A Wawa store approved in Shippensburg in late 2023 may finally begin construction this year
they are hoping to start digging this summer,” Borough Manager Kevin Plasterer said
Though the land development plan was approved by the borough council in December 2023
there hasn’t been a lot of visible movement for construction on the 3-acre site off Walnut Bottom Road just west of the Vigilant Hose Company
Cumberland County Planning officials said county staff submitted a letter of support in March
encouraging the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to look favorably on the Wawa project and a grant application submitted by Provco Pinegood Shippensburg LLC
The planning department became aware that Provco is applying for a $840,913 grant available through the Pennsylvania Strategic Investments to Enhance Sites program administered by the state agency
“The project will create approximately 150 new construction jobs over an 18-month period
and the future Wawa will generate 40 part- and full-time positions
benefiting the local workforce and economy,” the county letter reads
the site is occupied by a parking lot and a one-story brick building
Plans are for a Wawa store with a parking lot and gas pumps
The Sentinel reported that Wawa’s expansion into central Pennsylvania may include Carlisle and other parts of Cumberland County
the convenience store chain plans to open up to 40 locations in the region over the next five years
Should a store move forward in Shippensburg
it would turn around what is now an unused property
“The one-story building has been sitting vacant for about 30 some years,” said Plasterer
the brick building once housed mini-mall type stores
There are emails on the Wawa project going back to about June 2022
The plan has already been approved by the borough planning commission and council
the council voted 6-0 to approve the preliminary/final land development plan for the store
there was discussion on how the project would address stormwater runoff from the site
The minutes mentioned that the site has been affected by a change in the borough floodplain map
Judd Dayton of Bohler Engineering told the council that a lot of work went into avoiding a small pocket of wetland and a regulated water course located on the three acres
the county determined that the project aligns with development principles outlined in the 2024 Cumberland County Comprehensive Plan
“The project’s elements support these principles through thoughtful planning and significant improvements to both infrastructure and the local economy,” the letter reads
The Wawa project in Shippensburg would promote economic development and take pressure off greenfield sites
County Planner Kirk Stoner said in a phone interview last week
“The redevelopment plan includes the construction of an on-site storm system
which will enhance the site’s environmental resilience and manage water runoff effectively,” the letter reads
the demolition of the existing building and regrading of the site aim to restore and repurpose the land in a manner that prioritizes sustainability and long-term value.”
Wawa opened its first store in Cumberland County on Thursday
as the eastern Pennsylvania-based chain of convenience stores with gas and made-to-order food expands into central Pennsylvania

SHIPPENSBURG- A Shippensburg-area mother is facing numerous charges after she allegedly assaulted her boyfriend before taking their child and driving away…all the while being under the influence
Natasha Rene Hall has been charged with misdemeanor assault
and traffic citations for careless driving and improper restraint systems for a child under 2
She remains behind bars in Cumberland County Jail on a combined bail of $25,000
Pennsylvania State Police were initially called to the unit block of Barry Circle
PSP were informed it appeared to be an active incident
Troopers subsequently met with the victim in the driveway of the home
That victim said he was trying to go to sleep around 9:30pm when Hall began a verbal argument with him
PSP say that Hall then “began to pull his hair and struck him in the face,” but couldn’t describe how many times or how he was struck
had significant swelling and bruising to the top of his face
PSP say that Hall had picked their child out of the crib and fled the scene
Troopers were able to later locate Hall’s vehicle in the area of Walmart on Conestoga Drive in Shippensburg
When the second group of Troopers found Hall in her vehicle
they immediately pulled it over and initiated a stop
they say that Hall smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot
was in the back seat in a forward-facing child seat
Hall allegedly told PSP that she had smoked a THC vape about 45-60 minutes prior to the stop
with Troopers determining it to be a combination of alcohol and a controlled substance
After contacting the DA’s office for charges
PSP deemed felony child endangerment charges fit to file against Hall
