Bellezza wins the Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack an order that remained unchanged through six furlongs in 1:18.87 and a mile in 1:43.83 She behaved like a nice filly and worked good," said Clement's assistant Christophe Lorieul (Rodriguez) stuck to the rail and had a great trip she stuck out her neck and went all the way through The Sheepshead also is the first graded win for Rodriguez Sign up for BloodHorse Daily Bellezza won her first stakes last year in the Diamond Stakes at Dundalk She now has a 3-2-1 record from eight career starts and earnings of $159,122 Chan today issued a forceful statement opposing the City’s decision to place a homeless shelter in the middle of Sheepshead Bay calling the move a direct assault that endangers the integrity of our hardworking family neighborhoods “The City’s Administration wants to put a homeless shelter in the middle of our neighborhoods Is it any wonder why the people of Sheepshead Bay are furious Is it any wonder why families who worked their whole lives to build a safe and stable community for their children to live in are now saying enough is enough,” blasted New York State Senator Chan New York State Senator Chan represents parts of Brooklyn and vehemently criticized the New York City Mayor's latest move placing homeless shelters in residential family neighborhoods The mayor’s priorities are completely out of touch with Brooklyn residents Reckless riders fly down sidewalks on scooters Nothing to stop those who continue to break the law he prioritizes dropping a homeless shelter in our neighborhood where law-abiding residents live These are good people who play by the rules and the mayor has decided that these are the people he is going to arrest                          Continued Senator Chan Senator Chan reaffirmed his commitment to stand with the Brooklyn community and fight against the homeless shelter plan using every legal and legislative option available Homeless shelters don’t belong in our residential neighborhoods We will not let this city punish the people who built it We are going to defend our community at whatever costs,”                          Concluded Senator Chan The Senator’s office is currently reviewing all legal and procedural actions to block the shelter and ensure that community voices are heard Police arrested two people and issued summonses during a protest of a homeless shelter plan in Sheepshead Bay during the evening hours of April 30 police arrested two women protesting outside the site at 2134 Coyle Street was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment disorderly conduct-violent behavior and disorderly conduct-obstructing traffic was charged with second-degree assault and menacing a police officer Cops also said that five others were issued summonses The proposal is to build a shelter for 169 men but the number of people and the charges weren’t reported Some elected officials were upset with how police handled the protestors and demanded answers next to schools and day care centers,” said State Sen Is it any wonder why families who worked their whole lives to build a safe and stable community for their children to live in are now saying According to a letter written to the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) by Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse the original plan for the site was for mixed-use affordable housing “With demolition poised to begin while the site’s affordable-housing plan remains unresolved the Department of Buildings must verify that every permit and safety measure is fully in place and that no work proceeds beyond demolition without new approvals,” she said “Our seniors and other neighbors stationed outside the site deserve strong protection and our community will not accept shortcuts that put lives at risk.” “Today’s protest in Sheepshead Bay is another example of the city using taxpayer resources to coerce minority New Yorkers into submission,” said Councilmember Susan Zhuang the community is upset and feels as if no one in Government is listening to them How is this going to build trust with the people who are victims of a city government that will not consider their voice?” Protestors continue to stand outside the site holding signs that read “No Homeless Shelters.” The presence is similar to the protests that have been held at a Gravesend site “Homeless shelters don’t belong in our residential neighborhoods We are going to defend our community at whatever cost.” the Department of Social Services released a statement.  “While these protestors have every right to publicly express their views and opinions they must do so peacefully and in a manner which complies with the law,” a spokesperson said “In accordance with a recently issued court order the developer is allowed to enter the property free of any impediments to access We will continue to maintain open lines of communication with all stakeholders and elected officials from the area in order to keep them apprised of the status of this project.” EMAIL: CANARSIEC@AOL.COM By Loretta Chin A talented group of wood carvers have been meeting and creating beautiful works of art at the United Methodist Church of Sheepshead Bay at 3087 Ocean Avenue since February and shared some of their latest creations with the Canarsie Courier on Saturday “Brooklyn Wood Carvers is the first club in Brooklyn,” main organizer of the group and longtime area resident Donald Quigley said Quigley starts new members off with a simple project He draws a flower on a small block of wood and instructs members on how to use the wood carving tools properly to make a relief carving which is the process of cutting into the design so that it appears to protrude from the wood but Quigley mainly uses wood from the linden tree called basswood which he purchases from a wholesaler in the Bronx “We have different people doing different things for the group,” Quigley said relief carvers and anybody who is working with wood in any way.” Many of the members were part of senior-focused community groups in Downtown Brooklyn who wanted to join the wood carving group Newcomers are helped by Quigley and their fellow wood carvers creating a sense of camaraderie and community “Wood carving activates the brain cells and makes you think,” he said of just one of the many benefits of wood carving  He noticed how people who came in with tension were more relaxed over time “We teach each other,” Gregory Anderson said He felt that wood carving was a dying art in the United States compared to Europe and what they were doing was keeping the art of wood carving alive He would like to see people recognize it more as a fine art Others spoke about the therapeutic aspects and satisfaction they get from wood carving In addition to the thought process and concentration needed to work on the various pieces that helps keep the mind sharp other benefits of wood carving were strengthening of fine motor skills the emotional and spiritual satisfaction of creating something personal for themselves or for others “It’s not cookie cutter and people are allowed to have personal expression,” Laurella Sapp said “Even though the common material is the wood that they are working with that gets transformed into the manifestation of each person’s personality and that’s what you see.” The group has been steadily growing since it started about three months ago and currently has 17 members who meet on the first third and fifth Saturdays of the month; they pay $20 dues for four months to cover costs of tools Quigley says that some will sell or show their work but most will keep them as a labor of love for themselves or as gifts which is Sheepshead Bay’s oldest standing church It was built warm summer’s night back when Frederick William Irving Lundy’s namesake restaurant was the talk of South Brooklyn openly pouring booze in the face of Prohibition Everyone knocking back bootleg hooch and wolfing their buck-fifty lobsters and twenty-cent slabs of huckleberry pie Lundy’s would have many more heydays in the nearly 90 years to follow after the first Lundy’s building was condemned and a second was built—a monster with room for some 2,800 guests—the restaurant was said to be the largest in the nation after Lundy had spent years buying up literally every property along the waterfront this stretch of Emmons was a South Brooklyn destination frequented for its retro feel settled into their seats at Lundy’s for a second date and last year Sandra launched a project of her own signing a lease on the former Rocky Sullivan’s space on Beard Street Soon afterward the couple were chatting about their new still-unnamed place with a guy named Frank Cretella “We told him we’d love to have one of those simple traditional Brooklyn establishments where you know what you’re getting when you walk in the door Cretella was the keeper of the Lundy’s name “He told me ‘You should take it Lundy’s of Red Hook—the official name is Lundy Bros, but no one calls it that—opened in December and it’s being billed as a “reincarnation” rather than because although the space oozes old-school charm and can accommodate an impressive 100 or so guests in the cozy back dining room (complete with working fireplace) and in the more casual bar area up front (which is basically Rocky’s minus those barrels and includes a stage for live music) there’s no way you could replicate the cavernous This isn’t a Lundy’s theme park It’s also not a restaurant you go to for Instagram content or clout There’s a neighborly warmth to the night’s proceedings who exudes good cheer delivered in a delicious Brooklyn accent “The people that walk in are desperate to tell their Lundy’s stories,” she told us “I’ve had it six times tonight in the dining room is to go around memory-collecting from the guests That’s what I love most about this gig.”  and he doesn’t do anything too cheffy with the tight roster of American surf-and-turf classics Some of the best stuff is from old Sheepshead Bay Lundy’s recipes like the clam “bisque” thick with potatoes not me—understands why it’s not called chowder But whatever; it’s creamy and briny and salty and just needs about five to ten seconds with the black pepper shaker on your table A basket of Lundy’s famous biscuits arrives unbidden a nice touch in this era of $12 “bread service,” and the deviled eggs piled high with crab meat make for a seriously decadent snack But if you’re only getting one starter or want something substantial to munch on at the bar the move is the Rhode Island style calamari lightly fried squid drenched in a peppy butter and red chili sauce Other surfy dishes include three