— Residents in a Seffner neighborhood are looking for solutions after their homes were flooded during Hurricane Milton
Some are doing that by getting involved as government agencies debate what steps to take in the future
the street outside Kevin Cash's home was too flooded to drive on
Cash says he’s hoping something can be done to keep the flooding from happening again
Cash is familiar with doing home improvements
but said his current painting project hits a little differently
“I’ve painted this entire house at least twice over the years
but I’ve never had to do it all at once,” he said
His home was left flooded by Milton in October and he's still recovering and repairing the damage
you know mementos — there’s so many things that got thrown away that just weren’t salvageable,” he said
He’s come a long way since then, but said he still has a lot of work ahead of him. Not only is Cash a homeowner
He’s been reaching out to county leaders and recently attended a Southwest Florida Water Management meeting
where he spoke about potential solutions to the flooding issue
when the downstream flow will not affect anybody," he said of the lake's water level
"Instead of waiting three days before a storm."
Officials with the Southwest Florida Water Management District said they are aware of the flooding issues and have been in contact with Hillsborough County government to establish appropriate lake levels
That will involve staff looking at the previous water levels set on the lake to determine if they should stay the same or be revised
and he would like to make sure his home is safe the next time a storm hits
“They want to keep water out of people’s houses — that’s their goal and I get it," he said
I can live with a flooded yard on a major evet like this
It took about a month for the water in his home to recede with the help of water pumps from the county
He said there isn’t going to be an overnight solution
but he hopes government leaders will weigh their options to help communities like his
“We would just like to see it be more proactive in the future,” Cash said
Several other residents said they were also concerned
and are hoping something gets done before the next storm season
Hillsborough County officials said their stormwater team is closing monitoring water levels in the Shangri-La Lake community
and levels are expected to decrease during the dry season
They also said that portable pumps will be re-installed at the lake as conditions warrant them in the future
– One person was arrested early Friday for attacking an investigator responding after a house fire in Seffner
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews responded just before 6 a.m
to calls of two mobile homes on fire in the area of Robson Avenue near MLK Boulevard
A fire investigator also responded to the scene
the investigator was attacked by a man at the scene
fire crews were kept from attacking the fires
the investigator drew his gun and held the suspect at gunpoint until deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrived and secured the area
firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in 30 minutes
The cause of the fires is under investigation
Officials have not released information on the man arrested or the charges he is facing
— While Hillsborough County is working to pump water out of flooded Seffner neighborhoods
residents say they want more measures taken to prevent this from happening again
In the 27 years Kevin Cash has lived at his Seffner home
he said he has never had to do this much to get to his house
Cash and several of his neighbors say their area is still underwater two weeks after Hurricane Milton hit
Some of our neighbors got out and started chopping the next day — some of the ones that were not under water,” he said
He’s made several trips back and forth from his home to the motel where he’s staying
He said most of his belongings will have to be thrown out
“Anything that’s near or touching the floor is pretty much destroyed,” he explained
It’s been two weeks since Hurricane Milton caused damage to several communities in our area. This Seffner community is still under water with residents not able to get out and others trying to salvage as much as they can. Catch the story at 5pm on @BN9 pic.twitter.com/v7qC77RLhg
Cash said it’s devastating to see so much damage
and he’s asking county leaders to take measures so this doesn’t happen again — starting with the flooding in the lake near his home
“The lake just does not go down in the dry season
and it should have been extremely low before the rain started and that didn’t happen,” he said
Hillsborough County officials say they’ve placed pumps in the area to remove as much water as possible
but there’s a limit to how much they can pump so it doesn’t lead to a downstream pour
he’s got a lot of work ahead of him and he’s looking to get as much help as he can
“I don’t know that we’ve got the resources to do all this work and still be able to afford to stay,” he said
He has had to pack up his most treasured items and float them down to his car one by one
The county stated the pump in this area can pump out 2,000 gallons of water per minute and they’re working to add a second one to help clear this road as soon as possible
Hillsborough County stated Milton brought record levels of flooding to rivers
creeks and ponds. As they work to pump out water in some areas
officials said they also have to make sure other places can retain the extra water as well

There is a palpable excitement within the Seffner Christian Academy football program in 2024
The school built a brand-new field house last year and added a new football field and practice field with a fresh grass surface
making it possible for the Crusaders to play their first-ever night game on campus
The football team is going through some changes on the football field as well
now being a part of the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA)
Head coach Travis Puelo thinks that the playing field will be more even with like-minded schools
despite having to travel a little bit further for road games
All of the teams in the conference are guaranteed to make the playoffs
Seffner Christian has not made the playoffs for the last two seasons
The Crusaders will be a young football team again this season with a 45-man roster and only a handful of seniors on it
The roster has had some instability the past few years with transfers leaving and entering the program at a high rate
Team chemistry has always been a huge part of the program’s success
The players spend a lot of time together off the field
Players and coaches recently went on a mission trip to Tennessee for team bonding activities
The team motto this season is “together we can.”
