“Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965
we have seen state officials advance hundreds of new measures to make it harder for Americans to vote,” said Rep
“As we prepare to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in my hometown of Selma
it is clear; the fight for voting rights is just as urgent today as it was decades ago
I’m proud to be reintroducing the John R
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act with the support of every House Democrat
Our bill would give us the tools necessary to address modern-day voter suppression and ensure every American has equal access to the ballot box.”
the experiment in self-government relates directly to the ability of all Americans to have the unfettered right to vote," said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries
"But voting rights are under attack across America
which is why the John Robert Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is so critical
House Democrats are thankful for the leadership of Rep
Terri Sewell in reintroducing this important legislation that will put an end to the era of voter suppression in America once and for all."
Extremists are cutting people’s health care
Our most powerful tool to fight back is our vote
which is exactly why those extremists are trying to strip it away,” said House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark
“If we want to preserve government by the people and defend all that Congressman Lewis fought for
House Democrats demand a vote on the John R
and we call on Congressional Republicans to join us.”
Sewell and my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of John Lewis marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and honor his memory with legislation righting a great wrong,” said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar
the politicians on the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act
allowing states across the country to make it harder for people to vote
House Democrats want our elections to be more fair and more accessible so that everyone has the chance to make their voice heard
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
“The right to vote is a sacred cornerstone of our democracy
My dear friend John Lewis recognized this and dedicated his life to ensuring people have free and unfettered access to the ballot box
I’m proud to continue the fight and honor his memory by joining Rep
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” said Rep
“We have a moral obligation to make this country’s greatness accessible and affordable for all Americans; fundamental to that mission is including all Americans in our great democracy
I urge our Republican colleagues to reconsider their partisan opposition to protecting the franchise
Right now — we need to rally the American people to do the things that are necessary to maintain this democracy."
“I commend Congresswoman Sewell for her years of leadership on this critical piece of legislation,” said Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joseph Morelle
“60 years after the late Congressman John Lewis marched from Selma to Montgomery
and equal access to the ballot box is not over.”
“At a time of escalating racism and democratic backsliding
America must summon the moral compass of Congressman John Lewis
a Civil Rights Movement hero and steadfast public servant whom I was honored to call a friend,” said House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin
“Ahead of the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday
where John was beaten within inches of his life while marching for voting rights
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the right to vote and strengthen our democracy
Sewell for her leadership and partnership on this legislation and for championing voting rights and John Lewis’ legacy.”
we have seen a wave of voter suppression laws being introduced in jurisdictions around the country
including many with histories of racial voting discrimination,” said Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Yvette D
“I thank my esteemed colleague Representative Terri Sewell for her leadership in reintroducing the John R
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the 119th Congress
At a time when our democracy is under constant threat
we must do all we can to protect our sacred right to vote
Protecting Americans’ access to the ballot box should not be a partisan issue
The CBC is calling on Republicans to work with Democrats to pass the John R
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore and modernize the protections of the VRAA to prevent states from erecting new barriers to the ballot box.”
“John Lewis put us in a position to take the next step on equal voting rights for all
there are forces that not only want to stop us from taking that step
they want to erase John’s legacy,” said Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat
“There is no more appropriate way to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday than the reintroduction of the John
“As we approach the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday on March 7
we remember the struggle and sacrifice of civil rights activists who put their lives at risk
to ensure every American has the right to vote,” said Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chairwoman Grace Meng
“While we have made significant progress
Americans' sacred right to vote is under attack by anti-democracy extremists
and it is our duty to protect our democracy from those who seek to undermine it
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure our country's system of governance
the late Congressman John Lewis and hundreds of Foot Soldiers were viciously attacked by police while peacefully demonstrating in support of the equal right of all Americans to vote
The brutality of Bloody Sunday galvanized the Civil Rights Movement and led to the passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA)
For decades, the VRA prevented states with a history of voter discrimination from erecting new barriers to the ballot box, until it was gutted by the Supreme Court in the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision. Without its guardrails, state officials have enacted at least 94 restrictive voting laws
many in states with a history of racial voting discrimination
Subsequent Supreme Court decisions have further weakened the VRA
making it more difficult to challenge voter discrimination in court
Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore and modernize the protections of the VRA
It would establish a modern-day framework to determine which states and localities have a recent history of voter discrimination and require those jurisdictions to pre-clear new voting laws with the Department of Justice

