Moreno-Sherwood stepped into her role as Director of the Broadening Opportunity through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) Center in 2022 she brought with her not only a strong variety of experiences in higher education but a personal understanding of what it means to navigate college as a first-generation student in STEM she’s being recognized across the entire University of Colorado system for her unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion Moreno-Sherwood is the recipient of the 2025 President’s Inclusive Excellence Award one of the university’s highest honors for individuals who go above and beyond to build inclusive and empowering communities The annual awards celebrate those who have made significant contributions to removing barriers and embedding inclusivity into the CU community dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science said Moreno-Sherwood’s unwavering commitment has profoundly impacted the college community “Amy’s leadership of the BOLD Center has elevated efforts to support engineering students of all backgrounds,” Molenaar said “Amy’s dedication and innovative approach are truly inspiring Her recognition with the President’s Inclusive Excellence Award is a testament to her exceptional contributions.” Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Moreno-Sherwood has called CU Boulder home since 2010, holding a variety of student-facing and leadership roles across campus before joining the College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2019 She earned degrees in Animal Science and Cultural Anthropology from Iowa State University along with a master’s in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and also holds a graduate certificate in Engineering Leadership and Management from CU Boulder Moreno-Sherwood’s leadership of the BOLD Center has elevated efforts to support engineering students from historically marginalized backgrounds the BOLD Center supports CU Engineering students to thrive personally and academically while preparing them to lead in an increasingly interconnected world she leads the kind of program that helped shape her own journey in STEM We sat down with Amy to talk about how her personal journey informs her leadership what drives her work and why inclusion is more than a goal My parents were working class and childcare wasn’t always accessible but we were given the space to explore the world around us nature and how things worked and I carried that with me I was also the first in my immediate family to go to college My mom got her GED and I remember being inspired by the teachers who believed in me I always knew education could be life-changing I ended up going to a research university not far from home though I’d never set foot on the campus before I was part of a multicultural scholars program and paired with a mentor I’m still in touch with today Being in that program and studying science just soaking up everything I could about the natural world opened my eyes to how education could transform not only my life “have you thought about working with students?” And that was the spark I originally thought I’d become a secondary education teacher but I kept coming back to higher education It was a space where I could make an impact helping others navigate access and gain opportunities it impacts people and never feels complete  Amy’s willingness to share and support colleagues in inclusive excellence is so impactful to our collective growth in this area I personally have learned much from her.”  “how can I improve the places and communities I’m a part of?” It takes intention There are moments where you have to decenter yourself really consider others’ perspectives and experiences and that’s not always easy with the volume of work that there is to do Sometimes the right or supportive thing is also the most uncomfortable or difficult thing That’s why it’s so important to stay rooted in your values and keep going I’ve had the privilege of working with many students What keeps me going is that connection to their stories and dreams When I reflect on my own college experience I didn’t know I was first-generation until someone told me I didn’t know I was navigating systems that weren’t built for me until I was in them when I see students who show up at the BOLD Center with all the potential in the world I want to make sure we’re creating an environment where they can thrive  Amy’s ability to foster community and create pathways for underrepresented voices to thrive is remarkable Her contributions have not only enriched the CU Boulder community but have also inspired others to take actionable steps toward building a more inclusive environment.” assistant dean for access & community Engagement It’s easy to retreat or second-guess yourself when you’re navigating difficult decisions process challenges with and stay rooted with Patricia Gonzalez over at the College of Arts & Sciences to launch our Justice Diversity & Inclusion Leaders Community of Practice We wanted a space where people leading this work could come together and feel supported our tagline remains: “you’ll always have a seat at our table.” Because there are times when you won’t be invited into