2025Parade aims to feature only the best products and services
"I learned from the Commence community that a huge part of a woman’s identity was affected by their hair changing over 40," Shields said in a recent Mother's Day Zoom event with her daughters
"They asked me to research and help solve this individual problem."
The brand features the Commence Complex, which is infused with peptides, pre- and post-biotics, plant stem cells and alfalfa sprout extract. It works to support hair growth
"To look at your scalp as skin is so important," Shields said
"We only focus on the part we see—hair
Although Commence was made specifically for more mature hair
Shields said her daughters and their friends love it too
“Even though the Commence products are not intended or marketed to younger generations
even for preventative measures," she said
"Some of my favorite memories with my girls had to deal with their scalp and hair; they could be fussy
and I could run my hands through their scalp
which was so calming to them," she continued
"There has always been a real connection in hair."

Accusation from UN agency comes as Red Crescent medic held since deadly Israeli attack on ambulances is freed
The embattled UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, has accused Israel of abusing dozens of its staff in military detention and using some as human shields
The head of the agency, Philippe Lazzarini, said that more than 50 staff members, including teachers, doctors and social workers, had been detained and abused since the start of the 18-month-long war in Gaza
“They have been treated in the most shocking & inhumane way. They reported being beaten + used as human shields,” Lazzarini wrote on X
Those detained had been subjected to “sleep deprivation
threats of harm to them & their families + attacks by dogs … [and] forced confessions”
UN officials said the reported abuse had taken place both in Gaza and in military detention sites in Israel
The Israeli military has not responded directly to Lazzarini’s accusation
but has previously denied allegations of widespread abuse in its detention facilities and by its troops
the Israeli military said it acted in accordance with Israeli law and international law
and protects the rights of individuals held in detention facilities under its responsibility
whether during their detention or during interrogation
violates the law and the directives of the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] and as such is strictly prohibited,” the statement said
said on Tuesday that Israel had released a medic held since a deadly and hugely controversial attack by Israeli troops on ambulances in southern Gaza on 23 March
six from the Gaza civil defence agency and one Unrwa employee were killed in the attack
according to the UN humanitarian office OCHA
The killings sparked international condemnation
including concern from the UN high commissioner for human rights

Photograph: Palestinian Red Crescent/ReutersRelations between Israel and Unrwa have deteriorated since the beginning of the war
which was triggered by a surprise attack by Hamas militants in southern Israel in October 2023 during which they killed 1,200 people
Israel banned all cooperation with Unrwa’s activities in Gaza and the occupied West Bank earlier this year, and claims the agency has been infiltrated by Hamas, an allegation that has been fiercely contested.
The international court of justice, the UN’s highest court, is hearing statements from dozens of countries and organisations before delivering a legal opinion on Israel’s humanitarian obligations to Palestinians. A key issue is whether Israel’s ban on Unrwa’s operations in Palestine is legal.
Israel is not participating at the ICJ but has dismissed the hearings as “part of the systematic persecution and delegitimization” of the country. The foreign minister, Gideon Saar, said on Sunday that the hearings were “another attempt to politicise and abuse the legal process to persecute Israel”.
Read more“The goal is to deprive Israel of its most basic right to defend itself,” he said
The hearings come amid an intensifying bombardment of Gaza
which had killed at least 27 Palestinians in the past 36 hours
according to local health officials on Monday
The Israeli military said airstrikes had killed three militant commanders and that all targets were “subject to relevant provisions of international humanitarian law
including the taking of feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm”