Puelo likes the talent and depth he has at the skill positions
He thinks that the back seven of his defense will be the team’s major strength
They don’t have a lot of depth and experience up front but will progress throughout the season
Seffner Christian has had a proud tradition of great quarterback play under Puelo
Junior transfer signal caller Gabe Hagan will continue that tradition and distribute the ball and spread the field in this high-powered spread offense
tight spiral; reads the field well; is very cerebral; and has a very strong arm
He isn’t the typical dual threat that the team usually runs with
he’s more of a drop-back passer who can occasionally run
Senior Mahki Cosby will be a key receiver on the outside; junior Bo Knox will anchor down the defense as the Mike linebacker; junior transfer return man Keion Moore will play some running back and slot receiver; senior transfer Wills West will carry the ball and play linebacker; and sophomores Dylon Edwards and Mitchell Pearson will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines
“My expectations are for us to go out and compete
play hard and play disciplined football,” said Puelo
“I believe that gives us an opportunity to be really successful
We talked about getting better at those things in the offseason
I think the players and coaches have embraced the opportunity to get better.”

One of the best high school football coaches in the country is taking off the headset
After 38-years as the Providence Catholic head coach Matt Senffner is stepping down at the end of the current school year
It certainly will be a little strange next year not seeing Senffner on the sideline
since he’s the only head coach the Celtics have ever had
who will also step down as the school’s athletic director
started the school’s football program in 1968
he built the Celtics into a state powerhouse
Providence won its first of nine state titles in 1987 and then really turned things on in the 90s
From 1994-97 the Celtics won 50 consecutive games and four straight state crowns
Senffner compiled a 300-114-1 record in 38 seasons
and retires as Illinois’ all-time winningest head coach
His 2005 team went 5-5 and lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs

It’s been more than 11 years since Jeffrey Bush disappeared in his own home
The 37-year-old was asleep in bed at his home in Seffner, Florida
his brother Jeremy heard a loud crash and ran into Jeffrey’s room only to find a vast crater in place of his sibling’s bed
Jeremy jumped into the hole in a desperate bid to rescue his brother but was swiftly pulled to safety as the ground around him continued to cave in
"The floor was still giving in and the dirt was still going down, but I didn't care. I wanted to save my brother," he told The Guardian at the time
"I could swear I heard him hollering my name to help him."