certain spaces Be able to communicate your values clearly and consistently inspire authenticity and foster greater understanding I am very grateful for the community in the BOLD Center and the college for validating the impacts and importance of our staff and faculty representing our students I am cognizant of my background and positionality as a leader in our college My hope is to inspire our students and staff to see themselves in leadership positions and work to achieve even greater success Positive representation can also shift public opinion foster greater understanding between different cultures and communities and affect resources I want to ensure that the needs and perspectives of our community are reflected so that we can have more effective services So many of our students are driven by a desire to solve problems they’ve experienced firsthand—lack of access they need an environment that recognizes their experiences Engineering impacts every corner of our world And the best solutions are built when diverse voices and perspectives are at the table you need spaces where people feel like they matter where their ideas are welcomed and where they can develop the skills to collaborate across differences it is critical to understand that it is not truly excellent unless it is inclusive It’s been just over three years in this role and five with the college—it’s a joy I think back to my own journey: setting foot on campus for the first time not fully knowing what a major consisted of or what careers were even possible Our students are coming in with different backgrounds we’re focused on helping students feel seen removing barriers and making sure people know they matter We want students to graduate not just with degrees but with a strong sense of self and community It’s been so rewarding to see how the Center has grown into a place of connection and innovation The work our students are doing: it’s going to change lives and impact the world  I can’t imagine my time at CU being the same without Amy’s guidance She helped me navigate some difficult times in life and I want to thank her for being a huge part of that." I want them to leave knowing: This place saw me I hope they feel a stronger sense of who they are and what they’re capable of That there’s a community behind them—cheering them on celebrating their wins and showing up in tough times That sense of belonging can make all the difference they go on to shape the world in amazing ways And I’m honored to be even a small part of that journey I want to start with our staff and students at the BOLD Center who show up every day with authenticity They generate hope and that hope is essential for this work supporting peers or sharing their stories with industry partners they’re showing what inclusive excellence looks like in action You could name any one of them for their dedication to students the relationships they build and the collaborations they spark I’m also incredibly grateful to our college leadership for being willing to innovate and invest in this important work It takes people in key places to say yes to new ideas and push for change we’ve all worked hard to build something meaningful Innovation and impact speak directly to the work we’ve been doing And the recognition tells us we’re on the right track It reminds us that inclusive excellence isn’t just a value statement It’s about recognizing that people come in with different circumstances and that we have a responsibility to make sure everyone has a fair chance to thrive and succeed we want to make sure that our organization and students are really set up for success by having all the resources we need to be sustainable We are constantly enhancing our programming scholarships and services that we’re offering for our students I’m really excited knowing that we are a pivotal piece of student success not only for our college I expect some big things to come in the future                     Phone: 303-492-5071 Email: cueng@colorado.edu University of Colorado Boulder PrivacyLegal & TrademarksCampus Map University of Colorado Boulder Data, defense, and AI software company Palantir is due to report results after the close of trading Monday, with the expectations priced into the shares — they’re flirting with record highs — implying a rock ’n’ roll result And for good reason. It would be about tariffs: whether companies saw a rush of activity from customers trying to beat the imposition of levies and how their outlooks had changed in light of the upheaval to trade — if they deigned to even offer an outlook at all had the potential to be a bit of a head-fake about a world that was no longer going to exist Companies that do well aren’t seeing their stocks soar perhaps because of that aforementioned line of thinking or because the solid results came along with underwhelming guidance “Companies which have beaten on both EPS and sales have outperformed the S&P 500 by 0.2ppt the following day well below the historical average of 1.5ppt — suggesting 1Q results matter less amid looming uncertainty over tariffs/the macro and the potential impact on the rest of the year,” wrote Savita Subramanian head of US equity and quantitative strategy at Bank of America “Misses have underperformed by 3.9ppt the subsequent day more than the historical average of 2.5ppt.” But that may be missing the forest for the trees here when it comes to telling another simple story about earnings season: it’s been really good earnings have surprised to the upside by a colossal amount profits per share have exceeded expectations by a whopping 9.3% among S&P 500 companies that have reported That’s the best in at least the past couple years, and contrasts wildly with what analysts had been doing in a frenzied fashion ahead of earnings season: chopping estimates more often than they had since Covid are exceeding expectations by much less than earnings What this tells us is that companies were great at managing margins (yet again!) maximizing their earnings for every dollar of sales This may become a challenge in the event that tariffs push input costs materially higher But markets are always (supposedly) forward-looking And what they seem to be looking forward to is a world where tariffs aren’t as high as traders would have feared a few short weeks ago and Corporate America is in a much better starting position than previously thought to grapple with whatever awaits (Chris Delmas/Getty Images)WASTEDGaming savior “GTA 6” just got pushed back to next year sending Take-Two stock plunging“Grand Theft Auto VI” was set to be the biggest release of 2025 Fans will have to wait a little longer to play the biggest game of the decade Take-Two Interactive on Friday morning announced that it’s delaying the release of “Grand Theft Auto VI” — a game expected to break $1 billion in preorder sales alone — from fall 2025 to May 26 Some researchers have forecast $3.2 billion sales for “GTA 6” in its first year — a figure that would roughly double 2024’s top box office performer “We need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” Take-Two’s label, Rockstar, said in a statement Expect competitor gaming studios to start rapidly announcing fall release dates; many were delaying or holding off on setting official dates in the chance they became overshadowed by the massive game More BusinessSee all BusinessMax KnoblauchBuilt Ford Rough4hFord suspends 2025 guidance expects a $1.5 billion tariff hit this yearThe automaker more insulated from tariffs than many rivals reported its first-quarter earnings on Monday Analysts at UBS have been looking at the performance of the big three cloud computing businesses: Google Cloud, Amazon’s AWS, and Microsoft’s Azure Azure is beating its rivals, showing a strong 66% sequential revenue growth in its Q1 earnings UBS thinks a combination of different factors could be at play: An increase in enterprise customers finally migrating to the cloud Migration of Microsoft legacy server customers to Azure Customers flocking to Azure’s “industry-leading” stack for AI services Partner OpenAI may have made a substantial Azure commitment The chunky shoe icon is leaving Wall Street after 26 years on the market United Airlines flights account for roughly three-quarters of the air traffic in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport Over the weekend, the carrier announced it’s cutting 35 round-trip Newark flights, or about 10% of its daily schedule at the airport. The volume of shipping containers forecast to arrive at the Port of Los Angeles is falling off a cliff Looking at the actual bookings for shipping containers coming from China to the US (known as twenty-foot equivalent units According to data from supply chain analytics firm Vizion bookings for China-to-US TEUs for the week of April 13 are down 44.5% from the same period last year Vizion’s report on the latest data underscored the speed and depth of the decline: “Between the week of March 24 and April 14 dropped from 134,911 to 81,239 TEUs — a sharp 39.9% decrease in just three weeks The decline highlights the severity of the market’s reaction to the April 4 and April 5 tariff announcements as shippers paused new movements mid-cycle to reassess cost Looking at both the shipping bookings and the volume of containers arriving at ports then pulled back sharply as new tariff policies introduced widespread uncertainty visible in booking data well before they appear at ports or in customs reports highlight the importance of early indicators in a rapidly changing trade environment.” Mark Zuckerberg at UFC 300 at T-Mobile Arena on April 13 in Las Vegas (Jeff Bottari/Getty disconnect between rising stocks and skittish volatility marketsThe S&P 500’s streak of seven straight sessions in the green while the front of the VIX futures curve stays inverted is the longest such run on record The raucous recovery in US stock markets has yet to be validated by volatility markets the signals being sent between these two asset classes have never conflicted for as long as they have recently The S&P 500 has gained for seven straight sessions the front of the VIX futures curve has remained inverted — that is the front-month future has been trading above the second-month future The front of the VIX futures curve has been in that term structure for the past 23 sessions suggesting (loosely) that the S&P 500 is expected to be more volatile over the coming month than the month after that