BRAINERD — The “Shady Hollow” series is fun — plain and simple
The animal puns and silly names are utterly delightful
and I’m obviously partial to the main character being a newspaper reporter
The quirky characters are as colorful as their names — like Lenore the Raven
town gossip Gladys Honeysuckle the hummingbird and Reginald von Beaverpelt
Thoughts of the movie “Zootopia” and the classic novel “The Wind in the Willows” come to mind
The “Shady Hollow” series includes four full-length novels and two short stories so far
“Summers End,” is due to hit shelves July 9
Journalistic ethics might have taken a bit of a hit in “Shady Hollow,” with foxy reporter Vera Vixen overstepping police procedure in her quest to get the best story and please cutthroat
But perhaps the options for journalism schools are limited when you have paws and fur
When Gladys Honeysuckle discovers the body of curmudgeonly neighborhood toad Otto Sumpf on her way to work one day
but surely no one’s dislike was cause enough for murder
who takes it upon herself to solve the crime before Deputy Orville Braun can do so
uncovering lots of secrets and deciphering which ones might be relevant to the case
and they’re pushed even further when the murderer strikes again
Add in threatening messages delivered to Vera’s home
and there doesn’t seem to be a calm creature in sight
The fox has got to solve the mystery before it’s too late
An 11-year-old mystery plagues the Hollow after a grisly discovery at the local orchard
so she works diligently to clear her friend’s name
the memory of last summer’s ordeal still fresh in everyone’s minds
Vera’s best friend Lenore is still running her rook-shaped bookshop
and we get to revisit the von Beaverpelt family
the philosophical owl Ambrosius Heidegger and Joe the Moose who runs the local cafe
Revisiting the creatures is like going back home
and I just can’t seem to get enough of them and their odd little village
Shady Hollow becomes reminiscent of Stars Hollow in this third installment of the series
The “Gilmore Girls” vibes are strong with this one
all dished up in a quaint little town took me back to the autumnal episodes of one of my favorite TV shows
I’m not sure if the name of the town in Juneau Black’s series is intentionally close to that of Stars Hollow
where the fictional Lorelai and Rory Gilmore reside
Vera’s talents are called upon for a strange case this time
when a resident of nearby Mirror Lake claims her husband has been murdered
despite his clear presence right in front of her
While most of the town is convinced Dorothy Springfield is going mad
Vera suspects there’s something a little more going on
On top of the debated mystery is an election for the next police chief of Shady Hollow
“Mirror Lake” begs to be read with a cozy blanket and a mug of hot cider
and it’s the perfect time to visit the renowned
Vera’s laid back outing turns sinister when the cold
crystal blue water of the falls becomes the scene of a violent crime
but gossip runs rampant through the village as locals try to make sense of what happened
Rumors of a shadowy ghost figure showing up around town abound
but Vera isn’t convinced something supernatural is at play
but perhaps not as simple as the arrest Orville makes
and there’s no way a wealthy heiress was involved in this kind of crime
The fox reporter again has her work cut out for her if she wants to restore peace to Shady Hollow
When Michael Balcar hits a golf ball it goes a long way
longer than hit by most of his contemporaries in the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association
How long was Balcar on Tuesday when he won the 55th NOPGA National Rental Car Assistants Championship for the third time in the last four years at Shady Hollow Country Club
with some drives hanging in the air longer than the time it takes the Ohio State marching band to make an entrance
the sound it makes sounds like a golf cart landing after being pushed off the roof of a two-story building
Probably the only guy in the Section capable of matching Balcar – and even out-distancing him at times — is Pepper Pike assistant Sean McGuire
“Sean got me at the long-drive at Brookside earlier this summer,” said Balcar
a Toledo native and Cleveland State graduate
There was no getting by Balcar by anyone on Tuesday as the 31-year-old assistant at Brandywine Country Club covered 36 holes in 65-68=133
11-under and a three-shot victory over Blake Sattler (67-69=136) and 41 others
It marked Balcar’s third victory in the last four years in this event
McGuire prevented it from being four-for-four when he defeated Balcar in a playoff last year at Avon Oaks
Westwood Country Club’s Todd Lancaster won four outright titles – 2001
Balcar and Canterbury assistant Anthony Panepento (70-71=141) will be the NOPGA’s qualifiers to the PGA’s 48th National Car Rental Assistants Championship
who is having arguably the best overall season of anyone in the Section with two wins and five top-10 finishes
is ineligible for the national event as his classification is as a teaching professional and not an assistant golf professional
overtook Sattler in the 2024 Associate Player of the Year point standings with his win
and said his victory on Tuesday was something special
“It means a lot,” he said after making just two bogeys over the 36 holes while pouring in 11 birdies and one eagle
“The tee sheet in this event carried players at a very high level
That much was evident when he laid a back-nine
6-under 30 on the field in his first round
It was highlighted by an eagle-2 on the 17th hole
shortened to 265 yards (from 375) because of Shady’s renovation project
He hit a high-arching draw to about five feet with a 2-iron and made the putt that got him to 7-under
“That was my best shot of the day,” he said with a wide smile
He started his final 18 holes on the 10th and birdied the 515-yard 12th
a nod to his length as he played Shady’s eight par-5’s in five-under
He closed his round with his final birdie on the 497-yard ninth with a huge drive that left him just 158 yards to the hole
He knocked his second shot to 10 feet for an easy two-putt
who regularly carries it 310 yards off the tee
I probably got 30 to 40 yards of roll out.”
who won the prestigious Denny Shute Match Play Championship last year
will make his first trip to the Nationals in just two tries after making 10 birdies and stringing together 10 straight 4s to start his second round
He closed strong with birdies on his final two holes
The 25-year-old native of Wooster is a player to watch the rest of this season and beyond
Pepper Pike Club’s Sean McGuire and DJ Holub and Shady Hollow’s Ian Haidle clinched the three alternate spots to the nationals
played tough all day under near-ideal conditions
Only seven players were able to shoot sub-par rounds with Balcar
Sattler and Panepento going under-par in both
Dan Wasinski (Signature of Solon) and Shady Hollow’s Haidle

Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo police have arrested the suspect for shootings that happened Monday night near Sleepy Hollow Boulevard and Coulter
The suspect in the shootings has been identified as 35-year-old Jared Pearson
Pearson has been charged with seven counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and has been booked into the Randall County Jail
police said six cars were struck by gunfire and four people were reported with non-life-threatening injuries
it’s unknown if the four were injured by bullets or fragments from the vehicle
“They’re still working on the forensics end of that
so it would be inaccurate for me to say with exact
There were a combination of injuries that could have been either or,” said Chief Martin Birkenfeld
But from what we can tell now — we can determine that it’s not later but it just
everything that we have now it just appears to be random so it’s very concerning to us
This is kind of an all hands on deck investigation for us,” said Chief Birkenfeld
Back in 2021, Amarillo saw a similar incident with several drive-by shootings
“We’ve discussed that internally and of course
our detectives worked super hard then and we were able to identify the suspect and get them in custody
but it is that same level of caution that we need
we’ll take that information,” said Chief Birkenfeld
There will be extra patrols out Tuesday night in the city
Anyone with any video from the incident that would like to share it with police can submit it online here. If you have trouble with the link or video will not upload, call 806-378-9370 and an officer with the Digital Forensics Unit will come to collect the video.
On Monday around 10:50 p.m., officers were called to a home on Lynnlee Place near Sleepy Hollow Boulevard on a person reporting his vehicle was shot.
When officers arrived, they learned the incident occurred near Coulter and Sleepy Hollow Boulevard.
Police say the victim reported that as he was driving south on Coulter near Sleepy Hollow, he heard a loud pop. The driver thought he drove over something, but then saw the bullet hole in his windshield.
Once home, police say the driver discovered he had an injury to his leg from the glass of his car window. The victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say as officers were investigating the initial call, additional calls came in from victims who had gone to area hospitals for treatment or were calling from another location to report their vehicle being shot at.
Police say it was determined all incidents occurred around 37th/Coulter and Sleepy Hollow.
Violent Crimes detectives, CSI and team members from the Amarillo Regional Crime Center were called out.

Residents of Southwest Austin will need to cut back on water use Friday as Austin Water repairs a major water line near the Davis Lane pump station
which is used to move water around the distribution system
Residents and businesses in council Districts 5 and 8 will primarily be affected, but customers should refer to the affected area map and interactive map at austinwater.org to see if they are in the affected area
Austin Water wholesale customers Shady Hollow
Those in the area can go to Bowie High School
Friday to pick up free cases of water for essential use
The utility will be taking a 48-inch water line out of service temporarily to address the leak
Austin Water Director Shay Ralls Roalson said the leak is located at a joint between pipes
“This is the kind of work that we find and repair every day all over our system just because ..
the real-world conditions put stress on our infrastructure,” Roalson said
“The reason why we wanted to be sure that we were in really good communication with our community about this particular one is because of the importance of this pipeline to serving Southwest Austin.”
The repair is expected to take up to 12 hours
and customers will be notified of its completion via the Austin Water portal
The time required for the repair may change depending on field conditions
Roalson said Fridays tend to have less of a demand for water
which is why the company chose June 7 to complete the repair
The region’s reservoirs are being filled to capacity Thursday night
which will also give the crew more time to work
but Austin Water will have limited ability to refill those reservoirs during the repair
While residents and businesses in the area may not experience any impacts
the repair may cause low water pressure and service disruptions
customers in Southwest Austin should set aside one gallon of water per person by Thursday so they may have water for essential purposes in case of a disruption
Customers can help maintain water pressure in the area by limiting their water consumption to only essential use Friday
Austin Water is asking residents and businesses to refrain from outdoor watering
power washing and washing cars and to turn off irrigation systems and postpone washing clothes and dishes
the more time we have with the water that we'll have in storage in that area of town," Roalson said
Water use tends to increase in the summer as temperatures rise
but National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Fogarty said he expects the temperature Friday to be in the mid-90s
Roalson said water quality will not be affected
as the department has processes and procedures in place to make sure that everything gets disinfected and flushed before the pipe is put back into service
"I really just hope that we can help people feel comfortable that we're taking good care of our water system," Roalson said
"We're going to take care of this leak and we're going to handle it professionally and as quickly as we can."

The course was designed by Stanley Thompson
a member of the Royal Canadian Golf Hall of Fame
It opened in 1924 as a private country club on land leased from Cleveland Metroparks and was opened to public play in 1963
The course is set up as a classic "out and in" layout
The early holes on both nines play down hill and down the prevailing wind
therefore seeming shorter than the yardage indicates
The incoming holes play uphill and into the wind making them play surprisingly long
It would be hard to find another course in Northeast Ohio where so many holes are praised for their aesthetic beauty as well as their challenge
Hole #2 is an impressive par 3 and with the tees back
it's a driver tee shot for all but the longest of hitters
which stretches 481 yards from the back tee
The back nine is shorter and more strategic
a short par 4 which are both classic risk/reward holes

Here is an alphabetical look at who they are and how they fared:
Shady Hollow Flea Market has been a destination for lakes area residents and tourists alike
With about 25 boutique cabins and more than 75 vendors
shoppers seeking treasures or trinkets will likely leave with something
“I like the rustic junk,” said Jeanne Sundal
who was shopping with Shawn Johansen and Missy Johnson
said they made the drive to Detroit Lakes specifically to visit Shady Hollow Market
“My favorite part of coming here is the thrill of the hunt,” Johansen said
adding this year she was searching for rustic decor
Bloomer’s A&K Greenhouse owner Debbie Fisher was unloading hundreds of flowers the morning of Saturday
As soon as she and her crew unloaded some flower pots
who grows the flowers and plants in her rural Frazee greenhouse
has been part of the Shady Hollow market for about 35 years
“I see customers from all over the country,” she said
Sage can be used in cooking or for spiritually
as it is known to aid in sending prayers to heaven
said there are more than 300 varieties of sage
and he is glad to offer several that are special to the region
Neisen initially rented a small cabin to sell his handmade wares and sage but decided to add on this past spring
he built a structure made of Amish lumber that sits next to the original cabin
“I left it slotted to get a breeze to go through,” he said
Art aficionados are another group of shoppers that will likely not leave the market displeased
There are plenty of opportunities to enhance living spaces
including with the metal artwork offered by Dora and Ricky Castillo
The Frazee-based couple has sold metal sculptures of roosters
giraffes and more for the past 20 years at Shady Hollow
“We decided to move into a building about five years ago,” Dora Castillo said
Since moving into the permanent storefront
the Castillos said the store keeps steady with shoppers
the 3.5 acres of grassy grounds also offer a variety of food and drink options
live music and a 200-foot slip 'n' slide that is open during flea market hours
Shady Hollow Flea Market is located at 12673 County Highway 17
Three-day weekends are offered on the Fourth of July and Labor Day
but shoppers are also allowed to get first pickings at that time
Austin is home to a complex of underground aquifers that we know are filled by a system of underground caves
Balcones Canyonland Preserve program manager
explained to the Environmental Commission at its May 16 meeting
the underground frontier that used to be readily apparent slowly disappeared
“If you wanted to make your land marketable
it wasn’t great to have caves everywhere,” he said
Caves were also plugged to use as surface water ponds and trash dumps and to prevent livestock from falling in
20 percent of Austin’s 163 documented caves were filled in or destroyed
leaving environmentally sensitive species and certain neighborhoods in peril
“A couple of caves had a couple of species in the area
and that was the only place you found them,” explained Hauwert
he added that closing off caves can lead to localized flooding
In both Shady Hollow in Southwest Austin and Tarrytown
filled-in caves have been the source of hyperlocalized floods
noted that the city now requires developers to be more vigilant when constructing around caves than in the past
“Typically if there is a cave opening … we (leave a buffer of) up to 300 feet.” This
helps protect not only the cave but also its surrounding catchment basin
are in great part thanks to 38 years of research and restoration by Hauwert
who said that even after almost four decades
the mystery that is Austin’s cave system is only partially solved
Hauwert has been working to uncover the underground maze that is the cavern network
“I have mapped about 10 percent of the recharge areas (for the Edwards Aquifer),” Hauwert said
What he has discovered has changed assumptions about our underground water system
in 1989 scientists hypothesized it took five years for water to flow from Onion Creek into Barton Springs
it takes two or three days during the wet season and up to three weeks in high summer
This then led Hauwert to investigate how long it took the Blanco River to flow into our aquifer
It turns out that it is fast enough that this Hill Country waterway is what largely sustains us during drought periods
Although much has been discovered thanks to cave-trained volunteers who have worked with Hauwert
he explained that restoration can be difficult because it is almost impossible to know what the system was like before caves were plugged
Due to increasing interest in caves though
in 2012 the Watershed Protection Department hired a team of eight men and women cavers to increase access to recharge and educational resource caves
several educational caves have been restored and complement the roster of 62 federally permitted caves
These caves are available to the public for exploration
3,243 individuals toured the newly created educational caves
which reduced traffic pressures on Austin’s federally permitted caves and kept visitors within cave traffic permit requirements
Hauwert confirmed that even though there is a long way to go
the city has come far in its protection efforts
When asked what the most effective approach to cave restoration is
“The best thing is to preserve land,” he said
This story has been changed since publication to reflect the fact that Austin does not get its drinking water from aquifers

