During a road trip to Louisville in late April Iowa Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw walked back to the dugout following an out and found co-hitting coach Rick Strickland held up his pointer finger near his thumb to signify how he was barely off with his swing “He could almost predict that he was coming out of this thing,” Strickland said He was on the verge of breaking through with his swing The struggling prospect quickly turned things around Shaw has since been one of the hottest hitters in Iowa’s lineup and is making his case to return to the big leagues The 23-year-old first-round pick by the Cubs in 2023 opened the year as Chicago’s starting third baseman But Shaw struggled during his first stint in the big leagues one homer and one double in 18 games and 58 plate appearances the confidence was down a little bit,” Strickland said Strickland believes that in the midst of Shaw’s struggles started making unnecessary changes and adjustments Major League Baseball is not a developmental league and with Chicago chasing a spot in the postseason So Shaw was sent to Des Moines so he could have an opportunity to get his swing back and be in the lineup on a daily basis More: Iowa Cubs baseball: Prized prospect Matt Shaw talks about his demotion back to minors “We definitely looked in and took some things that maybe he was doing differently in his move — maybe causing himself to be a little bit off-balance in his swing but just getting him back to being grounded and being a really good athlete that he actually is,” Strickland said With the help of Strickland and co-hitting coach Rachel Folden with Shaw going 1-for-17 in his first five games back in the minors Shaw was getting back into a rhythm of playing every day and feeling good at the plate More: Meet Iowa Cubs co-hitting coach Rachel Folden he was feeling much better,” Strickland said Now Shaw is feeling more comfortable and getting results He entered the May 3 game with the Buffalo Bisons riding a six-game hitting streak Four of those games were multi-hit contests including a four-hit performance on April 29 Shaw lined out to left field but the exit velocity on the ball was 106.6 mph Shawn's rapid improvement is no surprise to Strickland “I didn’t think coming back here would be much of a problem,” Strickland said It’s just something that he naturally does So getting him back here a little bit allowed him enough time to catch his break and get it back together I would say nothing special as far as mechanical tricks or things we did It’s really probably just getting that mental reset more than anything.” who had a .333 batting average and a .967 OPS in his first 11 games with Iowa he's likely to get another chance with Chicago Strickland believes that Shaw has put himself in a good position to succeed at the big leagues this time around the Register's sports enterprise and features reporter has been working at the newspaper since 2008 2020 and 2023 Iowa Sportswriter of the Year Reach him at tbirch@dmreg.com or 515-284-8468 The 14-year-old shattered the record books with his 35-ball century Playing his first IPL season at such a young age Vaibhav put his name in the record books with the second-fastest century in the tournament's history “Sachin Tendulkar succeeded as a teenager not simply due to talent but because of a solid support system - a stoic temperament a family that protected him from the circus equally talented and perhaps more flamboyant Prithvi Shaw is another wunderkind who has fallen but may yet find a way back to the pinnacle,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo Kambli and Tendulkar burst onto the scene together while the latter became the one of the greatest ever to play the game while the left-handed turned into a forgotten star The Master Blaster rewrote cricketing history during his illustrious career with a total of 34,357 runs in international cricket across all formats (Test He amassed 15,921 runs in Tests and 18,426 runs in ODIs Kambli only managed to play 17 Tests and 104 ODIS; the St Louis Cardinals Any deal with the Cardinals might be questionable due to the division rivalry but the Cubs have the top farm system in baseball and the Cardinals should be interested in a trade with them if the price is right Outside of that, the team might have to get creative, perhaps trading for somebody like Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays Chicago Cubs second baseman Matt Shaw (6) rounds third base in the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the Tokyo Series at Tokyo Dome It’d be strange to see the Blue Jays move on from Bichette but many have suggested that it’ll happen With his contract up at the end of the year Toronto will likely have to pay him $200 million plus something its front office might not want to do the Cubs would be a perfect suitor for him If Bichette were willing to slide over to third base he’s had three years with 20-plus in his seven-year career Bichette will be paid handsomely. Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors predicts he Copyright © 2023 Shaw Local News Network BOZEMAN — As the spring season comes to a close for the Montana State rodeo team the men sit atop the Big Sky Region standings A large part is due to senior standout Wes Shaw "Wes has been the center point of our team the bareback rider is going to get a lot of points for the team," Montana State coach Kyle Whitaker said so he gives us four chances at every rodeo Shaw transferred to Montana State from the College of Southern Idaho last year The support from the community has made the past two seasons special for him "I couldn’t believe what they’re willing to do to help us They sent me down to a couple different clinics to better myself I couldn’t believe what I was expecting to what I actually got." Montana State is very strong in the all around Cole Gerhardt and Holden Atkinson are all among the top three in the region standings The ability to compete together every week pushes the group to be their best "It’s really good to have people that are pushing each other in multiple events and I think that sets us apart from a lot of rodeo teams." "Having everybody that knows what they’re doing in every event it’s fun going at each other and pushing each other farther and farther more than what we thought we could," Shaw said "I take a lot of mental hits and drawing kind of doesn’t help if you’re not drawn good but all in all it’s just I’ve got to go out there and have fun and lay it out there and let God take the wheel from there." Shaw plans to go pro after the season ultimately wraps at the College National Finals Rodeo the Chicago Cubs are expected to recall Matt Shaw from Triple-A Iowa and reinstall him as their everyday third baseman That optimistic outlook reflects the organization’s belief in its 2023 first-round pick It’s also the reality of the situation — the current alternatives do not appear to be all that compelling the first-place Cubs have captured the top end of their projections for multiple hitters and the offense as a whole That was apparent in Thursday’s 8-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki hit home runs off Paul Skenes in the fifth inning to propel Chicago to another series win That clear need drove the decision to pursue Alex Bregman who ultimately chose the Boston Red Sox during spring training $120 million contract that includes opt-out clauses and a substantial amount of deferred money an All-Star third baseman and a Gold Glove defender 24 RBIs and a .985 OPS through his first 31 games with the Red Sox That’s only a snapshot of Bregman’s hot start shows that the Cubs have used 13 different starting third basemen since last year’s Opening Day In addition to reinforcing the pitching staff Jed Hoyer’s front office will explore all options at third base leading up to the July 31 trade deadline The broader issue is that the Cubs may have difficulties finding an upgrade third base is not a position currently teeming with solid two-way players and it is too early to tell how many clubs will be aggressive sellers at the trade deadline Cubs third basemen are ranked 25th in baseball but it’s also not the type of bottom-of-the-league production the club was getting early last season from catcher and center field the most productive third basemen in the game are playing for obvious contenders or teams that are unlikely to consider selling or are doubtful on matching up with the Cubs was a player the Cubs inquired about during spring training Louis Cardinals were not interested in trading an All-Star within the division to an historic rival The Cubs were simply doing due diligence in that case but the landscape hasn’t changed that much since then The Cardinals helping push the Cubs over the edge on their way to October just doesn’t seem to be a likely scenario Most realistic options wouldn’t be significant upgrades over solid role players such as Jon Berti or Nicky Lopez The truth is that offensive production from third basemen is nearing an all-time low That is currently the second-lowest mark in baseball behind second basemen That 93 wRC+ at the position would be the third-lowest mark for third basemen since 1950 only the 2022 season wouldn’t rank among the bottom 10 seasons in offensive productivity over the last 75 years there seems to be a dearth of offensive talent at the position right now Bregman still remained a free agent in the middle of February limited start to spring training due to an oblique injury came into the season with zero major-league at-bats and only 35 games of Triple-A experience on his resume Shaw produced a .172 batting average and a .535 OPS the Cubs decided to option him to Iowa for a mental break and the chance to readjust his stance and swing “This is not a place for a young player to tinker,” Hoyer said But he needs to go work on some stuff now and reset we’ll probably have a little bit of a revolving door there for a bit while we play matchups I would love it if one of these guys would get hot and grab more of the playing time.” Patience is in short supply this year in Chicago where the Cubs have not hosted a playoff game since 2020 and Hoyer is working through the final year of his contract Cubs manager Craig Counsell was not interested in giving Shaw the longer runway that he provided last year for Pete Crow-Armstrong whose plus speed and elite defense in center field could not be easily replaced by anyone else on the roster the organization’s decision was not shocking “I understand you have to perform to play in the big leagues,” Shaw told Des Moines Register reporter Tommy Birch “If they feel like getting some consistent at-bats (after) the shortened spring is going to be something that helps our team in the coming months — and if I’m a player who’s in a rhythm for our squad — then I think that’s a good thing All seven players who started a game at third base for the Cubs last season are no longer in the organization Christopher Morel was packaged in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for Isaac Paredes who was subsequently moved to the Houston Astros in the Tucker deal Miles Mastrobuoni and Luis Vázquez were each designated for assignment or non-tendered the Cubs had already started six different players at third base After Chicago re-signed Lopez