Texas — Firefighters quickly contained a house fire on Sunday
The blaze was reported at approximately 2:29 p.m
near the corner of Curtiss Avenue and Lindberg Avenue
Crews arrived within five minutes and reported heavy smoke and fire visible at the front of the residence
The fire was brought under control in under 10 minutes
no injuries were reported among the occupants or firefighting personnel
Firefighters also safely rescued three pets from the home
A total of seven fire apparatus and 19 personnel from both Schertz and Cibolo Fire Departments responded to the incident
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
but it is currently being treated as suspicious in nature

Texas – A man has been arrested in connection with a child abuse case
the Schertz Police Department said Tuesday
was arrested without incident Tuesday and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail on a count of injury to a child
disabled - reckless serious bodily injury/mental
Schertz police received a report of an injury to a child “that appeared suspicious,” the release said
The alleged abuse occurred inside a residence in the 4500 block of Union Creek Drive in Schertz
The release said medical personnel initiated the report from North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio
Officers arrived at the hospital and an investigation was launched after speaking with the parents
the release said investigators determined the child’s injuries were caused by abuse
The release did not specify the relationship between Ross and the child
Ross will remain in custody until his bond is set during a hearing scheduled for Wednesday

Timothy Dusek currently leads with 29 percentage points
which is more than the four other candidates in the race
Benjamin Guerrero is the next closest with 22 percentage points
five candidates are on the ballot: self-employed consultant Dusek
retired veteran Tyrone Taylor and Paula Del Toro
Editors note: KSAT initially reported that Dusek was the projected winner of the race
but City of Schertz officials said none of the candidates have received the majority vote
BACKGROUND: In September, Tiffany Gibson, who was elected in 2023, resigned from her Place 4 seat on the Schertz City Council due to health and family reasons
Gibson’s resignation came after the deadline to file for the Nov
The winner of Saturday’s election will serve the remainder of the term
The candidates participated in an online question and answer session to discuss why they are the best person for the job and what the vision for their growing city looks like
Taylor is the only one who has previously sought office in Schertz
Taylor ran in the 2023 election for the Place 3 city council seat

The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m
on March 11 in the 9000 block of Aranda Lane
Schertz police said an altercation started between two residents and a contract road repair crew
and 41-year-old Stephen Patterson shot the other resident in the leg
The shooting victim was taken to the hospital
The victim was released from the hospital and later readmitted due to medical complications
Concho County Sheriff’s Office said he barricaded himself in a home and shot himself after hours of negotiation
He had multiple outstanding felony warrants
Schertz PD said no one else was injured during the standoff
Police said they are still investigating the shooting

He is believed to be driving a green 2006 Z71 with Texas license plate CHF5706 or VVY3659

Texas – UPDATE AT 10 p.m.: The Guadalupe County Early Voting Ballot Board said it has released its final unofficial results for the night
Self-employed consultant Timothy Dusek and contract specialist Benjamin Guerrero went head to head to secure a spot in the Schertz City Council Place 4
the Guadalupe County Early Voting Ballot Board said Guerrero currently leads with 51 percentage points while Dusek is just trailing with 49 percentage points
The winner will serve the remainder of the term
no candidate in the race met the majority threshold of votes to win the seat
which is more than the other four other candidates in the Dec
Guerrero came in second with 22 percent of the vote
In September 2024, Tiffany Gibson, who won the seat in 2023, resigned from her Place 4 seat on the Schertz City Council due to health and family reasons

Texas – A 45-year-old man was arrested late Tuesday night following a series of violent incidents
The Schertz Police Department responded to a robbery report at an H-E-B store on I-35 North around 11:35 p.m
where a vehicle was reportedly taken from a person at gunpoint
they received another call about gunfire in the 2900 block of Candleberry Drive
with assistance from the Cibolo Police Department
used a drone to locate the suspect — identified as Derrick R
Escobar of Schertz — in the 1600 block of Yucca Park
A nearby resident described the gunfire as “pop
pop” and said the shot that struck her house sounded like a shotgun blast
The resident dialed 911 and informed the dispatcher of a shooter in her neighborhood
you can’t do anything to protect them but hope and pray that it stops,” said the resident
and he surrendered without further incident
Police said Escobar had two handguns and was wearing body armor
Authorities believe he was experiencing a mental health crisis
questioned whether Escobar’s actions were driven by mental illness or a deeper intent to harm the community
“Was it somebody who just had a mental illness issue
Or was he actually on a mission to inflict harm on people in the community?” Bradford asked
He was transported to Guadalupe County Jail
Escobar was taken into custody on an emergency detention application
Police Chief Jim Lowery expressed relief that no one was injured during the incident
“We are fortunate that no one was injured during the incident
There is no longer a threat to the community
I am very proud of the officers who engaged this suspect and displayed great discipline taking him into custody,” Lowery said
The chief said SPD had identified multiple vehicles and homes damaged by gunfire
Residents are urged to check their properties for damage and report any findings to Detective McMath at 210-619-1241