which tracks the 30-day implied volatility of the S&P 500 using out-of-the-money options prices That’s because markets are usually going up and the time that we should be concerned about stocks falling is at some undetermined time in the future An inverted VIX curve is a signal that the time for worry is now a signal that the worst of the momentum breakdown and tariff-enhanced recession fears are in the rearview mirror the volatility markets are telling traders to stay on guard while the price action in the stock market is suggesting that worry is steadily melting away The seven consecutive sessions of the S&P 500 rising while the front of the VIX curve stays inverted is the longest such streak on record going back to the introduction of VIX futures in 2004 “Some like to anthropomorphize the VIX by referring to it as the fear index but what it really captures is the current health of the market,” said Dave Roberts an independent trader of volatility and vol products the inverted curve is still signaling we are in a bear market environment where stocks are susceptible to sharp drops.” The next-longest streak of this nature came in February 2018, after the blowup of two exchange-traded products that allowed traders to bet on market calm had a scarring effect on volatility markets that outlived the impact on the stock market A high VIX means stocks are being priced to move a lot — up or down pricing high implied volatility along with an inverted VIX curve has tended to coincide with markets going down (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)Tumbling into oblivion: This product is arguably the most uniquely screwed by the tariffs on ChinaStanley and Yeti’s distinctive insulated tumblers come from China Recently we took a deep dive into trade data, looking at what goods we imported almost exclusively from China One of the top categories of goods was described in the weird verbose language of international trade as: "VACUUM FLASKS AND OTHER VACUUM VESSELS COMPLETE WITH CASES; PARTS THEREOF OTHER THAN GLASS INNERS." Turns out that the US imported more than $1.6 billion worth of vacuum flasks and parts in 2024 and China supplied 96% of our imports of this category Basically this category covers metallic insulated bottles These happen to be really complicated things to make as you can see from this oddly fascinating video (do yourself a favor and turn the sound off):  One of the most successful companies in this category is Stanley. The privately owned, 112-year-old brand is probably most well known for a single product that became an unlikely hit and was even the target of a “Saturday Night Live” skit poking fun at the popular “big dumb cups.” Stanley even has its own official loyalty program featuring early access to new tumbler “drops,” with special perks for superfans who collect the most points Buyers can customize their Quencher Flowstate Tumblers with 32 different colors along with custom graphics and engraved monograms Ship manifest data from ImportYeti shows that in the past year PMI Worldwide — Stanley’s parent company — imported vacuum flasks via sea shipments mainly from suppliers in China with a smaller amount coming from Vietnam and Thailand While the company may have other suppliers delivering goods over land or via air shipping that would not show up in this data having such reliance on Chinese suppliers for its star product could cause some pain for the company A 40-ounce Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler (in Cornflower Gloss) sells for $45 on Stanley’s website If subjected to the full 145% tariff on Chinese imports a price that even Stanley die-hards might find hard to swallow Another company that may not be insulated from the effects of President Trump’s tariffs is Yeti In 2024, Yeti’s total revenue was $1.83 billion, and 60% of that (just over $1 billion) came from its drinkware line, most of which features mugs and tumblers with “kitchen-grade, 18/8 stainless-steel, double-wall vacuum insulation,” according to the company’s 2024 annual report The company said that it does not own any of its own manufacturing facilities, and that just two manufacturers made up 74% of its drinkware supply in 2024. ImportYeti data (no relation) also shows that the vast majority of Yeti’s sea shipments of vacuum flasks originated from China Yeti warned in its annual report about the significant negative impact higher tariffs could have on the business: “Tariffs have the potential to significantly raise the cost of our products there can be no assurance that we will be able to shift manufacturing and supply agreements to non-impacted countries The company also predicted that steep tariffs would eat away at profit margins:  we may suffer margin erosion or be required to raise our prices negatively impact our results of operations the imposition of tariffs on products that we export to international markets could make such products more expensive compared to those of our competitors if we pass related additional costs on to our customers which may also result in the loss of customers Yeti’s Rambler 64-ounce insulated water bottle in “key lime” sells for $65 on the company’s website If the full 145% tariffs were applied to this