trend has influenced sales
The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Apply today.

Hendrickson felt ill around midday and died at Saratoga Hospital that afternoon
The exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed
longtime friend to Whitney and Hendrickson
was with him in the hospital and confirmed his death to the Times-Union.
and Hendrickson had carried on the couple's charitable interests
which included significant support to the backstretch workers at Saratoga Race Course and to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
The couple donated $1.2 million to build a healthcare clinic for the workers at Saratoga
in addition to a pavilion on the backstretch used for the dinners and other recreational activities they had long hosted there
Hendrickson had served as chairman of the museum since 2017 and oversaw its recent renovation
which included an unprecedented multimedia experience honoring inductees to the Hall of Fame.
Hendrickson first met Whitney in 1994 when he was working as an aide to then-Alaska Gov
who asked him to serve as a driver and escort for Whitney at a dinner at a mountaintop restaurant with Hickel and his wife
Whitney owned more than 100 sled dogs and sponsored a team competing in the Iditarod over 1,000 miles across the Alaska wilderness
The two seemed to hit it off despite their significant age difference
so I knew she liked me," Hendrickson would later tell The Saratogian
"'And then she kept coming back to Alaska; I thought it was for the dogs."
Hendrickson worked tirelessly to create and constantly improve the Backstretch Appreciation Program at Saratoga
always giving his wife credit for wanting to do something to support the community working to take care of the horses
It began as a small program in 2008 with a few dinners and movie nights but grew and grew under his oversight
“We wanted the workers to feel a part of the community
We wanted to show them love and respect."
“John Hendrickson was a visionary leader who had a tremendous passion for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame
and racing in general,” said Cate Masterson
“He was truly one of a kind and this loss is immeasurable
The entire Museum board and staff is deeply saddened by his passing
Our hearts are with his family and his numerous friends
“The New York Racing Association mourns the sudden passing of John Hendrickson
Marylou Whitney,“ said NYRA President and CEO Dave O’Rourke
“John was a highly respected civic leader in the Saratoga community who played an important role as Board Chair of the National Museum of Racing
and as an instrumental member of the committee that orchestrated the 150th anniversary of horse racing at Saratoga
John was a devoted philanthropist in support of the Saratoga backstretch community and
played a pivotal role in the construction of the Saratoga Backstretch Clinic
His contributions to horse racing and to Saratoga will long be remembered.”
"John was an original Sustaining Member of the Chaplaincy—a group dedicated to long-term support of our organization," said Chaplain Humberto Chavez of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy
"Demonstrating exceptional generosity
John not only committed to supporting the program
donating the entire amount immediately rather than over several years
John attended the Chaplaincy’s annual brunch
where he witnessed the presentation of the Marylou Whitney Award to honoree Len Green for his dedication to the backstretch community
Green was joined by one of his former students
who is also the granddaughter of Marylou Whitney."It was profoundly meaningful for us that John was present at the brunch
and even more touching for him to hear the audience’s heartfelt tributes to Marylou’s dedication to the backstretch community
"John’s exemplary support has left a lasting impact on our organization and the Thoroughbred racing industry
and his generosity and commitment to the backstretch community will be remembered with great respect
The entirety of the backstretch will mourn his loss."We invite you to join with us as we pray for John’s family
and for the vast network of people and organizations who were impacted by his life and love."Thank you

Day 191 of the morning routine that changed my life 3:50am to 9:30am Sin lives late at night.
4:00am - 8:00am no one’s calling or distracting your productivity.
is a date 18-year-old Sabriah Fausett of Saratoga Springs likely will never forget
she got the opportunity many only dream of: to perform with one her favorite bands
Fausett said she’s been a fan of the alternative rock group Limp Bizkit for as long as she can remember
“My mom played it in the car so often when I was a kid
I started listening to more rock and metal and that type of thing when I was 14
and then I started liking them more and more and more,” Fausett told to the Daily Herald
Late last year, the band announced their headlining 2024 Loserville Tour with special guests Bones with Eddy Baker & Xavier Wulf
including a stop at Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formally known as USANA Amphitheatre) in West Valley City
lead singer Fred Durst threw out a challenge to the crowd to see how well they knew one of the band’s songs off their 2000 album “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.”
“They were just playing the riff for the song
And then he was going around the pit (section) and asking people if they knew what song it was,” Fausett recounted
But she said no one seemed confident in knowing the selection
who was at the concert with her boyfriend and actually knew the lyrics of the song
the guy in front of me and my boyfriend had a bunch of people pointing at me
‘Full Nelson.’ And then he told me to come up onstage,” Fausett explained
A link from a poster on the Saratoga Springs Link community Facebook page shared a video of the experiences
“Are you scared?” Fausett shakes her head no
“Just follow my lead,” he tells her before beginning the chorus
backing Durst up with vocals in front of thousands of other fans for over five minutes
the two snap a photo together as she walks off the stage
“She crushed it,” Durst says as the crowd cheers for what she just accomplished
Fausett described it as a near out-of-body experience
‘There’s no way that this is happening,'” she recalled
The 18-year-old said it also was pretty exciting for her parents to hear about
but some of her closest friends aren’t too familiar with the band’s music
“When I went to work and I was talking to them about it
they thought I posted a picture with my dad,” Fausett said
Limp Bizkit is just one of a handful of concerts Fausett has attended recently
and then I have Korn coming up in October,” she said
She’s not sure if something like that will ever happen again
but for now she’ll cherish the experience of performing live with a world-renowned rock group

