2024 at 2:51 pm CT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone gets a $72,192 annual pension from his 25 years of service to the Schiller Park Police Department
also started receiving a pension after retiring from a nearby police department in August
If voters do away with the managerial form of government in the April 1 election
Village President Frank DeSimone would see his pay rise to $157,000
Patch obtained DeSimone's pension records from the Schiller Park Police Department
where he retired as a detective after 25 years
which is nearly 40 percent less than his final salary of $115,523
contributed $186,084 to the pension system
If voters go along, DeSimone's pay as village president could be far higher than what most of his counterparts receive. Patch wrote about the situation in a story earlier this month
The Village Board's plan to raise DeSimone's pay was kept secret from the public until after the candidate filing period ended in November. Without explanation, the board also fired Village Manager Evan Summers after eight years
the board voted to put the referendum on the ballot about the managerial form of government
"There are some in our community trying to spread misinformation," DeSimone said at the meeting
"They are claiming that the village board and my decision to ask residents to decide if the managerial form of government should be retained was a great secret
Any claim to the contrary is just plain untrue and being made to serve political self-interest."
resident Chris McCullough requested documents showing that the change of government has been a topic in village government
DeSimone and other village incumbents are running unopposed

— An elderly dog named Max was found tied to a picnic table at Schiller Park Thursday morning
along with a note saying he was "a good boy."
Max was found emaciated and dehydrated by workers at Schiller Park
They gave him water while they waited for help to come
a local non-profit advocating for animal welfare
was called to the park to evaluate the dog by Syracuse Animal Control
"He had just been there when they got there early in the morning
and the note was there as well saying his name
and that he needed help and that he was a good boy."
My owners can't take care of me no more
Syracuse Police came to pick Max up and brought him to an emergency vet
He was then released into the care of HumaneCNY
which says he is being treated for infected eyes
"He is so sweet and loving," said HumaneCNY Executive Director Maureen Davison
"We are so grateful for the community support
He is on the road to feeling the best he can."
Heath calls abandoning your pets "an act of desperation" that can be avoided with the right resources
And we don't want the animals to suffer as a result."
With an increase in surrenders and a decrease in adoptions, the issue is that local shelters and animal rescues are often too full to take in pets
an issue the City of Syracuse is currently struggling with
Heath suggested that if you're at a point where you feel like you can no longer care for your pet, reach out for help. This includes reaching out to Cuse Pit Crew-- which can provide dog food
training and help pay for veterinary care -- reaching out to family and friends to see if they are willing to take in your pets
or even reaching out to shelters to see if they have available space
rather than leaving your pet in a public place
"If you're at a place where absolutely you can no longer care for your animal
then that is why shelters and rescues exist for that very reason," Heath said
But we can try to help if we can navigate some resources to help people so they don't feel like they need to abandon their pets."
Syracuse Police confirmed with CNY Central the owner of Max was arrested for abandonment and animal cruelty
both misdemeanors under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law

Family and friends attend a vigil and balloon release for Malachi Johnson in the 1500 block of Diplomat Lane in Ford Heights on Friday
The candles spelled out Malachi’s nickname
The last words Francine Johnson heard her son Malachi Johnson say to her were “I’m sorry” and “I love you.”
he was killed in a road-rage incident in Schiller Park
“I can’t even go in to his room,” Francine Johnson said
Police say the driver who fatally shot Malachi Johnson acted in self-defense
But his family is calling for further investigation from authorities
“I’m not letting it go,” said Francine Johnson
The Cook County state’s attorney’s office said: “After a thorough review
we concluded that the totality of the evidence was insufficient to meet our burden of proof to file criminal charges related to this incident.”
Schiller Park police didn’t respond to requests for comment Friday
mother of Malachi “Pooda” Johnson along with a few dozen family and friends attend a vigil and balloon release for Malachi in the 1500 block of Diplomat Lane in Ford Heights on Friday
The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway as Malachi Johnson and another driver became embroiled in a dispute that carried over to the 10000 block of Irving Park Road near Scott Street
While stopped next to each other in traffic
Both drivers brandished firearms before firing shots
Johnson was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge
according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office
a woman identified by relatives as his friend
suffered minor wounds and was treated at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and released
Relatives said the driver “bumped” Johnson from behind while on the tollway and followed him off of the ramp toward Irving Park Road and Scott Street
Though police said there was an exchange of gunfire
Malachi Johnson’s family say his firearm was still in his waistband after the shooting
“I know my brother did have a weapon on him
but his weapon was in his waist when his body was found,” said his older sister Miracle Johnson
Malachi Johnson was killed in a road-rage incident in Schiller Park
Malachi Johnson had an “unbreakable” bond with his sister Miracle and often visited her while she was in college at Alabama A&M University
“He was one of those people you could count on to tell you the truth,” Miracle Johnson said
He jokingly wished Miracle Johnson a happy Mother’s Day because he felt she acted like his mother and watched over him
“I was looking forward to growing old with him,” Miracle Johnson said
Malachi Johnson’s family described him as a funny
lighthearted person who could fill a room with laughter and those he loved with comfort
Malachi Johnson struggled with mental health issues but confided in his older sister
who persuaded him to work toward getting his GED so he could follow in her footsteps at Alabama A&M
Johnson worked at Portillo’s for almost a half year to buy his first car — a blue Hyundai Sonata — and got the Nissan with help from his mother last fall to get him to and from a job at Amazon
When his older sister went to identify his body
like he almost had a smile on his face,” she said
“What’s been helping me is the fact that he don’t have to struggle no more.”
Malachi Johnson was also anticipating becoming a father; his daughter is expected to arrive in December. A GoFundMe page has been started to raise money for his family
“That was my best friend in the whole wide world,” said Miracle Johnson
“Planning his funeral on my birthday is so unreal to me right now

