DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The ninth annual Savoy Jones Benefit Foundation Golf Tournament teed off Friday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Highland Oaks
bringing together 144 golfers across 36 teams in support of Wiregrass charities and scholarships for local students
Founded in memory of Christopher “Savoy” Jones—who tragically passed away at age 15 during basketball practice in 2013—the event has become a staple of community support in Dothan
This year’s tournament followed a successful charity auction Thursday night that raised $21,000
with final totals for the weekend still being calculated
Participants played alongside a slate of special guests
including former Alabama football stars Tony Nathan
as well as NFL veterans Kevin Jackson and Rob Sims
“My thing is this—Savoy was a loving kid,” said Christopher Jones
“We just want to keep Savoy’s legacy alive… it’s been over a decade
That tells you the kind of impact he had.”
The foundation awards scholarships to seven local high school seniors annually and supports several local nonprofits
Jones said what began as a family mission to honor Savoy has become a growing movement of compassion in the Wiregrass
“I go to every hole and every golfer and tell them thank you,” Jones said
who played running back for the University of Alabama and the Miami Dolphins
said the sense of unity at the tournament keeps him coming back
“You can’t live in this world by yourself,” Nathan said
“Everybody’s going to need help one way or another
the foundation has brought in support from notable figures in both the NFL and MLB
and received signed memorabilia from the Philadelphia Eagles
As the Jones family looks ahead to next year’s 10th annual event

The Yellowjackets star is finding joy in the small things these days — and manifesting some lighter roles
Jasmin Savoy Brown and I are FaceTiming my childhood friend
I’ve just told her the roundabout way I learned about her daily-news podcast Today In Gay: through a lesbian pastor in my hometown in Tennessee
“That sentence just healed something in me
which she produces with a small remote team.)
As we wander the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on a dreary spring Thursday
Brown and I discuss religious trauma and our zodiac signs (she’s an Aries sun
and in between doctor’s appointments and work obligations
she has a few hours to hang out — which brings us to Crown Heights
to drink peppermint tea and look at plants
and it's one of those things that’s the same everywhere but also totally different
Usually I find that botanical gardens are good with their money
but it feels more ethical than going to a zoo
but my partner is the one that takes care of them
I love miniature trees — not just bonsai trees
but any sort of plant that looks like a cute little tree in a pot
I have a memory of this place from my first year in New York
My roommate and I took pictures here during cherry-blossom season
and I was in this preppy outfit and pink lipstick that was very reminiscent of my Southern Christian sorority-girl past
I grew up Evangelical Christian — praying in tongues
I wanted to ask you about growing up religious
How did that impact your queerness and coming-out journey
I wonder if you relate to this: I have two versions of my history in my memory that are both real but totally conflict
I was always praying for my future husband
but I also had this queer memory of being in love with my female friends and being obsessed with drawing boobs in my journal
It's like sleeping Taissa and waking Taissa
and it's kind of confusing to acknowledge that
I came out at 21 in the most Aries way possible
I think I FaceTimed my mom one day and was like
"I have a girlfriend." I was really intense about it
and it was difficult for my extended family on my mom's side
and my dad and his side of the family live in Pennsylvania
I’m grateful and fortunate that I’m starting to make a lot of money in my career — I helped my mom buy a house recently
to turn his house into an artist's residency in Philly
He has this beautiful old home my grandmother bought forever ago for $8,000
and I want to turn it into a place that artists can apply to stay for free
The only rule is that you have to fill the fridge and cook a meal
you can write your book or your album there
I feel like there aren’t enough gathering spaces like that for people
Especially not for people that need them. When you can afford a membership at a club
and you're an artist who just needs somewhere to go to write and find a community..