and designated Gage Workman for assignment last week Counsell said: “It doesn’t change the nature of third base here You’re going to see multiple third basemen in the game on a day-to-day basis.” look for pinch-hit opportunities and utilize Berti’s speed in certain situations Then hope that something clicks at Triple A for Shaw so that he can resume his learning curve against the best pitching in the world with this move we’re going to play people with experience over there a little more,” Counsell said is to get Matt Shaw back playing that position we’re hoping Matt Shaw turns into that guy.” (Top photo: Ronald Martinez / Getty Images) Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information Bloomberg quickly and accurately Washington St., Momence, will be closing its doors May 31. The establishment did not renew its liquor license at the end of April in anticipation of the closing. The restaurant’s ownership announced their decision in an April 26 Facebook post. Father-son duo Avelino and Eric Vela took over Pizza Stone Express in February 2017, according to its website. “It has been a true honor to be able to serve this wonderful community for the past 8 years,” Eric Vela said in the post. “Many deciding factors have went into this and it was not an easy decision by any means. I want to thank each and every one of you for the support over the past 8 years, it has been an incredible journey.” The owners are encouraging customers to come in through the end of the month and use any gift cards. ExpandDeKalb Ward 5 Alderman Andre Powell offers remarks April 28 DeKALB – School resource officers from the DeKalb Police Department are here to stay for at least the next five years in DeKalb schools The DeKalb City Council this week voted to extend an agreement with DeKalb School District 428 through 2030 for the officers which are stationed at various buildings throughout the school day Police Chief David Byrd touted the collaboration between the city and the school district “What we have in place is working,” Byrd said “The collaboration between the DeKalb Police Department and District 428 has never been stronger.” Since 2022, the DeKalb Police Department has provided two officers at DeKalb High School one officer each at Huntley and Clinton Rosette middle schools and one officer who rotates among the district’s six elementary schools that fall within city limits It looks like protection and building relations I can appreciate that having kids in the district.” Under the extended agreement the district reimbursed the city up to 75% of the total costs for each SRO benefits and overtime pay directly arising from their work in the district Byrd said he feels encouraged by the numbers According to council documents the city reported an almost 10% difference in the number of police reports across all the district’s schools between 2023 and 2024 Mayor Cohen Barnes questioned whether adding another SRO would make sense for DeKalb schools “With Mitchell Elementary coming online as an additional elementary school at this point has there been discussions about maybe a need to have someone that’s not doing all the elementary schools?” Barnes said the student services director in District 428 said the district is exploring alternatives “The district has considered other supports that we can provide for Mitchell,” Gerdes said “We’re going to look at adding another restorative dean to Mitchell because we’ve seen our restorative deans be really effective in reducing what would be out-of-school suspensions and expulsions but we have looked at other ways to support our code of conduct implementation.” Second Ward Alderwoman Barb Larson expressed appreciation to the SROs for all they do They care about you as much as you care about them and you see it every time we see any of you around the kids.” Fifth Ward Alderman Andre Powell shared that sentiment. Powell left his role on the school board to take up a City Council appointment about a year ago. “Coming off the school board, I used to see all you guys inside the buildings,” Powell said. “The kids love these guys. It doesn’t look like policing. It looks like protection and building relations. I can appreciate that having kids in the district.” ExpandRoute 47 in Huntley would be closed for an unknown period of time early Saturday evening (Photo provided by the Huntley Fire Protection District) Four people were taken to the hospital after a crash Saturday near Huntley shut down Route 47 for several hours [ UPDATE: Pingree Grove woman, 2-year-old boy among those injured in Huntley-area crash ] The Huntley Fire Protection District was called to the intersection of Route 47 and Foster Road at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday; crews found a five-vehicle accident with damages ranging from moderate to heavy, according to a department news release. That said, I didn’t want to do too much, just hit the ball hard in the middle of the field.” What Swanson did was blast a 3-run homer well over the fence in left field to give the Pirates a one-run lead. “I was able to put a good swing on it and lift it a little bit. I knew it was gone the second I hit it. Pretty awesome feeling.” Ottawa then added a two-out, two-run single by Jacob Rosetto in the frame and eventually secured a 12-10 Interstate 8 Conference win. L-P's Kaedin Bond smacks a double against Ottawa on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Ottawa High School. (Scott Anderson) Ottawa (11-11, 3-5) trailed 8-0 to L-P (11-10, 3-5) heading to the bottom of the fifth. “It was a tough first four innings for sure,” Ottawa coach Levi Ericson. “We just weren’t able to get