Last November, Schiller Park’s Sway Bar was issued a citation by village officials because its back alley was marked up with graffiti
when a man was murdered there in a possible gang-related shooting
That’s even though police records reveal the April 19 murder of 38-year-old River Grove resident Jonathan Vallejo was the third violent incident at Sway Bar in five years
with the bullets narrowly missing people inside
a patron was stabbed and hospitalized following a fight inside the establishment
Sway Bar has made several campaign contributions over the years to the political fund benefiting Mayor Nick Caiafa
who doubles as the northwest suburb’s liquor commissioner with considerable authority over businesses in town that sell alcohol
Those contributions include $370 one month before Vallejo’s murder
according to Illinois State Board of Elections records
Records show that a number of bars and restaurants in town contribute to Caiafa’s Schiller Park First political party
but Caiafa says that doesn’t translate into favors and free rein
He says he downgraded from 4 a.m to 2 a.m
the liquor license at another local bar following problems there — even though that bar donated to his campaign
he said he hadn’t made a decision about Sway Bar’s future because he didn’t yet know if the murder was a sign of problems “inherent in the bar
“We’re waiting to see what the police come back with,” he said at the time
he said he now plans to meet with the bar’s owner “and ask some serious questions” because “we have concerns” about what went on the night of the murder
“I didn’t know anything about the stabbing,” Caiafa said
get answers and make a decision if we go for suspension or revocation
Caiafa says he sent a letter to local businesses with liquor licenses two weeks after the Vallejo murder urging them to attract good clientele or risk a crackdown on their ability to operate
A letter sent to liquor license holders in Schiller Park by the mayor after a murder at a bar in April
“You must bear in mind that every patron who commits bad acts could cause anything from a citation to revocation of your license,” Caiafa wrote
“You should strive to have patrons that would be as welcome in your home as in your establishment.”
Former Schiller Park Mayor Barbara Piltaver
says Caiafa should have acted more aggressively against Sway Bar
“I would definitely either suspend them or pull the license and say
‘You have to get different clientele,’” she says
She lost to Caiafa in the 2017 election and is considering running against him again
because of her belief that Caiafa is putting politics over public safety
says his customers are mostly local people and
“it’s been very quiet” in terms of incidents and police calls
Vallejo’s family says he had gone to the bar that night to attend a birthday gathering
and police are investigating whether the shooter had been with that group

Peak fall color season has just about arrived in Ohio
Most of Ohio's trees, including those in and around Columbus, are at "near peak" levels of color, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Near peak means trees show between 30 and 60 percent of their color but haven't peaked yet
That means you still have time to go out and gaze and capture some of fall's splendor
But where do you go to maximize your chances of seeing the best variety of colors and trees
The Dispatch compiled what we believe are the best spots to see the leaves in Columbus
chosen in an unscientific process based on fall vibes
You can get a good look at fall foliage at any of the region's many metro parks, but the Scioto Grove Metro Park stands out for its dense
mature forests packed along the Scioto River south of Columbus
the park also offers three backpacking sites

The Scioto MileLocated in the heart of downtown Columbus and connected to a diverse array of parks offering a variety of unique landscapes, the Scioto Mile trail is the perfect spot to see fall foliage
You can walk or bike along the trail south to the Scioto Audobon Metro Park or north toward Ohio State University and the Olentangy Trail
The Olentangy Trail follows the Olentangy River from downtown Columbus all the way to Worthington
weaving its way through parks and Ohio State University's campus
that the trail is under construction until Fall 2025

Nestled in the heart of the German Village
Schiller Park is a scenic stop for any fall foliage lovers

Goodale Park is conveniently located close to major hubs of activity in Columbus: the Short North and the Arena District
Honorable mention: Everywhere elseIt's not hard to find a good spot to see fall leaves in Columbus
The region is practically bursting with parks
it would be hard to find a bad spot to see fall colors in the city
except for maybe staring straight at a concrete wall