I love that idea. By the way, I want to ask how you’re feeling more broadly these days — you’re known for doing these very dark projects about trauma and sadness
How do you balance that with finding joy in your real life
I’m in the healthiest place I've ever been
and I think that’s due to a combination of things
I started cold-calling my friends to keep from getting lonely
I was on a walk and I had three different 10-minute conversations with three of my best friends
I think I’m good at accessing those darker places
There was this period of a couple of years where I was testing for so many of them
and it always came down to me and someone else
If someone would just give me the f*cking opportunity
Oh my God, I want to. I feel like it should be me and Hannah Einbinder
Yeah. We've run into each other at parties
That will certainly bring two gals together
But she is very funny and actually very shy
that you need to moderate yourself and step out of that darker headspace
It’s easy for me while shooting to be like, “action, cut,” and switch between crying and not crying. I don't believe in method acting. I think that's dangerous and irresponsible. But when I'm exploring darkness in my work for months on end, I do need to balance that. While shooting this last season of Yellowjackets, I decided to paint
I took art classes at a studio in Vancouver and found a lot of lightness there
Especially with everything going on in the news cycle right now — things just feel heavy
I had an intense panic attack a month ago about the state of the country and politics
"What can I do about it?" I might as well live my life
as anyone marginalized — being joyful is powerful
notably that change happens when 25% of people embrace it
He gave an example of the show Will and Grace
But as soon as only a quarter of the population was actively watching that show
It made me think about how in our current fight for trans rights and human rights
we have just a little way to go until there's actual change
which is why being in community makes a difference in the long run
Your podcast is such a source of queer joy and good news
one of the hosts] and I pitched the show everywhere for three years and no one wanted to make it
Everyone involved has other gigs but is giving their all to this because we believe we deserve somewhere to tune in and hear good things
It was always my goal for the show that we have more good news than bad
I've been sitting on some new stuff because I'm trying to figure out the best strategy for releasing it
I’m really excited for people to see those
It's been a minute since you've released music
This music is much more highly produced than my old stuff
and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next

Do not sell or share my personal information:
Margaret “Peggy” Bernadette Savoy
to Frances Rose Palermo Bennett and Frank Joseph Bennett
Margaret retired as an accounting clerk for the City of Beaumont
She had a great sense of humor and made others feel welcome in any situation
She never met a stranger and would know their life history within the first few minutes
Her children fondly remember her Sunday pot roast or spaghetti and meatballs that she prepared weekly as the family got ready for a Dallas Cowboys or Houston Oilers football game
And she was not afraid to add a heaping cup of sugar to a recipe regardless of how much was required or if any was actually in the list of ingredients
with various game shows and soap operas being her lifelong favorites
She loved a clean house and was constantly picking up after everyone to ensure everything was in its proper place
Even though there were small trash cans in almost every room of the house
as anything you threw away had to be put in the big can in the garage
Don’t even think about putting anything in the kitchen sink
It went straight to the dishwasher or garbage
If you hadn’t read the daily newspaper by late afternoon
you were going to have to dig it out of the trash receptacle
which obviously meant a trip to the garage
She always made Christmas special for her children
making sure Santa delivered the gifts they wanted from the Sears Wish Book
and the house was full of music from her extensive record collection
with Elvis songs and Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree ringing throughout during the holidays
And traditions like having Italian sausage on Christmas Eve and spaghetti on Christmas Day were always kept
Margaret loved her cars and kept them meticulously clean
Her 70s baby blue Buick Electra 225 was a favorite of the family
and she was particularly proud of her last car
While a dietician may not have approved of her choices
she couldn’t take medication without chasing it with a cupcake or blueberry muffin
And she didn’t seem to mind when her boys ate all the Hostess Ding Dongs and rolled up all the foil wrappers from each one to create a ball and held a spirited football game in the center of the family room
Even during times in her life when money and resources were tight
she shared freely and made sure others were taken care of before she focused on herself
She treasured moments with family and friends and her children
and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy
She retired in 2001 and moved to Richardson to take care of her grandchildren
She was incredibly proud of them and their accomplishments
California and Stephen Smith of Washington D.C.; step-daughters
Lisa Gonzalez of Buna and Stacy Guidry of Bridge City; step-son
of Richardson; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband
Savoy’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m
with her interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park
I heard about Peggy’s passing only a couple of weeks ago
She and I worked across the hall from each other at City Hall for many years
Our main topic of conversation was our children
May God grant you comfort and peace as you remember great memories
Peggy and I first met when both worked for Coburn Plumbing Branch
I was so shocked to hear that she passed away
She was a joy to know and always put a smile on your face
I worked across the hallway from her at City Hall
SHE WAS PEGGY TO ALL OF HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS
PEARL AND I WILL MISS OUR LIFELONG FRIEND
I have fond memories of lunches every day with Peggy at the City of Beaumont
I’m surprised she never kicked me out of the house for not cleaning up well enough after myself
I sit here chuckling as I think through all the years interacting with her as I was growing up
I offer my sincere condolences to the family

Asks 24-year resident GINGER MILLS: Why should people who are moving to Champaign County choose to live in Savoy
“Savoy is one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois and a great place to live and raise a family
We are strategically located in the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area
close to the University of Illinois’ main campus
“We have very safe and diverse neighborhoods. According to recent data on neighborhoodscout.com
Savoy is 67 percent safer than other cities in the U.S.