Shady Hollow is a small town populated by friendly woodland animals — from birds to bears to its foxy reporter Vera Vixen — but it’s also home to various murders that need to be solved
The concept for this cozy mystery series was created by Sharon Nagel and Jocelyn Koehler when they used to work at Boswell Book Company together back in 2014. They go by the pen name Juneau Black and were also featured in this month's Milwaukee Magazine
"Our boss Daniel Goldin asked us to price some of these adorable little finger puppets for the children’s department
we also gave them names and occupations and then we thought it would be fun to write a story about them," Nagel recalls
With three books and a holiday novella currently out in the series
Koehler explains the premise for Shady Hollow: "It is a traditional murder mystery setup with the twist that it is all anthropomorphic animals
and it is all different types creatures and they live together in harmony
in a small town and everything is just wonderful until the bodies start piling up," she says
Both Koehler and Nagel had a similar childhood experiences growing up reading mystery novels
so it was their natural choice of genre to write
co-writing the first book about their animal characters
Koehler notes that they would trade off days taking turns to add to a document emailed back and forth to write the mystery — a method they still use today
"We did not even actually know who the murderer was when we started writing
we sort of figured that out in the course of writing," she says
"So the first book was very much 'seat of your pants' kind of
we don't know what we're doing and a lot of editing afterward
a representative from Penguin Random House read the series and gave them an offer to republish the three existing books
plus a contract to write an additional three books to add to Shady Hollow series
Sometimes other authors will come up asking
We have no advice to really duplicate it for another author," says Koehler
"Just be really lucky and have the most amazing publishing rep ever and also work in indy bookstores for 10 years — that's how you do it."

hardworking reporter whose best friend owns a bookstore

Sharon Nagel and Jocelyn Koehler have written and published one of the more unusual mysteries of the season
It would be perfect for the person who enjoys Agatha Christie and "Murder

in a little animal village that's small and sleepy enough the police chief can spend his time fishing -- until cranky toad Otto Sumpf turns unnaturally belly up in the pond near the sawmill

What a tour de force of passive aggression from our beloved mankind-savers last night
From the hot-guy Cold War between Ichabod Crane and Hollister Model Who Likes Antiquities to the Lieutenant Abbie Mills facing off against new nemesis Sheriff Reyes
from Abbie and Jenny’s sibling squabbles over their mother to Abbie’s bitchiness about a certain witchy-witch — I mean
thanks to last night’s bickering tour de force
my audible-reaction repertoire while watching Sleepy Hollow now includes the expression
“Oooooooh!” (It was the same sound I used to make when I caught my sister doing something against the rules and couldn’t wait to tell Mom
we’ll hear from her soon,” Abbie mutters under her breath near the top of the episode after Crane mentions that Katrina will surely convey valuable information to them post-haste
“Sorry about your dog,” Jenny deadpans to Reyes as she’s getting out of jail in the very next scene
your laconic I-don’t-give-a-shekel attitude is such a delight to me.) Even the Horseman of War and the Horseman of Death have a spat
“Why am I confined here while you come and go freely?” and Henry replying icily
“If you have grievance with our leader’s strategy
raise them with Moloch.” Nobody likes or trusts anybody in this episode
Maybe because the mortals are preoccupied with all the dissing
the “monster of the week” this week is not an actual humanlike entity who needs slaying
We first find out about the Tyrian shekel after fires are shot inside Sleepy Hollow Savings & Loan
small-town bank to survive both the savings-and-loan scandal of the Reagan era and the 2008 financial meltdown
After Miss Galloway and her telltale shadowy face get taken down by Reyes (God
the coin winds up in the hands of some bespectacled dweeb who looks like every guy I had a crush on in my 20s
Then we get our history lesson on Benedict Arnold. Crane knew him. Of course Crane knew him! (Crane’s like the person at a party who claims to have personal experience with whatever you’re talking about. He’s like Penelope from those Kristen Wiig SNL sketches.) Benedict Arnold became a traitor because he touched one of those coins … sure
Let’s go find Artifact Expert Who Also Surfs a Lot — a guy who
how has nobody else on this show come up with that one before
Now our protagonists’ plan of derring-do is set in motion: Abbie and Crane must find possessed Jenny in the forest before she executes Reyes
who’s gone hunting (for police department slush funds)
That means first procuring some stained glass (you know
This bit was hilarious because Numismatic Hot Guy knew about stained glass’ historical connection to Tyre
“the chief center of stained-glass production at the time.” And Crane didn’t know
“I’ve encountered a fellow whose arrogance is matched only by his annoyance.”
makes a Katrina-motivated grimace-face in front of Crane
“Your silence on the matter of my wife is most telling,” Crane intones
everybody’s a shrink in this episode (not that I’m complaining)
This gets to the crux of what’s really bothering Abbie: When it counts
will a mother (Katrina) turn against her son (Henry)
since Katrina’s bit of business this week is to therapy-talk Henry into wanting his mommy
this was one of her more worthwhile and interesting endeavors
Once they all meet up with Jenny in the forest
Abbie goes all out with the emotional articulation
“I hate her for leaving us,” Abbie admits to Jenny
who is typically more psychologically in tune with herself than Abbie is
“For taking the coward’s way out.” I think Abbie even got a little red-eyed when she then said to Jenny
“I’m not about to let them do this to us again.”
this chatty standoff was much more tense than last week’s three-way duel between HH
This pleases me because it looks like we’re finally getting some richer character development
we’re finally getting more dialogue that isn’t just about advancing plot (in fact
there was relatively little of that in this episode
but about revealing interpersonal dynamics
When Reyes sticks her neck out by giving Abbie her mom’s case file
And when Abbie and Crane were back at the bar at the end of this episode and Abbie put her hand on Crane’s
Henry’s little wooden-town replica he was working on: Did that just pertain to his plan to create a coin-based army in Sleepy Hollow
Or do you think that’s part of some bigger plan we’ll find out about in a later episode
black-brimmed hat Crane wore in his battle-scene flashbacks
Is there some historical significance to that hat I’m unaware of
the way a red coat signified you fought for the Brits
I feel like we’ve never seen Crane in that hat before
and it was kinda visually jarring because it looked like something out of Young Guns and not the American Revolution
“I know about homosexuals, thank you. I trained under Baron von Steuben … Also, I watched the finale of Glee.” Again, Sleepy Hollow writers know their history
“The man on this bottle is Paul Revere.” Right again
(To the bar waitress who needs to see I.D.): “Then your needs will be unmet

