3:30 AM MDTBy Western Nebraska Community CollegeMCCOOK – It wasn’t the way the Western Nebraska Community College softball team wanted to end their season
but finishing runner-up at the Region IX tournament after not making the tournament a year ago
goes a long ways in the growth and improvement of the team this season
WNCC needed to win twice to claim a regional title on Sunday in McCook
who set a school record of most wins in a season with 47
captured the Region IX title with a 9-1 win over WNCC
The Cougars finished the season at 27-25 and had many highs to the season
Those highs and things to remember about the fight of the team included running off 14 straight wins in April as well as heading into next season on a 20-game streak of holding their opponents to under 10 runs
The other thing that stands out is last season
the Cougars failed to make the regional tournament and what this team did
after being 13-23 at one point and then going 14-2 to end the season makes this season special
And the run to the championship game was unique
The Cougars earned the right to play in the regional tournament title game by topping Otero College 11-5 in the first round on Friday
The Cougars then fell in a heartbreaking 8-inning 2-1 contest to McCook on Saturday
WNCC responded to eliminate Otero 11-3 late Saturday
Sunday’s contest was one where WNCC had plenty of base runners through the five innings
but couldn’t get the right ball to drop or go through the infield as the McCook defense made plays to thwart WNCC runs
started the game strong as Randi Mitchell led off the game with a triple and scored on a Kallie Stocking groundout
McCook came back with a run in the first to tie the game and then scored a run in the second to go in front 2-1
It was 3-1 after a run in the fourth and the Indians put the game away with a 6-run fifth inning to claim the regional title
Mykah Klumpp walked and Tori Travers got a single with one out
Mitchell led off after being hit by a pitch
The fifth inning saw Alyssa Albaugh reach on a bunt
but she was left stranded after some near miss balls going into the outfield for hits were scooped up

WNCC will now face McCook on championship Sunday and will need to beat the Indians twice to punch their ticket to the NJCAA national tournament that will be played May 19-24 in Yuma
the two teams will play for the title at 1:30 p.m
The first game of the day against McCook was a barnburner as both defenses were stellar
Both teams scored a run in the third innings and the other six regulation innings were scoreless
WNCC had base runners in the first and second innings
but couldn’t get the big hit to score the runners
Randi Mitchell got a single followed by Tina Horton getting a line drive

McCook came back to score once in the third on two singles and a sacrifice fly for the 1-1 game

Travers later scored to make it 7-3 and Alyssa Albaugh scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-3
WNCC added two runs in the sixth as Mykah Klumpp got a 2-out double followed by Huffaker earning a walk

while the Cougars have seven Region IX titles to their credit
the first in 2008 and the last one in 2019
This will be the two teams’ third time meeting for a Region IX title

The City Of Scottsbluff Public Works Department is advising the public of an upcoming closure
Director Mark Bohl tells KNEB News that work is planned for Monday to replace some sidewalk tiles on the pedestrian bridge that spans Highway 26 between Avenue B and 5th Avenue
The bridge will be closed to foot traffic until the repairs are complete
City of Scottsbluff crews made quick repairs for a popular feature here in town
the pedestrian bridge spanning highway 26 and surrounding portions of the Monument Pathway closed to public use
Public Works Director Mark Bohl says the closure was needed for planned work o replace some sidewalk tiles
He advised KNEB News that as of yesterday afternoon
the work was complete and the facilities are now once again open for the public
the parking lot at Uptown Scottsbluff has been regularly filled and last week’s opening of TJ Maxx is sure to add to the influx of customers
continues to pursue letters of intent with national tenants though its president did say the mall will be listed for sale
Fresh off the successes of the openings of TJ Maxx
Five Below and a new store front for The Buckle
RockStep Capital intends on listing Uptown Scottsbluff for sale by summer
with many shoppers saying they were pleased with the quality of the store
It is the latest offering to join Uptown Scottsbluff
which saw Five Below open in November and Ross Dress for Less
but they are always doing great so I am assuming that they are great,” Andy Weiner
“Those four tenants will attract people from at least 75 miles away
People will come in for that so it’s a great improvement to the property
a great improvement to the quality of life for Scottsbluff and for the region.”
Weiner said RockStep will continue its efforts to bring in national retailers and restaurants to Uptown Scottsbluff and the adjoining former Kmart property
RockStep Capital officials continue to work to secure three national retailers who want to be located at Uptown Scottsbluff
though he declined to go into specifics on those retailers
He said that RockStep Capital is working with the potential tenants on letters of intent
which he said is a process that takes roughly six months to nine months
While acknowledging that RockStep Capital does intend on listing Uptown Scottsbluff for sale
it will continue to work on securing the national tenants
The final steps of that process could depend on the buyer — who could finish that relationship or RockStep Capital could enter into a management agreement with a buyer
If a buyer doesn’t step forward in the near future
“then we’ll just do that ourselves and continue to operate Uptown Scottsbluff.”
Weiner said he is hopeful that a local or regional buyer would be interested in the mall property
saying RockStep is open to a professional management or leasing agreement
“We’ve owned the property for a long time ..
and we’re at the end of our investment period,” he said when asked about the company’s decision to list it
“We target a hold of five to seven years and we want to go ahead and return on our investment to our investors
Let somebody else take this to the next level
RockStep has gone through multiple redevelopment projects
and it has specifically invested a tremendous amount of money in the redevelopment of Uptown Scottsbluff and the work to establish the sales tax that is helping fund redevelopment is a significant benefit to a future developer
The future of the former Kmart store remains in progress
with Weiner saying that RockStep Capital is also open to the possibility that at least a portion of the store and the adjoining shopping complex could be demolished
The Kmart property has already been listed for sale
RockStep Capital is interested in securing a local purchaser for the property
Progress does continue on that former Kmart property
When RockStep Capital officials presented redevelopment plans to the Scottsbluff City Council in May 2024 for the former Kmart property
said one national company had signed a letter of intent to locate in an outparcel
Weiner would only state that national coffee shop company has indicated its interest in locating on the property and RockStep is working with two fast food restaurant companies
RockStep Capital continues to be committed to supporting reviving local malls and shopping centers because of their importance in local communities
He said it is now offering it’s HomeTown America Fund I
which he said offers an investment opportunity for a minimum investment of $100,000 to help local investors acquire and manage shopping centers located in hometowns across the U.S.
The goal is to encourage local investment in communities
The retail industry continues to face challenges
Weiner acknowledged with rising construction prices — which were already significantly higher and will continue to increase with proposed tariffs — higher interest rates and people starting to slow down their spending due to uncertainty
there are concerns that the nation is heading toward a recession
there continues to be interest in the local market
“It’s very powerful,” he said of the interest in the Scottsbluff region and it’s draw particularly after the recent store openings
“And there are other tenants who want to follow them.”
