playThe numbers behind Scott Frost's return to UCF (0:50)Check out the stats behind Scott Frost reuniting with the UCF Knights as their new head coach
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Scott Frost walks into the UCF football building and into his office
the one he used the last time he had this job
There are drawings from his three kids tacked to the walls
There are still trophies sitting on a shelf
He still parks in the same spot before he walks into that same building and sits at the same desk
The only thing that has changed is that the desk is positioned in a different part of the room
But the man doing all the same things at the University of Central Florida is a different Scott Frost than the one who left following that undefeated 2017 season to take the head coach job at Nebraska
UCF might look the same, but the school is different now, too. The Knights are now in a Power 4 conference, and there is now a 12-team College Football Playoff that affords them the opportunity to play for national championships -- as opposed to self-declaring them
construction is underway to upgrade the football stadium
"I know I'm a wiser person and smarter football coach," Frost said during a sit-down interview with ESPN
I don't think you really get better as a person unless you go through really good things
I just know I'm where I'm supposed to be."
the starting quarterback during Frost's last season as UCF head coach
is now the team's quarterbacks coach. UCF AthleticsOut on the practice field
Frost feels the most at home -- he feels comfort in going back to the place that has defined nearly every day of his life
then thrived as a college and NFL player before going into coaching
He coaches up his players with a straightforwardness that quarterbacks coach McKenzie Milton remembers fondly from their previous time together at UCF
Milton started at quarterback on the 2017 undefeated team
and the two remained close after Frost left
"I see the same version of him from when I was here as a player," Milton said
"Even though the dynamic in college football has changed dramatically with the portal and NIL
I think Coach Frost is one of the few coaches that can still bring a group of guys together and turn them into a team
just with who he is and what he's done and what he's been through in his life
Frost has had to adjust to those changes to college football
We've got the right kids who love football
We get to practice with palm trees and sunshine and
But it's also just not the constant stress meat grinder of some other places."
"One thing I told myself -- I'm never going to talk about that
Frost says he has no regrets about leaving UCF
even though he didn't get the results he had hoped for at his alma mater
When Nebraska decided to part ways with coach Mike Riley in 2017
He had been the starting quarterback on the 1997 team
the last Nebraska team to win a national title
Frost had done the unthinkable at UCF -- taking a program that was winless the season before he arrived
to undefeated and the talk of the college football world just two years later
But he could not ignore the pull of Nebraska and the opportunities that came along with power conference football
"We went undefeated and didn't get a chance to win a championship
You are always striving to reach higher goals
I had always told myself I wasn't going to leave here unless there was a place that you can legitimately go and win a national championship
It was a tough decision because I didn't want to leave regardless of which place it was."
Frost maintains he was always happy at UCF
But he also knew returning to Nebraska would make others happy
"I think I kind of knew that wasn't best for me," he said
"It was what some other people wanted me to do to some degree."
Frost went 16-31 -- including 5-22 in one-score games
He was fired three games into the 2022 season after a home loss to Georgia Southern
He reflected on what happened during his tenure with the Cornhuskers but also about what he wanted to do with the rest of his career
and distinctly remembers a conversation they had
'It's my goal to get back to UCF one day,'" Milton said
Frost needed to figure out how to position himself to get back there
he coached his son's flag football team to a championship
Frost found the 5- and 6-year-olds he coached "listen better than 19-year-olds sometimes."
Frost had visited the Rams during their offseason program
Rams coach Sean McVay immediately reached out
primarily helping with special teams but also working with offense and defense
"It was more just getting another great leader in the building
that has wisdom and a wealth of experience to be able to learn from," McVay told ESPN
"His ability to be able to communicate to our players from a great coaching perspective
but also have the empathy and the understanding from when he played -- all of those things were really valuable."
McVay said he and Frost had long discussions about handling the challenges that come with falling short as a head coach
"There's strength in the vulnerability," McVay said
There's a real power in the perspective that you have from those different experiences
If you can really look at some of the things that maybe didn't go down the way you wanted to within the framework of your role and responsibility
Frost says his time with the Rams rejuvenated him
"Sometimes when you're a head coach or maybe even a coordinator
you forget how fun it is to be around the game when it's not all on you all the time
and we certainly weren't going to win or lose based on every move that I made
and I didn't have to wear the losses and struggle for the victories like you do when you're a head coach
Frost with Mohajir during spring practice. UCF AthleticsUCF athletics director Terry Mohajir got a call from then-head coach Gus Malzahn last November
on the verge of finishing his fourth season at UCF
was contemplating becoming offensive coordinator at Florida State
Given all the responsibilities on his desk as head coach -- from NIL to the transfer portal to roster management -- he found the idea of going back to playcalling appealing
Mohajir started preparing a list of candidates and was told Thanksgiving night that Malzahn had planned to step down
Though Frost previously worked at UCF under athletics director Danny White
he and Mohajir had a preexisting relationship
Mohajir said he reached out to Frost after he was fired at Nebraska to gauge his interest in returning to UCF as offensive coordinator under Malzahn
Mohajir learned quickly that Frost had interest in returning as head coach
Mohajir called McVay and Rams general manager Les Snead
They told him Frost did anything that was asked of him
'You would never know he was the head coach at a major college program." Mohajir also called former Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts to get a better understanding about what happened with the Cornhuskers
Mohajir decided he wanted to meet Frost in person
I really believe that Scott wanted the job the most."
Frost with his team after winning the AAC title in 2017 and completing their undefeated season. Julio Aguilar/Getty ImagesThe first day back in Orlando
in California to be able to make it to Florida in time for his introductory news conference with his family
It took another 24 hours for him and his wife
"Rather than bouncing around chasing NFL jobs
we thought maybe we would be able to plant some roots here and have our kids be in a stable place for a while at a place that I really enjoyed coaching and that I think it has a chance to evolve into a place that could win a lot of football games," Frost said
"All that together was just enough to get me to come back."
The natural question now is whether Frost can do what he did during his first tenure
That 2017 season stands as the only winning season of his head coaching career
but it carries so much weight with UCF fans because of its significance as both the best season in school history
and one that changed both its own future and college football
White self-declared the Knights national champions
Locked out of the four-team playoff after finishing No
White started lobbying for more attention to be paid to schools outside the power conferences
That season also positioned UCF to pounce during the next wave of realignment
the Knights began play in a Power 4 conference for the first time as Big 12 members
UCF now has a defined path to play for a national title and no longer has to go undefeated and then pray for a shot
But Frost cautions those who expect the clock to turn back to 2017
"I don't think there's many people out there that silly," Frost said
that they're going to expect you go into undefeated in the first year
I think the fans are a little more realistic than that."
Had the transfer portal and NIL existed when Frost was at UCF during his first tenure
he might not have been able to keep the 2017 team together
which went undefeated under Josh Heupel before losing to LSU in the Fiesta Bowl
UCF will receive a full share of television revenue from the Big 12
after receiving a half share (estimated $18 million) in each of his first two seasons
While that is more than what it received in the AAC
it is less than what other Big 12 schools received
UCF went 5-13 in Big 12 play and 10-15 overall
Assuming the House v. NCAA settlement goes into effect this summer
Mohajir says UCF is aiming to spend the full $20.5 million
"It's like we moved to the fancy neighborhood
and we got a job that's going to pay us money over time
but we're stretching a little to be there right now
and that requires a lot of effort from a lot of people and a lot of commitment from a lot of people," Frost said
the help that we've gotten has been impressive."
Mohajir points out that UCF has had five coaching changes over the past 10 years
dating back to the final season under George O'Leary in 2015
Frost says he wants to be in for the long term
and Mohajir hopes consistency at head coach will be an added benefit
Mohajir believes UCF is getting the best of Frost in this moment and scoffs at any questions about whether rehiring him will work again
"But I don't really look at it as 'working again.' It's not 'again.' It's
'Will it work?' Because it's a different era."
Frost says success is not recreating 2017 and going undefeated
"If our group now can help us become competitive in the Big 12
compete for championships and make us more relevant nationally
I think we'll have done our job to help catapult UCF again."
You could say he is looking for the same result