anything going. But then we started to get a little momentum in the fifth and it just carried over into the sixth. Then Adam comes up in that spot, and I thought to myself, ‘This is the moment this kid is designed for.’” Ericson had high praise for the work of relief guys of George Shumway (1⅔ IP), Noah Marvin (2 IP), Brody Pagakis (Win, ⅓ IP) and Colt Bryson (Save, 1 IP, 1 K) “The first thing I said in the postgame talk was credit to our bullpen,” Ericson said. “As a coach this isn’t what you plan for, but our relief guys came in and did a great job of keeping things within reach for us to be able to come back.” Ottawa's Jace Vieth makes a catch in the outfield on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Ottawa High School. (Scott Anderson) La Salle-Peru led 3-0 after one on an RBI double by Kaedin Bond and RBI singles by Braylin Bond and Jett Hill. The Cavs added two in the second on RBI hits by Kaedin Bond and Braylin Bond. In the third, L-P tacked on three more on an RBI hit by Jackson Piecha, a wild pitch and Adrian Arzola scoring on the back end of a double steal. “We were cruising along, and everything was going well through four innings,” L-P coach Matt Glupczynski said. “We had a great start, but I thought we lost focus. Then in the fifth we made an error, walked a few guys, hit a guy and then later on a ball hit between first and second didn’t go after a ball, and they scored two.” In the Ottawa five-run fifth, Bryson and Swanson coaxed bases-loaded walks before Jace Veith was hit by a pitch and Brendyn Fuchs shot a ball into right field to score two and make it 8-5. L-P's Jett Hill delivers a pitch to Ottawa on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Ottawa High School. (Scott Anderson) The Cavs scored a run in the top of the sixth before the hosts used an infield error, three walks and a sacrifice fly by Bryson to make it 10-7 with Swanson coming to the plate. The visitors scored onve in the seventh before Bryson struck out the final batter. “Then, in the sixth an error starts things off, then we walked some more hitters and finally [Ottawa] came up with a couple of big hits,” Glupczynski said. We just didn’t finish.” Both sides open three-game I-8 series Monday with Ottawa hosting Sycamore and La Salle-Peru traveling to Rochelle. Members of the Ottawa baseball team hope for a rally against L-P on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Ottawa High School. Daniel Briere is in a tough spot right now. One year removed from almost making the playoffs, the Flyers had a rough season that culminated in the ouster of their head coach. There is quite a lot that this team needs to change However, if not handled correctly, this team will continue in this never-ending cycle of rebuilding, which they've be stuck on for the last decade. After all, there is only so much that fans will take We're not used to seeing our beloved Flyers be so stagnant A lot of that is going to come down to Briere's decision on who will helm the bench It's going to be hard to attract a free agent if they see Philly as stuck in the doldrums where champions are engraved forever on the Stanley Cup It's tempting to look at some of the coaches who have been dismissed across the NHL It's also tempting to look within at some of the guys who've been in the organization for years ever since the team parted ways with John Tortorella assistant coach Brad Shaw has gotten the most out of the players on this lackluster team Maybe he is the guy this team needs to give some serious consideration to Shaw unlocked something with this young offense that Tortorella was holding back. These wins also came with Sam Ersson and Rasmus Ristolainen out as well When you consider that this offensive output also came after the team traded away Morgan Frost He's been an assistant coach for several organizations He had briefly served as an interim coach for the New York Islanders in 2005-06 "Why hasn't he had his shot?" Why hasn't he gotten that coaching job Maybe this "good ol' boy" system has prevented him from getting his job Someone at some point should have had an interview and an opportunity to take on a head coaching role Has he never stood out as a guy who has leadership potential Is he someone who is "doomed" to be the assistant in the few years he was coaching at the AHL and IHL levels is this because of the quality players he had working with him or is this a reflection on him Is he good at working with and developing young players For a guy who will be called upon to mentor that is going to be a necessary factor in consideration his future here Should he be the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers His lack of coaching experience does raise flags Rob Thomson never managed an MLB team and was forever a bench coach or assistant coach until the Phillies hired him the team has made it to the playoffs every season including capturing a pennant in his first season Thomson just needed a chance to prove himself I look at how the offense flourished under Shaw We've long thought that these players could score I do think that he at least deserves an interview I feel that Briere should ask some of the veteran players they've been here under quite a few coaches now and would have great input on how the locker room felt under Shaw If the guys are willing to go to battle for him on the ice He may not be the sexiest candidate out there in terms of credentials I don't know if he is the best person for the job but he at least deserves a shot to prove himself © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER However, if not handled correctly, this team will continue in this never-ending