Now which will support more than 439,000 jobs over six years is the largest construction program in Illinois history and is one of the largest construction programs in the nation Sauk County has finalized its plans for extending the Great Sauk State Trail and is now seeking federal funding for the project currently begins on the south side of Sauk City and winds up along the shore of the Wisconsin River in Sauk City and Prairie du Sac before heading straight north through the Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area to just south of Devil’s Lake State Park The Great Sauk State Trail runs through Graff Park along the Wisconsin River in Prairie du Sac and features a playground A roughly 27-mile extension through Devil’s Lake ending at an intersection with The 400 State Trail in Reedsburg is slated for construction over the next few years the Great Sauk State Trail would be just less than 39 miles long The proposed 27-mile extension of the Great Sauk State Trail will run along county and state highways and county roads and provide access to four municipalities and Devil's Lake State Park The county’s Land Resources and Environment department released a final draft for the trail’s extension plan on Thursday and is applying for federal funding to cover three of the four proposed extension segments The Sauk County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved $3 million in funding along with an application for a $12 million grant to the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program a federal grant program that focuses on infrastructure for walkways The $3 million is a required 20 percent county contribution toward the $15 million total project cost required for ATIIP grant eligibility county land resources and environment planning and zoning manager said $15 million is the Land Resources and Environment department’s “best estimate” for the total cost of three segments of the extension engineering and construction of the Baraboo North Freedom and Rock Springs-Reedsburg segments Simmert said his department plans to submit the ATIIP grant application in the next three weeks provided support letters for the grant application we met with to ensure what we were putting forth is something that they were comfortable with and could support,” Simmert said adding that the county also consulted the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources The extension would turn the Great Sauk State Trail into an “arterial spine” trail It is slated to run along the edges of Baraboo and Reedsburg and directly through North Freedom and Rock Springs The Baraboo segment would run along Highways 136 and W around the southwestern outskirts of the city and West Baraboo Main trail routes would not enter city or village limits but two proposed spur trails branching off the main trail would enter Baraboo and West Baraboo The proposed Baraboo segment of the Great Sauk State Trail extension does not enter city limits but provides spur trails into Baraboo and West Baraboo Simmert said it was not feasible to run an extension directly through downtown Baraboo It will wind along the south end of the city close to Devil’s Lake The North Freedom segment would run directly through the village with spur trails accessing Village Park and the Mid-Continent Railway Museum An alternate trail route bypassing the village along Highway 136 known as “Shale’s Corner Loop,” is also part of the final plan The North Freedom segment of the Great Sauk State Trail extension provides a route through and around the village A regular and alternate route are also proposed for the Rock Springs-Reedsburg segment Both routes run directly through Rock Springs with the main route continuing along Highway 136 and a rail line towards Reedsburg The Great Sauk State Trail extension's Rock Springs-Reedsburg segment provides a main route directly connecting the village to Reedsburg with alternate routes circumventing large bluffs located west of Rock Springs The alternate route circumvents large bluffs located west of Rock Springs running along Highway 154 and Ski Hill and Golf Course roads before linking back with the main route on Dewey Avenue on the south end of Reedsburg The route would end on Railroad Street before The 400 State Trail At open houses in Baraboo and Reedsburg in October residents expressed concerns that the trail would interfere with pedestrians and traffic The Land Resources and Environment Department is encouraging additional feedback on the final plan prior to its adoption by the County Board in July or August “As part of the design we will be considering elements such as the trail’s proximity to homes and the utilization of landscaping and hardscaping features such as vegetation or boulder features to minimize conflicts,” Simmert said Anyone interested in providing feedback regarding the final plan for the Great Sauk State Trail can contact Brian Simmert, Sauk County Land Resources and Environment planning and zoning director, at (608) 355-4834 or by email at brian.simmert@saukcountywi.gov Simmert said the proposed segment through Devil’s Lake State Park will require extensive discussions between his department and the DNR “That is a much more complicated component of the trail (extension),” Simmert said of the Devil’s Lake segment which also could run alongside a railroad track through the park “There are a couple ways to get through Devil’s Lake.” The proposed route along the railroad track is the DNR’s preferred route An alternate Devil’s Lake route runs straight north along Burma and South Shore Roads Sauik County may pursue grants for the Devil’s Lake segment through the DNR’s Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program a fund aimed at protecting water quality and natural areas Three major Sauk County municipalities — Sauk Prairie Baraboo and Reedsburg — along with Devil’s Lake State Park would all be connected with the trail extension The Great Sauk State Trail is a fully paved pathway with no gravel or dirt segments adding that all four extension phases are slated for full paving Artwork by Ho-Chunk artist Christopher Sweet is on display near the southern terminus of the Great Sauk State Trail in Sauk City “It provides a lot of space for extracurricular activities,” Flynne Sargent “It allows people to do stuff year-round.” Flynne Sargent of Prairie du Sac bikes along the Great Sauk State Trail in the village on Thursday afternoon Sauk County is applying for federal funding to extend the trail through Baraboo North Freedom and Rock Springs before ending at an intersection with The 400 State Trail in Reedsburg could provide more educational field trip opportunities for county school students to learn about wildlife and nature The potential economic activity that could be generated from the Great Sauk State Trail extension would eventually outweigh the project’s cost There currently are 24.8 miles of hiking trail and 33.8 miles of snowmobile trail in the proposed extension area Existing trails in the area include the Ice Age Trail Ableman’s Gorge Trail near Rock Springs and Baraboo Riverwalk Simmert hopes that the county will approve the plan at its monthly board meeting on July 16 The Great Sauk State Trail begins in Sauk City and winds up the eastern end of Sauk County Federal funding is sought by the county to extend the trail to the south side of Reedsburg ending at an intersection with The 400 State Trail Sauk County is seeking federal funds to extend the Great Sauk State Trail roughly 27 miles from its current terminus just south of Devil's the village website who hold a 5-1 majority over Mayor Derrick Burgess are poised to hire Hurckes at a special board meeting on Tuesday Hurckes told Patch he didn't know when the vote would take place Hurckes spent 12 years serving as an Oak Lawn village trustee He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Oak Lawn in 2009 Hurckes has been Lipinski’s political director Lipinski lost the Democratic primary for Illinois’s 3rd Congressional District to Marie Newman The Sauk Village, IL, news blog claims that trustees did not convene a search committee before talking to Hurckes, nor was the job posted through South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association calling the hire “politically motivated.” Hurckes said he interviewed for the Sauk Village gig the same tine last year with former village administrator who “involuntarily” resigned after nine months on the job “They asked if I was interested,” Hurckes said Hurckes served during the Oak Lawn Village Board’s most tumultuous years “During my interview I explained the positions I’ve been through,” Hurckes said “I’ve spent 12 years on the Oak Lawn village board being in the majority and then the minority I believe [Sauk Village] is looking for someone to provide leadership.” The news blog also hints of racial tension within Sauk Village directed at the current mayor and former village administrator Everyone’s good ideas are welcome,” Hurckes said Hurckes denied that he had sought the village manager position for Oak Lawn The position has been open since the fall after the former Oak Lawn village manager retired for his supposed involvement in a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a pedestrian Oak Lawn village officials have stated that a search for a new village manager where the police chief is serving dual roles will not take place until after the 2021 municipal election Currently, Hurckes is the part-time executive director for the Village of Summit, which, like Sauk Village, employs the law firm