LA Innocence Project believes evidence shows Peterson is not responsible for killing of pregnant wife Laci in 2002
the Los Angeles Innocence Project (LAIP) made a seemingly bombshell announcement
The non-profit declared in a court filing that after a year-long investigation it had uncovered new evidence that “eviscerates” the prosecution’s theory of what occurred
“This new evidence undermines the prosecution’s entire circumstantial case against Petitioner
and shows that the jury relied on false evidence
which provides pro bono legal services to people it believes have been wrongfully convicted
stated in a lengthy petition filed to a state appeals court
The news marked a major development in a case that has transfixed the US since Laci Peterson was first reported missing while eight months pregnant on Christmas Eve 2002
But what does it mean for the 52-year-old Peterson
who has always claimed he did not commit the crime
and the efforts to overturn his conviction
a trial attorney and former deputy district attorney
but the LAIP appears to have conducted a substantial investigation and generated what they believe are compelling reasons to take another look
“The question for the court will be: do all of these potential errors amount to enough in order to decide that had the jury heard about this new evidence they would have drawn a different conclusion?” said Faddis
When the LAIP announced in January 2024 that it was investigating the Peterson case
the news was met with skepticism and in some cases scorn
a city of 200,000 in California’s Central Valley
drawing intense and widespread media coverage
The remains of Laci and her unborn child were recovered from the San Francisco Bay in April 2003
at the time a 30-year-old fertilizer salesman
and it was quickly revealed he had engaged in multiple affairs
saying they had a romantic relationship and that Peterson had claimed he was a widower preparing to spend his first Christmas alone before his wife’s disappearance
View image in fullscreenScott Peterson in court in Redwood City in 2022
Photograph: Jeff Chiu/APProsecutors argued during the closely watched trial that Peterson did not want to be a father and smothered his wife around Christmas Eve before using a newly purchased fishing boat to dump her body into the bay
Peterson had told police that he had been out fishing at the Berkeley Marina in the San Francisco Bay the day Laci disappeared
Her remains were eventually discovered just a few miles from the marina
The California supreme court overturned the death sentence in 2020 over a juror issue
and he received a new sentence of life without the possibility of parole
with police more focused on arresting him than investigating what happened to Laci
he sought a new trial alleging that his original trial was tainted by a juror who lied about her history of abuse – a judge denied his request
which filed motions seeking DNA testing and discovery
argued that the prosecution suppressed and destroyed critical exculpatory evidence before the trial and violated Peterson’s rights to due process and a fair trial
The filing lays out what the LAIP describes as new evidence in support of a theory Peterson’s defense argued during his trial – that Laci was abducted and held for several days by someone else
before she was killed and her body dumped in the bay in an effort to “shift blame” on to Scott (it was widely reported that he had been fishing in the area the day of her disappearance)
View image in fullscreenLaci Peterson
who went missing from her home in Modesto in 2002
Photograph: APThe LAIP presents new evidence showing a home across the street from the Petersons was burgled the day of Laci’s disappearance
and that a witness reportedly heard a conversation between the burglars that Laci saw them and confronted them
The organization also says it has obtained new “sworn statements” from witnesses who reported seeing Laci in the neighborhood after prosecutors claim Scott killed her
It also argues it has uncovered new evidence linking the burglars to a van that was set on a fire nearby and had a mattress inside with “apparent bloodstains”
The filing states the prosecution suppressed evidence of the police investigation into that incident and that it has not been subjected to more “precise DNA testing” to establish a link to Laci’s case
the LAIP said it interviewed a retired Los Angeles police department lieutenant and police practices expert who reviewed police reports in the case and concluded that the Modesto police department investigation was disorganized and did not adhere to standard police procedures
A key argument from last month’s filing emphasizes that new research and methods to determine fetal growth indicate that the Petersons’ unborn child was older than the prosecution’s expert witness
said – meaning Laci was killed days after the prosecution claimed
“New evidence by Dr Doubilet shows that recent medical research published in peer-reviewed medical journals establishes that Laci and Conner were not killed until days after Laci was reported missing
at a time Petitioner could not possibly have been responsible for their deaths,” the filing states
“These new scientific research and longitudinal studies all show that Dr DeVore’s opinion – which was based on a study published in 1984
when fetal biometry research was in its infancy – was wrong.”
the director of the Los Angeles Innocence Project
argued in the petition that the prosecution’s case was entirely circumstantial
and that it was highly likely the jury would not have reached a guilty verdict if they had heard the evidence laid out in the petition
once the police locked on to Mr Peterson as the prime suspect
they had no interest in finding evidence showing that someone other than Scott may have abducted Laci Peterson because that evidence did not fit with their working theory of the case,” Mitchell wrote
the famed New York-based Innocence Project made a statement noting the LAIP is “wholly independent” from its organization
Neama Rahmani, the president of West Coast Trial Lawyers and a former federal prosecutor
said he was surprised in some ways that the LAIP decided to work with Peterson
“There’s just so much evidence [against Peterson].”
He expressed skepticism at the LAIP’s findings
stating he didn’t see any “fatal flaws” in the case
but when you’re having an affair and your pregnant wife ends up many miles away from her home
does not strike me as a very good defense case
“I don’t think this is enough to get Scott Peterson a new trial
The standard when it comes to habeas relief is very high,” he said
“I don’t think this new evidence exonerates Scott Peterson
Faddis agreed that meeting the standard for relief was difficult
but said the LAIP had made a “compelling” attempt
Included in the petition was a declaration from Peterson describing his behavior in his marriage as “disgraceful and immature” but denying he played a role in the death of his wife and their unborn child
“I have steadfastly maintained my innocence from the moment my wife went missing on December 24 2002
“I had absolutely nothing to do with the disappearance and deaths of my wife and son.”
tax cuts and deregulation — promising the “America First” agenda would be “the blueprint for a more abundant world.”
in a brief speech Monday that opened the Milken Institute Global Conference
said all three elements of the policy must be taken together in order to be understood
“They are interlocking parts of an engine designed to drive long-term investment in the American economy,” he said at the Beverly Hilton
“Tariffs are engineered to encourage companies like yours to invest directly in the United States
not only because we have the most productive workforce in the world
but because we will soon have the most favorable tax and regulatory environment as well,” he said
Bessent telegraphed his speech with an opinion piece Sunday in the Wall Street Journal that made the same points
In a conversation with the institute’s chairman and founder
he said one key goal was regulatory reform that would “make everyone look more like Texas” while reducing the government’s borrowing so the deficit decreases by about 1% per year and falls to its long-term average of 3.1% of gross national product
Bessent’s appearance was not without drama. The New York Post reported that Trump envoy Ric Grenell organized a soiree at the nearby five-star Peninsula Beverly Hills on Sunday afternoon featuring Bessent that directly competed with a conference reception hosted by hedge fund mogul Ken Griffin
The billionaire founder and chief executive of Citadel
Griffin has been highly critical of the tariffs and will help close the conference with a conversation late Wednesday afternoon with Milken
This is the 28th annual global conference hosted by the Santa Monica think tank
which seeks to employ capitalist models in solving the world’s economic
1,000 speakers and some 4,000 participants paying thousands for tickets
“While there’s no shortage of those challenges
we actually have the resources and technology to address these issues
what’s often missing is finding a common will to do so,” said Milken Chief Executive Richard Ditizio
“How else to explain that in a world that has created some $500 trillion in wealth
one in 11 people on the planet live on under $2 a day
Business
As Trump’s aggressive tariffs rattle business owners and shake the foundation of American importing
the men and women who work on the ground at the country’s busiest port are feeling the effects too
Coming four months after the devastating Los Angeles County fires
the event will feature a Wednesday afternoon panel with L.A
“Rising Strong: Los Angeles’ Path to Recovery.” Panel members include Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and Snap Inc
co-founder and Chief Executive Evan Spiegel
Bessent is not the only Trump administration official attending the conference. Others include Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, who is leading a controversial effort to dismantle the Education Department
Among the Wall Street notables onstage will be Citigroup Chief Executive Jane Fraser; Henry Kravis and George Roberts, co-founders of private equity pioneer KKR; David Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of Carlyle Group; and hedge fund mogul Bill Ackman, a leading Trump backer who has called for a trade deal with China
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang will have a conversation with Milken
company makes chips critical for artificial intelligence computing
Bessent said in his remarks that it is crucial the country lead in artificial intelligence and quantum computing or “everything else doesn’t matter.”
Huang’s panel is one of a number on the topic. On Sunday, during an invite-only session that preceded the conference’s formal kickoff, Elon Musk called the U.S
government inefficient and said artificial intelligence should be used to replace the functions currently done by some public workers
according to a person who attended the session
who recently said he was stepping back from his Department of Government Efficiency’s cost-cutting efforts
also spoke about his brain-implant company
and ongoing developments at SpaceX in a conversation with Milken
Last year, Musk also spoke at the conference, but it was a publicly streamed session. Since then, the world’s richest person has been a lightning rod for criticism due to his involvement with DOGE.