I hope we learn more soon about why Columbia Journalism Review executive editor Sewell Chan was abruptly fired on Friday
he has been portrayed as the boss from hell
while Chan himself has claimed he was the victim of a toxic workplace culture
I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about either Chan or Columbia Journalism School dean Jelani Cobb
and social-media posts suggesting that Chan was done in by the mishegas into which Columbia has descended can’t be right
I’m sharing this New York Times story because it does a good job of laying out what we know
There was no indication in Chan’s email that there was anything amiss at the CJR

The bill—which is based on the lie of non-citizens voting in federal elections—would create burdensome new barriers to voting for the 69 million married women who have changed their last names
the 146 million Americans without passports
and Americans with military and tribal IDs
Watch it on YouTube here
I rise to join my CBC colleagues in getting into some Good Trouble as we voice our very strong opposition to the Republicans’ voter suppression bill
As a daughter of Selma and the Representative of Alabama's Civil Rights District
the fight for voting rights is very personal to me
where John Lewis and hundreds of Foot Soldiers were bludgeoned on the Edmund Pettus Bridge for the right
The legislation before us makes a mockery of that legacy
President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have pushed the Big Lie of a stolen election
They have tried to convince the American people of the lie that non-citizens are a threat to our elections
and now they're using that lie as an excuse to pass a new law
that would make it harder for millions of Americans to cast their ballots
It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections
non-citizens would face up to five years in prison for attempting to vote in federal elections and even risk being deported
this legislation would purge thousands of eligible voters from the rolls
It would create significant barriers for the 69 million women who currently got married and changed their last names
so their birth certificates do not match their marriage certificates
and thus it would be harder for these women
and the 140 million Americans that do not have a passport
and those with military IDs and tribal IDs
none of which would be able to prove their birth citizenship
These are not included in the bill as proper forms of ID that will allow someone to show their citizenship
Americans should see this bill for what it is—a cynical attempt to flame the fire of false voter fraud by the same extremists who brought us the January 6th insurrection
Their objective of suppressing the vote was made even more clear last week
when President Trump signed an executive order to erode voting rights and gave Elon Musk an unelected
person the right to access Americans’ personal voter information.
we as elected officials in this House should be fighting to protect and expand access to the ballot box
we in the Congressional Black Caucus have remained committed
committed to ensuring and defending the sacred right to vote
We in the Congressional Black Caucus see voting rights as our North Star
we will not stop fighting as long as President Trump and Elon Musk and House Republicans are trying to take away our sacred right to vote.
I urge all my colleagues to not only vote NO on the SAVE Act
It was John Lewis who said that ours is not the struggle of one day
and as long as the Congressional Black Caucus 63 members strong in this Congress
we will stand up and protect the rights of every American to vote and we will stop efforts like the SAVE act
The SAVE act is not there to save election integrity
The SAVE act is all about saving Republican seats and Republican elected officials.
We will be voting NO on that bill when it comes to the Floor
and we urge our other colleagues to do the same
And I want to commend the Gentlewoman from Virginia for leading this special order.
It's now time for us to get off their shoulders and to do our own work
and our own work we will do in defeating the SAVE Act and for standing up for the legacy of John Lewis and those Foot Soldiers who marched on a bridge in my hometown for the equal right of every American to vote
The CBC will be standing up for voting rights

Republican Lorenzo Sewell, a Detroit pastor who led a prayer at President Donald Trump's inauguration
confirmed Friday that he's considering running for the U.S
“I am keeping all options open," Sewell told The Detroit News when asked about a potential U.S
Sewell said he planned to pray about the possibility of running for the Senate but said he was already serving as an advocate for Michigan in Washington
Trump held a campaign stop at Sewell's 180 Church in Detroit in June
which has a congregation of about 300 people
would open its doors to any political leader who wanted to hear about the "pains and injustices in the communities that we serve."
In 2026, Michigan voters will elect a new U.S. senator after Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, decided not to run for re-election
On the Democratic side, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak, has already launched a bid for the seat
And many Democrats expect former candidate for governor Abdul El-Sayed of Ann Arbor and current U.S
Haley Stevens of Birmingham to join the primary race
confirmed Friday that he’s also exploring a run for the U.S
Senate seat and has been meeting with stakeholders in both Washington and Michigan
“A lot of people’s futures are uncertain right now
and we need to be at the forefront of protecting people’s future,” Tate told The Detroit News
getting input from a variety of people in D.C
and people here in Michigan across the state about what they want to see in their next U.S
As for Republicans, former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of White Lake Township is expected to announce his bid for the U.S. Senate next week. In 2024, Rogers was the Republican nominee for the Senate and endorsed by Trump, but he lost a close contest to Democrat Elissa Slotkin of Holly, 48.3%-48.6%
Rogers has a "campaign kickoff" event scheduled for 6:30 p.m
according to an invitation reviewed by The Detroit News
The document required people to RSVP before being notified of the location
Jonathan Lindsey of Coldwater and former gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon of Norton Shores
have also been weighing whether to seek their party's Senate nomination
Sewell said he's already been working on behalf of the people of Michigan
where he's been pushing for what he described as "fair elections" and community investments
Sewell posted a photo on Facebook with Peter Navarro
"He is very interested in helping us regarding election fraud," Sewell wrote on Facebook of Navarro
During his prayer at Trump's inauguration on Jan
Sewell quoted at length from Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech
Sewell prayed that God would use the country's president and prayed that Americans can "live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin
but by the content of our character" ― a well-known line from King's dream speech
After Sewell finished his prayer in the Capitol rotunda
Trump briefly embraced the pastor and told him: "'You're special