cycle of rebuilding, which they've be stuck on for the last decade. After all, there is only so much that fans will take Shaw has been around the NHL for years. He's been an assistant coach for several organizations, both in the NHL and AHL. He had briefly served as an interim coach for the New York Islanders in 2005-06, posting an 18-18-4 record. He has hockey knowledge. He just needs his shot. Which begs the question, "Why hasn't he had his shot?" Why hasn't he gotten that coaching job? To some degree, it might be because the NHL, more than any other sport, loves to recycle cast-off guys. Maybe this "good ol' boy" system has prevented him from getting his job. At the same time, he's 61. Someone at some point should have had an interview and an opportunity to take on a head coaching role. Why hasn't it happened? Is there something wrong with him? Has he never stood out as a guy who has leadership potential? Is he someone who is "doomed" to be the assistant, but never the top guy? Furthrmore, in the few years he was coaching at the AHL and IHL levels, his teams didn't play well. Now, is this because of the quality players he had working with him or is this a reflection on him? Is he good at working with and developing young players? For a guy who will be called upon to mentor, train, teach, and build up a youthful core, that is going to be a necessary factor in consideration his future here. Should he be the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers? I don't know. His lack of coaching experience does raise flags. However, Rob Thomson never managed an MLB team and was forever a bench coach or assistant coach until the Phillies hired him. In three seasons, the team has made it to the playoffs every season, including capturing a pennant in his first season. Thomson just needed a chance to prove himself. Maybe the same is true for Shaw. Again, I look at how the offense flourished under Shaw. We've long thought that these players could score. In the final few weeks of the season, they did. There could be something there. I do think that he at least deserves an interview. Likewise, I feel that Briere should ask some of the veteran players, such as Travis Konency, Travis Sanheim, and Sean Couturier, for their opinions of Shaw. After all, they've been here under quite a few coaches now and would have great input on how the locker room felt under Shaw. That's important. If the guys are willing to go to battle for him on the ice, he may be the guy to lead the Flyers. He may not be the sexiest candidate out there in terms of credentials, but he has some things going for him. I don't know if he is the best person for the job, but he at least deserves a shot to prove himself. Flyers' assistant coach shows he may have what it takes to coach this crew. Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker May 05, 2025 at 5:00 pm CDTIt’s Monday evening, and a lovely one at that. The mercury on our thermometer has crept up to 80 degrees. The laundry dried really fast, so it didn’t matter that I did other jobs around the house before I started with laundry. Now I want to share what our weeks ahead will be like. Yesterday, daughter Verena and Daniel Ray were “published” to be married June 20. For the readers who wonder what published means, I will explain. When a couple plans to get married, it is kept a secret from everyone except family and close friends. About six to eight weeks before their wedding date, the bishop announces the wedding date to the whole church. This is said right before church services are over. Usually, families from both the bride and groom attend the service to be there to share the joy of the couple’s announcement. This is always an exciting day for the couple, and also a relief that they can freely talk about their wedding day to anyone. Often, the “secret” slips out somehow, and some people find out about the upcoming wedding. Most often, if it does, they will be kind enough not to spread it further. My daughters never really cared if it wasn’t a “surprise” to everyone. One of our local community stores has a calendar hung in the back of the store so couples planning to get married in our community can put a sticker on the day they choose. This helps from not having two weddings on the same day. When daughter Loretta and Dustin were married, daughter Elizabeth and Tim had a nephew who married the day before their wedding. This made a very busy week for them with a wedding on each side of their family. They made it work, though. Verena and Daniel will be married in Dustin and Loretta’s pole barn, and the reception will be held here. This is our fifth and last daughter getting married. It will be so different for me not to have a daughter in the house anymore. Verena isn’t going far, though. We will put a wall through the pole barn and make living quarters in there for the newlyweds. Verena will still go over and help Loretta every day with the children while Dustin’s at work. I am glad she will be just a hop and skip out of our door for now. Daniel Ray is a great addition to our family. He’s always helpful around here and a great friend to Verena. I wish this couple many happy years together. Daniel Ray is the first of his siblings to leave home and get married, so this will be a great adjustment for their family. I remember when our first one left the house and how different it was for us. The house seemed so empty with one less person. The garage sale for sister Verena was a success last week, and we also barbecued 400 pounds of chicken for donation toward son Kevin’s handicapped buggy. We sold out on the chicken, which we were very happy with. We appreciate