Comparing Texas softball's Mia Scott's versatility to a Swiss-Army Knife would be an insult to Scott
The UT utility star played every single position across the diamond and hit from both sides of the plate in Saturday's 12-3 Senior Day win over Kentucky. Yes
one walk ― will not lead to any extended appearances
"She's never pitched before in a game in her life that I know of," Texas coach Mike White said
More: Texas softball: Mia Scott may not talk to the press, but she says plenty with her game
There didn't seem to be any structure to Scott's trip around the field
as White had no idea it was happening until the start of the game
White shrugged his shoulders and went along with his player
Scott shifted to shortstop in the second inning
confusing Texas first baseman Joley Mitchell
Scott took Mitchell's spot and sent her over to third base
so we're gonna play all positions,'" Mitchell said
locked into one of the top-four seeds in the SEC tournament
had very little at stake against the Wildcats
The runs flowed freely and they jumped out to a 10-run lead after two innings
she finished the fifth at catcher and pitcher
The Longhorns' dominance from the start of the game allowed White to relax and enjoy the show
and he was grateful toward Wildcats coach Rachel Lawson for not taking offense to the feat
"I appreciate her willingness to to be a part of what happened."
Scott is a naturally quiet person, who doesn't post to social media and avoids interviews
she seems to have a habit for the extraordinary
"I'm extremely proud of Mia this year," Mitchell said
and she really is a huge asset to this team."
At an event filled with titans of industry
Scott Bessent is the most important attendee
the current Treasury Secretary and former macro hedge fund manager who worked with George Soros
will be the first public speaker at this year's Milken conference
chatting with conference organizer Michael Milken on "the state of the global economy" Monday morning
The mood for the rest of the conference will depend on what the respected investor says
It'll be the 28th iteration of the conference put on by the foundation of Milken
who attracts the biggest names in the business and finance world for three days of nonstop panels
This year's guest list includes Citadel founder Ken Griffin
I'll be at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles to cover it all
Be sure to check Business Insider for the latest updates
This is the volatile backdrop of Bessent and Milken's conversation
Any hints about a retreat from the most severe tariffs or potential deals being reached from Bessent will give the rest of the week a buoyant feel
But Bessent doubling down on some of the most nationalistic views of the administration will make plenty of conversations among bigwigs moot points
how does a panel titled "The North American Economy: The Tie That Binds
Despite It All" — with speakers like the CEO of Canadian aerospace manufacturer Bombardier — make sense when the political reality has the former allies sparring in the press and at the negotiating table
It's an awkward reality for the thousands of attendees
many of whom are used to the world bending to meet their view
even world-famous athletes and musicians — Pitbull is speaking about "reimaging the state of American education" Tuesday afternoon — are all waiting to see what the administration will do next
As Loeb said at his Economic Club of New York talk
And Bessent will set the macro mood first thing Monday morning

