SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (KUTV) — Ring denied an emergency request from Saratoga Springs Police to view doorbell camera video just hours after a mother and son, Jessica Lyman and Eli Painter, were found shot in their own home. Eli, 8-years-old, was dead, and his mom was rushed in critical condition to the hospital, where she later died. In an affidavit for a search warrant, investigator Dallin Cazier said he made the emergency ask of Ring. "A representative called me and declined to send any footage due to a perceived lack of exigency," wrote Cazier. In other words, he said Ring determined circumstances were not urgent enough to release the video, taken from the front door of the place of the murders. Emma Daniels, spokesperson for Amazon, which owns Ring, responded late Thursday afternoon on why it denied immediate video access. ”Federal law authorizes emergency disclosures if a company believes in good faith that there is danger of death or serious physical injury to any person(such as an active kidnapping),” she said. “In this instance, Ring determined this was not the case based on the information provided by the law-enforcement officer.” Neighbor Jason Salisbury pondered if Ring’s initial denial impacted the investigation. “I don't know what would constitute an emergency, if this wasn't,” he said. ”Sounds like the very definition of emergency where this video would come into play,” said neighbor Michael Rose. The discovery of mother and son was on Friday, March 28. Three days later, Ring said it received a warrant for the video and gave it to police on April 7, with Daniels calling that “within a normal response timeline." Investigator Cazier said police had reason to see it sooner. "This video may give critical information to identify the suspect in this case," he said. He noted homeowners in the community shared their videos with police. At least one of those videos, according to Cazier, showed a figure in the morning darkness hours before the discoveries of mother and son. What's on the video from the Lyman-Painter door cam? Police declined comment Thursday. Periods of rain. Low around 55F. Winds ENE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall near a half an inch. Locally heavy rainfall possible. SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (KUTV) — A neighbor who lives several doors from the Saratoga Springs home where Jessica Lyman and her young son Eli Painter were shot said his family's security camera video showed more than one person outside the house in the morning darkness of March 28 — hours before the two were found. Jayden Bradley said he viewed the images and gave them to police. ”We saw four shadow figures walking up the driveway, and up to the car, and three of them went around the front of the car, and one opened the driver's side door, and the car lit up," Bradley said. "Then the other three went around the front of the house, and the camera stopped rolling." 2News asked to see the video, but has not been given access. "Because it was so dark, the first video was really hard to make out who or how tall they were," Bradley said, adding his family had opened windows but still did not hear anything unusual overnight. Meanwhile, some neighbors have discussed a suspected search in or near the Jordan River a couple of days after the discoveries. Police have not confirmed Bradley's account or the river search. It's now been four weeks since the shootings. Eight-year-old Eli was dead when police arrived at the home, and Jessica Lyman died a couple of days later. In a message sent out after the killings, the Cove at Jordan River HOA Board said it was "gathering anything that might have been seen" from the community clubhouse, which is close to the water. "Additionally, we asked that you check your backyards for any suspicious items," the message stated. "If you find anything unusual, please do not touch it. Contact the police immediately to handle the situation. Your cooperation and prompt action are highly appreciated. Let us stand together as a community offering strength and compassion to one another." Nichols, 47, of Ballston Spa, NY, for Grand Larceny in the third degree and Bail Jumping in the second degree.  On February 13, 2025, State Police received a bench warrant for Nichols issued by the Albany County Supreme Court when he failed to appear for a sentencing hearing following a New York State Police arrest on March 28, 2024, and subsequent prosecution by the Albany County District Attorney’s Office.  On February 17, 2025, Troopers received a complaint from a Saratoga County resident reporting a theft. The investigation determined that in October 2024, Nichols received more than $3,000 in payment for a vehicle. Nichols never provided the vehicle to the victim or returned the victim's money. As a result of this investigation, the Wilton Town Court issued an arrest warrant for Nichols on February 25, 2025.  On April 22, 2025, following an extensive investigation into Nichols's location with the assistance of the Troop G Community Stabilization Unit (CSU), Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, and the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, he was located and arrested in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Nichols was transported to SP Wilton, where he was processed on all charges. He was arraigned at the Wilton Town Court on the Grand Larceny 3rd charge and remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail.  Nichols is anticipated to be arraigned on the Bench Warrant and the Bail Jumping 2nd charge at the Albany County Supreme Court on April 24, 2025, at approximated 9:30 a.m.  A Saratoga Springs neighborhood is trying to understand why a young boy was shot and killed and his mother left in critical condition in their home. (Photo: KUTV) SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (KUTV) — A Saratoga Springs neighborhood is trying to understand why a young boy was shot and killed and his mother left in critical condition in their home. Police aren't saying what happened at this point — just that they are investigating. Residents said this is a tight-knit neighborhood, and it's been very somber since the incident on Friday morning. "It is surreal, honestly, to kind of take in," said Michelle Clements, who lives nearby. "It is kind of unnerving just to know that something like that can happen in your neighborhood," said Kristen Brereton, another neighbor, added. Neighbors near and along Willowbrook Lane said this area is usually quiet and full of kids playing outside. Aside from some red police tape sealing the door and doorbell, it's hard to tell that a shooting took place at the home — a shooting that left eight-year-old Eli Painter dead, and his mother 44-year-old Jessica Lyman in critical condition. "I was actually going to do laundry and opened the blinds in my bedroom and just saw, just the response to it," Clements said. "The Facebook group was immediately posting on it and then we walked outside and saw crime scene tape," said Trevan Edwards, another neighbor in the area. The Saratoga Springs Police Department said it was Lyman's 17-year-old daughter who had just come home who discovered the scene and called them around 10:15 a.m. that day. Police said they're interviewing people in the home and other family members — but would not respond to KUTV's questions on Monday. Several neighbors said they had seen the family in passing and said they had lived in the neighborhood for some time. "It's just something that you don't think would happen until it actually happens you know to you or by you or near you," Clements said. "We have a son so that was the first thought too you know, imagine that happened to your child in your house," Edwards added. Police are still working to figure out what happened. They are asking anyone with information to call them. "We're thinking and praying for that family all the time and yeah, just hoping we can band together as a community and support them the best we can," Brereton said. SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (KUTV) — A push to get answers from police and local leaders almost two weeks after a mother and son died in a Saratoga Springs shooting. No suspect has been named, and no details from police about what happened. “We have no idea how it happened, but were super super nervous,” said neighbor Jayden Bradley on March 28th, the day tragedy occurred inside his quiet neighborhood. “Its devastating that something like this can happen in a small neighborhood,” said Bradley. “Which is mostly friendly, something like this happening is so devastating to hear.” Now after a burial of a mother and son shot in their home, a suspect hasn’t been identified. A spokesperson says the investigation is progressing, but police are not talking. “They don’t have a lot of experience working homicides and I suppose you can look at that and say thankfully,” said Greg Rogers, a retired FBI Special Agent. “What the police are doing is a very extensive investigation,” he said. “They are going through all of the media of the family, the phones, laptops, anything, looking for text messages.” He says there are multiple reasons information hasn’t been released yet “They may be very afraid that that person is going to make a run for it if they know they’ve been identified,” Rogers said. After requests were declined for an interview with the police department, KUTV emailed the mayor of Saratoga Springs a few general questions. How has this tragedy impacted police and the community? Police have been conducting their investigation for almost two weeks. people have been saying it’s been a while. what is your message to those who have concerns? “A person who thinks they got away with a murder is out running around right now, that person needs to be caught,” Rogers said.