visited the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York for his Unreal Unearth Tour
The concert was Hozier’s largest ticketed show in the United States to date
and his enchanting performance proved that the artist can make any show feel personal
a blue light filtered down from the recesses of the venue
He began the show with a slower melody — “De Selby (Part 1),” a gentle
rolling song that shows off his vocal range
Then he launched into the loud guitar and stronger vocals of “De Selby (Part 2),” as the light flared to show his backing band and a larger screen projecting his face to the crowd
The show continued to fluctuate between down-to-earth and more driving tracks
highlighting the tonal range of Hozier’s work
Hozier’s crowd work was endearingly awkward
he would politely thank the crowd for singing along
a habit that made every tune feel participatory and vital to the show
He also specifically nodded to how the crowd had contributed to the popularity of his latest hit
“Too Sweet,” acknowledging the fact that it was his first number-one hit due to its large streaming numbers
Hozier also attempted to work a pun into his show
the invention site of the modern-day mattress,” before muttering
“I’m just fucking with you … ‘springs’ … oh
Jesus,” wincing his way into his next song
Not every interaction was quite as difficult
During the stripped-back and heartbreaking song “Cherry Wine,” he allowed the sprawling crowd to sing back the chorus
a powerful sound when echoed in the SPAC amphitheater
“Can we do that one more time?” The crowd roared with delight
and as camera lights flashed like flames in the dark night and concert-goers crooned the lyrics
Hozier’s bond felt the strongest when he allowed his music to connect him to the audience
making his concert feel close and personal even when the crowd was tens of thousands strong
and choreography also felt most natural when stripped back and focused on highlighting Hozier’s lyrics and voice
Although the lights accentuated the first section of the concert
the rest of the show mostly used lights to highlight Hozier’s backing band when they had different solo performances
The stage design was sometimes more complex
with the main set piece consisting of giant roots that first lowered from the top of the stage during “Francesca.”
The venue’s screens also echoed this imagery by projecting “Unreal Unearth” album art and natural images behind the singer throughout multiple songs
The simple images reinforced Hozier’s lyrical focus on cycles
He stayed relatively stiff throughout his performance
Clad in a trim gray suit and clearly focused on hitting all of the notes in his vocally complex songs
Hozier seemed to take care to make sure every song was able to tell its unique story
as the true marvel of a Hozier show is his ability to make even his greatest hits feel like a fresh tale told directly to each audience member
Hozier also made his lyrics truly hit home by accompanying his songs with more direct messaging
during “Take Me to Church,” a song that Hozier has long associated with his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights
he draped a pride flag over his microphone
Hozier took a moment to acknowledge the meaning of his song “Nina Cried Power.”
He explained that he was inspired to write the song by the strength of the civil rights movement in the United States
and in turn hoped that the song would inspire empathy in others and highlight his support of women’s rights
and general love and support amongst mankind
His speech made “Nina Cried Power” feel all the more raw and emotional in the moment
showcasing that these insights into the meaning of his songwriting are an essential part of Hozier’s live shows
Although the Hozier concert at SPAC was not overly produced
it was still a spectacle of lyrical and vocal talent
Hozier’s show at the iconic venue was a testament to his ability to enchant audiences of thousands with music alone