or four catches of the day mostly from East Coast fishing boats—my piece of fluke was a total butter and caper party and I mean that in the best possible way—as well as a market-priced grilled or broiled lobster and it reminded me how much I enjoy lobster when it’s served as simply as this Turf entree options include a pork chop milanese a throwback roasted chicken from the OG Lundy recipe files If you don’t get the burger-and-fries get the side of roasted potatoes with caramelized onions and a generous dollop of sour cream The creamed spinach also does its job well Dessert is an important part of the experience here and though I was tempted by the butterscotch sundae journalistic duty required an order of Lundy’s famous huckleberry pie instead and tangy—the secret-ingredient blueberries tone some of the tartness down—and though it promises to serve two and most of the bottles of wine hover around $45 to $55 when deep Red Hook feels especially remote the crowd seems to be mostly locals and old Lundy heads paying their respect “I had no lifelong dream of being a restaurateur,” said Sandra came together organically so we’re giving it a go here in this little corner of Brooklyn but it’s the same spirit.”     Lundy’s is located at 44 Beard Street and is currently open on Wednesday through Monday from 5:00 p.m a backyard terrace situation will enter the picture and preschool receptionist in New York City As the joyous festival of Pesach approached a quiet revolution was underway in Sheepshead Bay—a project that combined deep organization The grassroots initiative Lamternshtik partnered with Chabad of Sheepshead Bay to lead this year’s Mivtza Matzah campaign in unprecedented fashion Their efforts enabled hundreds of Crown Heights residents—many of whom never before had the practical opportunity—to take part in the Rebbe’s mivtzoim directed by Rabbi Schwartz and his dedicated team was founded with a clear mission: to empower locals who are eager to join the Rebbe’s outreach work but lacked the infrastructure to do so their partnership with Chabad of Sheepshead Bay allowed that vision to come alive With over 5,700 boxes of Shmurah Matzah—each containing three matzos—distributed throughout the Sheepshead Bay community providing them with the “bread of faith” and a direct connection to their heritage This number represents an unprecedented milestone surpassing last year’s already impressive 4,200-box effort by a staggering 1,500 packages Every aspect of the campaign was meticulously planned Lamternshtik took on the logistical load—from compiling detailed delivery lists Each bag included clear instructions on how to fulfill the mitzvah of eating matzah as well as sale of Chometz forms and Pesach guides ensuring each recipient had the tools they needed for a meaningful Pesach experience “Lamternshtik made it possible for our family to have a very productive and seamless Mivtzoim experience in honor of Yud Aleph Nissan this year,” shared Dovid O. who led a group of ten families on the Sheepshead Bay routes The reactions from recipients spoke volumes “Thank you so very much for the lovely Shmurah matzah left at my doorstep,” wrote Ronna one of the many touched by the heartfelt delivery another volunteer shared: One lady was very excited and she printed me a matzah cake recipe Volunteers themselves were equally inspired A student from Beis Rivkah’s Sem Beis shared: “This year’s Mivtza Matzah was incredibly organized When I heard about how many matzos were being given out—5,700 boxes!—and how Lamternshtik worked in partnership with Chabad of Sheepshead Bay it made us feel like we were part of something huge We hope to expand to other neighborhoods next year by working hand-in-hand with the local shluchim Our group personally gave out over 200 matzos and even connected them with mezuzah resources ‘This is for me?!’ Her face lit up—it was a moment of true connection.” A Word of Gratitude and Vision for the Future The incredible success of this year’s Mivtza Matzah is thanks in no small part to the tireless work of Rabbi Schwartz and his team who coordinated every detail with care and clarity Their dedication ensured that hundreds of Crown Heights residents could become shluchim themselves – another leader of one of the groups put it:It was a really special opportunity to be part of Mivtza Matzah Once I reached out to Rabbi Yankel Katzman all the planning was taken care of from A to Z – the matzahs were packed It was such a smooth process and a huge relief having everything planned out when dealing with a large group going on Mivtzoim The girls had a great time knocking on doors and explaining all about Matzah and Pesach They felt so empowered and proud to have been part of this meaningful shlichus A special thanks is due Rabbi Elisha Cherniak for significantly helping out in the funding of the project. As well as to the team led by Yanky Malov and Shneur Rosenberg for leading all the organization on the ground as well as Yisrolik Davidzun for directing and organizing all the routes plans are already in motion to expand the initiative to other areas of Brooklyn in the coming years by coordinating closely with local shluchim Because when each Yid receives a matzah with warmth and sincerity it’s not just a mitzvah—it’s a step closer to preparing the world for Moshiach