everyone who helped support this. Kevin will be so happy once he can leave without having to be lifted all the time. Tomorrow afternoon is the public auction at my sister-in-law Sarah Irene’s place. She is selling a lot of my brother Albert’s farm equipment and downsizing in her house. We never thought Albert’s life would be over so soon. May 22 will be a year since he lost his eight-week battle with colon cancer. Having lost three siblings all at young ages really makes you appreciate every day God gives you. Rest in peace, dear brothers and sisters. May we all meet again someday. We are enjoying our first meals of asparagus. Rhubarb also is out there, ready and waiting for me to make a rhubarb custard pie. I want to can rhubarb juice in the next few weeks. Homemade asparagus soup (Lovina's Amish Kitchen) Combine the broth, potatoes, onions and salt in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Add the asparagus and cook for 10 more minutes. Whisk the milk and flour together well in a small bowl, then whisk into soup. Stir in the cheese until melted. Can be served immediately or cooled and refrigerated to eat later. If desired, garnish with crumbled bacon. May 03, 2025 at 12:00 pm CDTThe Kankakee County NAACP Youth Council held elections Monday to appoint its new leadership team. This is a pivotal step in the council’s revitalization efforts after its relaunch earlier this year. The council’s renewal has been led by youth adviser Veronica Irish, alongside dedicated co-advisers Frances Noble, Sheree McDaye-Harwell and Nikeda Webb. Together, they have worked to reestablish a foundation focused on empowering youth. Open to individuals ages 10 to 20, the youth council is committed to fostering leadership development, encouraging civic engagement and promoting community service. With its newly elected officers, the council wants to expand its impact and deepen youth involvement throughout Kankakee County. Ongoing meetings and programming will continue to provide young leaders with opportunities to contribute to positive change in their communities. Matt’s going to go down and he understands. And he’s going to go down and bust his tail to be the player he knows he is and we know he is.” The Cubs handed Shaw the keys to third base this spring after parting ways with every other player who started at that position for the team in ‘24. Chicago pursued free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman this spring, but stuck with Shaw as the top choice after the star inked a deal with the Red Sox. Not only did Shaw have to deal with those Bregman rumors, but an oblique setback in Spring Training led to a quick ramp to Opening Day. There was also the trip overseas for the Tokyo Series against the Dodgers, plus a challenging schedule in multiple regards over the past month. “He was definitely thrown into the fire,” Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner said. “And it's not that he's not able to handle that or anything, but he definitely got a real glimpse at what the league has to offer, as far as the quality of arms he faced, playing in the cold and the travel. No excuses, but it was a lot. “This is just another opportunity to learn from experience. There's never going to be any questions on our end about, like, is he working hard? Does he care? He's a guy that's very upbeat.” May 03, 2025 at 12:00 pm CDTThe next meeting of the Hilltop Gardeners Garden Club will be held on Thursday, May 8, at the Oswego Public Library located at 32 West Jefferson Street in downtown Oswego. ExpandSterling pitcher Eli Penne throws a pitch against Alleman in a game on April 30 STERLING – Despite going without a real hit until the seventh inning, Sterling nearly pulled out a win against Alleman The Golden Warriors had the tying run at third with two outs but the game ended on a flyout as Sterling fell 5-4 in Western Big 6 Conference action Wednesday at a rainy Gartner Park 5-5 Big 6) scored four runs in the top of the seventh as conditions worsened as the game went on 2-8) scored twice in the bottom half before Drew Nettleton flew out to left to end it It was an exciting finish to a game that was mostly a pitchers’ duel for six innings Sterling’s Eli Penne allowed only an unearned run in the first inning until the Pioneers got to him in the seventh “I thought Eli pitched extremely well,” Sterling coach Darwin Nettleton said “I thought defensively we played really well.” But the Warriors could not do much against Alleman’s Truman Marner until an infield pop-up found the turf without a Pioneer calling for it in the fifth inning Sterling took a 2-1 lead on two Alleman errors grabbing the momentum after only reaching base with two walks and an error to that point Alleman pulled ahead in the seventh with a Jackson Smith two-run single after a hit batter and a walk Alleman’s Gavin Awbrey extended the lead with a two-run double Awbrey closed the game after Marner struck out four with two walks “I came in in a tough situation and I knew I had to get the job done,” Awbrey said but I ended up figuring it out and getting it done.” Sterling’s Adrian Monarrez led off the bottom of the seventh with a double striking out Landon Kukowski before the final flyout “It was definitely tough to play in [the rain] both teams had to play in the same conditions,” Awbrey said “Luckily we came out on top and did our jobs.” The Pioneers swept Sterling after winning 4-1 on Monday Sterling heads to Quincy on Monday before hosting the Blue Devils on Wednesday Coach Nettleton is looking for improved approaches at the plate and better finishes to games Sterling currently sits in last in the conference it’s really