Schertz police responded to the crash around 6:41 p.m
on Tuesday in the 17500 block of the Interstate 35 northbound access road
officers found the motorcyclist — identified Friday as Ricardo Valencia
and an officer took over until Schertz EMS arrived
An investigation will be conducted by the Schertz Police Department Central Investigation Division to determine the cause of the crash
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families affected by this tragic event,” the department said

Police arrested 33-year-old Ismael Ortega Quiroz
According to the Schertz Police Department
a man approached a 10-year-old boy in a suspicious white van
The child ran away and informed his parents
wearing all-black clothing and a black ski mask
He was driving a white van with ladders on top
“This call is very alarming and concerning to all of us as members of this community
We are diligently investigating this case and will increase our patrols in the immediate area
We commend the child for not approaching the vehicle and for seeking help
Please take the time to speak to your children and remind them about stranger danger," said Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowry
Police located a van matching the description of the suspect vehicle at a nearby construction site
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ouiroz
Investigators developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for his arrest
Quiroz was arrested and transported to the Bexar County Jail
“I am proud of the work conducted by the men and women of this department
and motivation to achieve optimal results we have this suspect in custody
We want to thank our community for practicing See Something
and Federal partners for their collaboration in this investigation

Texas – A man accused in the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy has been taken into custody
Authorities said officers located a van on Thursday that matched the suspect vehicle’s description at a construction site near the area of the initial report
identified as 33-year-old Ismael Ortega Quiroz
was placed under surveillance while investigators developed probable cause for an arrest warrant
Schertz police said Quiroz is being held on a charge of attempted kidnapping
Quiroz will be transported to the Bexar County Adult Detention Center
Officers first responded to a call about a man attempting to lure the boy into a van at 6:15 p.m
The child ran from the scene and was unharmed
Quiroz was driving a white van with ladders on top

Janice Jeffrey has been pleading for help to solve her son’s murder
“It’s been so hard because there’s still no resolution as to who killed my son,” Janice Jeffrey said
Schertz police said its officers found her only son, Jerod Jeffrey, shot dead in a car at the Sycamore Creek Apartments
The March 12, 2021, murder has remained unsolved
I miss talking to him,” Janice Jeffrey said
All I have now are just pictures and memories.”
The family celebrated his milestone birthday at his gravesite
“It’s a hard challenge every day to get up and continue going
knowing that the person that took your son’s life is still maybe still out there,” Janice Jeffrey said
She said she worries her son’s killer has moved away
She feels like police aren’t prioritizing the case
adding that it has been a challenge to get updates
“I still just feel like they’re brushing it off as
not doing what they should be doing to get this case solved,” Janice Jeffrey said
Schertz police spokesperson Anna Kraft said detectives have spoken with Janice
“We contact her every six months to let her know any new information,” Kraft wrote
the Investigator was a few weeks delayed in contacting her
he didn’t reach out with anything,” Janice Jeffrey said
Janice hopes the next time she gets a call from police will be about the person who killed her son
“I just want some kind of justice for him,” Janice Jeffrey said
Investigators and Jeffrey’s family are offering a $10,000 reward to get information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case

the department said Schertz police school resource officers were investigating the case around 12:30 p.m
Officers and school administrators went to question the student
The release said Matthews “forcefully pushed past both an administrator and an officer.”
Both the officer and administrator sustained injuries
Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery said the officer was treated for injuries to his left wrist
Lowery said the administrator was treated at the scene for injuries to his left ring finger
Matthews fled the campus toward The Village subdivision
A resident reported seeing Matthews in the backyard of a home in the 1000 block of Williamsburg Drive
which is less than half a mile from the school
Matthews was taken into custody and was booked into the Guadalupe County Jail without further incident
will be charged with two counts of assault on a public servant and counts of tampering with evidence
possession of a controlled substance PG2 <1g drug-free zone and evading arrest or detention
Lowery said there is no threat to the community and there were “minimal interruptions to school activities.”
Lowery also said the following statement in the release:

A family’s visit earlier this year to a San Antonio hospital for their 5-year-old child’s injury eventually led to a criminal investigation and a Schertz man’s arrest
Parents took the child to North Central Baptist Hospital where medical professionals alerted authorities about 6:55 p.m