The bill would designate December 1st as a federal holiday commemorating the historic arrest of Rosa Parks in Montgomery
February 4th marked Rosa Parks’ 112th birthday
Watch it on YouTube here
I proudly represent Alabama's 7th Congressional District
which includes the historic cities of Birmingham
I want to thank my colleagues for joining me today
We are here to pay tribute to a civil rights icon and an American heroine from my home state of Alabama
as she celebrates what would have been her 112th birthday
Rosa Parks’ legacy is one of remarkable bravery and fortitude
By simply refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus
she stood up for the values that this nation holds dear
distinguished courage set the stage for the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott and galvanized a movement that changed the very fabric of this nation
That’s why I am so excited to have re-introduced legislation in the House to designate December 1st as a federal holiday commemorating her historic arrest in Montgomery
Rosa Parks Day will serve as a powerful reminder of the fight for justice that took place in Montgomery
it will become the first federal holiday to honor a woman
This bill is especially important given the attacks by the Trump Administration on our history
we know that efforts are afoot to erase our history and roll back the progress that so many of our ancestors fought and died for
Purges of federal employees who work to make our government more inclusive
Agency websites wiped of information promoting equity and fairness
the Trump Administration even banned the Defense Intelligence Agency from observing Black History Month and Martin Luther King Day
we learned that the history of the Tuskegee Airmen from my home state of Alabama had been removed from the Air Force training curriculum before being restored after public backlash
Americans should see these attacks for what they really are—an attempt to whitewash our history and devalue the contributions of African Americans
Their attack is an attack on all of us and the values that make this nation great
for us to tell our story and to recognize the contributions of amazing leaders like Rosa Parks
Her legacy is a part of American history and should be celebrated as the important part of American history
By honoring her with a new federal holiday
we can ensure that what happened in Montgomery and Selma and Birmingham is never ever erased or forgotten
no matter how hard some extremists may try
Rosa Parks Day will serve as a reminder of the power of ordinary Americans to achieve extraordinary social change
Americans—young and old—can draw inspiration from her legacy in the continued struggle for equality and justice
I get to stand here as Alabama’s first Black Congresswoman because amazing freedom fighters like Rosa Parks were unafraid to challenge the status quo and to make this nation live up to its highest ideals of equality and justice for all
As women of the Congressional Black Caucus
and I can think of no one more befitting to honor with a new federal holiday
I want to thank my colleagues for their support
We look forward to harnessing this momentum to get it across the finish line
and it is our hope that we can do so in a bipartisan way
I will now yield to my friend and colleague from Ohio
the former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus
and the leader in the state of Ohio when she was majority leader in the state legislature to make Rosa Parks Day a state holiday in the state of Ohio

Proposed federal budget cuts under the administration of President Trump may threaten programs that could directly impact families across rural West Alabama
Congresswoman Terri Sewell addressed the issue during her "Congress in your Community" tour
"You know the common theme throughout today has been that very vital services that vulnerable communities right here in Tuscaloosa rely on
are being cut by this administration and we simply cannot sit back and do nothing," said Sewell
Some of the programs named included head start
Congresswoman Sewell stated at the direction of President Trump; the House Republicans released their 2025 budget proposal which stands to cut four trillion dollars to programs that Americans rely on
a healthcare provider that serves roughly 60 thousand patients in Alabama
could be at the top of that list of those impacted
The facility provides services for many low-income families in need

"It is the only federal qualified health center in West Alabama
but Hale County and Pickens County and Sumter County," said Sewell
Sewell said 90 percent of Maude Whatley's funding is at risk under the proposed cuts
"And when that broad freeze memo went out
they were unable to access their portal for two days
That's simply unacceptable when you have to make payroll at the end of every week," said Sewell