Blue Cross Blue Shield recently finalized their settlement with their subscribers and is currently in the process of reviewing claims and sending claim determination notice emails to people who have filed their claims
Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is a US federation with 33 independent and locally operated BCBSA companies that provide health insurance to more than 115 million people
The settlement is regarding plaintiffs’ allegations that Blue Cross Blue Shield violated antitrust laws
Blue Cross Blue Shield is a major healthcare provider in the US
One in three Americans receive health coverage through one of Blue Cross Blue Shield’s 33 independent companies as of 2023 data
Blue Cross Blue Shields are locally owned and operated cooperations
they are one of the largest employers in the nation
Healthcare coverage is a persistent concern for Americans. According to 2023 data
just over 92% of the country has health insurance
with 65.4% of this coverage cominng from private companies
Blue Cross Blue Shield companies have network agreements with 1.7 million physicians and hospitals across the country as well as paying out $600 billion in health coverage claims
Blue Cross Blue Shield first faced a class-action lawsuit in 2013, with plaintiffs alleging that the company broke antitrust laws. A settlement was reached with plaintiffs in October of 2020 after a seven year legal battle. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield settlement website
a $2.67 billion Settlement Fund was agreed to as well as Blue Cross Blue Shield agreeing to make changes in the way they do business in order to increase the opportunities for competition in the market for health insurance
“Plaintiffs allege that Settling Defendants violated antitrust laws by entering into an agreement not to compete with each other and to limit competition among themselves in selling health insurance and administrative services for health insurance
Settling Defendants deny all allegations of wrongdoing and assert that their conduct results in lower healthcare costs and greater access to care for their customers
The Court has not decided who is right or wrong
Plaintiffs and Settling Defendants have agreed to a Settlement to avoid the risk and cost of further litigation,” states the Blue Cross Blue Shield settlement website
Blue Cross Blue Shield had denied these allegations
While the closing date to apply for a claim has passed
Blue Cross Blue Shield has yet to announce when it will start sending out payments
About six million individuals filed for a claim
which would mean individuals could expect to receive around $300 in payment
The deadline to object or opt out of a claim was May 2022
Blue Shield Blue Cross has settled another class-action lawsuit
this one with hospitals and health-care providers
The $2.8 billion settlement refers to a lawsuit filed against the company in 2012 alleged that Blue Cross Blue Shield increased the cost of insurance and drove down reimbursements
Blue Cross Blue Shield has also denied any claims to wrong doing for this settlement
If you are an opponent to the settlement, you still have time to lodge challenges before the court decides on a final approval. A final fairness hearing is set for July 16, 2025. However, in further bad news for Blue Cross Blue Shield, on March 5, dozens of hospital systems and healthcare providers filed separate lawsuits in federal courts in California
accusing Blue Cross Blue Shield and its affiliates of underpaying them by billions of dollars
opting out of the $2.8 billion class action settlement and choosing instead to pursue separate legal action

The study highlights how endurance training and fitness influence inflammation
and brain plasticity—key factors in cognitive decline
Researchers stress it’s never too late to start
urging health guidelines to reflect the brain-boosting power of microtraining
The news that even small amounts of physical activity can provide major health benefits received a lot of attention in Norway when NTNU researchers Ulrik Wisløff and Atefe R
Tari published their book “Microtraining – 7 weeks to boost fitness and strength” in January this year
Now the same researchers have looked at the connection between physical activity
The researchers point out that exercising much less than what the current recommendations recommend can provide great benefits – as long as the intensity of the training is high
Credit: Neuroscience NewsThis research was conducted with colleagues from the Queensland Brain Institute in Australia
which has been published in the British medical journal The Lancet
shows that the brain definitely benefits from physical activity
Even small amounts of high intensity exercise have an effect on the brain
This should be communicated more clearly – it may be what motivates people to get started
Endurance training and good fitness can reduce the risk of dementia and promote healthy brain aging
” And it is never too late to start,” says Atefe R
Even small amounts of physical activity may be enough to protect the aging brain
“We summarize research that clearly indicates that exercise is not only important for the heart
Physical activity appears to be one of the most promising measures we have to prevent cognitive decline and dementia,” Tari said
The article evaluated evidence from both animal and human studies
and shows how physical activity affects inflammation
brain plasticity and the release of protective molecules in the blood – processes that weaken with age and contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases
“These are mechanisms that play an important role in the development of dementia and cognitive decline,” Tari said
Tari and Wisløff are researchers at the Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG) at NTNU
and have previously promoted the idea that microtraining – going from no activity to incorporating small doses of pulse training into everyday life – be included in the recommendations from Norwegian health authorities
the recommendation is at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of high intensity per week
“Fully 50 to 70 per cent of the population does not manage today’s activity recommendations
The researchers point out that exercising much less than what the current recommendations recommend can provide great benefits – as long as the intensity of the training is high
Tari and Wisløff believe that this new study makes it even more important to get the message out
“We believe it’s time for health authorities to provide clearer advice on how important exercise is for the brain
Our review shows that even small doses of high-intensity activity – equivalent to brisk walking where you can’t sing – can reduce the risk of dementia by up to 40 per cent,” Wisløff said
International research supports the NTNU researchers’ findings
In a commentary in Nature Medicine in January
American researchers argued that public guidelines need to be updated
Even small doses of physical activity provide health benefits
“Today’s recommendations emphasize total activity
but we show that even small amounts of high intensity exercise have an effect on the brain
“This should be communicated more clearly – it may be what motivates people to get started
A little is better than nothing – and it’s never too late to start,” says Tari
cognitive decline and dementia are becoming a major public health challenge
It should be considered a first-line measure to preserve brain health,” Tari said