– There could be another weekend of racing at Saratoga Race Course in 2025
if a plan being considered by the New York Racing Association is adopted
Although the racing would take place at the historic upstate facility
NYRA officials said it technically would not be an expansion of the 40-day Saratoga season
the Fourth of July weekend–July 4 falls on a Friday–at Saratoga would be the final days of the Belmont of Aqueduct meet
The Saratoga season would begin on Thursday
That requires state approval,” NYRA president David O'Rourke said
That's one of the things we're thinking about.”
most notably moving the GI Belmont Stakes to Saratoga this year and in 2025
is due to the reconstruction of Belmont Park
the GI Belmont Stakes will be held in 2025 at Saratoga on June 7
NYRA spokesperson Patrick McKenna said that
racing would return to Aqueduct for three more weeks and then move back to Saratoga Race Course for the final weekend of the Belmont at Aqueduct meet
McKenna said that if such a plan is approved to finish the Belmont at Aqueduct meet at Saratoga in 2025
it may be for just one year pending the re-opening of Belmont Park
Although there has been a great deal of speculation in Saratoga this summer that NYRA would stay upstate after the 2025 Belmont Stakes
O'Rourke noted that the field for the GI Belmont Derby this year might have been negatively affected because more of the horse population was already upstate due to the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Festival
Closing the Belmont at Aqueduct meet at Saratoga in 2025 and running the Belmont Derby there might mitigate that problem
“We pretty much have to go back after the Belmont for access to the grass,” O'Rourke said
“There is one race that might be interesting to move up here
because that's the last weekend down there
“What we saw when we went back from a racing aspect is it was great to get a lot of divisions
but some of the higher-quality horses were waiting for Saratoga and might have impacted the Belmont Derby a little bit
but that's a far cry from not going back down south.”

Walt Disney World has resorted to using aluminum foil to “fix” maintenance issues
Only @WaltDisneyWorld can get away with something like this. Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa "repaired" their handrail in their elevator. And yes, that's aluminum foil. And yes, SS is considered a deluxe property. Building 11 for rooms 6101 to 6436. 😬 pic.twitter.com/gdvjUtrTzq

Only [Walt Disney World] can get away with something like this
Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa “repaired” their handrail in their elevator
It looks like Disney removed the rounded end of the handrail
They wrapped aluminum foil around the exposed end of the railing
Simon shared pictures of other handrail ends in the elevator that appear to be significantly worn or rusted
The aluminum foil is likely a temporary fix but still nowhere near the level of “show” we expect from Disney
the handrails will be properly repaired sooner rather than later

The revamped facility will bring 13 outdoor tennis courts and 16 pickleball-paddle courts, with 12 of those being indoors in a climate-controlled, 32,000-square-foot facility. Former world No. 2 tennis pro Tommy Haas is collaborating with the project’s development team, Sarasota Springs LLC, to lead the programming. Akin to golf pros lending their star status and smarts to projects like Soleta
Haas will be involved with the design and will help curate the coaching experience and day-to-day tennis operations
Haas, who has called Bradenton home since 2004, brings a wealth of experience. His connection to the area dates back to his early days at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, where, starting at 11 years old, he trained under the legendary late tennis coach Nick Bollettieri. (The school later became IMG Academy.) Today
Haas is the tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open in California
"My goal is to continue to give back to the game and help the next generation of players," says Haas
whether they aspire to be the best or simply want to enjoy the sport in a world-class environment."
"It’s my first time putting my touch on a facility and making it flow," he continues
staff and amenities to make this place the place to be."
"This is a long-term commitment for me," Haas adds
"Sarasota and Bradenton have a special place in my heart
and I'm excited to be part of this project for the long haul."
The Bath & Racquet Club's redevelopment is not just about sports—it's also bringing a total of 256 residential units
with 33 of those units set aside to be rented at attainable rates for those earning 120 percent or less of the area median income
which comes to no more than $2,715 a month for a two-bedroom unit and no more than $3,136 a month for a three-bedroom unit
The for-purchase market-rate units range from one-bedroom condos starting at $710,000 to three-bedroom units priced at more than $1.3 million
the development will feature 65,000 square feet of commercial and office space
a 7,000-square-foot gym and wellness center
two oversized pools and a two-acre park with a walking and running trail open to the public
park and trail were part of what tipped the scale for Sarasota city commissioners when they voted on the project
which faced some opposition from nearby residents worried about increased traffic and the need for buffering near the surrounding residential neighborhoods
The tennis club will be for members only, but anyone can buy in, says Fabio Di Prima, Sarasota Springs' managing partner. However, it’s still too early to share membership prices. Sarasota Springs acquired the property in January 2022 for almost $15.4 million
Di Prima envisions health and fitness services
healthy foods and services like a pharmacy
Di Prima is originally from Italy; this is his first Sarasota project
“We got introduced to the deal by some people we know based in New York," he says
"They were tennis-related friends who knew members of the old Bath & Racquet Club
We talked to the city and here we are.” Although he enjoys watching tennis
he admits to being what he calls an “entry-level” player
the home I have here is the first house I ever bought and still close to what's now IMG
the original Bath & Racquet Club had long been cherished by Sarasota’s tennis community
including the Virginia Slims of Sarasota women’s tennis tournament
making it a key player in the early development of women's professional tennis with legends like Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova playing on its green clay courts
It was also a social hub for families for generations
a place where locals played tennis and racquetball