including Champaign (safer than 17 percent of cities) and Urbana (safer than 2 percent)
The fire department has a great Insurance Service Office rating
and recent changes to the staffing model have improved fire response times by 59 percent
Savoy has one of the lowest municipal property tax rates in Champaign County
without separate park district and/or fire protection district property taxes
or many fees common in other area communities
6 percent telecommunication tax and/or stormwater and recycling taxes
green spaces and an ever-expanding network of shared-use paths
the village has received two grants for construction of these shared-use paths
which we hope to receive additional grant funding to implement further
“The village is also enhancing quality of life by addressing drainage issues though implementation of our stormwater master plan
construction begins soon on the Curtis Road Grade Separation and Complete Street Project
this project will improve transportation regionally
facilitate our economic growth and further expand the shared-use path network.”
“There are many reasons for living in Savoy
It has a small-town feel with many housing and senior care options
and it is located next door to great educational institutions such as the University of Illinois and Parkland College
Carle Foundation Hospital and OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center
“The Savoy area has short commute times and provides convenient access to shopping and dining
Savoy transit modes include city and regional bus services
Access is convenient to three major interstate highways
along with several state and federal routes
Parks are abundant within the village limits
Cycling and multi-use paths serve Savoy and connect to the university and surrounding areas
More trails and paths are being built or being planned in the community

The modern Savoy Recreation Center provides indoor recreation options for people of all ages
a Walmart and a very popular and a highly acclaimed elementary school

Village resident Alex Ruggieri asks: What specific plans do you have to attract new businesses and support existing local businesses in Savoy
Savoy resident Landria Seals Green asks: I am concerned about school choice and its impact on our community
particularly since some Savoy students must pass multiple schools before reaching their assigned school across town
How do you see yourself advocating for Savoy families in discussions about school zoning
Unit 4 policies and educational opportunities
Savoy resident Nate Fleming asks: In light of Savoy’s continued growth
do you see us having to establish our own police department and full-time fire department
Savoy resident Walter Rothermel asks: How would the village pay for a potential cost overrun on the Curtis Road underpass project
Would you increase Savoy’s property tax rate
and/or increase the local 5-cent-per-gallon gas tax that was first put into place in 2021
Retired civil engineer Joe Pisula asks: Beginning on Jan
the state will cease collecting the 1% sales tax on groceries
the state will allow home rule municipalities like Savoy to adopt the same sales tax
will you vote for or support a 1% local grocery tax for Savoy
Jill Clifton asks the two candidates: As a resident
I’m concerned about the plans for development happening in our community
particularly in areas with existing fields
How will you ensure that development is guided by the needs and input of residents rather than the interests of developers
Savoy's Sylvia McDermott asks the two candidates for village president: I would be interested in hearing how the candidates envision Savoy growing over the next several years
Asks resident Jared Ellison: Savoy used to have Orchard Days
which provided a chance to bring the community together and to bring others to the village
Do you have any ideas about creating a festival or event to provide an opportunity to celebrate Savoy
In the 10th and final installment of our series taking community members' questions to the two candidates running for Savoy village president in Tuesday's election

ShareSaveCommentLifestyleDiningThe Donum Estate Adds Savoy Vineyard As Part Of Its ‘Stewardship Of The Land’ByJohn Mariani
Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
Donum Estate has added an esteemed Mendocino vineyard called Savoy
The Donum Estate has vineyards in California’s Russian River Valley
Last December its newly acquired Savoy Vineyard in Anderson Valley achieved ROC™ status
the highest level of organic certification as one of the first wineries in Sonoma County to achieve Regenerative Organic Certified® status for all of its Estate vineyards
their stewardship of the land is expanded upon by Vice President of Vineyards & Winemaking
whom I interviewed on the focus of the winery
global climate change and the decrease in wine consumption worldwide
Vice President of Vineyards & Winemaking
Dan Fishman is dedicated to Regenerative sustainability