Video released of Seffner sinkhole that claimed life of Jeff Bushyoutu.be
The house was subsequently fenced off and eventually demolished
with the gaping 20ft-wide cavity filled in with gravel
Specialists at the time pointed out that it was very rare to see such a phenomenon reemerge in the exact same spot
Florida is particularly susceptible to sinkholes as it is home to a high number of underground caverns which are made up of limestone
that state law requires home insurers to provide coverage against the danger
someone had visited the Stevens’ home just weeks before the tragedy to check for sinkholes and other risks on the property
"[The inspector] said there was nothing wrong with the house
a University of South Florida environmental scientist
concluded that it had most likely dropped into a 60ft-tall water-filled void between the sinkhole and the lower bedrock
The body would have sunk much deeper than the gravel pit seen from the street, van Beynen told USA Today
He stressed that any attempt to retrieve it would have been unwise
as the ground around the hole could have collapsed as well
"It would be extraordinarily difficult and incredibly expensive," he noted
that’s little comfort to the Stevens’ who never got to bury their loved-one or

2022SEFFNER ― It initially seemed like a child’s treasure-hunting tale
Aaron Defaria’s kids would bring him what they called diamonds
dug out of the shell-and-rock driveway at their Seffner home
chalked it up to childhood imagination and thought little of it
as the driveway’s shell and rock loosened over the years
his kids began finding more of the shiny objects
and also what looked like tiny stone and iron cannonballs
Those are pieces of Native American jewelry
plus stone shot and iron shot — projectiles used in battles — Cananzey said
and it all likely dates to the three Seminole Wars
“I told him that his driveway looks like a battlefield,” Cananzey said
A previous homeowner had the driveway filled with shell and rock
Cananzey believes the fill was dug from land that once hosted a battle
“It’s a treasure hunt that we want to solve.”
Gary Cananzey observes as archaeologist Rachel Kangas identifies artifacts found on Cananzey’s nephew’s property
[ ANGELICA EDWARDS | Times ]Defaria moved in around eight years ago as a renter and purchased the home this year
said the shells and rocks were there when she purchased it
She never noticed projectiles or pieces of jewelry
The Tampa Bay Times could not locate a permit in Hillsborough County online records for the driveway work
Rachael Kangas from the Florida Public Archaeology Network visited Defaria’s home to verify the authenticity of the objects
Kangas said she’d need to study the shiny rocks more before declaring those pieces of Native American jewelry
but the stone and iron balls could be projectiles that could have been shot from a cannon
She agreed they could date to the Seminole Wars
“So where around here were great battles?” Cananzey said
Most driveway fill comes from licensed mines
a sales manager with Southern Landscaping Materials
said much of Florida’s driveway fill is dug in Punta Gorda mines owned by Weeks Farm and Florida Shell
They then distribute it to wholesalers and contractors throughout the state
“I’ve heard of people finding arrowheads” in their driveway fill
“But nothing as extreme” as what was found at Defaria’s property
Archaeologist Rachel Kangas verifies the authenticity of several artifacts found at a Seffner property
[ ANGELICA EDWARDS | Times ]There is a shell mine in Ruskin
But owner Bill Casey said those artifacts could not have come from his current or past operations
“My shell deposit is nearly 2 million years old,” he said
and artifacts in his mines date to prehistoric times
But a license is not needed to remove less than 10,000 cubic yards of shell from a property
if the fill used for Defaria’s driveway is local
Due to the number of projectiles found in his nephew’s driveway
the Times found and dug out two stone projectiles and an iron one
“A lot of these are shattered into pieces,” Cananzey said
This is not a military cache that was left behind
A large Second Seminole War battle might have taken place less than 10 miles from Defaria’s home
In “The Fort King Road: Then and Now,” author Jeff Hough wrote that he believes nearly 1,000 men fought in a Second Seminole War conflict in 1836 that occurred in what is today the neighborhood of Pemberton Creek
An iron shot (center) lays on the ground at a Seffner property
[ ANGELICA EDWARDS | Times ]Other Seminole Wars battles were fought throughout Tampa Bay
The Dade City Massacre, a battle in which more than 100 U.S. soldiers were killed in an ambush on Dec. 23, 1835, is widely considered the start of the Second Seminole War, for instance.
If his nephew’s driveway fill came from a local source, Cananzey said, other homes might have it, too.
“Maybe they remember who they hired to do it,” Cananzey said. “Maybe if they come forward, we can solve the mystery.”

SEFFNER, Fla. — As our ongoing series “The Price of Protection” continues
the ABC Action News I-Team uncovers how the daughter of a man in guardianship lost her home after speaking out about what she believed was her father’s poor care
The same guardian who sued her for libel and won is currently awaiting trial for exploitation
“I’ve got my four dogs in my car right now and I don’t even know where I’m going to sleep tonight,” said Lesa Martino
The sign taped to what used to be her door was delivered by deputies carrying a court order
That order said Martino can’t return to the home she’s lived in for the past eight years
A $480,000 house… the price of speaking out
It's located in a quiet Seffner subdivision
“My home that I worked for and paid cash for because I had worked so hard.”