hard to be creative offensively but the results just haven’t gone the Warriors’ way “We’ve just got to get over the hump,” he said and can we grow from that and be better come inning four but [still] figuring out how to close games.” continues through August Though the offense has done a remarkable job and is striking fear into the heart of every pitcher it faces there is one massive hole which the team hoped it would solve with their top prospect Matt Shaw earned the Opening Day job at third base both because of a crippling need there and due to the Cubs believing he was ready following a huge season in the minor leagues Things did not go well over the first 18 games of the year for the youngster, slashing .172/.294/.241 before Chicago elected to option him back down to Triple-A it's been a revolving door at the hot corner for the Cubs and they have now started six different players at the position in at least one game For a lineup which has been the best in baseball Chicago is dealing with a black hole at third base right now which could potentially limit what kind of ceiling they have as a unit The plan for now seems to be waiting for Shaw to figure it out in Iowa before bringing him back up and handing him the job back with hopeful serious improvement at the plate Though some insiders doubt this is actually the strategy and thinks the Cubs are actively trying to make an upgrade patience could be starting to pay off with Shaw Upon first getting sent down, Shaw's hitting struggles continued over his first several games and got even worse, but he has completely turned it around since then Shaw has slashed .324/.457/.486 with 12 hits and eight walks Perhaps most impressive and encouraging is the fact that after struggling with contact in the big leagues the 23-year-old has struck out just three times Chicago is not going to bring Shaw back up after just two weeks but it's not out of the realm of possibility to think he could return to the Cubs within the next month or so The goal in sending him down was always to simply let him apply what he had learned from three weeks in the big leagues and tune some things up in Iowa If Shaw can keep hitting the way he has over the last week he certainly could be back in the Major Leagues before the time the dog days of summer roll around Chicago has a desperate need at third and Shaw is by far the most ideal solution if he can hold up You were focused on pitching as 41 percent of you said “starting pitching” and another 36 percent said “relief pitching.” Here’s the part where we listen to music and talk movies We’re coming to the end of Jazz Appreciation Month with International Jazz Day on April 30 we’re featuring the Branford Marsalis Quartet playing “Spiral Dance” just last month Safe in Hell is the kind of salacious (by the standards of 1931) potboiler that you want in a Pre-Code film Wellman and starring Dorothy Mackaill and Donald Cook it’s the story of a prostitute who goes into hiding after killing a man who tried to rape her a prostitute in New Orleans who gets a call from her madam to visit a man in his apartment while his wife is out of town It turns out that the man who requested her is the man who got her fired from her office job after she refused his advances That also got her blackballed from all legitimate businesses leaving her with no other option to support herself other than prostitution this time throwing a small statue at his head Gilda gets a call from her madam that she actually killed Piet with that statue toss and that the police are coming for her her sailor boyfriend Carl (Cook) returns and she has to explain the whole story to him While he’s sickened that she’s been working as a prostitute he decides he still loves her and smuggles her out the fire escape as the police close in Carl knows of an island in the Caribbean that has no extradition treaty with the US so it is where criminals on the run head to avoid the law Carl gets Gilda set up at a hotel on this island and then heads back to his sailing job they have a “marriage ceremony” at an empty church and Gilda promises to stay true to Carl while he’s gone the hotel is crawling with disreputable men who want nothing more than to have sex with “the only white woman on the island.” (Their words Gilda has now decided to go “good,” as she puts it and stay true to her “husband” after their unofficial marriage She’s also stuck on this rundown island with little money and unsavory men trying to coerce her into sex as there are a couple of twists that upend the plot Safe in Hell doesn’t have the typical Hollywood ending either I doubt any film today would go with the ending Safe in Hell goes to because it would test poorly with audiences although it’s a kind of melodramatic acting style that has been out of fashion for about seventy years or so Safe in Hell also features two prominent Black actors in Nina Mae McKinney and Clarence Muse as the hotel owner and the hotel porter respectively McKinney’s Leonie is a smart business woman (also from New Orleans) who is maybe the only one who shows any kindness to Gilda Both Black characters are portrayed positively and intelligently which Neither one speaks in a “Negro dialect” either although Wikipedia tells me that the script was written for them that way Credit to Wellman for letting McKinney and Muse transcend the stereotypes of Black actors that most of Hollywood insisted upon at the time McKinney is especially good as the main supporting actress in the film and even gets to belt out a jazz tune “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South,” which is certainly a highlight of the film Safe in Hell is exactly