installation shots of “Harlequin Choreographies,” 2025
at cam.contemporarie/Photo: Natasha Moustache
A recent fall that left a small wound on the palm of my hand has caused me to think about my connection to a somewhat unfamiliar lineage
painful gash exposed layers of skin that looked like the strata of a rock and made me wonder
“What if each of these layers is the skin of my parents
but the question of what parts of my lineage live within the palms of my hands lingers
in “Harlequin Choreographies,” Erol Scott Harris excavates the forgotten
and hidden parts of himself that were revealed through a choreography of care and curiosity
The body of work in his solo exhibition at cam.contemporarie emerged from a rediscovered relationship to his grandparents
he absorbed silent aspects of their histories
now unleashed through his living performance
What a surprise to discover that his grandmother wanted to be a tap dancer
and his grandfather wanted to go to school for architecture
Though their journey ultimately led them to the vinyl flooring industry
what might be considered unfulfilled dreams became a living part of him
The exhibition title draws from a photograph he came across of his grandmother
Behind her hung a painting of a Harlequin—nothing particularly outstanding and from an unnamed artist
but treasured enough to migrate from Mexico to Chicago with their family
Harris came across a book called “The Stage’s Glory,” where he traced the choreography of the harlequin character
studied the scores of notes on performance strategies
and reexamined the spirit-led gestures that were sometimes misperceived as thoughtless improvisation
which happens to be their name spelled backwards
shortening the distance between him and his relatives in terms of years and borders
This treasure hunt intensified when a fire broke out in his grandparents’ living room
scorching the vinyl flooring his grandfather had laid
The home that evidenced the physical labor and hidden desires of his family became the theater as he was now confronting the parts of his family’s legacy that were previously buried
“Always A Stack In The Studio (Urban Dictionary: “A Stack”= $1,000 [one grand]),” mounted center stage
unwinds layers of flooring and objects that were saved from the fire
I was invited to join in the dance after rising from the floor and noticing a glistening gem burrowed within small
which reminded me of the various relics I saw while moving around the floor installation
The prints that wrap around the gallery portray a light game of tug of war between Lore and Erol
the piece “Taproot 0.2” displays Lore’s use of his body as an instrument and captures his harlequin performance at one moment in time
Another wall spotlights monoprints made from tiles Erol dug from under the layers of burnt flooring
engaging with the idea that things will disintegrate
much like the performance of excavation from which this body of work emerges
may one day be buried under another set of linoleum floors
but that it exists in a new way that requires another kind of choreography to rediscover
“Erol Scott Harris: Harlequin Choreographies” is on view at cam.contemporarie

San Francisco Police Chief William "Bill" Scott was sworn in by Mayor Ed Lee on January 23
after serving 27 years in the Los Angeles Police Department where he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief.
He has been focused on implementing 21st Century Policing reforms to address public safety and reduce crime in San Francisco
Chief Scott’s reform efforts have been nationally recognized as a way to build trust with communities and improve a sense of legitimacy in policing that have led to better public safety outcomes for San Francisco
The reform project began with 272 recommendations from the Obama administration’s Department of Justice
When then-Attorney General Jeffrey Sessions abandoned to national reform project in 2017
Chief Scott reached out to the California Department of Justice to partner in overseeing the SFPD’s voluntary reform initiative.
The SFPD submitted the final responses to the Department of Justice’s reform recommendations on April 1
Chief Scott has created a foundation to ensure the department continues to build on its reform initiative
While working to establish a national model for police reform
Chief Scott has led the department through challenging times
including the global COVID-19 pandemic and a national crisis in policing
following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Violent crime in San Francisco has remained far below other major cities in the United States while clearances for violent crimes like homicides are well above the national average.
Chief Scott has embraced new and innovative ways to address some of San Francisco’s biggest challenges
He developed new crime-fighting strategies and implemented technologies like ALPR cameras and drones that have had significant results in identifying and arresting suspects
He attended the University of Alabama where he earned a degree in accounting
He is also a graduate of Senior Management of Institute of Policing.

Spoilers follow for the series finale of The Righteous Gemstones, “That Man of God May Be Complete.”
When Seann William Scott was cast in the final season of The Righteous Gemstones
would have such a pivotal role in the series finale; all he knew was that it was an opportunity to work on his “favorite show.” So he was surprised to learn that his character — the seemingly good-natured son of Eli Gemstone’s season-long love interest and Aimee-Leigh’s former best friend
Lori (Megan Mullaly) — would be the show’s final antagonist
showing just subtle flashes of the darkness he has lingering below the surface
and murder every one of his mom’s lovers in an attempt to win her back
Having killed his father for attempting to do the same thing to Eli the episode prior
and Kelvin Gemstone before taking a retaliatory bullet to the head himself
he asks the Gemstones siblings to pray over his dying body
and their prayers are the final meaningful lines of dialogue each of them delivers in the series
Scott sells the emotion of the scene with quietly labored breathing and a face of calm resignation
For fans who primarily know him for broad comedic roles in movies like American Pie and Role Models
it’s an impressive introduction to his dramatic range
Scott is grateful to have played a part in the finale of this beloved show
partly because it helps him cope with its ending as a fan
“What they did for me is give me lifelong bragging rights,” he says
because I’ll be able to go and rewatch all these episodes.”
and we got David and Danny to come on to write the script
but I hadn’t seen them since then until this show
How did the opportunity to play Corey come to you from there
I learned from the cast when we were doing the show that
Danny typically has someone in mind for each role
I’d actually been trading emails with David over the years
just checking in out of love and to find something to do together
and then I got a call from my agents and they were like
“There’s this role in The Righteous Gemstones
“I’m fucking in!” They sent over three scripts
so I had no idea what the arc for the character was
All I really knew was that he was a pork salesman
and his mom starts a relationship with Eli
and he has a difficult time with that but then he kind of accepts it
So you didn’t know that you would play such a pivotal role in the series finale?I had no idea
But then I talked to Danny afterwards and he was like
“We’ve got some juicy shit planned for you.” I’m like
“We’re going to find out that your dad has been taking out all of his mom’s lovers
I didn’t know until I got to Charleston and I was doing wardrobe fitting
buddy …” And that’s when the wardrobe designer was like
“We got to get you suited up for a Michael Jackson outfit!” I was like
“Excuse me?” And then she told me about the dance
and I was like “Holy shit.” And then she told me about what happens
What was it like trying to find your footing within this ensemble that already has so much rapport and chemistry
It’s not a normal thing to get the opportunity to work on your favorite TV show
I can’t make it.” I only had this one scene
Some of the people came down with COVID.” And I was like
and I think that almost helped me keep the nerves at bay a little bit
and I was just watching everybody and laughing
The Righteous Gemstones is known for man-child characters with misguided swagger
and that’s a role you’ve played a fair bit in the past
why do you think they wanted you for this part?I think because this is already such a different role for me than what people are used to
it might be more impactful when things start to break down in the finale
Danny had a master plan: Let’s take this guy and have him play the most unassuming
there are flashes that indicate Corey has some darkness lingering beneath the surface
How much were you trying to leave bread crumbs for the character’s twist
you don’t want to be watching episode six and be like
So I think it was just enough for it to all make sense
I remember we did the scene at the steak house in one of the earlier episodes where my character gets really upset when it’s confirmed that Eli and his mom are hooking up
We did some takes where it was much more heightened and much more intense
When you learned how much of the series finale was going to rest on your shoulders
I just felt enormous gratitude to get to do something like this in this show
“This is a classic story of a good person doing a terrible thing due to circumstance and abuse.” When we started to film it
Danny was really pleased with what I was doing
so I was able to put the pressure aside a little bit and just be like
we’ve got to commit to this and make sure it works
What was it like filming the Michael Jackson choreography sequence
Did the dance take a long time to learn?I think it’s maybe a little bit of a stretch to call it Michael Jackson choreography
this is such an incredible character moment
and you realize this character is breaking down and he’s not well
I can’t remember how many hours I put in to practice it
I don’t recall there ever being so many pelvic thrusts
I wanted to talk about how you approached the death scene
It’s such an important scene for the siblings and their character arcs
and you need the emotion of that to play too
How did you balance that?I don’t remember what I was thinking when we were shooting it
and I remember it all being really emotional
This character loves these guys — he wants them to be family
It’s not like this whole time he’s been filled with envy and he secretly hated them