The new owner is Gainesville attorney John Hayter
2,900 square foot house at a court-ordered levy sale with a bid of $100,000
“He used ‘judgment credit’ so he didn’t actually dish out $100,000 at the bidding,” Martino said
Zillow estimates the home’s value at $480,000
That judgment credit came from Hayter’s client, disgraced former professional guardian Traci Hudson
She's currently awaiting trial on 20 felony counts after being charged with stealing from elderly people under her care
was appointed guardian of her father Roland Martino
Roland is a retired pharmacist with dementia
my father had bruises on him and he seemed like he was being drugged,” Lesa Martino said
Martino repeatedly complained about her father’s care which led to the guardian obtaining a gag order and later a “no contact order” preventing Martino from communicating with her father and his guardian
Martino filed complaints about her father’s care with multiple agencies
Those agencies included the Florida Department of Children and Families
the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office
Those complaints didn’t result in any charges
“It’s just so unfair … I was a whistle blower to the corruption and then I get punished,” Martino said
Martino also left remarks on social media and reviews on websites referring to Samuel as a “liar,” “exploiter,” “vulture” and “witch.”
“I end up getting a surprise lawsuit of libel-slander
saying the things I said were slanderous,” Martino said
writing in the order that Martino “failed to file a response or introduce any evidence.”
Martino said she didn’t receive notice of the hearing
The judge awarded the guardian $160,000 in damages
Guardian who won libel case charged with felonies
Fifteen months later, Hudson was arrested after prosecutors say she stole more than $500,000 from another senior under her care
Hudson was indicted on additional charges involving two additional victims
The investigating agencies were the same ones Martino contacted about her concerns
As Hudson prepared for trial on the criminal charges
attorney Hayter started foreclosure proceedings against Martino
adding an additional $80,000 for attorney fees
which was deeded to a limited liability corporation comprised of Martino and her two children
“There was nothing about the house because the house was in an LLC
The LLC was not the one being sued,” Martino said
she represented herself and filed dozens of motions and multiple appeals
On January 25, Martino argued to the Florida Court of Appeals that her home should be protected under Florida’s Homestead Law.
Section 4 of the Florida Constitution says
“There shall be exempt from forced sale under process of any court
decree or execution shall be a lien thereon.”
“I have been living in this home consistently since March 2014
There’s been no proof I’ve lived anywhere else,” Martino said
Hayter argued during the hearing that the property was not in her name
the property was either held in the name of the LLC or the name of the appellant’s daughter,” Hayter said
Martino also argued the original judgment shouldn’t stand
since there was no proof her statements were untrue or harmed the reputation of the guardian
I’m entitled to equal protection under the law,” Martino said
The judge in the original libel suit signed an order allowing the sale to move forward
She said she didn’t have time to arrange for movers to remove her personal items
Hayter came to the house and immediately called the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office requesting that our news team be removed from a public sidewalk beside a county-owned road
Deputies did not respond while we were there
Employees of a trash-hauling company then cleared out the contents of Martino’s home and loaded them into a trailer
They did not tell Martino where they were taking her things
“This is really just unbelievable that this can even happen in our country.”
She filed an emergency motion to try to keep her possessions from being thrown into the dump
but no immediate action was taken by the court
Martino is staying in a hotel and has no idea where she’s going to live next
She said she’s exhausted all of her savings on litigation and doesn’t even have enough money to pay a deposit on an apartment

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded about 11:30 p.m. to a call about a body on the tracks on South Parsons Avenue south of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a spokesperson said.
Deputies arrived and found a woman, 26-year-old Mikayla Shannon Renee Redman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives determined Redman had been struck by a train.
No additional details have been released. The investigation into the incident remained active Wednesday, the spokesperson said.
