Visitors travelling the heritage line were able to see some of UK’s most popular layouts on display at the Highley Visitor Centre
The railway models came from exhibitors who travelled from across the country to display their layouts
The displays were set out amongst the full-size locomotives and carriages on display in The Engine House
including ‘Gordon’ the blue engine and 7819 ‘Hinton Manor’
Ian Redman returned to the event from Sussex with a 30ft model
Owen Jenkins said: "The basis is the lay-out is 50 years old
It was a previous member who did it and did it as a lay-out called “loose chickens”
"He sadly passed away and we were asked to clear out his shed and discovered it there
We have brought it back to life and done a sympathetic restoration because I wanted to keep the original lay-out
"I then re-named the lay-out after Roy and got it back out into the public perception
Hopefully it will go on for another 20 or 30 years."

which has made the rest of the line to Bridgnorth unpassable
Severn Trent is reminding customers of the serious impact wet wipes can have on them and their homes
Everyone is being urged to think about the effects that wet wipes can have on sewers and remember that one the 3P’s – pee
poo and (toilet) paper – should be flushed down the toilet
The reminder comes as today marks one year since the previous Government announced a ban on wet wipes containing plastics during Earth Day
The water company continues to support this proposed change to help prevent the impact wet wipes have on the sewer network
said: “We welcomed the ban when it was announced last year and would fully support it being proposed once again
“While many of our customers do understand the issues caused by wet wipes
there are still thousands of blockages each year that could be prevented if wet wipes weren’t flushed down the toilet
“We would like to see the ban implemented and brought forward into legislation to help everyone to understand the harmful effects that all wet wipes can have if they are flushed down the toilet.”
When disposed of down the toilet rather than into bin
wet wipes become a main offender in the formation of blockages and fatbergs in the sewer network
Even some products that say ‘flushable’ or ‘biodegradable’ on the packaging don’t break down like toilet paper
These blockages are entirely avoidable and can lead to sewage spilling out of manhole covers elsewhere along the network
or backing up into peoples’ homes or gardens
which can be both unpleasant and costly to fix
This is why Severn Trent always urges customers to ‘be a binner
not a blocker’ and always remember that only the 3P’s – pee
Grant added: “We work hard to keep our sewers healthy
but with customers following our advice and working with us
it will have a huge impact on the number of blockages we see.”
Severn Trent’s latest “Sewer Stories” campaign is asking everyone to ‘be a binner
by showcasing the gross consequences of flushing the wrong things down the loo
Other offenders that can cause big issues for customers are kitchen roll
When all these are congealed together with fats
which in turn can lead to flooding in homes and gardens

Two men were killed and two more wounded after a dispute surrounding a basketball game erupted into gunfire Tuesday night in Severn
after several people called the county’s 911 center about multiple people being shot
Assistant Police Chief William Lowry said at a Tuesday night news briefing
Arriving to an “extremely chaotic” and “very confusing” scene
responders ultimately located three men who were injured
of the Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division
but medics pronounced 23-year-old Derrick Purcell Ahmad McDonald
The fire department took 28-year-old Mack Samuel Galloway III
to the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center
The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.
Officials originally said the third victim they found at the scene had been shot but clarified in the news release that the 26-year-old man “was injured by a possible metal fragment resulting from the gunfire.” Authorities took him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore
describing his injuries as non life-threatening
they pulled over a vehicle near Pioneer Drive and Jacobs Road
“occupied by two males who were believed to have been involved in the shooting,” the department said in the news release
to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore with what they described as non-life-threatening injuries
which consists of officers with special mental health training
were quickly on the scene Tuesday night “trying to do some mitigation with the affected family members,” Lowry said
Detectives assigned to the department’s Western District Station and homicide unit were canvassing the community for clues Tuesday night
detectives “collected multiple items of evidentiary value at the crime scene and from the vehicle” where police found the additional gunshot victim
“Several witnesses were located and interviewed regarding the shooting.”
Investigators are still working to determine a motive
but say their investigation has revealed that “this was a targeted incident and not a random act of violence.”
commander of the department’s Western District Station
expressed sympathy for the Meade Village community
“You should be able to go out to the basketball courts and play basketball
go out to the community and walk and talk to different people,” Davis said
“The Police Department is here for you,” added McFarlane
“We have been in constant contact with our clergy
as well as our community leaders to make sure we have an impact on reducing the violence and making sure we’re here to provide as many resources as we can to the community to help them heal through times like this.”
McFarlane said the department would in the coming days “maintain a high visible presence and we will be out here to answer any questions or concerns that the community may have
Our main impact here is to make sure the community feels safe and to make sure there are no further instances of violence.”
a Democrat who represents the community where the shooting happened
said he was at the scene when police told a family that their loved one had died
“It breaks my heart to see our communities affected like this,” Smith told The Banner
“It breaks my heart that two people are deceased because of a dispute that happened on a basketball court.”
He said it was critical to support police as they investigate the deadly shooting and to “get everyone together in our community and wrap our arms around the people who are left picking up the pieces.”
“is that guns are just too easily available
and it’s sad when disputes can’t be remediated in a more peaceful manner.”
Officials encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to call police at 410-222-4700