Mia Scott becomes first student-athlete in program history to play all nine positions during single softball game
Game Recap: Softball | 05.03.2025 | Chris Allen Brown
AUSTIN, Texas – Saturday's 12-3 Texas win over Kentucky will be remembered for more than just the Longhorns' 45th overall win and 22nd at Red & Charline McCombs Field this season. It'll forever be remembered as the day senior Mia Scott played all nine positions on the field in a single game
who appeared in and started her 241st career game on Saturday
was initially penned into Texas' starting lineup as the team's starting third baseman
once the Longhorns grabbed a 3-0 lead after the first full inning
the UT coaching staff began to look at the lineup card and wonder what they could do for their fourth-year senior
Scott shifted over to shortstop from third base and the run was on
After Texas scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the second to take a 10-0 lead in the game, Scott jogged out to second base to begin the top of the third. After the first two outs, Texas softball head coach Mike White came out of the bullpen and rearranged his infield and moved Scott to first base for her fourth different defensive position over the course of the game's first three innings
With a 12-1 Texas lead to start the fourth inning
Scott shifted around all three outfield positions after every out in order to beat the forthcoming five-inning run-rule result and push her defensive position total to seven in four frames
With all 1,355 around the stadium knowing what was happening as the game entered the top of the fifth, Scott was the last defensive Longhorn to take the field as she was putting on the catcher's equipment and went behind the dish as fellow senior Sophia Simpson was in the circle
After Simpson struck out the first Wildcat batter of the inning
went out to the umpire to not only give Simpson a curtain call in front of the Texas faithful but also move Scott from behind the plate to the pitching circle to mark the ninth different position played for the Angleton
It took Scott just four pitches to get the second out of the fifth inning, before giving way to Citlaly Gutierrez
who got the final out of the frame and conclude Saturday's action
"I actually got talked into doing all that with Mia as we were in the field
They plan this stuff and spring it upon me at the last minute and that's kind of what they did
But what we have to be thankful for is (Kentucky head coach Rachel) Lawson for understanding what the situation was and going along with it
She's a first-class coach and a first-class person
There are some people who would be on the wrong side of that
so I appreciate her for wanting to be a part of what happened."
I was able to just be myself and have a fun day at the field
I'm also thankful for my teammates for letting me be able to do such a fun thing today
I know the team really fed off the crowd's energy today as well as they really kept me up and going throughout the game."

Founding Principal of Eighteen Capital Group
a real estate and private equity investment firm highlights the importance of building safety in honor of National Building Safety Month
offering valuable tips for property owners and tenants
is calling attention to the importance of safety in both residential and commercial properties
National Building Safety Month is an annual observance that promotes safety in all types of buildings
from residential homes to commercial properties
and encourages compliance with building codes to reduce hazards and improve quality of life
The observance highlights key areas such as fire safety
"Building safety isn't just about following codes and regulations—it's about creating secure
comfortable spaces where people can thrive"
"Building safety extends beyond just the physical structure," said Scott Asner
and awareness of potential hazards such as carbon monoxide or fire risks
Creating safe spaces is a shared responsibility
While property owners are tasked with ensuring their buildings meet all safety standards
tenants should also be proactive in their own safety by following building rules
With over 6,000 apartment units across 11 states under the management of Eighteen Capital Group
Asner underscored the following five ways in which both property owners and tenants can ensure safer
Regular Inspections and Maintenance – Property owners should ensure that regular inspections of the building's structure
and HVAC units are conducted to avoid costly repairs and ensure safety
Fire Safety Awareness – Both tenants and property owners should have working smoke detectors
Regularly check alarms and ensure they are properly maintained
Secure Entryways and Windows – Improving security with better locks and surveillance systems can significantly reduce safety risks for tenants and visitors
Emergency Plans and Resources – Property owners should provide tenants with clear emergency procedures for situations such as fires
including contact numbers and evacuation routes
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability – In addition to safety
promoting energy efficiency by maintaining proper insulation and upgrading windows can reduce potential hazards related to extreme weather
"Building safety isn't just about following codes and regulations—it's about creating secure
comfortable spaces where people can thrive," Asner added
"Whether you're a property owner or a tenant
there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and those around you
National Building Safety Month is a great reminder of just how important it is to be proactive about safety in our homes and workplaces."

Scott Gertner, one of the most prominent figures in Houston’s music and nightlife scenes, has unexpectedly passed away
A brief statement by the musician’s family did not share a cause of death
and stated that funeral details would be shared soon
[Update: A representative for the family tells CultureMap that Gertner died of natural causes
luring people in with live grooves and a mouth-watering menu
In my previous life as a nightlife reporter
Gertner was the person I usually contacted whenever I needed intel on jazz clubs in the city
I surprised him one day with a 12-inch single he recorded in the late ‘80s for CBS Records
a lost item I picked up at a nearby record store.)
But I know I’m not the only person who has sparkling memories featuring Gertner
I reached out to a few friends and asked them what they’ll remember the most about the late
film critic/radio personality: “We had many fantastic CBS Radio Houston Christmas parties at the Skybar
Scott was always the most gracious host and fun performer
two of my close friends went to high school at HSPVA with Scott
Scott was playing at the old Ruggles on lower Westheimer
back when everyone cruised that area on the weekends
my friends and I would scream ‘Gertner’ out the car window
like he was going to hear us and come out and say hi
The boys were so excited Scott had a real gig.”
music producer/former Skybar bartender: “When I tell you I wouldn’t know half the people I know — I wouldn’t have made a good deal of the money I’ve made in my life — and not have had many of the experiences (too many!) that made me who I am if not for this man
“But there’s so much more to remember about the guy
I soaked up so much game about music and nightlife
a course more valuable than any class I could’ve taken
To know him personally was a privilege not to be taken lightly; he’d hit you with that smile that always said everything his words didn’t
he supported me in and outside the nightlife
we’d still text each other on our birthdays since they were 11 days apart
I was always welcome wherever his venue was located and
jazz guitarist: “One of the first times I heard Scott play was back in the heyday of Cody’s
when he was on bass and vocals with Paul English’s incredible band
That group was something special — Paul on piano
Kirk Whalum and Johnny Torres on saxophones
and Scott bringing his unique energy and voice to the mix
Scott held down Wednesday nights at Cody’s in the Village
Scott was making more money that one night than the club owner was making all week
That’s the kind of draw and charisma he had
Scott opened the Skybar at the original Cody’s location on Montrose
and I was honored when he hired my Flamenco Jazz trio to play a Wednesday night series there
We alternated Wednesdays with Joe Carmouche’s excellent trio — great times
He also was the gracious host for the CD release party for my first album
way before Skybar and those Village Cody’s Wednesdays
Scott and I played together at the legendary Blues Jam with Ardis Turner (RIP) at Live Bait on Greenbriar — me on guitar and Scott on bass
“There was a weird kind of synchronicity with Scott — I’d run into him all over Houston
The last time I saw Scott was at the Rhythm Room last year
He was extremely interested in hearing details about some health issues that I had firsthand knowledge about
Scott Gertner enriched Houston’s music world