What exactly is re-generation and how does it differ from organic or biodynamic farming
Regenerative farming is a relatively new category of organic farming that draws on both ancient principles and the latest scientific research in order to try to farm in a manner that is truly sustainable
and results in the farmed area increasing in ecological health year by year
Regenerative farming is particularly important in areas that have been farmed conventionally
as it allows for the soil to come back to life and return to a healthy balance between fungi
Organic farming is the baseline level that must be achieved to be Regenerative; however
it’s possible to farm organically by substituting conventional chemical inputs for organic ones without changing the overall philosophy of taking what you can from the earth for as long as possible
Regenerative farming requires changing to a mindset of working with the land to create a healthy ecosystem in which your target crop can thrive
Biodynamics is also proactive and adopts a similar mindset of working with the land
and a fairly rigid procedure that has not been updated in 100 years
Regenerative eliminates some of the more "mystical" elements of Biodynamics and adds some more recent scientific findings in terms of soil health
there is definitely a carbon capture element that is key to regenerative farming
meaning that our operations are often carbon neutral or even net negative
Obviously the scale is not going to be huge relative to the whole globe
and certainly would become a factor if regenerative is adopted across agriculture more broadly
Why do you think farming a vineyard is different from farming potatoes
One difference is time scale; it takes 3-5+ years to get a vineyard up and going
and once you do you hope those same vines will be producing for 30-75+ years
Another major difference is that fruit and vegetables generally go directly to market without too much further processing
whereas we are processing the fruit in house into wine
Because we control the fermentation and aging process
so all of our farming decisions need to take into account how that decision will affect the ultimate wine
Lastly I would say that wine grapes are much less fungible than other crops; grapes from our different ranches don't even taste like each other
Donum makes mostly Pinot Noirs of note but also an excellent Chardonnay
Savoy is an historic site in the Anderson Valley in Mendocino
Savoy was one of the first Pinot Noir vineyards planted in AV
and possibly the first planted with the intention to sell fruit to winery buyers rather than produce estate wine
it sits at the narrowest part of the Anderson Valley
which results in higher average wind speeds that moderating temperature during the valley's relatively hot summers
there are four unique soil types across the property
each resulting in different vine and wine expressions
Donum makes up to 15 Pinot Noirs depending on the terroir and conditions
Why not just make one you consider the best you can make
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across different sites often don't marry well together
becoming less than the sum of their parts rather than more
This is one reason Pinot doesn't scale well to large productions
In order to make sure we’re showing the best expression for each of our sites
we bottle different vineyards and blocks separately when we feel that they express the best wine
Over time this has led to more different bottlings
when the wines are of equal or better quality blended across multiple blocks
You said that owners of premium wineries are not so worried about a global decrease in wine drinkers
but our experience is that the audience for premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is relatively small to begin with
and those who fall in love with these magical varieties are not likely to turn elsewhere
obviously new customers need to come in over time
and we don't know how global trends will play out in the longer term
Do you believe that Sonoma should try to reproduce the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs of Burgundy
Certainly not in terms of flavor profile; I think that we can look to Burgundy's focus on terroir expression and site-specific wines for philosophical inspiration
but our wines should represent Sonoma and its microclimates
not try to be imitations of wines from another part of the world
“Elegance” is a slipper word when describing wine
What does it mean to you in terms of your own wines
Elegance may be one of those "you know it when you see it" concepts
but to me it is mainly felt on the palate as a type of balance or harmony between the different elements of the wine––fruity and savory
great wines all have a certain amount of density on the palate
it’s relatively easy for that density to slip over the line into over-ripeness and clumsiness
to me the key is to achieve density without excessive weight
and that is what I would mean by "elegance."