who has decided to take his talents to the the Lynchburg Hornets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
To say Coach Koudelka has been a winner at the university located in the Virginia town with the same name and built a program pretty much from scratch is an understatement
now in his 29th season as his program's top face
has well over three hundred victories and has led Lynchburg to 10 ODAC Tournament titles and 17 appearances in the NCAA Tournament
the Hornets have made the last twelve postseasons
their hopes for another return are very much alive
Koudelka and his teams have had several deep runs in the NCAA Tournament
The highlight was for Lynchburg was its showing in the 2015 Division III Championship
The Hornets have won a double-digit number of games most years under Koudelka
With their conference triumph this past weekend over Bridgewater
he and the Hornets clinched their 21st consecutive season with a double-digit number of wins
" I chose Lynchburg for the outstanding culture and competitive environment within the lacrosse program and school
The campus is beautiful and is full of great people
and the winning mindset of the team is great
The impressive accolades of Coach Koudelka foster a positive team chemistry
creating success for the team and myself in the future
I am very excited about my commitment to the University of Lynchburg
and I am looking forward to what the future holds!"
Many congratulations to Cole Gray and his family
He will be a part of a pure winning program that has lots of past success
and for which the future is definitely bright
Could Lynchburg take that next step with a national title during his time there
While Gray will have a chance to be a part of continuing a victorious tradition under a legendary coach at the collegiate level
he has the opportunity to be one of the "pioneers" in getting the run for first-year Severn lacrosse coach Keegan Wilkinson going strong

Fears have been raised that the closure of the first Severn Bridge to lorries later this month could add hours to local journeys
is to have a weight limit imposed from Tuesday
May 27 meaning heavy goods vehicles over 7.5-tonnes
that currently make up around 10 per cent of the 32,000 vehicles that cross it every day
will need to use the second Severn crossing
the M4 Prince of Wales bridge to travel between Wales and England
But Wales’ transport minister Ken Skates has been told local people fear further gridlock on in and around the M4 and trunk roads in Monmouthshire
The bridges are operated by the UK Government’s National Highways agency but Monmouth Senedd Member Peter Fox asked in the Welsh Parliament what steps the Welsh Government is taking to reduce the impact on alternative routes
who said it is recognised the bridge closure is “essential” for strengthening works
said a “reconfiguration” of M4 junction 23
would have to be kept under review but described the Highbeech roundabout as his “main area of concern”
He said the area is “plagued by appalling congestion” and urged the Labour minister to find a date for an already promised visit to Chepstow to address traffic concerns
Mr Fox said “immediate attention” is needed to Chepstow’s Highbeech roundabout: “HGVs could
use this to access the A48 to head into England
if there are any closures on the Prince of Wales bridge
They will use it to access the A48 or even the A466 to Monmouth
Newport East Labour MS John Griffiths said he was concerned about the impact on junctions 23 and 23A of the M4 where lorries will have to “loop around” to head for the M4 bridge
Magor and Undy residents found that journeys from their villages and towns to the M4
because of the incredible congestion and the pinch point at that junction
they’re very concerned about the upcoming restrictions that we’re discussing in terms of HGVs and just what the consequences would be for them.”
Mr Skates said National Highways is organising workshops to discuss concerns which will include Monmouthshire County Council and said he and his officials will raise concerns over the Highbeech roundabout and they are investigating measures that could be put in place at junction 23A “to aid the local community”

I had the misfortune to travel east on the M4 on the Wednesday before Easter when the old bridge had closed due to high winds
The traffic was backed up almost to the Brynglas tunnels
Because the three lanes on the new bridge merged into two because of roadworks on the bridge
This was only signposted just before the lanes merged
Given the number of Matrix signs along the route surely motorists could have been warned much earlier to get into the appropriate lanes
I know there are always chancers who will try to push in at the last… Read more »
That’s English Nationalist Highways for you
Not forgetting that its two lanes after the bridge anyway (after the peel off for the SW traffic) till the steep hill then its clunkers and wagons and caravans struggling…

