Teamsters Local Union No. 174
With an expired contract and negotiations at a standstill
Teamsters Local 174 members at Swissport could strike as soon as May 6
The number of aircraft moving through SeaTac airport could come to a screeching halt as soon as Tuesday
after 150 Teamsters working for Swissport vote to authorize a strike against their employer
The group of Teamsters Local 174 members work in the critical role as aircraft fuelers in a grueling and safety-critical job
a majority of the aircraft passing through SeaTac International Airport would be left without a way to get fuel
*Airlines impacted by a strike would include: DELTA
Negotiations have been ongoing for two months
While contract sticking points of course include economic issues
workers’ other demands are for basic human needs like a clean lunchroom
and the opportunity to wash off the jet fuel from their clothing at the end of the day
Even these simple requests are ignored by a management team whose wage structure barely exceeds SeaTac minimum wage for many workers
Swissport is the largest provider of airport ground services in the world
and that is especially true in an industry like this one where a strike would cause hardship for so many people,” said Teamsters Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks
that decision ultimately lies with Swissport management
who has a responsibility to come back to the bargaining table with an offer that respects our members
They work a physically demanding job in every type of weather
and Swissport’s success is entirely built upon their backs
If Swissport does not get serious about this contract
our members will be voting on Tuesday on whether to strike.”

SEATAC, Wash. — Travelers will soon need a REAL ID in order to get on a domestic flight
including to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
The rush to beat the May 7 deadline is creating long waits at many Seattle-area licensing offices
and the TSA reports it is preparing for potential backups as officers will assist those with and without the accepted identification
The TSA warns that people who don't have the acceptable form of ID could face delays
People needing to get a REAL ID before their next trip
whether it's for Mother's Day or summer travel
are encouraged to prepare for wait times of an hour or more at licensing offices across Puget Sound
People in line told KOMO News crews on Wednesday that appointments have been hard to come by and booked out in some places by up to 60 days
and I couldn’t even get an appointment out there," added Alycia Beck as she left the West Seattle licensing office
The Washington Department of Licensing reports increased demand for people trying to get their Enhanced Driver's License or Enhanced ID
They are a new requirement for all domestic flights on or after May 7 under the Real ID Act as a post-9/11 security measure
It takes up to 10 business days for the DOL to mail out the new
ALSO SEE | As REAL ID requirement nears, some call for another delay
The TSA clarified it will not accept the paper
but the agency will take an enhanced driver's license expired up to a year ago
DOL Spokesperson Thomas Charlson explained another way to plan ahead now is for travelers to take inventory of the ID they do have that may work at airport security
"You also have other options, including a U.S. passport, U.S. Military ID, tribal ID," he said. View all acceptable forms of ID here
"If you are not flying soon, there is no need to rush to get an enhanced driver license/ID card," Charlson wrote in an email to KOMO. "If you are flying soon, check to see if you have a U.S. passport or another REAL ID-compliant document before getting an enhanced license/ID card."
are prepared to help travelers without a REAL ID by offering other identity verification procedures
"Is TSA worried about the backups that might cause if people are searching for all different types of identification?" KOMO News's Jackie Kent asked
"We’ll make sure that we’re staffed and able to accommodate those who are prepared and those who are not prepared
We’re just encouraging them to arrive early to be prepared for additional screening and
run the risk of being turned away if they cannot verify their identity," TSA Spokesperson Lorie Dankers responded