the next inning we put the ball in play and put pressure on them and put up 4 to take control
Luke Lawson and Conner Williams really stepped up.”

“These guys had a lot of pressure on them because of our record

They have held each other accountable on and off the field

Scott dazzle on defense as Cards sweep 2nd doubleheader in 5 daysMay 5th
ST. LOUIS -- Even after making one of those hustling, hurtling, classic Nolan Arenado plays -- one where he wound up in the laps of a slightly startled family
somewhat tangled in the netting and with Juan Soto’s foul pop securely in his glove -- the superstar third baseman had a somewhat stunning declaration to make
"That was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen,” said Arenado
the owner of 10 Gold Gloves and six Platinum Gloves
Humble as ever, Arenado, of course, wasn’t talking about the headlong play he made in the eighth inning of the Cardinals' 5-4 defeat of the Mets -- a win that guaranteed them their second doubleheader sweep in a five-day stretch
Instead, Arenado was referring to 5-foot-11 center fielder Victor Scott II leaping as high as he could and reaching up over the wall to rob Soto of a home run in the fourth inning of a game that was highlighted by the Cards' stellar defense
"It was awesome, and I told [Scott] that was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen,” Arenado raved. “I played with Adam Jones in the WBC, and he made a play like that
Those are the two best plays I’ve ever seen made in center field.”
The Cardinals came into Sunday easily the MLB leader in outs above average with 21, well ahead of the Astros (14)
They strengthened their standing with the gems provided by Scott
who made a sliding catch in the gap to end a fourth-inning threat
Scott didn’t hesitate when asked where the home run robbery of Soto ranked on his list of stellar plays
“There’s no other feeling [to compare] than to that
The defense, combined with Alec Burleson’s two-run home run and Michael McGreevy’s 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowed the Cardinals to cap Sunday with two wins over the surging Mets. They stopped a nine-game skid to New York with a gritty 6-5 win in Game 1 and then came from behind to take the nightcap
In the storied history of the rivalry between the Cardinals and Mets
And the last time the Cardinals swept the Mets in St
Louis had been slightly more than 50 years ago (July 5
"I don’t care who the team is because it’s really hard to sweep doubleheaders,” said Burleson
whose two-run blast in the second inning was his long-awaited first homer of the season
especially with a team like that over there
We played a really good defense today and that was a part of it
We pitched really well with McGreevy coming in and we swung the bats enough to win two games.”

whose club also swept a doubleheader from the Reds on Wednesday: “Doubleheaders are tough
and it’s a grind on the guys you are playing in both and the bullpen as well
But I love the fact that these guys are up for the task
who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday
his former teammate at San Clemente High School in Southern California
McGreevy allowed one hit and struck out five to improve to 4-0 in his MLB career
McGreevy talked about how he and Pallante used to look at Arenado’s retired number at El Toro High School in Lake Forest
and contemplate the greatness of the third baseman
McGreevy looked on in awe as Arenado made a hard-charging play where he barehanded a ball for an out and later when he careened into the crowd for another catch
"His high school is 20 minutes from me and Pallante’s [school] and you see Arenado’s number retired and you think about how cool it is that a guy like that grew up close to me,” McGreevy raved
sharing a field and cracking jokes with him.”
Arenado was horrified when he scared a small girl with his diving catch tumbling into the stands
but I probably frightened her with that whole situation,” he said
Thank God for that and I was able to make the play.”

A fire at Captain Scott's Seafood Restaurant at 71 Tupper Road in Sandwich early Sunday morning
Chief John Burke said a call to report white smoke coming from the back of the building came in at 5:27 a.m
and firefighters began arriving to the scene two minutes later
They found fire in the back of the building and the basement
A working fire assignment was requested to bring in resources from Bourne Fire Department
The building was empty at the time of the fire
Burke said the cause is not believed to be suspicious
Crews backed out of the building when they noticed the floor on the first floor become unsteady
A second alarm fire assignment was then requested to bring in more help from Joint Base Fire Department
Sandwich firefighters noticed the natural gas regulator for the building had burned off
Burke noted that National Grid then had to come to shut the gas off underground
A third alarm was requested to bring in units from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire and Onset Fire District
followed by a fourth alarm around 11:30 a.m
to bring in resources from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire again and Hyannis Fire Department
The fire was extinguished with the help of an excavator to peel apart the building provided by Pastore Excavation
Providence Canteen provided drinks and coffee to firefighters
The State Fire Marshal’s Special Operations Rehab Truck was also on hand to support firefighter rehab
One firefighter was treated and released on scene for heat exhaustion
Burke estimated that damages could be $1 million or more
The State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause with Sandwich fire investigators

He had a deep passion for learning and was always curious about the world
He had a way of elevating every interaction
and wisdom to the table — often all at once
Scott spent his time in the service of others
serving as a temple worker and a variety of church callings
Scott was a strong advocate for Organ Donation and worked as a volunteer for Organ Donor Services in both Washington and Utah for many years
Scott lived a full and happy life and blessed the lives of all those fortunate enough to know him
Kirsten; his three children and their partners
and Lauren (Christopher) Benton; his beloved grandson
and deep faith will continue to inspire all who knew him
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Utah chapter of Organ Donor Services https://www.donorconnect.life/
I worked with Scott a few years back in scouting
I was always impressed how he truly magnified the calling he had