Baltimore is Native American land — that’s the first thing I want you to know
Many locals and outsiders alike would consider that a strange perspective
since Baltimore is usually perceived in a monochrome scale of Black and white
but its story has always been more complicated
much of Baltimore City may not legally belong to its settlers
depending on your interpretation of a 1652 treaty’s ambiguous boundaries
A rare public commemoration of this history in Baltimore City
The 1652 Maryland–Susquehannock treaty was likely modeled on the 1646 Anglo–Powhatan Treaty
and it was only the second treaty ever between an Anglo-colonial government and an Indigenous nation; it set precedents for many future treaties
it differed from those other agreements in a notable way: this was a treaty of equal relations
It did not put the Susquehannock people under any colonial authority
Its text conveys the distinct impression that the Marylanders were terrified of them
this was a treaty of land cession as well as a peace treaty
The Susquehannock representatives ceded a large stretch of land on Maryland’s western shore (west of the Chesapeake Bay) and eastern shore (east of the Chesapeake
on the Delmarva Peninsula) in exchange for alliance and continual peace between the two signatory parties
There was more to the treaty than land cession
One paragraph forbade surprise attacks by either signatory party upon the other
Another paragraph stated that “upon any occasion of buisness to the English
or any Messadge and the like,” the Susquehannock people must come in a delegation fewer than “Eight or ten” in number
and must “bring with them the token given them by the English for that purpose
Colonial troops then laid siege to the fort
The Susquehannock people who survived the siege escaped and fled Maryland
When Baltimore Town began to be settled in the 1730s
the Susquehannock people were not in a position to contest the boundaries of the 1652 land cession
I have been extraordinarily lucky to meet and get to know some of the brilliant and kind Native American tribal members who go about their lives in this city
What might happen if we held Maryland (or the city of Baltimore) to its treaty obligations to tribal nations in a similar way
I would like to receive emails from CONTINGENT
and that historians should be paid for their work

Commission launched in 2022 says lagoon project
should be backed by UK and Welsh governments
Urgent action is needed to harness the UK’s potential for tidal range energy in the Severn estuary but smaller lagoon models should be pursued over a larger dam-like barrage
The Severn Estuary Commission said that harnessing the energy of the tides in the estuary could deliver predictable
renewable electricity that would work independent of weather conditions
But it stopped short of recommending a full dam-like barrage across the estuary – an idea that has been floated for many years
who recently received the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in recognition of his role in pioneering development the modern wind energy industry
said: “This last year has been an eye-opening experience for all of us on the commission
understanding the huge potential of this source of renewable energy and also the international environmental importance of the estuary
what sets this commission aside from previous studies is the emphasis that it has placed on the environment
“Electricity demand will increase with the widespread uptake of electric vehicles
We urgently need to get serious about how we can make use of our natural resources to meet this demand whilst also tackling our carbon emissions
“Given the likely timelines for developing a project of this scale
we need to act now to ensure we can deliver the energy when it is needed and at the same time safeguard the environment.”
The commission is made up of nationally and internationally recognised engineers
and was launched by the Western Gateway “powerhouse”
business and public sector leaders and academics covering an area stretching from Swansea to Swindon and straddling the Severn
It was launched in 2022 as the Russian invasion of Ukraine forced the issue of energy security back on the agenda and for the past year has been engaging with hundreds of individuals and organisations to explore if it is now possible to harness the power of the UK’s largest tidal range after decades of proposals
The Severn estuary holds the largest share of the UK’s tidal range energy potential
and could contribute up to 7% of the UK’s electricity needs
Publishing its final recommendations on Wednesday
legislative barriers and the impacts on ports and other commercial activities
at this stage the development of a large barrage in the Severn estuary should not be pursued
it said a lagoon project – which functions similarly to a barrage but over a smaller body of water – offered a positive alternative and should be backed by the UK and Welsh governments
The UK’s National Energy System Operator already predicts that tidal energy will need to play a part in any future energy system
The Severn estuary has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and could provide the vast majority of the UK’s total tidal energy
it also remains of international environmental importance
The recommendations have already received the backing of the Welsh government
said: “We need urgent action to make the most of this opportunity
A lagoon project would not only deliver predictable renewable energy
it could also add up to £12bn GVA (gross value added) to the UK economy and 220,000 job years in the construction phase.”

