Amber Portwood’s daughter
is finally reaching out to her — but it’s likely not the message Portwood was hoping to receive
Leah Shirley said 'recent online activities' made her put up a boundary between her and her mother
“This isn’t meant to hurt you,” Shirley texts her mother in an upcoming episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter
“but I want to let you know that all these years it’s been my decision to not have a relationship with you and nobody has influenced my decision.”
Shirley notes “recent online activities” have put her in a place where she need to “communicate this” in order to put a boundary up between her and Portwood
The text message comes on the heels of Shirley opening up about her relationship with her estranged mother to Catelynn Lowell and Maci Bookout on the May 1 episode of the show
Leah Shirley recently claimed her mother hadn't seen her in nine months
Shirley told Lowell and Bookout she was “done” with wanting a relationship with Portwood due to her being an inconsistent presence in her life and for how she’s blamed her dad, Gary Shirley
She also shared she hadn’t seen Amber in nine months and
aside from when Amber reached out after Leah was diagnosed with asthma
Amber hadn’t attempted to contact her whatsoever
“Me and Maci have told her if she wanted to ever have a relationship with you that she needed to start showing consistency,” Catelynn told Leah
they’re aware of her issues in terms of being a parent
Leah noted it’s “too much” to have Amber come in and out of her life and
Leah Shirley insisted Gary Shirley is not to blame for her estranged relationship with Amber Portwood
“She tells me that she loves me and hugs me and stuff and I can’t do that,” Leah elaborated
and then when you do see me – for purposes of there being a camera in your face – you try to act like you’re the best mom ever.”
She said Gary has consistently pushed for Leah to have a relationship with Amber
even pressing Leah to invite her to her birthday party — but Amber didn't end up coming
Leah Shirley has been vocal about wanting Gary Shirley's wife
Catelynn told Leah it was “huge” to see her “setting boundaries” to “protect” her own “mental health and peace” at such a young age
Aside from claiming on a TikTok Live she had been pushed out of Leah’s life, Amber went so far as to accuse Gary of sexual assault on the platform in December 2024.
“You’re a rapist,” she shared at the time on a TikTok Live. “You’re lucky that you have our daughter. And if you want to come at me for this, because I’ve never told anybody. Not once. I’ve never told anybody…You guys, I’ve kept my mouth shut for 17 years. I went through everything that I went through everything that I could to keep this at bay. Even though other people knew about this, okay?”
Teen Mom: The Next Chapter is currently airing on MTV on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.

a two-time NCAA hockey champion with Wisconsin
is using her experience and education to advocate for mental health awareness and support fellow student-athletes in life beyond the game
Grace Shirley still gets chills thinking about it
The moments she and her Wisconsin teammates stormed the ice in celebration of their National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championships in 2021 and 2023 were unforgettable
Winning those championships alongside her older sister
added another meaningful layer to the accomplishments
but I still can't put it into words," said Shirley
whose alma mater won another NCAA title in March
"We won both national championships together
The relationships I made with my teammates and all the staff at Wisconsin
and it's one I'll be proud of and take with me for the rest of my life."
But while her success on the ice was undeniable
the pressures of college sports revealed a side of the game that doesn't often make the highlight reel
Shirley had everything a student-athlete could hope for
where she scored 21 points in four seasons and earned Academic All-Big Ten Conference honors three times
"There was a lot of just pressure that I was putting on myself," she admitted
Shirley's experience is shared by many student-athletes, according to NCAA research data, especially those in women's sports. In the most recent NCAA Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Study
44% of participants in women's sports reported feeling overwhelmed constantly or most every day
Shirley said this weight led her to make one of the most important decisions of her life and reached out to a sports psychologist at Wisconsin — a step supported by the growing presence of mental health services outlined in the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices and Division I core guarantees
the impact of this support far exceeded her expectations
but I think ultimately the impact that it had on all areas of my life was pretty outstanding," she said
"The small tips about gaining confidence and being able to remain composed in tough situations helped pretty fast
but I think more of the long-term stuff was the level of gratitude and being able to wake up every day and go about your life and really care about the relationships and the people behind you are what's stuck with me."