More boil water notices are being lifted across the Austin area
most Austin Water wholesale customers got the good news they can stop boiling their water
That includes the Shady Hollow MUD and the City of Sunset Valley
it's the address for businesses big and small
Doc's Backyard has a prime spot in one of Sunset Valley's giant shopping centers
Doc's and dozens of other businesses were notified the boil water notice was lifted on Wednesday
"Having water is going to make anything easier in a restaurant
bring in ice from outside — it's definitely going to make it easier," said Nathan McDonald
an assistant manager at Doc's Backyard
ALSO | Austin sees progress in moving people experiencing homelessness from campsites to housing
The restaurant is now back to making its own ice
but the extra cost and inconvenience of the five-day boil water notice have raised a lot of questions that customers want Austin Water to answer
I need to know how you're going to prevent this from happening again," said McDonald
The City of Sunset Valley is one of five Austin Water wholesale customers that waited an extra day to get its negative test results
Others notified on Wednesday are the Shady Hollow MUD
"All of our samples came back negative for bacteria
coliform bacteria," said Carolyn Meredith
Public Works Director for the City of Sunset Valley
Meredith says she has not lost confidence in Austin Water and thinks the public water system handled the boil water notice efficiently and effectively
she does want to know how the streak of three notices in four years can be stopped
"The boil water notice has a big impact on businesses," said Meredith
"What can we do to prevent this in the future?"
There are three more wholesale water customers still waiting for their test results
Rivercrest Water System and Nighthawk WSC are expected to be notified on Thursday
The story began when a bookstore owner plopped a box of children's finger puppets on the counter in front of employees Jocelyn Koehler and Sharon Nagel
Please price them, Daniel Goldin asked the duo
"As we were putting prices on these adorable little finger puppets
we gave all of these little animal characters names
imagining the woodland village life of their critters.
That night of whimsy led to three attractive self-published mysteries written by the duo, who dubbed themselves Juneau Black, which I have previously described as "'Murder
"Shady Hollow," "Cold Clay" and "Mirror Lake" are being republished by paperback giant Vintage through the Black Lizard imprint
Koehler and Nagel's beasts are now stablemates with crime-fiction masters Carl Hiaasen
Juneau Black will celebrate the republication of "Shady Hollow" with an online event 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 presented by their former employer, Boswell Books. Register through the Boswell events page (boswellbooks.com).
Koehler has self-published romance fiction as Elizabeth Cole
and also publishes speculative fiction as Jocelyn Cole
Nagel had written several novels during past National Novel Writing Months.
They wrote their first "Shady Hollow" draft during NaNoWriMo, an annual effort that encourages writers to complete 50,000 words of fiction each November
Nagel said one partner wrote on odd-numbered days
leaving a little cliffhanger for the other partner to pick up writing on even days
and settings of a coffee shop and a bookstore
making up the rest as they went along.
who owns the Nevermore bookstore. Vera tries to steer clear of town gossip Gladys Honeysuckle
a hummingbird; has both professional and romantic tension with Deputy Orville Braun
In addition to writing engaging stories with plenty of humor
Nagel and Koehler took care to make their books look as good as possible
they knew that people do judge a book by looking at its cover (and the words on the back)
"Our goal was to make our book indistinguishable" from the big publishers
But Boswell's Goldin and other local booksellers "were excited about the stories and thought they were fun and interesting and had merit," she said
Goldin also told the duo that a publisher would find a mystery series more marketable than a stand-alone novel
When Penguin Random House sales rep Jason Gobble asked if he could show the ebook files to his colleagues
Gobble told them a Penguin editor would be contacting them
(Vintage is part of the Penguin Random House family.)
That email "caused heart palpitations," Nagel said.
Reading the message from Vintage acquiring editor Caitlin Landuyt, Koehler noticed "numbers at the bottom of this email … dollar amounts and stuff." After further conversation
Juneau Black signed a "five-figure" deal for Vintage to republish the three novels
They're being released in rapid succession
and "Cold Clay" and "Mirror Lake" following in March and April.
They also were invited to contribute a Vintage Short to the publisher's line of short ebooks — a holiday story called "Evergreen Chase."
Their editor liked the "Shady Hollow" books as is and didn't request major changes
but Nagel and Koehler cleaned up little details and were able to "retcon" a few things
like adding a mention in book one of a location used in book three
They also were impressed by the attention to detail of their Vintage copy editor.
Koehler lives in the Philadelphia area now
where she continues writing her other books
Nagel is a librarian at Whitefish Bay Public Library
Their deal with Vintage is just for the three books
though they "have a little bit of a fourth book going," Nagel said
Orville and their ilk may continue in another surprising way
Japan's Hayakawa Publishing has purchased Japanese rights to the three novels.