(KOMO) — A judge dismissed two misdemeanor cases against a woman who was accused of breaching a TSA checkpoint at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and boarding a flight to Hawaii without a ticket last month
According to filings in the SeaTac municipal court
the woman is not competent to stand trial and did not understand the nature of the court proceedings against her
Port of Seattle police released body-camera videos of the woman’s arrest in response to a records request by KOMO News
RELATED | Unticketed passenger arrested for going through TSA in Seattle, boarding flight to Hawaii
Her first arrest happened on Christmas Eve after a flight crew on a Delta Airlines flight to Honolulu noticed the woman did not have an assigned seat as the plane was taxiing to the runway
and the woman walked off the airplane and then went to a bathroom
A police report notes a Delta employee followed the woman until an officer caught up to her in the bathroom
The video captured the following exchange:
“Are you ok?” the Port of Seattle police officer asked the woman
“We’re just trying to figure out something that is going on,” the officer said
The woman told the officer there had been a mix-up over which seat she was in on the flight
The officer questioned how the woman got to the secure side of the airport without a ticket
to which she replied that her boyfriend had bought a ticket and escorted her to the gate
The report notes the woman gave multiple names to the officers and appeared confused about her age and date of birth
The woman gave the officers a phone number for her boyfriend
but when police called the man he denied knowing her
the Delta flight had to be emptied and swept by a K-9 to rule out a bomb threat
The officers used a fingerprint scanner to identify the woman
Investigators then checked airport surveillance cameras and tracked the woman’s movements when she had gone through the TSA checkpoint the night before
“I watched the female duck underneath a line dividing stanchion and bypass the portion of TSA screening that checks ID and boarding pass
The female then proceeded through a metal detector and was screened before she proceeded to the secure side of the airport,” the police report states
The woman was booked into jail and later released
the same woman was seen by a TSA agent near a checkpoint at SEA
Officers contacted her again near a door to the airport
and she said she was trying to go home to California
She made statements about being in the rap industry:
"I was asking him to buy me a ticket because I was telling you I contacted some rappers that were in the industry because I am also a rapper
and I think that I contacted some pedophiles
and I said I’m interested in signing to your label
and they said they were child molesters and that they wanted to molest my children.”
Police told the woman she was trespassing if she was there without legitimate business
She was booked into jail again for criminal trespass
SeaTac city prosecutors filed two trespassing cases against the woman and ordered a competency evaluation
which determined she was not able to understand the proceedings against her or assist in her own defense
a judge dismissed the cases without prejudice
Because the charges against the woman were dropped
KOMO News is not naming her or showing her face
Bellevue has introduced a new shuttle service to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac)
providing convenient transportation options for both visitors and locals
This initiative is a collaboration between the Port of Seattle
making it an accessible option for anyone needing to travel to or from the airport
The shuttle service runs from Bellevue to SeaTac from 4 a.m
Families traveling with children under the age of two can ride for free
Riders can be picked up and dropped off at five designated hotel locations in Bellevue
This arrangement allows those not staying at these hotels to utilize the shuttle service
enhancing accessibility for a wider audience
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Pacific Northwest
offering flights to 33 international destinations on 27 different airlines
the airport serves as a critical hub for travelers heading to the region’s tech centers
The shuttle service is set to begin in November
offering a reliable transportation alternative for anyone traveling between Bellevue and SeaTac
With its hourly departures and straightforward pricing
this service is designed to meet the needs of travelers looking for efficient and cost-friendly transit options
Sound Transit charges $3.25 and runs every 30-60 minutes
@Navin- all those hotels are easily walkable to the transit center
Parking at one if the airport car parking lots can be very cheap
This is for individuals that live downtown or a staying in a hotel
I’m sure it will be super convenient for those in or near hotels
We live around Newport Hills and recently used LYFT for to and from SEA for $65/70 respectively (including tax and tip)…for the 2 of us door to door service is our preferred way to go right now
There’s virtually NO convenient transit service to get to the park and ride
SeaTac is ONE of the busiest airports in the PNW
What other airport in the PNW comes close?
Having options is good; freedom to choose is good; positive attitude is good
As a single traveler staying at the Hyatt Regency
it was definitely easier and more affordable getting to the airport with this service than my ride from the airport with something else
I had booked my pick up at 9:00 am and decided to move it back to 8:00 am Because they run every hour there was no problem with the change
I would definitely use this service in the future