Shirley's sessions helped her rediscover balance in her life
As she navigated the challenges of balancing academics
she found herself embracing a broader perspective on her identity
attempting to find a healthy balance between the academic
athletic and social domains of life can be difficult
utilizing the resources available and working with sports psychologists have had such a positive impact
but my overall levels of happiness and well-being," she said
"Obviously it's important to be performing well
but there's so many aspects of life that are just as important to foster and take care of as well
I'm really grateful for all those resources that college hockey has provided me."
As Shirley embraced the impact that mental health counseling had on her own life
she felt drawn to help others in the same way
where she competed as a graduate transfer during the 2023-24 season and began pursuing a master's degree in counseling with the goal of becoming a licensed mental health counselor
This pursuit also led her to attend the 2025 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar
a three-day event in February designed to help young professionals develop leadership skills and explore career paths in college athletics?
"I'm really passionate about mental health counseling," she said
"It's always been something that I've really found interesting and enlightening
Being at the Emerging Leaders Seminar has really helped with this."
themed "Lead Like a Superhero: Unleash Your Superpowers," challenged participants to identify their values and understand their unique abilities
who had already begun her journey toward becoming a mental health professional
found herself drawn to discussions on how counseling and leadership intersect in college sports
"We were able to talk through careers within the field of counseling and how that relates to collegiate athletics
which is definitely a growing field," she said
"A lot of athletes are seeking mental health services
and I hope to contribute and help the lives of upcoming student-athletes."
Shirley knows firsthand how intimidating it can be to ask for help
but she also understands how important it is
As she prepares to graduate with a master's degree
Shirley is looking not just to the future of her career but to the impact she hopes to make
She wants to be a resource for student-athletes struggling with the same pressures she experienced and to help them learn to embrace life beyond sports
"I just want to demonstrate a level of empathy and understanding," she said
I was someone who was seeking additional services or resources
And I want to be that person that can really help and just kind of change your outlook or maybe some of those patterns of thinking
I just really want to demonstrate that I'm there for you
that I care about you and then I want to be with you as you start this process."
As Shirley reflects on her journey — the championships
the growth — she said her biggest win has been learning who she is beyond the game
"There's a lot more to life than just sport and there's more to me than just a hockey player
I'm a daughter and a sister and a really good friend," she said
before reflecting on her journey more broadly
"Hockey has impacted my life in so many ways
and I have nothing but positive things to say about Wisconsin and Providence
They provided me the resources and support needed for me to reach my full potential as both a hockey player and as a person."

about why she can't keep trying for a relationship with Amber
New York State Senator Sean Ryan joined partners from Forest Lawn Cemetery and Burchfield Penney Art Center to officially unveil a statue depicting Shirley Chisholm outside of Forest Lawn’s Birchwood Mausoleum
Other notable attendees included Congressman Tim Kennedy and New York State Senator April Baskin
Chisholm made history as the first Black woman to serve in the United States Congress in 1968 and the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president in 1972
and touted herself as “the people’s politician.” While in Congress
she advocated for programs like Head Start
Chisholm was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus. After her retirement from Congress in 1983
Chisholm lived for several years in Williamsville
Buffalo native and fellow former New York State Assemblymember Arthur Hardwick
The statue was commissioned using state funding secured by Senator Ryan to honor Chisholm’s legacy and convey that women – particularly Black women – are capable of anything
It was designed by Buffalo artist Julia Bottoms and cast in bronze by Gareth Lichty
Bottoms’ concept was designed to evoke emotion and inspire reflection through a series of elements that reference Chisholm’s life and legacy
It features Chisholm standing behind a podium adorned with the seal of the 1972 Democratic National Convention
with her hand raised high in the air displaying a peace sign
On one side of the podium is a plaque featuring Chisholm’s famous quote: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table
bring a folding chair.” Propped against the opposite side of the podium is a folding chair
providing a symbolic reference to the quote
The statue is the first known statue in Chisholm’s likeness to be completed
though others have been announced for Prospect Park and Brower Park in New York City
Senator Raphael Warnock and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke have sponsored legislation to bring a Shirley Chisholm statue to the United States Capitol
we celebrate Shirley Chisholm as a trailblazer who broke barriers as the nation’s first Black congresswoman and presidential candidate
Those milestones inspired millions and are what made her famous
but it was her lifelong commitment to using her fame and influence to uplift others that made her such a special person
Throughout her career and even after her retirement
she was a fearless advocate for the underrepresented and those who sought to follow in her footsteps
we were proud to unveil a statue that authentically captures Chisholm’s personality and conveys the philosophy by which she lived every day
and everyone else involved with this project for all of their hard work to make this day possible
I hope that this statue will stand not only as a celebration of an important figure in our nation’s history
but also as inspiration for future generations who will see themselves in Chisholm and understand that anything is possible.”