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals boast one of the most time-honored rivalries in Major League Baseball
While the two teams are presently trending in opposite directions – the Cubs have been one of the game's best teams thus far in 2025
while the Cardinals are presently below .500 – there's a compelling rivalry "writ small" in center field
There's another layer to things when two natural rivals have promising young players manning the same position and, in this instance, enjoying breakout campaigns at the same time. We speak of the emerging Interstate-55 rivalry in center field between Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs and Victor Scott II of the Cardinals
This seems a timely matter because Crow-Armstrong right now ranks third in the National League in WAR with a mark of 2.0, meaning he's been one of the best overall players in baseball thus far. Scott, meantime, is 10th on that same list with a WAR of 1.4, and during Sunday's doubleheader sweep of the New York Mets
he went a combined 3 for 6 with a pair of walks and this miracle robbery that wound up mattering quite a bit insofar as the final score is concerned:
VICTOR SCOTT II WITH ONE OF THE BEST CATCHES EVER! pic.twitter.com/jgX1R96qgy
Crow-Armstrong profiles as the superior player right now and thus moving forward
was consistently a higher-ranked prospect in the minors
and is more than a year younger than Scott
those substantial advantages don't mean all is decided
It's fully within the range of possibilities that Scott closes the gap between them or even surpasses Crow-Armstrong at some point
his multi-faceted strides in 2025 come after a deeply disappointing 2024
he was pressed into regular duty by injuries
in part because he'd been skipped past Triple-A entirely
Louis and didn't fare much better after being demoted to Memphis
Scott relocated to the Cardinals' training complex in Jupiter
and devoted himself to improving in the field and at the plate
He now gets better reads in center and trusts his first step
incorporating a stride has made him far more athletic
and he's realized impressive strides at pitch recognition
and – critically for someone with his speed – he has an OBP of .356
drawing walks in 10.1% of his plate appearances
Scott leads the majors in bunt singles with five
he's stolen 12 bases in as many attempts this season
and through the first 84 games of his big-league career he's yet to hit into a double play
As for PCA, our own Matt Snyder recently explored his ongoing breakout and noted that Crow-Armstrong's value in the field and on the bases has never been in doubt
and 2025 to date has yielded very encouraging returns on that front
PCA has 20 extra-base hits in 35 games and a 140 OPS+
He's backed up the thump with a high quality of batted balls
especially when it comes to his knack for finding the barrel (he's in the 78th percentile among big-league hitters in terms of registering the ideal combination of exit velocity and launch angle off the bat)
There are concerns about PCA's extreme tendency to chase pitches outside the strike zone and his low walk rate
but his capacity to punish the ball is legitimate
and he's hit into zero double plays this season
The good news for PCA and Scott is that even when their bats aren't at peak
their elite defense and base-running provide an all-but-unshakeable foundation of value that make them "high floor" players
Statcast puts Crow-Armstrong in the 99th and 100th percentile of base-running and fielding value
Scott is in the 99th and 95th percentile in those measures
Scott is in the 100th percentile in sprint speed
then they're All-Star-caliber in Scott's case and MVP-caliber in PCA's case
let's pair Scott's defensive highlight above with one from PCA
This is something the writer likes to call "The Andruw Jones Experience." It's a catch the difficulty of which is submerged within the mellow smoothness with which the fielder made it
Not only did PCA make a catch that another big-league center fielder failed to make on an effectively identical batted ball
but PCA also did it without lunging or laying out for it
He made it look more routine than highlight-worthy
the miracle of technicolor television sometimes punishes PCA (and Scott
A fly-catcher with lesser range – and almost all fly-catchers have lesser range than Crow-Armstrong does – makes the tape because he requires a crowd-rousing dive to reach that ball
but it says here that slick-fielding speedsters who man center and employ some daring on the bases are perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing sub-genre of ballplayers
On top of providing quality baseball entertainment
Consider it a tidy bonus that they play for time-honored arch rivals who share a division and swaths of the same territory
but this debate figures to be a years-long one and perhaps an ever-changing one
who currently occupies centerfield for the St
Scott not only prevented the Cardinals from falling behind a few runs earlier in the game
but he also came up with the biggest hit of the night to send the Cards home happy
New York Mets slugger Juan Soto sent a rocket to straightaway centerfield where Scott leaped up against the wall and pulled back the ball for the out
VICTOR SCOTT II!!!He shows off the hops to rob Juan Soto of a homer! pic.twitter.com/BDHiUPu6Am
Scott came through in the clutch with an RBI double to right centerfield off of Max Kranick
which ended up being the eventual game-winning run
Scott struggled at the plate as a rookie with a measly .179 batting average
Through the first 31 games of the 2025 season
Scott is slashing .286/.356/.419 with two homers and 15 RBI
while going a perfect 11 for 11 on stolen base attempts

American workers often grapple with various concerns about whether they will be financially secure when the time arrives.
Many are concerned with the cost of health care and the long-term survival of the federal Social Security program.
While Medicare becomes available to Americans at age 65
the federal program does not cover all medical expenses
leaving retirees to account for additional costs
Author and New York University professor Scott Galloway offers some compelling thoughts about the role Medicare and Social Security play in Americans' retirement future
💵💰Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter💰💵
A report from the Social Security Administration (SSA) describes Social Security as a social insurance program designed to provide retirees with a lifetime annuity that adjusts for inflation
Scott Galloway argues that the system has a fundamental flaw in how benefits are distributed.
He contends that a portion of current recipients may not actually need the financial assistance but continue to receive it regardless
Senior citizens represent the wealthiest generation in history
During the SXSW Conference & Festivals on March 10
at the "'Prof G Markets' Live with Scott Galloway and Ed Elson" event
he emphasized concerns about wealth redistribution.
He pointed out that approximately $1.2 trillion is transferred annually from younger generations — who are facing greater financial challenges than previous ones — to older individuals
reinforcing what he sees as a systemic issue with Social Security
Also important is that Social Security faces the possibility of reduced benefits by 2033 if no legislative action is taken to fix the fact that the federal program will run out of money in its trust funds that year.
Part B covers outpatient and preventive care
requiring a monthly premium of $185 in 2025
Another choice for seniors is Medicare Advantage
which is administered by private insurance companies
It typically includes the same benefits as Parts A and B
Medicare Part D focuses on prescription medications
with costs varying significantly based on an individual's specific health care needs
New York University professor and author Scott Galloway explains the two federal payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare
Image source: Nguyen/NurPhoto via Getty Images
In his book "The Algebra of Wealth," Galloway explains that Medicare and Social Security are funded by the only two federal payroll taxes
with half of that — 6.2% — deducted directly from your paycheck
Social Security taxes are subject to a wage cap
earnings above $160,200 are exempt from further taxation under this program for the remainder of the year
Medicare tax is 2.9% and follows a similar split between employers and employees
though they tend to be relatively low and have set limits
payroll taxes are unavoidable — they apply even to wages contributed to a 401(k).
these taxes can feel particularly burdensome
as they must cover both the employer and employee share
amounting to over 15% on the first $160,000 of earnings
there’s no escaping payroll taxes," Galloway wrote
high earners convert income to capitalGalloway also writes that higher earners convert much more income to capital during their working years to live a high quality of life during employment and retirement
A household with $2 million in assets and an annual spending of $500,000 enjoys a luxurious lifestyle
far beyond what a household earning $500,000 per year can afford
as only $250,000 remains after taxes for expenses
Even with substantial monthly expenditures exceeding $40,000
they manage to set aside $500,000 in savings annually
If this amount is invested at an 8% return for a decade, it could grow into an investment portfolio worth nearly $8 million, generating over $600,000 in annual income, taxed at capital gains rates.
While top earners do face high income tax rates, the impact on their lifestyle is minimal, and their ability to build wealth remains largely unaffected, as they can channel significant portions of their earnings into investments.
"It’s called 'capitalism' and not 'laborism' for a reason," Galloway wrote. "Wealth comes from capital investment, not labor wages. Once you are able to convert significant amounts of your wages to investment capital, you make the jump to light speed."