Drive-by shooting in SeaTac injures 1by KOMO News Staff

Imagine passing the time before your next flight playing free retro video games while enjoying delicious small bites like poke nachos and pulled pork sliders and sipping a craft cocktail. Thanks to the vision of H. Lamar Willis, Jonathan Ford, and SSP America
that dream is now a reality at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
Willis and Ford wanted to offer something new for travelers to pass the time at the airport and the result is Sky Gamerz
serving up retro video games alongside a full food and drink menu
offset by pink and green neon lights that match the retro video game aesthetic
Willis and Ford have created the perfect atmosphere to relax and take in some old school entertainment while waiting for a flight
When Willis and Ford initially pitched the idea of a gaming lounge to airports
they cited the large and growing number of people who play video games
“Many people are playing video games on their phones
even if they didn’t play video games as kids,” Willis said
“Tens of millions of people are playing and buying video games every year
and the number keeps growing exponentially.”
Willis said he didn’t want to go too gamey or too nerdy to start
The retro video games available to play at Sky Gamerz are designed to appeal to a wide audience
which represent the largest population of travelers
He plans to eventually add some newer games to Sky Gamerz’ offerings
“Retro is always a safe bet because what we find is that even children like retro video games
and Frogger are all games kids are not familiar with but are excited by
This lowers the stakes and also creates that opportunity to try something new.”
Like Sky Gamerz’ business traveler audience
Willis grew up playing the video games now considered retro
and over the years he graduated to the other systems like Nintendo
and handheld gaming devices like Nintendo Switch
His personal passion shifted into a business venture when he and Ford launched Peach State Gamerz
a company that provides gaming trucks for corporate and individual gaming events around Georgia
Willis’ son (then eight years old) first introduced him to the concept of a gaming truck after coming across one at a birthday party and suggested that Willis and Ford
but after he encountered a gaming truck at a second party
he thought “that is brilliant,” and Peach State Gamerz was born
After successfully operating Peach State Gamerz
Willis and Ford expanded their vision to the world of air travel
They had experience bringing businesses to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and thought a gaming lounge would be a perfect addition to an airport
“There aren’t a lot of entertainment spaces in airports,” Willis said
we wanted to also have a food and beverage element to it
Good food and beverage combined with gaming hasn’t really been done anywhere in the airport space
It’s the first of its kind and the food and aesthetics turned out phenomenally well
It’s an opportunity to be entertained but also have great food.”
Willis and Ford are also set to open a Sky Gamerz at ATL
but SEA is the first location to open its doors
Willis said he pursued a location at SEA due to its deep connections to the gaming world
the largest gaming conference in the world
every major company with a gaming element has a presence in Seattle
which operates restaurants at airports across the U.S.
for five or six years on other ventures before broaching the idea of a Sky Gamerz partnership
“When my partner and I thought about bringing on someone to work with us
SSP was the first company we could think of because they treat their partners fairly
They also held true to our design vision when they built this place out
That was really important to us not to lose the essence of the project,” Willis said
“I am looking forward to being able to serve the SEA community in a way that creates buzz and excitement
I hope this is a launching pad for many other around the country.”
Director of Operations at SEA Airport for SSP
said he is excited to help bring Willis and Ford’s vision to life
“I’m looking forward to guests and travelers coming and just being blown away
The food is made fresh every day in the restaurant
and on top of that we have really cool drinks that our beverage team has come up with that are a perfect fit.”

WATCHYakima airport could be key in relieving SeaTac's future passenger overflowby John Franklin
Officials at the Yakima Air Terminal are hoping that new technologies and a need for overcrowding relief at the Seattle-Tacoma International airport can help grow YKM
the SeaTac will reach it's passenger capacity
"It's only a matter of time before the airlines have to start considering other options," said Robert Hodgman
the Airport Director of the Yakima Air Terminal
Hodgman says that the Yakima Air Terminal might be a part of the solution
it's all based on emerging technology
electric and hydro electric airplanes," Hodgman said
Hodgman suggests that air passengers could take a cheap flight on an electric airplane from their local airport to Yakima
and make a connection from Yakima to their destination
"We have partnered with five other airports
all of them in western Washington," Hodgman said
"And are creating a small electric aviation system."
The airport would have to be updated in order to take a higher amount of passengers
get on electric or hydro-electric airplane and come here
is we are trying to outfit this airport with electric aircraft charging capabilities," said Hodgman
"I think this is going to be industry driven," said Hodgman
"The state is working to try and identify a solution
and they're likely to find their own solutions
so we're talking with various different airlines
being very clear that this is something that we are trying to accommodate
and we'll just have to see how it all goes."
Hodgman says that there are no big steps towards putting this idea into reality
Passengers and Port staff welcomed the newest member of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) team today – Jett the SEA Otter (pronounced S-E-A like the airport code)

Jett’s character and name were carefully selected by community members and SEA employees over a multi-year process
Passengers can expect to see Jett occasionally in the terminal and integrated into publications
and other messaging to enhance your experience
Jett is the most recent addition to SEA Airport’s brand transition that took place in 2020
Worldwide we are recognized by our airport code
and countless more internet searches by travelers
S-E-A is the easiest way for passengers from around the world to identify where they are going