Memorials and a peace rally this weekend will celebrate the lives of those lost and comfort a mourning community after a deadly shooting earlier this week in Severn
According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department
a dispute at the basketball court in the 8100 block of Meade Village Road escalated into an exchange of gunfire
The police continue to investigate while the community mourns a tragedy that took place at what some say is typically a “neutral spot.”

said a men’s basketball league called Tunnel Vision competes at the Meade Village Road basketball court in the summer
“It [the basketball court] was a pillar staple of the communities coming together at that location. So, to have the guys who got shot get shot at the basketball court was a significant blow to the community,” Curtis said.
Curtis said he was devastated to learn what took place at the court earlier this week.
“We were praying that there would be no violence for 2025, and then we got this phone call and text message the other night,” Curtis said. “My heart sank. Honestly, I just got on my knees, prayed, I cried a little bit and just said, ‘OK, God, give me the strength to be a comfort to those that are really hurting and mourning. How can we galvanize the community and begin the healing process?’ ”
Man Up, a violence prevention and interruption program Curtis works with, is leading a peace rally on Saturday at 11 a.m. starting and ending at the Meade Village basketball court. The group is planning to walk around the neighborhood reciting chants and expects elected officials and community members to join them.
In addition to the peace rally, victims’ family members are hosting a balloon release Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the basketball court
They are requesting participants to bring silver and black balloons

Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) is one of the most persistent and complex challenges for wastewater network operators and is often the root cause of storm overflow spills
addressing I&I in a particular catchment was a potential solution to reduce the storage volume required to meet environmental targets and regulatory requirements
I&I is a moving problem where traditional methods are reliant on manual data analysis and manual inspections
adopted a new approach to help Seven Trent Water address I&I in Gloucester
using AI and machine learning to make data driven decisions
We conducted a 16-week programme that focused on utilising existing data
where InfoTiles uncovered meaningful patterns and trends within numerous datasets while Arup acted as the critical link between data and action
The Arup InfoTiles partnership brings together Arup’s engineering insights and InfoTiles’ AI-driven analytics
coupled with Severn Trent’s operational expertise
creating a synergy that unlocks the full potential of existing asset data.
the Arup InfoTiles partnership provided clear
data evidenced insights to inform the future steps to address I&I in the catchment
The 16-week programme focused on utilising existing data
firstly focusing on cleaning the wastewater network GIS data before quantifying inflow and infiltration to combat I&I in Gloucester
the team could begin the journey towards a more intelligent and resilient wastewater network
Poor data quality in the underlying data can be a key difficulty in I&I management
often resulting in manual corrections to understand the existing network connectivity
the pioneering use of PipeFusion (a machine learning tool that identifies disconnected or mislabelled assets in wastewater networks) demonstrated how ML can generate efficiencies to reduce the number of manual corrections required
The output from the PipeFusion analysis created a GIS network that could be utilised for AI analytics
SewerIntelligence (an AI-powered analytics platform that helps quantify and visualise inflow and infiltration) has proven that even with imperfect data
AI-driven insights can unlock tangible insights
The quantification of I&I enables Severn Trent to highlight high-risk areas and prioritise future interventions where they would have greatest impact to create the maximum return on investment
The user interface can instantly highlight areas where interventions may have a great or lesser significant impact
The surplus treatment cost of I&I allows for a cost-benefit of investing in this catchment to reduce I&I analysis to be undertaken
The success of this initiative in Gloucester has demonstrated the potential for scaling AI and ML-driven solutions across Severn Trent’s entire network
this approach could enable STW to monitor the impact of interventions as they happen and analyse long-term catchment trends
This would not only strengthen future business cases but also demonstrate return on investment through the data itself
data-driven decision-making and demonstrating their innovation principles of curiosity
Severn Trent is not only addressing immediate infrastructure challenges but also laying the foundation for a more resilient
As this AI-powered approach expands across the UK
it promises to revolutionise how utilities manage and mitigate the impact of inflow and infiltration—ensuring a more resilient future for water management
Cleaned Severn Trent Water’s (STW) existing Geographic Information System (GIS) data to enable machine learning and AI algorithms to be run effectively
Utilised AI models to quantify Inflow & Infiltration by volume
Enabled data driven insights to understand where future interventions could create maximum return on investment

Faced with a dearth of data on the impact of local mega farms
volunteers have shown sewage pollution has soared
they started appearing on fish being caught in the River Severn in early summer
For anglers who spend many hours on the banks of the Severn around Shrewsbury
the blistering skin was yet another warning that the river

