filed against the 54-year-old man accused of killing his ex-fiancé and new court documents show he was wanted for violating a protection order shortly after bonding out of jail Prosecutors in Seward County charged Casey Kindt with first-degree murder The murder charge is a class 1A felony and does not carry the death penalty Seward Police officers were called to an apartment near North Second and Lincoln streets on Saturday just before midnight and officers found a door to the home had been forcibly opened The door’s trim and striking plate were found scattered on the ground An officer called out into the home to have anyone inside identify themselves officers were searching for Kindt earlier in the day for violating a protection order filed by 36-year-old Jamie Hagen Kindt was previously being held in jail for a prior bond and protection order violation The affidavit shows he violated the protection order again a short time after he bonded out of jail on Friday but the details of the violation are unclear and officers said he’d suffered severe injuries to his face and a handgun was removed from his waistband Officers then searched the home and discovered Hagen on the floor of a bedroom She had suffered at least four gunshot wounds one to the forehead and three to the chest Emergency crews declared Hagen dead at the scene The Nebraska State Patrol said the incident appeared to be a murder-suicide attempt as Kindt was found at the scene suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound He was flown to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha for life-threatening injuries but a newly filed affidavit shows he is expected to survive A neurologist later told authorities that a bullet traveled under Kindt’s chin through his mouth and fragmented as it hit his skull A portion of the fragment exited Kindt’s head while the other lodged itself inside the back of his brain During the early investigation officers discovered Hagen’s 15-year-old daughter behind a locked door in the home a short time after Kindt was taken into custody and police said she locked her door once she heard gunfire Police then discovered nearby surveillance video showing Kindt forcefully entering the home roughly four minutes before police arrived at the scene A search warrant was filed and executed the next day and authorities discovered five spent casings in the home along with a 9mm handgun in Hagen’s bedroom A search of his clothing showed he’d been carrying two Sig Sauer magazines with a total of 20 rounds of live ammunition Court records show that the protection order prohibited Kindt from possessing a firearm An arrest warrant was filed for Kindt on Thursday and the Seward County Jail was given authority to take him into custody as he recovers in Omaha authorities said his injuries remain severe it’s unclear if Kindt will have the wherewithal to be tried A future court date has yet to be set by the court A candlelight vigil for Jamie Hagen has been planned for Sunday (KOLN) — The Nebraska Judicial Branch is providing clarification on what exactly happened inside a Seward County courtroom just days before 36-year-old Jamie Hagen was allegedly slain by her ex-fiancé A representative with the state’s judicial branch contacted 10/11 News Thursday morning offering an interview with a former judge on how bonds work in Nebraska They later provided an audio recording of the hearing for 54-year-old Casey Kindt on Feb the same hearing where a prosecutor moved to have his bond revoked Kindt had been accused of beating 36-year-old Jamie Hagen at her Seward home in December before violating a condition of his bond and a protection order by contacting her Court records show Kindt tried coercing Hagen into dropping the charges against him leading him to be charged with witness tampering He’d previously bonded out of jail for the domestic assault charge but was taken back into custody in January and Seward County Attorney Wendy Elston moved to have Kindt’s bond revoked “He was to have no contact with the victim in this case and he also had an active protection order It’s the state’s position that he violated both,” Elston told the court “It’s gravely concerning that the defendant was not only ordered as part of a condition of his bond not to have contact with the victim but there was an active protection order.” told the judge it was his opinion that the conditions of bond had not been violated — saying Kindt spoke with Hagen through another person I can guarantee you in open court that I told your client not to have any contact of any kind Morris then expressed that Kindt is a disabled combat veteran and was undergoing care with the VA in relation to his charges The attorney told the court that his client had maintained a largely clean criminal record and requested Judge Petersen not to revoke Kindt’s bond He has posted $6,000 at this point,” Morris said I believe that he could post two to three-thousand additional total Judge Petersen questioned how such a bond would keep Kindt from reoffending while encouraging him to return to court “The purpose of the bond is not only to ensure his appearance back before the court She expressed frustration that Kindt directly violated her orders from a previous hearing and agreed that the bond shouldn’t be left alone Judge Petersen revoked the previous bond of $50,000 and issued a new bond worth $75,000 in the domestic assault case and applied the money Kindt had already spent That meant Kindt had to pay an additional $2,500 to be released from jail Judge Petersen directly addressed Kindt in a stern tone I am going to make this abundantly clear again,” she said “You are to have zero contact with the victim in this matter The bond was modified on Feb. 5, and Kindt posted the remainder of it two days later on Friday. Late Saturday evening, police said they found him inside Hagen’s home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Hagen was found dead inside with gunshot wounds to her forehead and chest Hagen’s family stopped in Seward on Monday to begin funeral preparations expressed frustration in the judicial system and Kindt’s bond amount Other Seward community members expressed their frustration about the bond online many of them pointing fingers at Judge Petersen a representative with the Nebraska Judicial Branch offered an interview with a former county judge to learn more about how bonds are set in Nebraska Retired Nebraska county judge Curtis Maschman told 10/11 News that setting anyone’s bond is a balancing act — and it’s rarely a judge’s objective to keep a suspect in jail indefinitely “The statutes that direct bonds say that courts should use the least restrictive method of bond terms or bond conditions,” Maschman said that would still assure that the defendant will appear as ordered and not create a risk of harm to the public The Nebraska State Constitution specifies that the vast majority of criminal offenses must come with the option of bail aside from treason Maschman said the matter of bond comes down to each judge’s own discretion “You can remove all risk if everybody just has a high bond – that’s probably true — but you’d be running afoul of the guidelines of what your job is," Maschman said Kindt is expected to survive his injuries after he was flown to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha Charges have yet to be filed in the case as he recovers and it’s unclear if he will be fit to stand them A candlelight vigil for Jamie Hagen has been planned for Sunday afternoon outside the Seward County Courthouse To help cover funeral expenses and care for Hagen’s daughters the family set up the Jamie Ann Hagen Memorial Fund at Union Bank & Trust in Seward The family said anyone interested in donating can contact a bank representative at 402-643-2954 A friend of Jamie’s also set up a GoFundMe to help support her daughters Match Recap: Men's Tennis | 2/8/2025 9:45:00 PM | Athletic Communications There are currently no upcoming/recent events Thanks for visiting The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here Mar 7, 2025 | Construction, Government, News, Tourism, Transportation The second time was the charm.