the type of film that would lead to the Production Code finally getting enforced in 1934 she shows a lot of skin (although nothing you couldn’t show on network television and no one would complain) and all of the despicable men in the film escape without punishment It was this type of “scandalous” film that drove moviegoers into theaters in 1931 and outraged those who felt it was their job to enforce morality on society Safe in Hell is a classic of this kind of pre-code melodrama so if you are interested in that period of Hollywood which was also directed by Wellman and also came out in 1931 That film has a superior cast (Barbara Stanwyck Joan Blondell and a pre-mustached Clark Gable) and more humor But Safe in Hell is pretty good and has recently gotten a much-needed restoration which you can watch on the Max streaming service Here’s the scene where Gilda and Carl first arrive at the hotel on the island Welcome back to everyone who skips the music and movies he really hasn’t played much third base in his career That was only his 21st major league game at third base and he only played 23 in the minors But Bruján was forced into the role as the Cubs are short at the position since Matt Shaw got sent down to the minor leagues after his rough start to what we assume is his rookie season Jon Berti is the only real third baseman on the roster if you assume (correctly in my and everyone else’s opinion) that a 40-year-old Justin Turner should only play there in an emergency Shaw got off to a terrible start in Iowa after his demotion going 4 for 9 with a double and a home run over his past two the Cubs put a lot of faith in Shaw to be their third baseman this year and that gamble has not They didn’t sign free agent Alex Bregman over the winter and while I don’t know if it was a realistic option considering it’s the Cardinals Louis was seemingly offering Nolan Arenado to anyone willing to assume his contract I know a lot of you would say that the Cubs didn’t pursue either option because owner Tom Ricketts is cheap and I wouldn’t say that you’re completely wrong if you said that But I think the bigger reason why the Cubs didn’t go after a veteran third baseman was the front office’s faith in Matt Shaw If you believe that Matt Shaw is going to be a star you don’t want a high-priced veteran sitting on the one open infield position for the next few seasons So tonight’s question is “How much faith to you still have in Matt Shaw?” To be clear there are a lot of players who struggled in their first exposure to the majors and went on to have great careers You may remember how poorly Anthony Rizzo did in San Diego before he was traded to the Cubs Or that the Cubs sent Ian Happ down to the minors for three months in 2019 (I know that Happ hasn’t forgotten that.) Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong struggled in their first exposure to the majors and now both look like potential All-Stars So l am asking you how confident, on a scale of 1 to 5, are you that Matt Shaw will be back in the major leagues this year and that he will be good enough to be the starting third baseman on a pennant contender. The Cubs goal this year should certainly be to make the World Series this year with the start that they are off to Do you think they can do that with Matt Shaw at third If you are still extremely confident that Shaw will be back at third base by the time summer rolls around vote “5.” If you’re pretty sure that the Cubs third baseman this year will be Jon Berti (or Shaw’s fellow prospect Jonny Long I suppose) until the trade deadline when the Cubs make a trade for a veteran third baseman vote “3.” You can figure out what a “2” or a “4” vote means from there Thank you so much for stopping by this evening And join us again tomorrow night for more BCB After Dark ExpandProtesters gathered Saturday and lined the 100 block of North Main Street in Princeton to express their opposition to current U.S domestic policy and the separation of powers being tested by the White House About 40 protesters gathered Saturday and lined the 100 block of North Main Street in Princeton to express their opposition to current U.S Saturday’s demonstration was the fourth one organized by the Bureau County Democratic Party, which to date had aligned its local demonstrations with national protests. “Mostly people are fearful of losing our democracy,” said Rick Wilkin, party chairman. “People are coming out to say, ‘I am not willing to go quietly into the night and have democracy ripped out from underneath me.’” Tom Jackson of Princeton organized the protests and prepared food to fortify the protesters before they line the streets. “I think we’ve seen a significant increase in participation and interest with our organization and looking for some change within the county and nationally, particularly right now,” Jackson said. Deb Swenson of Princeton said she thinks opinion may be shifting in their favor, noting an increase in the number of passersby who’ve demonstrated support for the protesters. “It’s been surprisingly positive,” Swenson said. “We’ve mostly had people honking or giving thumbs up.” While the signage raised indicated disparate objections – policy toward Ukraine versus domestic policy, for example – Mary Ann Smith of Princeton said the group is united in its belief the current administration has lost sight of its mission to serve the greater good. “We have to turn our country around from the MAGA and get back to our roots, which are compassionate and logical,” Smith said. “We have a government that functions to serve the people and not to serve one person.” More dates are anticipated, though dates are pending.