After retiring from The Associated Press three and a half years ago
I soon realized that leaving the fast-paced global news organization and journalism
was like an addict trying to quit cold turkey
I soon was dabbling with some op-ed offerings to The Enquirer and when political columnist Jason Williams jumped over to sports the next year to succeed retiring columnist Paul Daugherty
Executive Editor Beryl Love asked if I’d like to contribute a regular Opinion column
The AP prides itself on delivering news that’s not only fast and accurate
so expressing opinions in a column was a challenging change
but supporting them compellingly and persuasively isn’t simple
I’ve had a good coach in Opinion Editor Kevin Aldridge
a veteran opinion writer who’s also a long-time pal and someone I supervised during a stint as The Enquirer’s suburban editor a couple decades ago
Career advice: always try to treat the young up-and-coming employees well
because you might wind up working for them someday (this was the second time that happened to me)
the thinking for oneself,” said no less an eminent columnist than the late Harper’s magazine editor Lewis H
and an opinion I always found hard to come by.”
as the late Red Smith of The New York Times replied when asked if writing columns was hard: “Why
Suffice it to say I’ve developed a new appreciation for George Will
who recently marked his 50th anniversary of writing one of the nation’s most-read columns
The column as practiced here has been free-ranging
covering such hot topics as raising awareness of sexual assault on college campuses
the rifts in a local school district over diversity and Critical Race Theory
enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution
and the appearance of a Confederate flag flapping along a busy roadway in suburban Harrison
Some focused on personalities in the news: Butler County’s outspoken Sheriff Richard Jones’ long-standing call for action against illegal immigration; Mayor Aftab Pureval’s ambitious vision for Cincinnati’s future; Southern Ohio newspaper editor-publisher Gary Abernathy’s role as a national “Voice from Trump Country;” Kentucky Gov
Andy Beshear’s use of his former governor father for advice; and Jewish U.S
Greg Landsman’s reaction to gory videos of the Hamas militants’ surprise attack on Israel
I got to know fellow Middletown native J.D
by the way) through interviews producing columns that tracked his rise from U.S
Senate candidate in a crowded GOP field to winning the nomination
then his first months in office and finally
his ascension to become Donald Trump’s vice president-to-be
That’s a lot of material in a short period
but there’s nothing like a near-death experience to change your perspective
First warning sign came at an August Reds game
I was in a hurry for the TJ Friedl bobblehead giveaway
Simply going up steps left me badly out of breath
Things started unfolding quickly after that and within a couple weeks
I was being rushed into an operating room at Christ Hospital to replace a failing aortic valve
My surgeon said afterward: “We got you just in time.” A nurse commented: “He gave you a very nice cut.” Yes
I have a very straight scar down the middle of my chest as a daily reminder of the fragility of life
That probably would have been a logical time to re-retire
but a politics columnist needs to stay on the job when one of the most consequential elections in our lifetimes is heading into the stretch run
It was a full Election Day with morning interviews of voters at the polls
following the vote counts through the evening
and filing a column to Kevin in the wee hours after Republican Bernie Moreno had ridden Trump’s coattails to unseat Democratic Sen
Sherrod Brown (who I first interviewed nearly 50 years ago when I was a reporter for The Post of Ohio University and Brown was the youngest state legislator)
After three months of cardiac rehabilitation exercise classes and weekly finger pricks for blood checks
But I had already decided that November would be my last working election night
Frank Baum wrote in “The Marvelous Land of Oz,” “Everything has to come to an end
the book was not about Trump’s pick to run the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).”
It’s time to focus more on health and family in a life without regular deadlines
A recent survey from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicated that about two-thirds of American adults have felt the need to cut back on media consumption about politics and government because of overload leading up to the last election
such as when you see headlines about Trump wanting to acquire Greenland
While adding Canada would dramatically improve our hockey and comedy resources
And then there was the holiday period brouhaha when Trump’s new Hand of the King
pledged in defending H-1B foreign worker hiring in specialty occupations “to go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.” Steve Bannon
warned Musk not to “start lecturing people about the way things are going to be
Musk’s co-leader of the made-up Department of Government Efficiency
joined in by commenting that a problem in America is that people who aren’t foreign-born or first-generation like him celebrate “the prom queen over the math olympiad champ
The sources he cited included the TV series “Boy Meets World,” and “Saved by the Bell.”
I’m more familiar with Bette Davis than Zack and Cory or other ‘90s teen sitcom characters
so to paraphrase her: “Fasten your seat belts
With plenty of material for political columnists
Beryl has encouraged me to contribute a guest column from time to time
and that journalism craving could kick in again at some point
and know that I always appreciated hearing constructive feedback