Bygones.) Maybe all that “post-apocalyptic” stuff is just my subconscious doing the talking
since the season premiere of Sleepy Hollow certainly felt that way: barren and soulless
With Abbie gone and Joe gone and Jenny’s role significantly downsized
I have gone from all of the #Ichabbie and #Joenny feels to feeling dead inside …
I started daydreaming about our old Westchester County digs for a second there
Crane recaps all the insanity he’s been through with three years of demon-chasing and whatnot
“which means that no one is ever going to miss you.” Not true
Shady Guy Who Probably Works for Some CIA Shadow Organization
I miss him so much that I actually missed him while I watched him in “Columbia.” I miss his rapport with last season’s characters
I miss his gestures of grandeur and loyalty toward Abbie
and I miss him having someone to care and worry about besides those poorly CGI’d boogeymen
I know that you know I miss these things about Crane
because as soon as he busts out of his little interrogation cage
the first thing he finds — the very first thing you make us look at — are surveillance photos of him and Abbie together
“Who are these people?” Crane wonders about his kidnappers
as he pores over books and maps and a sketch of the Lincoln Memorial
who are these people?” I wonder about the brand-new cast
Where are the characters we actually watch this show for
How has Sleepy Hollow managed to go through so many characters — a few duds
but many totes endearing — yet we’re right back where we started
just wondering when and where the next demon might pop up
knowing full well that Crane will find a way to kill it 42 minutes later
Scrolling through this show’s IMDb page is like a dead-person montage on an awards show: Abbie
Sleepy Hollow has asked me to invest and reinvest too often and has delivered nary a satisfaction or payoff in return
that’s where Crane goes by foot from his subterranean holding cell at Reagan National
this sequence is scored to a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”) It’s at the Lincoln Memorial where Crane meets-cute with Abbie’s replacement
Homeland Security agent Diana Thomas (Janina Gavankar)
Diana had just finished saying conveniently portentous things to her partner
I don’t like change” — when they get a call: Lincoln’s statue has been decapitated
with the entire federal government located right there in Washington
a mere two agents are sent to check it out
Because the symbolic re-assassination of an American president on the grounds of a federal monument in the nation’s capital is
They probably shoulda just done a drive-by
because Eric winds up getting killed inside the memorial by a demon who looks like Marilyn Manson in a pork-pie hat
Diana doesn’t know whether to keep training her gun on Crane or to go along with his crazy suggestion that they actually chase the monster who killed her partner
and then it doesn’t matter because both the monster and Crane just suddenly vanish
She winds up tracing Crane back to his underground DCA bunker
“That’s a rather demanding attitude from someone whose life I just saved,” he replies
“I am the only one who can find the people who killed your partner.” So they poke around some tunnels together and we learn that Diana is a single mother and a former Marine
If this is supposed to be the scene that endears me to these two as our new Witnesses
Not even when Crane does his super-cute finger-pointing thing
It all just feels like going through the motions
Abbie and Crane charmed us into falling in love with them; this feels like being set up on a blind date you never asked to go on
there is a glimmer of hope amid this gloomy season debut
It arrives in the form of one nerdy supernatural believer named Jake (Jerry MacKinnon)
who has apparently been waiting for Crane inside a musty federal-agency office (what a ko-winky-dink!) that looks an awful lot like August Corbin’s library back in the Hollow and “could provide the answer to all of our needs.”
“You’re Captain Brownbeard,” Jake gushes adorably to Crane
inadvertently revealing the fanfic name he’s made up for Ichie in his head
I’m a big fan.” (He even tried to snap a selfie with Crane
which was an honest LOL for me.) Jake is endearing as all get-out and I think he should be Crane’s new partner
He can provide Crane the governmental access he’s always lacking
and why does Crane’s new partner have to be another comely woman with a badge
“I don’t believe in this stuff” and then Crane says all matter-of-factly
Jake appears to be the only new character who really wants to be where he is
Crane is very much doing what he wants to be doing
which is what he’s always done on this show
“This is the secret history of America,” he says
which includes the fun fact that John Wilkes Booth summoned a demon to kill Honest Abe
(Cue music-video-style historical-flashback diorama!) This winds up having something to do with fashioning bullets out of pennies to kill the Marilyn Manson demon
which is a job for Jake’s super-feisty co-worker
She’s basically a Miss Sassypants hybrid between a CSI detective and one of the helpers on Mythbusters
and the legitimacy of her in-office science experiments seems as improbable as sending a mere two agents to check out the decapitated Lincoln Memorial
The inevitable kill-the-demon scene arrives
and it’s pretty boring until Jenny arrives as well
(Yay!) She kills Marilyn Manson just in the nick of time
and later helps Crane do a little soul-searching about making D.C
Crane calls her “Miss Jenny” and I swoon like I did last year
Side question: Is anyone else watching Timeless
Did anyone else feel like the introduction of this evil-preneur was like another Rittenhouse subplot
that’s another wrinkle to contend with this season: A cocky businessman named Malcolm Dreyfuss (played by Jeremy Davies
doing his best impression of Sam Rockwell in Charlie’s Angels) is apparently summoning all these demons because “there really is no amount of blood that I won’t spill to get the rest of these” — these being the oversized-coin-looking thingies like the one his goon extracts from Abe Lincoln’s busted bust with his red laser eyes
although I think the twist ending with Diana’s daughter was way cooler
We know this because she obsessively draws sketches of Crane
which I thought was kind of a nifty throwback to Abbie’s symbol obsession last season
I’m wondering if the daughter going mute is meant to coincide with Abbie’s death
thus officially making her the next Witness
“That was supposed to be really badass,” one of our new demon-fighters says about the new gang and their spirit-slaying toys