With three podiums and two Fast Six appearances, now headed toward a track where he’s once started on pole and finished no worse than fourth place in his last four visits, the newest Arrow McLaren driver’s performance is the unquestioned surprise of the year
Pete and only Sunday narrowly recorded his second top 10 of the season (10th)
The drivers entered this weekend sitting second (Kyle Kirkwood)
fourth (Rosenqvist) and fifth (Dixon) finished 11th
“Pure speed, man. I think those guys are just executing. They’re just knocking good lap times out, qualifying well, then executing in the race," said Scott McLaughlin after starting alongside Palou on the front row Sunday before finishing a distant third
Props to (Palou’s strategist and Chip Ganassi Racing team manager Barry Wanser) and the team that they run on the No
And obviously they’ve got a really good driver
I think Alex is one of the best racecar driver I’ve ever come across
'I was a bit lonely': Alex Palou marvels in 'best weekend in IndyCar' after dominant Barber win
McLaughlin’s dogged belief in the face of an historic start to a season from the two-time defending IndyCar champion, admittedly, isn’t surprising, in a paddock where ‘What’s it going to take to dethrone Alex Palou?’ questions began moments into the season opening post-race news conference — yep
the questions began midway through the Chip Ganassi Racing driver’s 2023 campaign
particularly in the midst of his stretch of four wins in five starts in May and June of that year
who in the most recent chapter of his career won three straight V8 Supercars championships for Roger Penske before being offered a ride in IndyCar
entered last year’s season finale only marginally joking that his own championship hopes were but a move away
being down 50 points with a maximum of 54 possible on a weekend and five granted to those who start a race
McLaughlin joked that move would involve locking Palou in a trackside port-a-let and tossing the key in the garbage
Where we stand: IndyCar 2025 drivers championship, Rookie of the Year, Leaders Circle standings
We’ve got to just keep keeping on and being at the front as much as we can,” McLaughlin said
“That was a solid race for us with the pace we had
and if you want to build a championship campaign
That turns out to be a really good job and solid
all you can do is try to be at the top of yours.”
Though McLaughlin declined to say precisely where he believed he
3 Chevy crew and Team Penske could improve
the answer may more so be in the layout of the schedule
which again this year is oval heavy on the back end
Included in that stretch is an Iowa Speedway doubleheader where McLaughlin secured his first career IndyCar oval win in Race 1 a year ago and took third place less than 24 hours later
a race previously run in August that shifted to June this year
was the site of a runner-up finish from pole a year ago
and during another oval doubleheader weekend in 2024 at the Milwaukee Mile
McLaughlin started Race 1 on pole and finished Race 2 in victory lane
In the wake of his Penske teammate Josef Newgarden’s IndyCar oval domination — the two-time defending Indy 500 winner won five straight ovals from 2022-23 and eight of 10 across a stretch in 2021-23 — McLaughlin began to tug at Newgarden’s "IndyCar oval king" crown in the back half of last year
A surprising start: Christian Lundgaard has a chance to prove he's an IndyCar title contender
Facing a comfortable championship leader in Palou whose yet to win on an oval — with seven top-5 finishes in his last 12 oval starts but just four career oval podiums — rattling off a streak of oval victories could be McLaughlin’s winning ticket
to be enough to have drivers not named Alex Palou to win all of this year’s oval slate — Palou didn’t record a single win over the final nine races a year ago and still won the title by 31 points
Whereas four drivers each won two races during that 2024 closing stretch that allowed Palou to largely rattle off top 5s and tread water with his championship cushion
one of his competitors is going to have to outright snatch that Astor Cup from his grasp
You’ve just got to capitalize,” McLaughlin said
“We know where we can improve; different facets that I can’t really expose
I think if we just keep knocking on the door
You’ve just got to try and keep knocking on the door.”

This Sunday's cover story is a behind the scenes look at how Churchill Downs starts the Kentucky Derby
At the helm of it all is the racetrack's head starter
While the starting gate has been a fixture at the Run for the Roses for nearly a century
it hasn't always been a part of the Kentucky Derby
This story is designed to be an intimate look behind the scenes with the man who's in charge of telling the horses when to "go." It's also a look back in time at how an electric gate with stalls became the norm that it is in the modern racing world

Here's how I went about telling this story
This story actually started more than a year ago, as I working on a story about the differences between the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 and how it operates today in the 2020s. Jessica Whitehead, the curator of collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum
told me the first Kentucky Derby didn't have a starting gate
I couldn't believe that for the first 50 years of the Kentucky Derby's 150-year history
the procedure for how the race started wasn't regulated
something that I'd always seen as a fixture of the horseracing industry became much more interesting to me

I was really glad that he was as enthusiastic about showing me the ropes of the starting gate as I was about learning about it
He was kind enough to invite me out to Churchill Downs in early April
so that photographer Matt Stone and I could observe how much care goes in to making sure the horses are comfortable in the starting gate
I was able to watch several horses at several different stages of comfort with the gate
Some merely walked up and stood in the stall with an open door
while others were comfortable enough to be fully inside and then gallop out once the gate opened

Scott Frost was one of two FBS hires this off season to return to a place he previous led successfully
joining Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia as proof that you can return home
Frost agreed to a five-year deal to return to Orlando to lead the Knights for a second time
and UCF released details of that contract today
Matt Baker shares that Frost's deal runs through January of 2030
and includes guaranteed annual compensation of $3.9 million this fall
The next several years of his contract will pay him as follows:
Frost is able to earn an additional contract year for making any bowl game at a rate of $5.25 million
also his first year as a head coach as he inherited team coming off a winless campaign under George O'Leary and interim head coach Danny Barrett
Frost inked a five-year deal in December 2015 that ran through 2020 that paid him a $1.7 million salary
Coming off an 0-12 season prior to his arrival
Frost led the team to a significant 6-win improvement
going 6-7 after their Cure Bowl loss in 2016
UCF signed Frost to an extension through 2021
raising his annual salary to an even $2 million while giving his salary pool a slight $50k increase as well
the $3.9 million he's set to make this year is actually remarkably close to what he earned in his final season leading his alma mater at Nebraska
He started off making $5 million annually in Lincoln
but terms were adjusted to $4 million in his final season in 2022
UCF will open the 2025 season with three straight home games against Jacksonville State