Is there still good vineyard land available for purchase in Sonoma and do you have any plans to add to yours
properties come on the market from time to time
but at the moment we are not actively looking to add to our holdings
Tell me how you and Mark work together at Donum
Mark and I mainly work together when traveling
to represent the brand to new audiences across the globe
Back home in California most of my time is spent in the vineyards and at the winery
Occasionally we do have a chance to get together in California to taste through the current releases and wine aging in barrel

Delaware Theatre Company’s latest production
music-infused stage play that immerses audiences in the golden age of swing and the cultural dynamism of 1940s Harlem
Set against the backdrop of the famed Savoy Ballroom
this play doesn’t just tell a story—it pulsates with rhythm
The Savoy orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Brian Whitted and his 10 top flight musicians, was elegantly placed on upstage risers. Curtains opened each time the set change led to the Ballroom. Scenic Designer James Noone is to be applauded for this dramatic innovation
It’s a vibrant and emotionally rich evening of theatre that honors not only the rhythms of the past
but the women who carried those rhythms into the present
Delaware Theatre Company’s creative team has crafted a visually and emotionally compelling world. The set transitions smoothly between the understated living room of the 1980s and the glamour of the 1940s ballroom, using clever lighting and subtle period details. The atmosphere is nostalgic but never sentimental—it respects the past while recognizing the complicated realities these women faced, particularly regarding race, gender, and opportunity.
These are not women frozen in time, but rather individuals carrying the weight of years. Their comments are tinged with both laughter and regret. Yet the play never sinks into melancholy—instead, it celebrates survival, endurance, and the way music and friendship continue to sustain the spirit.
Under the excellent Direction and and even better Choreography of Edgar Godineauz, Stompin’ at the Savoy is more than a history lesson or a musical tribute—it’s a living portrait of five unforgettable women who dared to dance, dream, and defy expectations. Delaware Theatre Company delivers a production full of grace, grit, and swing-era sparkle. For anyone who cherishes the power of memory and music, this show is not to be missed.

Cars wait for a train to pass at the Curtis Road intersection on the east side of Dunlap Avenue/U.S
The Village of Savoy will hold a drop-in open house on the Curtis Road underpass project from 6 to 8 p.m
SAVOY — Community members will have a chance next week to learn more about a project that’s been in the works for quite some time
Clark Dietz and Hanson Professional Services will be present to discuss the project with attendees
Public comment forms will also be offered to those who want their remarks to be part of the project record

Village President John Brown said in late January that construction is expected to begin in 2027
village staff and consultants said that the project’s cost
Savoy has raised $52.4 million from various funding sources
It’s estimated that the work will continue through 2030
“When train traffic is present it blocks emergency response to the east side of the Village of Savoy,” village officials said in discussing the need for the project
the current grade crossing has the potential to present a crash hazard for vehicles traveling along the corridor
not to mention increasing traffic congestion in the area
The construction of a grade separation structure will dramatically improve these conditions and improve safety for our community.”
the project concept also features road reconstruction and improvements along Curtis Road from Prospect Avenue to First Street
The plan includes seeking a temporary easement from Dohme Park consisting of about one percent of an acre along the south side of Curtis Road “to tie a multi-use trail into the existing sidewalk.”
In addition to the other aspects of the project
village officials are seeking public input on the Dohme Park component in particular and whether the Federal Highway Administration should issue a finding that the work would not adversely affect the park

has relied on a single well to meet its water needs
But as the area’s population continues to expand
the demand for clean water is quickly increasing
Local officials and residents agree that action is needed to keep up with this growth
general manager of the Savoy Swords Water System
said the addition of a new well is crucial for addressing the area’s expanding population
The water system serves more than 2,000 people along Highway 190
Soileau explained that the extra well will serve as a backup if one of the current wells fails
I mean you’re always gonna be improving on it,” Soileau said
expressed his relief about the upcoming improvements
“Summer’s our busiest time; we’ll have four
“Having good water is really needed for all these kids and people coming to camp
so it’s a blessing having that good water so close by.”