For those of you who still JUST CAN’T EVEN with that season finale
TL;DR recap: There were a few touching scenes
Even if Abbie hadn’t been killed: If she were stuck in some otherworld once again or her fate had somehow been left hanging
that ending still would’ve been tear-up-the-upholstery frustrating
so now the whole reason for watching Sleepy Hollow — Team Ichabbie’s insanely delicious chemistry — is no longer
I sat on my couch with my mouth agape (too stunned to bother tearing up the upholstery
actually) for at least 20 minutes after last night’s episode ended
Team Ichabbie may have made the ultimate sacrifice to yet again ward off an apocalypse in tee vee land
that decision may have fer realsies brought about the end of days for Sleepy Hollow’s fan base
when I suggested burning the whole thing down last week
Buying into Sleepy Hollow has always meant allowing the show its numerous (i.e.
more than average for the sci-fi genre) leaps of logic
Why do bullets ricochet off this or that demon
What’s the likelihood of always finding the exact right book you need just in time to save the world
How come gods like The Hidden One are sometimes omnipotent but mostly oblivious
Just how many levels of purgatory and/or hell are there
and what’s the schematic relation between them (if any)
and why does Abbie get banished to a giant dollhouse one time and the catacombs another time
The third-season finale opens with one of the series’ most egregious leaps: The Hidden One
last seen glowing with evil red energy and literally declaring that his “final wish” was that “this world shall burn,” has apparently had a change of heart
putting off his apocalyptic plans to once again (several once-agains plague “Ragnarok”) toy with Pandora inside his lair
Crane and Abbie try to restore Pandora’s box and realize it needs to feed on a witness’ soul
“Pandora made no reference to this,” Crane states
“I fear the missing ingredient may be one of us.” And I fear that
we’re being forced to just go with the latest plot twist because the writers can’t figure out a way to make us believe in it
(As Abbie and Crane are leaving the catacombs
she senses something I didn’t pick up on at all
which is that Crane is acting like he’s withholding something from her
What he’s withholding is that he’s just now figured out
that the family tablet he was on about at the start of the season reads “eternal soul,” meaning the tablet “knew” all along about Pandora’s box needing one of them as a sacrifice
I find these narrative catch-up games tiring and insulting.)
causing her to stumble and later admit to Crane
Something’s wrong.” Betsy also senses something’s wrong
“You are not the Crane I know.” Is Betsy offended or just confused
I’m not entirely sure and at this point I don’t care — because
“Only one truth matters: Your heart belongs to Abigail Mills.” She advises Abbie
“Put him in his place every once in awhile
Keeps him honest.” Even shoddily conceived supporting characters who have made out with Crane are on Team Ichabbie
I actually thought this little goodbye scene with Betsy was adorable and managed to inject a little grace into her dumbfounding story line
there’s not much to say about Betsy except #ByeFelicia
“Abbie’s starting to sound pretty done with being a witness,” which was followed by her very sweet scene with Papa Mills (love how he’s perusing Corbin’s books like he’s been there all along; definitely one of the episode’s aforementioned touching moments)
I’m convinced the writers had no idea what to do next
because as soon as the Scooby Gang confronts THO in his lair (with “Greek fire” that looks more like “energy streams from Ghostbusters proton packs”) and Abbie fully disintegrates into Pandora’s box
the remainder of “Ragnarok” is merely filler — busy work until the episode burns up its allotted hour and can finally reveal that Abbie is truly
which Jenny takes as an opportunity to assassinate him as retribution for turning Joe into a Wendigo
instead makes everything go cattywampus: Now the problem is that Pandora’s mad pissed she didn’t get to enjoy THO’s undoing for herself (“This was my victory
so she decides to embark on an ego trip and raise hell her own way
since she’s grown fond of Earth (“As long as I am obeyed
but maybe she’ll just launch a grassroots campaign to drum up some worship by interrupting a church service in what turns out to be the most unnecessary scene in the history of Sleepy Hollow
but she is trapped,” a lame (and ultimately false) justification for the rest of the episode’s existence
I will give Sleepy Hollow credit for unveiling a sort of greatest-hits
this-is-your-life pastiche amidst Crane and Jenny’s attempts to get Abbie back
(Corbin’s return was so full of feels for me that I actually noted
“There are not enough exclamation points!!!” I cried when he went to buy Joe a beer.) There are callbacks to Moloch and to eating pie in purgatory
Then Crane gets in on the reminiscing when Pandora’s box explodes and knocks him out
We see him and Abbie relive their first meeting in Sleepy Hollow PD jail; they have drinks on her porch; we even get a final glimpse at several of Abbie’s past hairstyles
Despite the fact that these scenes are stuffed with empty platitudes like “my journey isn’t over” and “it’s time for a new beginning,” it’s all very endearing
because Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison are an amazing duo
If this show had to fall short of its potential
it could’ve at least done so while finding more reasons to put them together more often
Pandora tells Crane that Abbie was “never inside” her box and is actually “dead and gone.” She also says
your everything.” The former statements strike me as further proof that the finale was making it all up as it went along — lives are so often rescued in the final 10 minutes of SH that I didn’t believe Pandora while watching
The latter statements lead me to believe that
this show’s careless disregard of its Ichabbie ‘shippers has been fucked up
Make them just-friends or make them more-than-friends
but have a conversation about it and stick to your decision
Don’t keep stringing the ‘shippers along with your hand-kissing and your “be still my beating heart” (which no person has ever said platonically) while you know Abbie’s imminent fate full well
Here’s the kicker: I loved the final scene
I laughed at the cheeky return of that shady FBI agent and the callback to “Sympathy for the Devil” and I bawled like a goddamn baby when Crane told Abbie’s headstone about watching American Idol without her
(I’m actually blubbering right now as I type just thinking about it.) AND I STILL THOUGHT ABBIE WAS SOMEHOW ALIVE
like she’d just stroll up on Crane in the cemetery all
Favorite Crane-isms: Abbie: Oh, I know you well enough to know when you’re bugging.Crane: Very well, perhaps I am a little more than moderately agitated.
Abbie: Or we risk damaging the time stream. I get it. I saw Star Wars.Crane: Trek. Not Wars. But, yes.
Betsy: Leftenant? … There are no female officers in the Continental Army.Abbie: It’s a pet name.
Abbie: I hope you got the plates off the truck that hit me.
Abbie: In through a tree, out through a well … how about an escalator to the catacombs?Crane: It would not have the same metaphorical heft, I fear.
Abbie: Tally ho!Crane: That was not very sporting! … [grunts] What she said.
Jenny: You think [the Headless Horseman] has a chance against [Pandora]?Crane: He is the embodiment of death.
Pandora: Impossible!Crane: No, just highly improbable. [Ed.: An allegory for the whole show.]

JACKSON TWP. — Part of a utility structure at Shady Hollow Country Club caught fire Thursday afternoon and was quickly extinguished.
The fire was reported shortly after 3:30 p.m. inside a maintenance barn at the club, 4865 Wales Ave. NW, and was knocked down prior to 4 p.m., according to dispatch.
Firefighters from Massillon and Plain Township were called to assist Jackson at the scene. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
The blaze caused police to block off a section of Wales Avenue for nearly an hour, so fire engines and emergency vehicles could safely enter and leave the club.

