a.m The company conducts the annual maintenance program of its water distribution system to continue to provide customers with high-quality it gives an opportunity for the company to make sure its fire hydrants are operational.  Indiana American Water is responsible for nearly 32,000 fire hydrants in its 50-plus communities across the state “Flushing our system helps to clean out any build-up of mineral deposits and sediment inside the pipes These deposits can occur when there is a reduced water demand,” said Kari Britto Indiana American Water.  “We also flush our hydrants to confirm they the excitement of the first home meet as Shelbyville runners tried to stay warm in blankets wrapped over black and gray warm-ups But the mood seemed to lighten as the hours wore on and the sun slipped through the clouds Those watching shot put slipped hands in their pockets to avoid the cold Shelbyville athletes lined up along the track to cheer on their teammates screaming "You're almost there," "Keep it moving" and "One more." After runners crossed the line teammates doled out high-fives and fist bumps Even poor races were laughingly celebrated one runner asked their teammate: Where did it all go wrong Coach Nick Blakey was seemingly everywhere: taking photos by the starting blocks yelling for runners to gather for their races by the timers' truck IHSAA track and field: 20 athletes to watch as outdoor season kicks off IHSAA track and field: 16 underclassmen to watch this spring But it wasn't too different from a typical day at the track for Blakey who obsesses over his teams' workouts and times on top of his work as a software developer we don't have all the resources that some other schools have The reason why our program is successful is because we have you as part of it.' What I bring to the table is I obsess over this He programs athletes' times into Google Sheets so they can see how they're doing He hops into workouts and competes with the athletes He conducted a self-audit recently and discovered when he also coached cross-country he was coaching 46 out of 52 weeks of the year And the passion has paid off over 11 seasons Though Shelbyville Central Schools' student population has declined in recent years Now there are 85 — more than 7% of Shelbyville's student population of 1,097 In a time where youth sports are becoming more serious and taking up families' money and time Blakey's Shelbyville program is an oasis of sorts and Shelbyville athletes know how to strike the balance between when to lighten up and when to be serious He learned the lesson himself when running alongside and cheering for a teammate during the 4x400 relay at a meet — not realizing doing so was against the rules Blakey reflects on how he can make practice fun for his athletes he said runners might do three reps and spend the rest of practice talking and hanging out with friends The loudspeakers blast music like Kendrick Lamar's "Humble" and "Swimming Pools" to try to get athletes to dance He also runs offseason sprint cycles in the winter and summer and a smaller That small program is one of junior Diana Gasca's favorite parts of competing for Shelbyville Every Friday after their most difficult practice the group tries different food together — Panda Express When she saw an assistant middle school coach position open last year I want to do that for the middle schoolers Lux appreciated Blakey didn't run them into the ground and she felt like she was running on full battery She brings the same approach to the middle-schoolers modifying Blakey's workouts and teaching fundamentals — along with hosting game days Streamlining the middle and high school track programs also helped Many Shelbyville high school runners started at the middle school first understanding what Blakey's program was like there 'My biggest thing for middle school track is I want the kids to know that you love them that you care about them and that you made their day better by having them at practice,'" Blakey said "I literally will lose sleep if I feel like any one of those things went wrong because that's how much I care about going to practice I want to make sure that's the best part of their day Several Shelbyville runners said Blakey's caring attitude sets the program apart When senior Christian Powell has a bad workout "This week I had a bad workout and I felt kind of lost like I wasn't performing as well as I should've," Powell said "But he was letting me know things were going to be okay and giving me advice for solutions to things I'm going through." But Shelbyville athletes said the trust level is greater because Blakey still competes Blakey has traveled as far as New York and California for national master's meets The practice's difficulty had runners sprawled out on the football field grass when it ended Zermeno is part of what Blakey called Shelbyville's "hype men," an unofficial group of seniors who spread the word about the track program "If he thinks there's a 1% chance that they'll come out and run he'll spend time talking to them," Blakey said It took Zermeno a moment to estimate how many runners he'd recruited while in high school he said — only recruiting four or five athletes Zermeno heard four talented athletes were cut from the girls tennis team and he saw an opportunity Two of them ended up being among Shelbyville's top sprinters she said he helped her and has made the team more encouraging along with Powell Track and field athletes talk about the sport "all the time time" at school "It's always good stuff," the teacher said Shelbyville's welcoming culture is perhaps the biggest draw lessons about work ethic and determination keep athletes coming back "Then they find out they're improving and getting better They see that growth and feel that hard work." Powell called the 400 the "hardest race" he's ever competed in He remembered feeling poorly going into the 4x400 relay at a meet last season and recorded his best split ever Moments like that have taught him the importance of motivation and hard work But they're just one factor among many keeping athletes coming back to Shelbyville's track High-fiving friends after workouts and races The positivity felt throughout the program starting with Blakey's pep talks and dad jokes "This sport has definitely changed my life for the better," Powell said "I actually don't know where I would be without this sport I don't even know where I would be without Blakey I wouldn't be as motivated to do practices He's the center of all the growth that I've gotten these past four years."