Photograph: HandoutPhil O’Callaghan, an angler, noticed the blisters on the first day of the season as he fished the Severn at Bicton Heath, north-west of Shrewsbury, this summer. “I have seen these sores in person and they look really nasty.
I am just someone who has spent my life on the river
I have seen it change for the worse; the river doesn’t clear any more
and at the near margins the bottom is covered in a horrible
These sores are just the latest thing we are seeing
and they are another cause for serious concern.”
swimmers and river lovers who are working together in an attempt to stop the decline of the Severn
They have seen the devastating decline of the neighbouring Wye and they are trying to stop the same fate happening to the Severn as it
is subjected to excessive nutrient pollution from intensive poultry farming and record levels of raw sewage discharges from Severn Trent facilities
O’Callaghan has joined 68 other anglers along the river who dedicate hundreds of hours to monitoring the water
They have taken more than 970 samples from 70 sites to record phosphate
which they send to Bristol University for analysis
Images of the sores on fish have been sent to the Environment Agency
Results of the Angling Trust’s 2024 water-quality monitoring report on the Severn have been shared with the Guardian
said: “The state of water in the catchment has not improved
“My most recent phosphate sample in Worcester was one of the highest I have recorded
I can see the algae blooms in the river and the bed of the river is still covered in the horrible brown gunge
The biodiversity of all the waterways is being totally compromised and we need to make sure that the health of the rivers and streams in the Severn catchment is improved for future generations.”
Thirty-one areas, or almost 60%, had a mean average for nitrate exceeding 5ppm (parts per million) – considered the acceptable upper limit – an increase from 35% in 2022-23.

where the excessive plant and algal growth creates high levels of bacteria which reduces oxygen levels and kills plants and wildlife
Sewage pollution and agricultural runoff are both causes
their impacts varying from urban to rural areas
there were 53,072 discharges of raw sewage into the river
it is agricultural runoff from intensive farming that is considered to make up 70% of the excess phosphate going into the river
Alison Caffyn, who lives in Shropshire
is a member of the volunteer army attempting to protect the Severn
She has become an expert in intensive poultry units (IPUs) after discovering a dearth of data on the impact of mega farms in the Severn valley
Free weekly newsletterThe planet's most important stories
Get all the week's environment news - the good
intensive poultry units were cropping up all over Herefordshire and Shropshire and I realised there was nothing known about the issue and indeed very little research had been done
about the wider impacts of intensive livestock units,” she said
Caffyn spent years researching the units for a PhD
which saw her trawling back through Shropshire council planning records and then doing the same to track the scale of IPUs in Herefordshire
cross-referencing with satellite imagery and Environment Agency permit data
When she turned to examine documents held by Powys council – to create a dataset for the main three counties in the Severn and Wye valleys – she discovered other researchers were doing similar work
Dr Christine Hugh-Jones and Margaret Tregear
both members of the council for the protection of rural Wales
had also been head down in planning records going back several years
When the three women combined their research
they created an unprecedented and comprehensive dataset on the number of chickens being housed in industrial-style units in the three counties across the Severn and Wye valleys
reveals more than 51m chickens are housed at any one time in intensive poultry units in Powys
Caffyn is using her research to bring a judicial review against Shropshire council’s decision to grant planning permission to another intensive poultry unit
housing 230,000 birds on nine hectares of land at Felton Butler
The new intensive unit is 400 metres from an existing IPU
which appears to be in breach of Defra biosecurity regulations that there should be a 3km buffer zone between high-density poultry units
Shropshire council approved the planning permission after the applicants promised they would transfer the manure to a third-party anaerobic digestion unit. But Caffyn says the processing of manure at an off-site anaerobic digestion unit will not cut nitrate and phosphate groundwater pollution. She points to research which says the digestate still contains all the nitrogen
phosphorus and potassium which was in the manure
and will have a negative impact when it is spread on farmland
We simply cannot allow the creation of more of these giant clusters of polluting poultry units or
the River Severn will be suffering the same pollution load as the neighbouring Wye,” she said
Severn Trent said it had started a £450m programme to cut spills from storm overflows into the river
head of river health enhancement at Severn Trent
said: “Since kicking off only a few months ago
our teams have been making some radical improvements that we’re already seeing benefits from
installing valves and making network enhancements is all helping us make progress to reduce spills and improve river health
which is exactly what we and our customers want.”
It happened around 6:15pm in the 8200 block of Tomlinson Court
Anne Arundel County Police said the teen is in critical condition
sustained a minor graze wound from a fired projectile
She's already been released from the hospital
Detectives believe the shooting started as an argument between several people in the neighborhood
There are no suspects in custody at this time