Shirley Chisholm was ahead of her time in her political philosophy; she persevered through the seemingly insurmountable challenges of being the first Black female elected to Congress and first Presidential candidate
Her tenacious will to represent the American people helped lay the foundation for Black female elected officials
I stand on her shoulders and am incredibly honored to mold her symbolism into a statue
right here in Buffalo where she made her home.”
“Forest Lawn has nearly 170,000 ‘permanent residents’ including the former congresswoman and her late husband
We also are home to 32 other members of Congress
When we say ‘Come Home to Forest Lawn’ we mean it for so many Western New Yorkers in so many ways and especially today as we honor the late great Shirley Chisholm who is at home and at rest here
now joined by her amazing likeness as sculpted by Julia Bottoms
We look forward to welcoming visitors to see this sculpture
Many thanks to New York State Senator Sean Ryan for his stewardship and the advocacy of the steering committee to make this a reality.”
Executive Director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center
“It is an honor to be involved in the Shirley Chisholm project
We are happy that the community can now proudly celebrate Shirley as a Buffalonian
we can move forward with her in mind and how we do the work of today.”
“Working on this project has been an incredible journey
and dreams exist in the footsteps of Chisholm’s legacy
Her historic run for president and her overall career in politics spoke to me even as I navigate the fine arts field – a field in which
Black women are historically underrepresented
‘If they don’t give you a seat at the table
bring a folding chair’ is a focal point throughout the statue and an incredibly relevant message for us all
Chisholm’s words ring as true today as they did so many years ago
her message remains clear: Dare to achieve beyond the boundaries the world has set for you
Her words and her work inspired this statue
and my goal is to honor her legacy with it
I looked to capture her personality in the details such as her sense of fashion
I also remained faithful in my depiction of her likeness
and committed to honoring her beautiful Black features
I hope this statue sparks conversations and curiosity
I hope it reminds people of her connection to our city
to embody a bit of her indomitable spirit!”
passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday
and together they built a home filled with love
Shirley cared for countless patients at Alpena Hospital and in a private doctor’s office
touching lives with her compassion and kindness
Her warm spirit also shone brightly through her active membership at First United Methodist Church
Shirley loved the simple pleasures of life
and cherished every moment spent with family and friends
Shirley’s legacy lives on in her children: Al (Kathy) Brandt
David Brandt and Karen (Ron) Fournier; her beloved grandchildren: Stephanie (Tim) Onstwedder
and Jason Brandt; and her great-grandchildren: Brayson
She is also survived by her brother Jim (Anne) McMillan and brother-in-law Glen Herron

STAFFAN-MITCHELL ~ CELEBRATING 170 YEARS OF SERVICE ~ 1853-2023
The best way to describe Shirley is that she lived a life rooted in faith
She worked for many years in the Saline School System
where she touched countless lives through her quiet compassion and dedication
She was an active member of East Ovid United Brethren Church for many years
She enjoyed volunteering at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater
delivering Meals on Wheels and always being the first to lend a hand to neighbors in need
Shirley has spent these years patiently waiting to reunite with the love of her life
they raised three children: Deb Struble (Jim)
Shirley’s love extended to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren
She had a deep love for her Detroit Tigers
never missing a game — even scheduling her days around when they would play
(You would never want to call her just for a chat during a Tiger game!) Compassionate and non-judgmental
Shirley lived her life guided by a strong faith in God and a heart full of grace
She often worried more about being a burden than about her own needs
Shirley was a model for living a spiritual life — not by preaching
but by leading humbly by example — and she will be truly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her
Service details and memorial instructions will be shared in the coming days
It is with both heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Fayard Ferguson