Crafter, blogger and extremely cool mom Jennifer Perkins excels at many things — and transforming her Austin home into a Halloween land of enchantment every year is definitely high on the list. You may remember her decorating skills from a previous tour: Jennifer’s Spooky, Kooky Halloween Ready Home
it’s different than any year she’s ever decorated before
I rewrote our usual Apartment Therapy survey questions to dive a little deeper into the holiday decorating genius that is Jen Perkins
get answers to burning questions like how much money she spends on decor
and whether or not she has any Halloween-themed tattoos:
What percentage of your everyday home decor gets switched out for the holidays
Sometimes I even color code my bookshelves with orange
There is no half-assed Halloween for this house
It either looks like the Great Pumpkin threw up in here or nuthin’
Plus the fun of doing it this way is that when the holiday season is over and you get to put back out your “normal” things you get a chance to redecorate every year
I start in August (okay maybe late July) and am usually tweaking right up until Halloween
I tend to see the world through pumpkin orange-colored glasses 365 days a year
I say that and I actually probably decorate for Christmas more hardcore than I do Halloween
but when you work on an editorial calendar like I do you have to turn in Halloween content early
Last year I had to have Christmas decorations up before it was actually Halloween
How long have you been decorating your home for Halloween
This will be the eighth year I have decorated hardcore
There might have been the occasional pumpkin carving or spiderweb pre-kids
but when I started popping out the puppies it was go big or go home when it came to seasonal decorating
I threatened not to have our annual party this year just due to other commitments and my children acted as if I told them Santa was dead
Needless to say the party is on and if they have their way will continue
I’m getting a new Halloween tattoo this October to commemorate
What’s this year’s Halloween decor theme or inspiration
I have a lot of old doll heads around this year so maybe that is the theme
My collection of vintage Halloween costumes is also close to 50 and spread over two trees
a garland and a mantel so that could also be the theme
I love the neon colors and kitsch of the vintage costumes
Last year at my annual Halloween party I had decorated the shelves in the powder room with vintage medical equipment — dentures
I was later told by a few parents that their kids were afraid to go to the bathroom alone
On the flip of that other adults told me it was their favorite room in the house
This year I have done the shelves in a funky ’70s Halloween neon orange type theme
Since I have a five and seven year old I really try and steer clear of things that might scare them or their friends
This year I have a feeling my dining table will get a few looks
Okay confess: How much did you spend on Halloween decor this year
Honestly on decorations not that much so far
especially for items like black glass that is not really a Halloween decoration
On my recent trip to Round Top I bought four masks for $40 (one included Mork from Ork in the box for $5)
What really costs money is the party (food
Plus ya know I’m the brand ambassador for a Christmas tree company so those are on the house
How can someone incorporate their own everyday items into Halloween decorating
The easiest thing is to look at the color of things
For me I have my mother’s typewriter from college as a Halloween decoration because it is orange
I collect vintage cameras and in the right setting they can be spooky
Not everything has to scream BOO in your face — black and orange Murano glass ashtrays
game pieces and more can be Halloween decorations in the right setting
Where do you store your decor — and where does your “everyday” decor go when the house is Halloween-ified
When the boxes and tubs of Halloween come down from the attic the everyday decor goes inside and back up in the attic
Don’t dare open a closet or a cabinet as a sea of folk art might come tumbling down on you
As with holiday decor you have to take into account the heat in attics when you store things
melt spooky candles and God forbid warp Halloween masks
My house has two attics — one is entirely holiday decorations
Okay I might have taken over two closets and possibly a few shelves in a linen room to store holiday decorations
It’s for the kids people; I need that closet space

Reporter Vera Vixen hadn’t anticipated that moving to Shady Hollow would lead to her involvement in quite so much crime-solving
things seem to have calmed down with spring finally bringing its warmth to her small town
her main concern outside of her own career lies in convincing her overworked boyfriend Chief Constable Orville Braun to hire a deputy so he can finally get some rest
So when he suggests that they both take a day off to travel by ferry to local beauty spot Twilight Falls
They pack a picnic lunch with plans to travel back by the last boat
accompanied by a wide variety of creatures also intent on a lovely day out
in a gorgeous environment with something for everyone:
strolling along the quieter stretches of the river or exploring the many forest paths nearby
where they may find some privacy from the rambling crowds
More than one couple has proposed or wed here
it is not surprising that it will also inspire a crime
While Shady Hollow has been crime-free for a while
The entire town knows of the heated conflict surrounding the relationship between spoiled socialite Stasia von Beaverpelt and hardworking handyman Jonah Atwater
most of the opposition comes from the couple’s parents
Stasia’s mother Edith is horrified that her daughter is dating the help
but Jonah’s father Shelby has an even more inflexible line
despising Stasia for not being an otter like himself and Jonah
Shelby and the lovers have gotten into very public rows on the subject
including while on the ferry to Twilight Falls that day
So when a struggle takes place at the top of the falls and Shelby plunges over to certain doom
suspicion almost immediately lands on headstrong Stasia as his murderer
but she isn’t the kind of person to dirty her hands with the physical activity of murder
Alas that Orville does not see things the same way
inevitably causing a strain in his and Vera’s relationship
It isn’t that Vera wants to doubt her beau
But with Edith threatening to bring in big-time city lawyers to destroy Orville’s case and possibly career
Vera wants to get to the truth before her straitlaced boyfriend’s reputation and health can suffer even more
no one else seems to have anything even remotely resembling a grudge against Shelby
Will Vera be able to find the real culprit before her efforts to clear Stasia’s name land her in grave danger once more
This fourth book in the anthropomorphic cozy crime series is one of its strongest
as even greater details are established regarding not only the geography surrounding Shady Hollow but also the mores of the world at large
The discussions of food and the (prior) predator-prey dynamics are engrossing
as is the heartwarming consideration of interspecies relationships
after she witnesses yet another disagreement between Shelby
So the spat at the popcorn cart hadn’t been a one-off
Shelby really had dug in his heels over the matter
Relationships between different species were certainly not a unique thing
the issue had become more salient when she began dating Orville
so the association with a creature who was so completely different from what she was used to was a new (and exciting) experience for Vera
She tried to imagine what her family might say–not that they were around to discuss it
While Vera could guess that her mother would make all sorts of remarks to the effect of but I wanted grandkits
she couldn’t ever picture either parent forbidding the relationship entirely
The fully realized world of Shady Hollow is a delight to escape to
as justice is served and love eventually conquers all

There has been a cabin tucked into this part of Sand Run Metro Park — near the ford where the creek spills across the parkway — for nearly a century
Crews are finishing up the interior of the new Shady Hollow Lodge
the newest jewel in Summit Metro Parks’ crown and available for rent beginning February
The 1,200-square-foot lodge replaces the smaller log cabin that was destroyed by a fireplace accident last year
replaced a square hunter’s hut that has been on the spot since near the turn of the last century
“We never really considered not rebuilding because there’s always been something here,” said Jen Harvey
The project was a first for the non-profit Summit Metro Parks Foundation
which led a fundraiser — the first capital fundraiser in its 26-year history — to build the lodge
Individuals and area foundations chipped in more than $100,000
supplementing the insurance settlement and other sources to reach the $571,000 final cost
Metro Parks planning chief Nick Moskos said the district has always had shelters and pavilions
Then he came across a photo while researching chandeliers on the internet
it features a vaulted ceiling with exposed trusses and chandeliers
and a wall of windows lined up to overlook the scenic woods and the meandering creek below
There’s a patio and a lawn over which strands of festive lights will hang
bordered by a small wall of old barn stones
a serving kitchen (no stove) and a fireplace made of locally quarried stone
Two large century-old lanterns rescued from storage have been wired to hang over the inside of the entrance
The park’s own carpenters are making tables of locally harvested wood
“We didn’t want people to have to put their elbows on Formica,” Moskos said
“Anytime we could get a natural element to add to the character
The lodge at 1750 Sand Run Parkway in Akron will be used for education and nature programs by park naturalists
It also will be available to rent for parties or meetings
with a rate of $120 for weekdays and $165 for weekends for Summit County residents
Harvey said the fire that destroyed the old Shady Hollow shelter was caused by embers that lit the dry wood paneling around the fire box
the park district ordered inspection of every fireplace in the park system
Some were removed because they posed the same problem that caused the Shady Hollow fire; others were repaired or modified with the help of the Summit Metro Parks Foundation