Original Research: Closed access.“Neuroprotective mechanisms of exercise and the importance of fitness for healthy brain ageing” by Atefe R. Tari et al. The Lancet
Neuroprotective mechanisms of exercise and the importance of fitness for healthy brain ageing
Ageing is a scientifically fascinating and complex biological occurrence characterised by morphological and functional changes due to accumulated molecular and cellular damage impairing tissue and organ function.
Ageing is often accompanied by cognitive decline but is also the biggest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
Emerging evidence suggests that sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles accelerate brain ageing, while regular physical activity, high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), or a combination of both, can mitigate cognitive impairment and reduce dementia risk.
The purpose of this Review is to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms of endurance exercise and highlight the importance of CRF in promoting healthy brain ageing.
Key findings show how CRF mediates the neuroprotective effects of exercise via mechanisms such as improved cerebral blood flow, reduced inflammation, and enhanced neuroplasticity.
We summarise evidence supporting the integration of endurance exercise that enhances CRF into public health initiatives as a preventive measure against age-related cognitive decline.
Additionally, we address important challenges such as lack of long-term studies with harmonised study designs across preclinical and clinical settings, employing carefully controlled and repeatable exercise protocols, and outline directions for future research.

Apr 14, 2025 8:12 PM EDTAndre Agassi is happily married to Steffi Graf
but there was a time in the past when he was coupled up with Brooke Shields
The former duo was married from 1997 to 1999
and the 59-year-old actress had some curious things to say about her ex in her recent memoir
"I’m glad I never got pregnant with my first husband because it would have been a disaster,” Shields wrote. “When we got divorced he made that very clear.” She also claimed that he often played into her issues with body image
“When I would profess my insecurities to my first husband
‘I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.’ However
‘Will you still love me if I’m big and fat?’ I could never have expected his response,” she alleged in the book

“I love you too much to let you get big and fat," Shields wrote
Agassi was asked about his reaction to his ex-wife's claims
“I have always wished nothing but the best for her,” the retired athlete told Us Weekly
“I guess maybe one of the reasons why I don’t know much about it is because I don’t want to be in a position to necessarily comment on it one way or another
at the end of the day love wins and I try to love everyone.”
In her 2014 book, There Was a Little Girl, Shields talked about Agassi's addiction to meth which he had already revealed in his 2009 bombshell memoir
"I was so unbelievably clueless," Shields wrote in her first book
and you couldn't pick this up?' But if you watch these athletes play
seven hours at the highest level and they keep going and going and the regimen surrounding them is so intense that my justification was
I guess you need to blow off steam when you can."
Agassi and Graff also married in 2001 and share son Jaden