The new well is being funded through a low-interest loan from the state
part of a federal initiative aimed at improving water systems across the country
The Savoy Swords Water System has received $913,000 in funding
we found out that 49 percent of it is forgivable,” Soileau said
Soileau emphasized that the project is just the first of many improvements planned for the water system
“The community’s growing… so we need stuff like this and
everything is very expensive today so anytime we can get some kind of break like this we’ll take advantage of it,” he said
they just need more capacity; so the extra well—if one goes out—they’ll have a backup,” Newsom said
the project has received a construction bid
and now awaits final approval from the state
Soileau anticipates the new well to be completed by the end of the year

Sparkling Royal Jewels From Around the World
04.05.2025 by thecourtjeweller // Leave a Comment
we’ve got an update on the ongoing battle over Italy’s hidden royal jewels
which have languished in a bank vault since the monarchy ended almost 80 years ago
I’ve got a look back at some of our features on even more jewels from the House of Savoy
including some pieces still being worn today
Who now owns the jewels once worn by the wives of the Kings of Italy
Two descendants of the House of Savoy recently resurrected the question in the press
Royal Pearls of Remembrance for Italy’s Last Crown Prince in Turin
Royals from current and formerly reigning families gathered in Turin for the late prince’s funeral
The mourners were led by Vittorio Emanuele’s wife
Marina wore a suite of floral jewelry set with diamonds and white and black pearls
Queen Margherita’s Musy Tiara: The Incredible, Versatile Tiara that Belonged to the Last Queen of Italy
Vittorio Emanuele inherited some of the jeweled treasures that his mother
used during her time as Italy’s crown princess and queen consort
Among these jewels is a particularly grand
The Savoy Tourmaline Tiara
often their jewels are quickly sold—but not always
The former royal family of Italy has retained some significant pieces
not the least of which is the tiara from the pink tourmaline parure
Museum Week: The Leuchtenberg Fabergé Tiara
This small diamond sparkler features diamonds set in silver and gold
made of pointed arches from which large diamond drops are suspended
which rest on a base that features diamond leaves in its design
The delicate tiara was made by August Holmström
the Finnish-born head jeweler for Fabergé
But while the entire jewel is certainly worthy of admiration
it’s the briolette-cut diamond drops which really make the piece important
The Baden Seed Pearl Tiara
This tiara was first owned by a royal with serious connections: Stéphanie de Beauharnais
was especially fond of Stéphanie; he made her a member of the imperial family and engineered her marriage to the future Grand Duke of Baden
Queen Marie-Jose’s Turquoise Parure
This gorgeous set of diamond and turquoise jewels dates to the 1830s
and its design is definitely typical of the era
The set includes a pair of girandole-style earrings
Princess Maria Pia’s Magnificent Diamond Floral Wedding Tiara
royals from around Europe gathered in the Portuguese resort town of Cascais for a marriage that united two formerly-reigning royal families
Inside the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in the seaside town
the eldest daughter of King Umberto II of Italy
wed 30-year-old Prince Alexander Karadordevic
The Savoy-Aosta Tiara: An Updated Look
Tiaras are special because they’re beautiful works of art
but some of them are doubly interesting because of their royal pasts
one of today’s princesses wears a tiara that came from a royal house of the past
is one of those—it started off with a branch of the former reigning family of Italy
and now it graces the head of a Belgian princess
In Memoriam: The Royal Jewels of Archduchess Margherita
Princess Margherita of Savoy-Aosta was the elder of two daughters of Prince Amedeo
and her mother was a daughter of Prince Jean d’Orléans

it was also the capital’s first ever luxury hotel
Fast forward to 2025 and its innovation continues with a new ‘lobby’ concept which has now been unveiled and includes a decadent new dining spot
The new Gallery restaurant has echoes of Art Deco design
the new interiors remain in keeping with the heritage of The Savoy
Low level lighting and honey hues give an intimate feel
A marble and mirrored bar is The Gallery’s focal point
while painted columns and burnished metals give an opulent feel
Rich honey colours are warm and welcoming; while the room’s heritage wall panelling is enhanced with shadowy murals featuring silhouettes of dancing figures
(The dancers are a nod to the night a daring couple got up to dance at the hotel
sparking the dinner dance craze of the early 1900s.) Furthermore