Travis County officials on Tuesday approved a redistricting plan that keeps the southwestern Travis County neighborhood Shady Hollow in Precinct 3
Residents there clashed with Huber last year over her opposition to the proposed Texas 45 Southwest highway
and she was pushing to move them to another precinct
the new district boundaries move Pflugerville from Precinct 2 to Precinct 1
Typically left-leaning University of Texas- and Hyde Park-area voting boxes will go to Precinct 2
which will also get a handful of Republican-leaning boxes north of Lake Austin from Precinct 3
which currently encompasses the county's western half and the most people among commissioners' districts
"I'm disappointed," Huber said just before commissioners' approval of the plan
and I will be delighted to represent Precinct 3 as it is carved out."
Commissioners have considered 15 different redistricting maps over the past several weeks
The process comes every 10 years as new census data reveal population growth and demographic shifts
The biggest shift of the past decade was of African Americans from East Austin to Pflugerville
To preserve a district with a concentration of blacks
Huber had sought to move Shady Hollow voting boxes to Margaret Gómez's Precinct 4
Many Shady Hollow residents wanted to stay in Huber's district
even as they appeared likely to oppose her seeking a second term because of her opposition to the highway plan in the area
"We're very pleased," Shady Hollow Homeowners Association board member Pam Baggett said of the new district map
Precinct 3 will remain the most populated district with 266,927 people
Precinct 4 in southeast Travis County will continue to be majority-Hispanic
The district will have 245,573 people and be 56.1 percent Hispanic
Precinct 1 in northeast Travis County will have 251,153 people — 178,687 voting age
The district will be about 20 percent black
Precinct 2 will have 260,613 people ; 210,042 voting age
The new districts will take effect immediately after federal approval
As a turbulent year grinds down to its wintry conclusion
what could be more comforting than a novel set in a cheerful country village where everyone knows each other's names and (mostly) forgives each other's quirks
where the coffee is always on and the pastry case always full
and where the bones of a missing wife and mother have just been unearthed in the local orchard?

Vera Vixen, the determined reporter heroine of the first novel, returns for more sleuthing here. While all reporters are foxes, she also happens to be one genetically. Her friend and sounding board is Lenore Lee, a raven who owns the Nevermore bookstore, apparently the tallest building in town. (Turn your mental Poe-detector on for her scenes.)
The large skeleton unearthed in a local orchard turns out to be the bones of Julia Elkin, a haughty moose who apparently walked out on her husband, Joe, and son Joe Jr. years ago. Joe, owner of the popular Joe's Mug eatery, is one of Shady Hollow's most popular creatures, but he's immediately suspect No. 1. That's how deputy Orville Braun sees it, or at least that's the line the plodding bruin first pursues.
Vera, who's been spending time with the big bear lately, sees it differently, which puts her in conflict with her possible paramour. She pursues her own investigation around her other newsroom assignments, which include profiling Octavia Grey, a silvery mink who has just opened a charm school in the village.
Set in this timeless fantasy village, "Cold Clay" avoids the technical challenges posed by things like cellphones. Vera has to walk places to interview folks. It also sidesteps chain-of-evidence and forensic protocol, which seem to be missing from Orville's Big Book of Policing. Vera withholds evidence at least twice as she works around Mr. Big and Furry. And the size of the newspaper staff in this little village could make a contemporary journalist swoon.
Even in this relatively gentle world, baser impulses lurk. Hearing an account of one creature biting another, Vera reacts with shock: "Every creature feared this most of all — the knowledge that despite all they'd achieved as a civilized society, a darkness still lurked within them, something that could undo all their rationality and leave them with only instinct."
Fortunately, in Shady Hollow there is always coffee and the support of a winged- or four-legged friend nearby.

The Texas 45 Southwest highway has been part of Central Texas' road plans for a generation now

The continuing delay has frustrated suburbanites south of Austin
those who would like to use the quicker connection from Hays County to MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) and those who live along increasingly traffic-choked Brodie Lane
With a move afoot to erase Texas 45 Southwest entirely from the area's future
that frustration bubbled up Monday evening at a public hearing on Central Texas' long-range transportation plan
"The idea that somebody after all these years
to come along and say the need for this road has disappeared \u2026 is really just beyond comprehension," said Jim Dorsey
Travis County Commissioner and CAMPO Board Member Karen Huber initiated the move to delete Texas 45 Southwest from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's 2035 plan
who in a close 2008 race defeated the road's long-time champion
had supported the road during the election

'You're probably going to get your road.' I don't make promises until I have the information."
The estimated $99 million to build the 3.6-mile

would inevitably spark more development in the environmentally sensitive area
potentially bringing even more traffic to Brodie Lane
"The Shady Hollow folks are in a desperate situation
and I would agree that needs to be addressed," Huber said
"But 45 Southwest studies are not definitive on whether it would solve Brodie's problems."
showed that the road would decrease daily traffic on Brodie near Slaughter Lane in 2015 from 23,000 vehicles to 19,500
Huber has a resolution on today 's Travis County Commissioners Court agenda asking her colleagues to support culling Texas 45 Southwest from the CAMPO plan
The CAMPO board includes 19 elected officials from the City of Austin
Pflugerville and all five counties in the area
The board got an earful on Texas 45 Southwest on Monday night
including from about two dozen residents of Shady Hollow and other southern Travis County neighborhoods
noted the billions of dollars that the 2035 plan allots for rails and roads elsewhere around Central Texas
"But our county commissioner wants to remove the one road that would help our area," Goodwin said
"We need (Texas) 45 and we've needed it for a very long time."
The CAMPO board will vote on the $26.8 billion
The 25-year plan is rewritten every five years and is often amended

Ohio -- The new Shady Hollow Lodge is taking shape in the woods of Akron's Sand Run Metro Park
but the new lodge will look completely different than the building that went up in flames last year
The previous facility - a small, cabin-style structure built in 1988 - was lost to an accidental fire in 2016. With help from the Summit Metro Parks Foundation
Summit Metro Parks is building the new facility with larger windows
Designed by Peninsula Architects, the firm designing the Cuyahoga Valley National Park's new Central Visitor Center
is on track to be completed by year's end
Park naturalists will use the space for public programs
The lodge also will be available to host events such as reunions and bridal showers in early 2018
The district is currently taking reservations for the lodge in February and beyond
The rate for Summit County residents is $120 weekdays
Out-of-county residents pay $170 for on weekdays
Summit County residents pay less because the park district is funded by a county real estate tax
Sand Run Metro Park is the park district's most-visited park
Sand Run's other reservable facility is Mingo Lodge
which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s