bottle Yeti and Stanley did not respond to a request for comment (Kevin Carter/Getty Images)Airbnb beats expectations but stock drops on US travel uncertaintyAirbnb said it has seen softness in demand for travel in the US but that was offset by international demand Short-term rental giant Airbnb is down more than 5% in after-hours trading as it cited “softer results” in the US despite reporting quarterly results that beat analysts’ estimates thanks to steady demand for international travel and more in-app booking Airbnb reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.25 compared to the $0.23 analysts polled by with the Street’s estimates and up from $22.9 billion in the same period last year Airbnb also reported some payoff for work it’s done improving its mobile app with a growing share of nights booked coming from the app The company said it saw strong demand for travel in Latin America the company saw “relatively softer results which we believe has been largely driven by broader economic uncertainties.” Airbnb said it expects to make between $2.99 billion and $3.05 billion in revenue in the second quarter of 2025 “By offering guests a wide range of listings around the world and providing hosts economic opportunity we believe our model can adapt to periods of consumer uncertainty,” the company said It also bought back $807 million in shares in the first quarter leaving $2.5 billion remaining under its $6 billion repurchase authorization Airbnb’s peer, Booking Holdings also reported results on Wednesday that solidly topped analysts estimates but still saw its shares decline as investors worry about what the macro environment could mean for travel for the rest of the year Confirmation that China is open to trade talks with the US along with better-than-expected US Combined with a rosy earnings from hyperscaler Microsoft, the capex announcement also sent AI stocks higher is not just “additional data center investments to support our AI efforts,” but also “an increase in the expected cost of infrastructure hardware.” Li wouldn’t break down what portion of the growth was coming from expansion versus higher costs “The higher costs we expect to incur for infrastructure hardware this year really comes from suppliers who source from countries around the world And there’s just a lot of uncertainty around this And so that is both reflected in the wider range that we are giving And we’re also working on our end on mitigations by optimizing our supply chain And our outlook is really trying to reflect our best understanding of the potential impact this year across all of that uncertainty.” tariffs are going to make building AI infrastructure more expensive since many of the parts and equipment are sourced from places like China cofounder and CEO of Spotify (Presley Ann/Getty Images)Profits tripled and record Q1 free cash flow — so why is Spotify sinking?Spotify’s earnings had a lot to like but near-term “noise” might be dampening investors’ appetite for the music streaming stock This morning, Spotify reported that it had 678 million monthly active users at the end of Q1 making 1 in 12 people on earth a user of the green streaming machine Paid subscribers to the music platform also rose 12% to some 268 million helping drive the company’s operating profit to €509 million — more than triple the figure notched in the same quarter a year ago as the company’s continued focus on profitability nearly makes up for years of consistent losses Spotify’s stock is down sharply in early premarket trading as traders ditch SPOT after comments made by the company’s CEO and a weaker user growth forecast In the press release detailing the Q1 results cofounder Daniel Ek said that “the short term may bring some noise but we remain confident in the long-term story and the direction we’re heading in feels clearer than ever.” That comment coupled with a forecast for monthly active users to hit 689 million in Q2 appears to be enough to shake confidence in the growth story at Spotify Wall Street estimates compiled by FactSet reveal that analysts were expecting Spotify to get to ~695 million monthly active users by the end of Q2 but Spotify’s guidance implies just 2% MAU growth relative to where things were at the end of last year — a less exciting trajectory than Wall Street had anticipated On Monday, Spotify announced that it had already paid out more than $100 million to creators in the first quarter of 2025 Spotify has been doubling down on incentivizing creators to publish on the platform with revenue-sharing agreements More details are expected on the earnings conference call at 8 a.m (Artur Widak/Getty Images)Chart: Tesla’s profits would evaporate if not for these regulatory creditsTrump has threatened federal support for EVs Last quarter was bad for Tesla but it would have been much worse had it not been for the money the company gets from regulatory credits gets a surplus of them from the government at no cost and then sells them to automakers that don’t meet regulatory requirements Tesla brought in $595 million in regulatory credits revenue it represents 145% of Tesla’s $409 million in net profit last quarter Tesla’s profit fell 71% last quarter compared to a year earlier;