President Donald Trump signed a major executive order Monday aimed at dramatically expanding the powers
and resources available to state and local law enforcement agencies across the United States
titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens,” marks one of the most comprehensive federal efforts in recent years to reshape policing policy
The executive order directs the Attorney General to create a new mechanism to provide legal resources and indemnification for law enforcement officers who face legal expenses or liabilities stemming from their official duties
This includes establishing partnerships with private-sector law firms to offer pro bono legal assistance to officers accused of wrongdoing in the line of duty
Two independent peer-reviewed studies published in the journal Nature of Human Behaviour found that billions of dollars in surplus military equipment transferred to U.S
police departments did not reduce crime or increase officer safety.
The order also mandates a broad increase in federal support for law enforcement
the order calls for a review and potential rollback of federal consent decrees and other oversight measures that the administration says may “unduly impede” law enforcement operations
A particularly controversial provision instructs the Attorney General and Secretary of Defense to increase the transfer of surplus military and national security assets-such as armored vehicles and tactical gear-to local police departments within 90 days
The order also tasks the Secretary of Defense with determining how military training and non-lethal capabilities can be used to prevent crime at the local level
The executive order empowers the Department of Justice to pursue legal action against state and local officials who
obstruct law enforcement or unlawfully restrict police activities
and inclusion” initiatives that are seen as limiting police effectiveness
The order directs the Attorney General to prioritize prosecution of any federal criminal law violations by such officials
The adoption of military equipment and tactics can blur the distinction between civilian law enforcement and the military
raising concerns about the appropriate role of police in a democratic society
A core ethical concern is that militarization shifts the foundational view of policing: instead of seeing citizens as community members to be protected
police may begin to presume the public as potential threats
This undermines the liberal democratic order
which is based on trust between the state and its citizens
and can fundamentally alter the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve
Militarized police forces, equipped with military-grade weapons
and attire, can appear as occupying armies rather than public servants
The use of military tactics and equipment in routine policing and protest responses raises significant constitutional concerns
Militarized policing can chill the exercise of First Amendment rights
or crowd-control weapons against peaceful demonstrators.
The executive order does not formally declare martial law
but critics and analysts argue it creates conditions that could facilitate a de facto militarized policing environment
such transfers under programs like the Pentagon’s 1033 initiative have been linked to increased use of aggressive tactics during protests and routine policing and escalated violence in police-civilian interactions
The directive tasks the Secretary of Defense with assessing how military training and non-lethal capabilities can deter crime
Critics warn this blurs the line between military and police roles
While not explicitly mentioned in the order
Trump has previously sought to evaluate the Insurrection Act
which allows presidents to deploy the military domestically during civil unrest
this could enable a layered approach to suppressing dissent
The Trump administration has sent a clear message that dissent will not be tolerated
President Trump has issued formal proclamations calling for federal investigations into individuals perceived as adversaries
threatened law firms representing his opponents
and taken actions such as deporting student demonstrators.

staff and students are sharing what research and creative activity at the university means to them
Braelyn Shields is a Master of Environmental Management student and graduate research assistant
Shields hails from Boise and received the Global Collaboration Certificate award in 2021 for collaborating with Peruvian students on projects
presentations and reports on the ethnic minority of the Bantu in Somalia
Q: What motivates you to explore new ideas or create something original
A: We were told as little kids that we could change the world one person at a time
and while for many that may not seem true anymore
Creating new understandings of the world is essential to progressing within it
and the conversations with others who have the same mindset are some of the most inspiring and productive ones you’ll see which I get to experience weekly in class
Peers are always providing tid-bits of new ways to look at our environment and society
which I incorporate into ongoing research projects daily
Q: How do you think research and creative activity contribute to society
A: Research and creative activities drive meaningful change by pushing boundaries
and uncovering practical solutions to real-world problems
from environmental management to community resilience
research isn’t just theoretical—it shapes land use decisions
and fosters collaboration between people and their environment
not only in technology but also in the ways we think
and build a more sustainable and equitable society
Q: Research and Creative Activity are impossible in a vacuum
Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting
A: I started grad school with no idea how research even worked
I’ve grown into a life-long learner who can ask tough questions and tackle big ideas
and unwavering support have shaped me in ways I can’t begin to thank them for
Williamson’s SpaSES lab are full of supportive learners and I appreciate each of them for contributing to my own learning experience
and for them listening to my all-over-the-place research updates
I learn so much from just having a seat at the table and I’m so grateful for their guidance—this experience wouldn’t be the same without them
Q: What does Research and Creative Activity at Boise State mean to you
A: Research at Boise State is my way of giving back to the land that raised me
I spent my childhood camping nearly every summer weekend
and feeling completely at home in Idaho’s wild places
Fourth-grade Idaho history first taught me how deeply people and landscapes are connected
my research lets me protect the places that shaped me
It’s more than academics—it’s a way to honor the places that made me who I am

The actress' cabinets pair seamlessly with a blue-painted accent wall
proving that this neutral shade is ever-versatile
I encounter many white kitchens in my day-to-day work
I found myself feeling slightly tired at the thought of seeing another space in this familiar hue
a look at Brooke Shields' cabinets reminded me that neutral kitchens are timeless staples for a reason
and can be incorporated into a range of design styles
This stands true for white and cream-painted cabinets
The actress's space features a soft, cream-colored paint on her cabinetry, which pairs beautifully with a light blue paint job on her walls. It's giving us some fantastic white kitchen ideas
and keeping the classic aesthetic alive in my mind
While the blue paint adds a gentle pop of color
the remainder of the space retains a light and minimalistic feeling
proving that white cabinets are the ultimate foundation for any kitchen