soft leather seating in burnt orange shades
statement chandeliers and low-level table lighting give a polished aesthetic and are a riff on the property’s Art Deco heritage
Dover Sole Tacos are a highlight on the new menu
The Gallery is the new space where you can book the grand dame’s iconic afternoon tea
which celebrates the traditional mid-afternoon meal with a pianist creating a classic
The space oozes a relaxed lounge-vibe for guests to enjoy the all-day menu
which also references the hotel’s culinary heritage across its smartly edited collection of dishes
the innovative chef at The Savoy when it opened 135 years ago
The starter features delicate white fish with Bacchus grape and hispi cabbage
the same flavours that Escoffier used in his famed Sole Veronique
but you might struggle to hand over any of this delicious dish to your companion
is another nod to the Escoffier’s French roots
you can’t miss the classic Arnold Bennett Omelette
the omelette was first created at the hotel for its novelist namesake in 1929
There are also further crowd-pleasers—from the tomahawk steak and charcoal grilled
organic chicken tikka pie (a culinary revelation) to the stonebaked pizzas made with 24-hour hand stretched dough
for those yearning for a further step back into the past
topped with cream and fancy toppings—does not disappoint
it’s easy for the afternoon to gently segue into evening at The Gallery (watch out for the curtain that falls dramatically behind the bar once evening sets in)
you’ll pass the fun-fuelled Scoff on your way out
The new dedicated scone shop offers a variety of twists on the classic sweet treat—all baked fresh daily
with seasonal flavours appearing on the scone line up throughout the year
You’ll also pass by the final new addition—The Florist at The Savoy
Having led the floral team for almost 15 years
Belinda is responsible for crafting the daily changing displays and elaborate designs for special occasions across the hotel
guests can purchase their own bespoke creations
to bring a little piece of the hotel home with them
Developing the lower level of the building at the corner of DeVilliers and Wright streets for retail was always part of Studer Properties’ initial plans
but the pandemic and rising construction costs made it difficult to get retailers locked in
The menu will offer delicious fresh breakfast
lunch and coffee beverages during the anticipated operation hours of 7 a.m
Dig deeper into Savoy Place: New apartment building, retail space coming to Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood
wandered into a Great Harvest café while visiting Wisconsin and were immediately impressed by the freshness and flavor
They later learned the homemade bread didn’t just taste good
had strict quality standards and wheat that is milled into flour on site daily
which preserves the bread’s nutritional value
When they visited their headquarters later on with the prospect of bringing Great Harvest to Pensacola
Rishy was even more delighted to see Great Harvest employees were hand-kneading dough around the shared table
implementing the from-scratch practices on which the company prides itself
While she plans to have Great Harvest open in July as the first stage of Savoy Place’s retail space
which she hopes to transition into a marketplace and community hub
While other retailers have not committed to a lease just yet
Rishy is in talks with a handful of local entrepreneurs
the lower level could house a wine bar that would also serve tapas
The lower level will also have local goods for sale throughout such as Bodacious oils
pick up your bread for dinner − anything you might want,” Rishy said
“We are hoping it will encourage others to move in,” Rishy added of the Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood
which is how Savoy Place received its name when it opened in 2020
was a famed two-story nightclub that provided a safe space for Black artists
While it was a destination in the 1940s and 1950s for the segregated Black community, the neighborhood declined because of urban flight in the late '60s
leaving the Savoy vacant and in disrepair until it was torn down in the 1990s
The Savoy and neighboring Abe’s 506 Club were part of the “Chitlin Circuit,” a collection of venues for Black artists that attracted greats like Ray Charles
Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong to the Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood
the neighborhood is seeing a bit of a revival with new homes and businesses
Studer sees the area once again becoming its own downtown within Pensacola’s greater downtown
By creating a walkable destination for the Belmont-DeVilliers community where neighbors can shop for fresh produce
gather for lunch or possibly even sign up for an exercise class − it is strengthening the overall fabric of the community
“I would love to see this become a popular area for this section of town,” Rishy said

but that’s not to say it has ever rested on its laurels
as the first purpose-built deluxe hotel in the capital
it has gone through numerous reiterations and refurbishments which have championed change yet celebrated its rich history
The design focuses on modernising the space while remaining true to its heritage
with the glass atrium remaining as an impressive ceiling feature
Atmospheric chandelier lighting will see the dining spot seamlessly evolve throughout the day and into the night
while a new central walkway will allow guests to easily navigate the room
and gold embossed mirrors add a touch of drama
create an aesthetic that is warm and inviting
The new Gallery with design by BradyWilliams
Remaining a crucial part of the dining destination is the afternoon tea service
which sees new innovative menus that will showcase traditional recipes yet give them a modern twist
and put locally sourced ingredients at their heart
Guests will also be able to enjoy breakfast
giving a buzzy ambiance to the lounge area at all hours
The Florist at The Savoy will create stunning seasonal bouquets for guests to purchase as well as continue to supply the outstanding displays found throughout the hotel
The new scone shop will offer both traditional and new scone creations for guests to enjoy with a tea or coffee
With the most recent major renovation at the hotel having completed in 2010 (the three year project cost some £220 million)
The Savoy has now confirmed a new stage of refurbishment of rooms and suites
“as part of a continued commitment to invest in the property and to ensure the best experience for guests”
The first new rooms and suites will be revealed in August 2025
History pervades every corner of The Savoy
with nods to the hotel’s past beautifully encapsulated throughout
One of the treats is taking the original ‘ascending room’—a glamourous red lacquered lift that dates from when the hotel first opened and which was the first electric lift in the UK
it took seven minutes to climb seven floors
you can’t beat one of the 26 Riverside Suites
with their jaw-dropping views along the river
If you can tear yourself away from the mesmerising scenes outside (they get even better as the skyline lights up at night)
you’ll find that the rooms are meticulously put together—from a curated library of books detailing all things British to the well-stocked vanity of beauty items and the Dyson hairdryer (placed in the perfect location at a dressing table with a well-lit mirror—something that is frequently overlooked in even the newest luxury hotels)
Rooms are decorated in either an Art Deco or Edwardian style—although both lean heavily into a British sensibility with timeless appeal
Bathrooms have claw-foot tubs and thick towels
while suites are furnished with antique side tables
This is the sort of hotel where doormen tip their hats to you as you enter
Penhaligon’s has created bespoke Savoy Steam products (wonderfully scented with Tunisian roses
rosemary and incense) and where you will drift off to sleep on an unbelievably comfy Savoir mattress
Luxurious extras that elevate your stay abound throughout: the suites come with personal butlers and compliementary mini-bars
for those interested in the hotel’s history
you can book in for specialised tours with the hotel’s own archivist and learn more about events and how guests
have been among the thousands of A-list guests to call the hotel their favourite place to rest their heads
One of London's most iconic drinking spots
head to Gordon Ramsay’s The Grill restaurant
where you can sit in the same booth as Winston Churchill (it is found in the corner with views across the entire room and close to a hidden exit)
Perhaps one of London’s most iconic dining destinations
it is home to hundreds of years of Hollywood and history
with it being a restaurant of choice for famous faces
from Oscar Wilde to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
riffing on The Savoy’s classics yet giving them a modern twist
The famous Arnold Bennett omelette (invented at the hotel)
has been reimagined into an elevated starter
as the Arnold Bennett Soufflé with smocked haddock and Mongomery cheddar cheese; while one of the signature main courses includes the Beef Wellington with confit Portobello mushroom
the Grand Marnier flambéed crepes become a theatrical table-side experience
Whether you pop in for the traditional afternoon tea in the new Gallery or a glass of bubbles in The American Bar
there’s no doubt that The Savoy’s appeal is found in its timelessness
there is something reassuringly comforting about placing a foot in the past
even if the hotel’s face is looking towards the future
